A Young woman of Achievement Bola Abaje
The Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement
Bola Abaje was awarded the accolade of The Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliated theatre (2008) for her debut play Gone Too Far, which was premiered at the Royal Court Theatre. Gone to Far is certainly a bold: uninhibited, brutally honest comical insight into the dark realities of life on a London council estate. This talented playwright grew up on the infamous North Peckham estate, which received a lot of negative press attention after the tragic death of Damilola Taylor. Nigerian-born Agbaje originally wanted to be an actress, studying media at university and then
going for countless auditions. ‘Many of the roles that I was going for were ones that I couldn’t really relate to as a young black female.’ Armed with plenty of determination, Agbaje decided to pick up a pen to create her own characters. “We must educate our young people about our beautiful culture and nurture them so they can grow to be a somebody.” Gone Too Far! A play by Bola Agbaje will be at the Royal Court 23 July - 09 August also at at The Albany in Deptford 14 - 16 August and at Hackney Empire 19-23 August.
A Young Man of Distinction Noel Clarke
Award winning actor turned director and screen writer
Award winning actor turned director and screen writer Noel Clarke has been making great waves in the film industry opening doors for other Black actors and aspiring directors. This 33 year old west London born actor, writer and director made his recent directorial debut in Adulthood 2008 a sequel of the critically acclaimed, self penned Kidulthood, released in 2006 which went on to be the years most talked about British film. A multi-talented star, Noel Clarke did not come from the traditional drama school background but learnt valuable skills as a former student of Youth Culture Television (YCTV) a free training scheme in Ladbroke Grove that provides professional and accredited courses to young people
in all aspects of television from writing and producing to directing and editing. His filmography is vast and varied and he has appeared in several television dramas including The Bill, Holby City, West 10 LDN and most famously took on the role of Mickey Smith in the recent revival of the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. Clarke explains his aim is “to tell young people you can do positive things.” An obvious role model Noel has definitely already achieved the coveted accolade of being the first Black writer/director to have a west end premiere of his film and all at such a young age.

Tunde Banjoko to receive OBE for his charity work
T
unde Banjoko, Chief Executive and founder of LEAP, was honored with an OBE last month for his continued success and dedication to his evergrowing empowerment programme. Set up in 1996 LEAP is currently one of the most successful and inspirational, training and employment organisations in the UK. Tunde’s inspiration came from the streets, ‘I felt that something could be done to help unemployed people actively find work and I thoroughly enjoy what I’m doing’ he continues “I’m working with people just like me, who are helping people just like me” Growing up in London he has a developed a strong passion about race and equality issues, and as a result he is currently involved in mentoring black school children, which he does voluntary through local youth clubs. Tunde admits that LEAP has surpassed all of his expectations “I didn’t expect the organisation to be as successful as it is, I didn’t expect it to run as long as it has, and I certainly didn’t expect it to help as many people as it has.’ Tunde is now a well-respected inspirational speaker who has created a stepping-stone for black organisations specialising in helping their communities. Growing the Empowered Child

Every parent regardless of race or economic background wants his or her child to grow into a happy, responsible, successful adult. We also want to see a world of peace and tranquility in which each child’s full potential can develop and be celebrated by all. In his book Growing The Empowered Child, Brother Ishmael provides practical ‘tools’ on how to raise a child without anger and fear, something that is not taught through the current educational system. These tools support raising a child who is able to recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of themselves and others: “When this is done we have cultivated a powerful and peaceful child whose weapon is love. This is the formula for peace and progress” Brother Ishmael Brother Ishmael Tetteh (the mystic of West Africa as he is commonly known as) is a Spiritual Master, whose international presence and message of World Peace over the past 30 years has empowered thousands of lives from Africa, to Germany, to the United States and also the UK. His recent trips to the US has forged new friendships, including Dr Rev Michael Beckwith, Rhonda Byrne and Jackie Canfield all of whom participated in the DVD phenomena “The Secret” one of the fastest selling DVD’s in America last year. His philosophy for harmony of the mind, body and spirit, has guided thousands of students and patients to heal conditions considered terminal by Western medical practitioners.
