What’s the biggest mistake businesses usually make? Planning is vital, to not do so can cause cash flow problems. This can affect start-ups, where growth is not as quick as expected, but also established businesses who are growing when cash can be tied up. I’m a believer in the old adage “turnover is vanity, profit is sanity, cash is king!”

Do you have any good advice for those of us running our own business? Yes lots! Three simple steps that I would advise are, firstly, think about what you want from your business and then set it out in a brief business plan so you know what you are aiming for. It doesn’t have to take much time but in my experience is extremely helpful to help focus on what’s important. Secondly, having some form of cash flow forecast will highlight potential problems and give you time to do something about them. Lastly, know exactly what your profit margins are and regularly review them so you don’t undervalue what you do. Many businesses grow their sales but not their profits ending up busier but making the same or sometimes less money than before. Identifying and then putting your effort into what is most profitable and really understanding your costs can make a huge difference in being a healthy and successful business.
