Ready for a good read this summer? One of the best things about summer holidays is a good book and the time to sit back and enjoy it – so kick back and browse our suggestions. The Girls of Slender Means Muriel Spark, Polygon £9.99
Bleak and often bizarre humour abounds in this tale of a middleaged man whose life is falling apart so he heads to a war-torn country and a hotel where he is going to end it all, only to discover that living does have some good points after all. A bit of a Marmite book but so far we’ve found more lovers than haters; it will appeal if you liked Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
ISBN: 9781846974311 This year marks the centenary of Muriel Spark, the Edinburgh-born writer most people will remember for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Scottish publisher Polygon is producing all 22 of her novels in hardback in a special centenary edition, each with a speciallycommissioned introduction. Jean Brodie is a must, The Public Image is a relevant today as it ever was and our choice is The Girls of Slender Means with an introduction by Scottish literary editor Rosemary Goring. The girls in question live in a boarding house established for the social protection of ladies of slender means aged under 30. Why not have a Spark summer and read all three or more, and discover why she is so high on The Times list of 50 greatest British writers since 1945.
Hotel Silence
by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir, translated by Brian FitzGibbon, Pushkin Press £9.99 ISBN: 9781782274216
Children of Icarus
Caighlan Smith, Switch Press £11.99
ISBN: 1630790575 The winner of the 2018 Scottish Teenage Book Prize, the good news is that a sequel is already on the way for this gripping fantasy novel. Be there at the start of the series. Every year in the city of Daedelum, children are chosen to enter the labyrinth surrounding the city walls. The promise is they will be guarded by angels and those who make it through will go to paradise but all is not as promised.
Happy Poems chosen by Roger McGough Macmillan £6.99 ISBN: 9781509871377
Roger McGough is a poet; broadcaster and onetime member of a hit pop group (ask your granny and papa). He has compiled a collection of poetry showing that happiness can be found in things, people and circumstances all around us. It features work from contemporary to classical poets; Carol Ann Duffy to William Blake. Take this on your family holiday and read aloud. A great way to unglue kids’ eyeballs from tablets and phones and reconnect them to the joys of the written word and the people around them, or RL as your kids might call it (real life).

Michael Wolff, Little, Brown £14.99 ISBN: 9781408711392 With extraordinary access to the Trump White House, journalist Michael Wolff tells the inside story; if you read Twitter, you’ll know Mr Trump did not give this book a glowing review. The US president’s planned visit to the UK will be one of the defining news events of this summer. The book you wish was fiction but you couldn’t make this stuff up. By Joanne Simms @westendlife

