MUSIC FEATURE • MUSIC FEATURE • ROBIN THICKE

RAY J

Award winning R&B singer songwriter Robin Thicke and the Voice behind the International smash ‘Lost Without You, talks to JB Rose about his whistle stop sell out tour of the UK.

Multi million selling R’n’B artist Ray J has been plagued by rumours and gossip recently but wants to set the record straight and get back to what he loves most – making good music. We caught up with the multitalented singer/ producer/ actor, to talk about London, his new album and life.

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR 1ST BIG BREAK? At 14 I was singing in 3 piece band which also had Al Jarreau’s nephew in it. It was great break because AL Jarraeu paid $1,000 for our 1st, four-song demo. Bryan McKnight absolutely loved it. He couldn’t believe it was a white boy singing, so he took it to his label. By 16 I was signed to interscope records where Bryan Mcknight became my mentor and I got the chance to sing and tour with him.

YOU TOOK A BREAK FROM MUSIC FOR WHILE, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO? I’ve been recording my new album; the whole experience was quite intense and kinda soul cleansing. I’m so excited about coming to the UK to promote the album and establish myself over here.

WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR? There have been too many to mention, going on tour with Mary J Blige and Beyonce, being a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show, I just can’t say really. On a personal note, getting married has been a great achievement and I am particularly missing my new wife right now.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR ALBUM, ‘ALL I FEEL’? The album definitely has more of a mature feel to it. I have experienced more in life and in love and my new material illustrates how I have moved on as an artist. There is something for everyone, club bangers, slow jams and some hot collaborations with Hip Hop’s finest - The Game and Styles P.

WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING WITH MARY J BLIGE? It’s amazing how she connects with her audience, she’s a very masterful entertainer and her energy on stage is awesome. Mary J. is such a powerful singer who understands her audience.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE UK? Without a doubt the women! British women are so sexy and I love the fashion and the cool accent. Every thing over here just feels so original and fresh. I love London; next time I come over I definitely want to hit some hot clubs.

WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? Kurtis Blow, NWA, Jodeci, Boyz to Men, Babyface, Curtis May field, Marvin Gaye even Barry White. WHY DO YOU SAY EVEN BARRY WHITE? Because I grew up listening to all this music and I sometimes didn’t even know that these great tracks were written by these artists it used to be like, ‘hey Barry White wrote that, and he wrote that too!’. YOU ALSO QUOTE MICHAEL JACKSON AS A GREAT INFLUENCE? Michael Jackson is the biggest influence on our generation, period. The music, the voice, the dancing everything about him, you can’t talk about music and not mention his influence on us all. ON HIS LOVE OF MUSIC I love music, that’s all I did, that’s all I do, it’s all I know. Music is part of my every being and I don’t know how to do anything else. ADVICE TO UP AND COMING SINGERS & MUSICIANS? Accolades, applause and praise end quickly. Love making music, make it part of your life, your being, do it because you love it. Don’t do it for the big gesture, or the money, or the fame, do it because you would do it anyway. We can’t all be big entertainers; some people have to be the foundation builders, the thinkers, and the strategists. To all the London people I’d like to say God bless, stay positive and if you’re American vote for Barrack Obama Robin Thickes third offering, ‘Something Else’ is out on general release the album includes his latest hit Magic By JB Rose

WHAT HAS IT FELT LIKE GROWING UP IN THE PUBLIC EYE? It’s crazy, I was only 13 yrs old when I started in the entertainment industry. Growing up has been hard. People were not paying attention to my talents, so I went through some bad times and I started acting out and doing things I’m not exactly proud off. Critics started putting me on their blogs but at 27 yrs old now, I feel like I’m out of all that and I’ve realised its important to be loyal to myself most of all. DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE RISEN ABOVE THE LABEL AS BRANDY’S LITTLE BROTHER? I love my sister, she has always helped me out. The entertainment industry can be tough but having a famous big sister has been like extra icing on the cake. I’m not bitter towards her success, I’ve just gotta do me. Our relationship is stronger than ever. I know we overcome anything. WHAT NEW PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE IN THE PIPELINE? This is meant to be a secret but I’ve just finished filming a reality show, following my hectic life with VH1. It will probably be broadcast in the UK later this year, so all my fans can look forward to getting to know me just a bit better. Ray J new album ‘All I Feel’ is now out on general release By Amanda Lauria Thomas

