“BOTH TEAMS WILL MAKE CHANGES IN THIS GAME, BUT LIKE WE SAW AGAINST CHARLTON, WE EXPECT IT TO BE A REALLY COMPETITIVE AFFAIR, WITH BOTH TEAMS KEEN TO GET THROUGH” 04
THE GAFFER
KENNY JACKETT
HELLO, AND WELCOME TO TONIGHT’S GAME WITH MK DONS.
A warm welcome to Liam Manning, and the staff, officials and fans who make the journey to East London tonight. We come off of the back of two disappointing results on the road, firstly a dominant performance at Scunthorpe United where we couldn’t put the game away. We had clear cut chance after clear cut chance, one-on-ones, in the hunt for that breakthrough, but we couldn’t find the killer edge, which was frustrating for us. We really appreciate the support that came a long way on a Tuesday night, and similarly the big number that came to Northampton. It was a great following, and we thought we’d have given you
more to shout about in that second half, but sadly we didn’t get going. We had chances right the way through the game, but once more lacked that incisiveness that we have showed a lot this season. We were of course disappointed with the goal, the flick on from the long throw, but more so our second half performance. Our passing was poor, we didn’t use our pace like we usually do, and we didn’t draw them out. There were two big chances for us, and a penalty at the end we should have had, right in injury time, but aside from those moments, they did a job on us, and we can play a lot better than that.
“WE REALLY APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT THAT CAME A LONG WAY ON A TUESDAY NIGHT, AND SIMILARLY THE BIG NUMBER THAT CAME TO NORTHAMPTON” 05
We don’t want to blame the referee or the conditions, we want to be a lot better than that, we want to be much more incisive and more effective. We’re hoping both Craig Clay and Paul Smyth will have a chance at being back with us this Saturday, both of whom we know can give us a lot in this team. It’s onto two cup games now, but we have to know that we’re not miles away. The games have been there for us, if we’d have stepped it up – and that’s where we want to be. Tonight will be a tough test against a team right up in the mix in League One, so we will have to be at our best. Both teams will make changes in this game, but like we saw against Charlton, we expect it to be a really competitive affair, with both teams keen to get through. KENNY

HI RHYS. HOW HAS THE SEASON BEEN FOR YOU SO FAR?
It’s gone better than I could have hoped for, in terms of playing actual games. Previously I hadn’t been able to play, so it’s been brilliant. The experience has been one I’ve really enjoyed. I had done my ACL in as a second year scholar, and was out for almost an entire year, which was obviously not a good situation to be in. Everyone in the club was really helpful though, and before long I found myself introduced into the first team, and since then it’s been a really good experience.
WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING WITH SIMON ROYCE, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM HIM?
He’s been fantastic with me. Being a young pro, it’s going to be tough on my body, but he’s been superb in handling me, in terms of knocks, injuries… but also working me hard so I stay robust.
Going back into the season, fitness was major, so in terms of physicality Roycey has helped me out tremendously, kept me fit, and I feel lighter.
THREE GAMES AND THREE CLEAN SHEETS IN THE PAPA JOHN’S TROPHY. YOU CAN’T ASK FOR MUCH MORE CAN YOU?
It’s the best solution I could have come out with! It’s what you want as a keeper, obviously to win first, but that clean sheet tops it off, and I’ve been buzzing from that.
“IT’S WHAT YOU WANT AS A KEEPER, OBVIOUSLY TO WIN FIRST, BUT THAT CLEAN SHEET TOPS IT OFF, AND I’VE BEEN BUZZING FROM THAT” 19
The Crawley and Charlton games were the most different games for me, with fans trying to put me off my game. But it was a good experience too, and it made me want to prove them wrong! I concentrated harder, and was on my toes a lot more. I enjoyed these experiences a lot.
LAWRENCE VIGOUROUX HAS SPOKEN HIGHLY OF YOU BEFORE, HOW DOES HE HELP YOU?
He’s fantastic. He’s helped me out so much. He probably doesn’t even realise it when he does. He sets such a high standard in training, he’s such a good goalkeeper, I’m always watching, taking notes. He’ll always be there to tell me what I can be doing better too, which helps me improve.
And on top of that he’s such a great person to be around, so that really helps too, as it makes you excited for training.
ANOTHER GAME AGAINST LEAGUE ONE OPPOSITION TONIGHT IN THE SHAPE OF MK DONS, EXPECTING A TOUGH GAME?
Charlton was the toughest game for us so far, but we dealt with it really well, especially as we went down to ten men.
20
Favourite goalkeeper to watch? Ederson. He’s so good with his feet, he’s right up there for me. Last film you saw? Cars. It’s unreal. Best animated film I’ve watched [laughs] Your favourite place to go for food? Nandos. Nandos is good isn’t it? Spice wise I’m a lemon and herb… I know, I know. I get battered for that…
We know what to expect in terms of quality, so we’ve prepared as well as we can, and we’re all confident of getting into the next round.
AND FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR AIMS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON?
I want to keep playing as much as I can, and this cup has given me the opportunity to do that. But beyond this competition, I want to keep improving, nothing has changed on that front.
21
Where you’d go with a time machine? The Roman Colosseums I reckon, that would be a good laugh. Song you’d sing on karaoke? I’m just going for a classic Oasis I think, Wonderwall is a go-to. Favourite holiday destination? Bora Bora, it looks incredible. The water looks so nice and the whole place is so relaxing, so there I think!