Growing empowered children His audiences are introduced to Ancient African Healing Techniques, these are the same techniques utilised in his Hospital programme in Ghana, where spiritual, herbal, and traditional medical practices are brought together. “Fear and anger are the most fundamental forces or negative emotions that cause conflict in relationships. This conflict between parents in turn affects families, crews, rival gangs and subsequently the wider community. Our youth are only mirroring the actions they see around them by adults.” I first encountered Brother Ishmael 25 years ago. He soon became my coach and mentor and we have remained close ever since. I am now the founder/ Chief Executive of Urban Voice UK, an organisation providing creative training, development and empowerment to young people as well as a father of two beautiful empowered children. Together with Brother Ishmael, R-World Ents Ltd will present a series of seminars and workshops to discuss illustrate and demonstrate The Growing the Empowered Child™ programme, which I have used in part to empower my own children. “This programme is truly powerful and I believe will be of benefit to many.”
Friday 4th July from 6:30 This can be achieved through raising and educating a new generation of children: without fear; without anger; who learn to discover and celebrate their uniqueness. “Imagine teaching a child of 2 years how to play chess - sounds impossible well it’s not, how do I know, because I did it.” This workshop will be aimed at those engaged in parenting including, mothers, fathers, grandparents, other family members, educators, kindergarten teachers, after school teachers, youth club leaders and any concerned members of the community. COME JOIN US DISCOVER HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, YOU TOO CAN BE “A DIFFERENCE MAKER” There are a limited number of places for each workshop. If you would like to attend one of the workshops or seminars email info@ukurbanvoice.com now to register your interest. “A man cannot know what a man does not know until another shows him, but he first must be ready to learn a new thing” Please forward this to anyone you think may be interested. he experienced and well esteemed business man Basil Arrindell and his formidable company Hill Davenport is a big name in the multi-million pound industry of big screen media around the world. After accumulating a noble 32 years of sales, marketing and media experience Basil is now a world leader in his industry, having previously owned a huge global enterprise and pioneered concepts in telephone sales and on screen advertising. At one point in time Basil had around 400 members of staff worldwide and numerous offices including Toronto, Sydney and Shanghai just to name a few. But this humble gentleman explains, “I would have described myself as wanting to be a media mogul in the past, but in reality it breeds more problems than profit”. Basil’s decision to sell off his world-wide operation and keep his UK office
based in the heart of the business district of the Docklands was a result of a premature retirement. Basil jokes, “I don’t recommend early retirement, you need to be around 90 years old”. After a 3 year retirement period, the simple life became suffocating for this revered business man and he describes feeling frustrated. Having learnt many valuable lessons Basil warns that there are many pitfalls along the road to success, “When you are sailing the Seven Seas sometimes you hit waves, some people cannot take the pressure and there is a need to jump off the ship. That is human nature and this is when you really sort out the true winners. ” The owner, founder and managing director of Hill Davenport a company that provides giant screens for the biggest cultural, sports events internationally, Basil masterminded the concept of on screen advertising at the
1994 Atlanta Olympic Games. He goes on to explain the concept, “Basically it is an outdoor television with commercials in between. For me the fantastic difference here is there are millions of people watching and they can’t change the channel when the advert comes on. There are great benefits to this type of advertising, as there is a captive audience of hundreds of thousands of people”. Hill Davenport cherry pick only the biggest events including the official Times Square New Year’s Eve Celebrations, The Monaco Grand Prix and Euro 2008. Basil states, “We constantly turn down dozens of events a week. an we only do the sexy ones”. With countless successful events under the organisation’s belt, asking Basil which event he found the most exciting to be part of proved to be a very difficult question indeed. But Basil admits that the very first project he was involved with was very special to him; the

