THE O’S DOMINATING DISPLAY V OLDHAM “I thought we played very well. Credit to the players. They applied themselves very well and could even have scored more goals, which is good to see. There was a little bit of a lull at the beginning of the second-half where we didn’t quite get going, but fair play to the lads they didn’t let Oldham back into it and we finished the match strong. It’s a good win that will encourage our supporters” THEO ARCHIBALD’S FUTURE “He’s on a season long loan, that’s the situation. We will see what the future holds. He will be with us this year. That’s what we’re concentrating on and we’ve been pleased with him. If you’ve got a song, it does help you, particularly as a forward.”
The O’s outclassed the visiting Oldham Athletic to jump into the automatic promotion places. Aaron Drinan opened the scoring with a neat tap in after a great run from Theo Archibald. Tom James netted the pick of the goals, after chopping inside Carl Piergianni to strike home with his left-foot. Archibald found the net midway through the second-half to set up a strong finish from the home team and it was the in-form Harry Smith who nodded the final goal, and his fifth of the season.
04
HARRY SMITH “He’s getting fitter the more he plays. There’s been a couple of times where he’s got tired by the last 20 minutes. He is such a strong player from set-pieces. He will get fitter playing more 90 minutes. He had quite a upset pre-season.” “He signed late, had an injury and then had Covid. He’s pushing himself and he has brought a lot to the team since he’s been with us.” TONIGHT’S MATCH “It will be a very similar group. Adam Thompson won’t make it but I do expect him to train next week. I do want to blend in some young players, but with experience.” “Bristol Rovers is of course the priority, however, we want to play the fixture. There will be a mixture. We haven’t got that big of a squad, so it’s a situation where they’ll all need to pull together.”

AGE: 17 POSITION: FORWARD
16
GIVE US SOME BACKGROUND ON YOUR FOOTBALL CAREER TO DATE? “I’ve been at Orient since the age of eight. Orient has been all I’ve known. It was my first academy. I’m still here aged 17, I’ve literally grew up at Orient.” WHO WAS YOUR INSPIRATION TO PLAY FOOTBALL GROWING UP? “Cristiano Ronaldo. His story and everything – I’ve always been inspired by him!” HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A FOOTBALLER? “I’m a creative, attacking and direct player who likes to score and assist goals.” WHO DO YOU WATCH AND TRY AND LEARN FROM? “I’d say Ousmane Dembélé. People say we’re similar. Oh, Patrick Bamford! My nickname at Orient is black Bamford, whenever I’m with the first team! That’s pretty recent to be fair, but yeah that’s what Omar and the lads call me, so I’ve been watching a lot of his clips.” WHO DO YOU SUPPORT AND WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLAYER FROM THAT TEAM? “I’m a United fan, so, of course my favourite player is Ronaldo! Before that it was Pogba. He’s been at it at the start of this season. What a player.” WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN THE PREMIER LEAGUE THIS YEAR? “I’m going to back United. The aura of having Ronaldo in the team will boost the whole dressing room. It just seems like everyone is on form because he’s in the team.” MESSI OR RONALDO? “Do you know what, Messi is probably better in terms of footballing ability, but I just love Ronaldo’s work ethic, it’s just so inspirational. I just like Ronaldo on and off the pitch.” WHAT OTHER PASSIONS DO YOU HAVE BESIDES FOOTBALL? “I’m very faithful. Religion is important. I do read my Bible a lot. My family are religious, but it is through my own choice. Omar and I will always go out onto the pitch before a game and pray.” TV SHOW OR A FILM THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND… “I’m currently watching Money Heist. I would recommend it. It’s top man, a top show. It’s mad.”