• MUSIC FEATURE • MUSIC FEATURE Yolanda Brown ‘Take a jug of Jazz, two teaspoons of Soul and a twist of r&b, then add a cup full of Gospel, a sprinkle of reggae and a pinch of Latin, served with Raw Emotion. There you have the Yolanda Brown Sound’. Like a breath of fresh air in an industry that plays by the rules Saxophonist Yolanda Brown has broken the mould to create a sound that truly is unique and has arguably become the face of modern urban jazz. Yolanda is running late for our interview, on arrival she is very apologetic explaining that she has to travel 3 days a week to the university of Kent where she is halfway through her PHD in Management Science. Meeting Miss Brown I was initially surprised at how petite she is, but that surprise was immediately diminished when she gave me a hug and her personality more than made up for her stature. Relaxed after sipping a fruit punch she the friendly East Londoner tells us how she has taken the music industry by storm. ‘I’ve always been interested in music and musical instruments’ admits the polite musician. ‘As a child I played the drums, violin and piano, by the time I was 14, I discovered the Saxophone and fell in love with it. For two years I was taught the basic elements of the instrument and after that I taught myself. When I left school I knew I wanted to pursue a career in music. Whilst at Uni I saw that Black Grape were holding auditions looking for members for a new band, I went along with my saxophone. I performed and they were really impressed asking me if I wanted to perform as a solo artist. I immediately jumped at the chance. In three years I went from being a student to performing at my first solo show’. Wanting to know more LIC asks Yolanda what the publics reaction was to this young girl performing Jazz to an urban audience. ‘The public initially were unsure of my style of music’ she admits ‘but thankfully they came with an open mind and the response has been amazing. People really understand my music as it’s very conversational as opposed to conventional Jazz’ she continued, ‘my style is very different. I try and mix it up by incorporating current songs as well as original tracks to my set. To date I have covered tracks including Bob Marley’s Wait in Vain, Robin Thicke’s Lost Without you and Neyo’s Miss Independent, I’ve found it’s helped open up this style of music to a brand new younger audience. I have also changed my look. When I first started my look was reflective of how I used to be, I was the original tomboy!’ she admits laughing ‘When I did a show I would wear trousers and waistcoats but as I’ve got older I have become more girlie. At (comedian) Eddie Kadi’s first solo show I wore a dress, heels and make up, the reaction to this was fantastic. Since then I have always worn a dress on stage, it’s become my trademark look’. I think that this has helped me engage with the audience better’ says Yolanda, ‘because I’m female the audience perceive my music as more soulful and I feel that it allows people to see a softer side of Jazz, it helps to get my message across’

With her trademark dresses and unique take on Jazz LIC asks what surprises we can expect from Yolanda Browns next live show? ‘I am constantly bringing something new to the table’, smiled the confident musician ‘for example I performed at comedian Kojo’s Last Show in September and I introduced a male dancer who shadowed me when I played Neyo’s Miss Independent, the audience loved it, look out for more of that. I’m not a singer I am a saxophonist so my focus is on the music and the instrument, I don’t want to over shadow what I am all about’ Finally LIC asks Yolanda how it feels to be this year’s recipient of the MOBO best Jazz Act ‘Winning the 2008 MOBO best Jazz Act. It was such an amazing feeling and it’s an honour just to be nominated and recognised for the work that we at (Black Grape) have done. I’m an unsigned artist therefore all of this is down to sheer hard work from the team.’ She continues ‘The love and support that I have received from the public has been fantastic and I would like to say thank you to everyone who took the time out to vote for me and support me at my live shows. It’s been an amazing journey and we are just at the beginning. I am thankful for everyday and every opportunity that has passed my way. Yolanda LIC congratulates you on your success and would like to wish all the best for the future. Yolanda Brown performs live in concert with special guests Mica Paris, Sway and Nate James on Saturday 29th November tickets priced £15 - £25 info: 07931 131 372, 07944 758 430

