New audio installation at Balmaha keeps visitors in the know

isitors to Balmaha on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond can learn some interesting facts about the local area thanks to an innovative and eco-friendly audio installation gifted to the community by local resident Joe Twaddle.

by Chrissie Bannerman, German by Thosten Hesse, French by Brian Prosser and Spanish by Ada Tebeni. Other topics – scripted and narrated by local musician Dave Arcari who also produced the audio recordings for the project – include the Highland Boundary Fault, things to do in the area and information about water life in the loch. The audio hardware was sourced via Black Box AV and installed at the boulder site by Sandy Fraser and his team of Willie Kirkland, Graham Scott and Paul Kott who have been instrumental in the overall development of the former toilet block site.

Located by the boulder that forms the focal point of a rest area beside the visitor centre car park, the self-powered audio point allows visitors to select a topic of interest, turn the handle and listen to the relevant narration. The main topic is an educational narration of the geological origins of the boulder and the surrounding area…told from the boulder’s point of view. The narration is based on a script by John Urquhart and is available in English, Gaelic, French, German and Spanish all translated and voiced by local residents and friends. The English version of the boulder story is narrated by Joe's wife Betty, the Gaelic version

Scottish Property Market

n the last year, the Scottish Property Market has remained a little more stable than the UK as a whole, with prices gradually on the rise. And in the latter half of last year the ever increasing customer demand has been better satisfied, with more properties coming to market and more sold. Sellers have been benefitting from the rises in price and demand. And it would appear that increased availability of mortgages, and of course the continued record low interest rates, is helping drive that demand, so helping buyers too. The Scottish Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first time buyers incentives are also helping new homeowners. Renters, too, are finding the market stable in Scotland, with the obvious exception of Edinburgh, where rental pricing continues to increase above the rest of the country. The shortage of residential property in Edinburgh and ever increasing demand will likely keep that upward trend going for some time.

f you have a birds nest in your chimney, it will probably have been built by a Jackdaw. No other bird has quite a love affair with our flues. There are numerous telltale signs to confirm whether birds are nesting in your chimney; smoke filling the room due to blockage, debris falling down the chimney, sightings of adult birds bringing food and removing fecal sacs and of course, noise from the chicks (enter your loft and listen for calls.) Although these pesky birds can be an inconvenience to you, it is important to remember that it is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built. To prevent nesting fit a properly designed bird guard to your chimney prior to nesting season in early March. Otherwise you will have to wait until July-August to have the nest removed and it is vital to fit a bird guard on the same day. Leave it 24 hours and the birds will have started to rebuild it.

PARK LIFE REVIEWS....EDENMILL FARM SHOP, CAFÉ & SOFT PLAY AREA Having two small grandchildren who have been asking every time we pass Edenmill if “the softplay is opened yet?” – I was delighted to take this opportunity and check it out during December.

he setting is really stunning with the carpark now landscaped, offering ample parking with disabled and family spaces available. The massive inflatable Santa had the kids very excited from the start and there was little time to explore the great selection of Christmas trees and decorations at the pop-up shop outside although I could see it was manned by some very cheerful looking Elves. The children wanted to check out the play facilities first and so lunch had to wait….. they were not disappointed with an additional room now available for adults and children to enjoy a good oldfashioned climb and play in the hay bales, there was a lot of fun had by young and old! Also in this room there was a an inflated bouncy slide and bouncy castle a bit like an assault course. The main soft play area has a good-sized play frame with a short steep slide that the kids all love, ball pit, swings and lots of secret hideaway bits that children always seem to find! There is a separate quieter area for the younger children where there are suitable aged toys for them to play with. The whole area has been covered in a

soft grass like flooring. In both areas there are ample tables and chairs the cafe staff are happy to provide carryout cups for any hots drinks that you might want to have whilst watching the kids play. Lunch was fabulous with the staff offering to cook something fresh to cater for my grand-daughters lactose intolerance. The menu is extensive, catering from a simple coffee and piece of delicious home baking, freshly made sandwiches and homemade soup to main courses of Fish and Chips, Meatballs, Steak burger to name but a few. The quality meats are provided by the on site butcher and after having the tasted the venison burger for lunch we bought some more before we left! The children’s menu for under 12 had a great selection too and priced at a very reasonable £3.95.

10 Years of Specialist Dyslexia Help in Stirling

019 is a significant year for teacher, Fiona Macdiarmid, who is known to many parents as Director of Stirling’s successful Kip McGrath Education Centre.

