RECAP ON THE GAME “I’m pleased to get through. I thought it would be a difficult game. I thought Ebbsfleet would be good and lift their game against us. They have experience in their side. They did very well against us. They made it difficult for us.” “We got the first goal, which was the key one. In the secondhalf we got into some very good positions, but we couldn’t put the game away. We won the ball back a number of times in their half, but the finishing wasn’t quite there.” “We had enough of the ball up and around their box to be a little bit more incisive and put the game away. It wasn’t easy, I never thought it would be. It could have been a banana skin. The players did well to earn a clean sheet. We did limit them.”
The O’s earned a second round clash against Tranmere Rovers in The FA Cup, after beating National League South side Ebbsfleet United 1-0.
AARON DRINAN “He’s a big threat. He was good against Ebbsfleet. He showed pace and mobility. I thought his combination play with Harry Smith was very good. Harry will be frustrated he didn’t score at the weekend. Chances are still coming for him – he would of wanted to have put the game away with his header in the second-half.”
Aaron Drinan scored the only goal of the game, latching onto Shad Ogie’s perfect through ball, before firing past the goalkeeper.
04
“Aaron is improving all the time. We have good options up front. We have Sotiriou, Smyth and Omotoye. They all have to keep improving.” CLEAN SHEET “We had to earn it. They had some good breaks, it was an open game. We were incisive. As a team there’s great spirit among us. We had to show that when defending a couple of late set pieces.” CRAIG CLAY AT CENTRE-BACK “Alex Mitchell wasn’t available for us in The FA Cup. Craig slotted in at the right of a back three. He’s played right-back for us this season, so I thought he would be able to slot in. He’s a reliable type of player and he never lets you down. He didn’t let us down on Saturday. The decision meant I had to make a minimal amount of changes – which is what I wanted.” PAPA JOHN’S TROPHY “We want to win all of the time. We will rotate the side. We play Rochdale on Saturday, which is an important game. Tonight is important too – we want to win. We want to get through and have a home draw.” “Charlton will be strong though. They’re the sort of side that will have two elevens. It will be a very good test for us. We have to match them. We have people who need games and they will get a chance tonight.”

TONIGHT’S OPPOSITION
CHARLTON ATHLETIC NICKNAME: THE ADDICKS . GROUND: THE VALLEY . SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
We welcome Charlton Athletic ahead of this tonight’s Papa John’s Trophy clash at the Breyer Group Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
CARETAKER MANAGER:
JOHNNIE JACKSON
CHARLTON ATHELTIC 4 HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE 0
Jackson is currently caretaking the squad after the recent sacking of Nigel Adkins, following a poor start to their League One campaign.
The Addicks left it late to break down National League South side Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Cup first round. The non-league side put in a defensively sound performance against the League One side until the 71st minute where the pressure finally told. Josh Davison opened the scoring before Jayden Stockley’s penalty doubled the host’s advantage. Stockley got his second on the 85th minute mark and five minutes later Mason Burstow finished the scoring to secure Charlton’s place in the second round.
Since the 39-year-old took over as caretaker boss he has turned the Addicks fortunes around with his side winning three and drawing one in his four games in charge. Jackson made 279 appearances as a player for Charlton over an eight year spell, scoring 55 goals. This is the former midfielder’s first taste of management apart from a single game as caretaker for Charlton in March.
Starting XI: Henderson, Clare, Elerewe, Famewo, Souare, Blackett-Taylor, Arter, Morgan, Kirk, Stockley, Davison

