The Rochas Foundation

THE JOURNEY SO FAR There is no human endeavor that has no beginning or story behind it. No matter the situation one finds himself in, the best way to approach life is to have a fundamental knowledge and experience of DRIVE and PASSION. The story of The Rochas Foundation could be better termed the HUMAN EPISTLE of Love, Philanthropy, Care, Sharing, Determination, Vision and Self-will and divine providence. Rochas Foundation Inc is named after the Founder/Visioner, Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha. The early life of Rochas and the experience of his humble beginning could only be described as a metamorphosis from grass to grace. In his words “I came from a poor home where I had to engage in street trading. I know what it is like to stay at home while your peers are going to school; I know what it is like to be rejected in the midst of people, I know what it is like to suffer deprivations”. The dream that someday life would smile at him and his likes endeared him to struggle through menial jobs while tenaciously pursuing his education. Rochas was determined to become a success for both him and his generation. The Covenant Amidst this period when Rochas was going through the wilderness of life, he

made a covenant with God Almighty stating: “God, bless me that I may bless others; give me that I may share with those who do not have; honor me that I may honor others, because on my own I can do nothing, but I can do all things through Him that strengthens me”. Keeping to the Covenant and with keeping God as his strength, Rochas can now be called a success, an enigma and politician - a position that he never thought would materialise into anything other than a dream. However he never lost hope in God and today he can safely say “To God Be The Glory”. “Do not forget how it all started”, Rochas says, hence with a heart of love and pity for the underprivileged in the society whom he sees as part of himself, he strives daily to identify with them and touch their lives positively. He sees himself giving not out of comfort but out of sacrifice for makind. Sacrifice that starts with sharing food with the less fortunate even if it means depriving himself. Rochas philanthropic activities and care for the underprivileged grew as the days went by hence his decision to give it a global identitiy. This led to The Rochas Foundation, incorporated under the Companies and Allied Matters Act of 1990

on the 24th February 1998. The objectives ad activites of The Rochas Foundation can be epitomized in the following categories: - Educations - Health and Social Responsibilities - Economic Empowerment Education The foundation’s vision for education focuses on the children of the poorest societies who have lost hope of going to school. Recalling how difficult it was for him to attend school, Rochas spreads the knowledge that education is the bedrock of personal and societal development. He considered the provision of free education to the children of the poor as a positive means of bringing them out of poverty, misery and social oblivion. This led to the establishment of the Rochas Foundation College with the motto we educate to empower! Activities in this area include: • T he establishment of Secondary Schools that offer Free Comprehensive Education to the children of the poor including accommodation, transportation, feeding, clothing, Medicare, allowances, etc. Presently

there are 5 of such colleges in various Parts of Nigeria namely Owerri, Kano, Ibadan, Jos and Ogboko with plans underway to open new ones. There are over 4,000 students of the Rochas Foundation Colleges. • M ore than 500 people have benefited from the Scholarship schemes that have been set up. • Education of children whose parents died of HIV/AIDS from primary to university level. • Training of physically challenged children. • The training of very intelligent children studying at home and abroad. • Assistance to other schools and universities in developmental projects. The Rochas Foundation College and the scholarship scheme is sponsored by the Rochas Foundation Inc. Health and Social Responsibilities The activities of the Rochas Foundation in this area include: • P rovision of funds for treatment of patients with special ailments. The Foundation has sponsored kidney transplants and other special

Medicare to people oversea. • D onation of drugs and hospital equipment to hospitals, sponsor free vaccination against some dreaded diseases. • Reach out and Touch Program (ROTOP)– a monthly and annual event where the Foundation gives hope to the hopeless and brings life and assistance to people. Many people have been touched by this program. • Community development services, provision of infrastructural services to the people like electricity and bridges are all ROTOP projects.

Reach Out and Touch More lives in and outside the country hence the task ahead is enormous. The need to open more colleges cannot be over-emphasized. About 20,000 pupils sat for the last entrance examinations across the country with the first set of students graduating by 2007. As a result the drem of providing them with a Universty education is a drem come true. The Foundation belives that if you are unable to train a child the ability to at least sponsor ones education is a possibility. See the Student’s Profile; Rochas Foundation University (ROFU) now.

The Rochas Foundation, under the Economic Empowerment Program (ECEP) undertakes the following:

The Foundation intends to commence her “Second Chance Education Program (SCEP) where school drop outs and adults who were unable to recieve a full education can return to school to be given a basic education.

• A ssisting the underprivileged to start small scale businesses (the Foundation believes in teaching people to fish rather than simply giving them a fish). • Various programs that empower people to be self-reliant fall under this program. • Motor vehicles / motor bikes free interest loans. Vision Of The Founder by the Director General

T

here exists a fundamental link between children and the future of their communities across the world – the children of today will inevitably become the leaders and thinkers of tomorrow. Therefore, more emphasis needs to be placed on equipping these children with the tools and knowledge that will enable and empower them to become the best leaders and thinkers they can be for the future of humanity. This simple idea resonates particularly within the developing world where the process of progress and development will transcend generations. Owelle Rochas Okorocha was born into poverty and for the most part of his youth I only dreamed of being able to provide for his immediate family, and even that was quite a dream to attain because for many who live in poverty the daily concern is how to put food on the table for their families on a day-today basis, nothing more. The Rochas Foundation is the culmination of that dream which began with Rochas on the streets of the South Eastern City of Owerri Imo State, Nigeria trying his hardest to survive from dayto-day. During these very difficult times he could envision a future for himself because he did not consider himself as a person that society needed, he felt he was sent to into this world as a curse, but the one thing he came to believe overtime was that God, who had created him must have done so for a purpose, and because of this he refused to give up hope. He made a vow with