Fiona is passionate about helping people achieve their potential and for the last 16 years she has been running her own tuition centre. Ten years ago she travelled to New Zealand for training in the unique Cellfield Dyslexia Programme and since then has been delivering Cellfield in her centre. Fiona believes strongly in the programme’s capacity to improve the lives of people struggling with dyslexia and similar processing difficulties: “Cellfield is the most exciting development in education I have come across”, says Fiona; “I consistently hear from clients and their families that Cellfield is life changing because not only do they see improvements in reading and language, they also see a positive impact on overall self esteem”.

Based on neuroscience and brain plasticity research, Cellfield is a multi sensory programme which stimulates the brain networks processing visual and auditory aspects of reading. This leads to improved reading and language processing and average gains of up to 2 years in reading age can be achieved. Fiona advises families who feel their child is struggling to consult their child’s school in the first instance because there are many resources – coupled with good teaching practice – which can help. A sustainable community... Is this possible? Ruth Glasgow of The Hub G63 gives advice on what we can do.

e are a newly established social enterprise based in Drymen, but we exist to serve the G63 area. With our main focus on food we are working to promote and support sustainable living in the community. There is so much in the news these days about our future, climate change and sustainability but we felt that, being rural, our community often misses out on events happening in urban areas (even though we won’t escape the effects of climate change etc and we can definitely still take action to help). So, The Hub G63 is designed to bring opportunities to our community. This means, through e.g. workshops, raising awareness of global topics like the environmental impact of food etc but also more upbeat activities like establishing community food growing topics and getting people together over community meals. We are helping with the revamp of Drymen Playpark (led by Charlotte Wallace and Carol Still) which will include food growing, not

just for children but as a way of bringing different generations together to share skills and knowledge and just spend time together. We are working with the Scottish Food Coalition as ‘Good Food Nation Ambassadors’ to raise awareness of the proposed Good Food Nation consultation and Bill: we are hosting a potluck community lunch on Feb 23rd in the Church Hall to this end. We will soon launch zerowaste food retail (online ordering at first) and ultimately we are trying to find suitable premises for a shop front and so we can truly be a community Food and Sustainability Hub. Its not all about food – the date is yet to be confirmed, but in March/April we are bringing Transition Stirling to Drymen to host a Repair Café. You can bring small electricals/jewellery/ clothes along to be repaired by a team of volunteers. This is free of charge and encourages ‘reuse and repair’ rather than wasteful consumerism, which is unsustainable.

ur choir has been in harmony for over seven years. It has brought like minded folk together to expand our lungs, to laugh at our mistakes, to chat over tea and cakes and return home smiling. So that we don’t just keep it to ourselves we’ve organised a ‘Come and Join Us’ evening. Anyone and everyone is invited. Singing is optional but smiling and enjoying yourself is obligatory! And it’s free – except for a couple of pounds for the half time refreshments. You’ll see how we warm up, harmonise together and learn new songs with Jim our brilliant and charming choirmaster . Local Walks

Loch Venachar

Distance 7km Time 2Hrs Stage 1

There is a car park on the left at the end of the public section of the road to Invertrossachs along the south shore of Loch Venachar. Begin the walk by following the forestry track which climbs gradually across the hillside from here. The route soon passes a bench near some electricity pylons. Keep straight ahead when another track joins in from the left. The next section of the forest has been clear-felled and now gives excellent views across the loch to Ben Ledi.

Stage 2

The tall sitka spruces soon block out the views once more (unless more felling has taken place). After another kilometre or more a fork is reached. Turn right here to reach an attractive little lochan almost hidden in the forest, a good place to spot Whooper Swans. The track climbs round the north side of the lochan before swinging to the right back into the trees.

Stage 3

The track now passes through a rocky little bealach or pass, with a small quarry on the right at the top. From here there are grand views over Loch Venachar. Almost immediately the track forks; take the right hand branch.

Stage 4

The track makes a long and winding descent to the shores of Loch Venachar where it meets part of the National Cycle Network, specifically Route 7 which runs from Carlisle to Inverness. Turn right along this, which is a private tarmac road at this point.

Stage 5

The route gives excellent views across the loch, especially of Ben Ledi directly opposite and the Venachar cafe on the opposite shore. Pass the Invertrossachs Scouting Centre and the Loch Venachar sailing club before the track eventually leads back to the start after around two and a half kilometres.