10 Goodwill Games, an international sporting championship which was founded by Robert Edward Turner in 1985 in reaction to political troubles of the Cold War. Basil’s company secured the marketing rights for the Russian sector, “I decided to sell advertising over the telephone, which was completely unheard of. Many people told me it wasn’t possible at the time and now look at the world of telesales. ”A defiant streak is evident throughout Basil’s life, he originally aspired to be a journalist but after completing his studies he was told by his teacher it was near impossible to be successful in his chosen industry and that the odds were stacked against him. “The worst thing you can say to me is you can’t do something, because I will do everything in my power to prove you wrong”, says Basil. Subsequent to a short period at LBC radio as a tele-printer machinist, which Basil jokes was
“A grand title for a runner or a dog’s body”, he started a job selling advertising for £80 a week. This officially was the birth of Basil’s career in the sales industry. “I seemed to have a knack for selling. I never wanted anyone to sell more than me; second place simply is not good enough”. A product of Antiguan and Monserratian parentage, Basil believes, “You are born with a competitive nature and it can be nurtured as you grow up”. The hunger to be no.1 was instilled in him from a young age as he reminisces on the great influence his father had on his life. As a child his dad taught him the techniques of a stooping start and brought him a pair of blue spikes for a school race. Basil continues, “I was so embarrassed, all the other kids were laughing at me. I tried to explain to him that this wasn’t the Olympics, but I knew I would get licks if I didn’t do it. At the end of the finish line he stood there with a
ten shilling note”. Basil has no intention of going back into retirement anytime soon, “When I was younger I set myself a target of buying a Rolls Royce, but when I finally was in the position to purchase the car, I realised I did not really want it any more. I am never content”. “I see life like an American football game, once the ball is thrown to you, you have to struggle forward. If you don’t have the kind of strength to hit the blockers, then you must develop skills to get pass the obstacles. Most importantly there is no chance of turning back”. As for the future, expect to see Hill Davenport screens at an event near you.

akeem has lived an adventurous life travelling down many off roads till he finally joined the highway to success. A self-confessed hustler who has dabbled in selling fine vintage wine, property development and even played on reggae sound systems, his ability to adapt like a chameleon has enabled him to be at the top of his game. “I had to have that versatility, the ability to think outside of the box with a real thirst to learn” says Hakeem. Now a high-powered businessman with three very successful companies, including Leaders in Land, Prime Acquisitions and Get Out of Red; life for Hakeem is very different from the days when he used to do menial factory work, “ Its crazy to think that just 7 years ago I was packing paper for a printing company. I always felt that this could not be it for me and there
must be more to life.” After studying Graphic Design for 3years, Hakeem realised quickly that without experience his qualification alone would not get him where he wanted to be and decided to find another avenue. He believes that his art training has been beneficial to him in the corporate world, in creating a strong brand and corporate image. He admits, “I had all the ideas and design in my head but I needed some technical help making them manifest on paper. My biggest advantage is I’m always looking at the bigger picture.” With both of Hakeem’s parents in the medical profession and once owners of a successful nursing home, there were high expectations that he would follow in their footsteps. But Hakeem had other ideas in mind, “In fairness I could have worked at the nursing home living a