the Creator that in any way God blesses him, he will go on to bless others. He never forgot this vow, and so with lean resources, the grace of God and a strong will to succeed, the dream was born. In 1994 the Rochas Foundation was formed as a non-profit organisation that sought to better the lives of the poorest in society; to enhance their chances of making a fruitful life for themselves and their families, and to become contributing members of the community. The Foundation began work with reach out programs; visiting orphaned children and the homeless, offering food, warmth, companionship and comfort - because when one is destitute, it feels as if the entire world is against you and no one is your friend. In this little way the organisation would like to believe hope for the future became clearer. We the Rochas Foundation then moved on to dealing with the minor health problems these poor people suffered from; providing basic medical treatment and assistance that they could not afford due to their financial circumstances. This was the start of the Reach Out and Touch Program (ROTOP). What has been offered most often, and most well received, through the ROTOP is the simple gift of comfort. The organisation’s wonderful visits to the Leprosy Colonies in Karu, Northern Nigeria where it dedicated a day to interact, eat, drink, and listen to the issues effecting these communities illustrates how the powerful act of dedicating time in one’s life to care and share can bring reassurance, and as such wellbeing to the forgotten amongst us.

The ROTOP is very active in the field of HIV/AIDS awareness, spreading knowledge and importantly preventive information throughout the country. Often, people are afraid to get tested for the disease because of societal perceptions which often results in many sufferers becoming ostracized from their families and treated as outcasts in their communities. By bringing awareness and knowledge of the illness to the public there is a better understanding of the causes and ways of avoiding the infection. Our awareness campaigns also lobby governments and the pharmaceutical industry to do more to provide affordable treatment for all. The organisation’s HIV/AIDS awareness day which is held annually, is captioned “de-stigmatization through interaction” and aims to quash the stereotypical misconceptions that there is a plague and all sufferers should therefore be banished. During this event the organisation interacts with individuals who have tested HIV positive. They eat, drink, dance and generally have a really good time in each other’s company. Doing this helps to let others in society know that these individuals are as normal as anyone of us, and should be embraced and cared for as we would with anyone else that may suffer from any other illness. It is in the field of education that the Rochas Foundation is most widely known throughout Nigeria. The Rochas Foundation Colleges are secondary schools that are free to attend for those living beneath the poverty line. The

schools offer the best education to children from very underprivileged backgrounds – and everything is free. At Rochas Foundation Colleges (Jos, Kano, Ogboko, Ibadan, Owerri) the essential stepping-stones for success are provided for: quality education, nutritious meals, health care, life-skills, and character development, as well as parent and community outreach. All those working within the schools - teachers, students and administrators alike embrace the philosophy that “academic learning must be complemented with good character development, a positive selfimage and a commitment to caring for others”. This philosophy ensures that the simple conviction which started the Foundation fifteen years ago will be multiplied many times over, changing the lives of all the Rochas Foundation children and impacting positively on their families, communities, and our future generations. The Foundation Colleges started out of the desire to help the children who spend their days hawking goods on the streets of Nigeria for a living the opportunity to receive an education and a better future. These children, most of who are of a school going age are unable to go to school because their families cannot afford to pay the tuition fees. Students are encouraged to work very hard as inscribed in the school’s motto: “Hardwork, Hardwork, Hardwork”. To encourage excellence, the foundation rewards the two best overall students from each year and from each college with a trip to a youth summer camp

overseas with the opportunity to interact and exchange life experiences and to also learn about other cultures and societies around the world. This reward scheme is now in its third year and has had a tremendous impact on the performance of the students as they are all motivated to work extra hard to gain the top grades for their respective years. The Foundation’s Colleges take in about one thousand new students every academic year and as the number of schools are set to increase, so too will the number of students enrolling each year. The hopes of these children and many like them across the world cannot and should not be dampened so there is every need to assure sustainability. There are plans to build further schools around Nigeria, including the development of an International school based in Abuja. The Foundation is also near completing the building of its first University which will give access to students graduating from the Rochas Colleges the opportunity to further their educational pursuits.

The Rochas Foundation will always continue to serve communities struggling with poverty, especially children because the foundation believes that the hope for a better future and a better world rests in the tools and knowledge that we empower the children of today with. I take this opportunity to thank all those within the Rochas Foundation that have worked tirelessly to make that bit of a difference to the lives of so many. To God be the glory

A CALL TO ACTION FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF

THE ROCHAS FOUNDATION

Mrs. Nkechi Rochas Okorocha Vice President Rochas Foundation

The predicament of the children of the poorest members of our society is ominous and real.

T

o do nothing is to pretend that it does not exist. As a society, we must always reach out and help those among us that are in obvious need. This forms the basis for the works of the Rochas foundation. The foundation through all activities aim to make a difference everyday in the lives of many that are indigent.

Our activities are far reaching from visiting the Leprosy colonies to offer those hope, companionship and just simply to show them that someone cares, that all hope is not lost. These activities include arranging for very sick individuals to be treated either locally or abroad depending on the situation, in extremely hopeless cases, engaging with those living with HIV/AIDS in order to curtain stigmatization and also help to create and raise awareness of the presence and management of the diseases.

Our major project is in the field of education which has brought the foundation to the limelight through its Rochas Foundation Free Colleges. The Rochas Foundation Colleges are secondary schools that provide free comprehensive secondary education to the children of the poor in society, who have lost hope of education. Some of these kids were picked up from the streets where they were hawking or engaged in petty trading with their parents so as to put food on the family table instead of getting an education. For most of these children, their hope of having an education had been completely lost. They had been neglected by society which refused to recognize the need to help, and so their immediate preoccupation was fending off hunger and trying to survive by any means possible, sometimes leading them to engage in crimes and other illegal activities. For most, this is the only way to escape the clutches of poverty. and sadly this is the stark reality in most situations-but this should not be. The majority of children are incredibly intelligent and if given the opportunity, could certainly become great members of society wih much to contribute to their communities.

Mrs. Nkechi Rochas Okorocha Vice President - Rochas Foundation leading the HIV / AIDS Reach out rally

It is this opportunity that we at Rochas Foundation Colleges offer. The foundation provides everything free to the students. This includes their textbooks, writing materials, uniform including every from socks to school bags and of course tuition fee are all free. Two of the five Rochas foundation college have hostel accommodation for the students. To promote excellence the Rochas Foundation rewards the overall best four students from each college with a trip to the United States of America each year. For those who make the trip, it is certainly what dreams are made of and for the foundation, it is a way of showing our concern for the less privileged.