17
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECT AT SCHOOL? “RE. There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s based on opinions and you’re free to express yourself.” WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? “It’s an African one. Jollof rice. I do love a lasagne as well to be honest.” IF YOU COULD TIME TRAVEL, WHERE WOULD YOU GO FIRST? “Wow. So, I can go back and forward? Damn. I don’t know. What do I want to see? Maybe I’d go back to the 2008 Champions League Final to see United win.” IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “Teleportation. So, I could get to anywhere in the world.” DO YOU HAVE ANY MATCH DAY SUPERSTITIONS? “I don’t do anything like putting certain socks on first. I just pray.” WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT PAIR OF FOOTBALL BOOTS? “Puma Future. I’m a big, big fan. As long as they’re out – they’ll be my only boot.”
18
HOW WAS PRE-SEASON FOR YOU? “It was amazing to be around so much first team experience. I got the chance to play too, against three amazing clubs: Dundee, West Ham and Tottenham. I got to start against West Ham and Tottenham, which was a massive achievement for me and my family.” “I thought I did well, which topped it all off. It was a great experience.” WHAT WAS IT LIKE SHARING THAT EXPERIENCE WITH A GROUP OF ACADEMY LADS? “It made me feel a lot more at ease. When I first went away with the first team, it was my first time away. Having other youth team players around just helped me settle. There’s nothing like seeing your good friends shine. I was buzzing to go out to Scotland with them.” YOU’VE TRAINED REGULARLY WITH THE FIRST TEAM LADS – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FIRST TEAM AND ACADEMY, AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED? “I’m learning so much. The attention to detail is unreal, everyone is on it. If
19
the ball goes out in youth team, you just get the next ball, not in first team – someone like Darren Pratley will give you a wakeup call.” “Physically, it’s a lot more demanding and technically everything’s a little bit cleaner.” WHO IMPRESSES YOU IN TRAINING? “Dan Kemp, Hector Kyprianou and Darren Pratley. Prats does not stop running and he’s screaming as well! When you’re tired, usually you can’t speak, but Darren can run and shout all day! Even in training, but that’s what you need from a skipper. He’s a great leader.” FINALLY, WHAT’S THE GOAL FOR YOU NOW? “I want to get as much first team experience as possible and get my first professional goal as quickly as I can. That’s a big goal of mine. When I get the opportunity to play, which I know I will eventually, I have to take it. I want to make it a difficult decision for the gaffer. I want to make him realise I could be a potential starter for the team.”

ORIENT COMPLETE AN UNREAL COMEBACK TO BEAT STEVENAGE
STEVENAGE LEYTON ORIENT
3 4
(JOHNSON 5’, MIDDLETON 37’, GIROUD 42’) (TANGA 26’ 72’, OBIERO 67’, PEGRUM 79’)
Last time out, goals from Stevenage’s Giroud, Johnson and Middleton, with Orient’s Tanga getting two goals with one apiece for both Obiero and Charlie Pegrum. Stevenage found the net inside five minutes, after a ball from the left found its way to Johnson, whose effort deflected and ended up in the back of the net. The next threatening attack came down the right-hand side for Orient with a ball in behind for Smith-Kouassi. After some good trickery to beat his man he took a shot, but the player on the line blocked it. However, the attack was still alive as Tanga converted from close range. Despite Orient’s domination in the game, Stevenage found a goal against the run of play. A shot blocked by Saponara found its way back to the attacker Middleton, whose shot hit the post and landed into the back of the net. Not long after, Stevenage extended their lead again after a ball rolled to Giroud on the edge of the
20
box, before seeing his effort fly into the top right corner. The second-half started with Orient finding their second, as a superb ball from Reggie Pegrum found Obiero unmarked in the box. He took the ball down wonderfully allowing him to apply the finish past the keeper. Soon after, Orient were able to find the equaliser, a great ball from Clements found its way to Tanga who smashed his shot past the keeper. No saving that one. The young O’s gained the lead, with a great run from Tanga on the right-hand side, he played a ball into Charlie Pegrum who tapped the ball into the back of the net. Brian Saah and Alex Lawless sure do know how to give their players some words of encouragement. After good time management, Orient won the game completing an inspiring comeback. The O’s now look towards MK Dons at home.