LEYTON ORIENT 0-3 SOUTHEND UNITED
Leyton Orient’s academy tasted defeat to Southend United last time out, with a 3-0 defeat the final scoreline. The start of the game was slow from both teams, as the first shot came after 12 minutes which saw Tanga have an effort on goal from the right wing, but it hit the outside of the side netting. The 36th minute saw Southend seemingly through on goal, however, Kwatchey collided with Southend’s Sandat, seeing Kwatchey being shown a yellow card. Not long after, Southend broke the deadlock after a ball was played out wide to Southend’s Amir, who collected the ball and slotted it low and hard to Phillips right-hand side. Minutes after the first goal, Southend found the second, as miscommunication in the defence saw Southend react and Sandat convert from close range. Minutes into the restart, Orient almost got one back. The ball came to Charlie Pegrum whose shot was blocked, seeing it fall kindly to the head of Nkrumah, but his effort was wide of the goal. Orient had another good opportunity as Fish took the ball down well and played the ball in behind to Clements, whose shot went over the bar.
Not long after Orient’s chance, Southend found their third goal. The ball was squared into the box, and it fell kindly to Southend’s Amir who dispatched his second of the game. Orient were still plugging away as a good ball into the back post by Fish was misjudged by the keeper, but Charlie Pegrum was unable to make contact on the ball. The last action of the game saw Clements play a good ball in behind for Fish to chase, but his shot was straight at the keeper. This saw concluded the game which saw The O’s fall short at home to Southend United. The O’s now look to next weekend, when they travel to AFC Wimbledon.

LOFCW BEGIN SUE SHARPLES CUP CAMPAIGN WITH WIN AT WANDSWORTH BOROUGH
After last week’s bruising win over Actonians LOFCW stamped their authority on this game from the first whistle. Liliana Almeida, the O’s number 7, opening the scoring in the first minute with a powerful shot from distance that arrowed into the bottom right of the Wandsworth net. Just five minutes later and O’s skilful midfielder Corradi had doubled the lead with a similar goal to Almeida’s opener – firing the ball into the bottom right corner after a well-placed pass from Grace Alexander. However, just a minute later Wandsworth were back in the game after being awarded a penalty. They made no mistake from the spot, leaving O’s keeper Lola Durojaiye with no chance with a thumping right-footed strike. The goal only spurred Orient into action, and they restored their two goal lead a minute later when a well-placed cross-box pass from Giulia Livi put O’s captain Tara Copeland through on goal for a cool finish past the Wandsworth keeper. After a brief lull, the O’s snapped back into action and Almeida made no mistake with Orient’s fourth - Wandsworth’s
goalie came off her line, allowing Almeida to place a curving shot over the keeper and into the back of the net in the 18th minute. Unsurprisingly, after such a frantic start to the game, the pace of the game dropped; Orient controlled possession without creating too many chances, though, Copeland tested the keeper with two fierce drives and Bobbi Ellison was unlucky with a powerful strike that dropped just wide of the right-hand post. The O’s regretted those missed opportunities as, just before half time, the back line failed to deal with a ball into the box and Wandsworth pulled a goal back with a close-range finish. Orient were in total control, and in the 75th minute a smart pass from Zahmena Malik put Copeland through on goal and the captain grabbed her second with an instinctive
27
finish from close range to make it 5 for the O’s. Wandsworth reduced the deficit again in the 82nd minute, taking advantage of a loose pass in midfield, to score their third with a thumping shot from outside the box into the top right. Orient swiftly took control of the game again, adding two goals in the 89th and 90th minutes. The first came from another well-placed pass from Malik, to Ellison, who finished with a wonderful strike over the keeper to make it 6-3. Eve Pearson rounded off the scoring after being played through by Malik, for her 3rd assist, with an unstoppable shot to wrap it up.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