It is our desire to have the Rochas Foundation University ready by 2010 academic year. The foundation’s plan for an international project that can help children in Africa and across the world is a very exciting prospect. What a beautiful world it will certainly be if those who have can share with those who do not have and give those less fornuate the tools to be able to change their value of life. It is my personal wish that this mission started by the Rochas Foundation will rekindle a light in the hearts of all individuals, organisations, nations and their leaders so that working together, we can give hope to the hopeless around us.

Let us begin to see that giving a little today will make a better tomorrow not just for one individual but for the entire world. Education is the gateway to development. An educated child is a great asset to any community, and as the world attempts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), we must realize that we must help ourselves before we expect others to help us.

and Touch People Living with HIV/AIDS On the 26th of November 2004, the Rochas Foundation, a forefront NGO in Africa founded and funded by Owelle Rochas Okorocha, unveiled to Nigerians and indeed the rest of the world, one of the most comprehensive packages ever seen in the continuous fight against HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

T

he unveiling of this comprehensive package comes as a welcome relief to Nigerians most especially those living with the virus, having lost all hope in their individual battles and the life long struggle to access the much needed

by the Rochas Foundation and all lined up for the raffle draw and consolation prizes. It was a beehive of activities as the staff of the Rochas Foundation and hundreds of volunteer corps moved to and fro to get things perfect.

The decision of the Rochas Foundation is indeed all pro action, not only against stigmatization and the provision of the much needed drugs, but to provide assistance, information and economic support to those who have dependents and themselves to take care of. It was unanticipated that the event held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja which was billed to start at 4:00pm that Friday afternoon started 4 hours before the official time. Hints that the event may turn out to be

Born in the attires of WOTCLEF donated by the wife of the Vice-President Hajiya Titi Abubakar and the Rochas Foundation, the very important guests started arriving from all over the country as early as 11am. As they filed into the hall, they carefully took their seats at the well decorated banquet tables. On both sides of the hall were equally elaborate dining tables professionally laid out by caterers with mouth watering cuisines including African dishes. To further add to the excitement of the day was the sight of the prized items. The items included 4 brand new Peugeot

Lost in the crowd were Owelle Rochas Okorocha and his wife Nkechi, who in spite of sleepless nights still found the energy to supervise the work. There was constant music live on stage blaring from the massive turbo speakers mounted at strategic points around the hall. The event was well underway when the first lady, Chief Mrs. Stella Obasanjo finally arrived at the venue. In her entourage were the chairmen of the event, the minister of health Prof. Eyitayo Lambo

and his wife, together with the DG of NAFDAC Dr. Dora Akunyili. Also present on the guest list were the former Senate President the Rt. Hon. Anyim Pius Anyim, the former governor of Kano State Alhaji Kabiru Gaya, the representative of the Chief of Army Staff and two justices of the Supreme Court, the Most Reverent Dr. John Onaikun and representative of a countless number of stakeholders and NGOs in Nigeria. Also represented were two major NGOs from the United States of America. The sensational child protégée and singer Benita Okogi gave a solo rendition of the National Anthem then prayers took place. The hostess of the house, Lolo Nkechi Okorocha

welcomed the guests and made them feel at home because her responsibility as a mother and wife was extended to the entire hall for the benefit of all present. The Chairman of the occasion and the Minister of health Prof. Eyitayo Lambo and the respected judge of the Supreme Court both delivered speeches and papers on the fight and constitutional right of PLWHA. The First Lady in her special remark gave emphasis to the importance of the event which she described as very significant; she particularly lauded the efforts of Owelle Rochas Okorocha for making the event unique. When Owelle Rochas Okorocha mounted the stage to deliver a rousing speech, even the walls of the hall were all ears. It was a moving speech that was meant to

11

give life to those who have lost hope. While some went round to distribute drinks, the rest took to the buffet tables as waiters. The message was clear: everyone that day in the hall was equal to the other. All wined and dined together and none could make out the PLWHA let alone discriminate against them. That day stigmatization was defeated, scrunched up and finally thrown out of the window. While they ate, artists took to the stage to entertain the guests. There was the Foundation Choir; Benita, and other special guest artists as well as gospel singers. However, the pop sensation Zacky Azee delivered his special tribute “Mata” to the women in attendance. All were lost in the excitement of the day, until it was time for the main event which was the raffle draw. Called on the stage to conduct and supervise the prize draws was Dr. Dora

Akunyili, Prof. Lambo, Representative of the Chief of Army Staff, former governor of Kano State Kabiru Gaya together with their host Owelle Rochas Okorocha and his wife Nkechi. The prize draws started with the brand new Peugeot 304. The palpable excitement in the air when the numbers were being announced was thick enough to cut with a knife. Wen the winning number was announced, the winner was moved beyond speech, broke down and cried. Other draws followed simultaneously. Winners emerged in all categories to take away motor bikes, TV sets, Standing Fans and Canvass Chairs. Following the main event was the presentation of drugs by the representatives of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria. In addition to that was

a substantial cash donation which is to be shared amongst the PLWHA. In his closing remarks, Owelle Rochas Okorocha was quick to appreciate and thank all those who had contributed to the success of the event. He called on everyone present to rise to the challenge and provide the needed support to our brothers and sisters. The world, it may appear is losing the fight against HIV/AIDS at the moment by creating worse case scenarios for countries of Africa who neither have the resources to lead the ground breaking researches or the resources to spare in fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS. But this effort by the Rochas Foundation, if replicated can create hope for many.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER EDUCATION IS THE GREATEST GIFT TO A CHILD

Millions of African children are not going to school due to poverty instead of an education with its benefits, they engage in a street trading to enable them and their families survive. If we in our own time and generation do not address this ugly situation, which our present condition points out to us, we might be destroying the future generations of Africans yet unborn. The explosive world of illiteracy may be averted if you can teach a child today or sponsor the education of one. As we are blessed, let us bless others, as we are honoured, let us honour others, as we receive, let us share with those who do not have. Rochas Foundation is just a drop in an ocean of illiteracy considering the millions of poor children crying for education, your support can make a huge difference in the lives of these poor ones. Let us join hands together to build a new world where children irrespective of background will have access to quality education.