ANTONY PAPADOPOULOS
IN THE SUMMER, ANTONY PAPADOPOULOS SIGNED HIS FIRST PROFESSIONAL CONTRACT WITH ORIENT. THE MIDFIELDER HAS STARTED BOTH OF THE O’S PAPA JOHN’S TROPHY FIXTURES THIS SEASON, AND IS LOOKING FORWARD TO MAKING MORE FIRST TEAM APPEARANCES. “It’s really good. I was with the first team a lot last year. The competitive nature of training isn’t new to me. Playing games, I’ve already made two appearances, has been really good. I just want to kick on, score more goals and add a few more appearances in all competitions.”
The O’s squad has a number of experienced players for academy graduates to look up to. “It’s very much a group collective. We have a close knit group. Everyone helps out. Adam Thompson gives me advice whenever he can. I have experienced players ahead of me. Look at Darren Pratley, there’s no one better to look up to.” “He’s played at the highest level. That’s where I aspire to be. So in training, I look up to Darren Pratley.” Papadopoulos scored on his O’s debut – smashing home from the edge of the area to fire the O’s to a 1-0 win against Southampton U21. “I’m raring to go. Some people don’t like this competition, but it’s good for young players like me. It’s a chance to get minutes. I was buzzing to score on my debut. I want to get more goals.”
17
The O’s face League One side Charlton Athletic tonight in the battle for top spot. “The Gaffer wants a team that always sets out to win. It doesn’t matter who is out there, we have a strong enough squad. Everyone is quite versatile. It will be a close game. We’re both tied on six points, but we want that home tie in the next round.” Following Orient’s win against Ebbsfleet United, the Gaffer confirmed there would be opportunities for people tonight, and Antony is keen to give Jackett something to think about. “It’s a chance for us younger lads to give the Gaffer a headache when ever he has to pick the team, or get in the back of his mind when he is making a sub. There’s training, but there’s nothing better than being able to show off what we can do in games. For players like myself, the cup gives me a chance to play in a competitive match and make a professional appearance. A win would see Orient top the group and secure a home tie in the next round of the competition. Orient have won their last two matches and another victory would help build confidence in the group.

Who do you support? I’m an Arsenal fan! Favourite all-time player? Either Henry or Bergkamp. What boots do you wear? Phantoms! My first pair of boots were Nike Total 90’s What was your fave subject at school? P.E. I can’t say that? Oh well, history!
“It’s all about confidence. A good performance tonight will help us going into the match on Saturday against Rochdale, The FA Cup and the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy.” “If we can make it three out of three, we will go into the next round buzzing. It doesn’t matter what competition it is, even friendlies, you go out to win. It always leads to better things.”
What would you be if you weren’t a footballer? I would probably focus on something to do with social media, and maybe even streaming. Twitch is pretty hard to get going though! Favourite Playstation game? Right now, I’m playing Vanguard, the new Call of Duty. I’ve already Prestiged! Film/TV show you’d recommend? The TV show I would recommend is Power! A film. The Equalizer – Denzel Washington. Favourite holiday destination? Cyprus! If you could time travel, where would you go? I would go back to the 90’s. I just love the fashion and the music! Three dream dinner guests… Cristiano Ronaldo, Tupac and David Goggins. I’d probably make them lasagne!