transport but one that offers both individual benefits and advantages to wider society. As well as the practical and health benefits of cycling, riding a bike brings confidence, freedom, and builds self-esteem. I believe these benefits are especially important for women. In many other countries riding a bike is just a method of transport like any other, this is possible here too.” Katie’s photography is on display in the Glasgow North constituency office, in Firhill Road, where you can view it until the middle of June. Katie said: “I was very pleased to get the opportunity to display the portraits of “Women who Cycle” at Patrick Grady’s office. I hope that many people will enjoy the portraits, and that it will promote cycling as a useful and normal method of transport. As well as a reminder that all road users are human, at our core we are all the same, and that respect, tolerance and patience are essential to keeping everybody safe.”
Concept & Design Katie was recently given the opportunity to contribute to the “Women who cycle” project with Bike for Good Community Hub in the South Side of Glasgow, started in 2017 to promote cycling skills, confidence and wellbeing. Her photography exhibition, currently on display in the constituency office, is a portraiture documentation of this project and hopes to draw attention to the importance and joy of cycling. Bike for Good are currently offering women only led rides and one to one skills sessions. These are a fantastic opportunity for women to develop their skills, build confidence and be part of a beautiful diverse community. Let’s Go Gardening! It will be around the start of June when you read this article and it is time to go. Go gardening. The threat of frost is very small now and the warm weather during May has the garden coming to life at some pace. In short, it’s growing season. It is time to get the bedding plants in, vegetable plants and summer salad greens underway and hanging baskets planted.
16 | West End Life – June/July 2018
There are a few simple rules to successfully grow bedding plants. Firstly, buy good quality plants. Poor quality plants may be cheaper, but be prepared to spend a few weeks nursing them to full strength. Bear in mind how short our season can be. Cheaper plants are also more likely to have been grown outside Scotland. The problem with this is that they may not be able to withstand the colder nights we have here. At Cardwell almost all the bedding we sell is grown by ourselves or by our partners in Scottish nurseries. Because we have this control over the propagation and growing, we know they are strong, healthy plants and we stand by that quality.
@westendlife
Always plant bedding in new compost and make sure there is appropriate drainage. Composts often come with fertiliser already added and some even have water retaining gel. The gel composts are ideal for containers and baskets and hold moisture in and around the roots. Once the added fertiliser has been used up, you must add your own. Liquid or soluble feeds that are high in potash are best for bedding plants as they will act faster and promote flower growth over foliage. Granular fertilisers are best added when planting, mixed through the compost. Please use the right fertiliser for the job and, despite what some TV shopping channels may say, there is not a fertiliser that is a ‘one stop’ solution for all round the garden. If you are unsure, your garden centre must have a trained assistant available to help you choose the right one. They are there to help and there are no wrong or daft questions - most casual gardeners need help with this, so don’t be embarrassed.
Watering with a can or hose will make sure the soil gets drenched. If your plants are in flower try and water directly into the soil, not over the plants. If you have to water over the plants then it is best to use a rose or spray attachment for the hose, just to reduce the force of the water on the plants. Be prepared for the odd plant to die. Bedding plants are young and fragile so they can get ‘shocked’ when first planted. This can happen with even the best quality plants, it is just natural that some will not make it. Predators, particularly slugs and snails, will do their best to eat your beautiful plants as well. Finally, do not ignore your lawn. It is probably the largest planted area in your garden and will almost certainly take the most abuse. Feed it, kill any weeds or moss and trim it regularly. Watering the lawn will also have benefits and buying a lawn sprayer for the hose is a good investment. Whatever the next two months bring, please take the time to enjoy your garden.
Which compost you choose is up to you, there is plenty of choice and it is not expensive. Many of our customers take advantage of our cheap home delivery, bulk buying their compost and allowing our strong and healthy delivery driver to take the strain. Don’t worry, he can handle it. Most composts will still contain a high amount of peat. There should be details of how much peat they contain on the packaging, so if you want to use peat free compost make sure to check this. Peat free compost has come a long way recently, the manufacturers being forced to improve their recipes as our industry moves towards phasing out peat use completely. However, peat free compost still cannot match their peat based competitors for growing performance. By all means use peat free compost, but remember that in general peat free compost will not hold moisture as well or contain the nutrients found in peat itself. So you must water more frequently and add food as required. Watering bedding plants daily is best, even when it rains. Rainwater will often sit on the top of the soil, but not reaching the roots where it is needed. West End Life Magazine

To Let or Not to Let, that is the Question. in the event a Landlord requires to take formal steps to evict, the new procedure is cost effective and allows for matters to be determined as swiftly as possible. At McIntosh McCann Family & Civil Solicitors we have extensive experience in dealing with Private Tenancies. Law has recently changed in the private renting sector and there has been significant discussion in relation to the steps Landlords now require to take when seeking to recover property. The Scottish Government has created a new Private Residential Tenancy which came into force on the 1st December 2017. This imposes a number of Statutory Tenancy Conditions that must be within the body of any Private Residential Tenancy Agreement and provides Tenants with increased security on tenure. The change in the legislation removes the ability of the Landlord to evict on Notice and interestingly on the sale of a property the Landlord’s interest passes to the purchaser. In addition, following the death of a Tenant a bereaved partner may inherit the Tenancy where the Landlord was informed in advance they were residing at the address but not necessarily a “joint tenant”. In the event the Landlord requires to raise proceedings to recover property this can be done on 4 grounds and all applications are now made to the First Tier Tribunal Housing and Property Chamber. The Tribunal do not charge a fee for lodging the application which has been seen as a positive to a number of Landlords however there is no right to recover expenses or to ask the Tribunal to make a finding of Legal expenses against the Tenant. Although the Legislation extends the rights of Tenants