Rekke Jay-The Gifted Child THE ROCHAS FOUNDATION (UK) Registered charity No. 1125510

Please permit me to introduce the Rochas Foundation UK, a charity organization that is helping to empower the youths through Education especially those youths that are from less privileged backgrounds and neighbourhoods.

T

he Rochas Foundation UK is the forefront of aspiration, education and support of children with the ethos that ‘Every Child Matters’. The Rochas Foundation UK is registered charity in England and Wales as since August 2006. The UK Foundation is affiliated with the Rochas Foundation in Nigeria. In Africa, the Foundation has provided Education for free to over 4000 young people from poor backgrounds who would have otherwise not have had an education.

O

ne of the major philanthropic exploits of The Rochas Foundation is the sponsorship of Master Rekke Jay, a gifted child from Akwa Ibom state at Darrow Gifted school in New Lebanon, New York USA. Until 3rd Januar y 2002 when he left the shores of Nigeria Master Rekke Jay was a student of the Gwagwalada Special School for Gifted Children in Abuja Nigeria. At the age of two Rekke would dismantle computers and complicated electronic gadgets then put them back together despite his delicate age. He could not talk till he was three years old but at the age of four could read newspapers and magazines. His excellence was recognized when he wrote his first book of poetr y at the age of six. At eight he was awarded the title ‘child of the year ’. Rekke’s phenomenal intelligence was discovered at Faith Vile School in Ikoyi Lagos where he was promoted from primar y level one to four within one academic year. He later moved to the Home Economics Association School and the American International School Abuja where he became inventor of the year in 1998.

In the United Kingdom, the Rochas Foundation is working with local communities especially in deprived areas to counter anti-social behaviour and truancy. This is done by visiting schools, colleges and churches to interact and talk about the importance of education. Role models, motivational speakers and celebrities are invited to participate in interactive sessions. We also use audio visual methods, drama and poetry as part of our methods of driving home our points.

He was also a Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) Award Winner from where he was admitted into the Gifted School in Gwagwalada, Abuja where he met Owelle Rochas Okorocha, Founder of Rochas Foundation.

Please support the work of the Rochas Foundation in order for us to reach out to more of the many that need help. Thank you for your anticipated support.

The Honourable Minister of state for science and technology, Mrs. Pauline Tallen stated that “when the case of Rekke Jay was brought to me I did ever ything to secure government sponsorship for him but it was not possible. Rochas foundation deser ves a special commendation for the singular act of genuine charity and love”. Today Rekke jay studies invention and Creativity at the Worchester Institute of Technology.

A STORY OF HOPE

H

assan Bala is a young boy of 14 who lives in Jos Plateau State with his Mother, Father and the three other woman married to his Father. Hassan is the 16th of his father’s 23 children and his mother is the second wife. The Bala’s live in a part brick, part mud house with three bedrooms. There is only one toilet and an open space at the back near the toilet serves as the bath area. There is no kitchen and food is usually cooked in the open at a corner near the far end wall. Eleven of the Bala children live with them in this accommodation, the others are either married, serving apprenticeships away from home or employed as servants to families that can afford one. For Hassan, along with his 12 year old sister Rakiyah, his brothers Usman aged 9 Abdul aged 7, everyday starts with waking up at 6:00am to prepare the goods they will hawk on their trays. They leave home at 6:30 in the morning after having breakfast, which is usually Pap (maize cereal) and Akara (bean cake) to sell their goods along the highway. To make matters worse the streets they sell from are a far distance from their shanty neighbourhoods. Their father, Umaru has a maize grinding business and he is helped there by Hassan’s 16 year old brother Aminu who has hopes of taking over the business one day. Umaru makes about $17 a day grinding other people’s maize which they bring to his machine. On a typical day, Hassan and his siblings will be out on the streets hawking goods from 6:30am and scuffle home at 4:30pm bringing with them about $9 for the day. Hassan is the first of his father’s children to ever go to school and this was only possible because he was so determined to receive an education and better himself. His father never believed in getting education because he never had one and as far as he was concerned, he needed his children to start earning money as soon as they could so that there will be food on the table to eat. So in order to survive, all his children over the age of 7 had to hawk or engage in activities that would bring money into the house.

Hassan however, recognised that education would be the key to escaping his life of poverty. He also knew that his parents could not afford to take him to school and that they did not believe in education. All they knew was that there were lots of mouths to feed and money had to be made in order to feed them everyday. When Hassan heard about a free school opening in Jos, he told his mother and urged her to get him a form for the entrance examinations. After much persistence, his mother went and obtained the forms and Hassan began preparing. He would go on his daily hawking route and occasionally pass by some people selling second hand books. Befriending the bok sellers meant they allowed him to read a lot of the Mathematics and English grammar school books that they sold. Absorbed by dreams of attending school, Hassan would arrive home from hawking and recite English phases. Nobody at home held out any hope of him passing the entrance examination but Hassan persevered, sat the exam and passed. He was one of the pioneer students of the Rochas Foundation College Jos when it opened in February 2005. When I went to visit Hassan at his home to see his family existence for myself, I was not prepared to see the squalid conditions that were his reality. On the day that I visited I met his very beautiful sister Rakiyah who told me that she was soon to be married off to an older man of about 40 years old and be his third wife. I enquired further and she said that her father wanted her to get married so that he could receive her bride price which was more than his maize business made in a year. This is a true story and sadly, there are more like Hassan’s all over Africa and in other parts of the world. These people live in dire conditions that we may find difficult to comprehend, a life of great hardship and a very bleak future with no hope in sight. It is these less privileged people that the Rochas Foundation is reaching out to and attempting to offer a better life and a promising future to. There are less privileged people every where.