MUSIC FEATURE • MUSIC FEATURE • CRAIG DAVID

LEMAR

With over 10 years in the music industry Craig David can easily be described as a veteran when it comes to UK soul. At the age of 18 whilst working with Artful Dodgers, Craig’s first taste of fame came with the 2000 hit Rewind, which reached no 2 in the UK charts paving the way for a sensational solo career. His debut single Fill Me In, topped the charts later that year. The handsome young Craig David also made history by becoming the youngest ever male solo artist to reach number one aged just 19. On the back of this success his debut album Born To Do It, was released, selling more than 7 million copies world wide earning him multi platinum status in more than 20 countries. To date Craig David has released four albums 3 of which have received platinum status and has been nominated for numerous awards including a Brit, Grammy and the BET Awards. His success as a multiple recipient of the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards, MOBO and MTV Europe Video awards clearly shows he’ll be around for sometime. On the 24th November look out for Craig David’s much anticipated Greatest Hits Album.

Lemar music career began at the age of 17 when he luckily landed the position of support act for R&B superstar Usher. Obviously brimming over with talent, the silky voiced crooner gave up a career in medicine to pursue his dream to become a musician and had minor success supporting various then up and coming acts including Destiny’s Child, Total and Uncle Sam. In 2002 Lemar applied to join the now defunct reality music show Fame Academy where, with huge public support he reached the finals only to come in third. On the back of this success Lemar eventually signed to Sony music and has become one of the UK’s most successful R&B artists. His infectious debut track Dance With You, peaked in the UK charts at no 2 and received great success in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In 2004 Lemar was awarded Best Urban Act at the Brits and to date he’s collaborated with the brilliant Beverley Knight, Joss Stone, Mica Paris and UK Rapper – Sway. Having released three albums to much critical acclaim; this November will see his fourth offering - The Reason with dates for a national tour to follow.

• MUSIC FEATURE • MUSIC FEATURE Estelle

Ashley Thomas Aka Bashy

A phenomenal rapper, sultry singer and a prolific song writer Estelle is arguably one of the UK’s biggest urban exports obviously set for world domination. With a career spanning over 10 years Estelle started out by playing numerous clubs in and around London and appearing with the likes of Skitz, Rodney P, Roots Manuva and Black Twang. By 2003, Estelle released her debut Single Excuse Me, to much critical and underground acclaim. Estelle’s breakthrough came with the release in 2004 of the club anthem 1980, which earned her a best newcomer MOBO at that year’s ceremony. Fast forward 4 years and a relocation to US, a label change signing to US soul star John Legends Label and chance meeting with US rapper Kanye West, the tenacious and highly driven Estelle has become one of the most sought after artists both here and in the US, with the release of her award winning sophomore album Shine. Having since received numerous nominations and awards including this year’s Mercury Music Prize, BET Awards, MTV Music Awards and the recipient of Best Female Act and Best Song at the 2008 MOBO Awards Estelle’s is likely to be Black Britain’s most successful export.

Bashy, one of the fastest rising stars on the UK Grime scene cut his teeth on various mix tapes with the likes of the then unknown but highly creative Kano, Dizzee Rascal and Wiley. He came to the public’s attention in 2007 with the phenomenal inspirational hit song Black Boys, a track that attacked the constant negative stereotypes of young Black teens which was aimed to instil a sense of pride to young Black men in the UK. Black Boys was a cross over success and went on to receive heavy rotation on pirate radio stations, MTV Base, Channel U, Choice FM and 1xtra. Since then Bashy has gone from strength to strength, going onto record the theme tune for the critically acclaimed urban Brit Flick Adulthood and receiving nominations at this years MOBO’s and Urban Music Awards. Bashy will be performing live at London’s Astoria. 2009 will also see the release of his hotly anticipated album Catch Me If You Can.