ACADEMY THE CUP RUN BEGINS!
The O’s put in a dominant 3-1 win in the first round of the FA Youth Cup against Leatherhead, which saw a goal from Leatherhead’s striker and Orient’s goals came from Clements, Charlie Pegrum and Smith-Kouassi. Orient applied a lot of pressure early on with Charlie Pegrum playing a lovely back heel pass into the feet of Nkrumah, but his shot was deflected wide and out for a corner. Despite Orient’s dominance, Leatherhead found the breakthrough in the 30th minute, as a ball from the right wing found its way to their striker at the back post, who headed it back across goal beating Phillips. The O’s didn’t stop plugging away as they found the equaliser eight minutes later. A powerful run from Nkrumah driving into the left side found Clements in space. His initial effort was miss kicked but the second effort found the bottom left corner. This concluded the end of the first-half, which saw both teams going into the break deadlocked. Minutes into the second-half, Orient took the lead after Smith-Kouassi shrugged off his defender before unleashing a powerful shot towards the keeper.Too hot to handle for the
keeper, he spilled the ball and Charlie Pegrum was alert to the situation and tapped it in. The corner resulting from the deflection saw Apat win the header falling to the feet of Nkrumah, but his shot was denied from close range by the keeper. Minutes later, a oneon-one saw SmithKouassi go around the keeper seeing an opening towards goal his shot was blocked by an onrushing defender. The attack was still alive as Obeiro had an effort on goal, but his effort was also blocked. A scare for Orient, as Leatherhead drove into the box and was supposedly
20
taken down according to the not so happy home fans. The referee didn’t see nothing wrong and waved play on, much to the dissatisfaction of the home fans. Smith-Kouassi got his goal after Nkrumah absolutely bullied his defender shrugging him off the pitch. He fizzed the ball into the box and a well-placed Smith-Kouassi put the ball into the back of the net. Any thoughts of an upset were gone as Orient dealt the final blow. Leyton Orient: Phillips, Kwatchey, Sodje, Harvest, Apat, Obeiro, Tanga, Clements, SmithKouassi, Nkrumah, Charlie Pegrum Subs: Reggie Pegrum, Eaton, Avgoustidis, Davies, Ojo
CONTRIBUTOR KYNAN FOSTER
SEAN CAMPBELL Can you just tell us a little bit about your footballing background and when you joined Leyton Orient? “I started playing football in secondary school, I started playing for a grassroots side, I was there for about around a year. I had trials at Fulham and Millwall, got signed by Millwall and was there for another two years and I left at the start of the U16s and signed for Orient and I’ve been here since.” What position do you play, and what made you want to play there? “I’m a goalkeeper and I’ve always been attracted to goalkeepers when I was young watching them make saves on TV. It used to be really magical, and it was always something I wanted to do.” If you had to compare yourself to a player in your position that best resembles your playing style, who would it be and why? “Andre Onana, were both quite powerful, I’m also confident on the football, not as good as he is,
but yeah I’m confident on the football. I back myself.” What would you say is your best attribute? “I would say my resilience, I’ve been through a lot especially this last year and to just keep going, keep pushing, I think that’s a really strong attribute.” Do you have any goals that you want to achieve with your time at Leyton Orient? “To get a pro contract obviously, but if not here somewhere else but just to be able to get a pro contract that’s what everyone aspires for in football. I think a more immediate one would be to just get game time because it’s something I haven’t got in the last year and a bit. It would be good to get a good run of games in.” What were your first pair of football boots? “I can remember what they were called, but they were a pair of Umbro boots. They were really old Umbro boots. They were white, blue
21
and red. They were alright, they lasted me a while, they are probably my longest lasting football boots.” What football team do you support? And who’s your favourite player? “Manchester United and David De Gea.” What is your favourite food? “I would say Jollof rice.” What sort of music do you listen to? “I listen to everything, French, afrobeats, RnB, Hip Hop, rap anything.” What is your favourite song to listen to before a game? “I’ve got two ‘Dreams’ by The Game and ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ by Meek Mill.” Who inspires you as a young person? “My dad, he’s been there for everything so far, so anything I can do to repay his confidence in me.” What’s your all-time favourite TV show and film? “Best TV show is Grey’s Anatomy, it’s like a doctor show and it’s really good. Best film I will have to go for Rush Hour 3.”