Education is an integral part of human development and achievement. Children are the custodians of our future and educating the children means a better future for them. At the Rochas foundation, all efforts are made to help not only the children, but the entire family out of poverty by empowering them. This way, Hassan’s father did not loose the income that Hassan used to bring into the family since he started attending school. It is hoped that the lives of many young people like Hassan may be positively impacted upon so that our young ones can benefit from the best education on offer irrespective of their family’s financial capability. We at the Rochas Foundation would like to envisage a world where all children are adequately provided with the necessary tools for their development, and this should be the responsibility of all society. Because of our intervention, Hassan’s sister did not have to marry the rich old man after all; the Rochas Foundation provided their father with another grinding machine so his income doubled. We also provided capital to his three wives so that they can go into informal trading for themselves. Rakiyah is now also a student at the Rochas Foundation College in Jos

OWERRI

ROCHAS FOUNDATION SECONDARY SCHOOL, OWERRI STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND GENERAL AWARDS At Rochas Foundation Secondary School, Owerri, Academic excellence and general good performance in public outings is synonymous with the name of the institution. Students sit exams independently and pass colourfully. In competitions, students perform well and most of the time returns with awards. PERFORMANCE IN NATIONAL EXAMS

T

he first national examination in which the school participated was JSSCE (NECO) 2004. In that examination, the entire group passed and qualified for an award. Out of the eighty students there were no re-sits and the final results were mainly A - C’s passes with only a few P’s. This success has been subsequently repeated in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 with the added achievement that no candidate has re-sat any paper in JSSCEE (NECO). At the senior level, i.e. WASSCE, the first batch was in 2007 in which the

school also presented eighty students for examination with the result being one hundred percent pass. Rochas Foundation School – Owerri are proud to note that none of these students merely passed the paper but were awarded with A and C grades. The story was the same in their senior NECO examination that same year. Also in 2007 the eighty students were registered for JAMB and they all passed even though they sat the exams at various centres. The class of 2008 was the second batch to be presented for senior NECO / WASSCE Examination and is predicted to have a one hundred percent pass rate.

ROCHAS FOUNDATION COLLEGE

KANO

Rochas Foundation College We Educate To Empower

T

he Kano school of the Rochas Foundation is situated in the Sabon Gari area of Kano state. Kano is the administrative center of Kano State and the third largest city in Nigeria, after Ibadan and Lagos. It is the second most populous city in Nigeria after Lagos, (with a population of 3,848,885). It has long been the economic nerve centre of northern Nigeria, and a centre for the production and export of groundnuts. The Old City houses the vast Kurmi Market, known for its crafts, with old dye pits still in use lying around. Also in the Old City are the Emir’s Palace, the Great Mosque, and the Gidan Makama Mosque. Kano has six districts; the Old City, Bompai, Fagge, Sabon Gari, Syrian Quarter and Nassarawa. The city’s traditional ruler is the Emir of Kano, and the current Emir, Ado Bayero, has been on the throne since 1963. The Rochas Foundation College (RFC) Kano was established in the wake of September 2004 with 250 students and 20 Staff, the scheme like its sister schools was established to provide free quality education to children of the less privileged in Kano. This gesture by the president and founder of Rochas Foundation Inc.

attracted lots of accolades as spot lights from all and sundry came down on the school due to its unique nature. The idea of a single man being able to embark on such a laudable project to provide everything free to the children of the less privileged was something that had never been compehended before. The Rochas Foundation College (RFC) Kano has not only stood the test of time, but has also witnessed the birth of 3 other Rochas foundation colleges (Jos, Ibadan, and Ogboko). Today RFC Kano is 5 years old with 575 students (JS 1 to SS2) and 50 staff, (Academic and non-Academic). The college waxes stronger each day with second to none academic facilities and highly qualified teaching staff. RFC Kano is equipped with first class conducive classrooms, a fully equipped computer laboratory, a fully equipped typing pool, a fully equipped music studio, 3 fully equipped science laboratories, a well equipped library, a 1,200 sitting capacity assembly hall and much more. In academics, the school does not compromise on excellence, just like our sister schools. We always set the pace for others to follow, little wonder every school in Kano state wants to compete with us. It will interest you to know that the state’s ministry of education visited

23

our school recently and for inspection, at the end of this inspection; some of our operational policies were adopted by the ministry and enforced on all schools in the state. We thrive in co-curricular activities and have excellent track records at competitions. RFC Kano recently emerged state winners of the Kano State debate organized by the Fix Nigeria initiative of the EFCC. Philip Abel, an SS1 student competed with SS3 students of other schools in Kano state in an Essay competition organized by the Integrity Group to emerge 2nd in the state. Others that deserve a mention include Nkiru Anyawu an SS1 student also added to the laurels table of the school by winning the 2009 BBC scriptwriting competition. We also excel at Sports, in the just concluded academic session, the Rochas Sparrows (football team) made the school proud as it played over 9 matches with different professional football clubs (not school teams). The matches were played in Kano and the Sparrows won all the matches, beating their opponents with less than 4 goals to nothing. What else can we say? God has been really faithful and we give him all the glory.

ROCHAS FOUNDATION COLLEGE

JOS

T

he Rochas Foundation College Jos is situated in the city of Jos at the northern edge of a pear-shaped upland known as the Jos Plateau. This upland stretches for approximately 104km, from north to south, and 80km from east to west. Characterized by impressive ridges and isolated rocky hills separated by extensive plains, the Plateau exhibits a variety of land forms which provide excellent picnic resorts. It maintains an average height of 1,200m (4,000ft) above sea level, and reaches its highest peak at the Shere Hills where it stands at 1,766m (5,829ft). Jos was established as a tin transportation camp in 1915, and its early history was closely linked to the prosperity of the mining industry. With a population of about 1,000,000, Jos remains one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Nigeria. It is adjudged the “home of peace and tourism”.

