APR-MAY EDITION 2019

In This Edition...

I

’m looking out of the window today, and wondering if it is really coming up to Easter. Winter has been very mild, and now it’s cold, windy and wet. Is time running backwards? Or are we in Scotland and warm weather will be here tomorrow? It’s definitely the latter, so what are the highlights of the coming season that we should pencil into the diary? Well, there’s the food, drink and music Mhor Festival at Loch Voil, north of Callander, and of course the famous Drymen

Show, the country’s biggest one-day agricultural event (also including food, drink and music!). Keep Park Life Magazine to hand when you want information about local events and activities. You’ll find everything that Loch Lomond and the Trossachs has to offer, all within easy reach. Check out the full what’s on listings on page eighteen - you might find something to keep you busy every day till summer. Katrina, Lisa, Heather

Historical Show just keeps on going Drymen Show Saturday 25th May 2019

I

n 1816 the Drymen Show was conceived by the Strathendrick Agricultural Society, and it quickly grew into the premier rural family festival that continues today. The Society has been at the forefront in providing a focus for the local economy by showcasing the talents of this rural community in a very social, inclusive gathering. What’s more, it’s fun to take part and fun to attend! If you live anywhere in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, it is very likely to be a firm fixture in your diary. But of course, you don't have to live locally to enjoy the spirit of the Drymen Show. Visitors flock from far and wide, and sometimes just detour from the West Highland Way, to join the fun. Expect to meet around 8000 show visitors, making this one of Scotland’s biggest one-day rural events. There are serious and entertaining animal competitions and shows, involving highland ponies, Clydesdale horses, cattle, sheep, even pets. Kids of all ages can enjoy the funfair, fancy dress horses and riders, helicopter rides, classes and competitions (including the Drymen Show Bake Off!). Everyone has a camera these days, so don’t miss the opportunity to take some pictures and send them to the Drymen Show Facebook page. And when you need to be fed, refreshed and rested, there is food and drink, with live music around the showground providing the background. In Drymen, you are never more than 20 yards from a piper! Of course, at its heart, it is an agricultural show, and the rural trades exhibiting are open to all, from the farmer considering investing in new farm equipment, to the wide-eyed child marvelling at the complexity of it! Vintage tractors are on show close by their somewhat shinier, if less romantic, modern equivalents. In the Learning Zone you’ll have an opportunity to hear from the experts and practitioners about living the rural, agricultural and farming life, whether as a farmer, vet, agricultural engineer or any other. Make sure you tour the trade and craft stands, and take away with you some of the produce and products that the best rural producers put in front of you. Most of all, meet people, have fun, and put next year in your diary too! www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Great service! Jim fixed my bike whilst I waited, and the price was more than reasonable, highly recommended. Thanks Jim, see you again, and best of luck with your business. John

Excellent service at a reasonable price. I took my sons bike to Jim to be fixed, after seeing two other bike repair people who couldn’t help. Jim not only fixed the bike but saw other problems for repair and made the bike look brand new again all in less than 7 days. I would highly recommend him. Elspeth

EXPERIENCE THE E-BIKE SMILE

E

lectric bikes or e-bikes are the latest innovation and fastest growing trend in the cycling market. After trying one, most participants come back grinning from ear to ear, with what has become known as the “e-bike” smile.

e-bikes as opposed to 7% for non-electric bikes. Loch Lomond and Trossachs Countryside Trust, the organisation that coordinates Walk in the Park will be running TRED (Trossachs E-bike Demonstration project) a local project working along the National Cycle Network route 7 (NCN7). In the first phase the project will provide a loan of e-bikes to individuals and local communities so that they can experience their own e-bike smile and realise the possibilities that an e-bike opens up. The communities of Drymen, Gartmore, Aberfoyle, Callander and Strathyre all lie along the route of NCN7 and will be the focus for the initial demonstration phase of the project. In particular we will be looking to engage with individuals who make regular short local journeys and would be interested in trying an e-bike for these journeys. The motivation may be to replace a car journey, get fitter, connect to public transport or make a journey where no public transport exits, basically local journeys up to 10-15 miles that can be made by ebike.