comfortable life but I wanted to build something of my own. ”He states, “I’ve never worked for a set salary, it’s always been a commission based arrangement, reason being,” I want to create my own wealth” Raised in Tottenham Hakeem confesses that he understands the streets, but made a conscious decision not to be a product of his environment. After working his way up the corporate ladder, this young entrepreneur feels it is his responsibility to give back, he explains, “I have employed some of my friends and brought them out of the scene, I wanted to show them that they are capable of becoming whatever they want to be, Street life is not the right path.” The role of mentor is difficult as not everyone may have the hunger to learn but Hakeem has a real passion for this new position. However, he points out that everyone he trains must start

14 at the bottom and acknowledges he is very regimented and anal when it comes to business. “I will guide them and invest my time in them but it is not an easy ride, I am real, there is no sugar coating the truth.” His new business is a perfect example of Hakeem’s desire to give back to the community. Get Out of Red is a debt management company deals with creditors on the client’s behalf eliminating stress and simplifying all the confusing legal jargon. “The credit crunch has led to many people falling into a downward spiral of debt so it was prime time that this was set up”, Hakeem continues to explain that his business is about helping people and offering a longterm solution. So far the company has dealt with 34 cases, and has saved three clients from getting their houses repossessed. The company is preparing to expand nationwide, panning a major
awareness campaign to ensure that people know that there is help out there. As the CEO of Leaders in Land, a very lucrative land investment company Hakeem learnt about business modules and ways to maximise his investment. The company buys land for future development 5 miles outside of overcrowded villages which are soon to become towns before the developers come in. This genius idea means that developers must buy the land from the investor, “One acre of land with planning permission costs around £1.4 million but this same acre of land will cost only about £150,000 without planning permission” says Hakeem. Land is a prime commodity as it can’t be recreated or reproduced and is the perfect investment as the price of land generally increases by Don’t be trapped by debt a staggering
15-20% each year. Hakeem acknowledges that his job may seem glamorous on the surface but he is constantly on the phone crunching numbers, “You may have to talk to 100 people till you get that one deal. It is your responsibility to prove your worth; the world does not owe you anything.” One of his motivations is inspirational books in particularly Rich Dad Poor Dad. He also admires motivational gurus such as Bob Procter, “When he goes on stage you feel so much energy. It really proves that people with financial wealth have a structure they go through.” That structure reflects not just in the world of business for Hakeem but also in every facet his life.

Charles Gordon
In The Pursuit of Happiness
by Janelle Oswald
16
I
N THE blockbuster movie The Pursuit of Happiness, Hollywood heartthrob Will Smith plays the character of homeless salesman-turnedstockbroker Chris Grander. Inspired by a true story, Grander approaches a flash young jock driving a sports car. Mesmerised by the vehicle, Grander approaches the guy and asks: “What do you do and how do you do it?” Stunned by the question, the car owner politely replies: “I’m a stockbroker,” leaving Grander totally enthused to follow the stranger’s career footsteps. At the end of the film, Grander drives off in the sunset in his new Ferrari having accomplished his goals as a successful broker. A moving story that touched millions around the globe, many critics argued that a tale like Grander’s could only happen in America – poor black man turns into a successful millionaire – however Opulence has found the
UK’s version of Grander, Charles Gordon. Pulling up outside the Hilton in his canary-yellow Lamborghini, dressed in a bespoke three-piece pinstripe suit, Gordon has just returned from Las Vegas where he was partying with the likes of Sug Knight, P-Diddy, Jay –Z and his wife Beyoncé, plus Sylvester Stallone while watching the recent Joe Calzaghe fight. “Life is good,” says the multimillionaire who made his first million age 21. “I’ve got my health, my businesses are flourishing but most importantly I’m happy,” he states. “Have you seen the film The Pursuit of Happiness?” I promptly asked. Smiling Gordon replied with a positive ‘yes’, stating that the movie holds a special place in his heart. “The Pursuit of Happiness reminds me of me,” he laughs.