CONTRIBUTOR KYNAN FOSTER
ZECH OBIERO Can you just tell us a little bit about your footballing background and when you joined Leyton Orient? “I was at Tottenham from a young age from U8s all the way to U14. I got released at U14 and I took a year out, to just play a bit of football, and to get the feel of football again; just to relax and have fun with it. Then U16s I came to Orient and from there I’ve been in the U16s and a first year now.” What position do you play, and what made you want to play there? “I play Central Attacking Midfielder, and what made me want to play there is that I like to be creative on the ball, I like to make stuff happen, assist people and also goals.” If you had to compare yourself to a player in your position that best resembles your playing style, who would it be and why? “I don’t think I play like anyone; I feel like I have my own playing style. But I like players in the 10 role, like how Neymar rolls into the 10 role and Ozil used to play in the 10. I like players like that.” What would you say is your best attribute? “I’d say creativity and ball striking ability.”
Do you have any goals that you want to achieve with your time at Leyton Orient? “I’d like to push into the first team, in the future maybe be a regular in the first team. From there just kick on my career really.” Can you remember what your first pair of football boots were? “It might’ve been a pair of Nike Tiempos, they were black with an orange tick. Ronaldinho was wearing them; my dad is a fan of players like that, so I was too young to be watching them, but he just adopted that into me really.” What football team do you support and who’s your favourite player? “Arsenal unfortunately… my favourite player is probably Neymar.” What is your favourite food? “I don’t really have a favourite food I just have a standard maybe pasta, rice and chicken stuff like that.”
21
What sort of music do you listen to? “I listen to a bit of everything really, you’ve got afrobeat’s, you’ve got gospel, American rap. A bit of everything, whatever I’m in the mood for.” What is your favourite song to listen to before a game? “Not a particular song, whatever the boys have on at the time. Who’s in charge of the stereo? I normally am, I’m the DJ *laughs* but yeah I just throw on whatever the boys are feeling really.” Who inspires you as a young person? “I’m inspired by Bukayo Saka, I like his character, and how he plays the game at such a young age, and Jude Bellingham. I think them two are mature in how they play the game and how they carry themselves.” What’s your all-time favourite TV show or film? “You know what I like the Fast and Furious series. That’s a bit of class that. I’m finishing Money Heist and I’m trying not to hear from people that are spoiling it, but nah that’s really good.”

LOFC WOMEN The start of the season has begun! The girls had an eventful game on Sunday against Ridgeway Rovers Ladies, which had to be abandoned on the 38th minute due to an injury to a Rovers player.
Moments later, weak defending from the O’s allowed Rovers centre forward a shot which seemed destined for the bottom left corner until Livi’s fingertip save pushed the ball out for a corner.
The 10am game against Ridgeway Rovers Ladies saw Tara Copeland captaining for the first game of the season, and winger Giulia Livi drafted in as an emergency keeper, with Lola Durojaiye ruled out.
The emergency keeper’s save spurred Orient into action and in the 38th minute Almeida almost doubled their lead, only for the shot to be blocked at the last moment. Unfortunately, this incident brought the game to an early end as Rover’s goalie and a defender collided. The resulting injury required medical treatment and lead to the game being abandoned.
After a slow start to the game, with Rovers dominating possession for the first ten minutes, the O’s pick up the pace and saw their first chance as Copeland’s shot drew a fine save from Rovers’ GK. In the 23rd minute the O’s took the lead, with Eve Pearson’s precise pass releasing Liliana Almeida who finished with a swerving shot deceiving the Rovers’ GK before hitting the back of the net. The O’s failed to deal with a Rovers free kick and stand-in keeper Livi showed quick reactions, making a fine double save from close range, maintaining Orient’s narrow lead.
28
“Obviously not the way you ever want any game to end. Thanks to the Orient fans who came to support. We wish the injured player well and hope it’s not too serious” – Olivia Worsfold. Despite the unfortunate ending to the game, LOFC Women had given a good account of themselves in their first competitive fixture and can be proud of their performance. Currently we are unsure as to what will happen regarding this game – but keep an eye on social media for any updates.