The bikes ride like a normal bike but have variable power assistance that works when the rider is pedalling. This means that cycling uphill once again becomes a pleasure, longer distances can be achieved and you don’t need to get hot and sweaty to get anywhere. In the National Park our gradients and distances between villages and services such as doctors, post offices etc are above the norm and hence an innovative e-bike system is proposed to help more people choose active travel and take control of their own personal mobility. In other areas after trying ebikes, the shift in the way people travel short distances has been shown to be 17% for

Comments from those trying an e-bike include “Best experience I’ve had since being a child it’s like I just started cycling for the first time, very enjoyable, it’s awesome” to “I’d recommend one to someone like my mum, to help get her out on a bike. My dad cycles a lot, and they could cycle together if she had one of these as she could keep up with him” So if you would like to find out more about the project or arrange a loan of one of our e-bikes visit our website or facebook page or contact project officer Jim Riach. www.trustinthepark.org www.facebook.com/trustinthepark/ jim.riach@lochlomond-trossachs.org www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Spring Recipe By Nick Nairn

6 Hour Shoulder of Lamb with Rosemary, Garlic, Anchovy & Capers

P

reheat the oven to 220°C/ Fan 200°C Pull the needles off 2 branches of the rosemary and peel the garlic cloves. If the cloves are particularly large, cut each half into quarters or chop up a bit. Unroll the meat skin-side down on a clean work surface exposing the boned-out meaty side. Cut out any large pieces of excess fat. Scatter as much rosemary over this as you like then throw the garlic on top. Next place the anchovies randomly over the rosemary and garlic, followed by a scattering of caper. Season with plenty of ground black pepper, but no salt as the anchovies and capers should both contain enough salt for the job. If you’ve decided not to use the anchovies and capers (shame!) then you WILL have to season with salt. Next, roll the meat up like a Swiss roll from the shorter side, and using fine cooking string/twine tie up fairly tightly, starting in the middle and working towards each end to give a nice tidy joint.

Place the joint in a roasting tray, drizzle with olive oil, season well and bung in the oven to sear for 15 minutes, then turn the temperature right down to 140°C/Fan 120°C. Remove the tray from the oven and place the carrot, onion and celery around the meat and tuck in the remaining rosemary branch, then pour the wine over the top of the meat. Cover loosely with kitchen foil, but making sure the edges are sealed around the tin and return to the oven to slow-roast for 5 - 6 hours, basting every 30 minutes or so, the re-sealing again. Basting frequently helps to keep the meat moist and encourages the build up of a good glaze on the outside. When finished cooking the lamb will be thoroughly cooked through, meltingly tender, and not pink at all. The garlic will be as soft as butter and the anchovy just melts into the meat, disappearing completely but acting as a seasoning with the capers. If you use a digital thermometer you can check the core temperature of the meat each time you baste it

and when it reads 90°C it is done. If not using this handy gadget, then stick to the cooking time given then remove the joint from the oven, transfer to a warm carving dish or board, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest in a warm place for 30-45 minutes before carving. Strain the pan juices into a jug and skim off any fat or oil that rises. Taste the juices and if you like a more concentrated jus or gravy, then pour into a pan and boil hard to reduce until it tastes right to you. Keep warm. Once the joint has rested, remove the string and carve into generous slices and serve with good old baked potatoes, roasties or mash or for a treat, a creamy gratin dauphinoise. This is one of those dishes that is perfect paired with a medley of olive oil-roasted Mediterranean vegetables – peppers, courgettes, aubergines and red onions. Failing that, a stir-fry of purple sprouting broccoli, garlic and chilli is one of my favourites.

Serves 6. Ingredients • 1.8 kg boned shoulder of lamb • 2-3 large branches of rosemary, washed • 4 large garlic cloves, halved lengthways • 8 anchovy fillets (optional but make all the difference) • 8-12 small salted capers, rinsed well (optional) • Olive oil • 3 medium carrots, peeled and halved • 1 red onion, peeled and quartered • 3 celery sticks, washed • 180ml red wine • Freshly ground black pepper

Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k is green for go!

O

rganisers of Balfron’s annual running event have set themselves an ambitious target - to turn their popular village race into Scotland’s greenest 10k. Inspired by races all around the world which are reducing their environmental impact, the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k is taking an ecofriendly approach to this year’s race on Sunday, May 12.