Dizzee Rascal He is arguably the face of UK Grime, first coming to the public’s attention in 2003 with the award winning album Boy in Da Corner, which spawned the hits I Luv u and Fix Up Look Sharp. Dizzee’s debut offering created a furore in the industry as well as history by being awarded the prestigious 2003 Mercury Prize. To date Dizzee Rascal is the youngest ever recipient of this honour and only the second rap artist to receive the prize. In 2003 Da Boy in Da Corner was also chosen as the album of the year by Planet Sound and placed in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 50 album of the year alongside Kanye West, Most Def and Eminem. Since then, Dizzee Rascal has released two more critically acclaimed offerings Showtime and Maths + English, which included the hits Stand Up Tall, Sirens and Old Skool. This summer Dizzee scored his first UK No. 1 with the highly infectious Dance Wiv Me and for the second year running he has been awarded the best UK Male at the prestigious MOBO awards. The charismatic Dizzee Rascal is currently on tour in the UK don’t miss him performing London at the Forum.

MICHAEL SIMONS PROMOTIONS Who is Michael Simon?

Life in Colour caught up with the CEO of one of London’s top club promotions company, also described as an entrepreneur and a dynamic business man.

Special P

Slim

Roger D

Donna Spence

Tell me about yourself I’m a property developer with two main strains to my business. The business is called Premier South East, with a workforce of 12 people. Plus there is also an interior designer, aspect which allows me to work with clients on individually tailored designs for their properties, both domestic and commercial. Another of my companies, also called Preimier is one of the largest independet transportation organisation in London, providing transport, courier, chauffeur services and more. Our client base is with all the large financial and corporate institutions in the UK including the stock exchange and major banks. I’m also a club promoter organising regular events in London throughout the year and I’d like to think that my events bring a touch of class to the regular club scene. What made you choose your profession? After having builders in my own house, I questioned the costings to see if I could do the same work cheaper. So I pulled a team together, used my senior management background to manage them. Within three months I gave up my Directors post at London’s largest independent courier and transportation company, Premier Dispatch, to set up my building and consultancy firm. What risks have you faced along the way? I think the biggest risk for me was giving up the security that a salaried job offers you. Second, to that knew that initially, I didn’t have the building know how myself apart from the experience I had gained from my own personal developments. With that in mind, I faced a steep learning curve but I was determined to succeed. How do you measure success? There are different ways that you can measure success, but for me, it’s being able to pay my bills and maintaining my lifestyle.

For tickets or further information Email: michaelsimonpromotions@googlemail.com Tel: 07961 578517 or 07946 106717

What would you say is your recipe for success? For me, it’s having a positive outlook and a “can do” attitude without becoming complacent. Always listening and learning. Mistakes are made, and it’s about learning from them. Have you ever felt your career wasn’t worth the stress? Yes, at 27 I was rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack, which was related to financial worries. Do you think you stay grounded? Yes, I don’t chase as much as I used to. I enjoy what I have and reflect on my achievements. What advice would you give to anyone starting a new business? Make sure that your foundations are strong before you start. You need to concentrate on your business and being realistic about what you can achieve staying optimistic at the same time. Do you have a good work life balance? I’m a workaholic, always something on the go with the club nights, the building business and now the magazine. Finally describe your personality? I’m approachable and genuine, what you see is what you get. I’m soft hearted but I can be aggressive when I need to be. When it comes to business, I’m ambitious and very driven. Michael Simon Promotions presents his annual Pre- Christmas comedy showcase and Black Tie Ball. Hosted by Robbie Gee and Eddie Nestor. A night of hilarious comedy with the very best in Caribbean cuisine prepared by Hells Kitchen’s contestant Gary Tomlin. Confirmed guests on the night include Richard Blackwood, Felix Dexter, Special P, Annette Fagon and the Award winning comedian Slim. For further information email michaelsimonspromotions@googlemail.com or call 07961 578 517/07946 106 717. Music on the night will be bought to you by Rampage, Frankie Beverley and Frankie 2 Sweet.

Island Fusion is a restaurant of distinction in the heart of Crystal Palace, rivalling the top restaurants in the West End. It looks like a fivestar gem floating on the beach. The bamboo walls, lanterns and faux-windows with painted palm trees in the sun transport the dining room to another world. There are even fans and a water-feature to complete the Caribbean experience. From the outside, it is impossible to predict the heavenly environment on the inside. Without windows, the dining adventure is all the more secluded and treasured, shutting out any memories of Crystal Palace traffic, and carrying you into that five-star bamboo hut on the beach. Open since February this year, with a Jamaican manager and three Jamaican chefs, the expectation might be for high-quality Jamaican food. This is indeed the case. From plantain stuffed with ackee and salt fish to jerk chicken, festivals and oxtail with broad beans, the Jamaican palate will be satisfied. But Island Fusion is indeed a fusion of different cuisines. Barbados duck and Trini Doubles are just a few of the delectable island items on the menu. To add to the air of sophistication, there are vegetarian options like the stuffed bell peppers with a pumpkin risotto. Some dishes even have an eastern twist. Spring roll