Major Success for West End Photography Studio The 2018 Scottish Portrait & Wedding Photographer Of The Year Award goes to....
Local photography studio, John Hendry Photography, have accomplished a major unprecedented achievement of winning both the Scottish Portrait Photographer of the Year and also the Scottish Wedding Photographer of the Year Awards in the same year.
John Hendry Photography picked up awards in multiple categories at this years gala ceremony. Winning awards in the contemporary portrait, complete wedding, monochrome, family portrait, reportage wedding and the Cherubs baby portrait categories. It was the accumulation of winning so many awards in so many categories that led to the studio being pronounced overall wedding and portrait photographer of the year with the Scottish region of the Master Photographers Association. “We were absolutely delighted when it was announced that the studio had won these awards. It was an incredible feeling. Thankfully I didn’t have to do a BAFTA or Oscar style thank you speech when I was presented with the trophies.” It was in their Turnberry Road studio that they created the fine art portrait of a ballet dancer and the delightful tender image of a father cuddling his precious new born baby.
We meet with our customers a little while before a portrait session or wedding to create a personalised brief, which ensures they get exactly what they are looking for in a style to suit their taste. “Most of our wedding couples are looking for a blend of photographic styles. They like a mixture of classical, for the important family groups, artistic, for the special ‘couple’ shots of themselves and reportage, to capture the magical atmosphere of the day. Our 25 years of experience allows us to confidently meet their needs. “
John went on to say, “We see it as a privilege to be asked to and be trusted to photograph a couples wedding day. Being the winner in the reportage category was particularly special as more and more couples are looking for a relaxed record of their day.” With reportage wedding photography you photograph the day as it happens. Once a moment has gone it’s gone. You cannot relive it. You have to get it right first time, every time. A bit like being in the final of Master Chef!

Ready for Summer? Victorian England’s modesty and decency laws dictated that women had to wear bathing garments made of heavy wool and these cumbersome clothes, as if not heavy enough were, quite unbelievably, weighted at the skirt hemline. Adding to the misery, women also had to wear leather shoes laced up to the knee - just to go for a swim at the beach! Needless to say - drowning was a pretty common occurrence. Over in America, restrictions on swimwear eased somewhat, however, ‘Patrolmen’ would quite literally patrol beaches armed with a measuring tape and could fine or even arrest women who exposed too much of their calf. Their calf! Thankfully, things have moved on and we now only need to choose wisely with regard to what swimwear actually suits us. When choosing flattering swimwear, every body is unique, it’s important to be honest with ourselves - most people have areas that we would rather not have on full show. If that’s the case then get creative, there are now so many styles of bathing suits and bikinis that finding one that ticks all, or nearly all the boxes shouldn’t be too difficult. If the tummy area is your weak spot then bold swimsuits with a reinforced tummy panel could be the answer, alternatively, supportive high waisted pants are another option. If you have a large bust, then opt for under wired support for the best look. You can create the illusion of longer legs by choosing swimwear that’s high cut and if you plan on doing some

actual swimming or beach sports when you are away then make sure you choose something more functional that can withstand the rigours of activity rather than something designed purely for sunbathing. Incidentally, sports inspired swimwear is one of the top trends for this summer, along with belted styles, feminine frills and bold floral prints. Perhaps the most important piece of beachwear clothing is the cover up. This multi functional item is a wonderful addition to your holiday wardrobe. Whether it’s a little lightweight, easy to wear dress, a sarong or an oversized scarf, the cover up really is invaluable. For the body conscious, a sarong is so versatile, tie it around your waist for a stylish way to camouflage your midriff, alternatively, tie it around your bust or neck for full body coverage. Some other uses include - a makeshift bag, as sun protection, a handy blanket or an emergency sling (hopefully never required, but good to be prepared)... The creative list goes on - just ask Google! Ultimately, as the saying goes: “the only thing you need for a beach body is a body” True words, so use swimwear to accentuate your strong points and downplay the parts you’d rather hide, then smile and enjoy your holiday - just be glad there’s no patrolmen!
Have a lovely Summer
