We pay homage to the men and women who against unbelievable odds have gone on to achieve great things in their chosen fields. People who have helped change the world. What would have happened if Rosa Parks had just given up her seat? How many lives would’ve have been lost if Dr William Hale didn’t pursue his dream of being a surgeon? Who would have been our voice in British Politics if Bernie Grant had decided to stay a postman? We are honouring the rulebreakers, the guys that had the warrior spirit to stand up and make a change. It ’s a time for us to celebrate our ancestors and say thank you. We acknowledge and thank them for their selfless actions which have led to future generations living that little bit easier and excelling in areas that would not have been accessible before their inter vention. To help celebrate this month we again have prizes galore to offer readers including, theatre tickets to give away highlighting some of the best British talent in the UK, a night out at the movies or how about watching UK pioneer Jazzie B, per forming an exclusive set at the launch of the new Rich Mix venue in east London. LIC is a bumper filled month full of events, which celebrate ever ything, that ’s great about being Black and British. So until next month happy reading! Take care From all the team at Life In Colour

Keep Smiling Through: Black Londoners on the Home 1939-1945
Looking for Love in London Another man bites the dust and fate conspires to have me turn 30 a week later. OK. OK. OK. Don’t panic. In the mirror, I see a relatively attractive woman staring back: tall and slender. Well, sort of… if I could only shave off a little over there, I’d be kind of sexy. I’m still in the game with a chance to find Prince Charming. Soon I’ll be Mrs. Sarah Somebody. What I need is a plan – a plan to meet The One! But where the hell do I start? OK. OK. OK. Calm down. Soon they’ll be queuing at the door. Black ones, White ones, Brown ones. Who makes the better husband anyway? And who’s better in bed? If only I were Jewish so my mum could introduce me to a number of eligible bachelors. Or if I were Indian, the whole community would find me someone. But who’s ever heard of the mixed-race community? What mixed-race guy wants to meet his mixed-race other half? Whatever. I’m Black. Aren’t I?
Half Page Ad.
Ding Dong! Oh my goodness. He’s here already? A Black man who is on time! Hurrah! My friend Jacquie sent him round. Says he’s nice with a good sense of humour. She says he’s Eritrean. Maybe he’s The One! I run down the stairs and glimpse a tallish figure through the frosted glass of the front door. Youpee! I swing open the heavy door. Before me is a pretty man with the longest eye-lashes I have ever seen. I say ‘pretty’ because that’s just it: he looks like a girl – small, thin and refined. My eyes widen. My heart sinks. I glance at his face and then again, just to double-check. No, he isn’t wearing any make-up. And yes, he really is a man, and a Black man at that. ‘All set?’ he whimpers. No, no, no, no! You mean I’m gonna waste a whole evening on you? Jacquie! How could you do this to me? What is the point of a ‘good’ sense of humour when my Mr Potential is built like a toothpick? Where is the deep, man-in-charge kind of voice of my Prince Charming? Why does my Mr Potential sound like a he swallowed a helium balloon? I want to feel like a girl, not the Jolly Green Giant! I shrug my shoulders, smiling. ‘Of course I am.’ As I slam the front door, I imagine the evening of hell in front of me: pretending to laugh at this jokes, boosting his ego at the right moments, and preparing to avoid his phone calls for the rest of my life. THE REST OF MY LIFE! Will that be with, or without Prince Charming?

Bernie Alexander Montgomery Grant entered the history books firstly by being the first Black man to be elected to Haringey Borough Council and then jointly with Dianne Abbot by becoming the first people of colour to be elected as Members of Parliament in 1987. His campaigning on Race and equality issues resulted in a change in attitudes by establishments and authorities including the Metropolitan Police and Local Authorities who regularly discriminated against sections of the community. Bernie Grant died in 2000, however his legacy lives on; in 2007 The Bernie Grants Arts Centre was built in his constituency to honour a man who was considered truly the voice of Black Britain.

Jesse Owens First African American to Win Four Gold Medals at the Olympics B: 1913 – Alabama USA D: 1980 In the summer of 1936 a young African American became a symbol of hope and equality at the Berlin Olympics. It was just before the outbreak of World War II where Hitler and his Nazi propaganda machine were in full swing, promoting concepts of Aryan racial superiority. Jesse Owens surprised many by winning four gold medals in 4 days in the 100m, 200m, long Jump and 4 x 100m relay, an achievement that shot down Hitler’s racial superiority theory. So incensed by his victory, Hitler refused to acknowledge the Olympic Champion and ironically Owens was also snubbed by the then president Franklin D. Roosevelt who refused to officially recognize his accomplishments. Since his death in 1980 his legacy lives on and his Olympic ethos of ‘Anything is possible,’ remains to this day a vital part of the championships.