“Although we come from different backgrounds Grander and I are quite similar, especially at the beginning when he asked where did you get that car?” Observing the slick south Londoner, Gordon’s demeanor overturns the notion that wealth doesn’t contribute to a person’s happiness. “Of course money makes you happy,” he states with confidence. “It’s not the sole sauce of a person’s happiness but it plays a big part. “I can remember when I couldn’t even afford to eat and slept on various friends’ floor. Now I have countless pads and I can eat whatever my heart desires without looking at the price.” The 30 year-old who was romantically linked to Su-Elise, a former member of the British RnB group Mis-Teeq, told Opulence that his journey to success has not been an easy road. “ I was always in trouble at school

17 and I left without not knowing what I wanted to do or become,” said Gordon. “I was never an academic.” Brought up by a traditional West Indian background – Father, Gassell is from Bahamas and mother Andréa is from Jamaica - Gordon’s lack of professional direction frustrated his father, resulting with him being booted out of the family’s nest. Mirroring Grander’s homeless status and living from one friend’s floor to another, while out walking one day Gordon spotted a Porsche and was taken back by its sexy bodywork. Nervously approaching the driver, Gordon asked: “What do you do and how do you do it?” “Real estate,” replied the stunned driver in a Cockney accent. “I buy and sell properties.” Determined to be a success, Gordon took the stranger’s telephone number, who he still keeps in contact with today, and
began to research the property market. Purchasing his first property deal in Dulwich, south east London for £43,000, Gordon renovated the house, found a buyer and sold the house earning himself £2,000 profit in the process. “ I still remember how I felt closing my first deal,” stated Gordon, “it was better than sex.” With the proceeds of his first deal, Gordon set up a letting office, which he was able to wrangle rent-free for six months, furnished it and was open for business. “Yes, I’ve been lucky but I have also worked very hard,” states Gordon. “Many people want a business but are not prepared to put in the hard work.” Reciting the philosophical saying: “Everybody want to eat the corn, but nobody wants to plant the seed, Gordon adds: “Life is definitely what you make it. What you reap, is what you sow. “I’ve worked very hard to make
it where I am today. None of this happened overnight and I definitely did not have a fairy Godmother.” He continued: “What I did have was pure determination especially because everybody expected me to fail.” The millionaire continued to state that because he was repeatedly told he would never be an academic on leaving school, his instinct was to start his own business, rather than go to college or work for an employer. Sharing one of his secrets of his success, Gordon reveals to Opulence that he uses his ‘English sounding name,’ to his advantage by creating the public perception of a white-owned company. “People didn’t know that Charles Gordon was a black man. I created an illusion the public wanted to see and it worked.” He adds: “After I built a good reputation I then revealed I was the owner. It’s not always about being pro-black, but winning.”

18 Gordon’s concept was a success and within the fourth year of launching Charles Gordon Investment he had become a millionaire. Making an average turnover of £8 million per year, Gordon’s success gave him the confidence to launch his second business adventure, Credence. A prestige estate agent, Credence develops exquisite homes and gated community developments around the UK, which boast builtin jacuzzis and saunas. However, the self-made millionaire did not stop there and his entrepreneurial skills led him to launch Charles Gordon Entertainment Management aka C Gem. “ I decided to launch C Gem because I realised that the British music industry was lacking originality,” said Gordon. And his initiative was spot on. Gordon’s musical prodigies represent some of the country’s
top artists and acts- including supreme dance duo Booty Luv.
Booty Luv’s first hit single Boogie2nite peaked at no.2 in the UK, spent 8 weeks in the top ten, and went on to sell over 200,000 records. The group has recently been awarded silver plaques for their achievements on their debut album Boogie2nite which sold over 60,000 copies.
Booty Luv’s success has also secured them their own perfume fragrance and clothing collection with the popular high street brand Funky Fish Clothing. Other artists in the C Gem’s portfolio include DJ Paleface, Big Brovaz, DJ SKT, Hannah Rose singer songwriter, new girl group Fe-Nix and new boy group UFO. But all work and no play would as they say ‘make Gordon a dull boy’. When not in office, suited and booted, Gordon is sun tanning his frame on different exotic islands around the world
and jet setting above London’s skyline as he is studying for his Private Pilot License (PPL). “If I don’t allow myself to have enjoyment and learn how to eliminate the stress there would be no point to what I do,” says Gordon. He adds: “If my physical, mental and spiritual health is not in order then I would not be any good to my businesses or my friends and family, especially my daughter. Interrupted by his Blackberry for the umpteenth time, Gordon politely indicates that he needs to take care of business. Ordering the bill, Gordon ends the interview by saying: “ I believe in the six Ps. Perfect planning prevents piss poor performance. “If you apply this formula to most things in life, you will eliminate unnecessary stress, get the results that you need and most importantly separate the timewasters from those who mean serious business.”