pastry and sautéed baby pak choi are right at home on a menu where everything tempts the taste buds. The presentation of the food is exquisite and resembles that of a top West End restaurant. My Caribbean prawns, which were delicious, never required a fingerbowl because of the clever layout. Even the salads are beautiful. While the Banana Cow, a white-rum drink, so sweet and yummy, might be enough to count for some as a desert, one must save room, for at Island Fusion, this is the most divine part of the meal. The passion fruit crème brulée takes crème brulée to a level the French would never have imagined. For excitement, order the banana flambé which is served with flames dancing on the rum swimming amongst the bananas. At Island Fusion, both the eyes and the stomach are satisfied. With several Christmas party menus, sporting varied 2-course and 3-course options, ranging from £22 to £30, Island Fusion is ideal for a work event. But it is also the perfect get-away for that special romantic dinner, or for any meal which requires a taste of elegance. Island Fusion is sleek, soft and sensual and is more than just food. It is an island adventure.

www.bamboo-grove.co.uk Opening Hours Friday - Saturday Lunch: 12-4pm Dinner: 6-12am Sunday - Thursday Lunch: 12-4pm Dinner: 6-11pm

Bamboo Grove is cool Caribbean dining in an elegant Californian-style brasserie. Bright and airy, the sharp, sleek tables give the space a feel of modernity. Fish sail about in the snazzy fish tank which is ensconced in the wall, pausing every now and then to peer out enviously as the diners savour the distinctly Caribbean food with a European edge. The curried goat arrives in what looks like a budding flower, made out of a crunchy pastry. It is sumptuous, as is the seabass, which is so beautifully laid out, one is scared to disturb it. Eating at Bamboo Grove makes sense of the title ‘Caribbean chef of the year’ which Anthony Cumbermatch has earned. He brings to Croydon the culinary skills which had The Ivy, Quaglinos and The Savoy eagerly pursuing him in the West End. Bamboo Grove doesn’t just do jerk chicken. It does Jamaican jerk chicken ‘niblets’. Crab claws, yam fritters and King prawns are an example of some of the exotic cuisine that will tantalise your palate. In addition to a wide variety of alcoholic cocktails, the more diet-conscious customer has the choice of a number of smoothies and juices. Guava, lychee, pomegranate or sorell are a few of the juices which will take you to the heart of the Caribbean. Smoothies blend a European and West Indian taste, mixing coconut, banana and pineapple and feel like a meal in themselves.

At Bamboo Grove, the large leafy green plants frame the smooth wooden floors, while the bamboo painted wall leads towards the openplan kitchen. There is always something very comforting about a restaurant when you can see the chefs cook your food. With staff from Trinidad, Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica, gazing into the kitchen allows the customer the opportunity to not only judge the quality of the diverse Caribbean dishes but its people as well. Open since June this year, Bamboo Grove has been pulling in the punters regularly. In the weekdays, they serve a lunch buffet, with a range of ten dishes for only £6.95. With desert, it is slightly more at £7.95. Try the Chocolate Terrine as I did. Difficult to describe, part cake, part cream, part chocolate, part strawberry, but delicious all over. Bamboo Grove is a delightfully exquisite experience which proves that fine dining with an exotic flavour does not only reside in town. Bamboo Grove puts Croydon on the map as the centre of South London, where Caribbean sophistication, peppered with European flair, makes it stand out of the crowd. 33 South End, South Croydon Surrey, CR0 1BE T: 020 8667 0070 F: 020 8667 0699

Feeling weathered? Feeling beaten? Is it the end of a hard week? Then retreat into the harbour that is Windies Cove. Homely, intimate and genuine, with the sounds of Bob Marley adding soothing tones to your evening, at Windies Cove, one can find an inner peace.