Situated almost at the geographical centre of the country and less than 300km from Abuja, the Federal Capital of Nigeria, Jos is linked by road, rail and air to the rest of the country. It has an equable climate with its average monthly temperatures ranging between 21° and 25° C (69° and 77° F). In September 2005 the beautiful city of Jos witnessed the birth of the Rochas Foundation college Jos with 225 students which increased to 345 students in the second year, 465 in the third year and currently the numerical strength of the college stands at 548 students (289 boys and 259 girls) and 41 qualified staff (32 teaching and 9 non teaching staff ). The foundation’s lack of compromise for perfection and excellence forms its basis for the recruitment of highly proficient and skilled staff; and this has helped the students to excel at everything they do in the school, both curricular and cocurricular.

In spite of being a very young school, the Jos College of the Rochas Foundation, is a force to be reckoned with in Plateau state, as not even old or well established schools can compete with it. The school has continued to top the chart of laurels/ medals table among government and private schools in the state. Amongst which are; • T he 2007 Cowbell National Mathematics Competition (State level) Florence Nwankwo (then JSS 3 and now SS 1 student) emerged state winner of the junior category. • I n the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Zirah All Secondary Schools Music Competitions, Rita Uwadiale led the indomitable Rochas Angels music group to a 2 year straight victory, 1st positions in 2007 and 2008; and in 2009 they emerged 2nd.

Rochas Foundation College We Educate To Empower

• T he 2008/2009 edition of the Nigerian Mathematics and science Olympiads competition, saw Christopher Onuigbo (JSS 3) winning a gold medal and a certificate of merit at the state level. This competition was organised by the national mathematical centre, Abuja. • A t the National Gallery of Art, Federal ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, In 2008, Israel Eziedo and Marshal emerged 2nd and 3rd respectively in sculpture at senior category, and in the 2009 edition, Charles Udeh (JSS3) ranked 1st and 3rd in sculpture (Junior category), Israel Eziedo placed 1st in sculpture (senior category) and Hamza Musa was paced 3rd in textile (Junior category). • N ational Association of French Teachers organized a competition at the State level this year, Christopher Onuigbo and Khalid Usseini jointly emerged state champions and will be representing Plateau state at the National level in Lagos in October 2009.

It is very important to note that the college does not only thrive in co-curricular activities, but also excels in academics, for us, it is a balanced system. The pioneer students of the Rochas Foundation College in Jos currently in SS1 wrote their NECO and state JSSCE in June/July 2008 and the overall result was very impressive, 95% pass was recorded in all the subjects including Mathematics and English language. We have contested and won many trophies in sport competitions within and outside the state. Apart from holding on tenaciously to the motto of the school “educate to empower”, we are pursing effectively the policy of building strong morals among students and staff. As a humanitarian organization, RFC Jos functions and operates as an outpost for reaching out, touching and developing the lives of the less privileged. Therefore, to actualize the vision of the founder and accomplish his mission of giving hope to the hopeless, our cherished core values in RFC Jos includes discipline, hard work, worshipping of God and caring for the poor.

Rochas Foundation College We Educate To Empower

E

stablished in September 2005 in the heart of the very busy and compact ancient city of Ibadan, the administrative headquarters of Oyo state, south western Nigeria, the Rochas Foundation College Ibadan commenced full operation with 137 students and 16 staff (Academic and non-academic). The establishment of the college at the Oke -Ado area of Ibadan; brought light, peace, development and total sanity to the area which was once noted for crimes, drugs and other social ills. The numerical strength of the school which rose from 137 students to 261 students in the second year has since then recorded steady yearly increase bringing the current number of students to 499 and a staff strength of 40 (Academic and non-academic). The Rochas Foundation college Ibadan, like its sister school operates on the

principle of Disciplines, Hard work and excellence. This has led the school to emerge victorious in state competitions curricular and non-curricular. The students wrote their NECO in June/ July 2008 and the overall result was very impressive. A 95% pass was recorded in all the subjects including Mathematics and English language. We are hopeful and optimistic that the result of the 2009 NECO/State JSSCE of the second set of our students that we are currently awaiting for will be better than that of last year. The success we have recorded so far in RFC, Ibadan is a clear indication that the vision which led to the establishment of the school is a guided mission by God to foster a progressive and formidable movement in the forefront of promoting free qualitative education, moral and social standard of responsibility and direction among hitherto hopeless Nigerian children.

27

In addition, our sports and games are progressively being developed and strengthened. Since inception, the school has contested and won many trophies in sport competitions within and outside the state. Management, staff and students are encouraged by these achievements and are determined to consolidate and improve on the above performances. These achievements are eloquent testimonies to the fact that bricks and mortar do not determine excellence in performance or productivity in keeping with Amiel’s saying, “Institutions are worth no more than those who work them”. In other words, good quality and highly motivated teachers are crucial and indispensable in setting of high standards in schools. And this is the Policy in which the foundation colleges were founded upon.

SUBJECT ANALYSIS OF THE 2007/2008 JUNIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION RESULT AS RELEASED BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION IN OYO STATE Rochas Foundation College, Ibadan, emerged “The school with the best overall result in Oyo State in the just concluded 2007/2008 JSCE EXAMINATION”. SUBJECTS

ROCHAS UNIVERSITY

OGBOKO

(Proposed) University Building

There is little doubt in this country that the academic system which is the de facto reproductive mechanism of our society needs to be strengthened. Ever since the demise of colonialism in Nigeria, we have been trying to re-adapt our academic system to produce authentic world class professionals with Africa at the heart of its concern: to also decolonize the African Psyche and liberate all from mental slavery. human endeavor: from the sciences to the humanities. Nonetheless we still agree that much more needs to be done; some complain that our educational structures are still too rigid, idealistic, and fettered, some say too theoretical and so on.