CONTRIBUTOR EMILY FORD
LILIANA ALMEIDA What position do you play? “I play up front, a striker. Actually, I usually play striker up front but recently I’ve been playing a new position - like behind the striker, so it depends what formation we play. But yeah, usually up front – striker.” What would you say is your best attribute? “My speed, my strength and my positivity.” Do you have any goals you want to achieve with your time at Leyton Orient? “Definitely get us to progress as high as we can in the league we’re in. Hopefully win the league and see what the future holds for next season. And personally, see what opportunities come from me playing for Leyton Orient this is my first season playing 11-aside ever,it will be great to see what comes about.” What team do you support and who’s your favourite player? “Manchester United. People always say ‘Why do you support United – you’re not even from there?’ It’s because Cristiano Ronaldo was at Manchester United, and because I’m Portuguese, I was always a fan of him. Then when he left I was like ‘I can’t keep switching teams’ so I stuck with United. My favourite player is probably Ronaldo or Marcus
Rashford, just because of the things he does off the pitch as well – he’s a really good guy.” What’s your favourite food? “You can’t ask me that – there’s too many things to even name! Probably pasta, I love anything to do with pasta. I love arrabbiata – so a tomato sauce with garlic and chilli, it’s really popular in Italy.” What kind of music do you listen to? “R&B, hip-hop, I love old-school music too. Anything that my mum used to play on Saturday mornings cleaning up! I just like genres in general, no particular favourite artist.” What’s your favourite song to listen to before a game? “I don’t really have like a pre-game ritual. I think it’s something that I do need to do – because with playing basketball we had playlists we used to listen to, but I haven’t started anything for football yet - so when I do have one I’ll let you know.” What were your first pair of football boots? “Total 90s – red ones.”
29
Who inspired you as a young player? “My step-dad definitely, because I was born in Portugal and when I came over here when I was five, he always got me into doing sports. On Saturday mornings he would wake me up and take me to athletics, and I was always in so many different sports in school. He would always push me to play football, play basketball, play all these different sports. And my mum too; both of them used to take me to all these different sporting activities when I was younger.” What’s your favourite movie about sport/ football? “Coach Carter is one of my favourite sport movies and Bend It Like Beckham is my favourite football movie. I used to watch that on repeat so many times.”

CASH CONVERTERS NAMED AS TOMMY JOHNSTON STAND SPONSOR
LEYTON ORIENT IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT CASH CONVERTERS HAVE SIGNED A 2-YEAR DEAL TO TAKE EXCLUSIVE NAMING RIGHTS OF THE TOMMY JOHNSTON STAND. The South Stand was originally renamed after legendary O’s forward Tommy Johnston in 2007 and Cash Converters, with local links and O’s fans in their leadership team, have always been adamant that the O’s Hall of Fame member would continue to be commemorated in the stand’s name. The iconic stand, home to some of Orient’s most passionate fans and with a capacity of 1336, will now be known as the Cash Converters Tommy Johnston Stand. Cash Converters, with local branches in Leyton, Walthamstow, Stratford and into Essex, offer buying, selling and loan services against most items of value, with knowledgeable and friendly staff in their branches all across the UK. Pa Lette, Commercial Sales Executive at Leyton Orient, said: “We are thrilled that Cash Converters have chosen to sponsor the Tommy Johnston
Stand. As soon as we spoke to Gary, we knew that he understands the values of the Club and that it is close to his heart. We very much look forward to welcoming Gary and the Cash Converters team as one of the partners of Leyton Orient Football Club.” Gary Lewy from Cash Converters grew up in Leytonstone and was taken to Orient games by his dad,
31
watching recent Hall of Fame inductees Laurie Cunningham and Peter Kitchen as well as following the 77/78 FA Cup run. More recently he has carried on the family visits to Orient with his 3 sons, experiencing Cup runs and play-off finals. He said: “It is an honour to sponsor the Tommy Johnston Stand and join the Leyton Orient family.”
Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