Windies Cove has been bringing in a regular trade for about 4 years. Open in the evenings until 11 pm, one can even pick up a late dinner to take home, if one is feeling too weathered to stay a while. But if one wishes to stay, the mixed clientele makes the dining area a picture-perfect example of multicultural London enjoying their dinner together.

Not far from the beating heart of Greenwich, this oasis of calm makes for the perfect get-away. Curries and roties, chicken in dozens of WestIndian styles, accompanied with delicious plantain or sweet potato mash, will ensure that your Caribbean experience is complete. The food isn’t just good. It is truly West Indian. You might even think you’ve mistakenly gone home to mum for dinner.

In search of something more lively? There is always the option of having a private party in Windies Cove’s basement rum bar. Open until 2am, one can begin the evening with dinner upstairs, and then dance the night away downstairs, next to the wellstocked rum bar. The sofas in the rum bar have me wondering how long the ladies sit there, waiting to be asked to dance. The number of bottles in the rum bar have me thinking it can’t be very long.

Rum daiquiris of every description will help to send you off on your tranquil journey. The smiles of the lovely waitresses will soothe your soul. ‘We don’t serve punch without a punch,’ the waitress tells me. ‘You have to be able to taste the alcohol.’ And taste the rum, one will. Have a few of these daiquiris, and you’ll be having a taste of the Caribbean itself.

A visit to Windies Cove is like a trip down memory lane, where one can feel the pebbles from the West Indian dirt lanes beneath one’s feet and one can hear the waves beating down on the nearby beach. If you’re feeling like you need a break but cannot afford a flight, take my advice, moor your boat at Windies Cove and you’ll feel refreshed, as if you had been to the Caribbean.

Looking for Love in London Here I am on my thirtieth birthday, standing in Selfridges, buying moisturisers to stop from looking so old. ‘Sarah! Sarah, Darling! How are you?’ It’s Georgina. Damn. Must hide. No. She’s my dearest friend. ‘Fancy running into you here.’ Georgina pokes me in the shoulder as I dangle my tiny bag behind my back. ‘This is the last place I would have thought to find you. I’ve been buying some body creams for pregnant women.’ She pronounces the word ‘pregnant’ as if it’s some prestigious award. Her sleek golden shoulder-length hair bounces over her white knit turtleneck as if we’re in a Timotei shampoo advertisement. ‘I’d hate to look like a raisin when this is all over. John might never look at me again!’ John is Georgina’s delightful surgeon husband. Georgina and John are the perfect couple. They make me want to vomit. You are going out tonight to celebrate, aren’t you?’ ‘Well, not exactly. I thought I’d stay in.’ I desperately search for an explanation. ‘Thirty isn’t a number you want to advertise, is it? And there’s this great movie on Sky that I’ve been meaning to see—’ ‘A FILM ON SKY?’ spouts Georgina, shaking her head in disbelief. ‘Don’t be silly, Sarah. You are definitely NOT staying in. You’ll come round and have dinner at our house. We’re already having people round.’ She squeezes my arm. ‘You’ll have fun. I promise.’ If only I were Jewish so my mum could introduce me to a number of eligible bachelors. Or if I were Indian, the whole community would find me someone. But who’s ever heard of the mixed-race community? What mixed race guy wants to meet his mixed-race other half? My mum is Jamaican and my dad is English. In the eighties I was ‘half-caste’, and in America I’m ‘bi-racial’. Whatever. I’m Black. Or am I? ‘I’ll expect you round at 8:00. Ok, Sarah?’ Georgina kisses me on both cheeks. ‘Don’t be late. Oh, and put something sexy on. I’ll invite that single friend of John’s: Greg. Who knows,’ she sings shrugging her shoulders, ‘perhaps you’ll hit it off.’ I walk along Regent St. towards Covent Garden, looking in shop windows. The perfect outfit in Jigsaw’s shop window jumps out at me. I stroll in crossing my fingers, and snatch a size fourteen off the rack. I glance at the mirror. Youpee. It fits. I need to be irresistible tonight. Now I’ll be the catch of the century. Greg won’t know what hit him. Thanks to Jigsaw, I’m actually starting to look forward to it. Singleholic Sarah will be looking for love in the next edition of Life in Colour.