T

he triumph of the Nigerian educational system lies in the fact that in less than half a century after colonialism, we have produced professionals of the highest order in virtually every field of

Our proposal to establish the Rochas University is therefore a proactive step towards the revalidation of the efficacy of Nigerian education in general, even in the presence of some seemingly intractable challenges. It is after all by now a forgone conclusion that the only way that we can speed up the rate of progress is by the demystification and diffusion of wealth creating knowledge and complex information among the

broadest ranges of our society. The founder’s passion thus is the unification of the practical aspects of learning with the theoretical for higher productivity and more positively transformative results. The diffusion of such relevant knowledge will not only increase the intellectual capital base of this country, it should also benefit the psychological basis for a tangible and sustainable development at a time when Nigeria requires all hands on deck in order to achieve our aspirations and desires as a people. For a frame of reference, the Planning and Implementation committee is

to set up a system that will facilitate requisite social capacity building techniques and structures, while simultaneously increasing our national pool of professionals in the shortest possible time with the least possible waste. Without compromising the time tested internationally accepted traditional learning techniques, our challenge is to provide a radically innovative curricula comprising of efficacious interdisciplinary synergies that foster

and authenticate our mission, vision and value statements. Ladies and gentlemen of the Rochas University Planning and Implementation Committee, are to be further guided by the fact that we are playing our part in helping our nation fulfill our cherished vision 20-20 goals; which if achieved, will transform Nigeria into a top twenty economy by the year 2020 (eleven years from now) - with our people reaping all the social benefits associated with that category.

The Rochas Foundation has gained valuable experiences over the years in high yield secondary education via the operation of 5 high quality schools to date in Owerri, Ogboko, Kano, Ibadan and Jos: where up to four thousand students are acquiring post primary education on a scholarship that includes; free tuition, free learning materials, free medical insurance, free feeding and in some cases free boarding.

32

R o c h a s U n i v e r s i t y We Educate To Empower

The raison d’être of this proposed university is partly due to our need to continue to foster the intellectual development of our secondary school graduates. The founder was deeply perturbed by the idea of just leaving our students to return to the rough and tumble of the streets; fully aware of their backgrounds. His prayer is to provide them with stronger backbones

through higher education. Our well earned reputation in transforming these children from the poorest of the poor into the latent gold of our nation is reason enough to indicate our earnestness and tenacity in the pursuit of our objectives. eorge Bernard Shaw, the eminent Irish Playwright once wrote in ‘Maxims for Revolutionists’ that ‘lack of money is the root of all evil’. Thus, by reaching out and positively transforming the lives of the children of the poorest of the poor into productive members of society violent extremists are denied the ease with which they recruit the poor masses to run their disruptive enterprises. A few years ago, the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-UNESCO, revealed a disturbing study titled ‘The State Of Our World’s Children: Excluded and Invisible.’ According to the study, ‘children risk becoming invisible if their right to protection is unmet.’ ...’children also run the risk of exclusion if they are at risk of missing out on an environment that protects them from violence, abuse and exploitation or if they are unable to access essential services and goods in a way that threatens their ability to fully participate in society.’ A close look at the contemporary African societies reveal that most children from the poorest of the poor run the risk of being excluded from participating fully in society in the future unless something very drastic is done to improve the dire circumstances in which they find themselves. These disturbing trends have been occasioned by the presence of a large number of restless and unskilled youth who have turned to moneyoriented vices in order to be reckoned with. Certainly, the least any serious observer of the African social scene realises right away is that the insurgent movements that have provided so much apprehension to African Development in recent times are all related to lack of education. From the violent uprising in the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria, to Massob in the East and Boko Haram in the north; to even the pirates operating off the coast of Somalia, all present violent insurrectionary movements have drawn most of their diehard members from the poorly educated or uneducated masses. For the first time in contemporary Africa crimes by children have become part of our daily staple of News, most of them stark reminders that our society is doomed if we fail to educate the masses of this continent. We indeed will be sitting on a time bomb whose inevitable explosion will spell total calamity for this continent and her people. Something needs to be done quickly! As the founder of the Rochas Foundation organisation aptly puts it as ‘correct the ugly situation which our present condition is pointing out to us’. It will be to the eternal credit of the Founder for establishing the Rochas foundation; a non religious, non governmental and not for profit entity, whose mission has been the alleviation of the plight of the underprivileged and impoverished in our society. The plight of the poor in Africa seems like an unassailable cesspool where 70% of a population has to make ends meet on an income of less than one dollar a day. As a third world nation most of our people are not only poor, they are also young with a birth rate of 2.38% per annum and an average life expectancy of 47.1 years. An overwhelming majority of the children end up on the streets as hawkers, on the farms as labourers, in households as servants, in businesses as unpaid or under paid labour, in crime syndicates as political thugs, in violent gangs as petty criminals, miscreants and hoodlums, in the slums as unproductive drug addicts and as child soldiers and mercenaries misused by violent adventures and

criminals whereas children their age in America, Britain, France, China and other first world countries are engaged in compulsory learning leading to higher education and acquisition of sophisticated skills and well paying jobs or correctional institutes awaiting to be reintegrated into the mainstream. Truly, the condition of existence for these children and the prospects of a better life is nothing to wish on your worst enemy’s children, and these are precisely the children the Rochas Foundation has chosen to uplift. The only qualification for enrolment in the schools is poverty - 90% of the students are orphans from every nook and cranny of Nigeria.