LOFC WOMEN LAST WEEKEND SAW THE FIRST LEAGUE FIXTURE LOST OF THE SEASON FOR LOFC WOMEN, FINISHING 3-1 AWAY AT IMPACT FC.
For the first ten minutes the two sides were equally matched but as the game progressed it became a much rougher game than Orient have been used to. The O’s ultimately failed to get to grips with a more physical approach and this proved to be their downfall. Playing as more of an attacking midfielder this match, Almeida hit what looked to be Orient’s first shot on target after being awarded a free kick in the 11th minute, but the windy conditions changed the curve of the forceful strike and lifted it over the bar. Another promising opportunity was passed up moments later when, after some fine set up play from Almeida and Copeland on the left wing, Malik failed to get a enough power on a shot. Impact’s goalie got a firm hand on the ball to push it out to safety.
It proved to be a short-lived let off though as Orient’s resolve was broken four minutes later when a firm right footed strike gave Durojaiye no chance and gave the hosts a deserved halftime lead. Although Orient were entitled to be annoyed when the ref blew early in the 44th minute. Half-time rethink from coaches Chris Bright and Harry Schrattmeier saw El-Mouden and Corradi off for Harrow and Ellison to get their chances on the pitch. With the O’s already rattled, three shots from Impact in the first 5 of the second half didn’t help calm their nerves. However, Durojaiye remained unfazed and made a great fingertip save on Impact’s third to help keep Orient in the game.
In the 19th minute the home side nearly took the lead after a dangerous goalmouth scramble but O’s keeper, Durojaiye, saved her side by bravely gathering the loose ball and taking a couple of blows at the feet of the opposition.
A couple minutes later we saw another substitution, Giulia Livi coming on for Tara Copeland. The change seemed to give Orient renewed belief and, in the 55th minute, somewhat against the run of play the O’s equalised. Malik found time and space to pass to Williams, who calmly found the back of the net.
There was no respite for Orient and in the 25th minute only a last second intervention from O’s defender, El-Mouden, prevented a goal scoring opportunity after a sweeping move from Impact.
Williams’ goal spurred the O’s on and for the next quarter of an hour they raised the tempo of the game and began to match the opponent’s tough tackling approach, but Impact FC showed exactly why they are
28
top of the league and prevented Orient from adding to their equaliser. Despite a much-improved second half performance Orient were undone by two quick Impact goals. The first, in the 70th minute, was a firm right-footed strike from the edge of the area that Durojaiye got her fingertips to but couldn’t prevent it nestling in the top left hand corner of the net. Just seven minutes later the Orient keeper was beaten again when the Impact centre forward, riding challenges from Ibrahim and Worsfold, broke through the Orient back line before slotting the ball in the corner of the goal. With the O’s tiring, Almeida’s chipped shot in the 81st inched over the bar and only added to the team’s frustration. The last shot of the match came from Jess Hillsden after the O’s won a free kick in a dangerous area – just outside the box but still central. Hillsden, known for her powerful strikes, cleared the Impact wall but was disappointed when the shot did not dip quite enough and inched over the bar. The whistle blew on an exhausting match, and despite their efforts, the O’s came out defeated but with a good performance nonetheless.

What are your aims for the season? “Top goal scorer, that’s the target.” Tell us a bit about you coming into the college programme, and then into the first team for Orient. “I only joined the college programme because of by friend Isabelle, she went to the college and she told me about it. So, I was like – it’s football, and I don’t want to go to sixth form, so I’ll just go to college. It was good, weird, but nice – it was a change and something different. That was a shock – having to train three days a week, it was a lot.” Are you local to Orient at all? “No, I’m from Chelmsford, Essex, quite far – but it’s not too bad on the train.” You must be excited to come to a club like Leyton Orient? “From playing with unorganised coaching to coming to Orient with great coaching and players - is a surreal feeling.” “Playing for Orient is an amazing experience.” “Walking the halls of the stadium is an overwhelming feeling.”

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

ON SOCIALS It is with sadness that the Supporters Club has to announce the passing last Friday of long serving committee member Mike Childs, aged 84. Mike had been suffering for a number of years from a recurring illness and for the past year was being cared for at Alliston House Care Home in Walthamstow.
Hector Kyprianou: Through to the next round! Proud to have made my 50th appearance for the club.
Mike was a well loved character and good friend to many at the O’s and played a huge part in the development of the Supporters Club over the forty years that he served on the committee. He was the instigator of the introduction of real ale into the club in the 1990’s which led to the club winning numerous awards. Mike’s work for the club where he spent so many hours preparing the club bar and for many years the other bars that the Supporters Club formerly ran, together with his good humour and loyalty will always be remembered and appreciated by his fellow committee colleagues and the numerous O’s fans who knew Mike over the years.
Shad Ogie
Mike was in and around the stadium on almost a daily basis, working at the Supporters Club but also lending a helping hand to anyone at the football club who needed it. He was devoted servant to the Supporters Club and to Leyton Orient FC and will be sadly missed. Funeral details will be announced shortly. Rest in Peace Mike. Harry Smith: A tough game and certainly not the best of performances but in that beautiful little velvet bag we go.
David Dodd Chairman, LOSC