Rochas Foundation Volunteer Corps E v e r y

The Founder of the Rochas Foundation organisation will rather teach the poor to fish than just give them fish. Thus, the Rochas Foundation’s living motto is: ‘we educate to empower... and the philosophy is to the point and philosophical: ‘that every child has a right to a quality education irrespective of their parental backgrounds - by implication; education should not be the privilege of the children of the affluent few, it should be made available to all. If indeed we must succeed in transforming Africa then it will serve us all to set right that ‘every child counts’ in this struggle. For as much as the African people may like to believe in this ideal as reflected in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) in reality, it has been long recognized that it is wishful thinking to expect third world governments particularly facing budgetary limitations to do it all within the required time frame. In confronting the enormous reality, the Board of Rochas Foundation came to the conclusion that the only way that we could ever come close to the ideals of the MDG’s is by philanthropic intervention and input, hence the establishment of the Rochas Foundation Colleges as high schools where the children absorb the virtues of hard work and volunteerism. The Founder has been uncannily correct in another of his beliefs that among these indigent children are the future Presidents, Ministers, Engineers, Physicians and famous explorers of our era. In every state where it has been situated, the Rochas Foundation students are among the award winning few - the very stone which the builders refused that becomes the head cornerstone. This is because our students have excelled in every competition to the utter amazement of all. They have performed beyond the expectations of everyone and have surpassed the intellectual prowess of most of their age group from affluent classes. The first set of graduates from RFC Owerri scored a near perfect mark in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and some 90% of them are now enrolled in the top universities across the Federal Republic of Nigeria where they are studying in every known field of academic pursuit. The Rochas foundation will be graduating the third batch of its pioneer students with stellar results; the students, whose marrows have been soaked in the virtues of hard work, are among the best in the country. For the Founder, the heart rendering aspect of the whole exercise is that of all the 40,000 candidates that will sit for the Common entrance examinations to enter the school only 1000 will be accepted for instruction every academic year due to limitations in space; your guess is as good as mine as to what the fate of the remaining children would be.

The Rochas Foundation Volunteer corps VISION 2010-2015 ‘Every Child Counts’ The Grand dreamer has spent sleepless nights pondering the fate of the African poor and their children keenly aware that the children are the future of this continent. Undaunted, the quintessential Philanthropist and Humanitarian who continues to amaze the world with the magnitude of his

charitable deeds summoned his genius to create the Rochas Volunteer Corps (RFVC). The RFVC’s mission is to educate 1,000,000 children from the lowest rungs of the economic ladder by 2015. To empower one million people in the next ten years is not a child’s play - it means that the Rochas Foundation will have to increase enrolment in the schools by 99% from the current 1000 students admitted to 100,000 new enrolments per year for the next 10 years! The Founder of the Rochas Foundation however decided that it was time to diversify the sources of the school’s funding in order to accomplish the task at hand by entrusting power to units of the Rochas Foundation Volunteer Corps who will be the foot soldiers in the ‘free education for all campaign’. The RFVC fundraisers are charged with raising funds for placing students in any school of their choice no matter where they may come from; though the students will still be supervised by the Foundation via the volunteer Corps outreach workers for progress reports to sponsors. They are also to raise money and build entire schools from scratch in communities around Nigeria and Africa. The launching of the RFVC in Abuja and Lagos was a star studded event complete with the brightest stars of Nollywood and the ‘whose who’ of Nigerian goodwill ambassadors like John Fanshanu, soccer luminary Tijanni Babangida and distinguished members of the diplomatic community in Nigeria and the international personalities.

The Proposed Rochas University - Africa’s First Free University for the Poor! To kick start the initiative, the Rochas Foundation has proposed the establishment of the Rochas University in Ogboko, Imo State - the home state of the founder. Disturbed that the graduating students from the Rochas Foundation Colleges nationwide would return to the rough and tumble of the mean streets, the Rochas Foundation’s proposed university will be the first free institution of higher learning for the poorest of the poor in Africa. The Planning and Implementation Committee of the proposed University composed of some of the most eminent scholars of Nigerian academia was inaugurated at the Abuja Transcorp Hilton on the 11th of May 2009 by the former Senate President of Nigeria - Chief Adolfus Wabara with the Venerable Professor Chinedu Nebo - the immediate past Vice Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka presiding as the Chairman together with the crème de la crème of the Nigerian intellectual establishment and haut monde. At the inauguration, indeed awed, the Nigerian Honourable Minister of External Affairs wondered out loud if the foundation’s Founder is a ‘magician’. The importance of the proposal was also illuminated by the Venerable Professor’s poignant morality tale - a true story of a brilliant student who never made it beyond primary school because his parents never could afford the few shillings required in post colonial Nigeria to pay for his tuition fees. This to everyone underscored the pain of how the African society continues to lose our best minds to the abyss of the social void, proof once more as the founder once remarked that; ‘talent and development is a function of opportunity.’ The push to empower one million people in the next ten years was subsequently given further drive when the RFVC commissioned her first free primary school in Ogboko, Imo state with the help of catholic nuns who are nonetheless to conduct a secular curriculum. Everywhere, The Rochas Foundation Volunteer Corps have been greeted with widespread admiration and support from corporate bodies and the society at large. The RFVC initiative recently received a boost with the participation of some of the most famous artists and entertainers in the country like St. Obi, Stephanie Okereke, Nkem Owo, John Okafor and others who have signed on as volunteers and ardent exponents in the great cause.

2Face Idibia leads other stars to sing the Rochas Foundation Volunteer Corps Anthem As a mark of gratitude for the foundation’s initiatives, some of the most illustrious and highly accomplished musicians and artists led by Nigerian pop star 2Face Idibia have rallied around the RFVC in specific ways to raise public awareness and endorsement for free education in Nigeria by lending their voices and talents to an RFVC theme song called “every child counts”. All proceeds from the theme song which has also become a de facto anthem for the volunteer corps and their supporters will go towards the cause of educating one million impoverished children by 2015.

ROCHAS

VISION 2010-2015

Education For One Million Poor African Children • Free Secondary School Education • Free University Education The evidence of societal problems is not due to the unavailability of a solution. It could be as a result of a solution that has not been allowed to express its potential, a solution that could be trapped in the body of another uneducated child living in a village somewhere in Africa. Everyday more children drop out of school because of their inability to afford quality education. But still, there are more who have no access to education at all. What future do we expect if nothing is done? Our unresponsiveness is reflected in the increase spate of assassinations, armed robbery, prostitution, militancy and other social vices in our society. Since no man is truly free until he sets other people free, it is our intention to set our solutions free by nurturing them from cradle to adulthood as we seek a desirable African continent.