“This clearly can’t continue, so everyone has to do their bit to cut down on waste. As well as being a fantastic family event, the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k will try to address in our own modest way the key issues facing our planet.’’ Proceeds from the 2019 event will continue to benefit the two Balfron schools, with Balfron’s Pathways group being this year’s nominated charity beneficiary. The group which maintains and develops the village path network is keen to continue its upgrade of the White Yett Glen pathway.

Saying goodbye to mountains of plastic bottles, metal medals, advertising flyers and carrier bags, race organisers hope their Pictured back are MBM Balfron10k focus on waste reduction, sustainability committee members Julie Ross, Ben and recycling, will provide a blueprint Mathieson and Olivia Spencer, with for other events to copy. front, Alexander and Olivia Mathieson “We are following the lead of large running events, many of which are reassessing their policies on plastic waste and recycling, explained a Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k race spokesman.

and Laurie and Lily-Belle Mohaupt

“Ours is tiny by comparison – only 600 participants instead of thousands - but we have the same ambition to reduce waste, increase recycling and explore other, less impactful ways of putting on an event.’’ Among the green initiatives being trialled at the 2019 event will be replacing plastic water bottles with biodegradable cups, sourcing medals from sustainably-minded suppliers, and ditching plastic carrier bags. With support from Scottish Water, runners will be offered water from bowsers on the route and at the finish, and a refillable water bottle.

In future the goal of the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k will be to have as little impact on the environment as possible.

Now in its 13th year, the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k has raised more than £70k for the village’s primary and high schools and nominated charities since it began. With a reputation as a tough but rewarding test thanks to its undulating route along scenic country roads overlooked by the Campsie Hills, the event attracts club runners, locals, first-time 10k-ers and veterans who return time and again to experience its community spirit.

“In 2017, UK households binned an estimated 235 million items of clothing waste, which went straight to landfill while the UK as a whole shipped thousands of tonnes of plastic waste to landfill sites at home and across the world,” continued the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k spokesman

Entries for the 2019 event are now open, visit www.balfron10k.org.uk

Runners are also being encouraged to car share to minimise air pollution in the village.

Creating Community Through Rhythm

A

new, playful, joyful group has started making some noise in the Drymen Village Hall.

This is the Drymen Community Drum Circle, where all are invited to come and join in an hour of improvising on small percussion and drums. Through an hour of play, we create a rhythmical community, united by the music we play. You can be any age (our youngest participant is 18 months old and our oldest is 80 years old) and all levels of ability are welcome. Instruments are provided, but if you’d like to, you can bring your own. A lot of local people were very generous in donating instruments to the Circle, and we now have floor toms and dunduns, djembes and darbukas, bongos and frame drums and loads of small percussion. We also use boom

whackers and might even do a bit of body percussion or singing. Each Circle is different and what happens in the Circle depends on what people bring to it. I trained with Village Music Circles and am a member of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild, and my role as the Drum Circle Facilitator is to enable the group to find its collective voice, sometimes through a little bit of direction, sometimes through some conducting, but often it is a free-flowing experience, where I only step in if things get a little shaky.

" Nadja Ray

When I’m in a Drum Circle it makes my heart sing. Every time is different and every time I am so excited to be part of this creative process.

"

We meet in the Drymen Village Hall, every first and third Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at 10.30am. I normally ask for a small contribution, just to cover the cost of the hall hire. The Saturday Drum Circle is particularly family friendly (these fabulous photographs by Kore Photography were taken at our last Saturday morning Drum Circle) and the Thursday Drum Circle tends to attract more adults. And anyone is welcome to either Circle. All you need to bring is curiosity and a willingness to be open to what might happen. The Drum Circle is about encouraging you to find your musical voice, to find the rhythm that has been waiting inside you, all along, and to share it in a safe environment. And, hopefully, by the end of the session, you will feel a tremendous sense of wellbeing and have experienced connection and a sense of community. It’s great fun, it’s an opportunity to express yourself and it’s a great stress reliever. Please come, you are so welcome. One….Two….Let’s all play.

A huge thank you from the Strathendrick Local Committee

S

trathendrick Local Committee regret that the decision has been taken to disband. During its 25 years in existence, the Committee has raised over £300,000 thanks to the very generous support from all the local communities. Recently some committee members have retired, for a variety of reasons, and the three remaining members had hoped to encourage other people to join them - but that recruitment drive has been unsuccessful. The committee's well established House to House Collection and the annual Ladies' Lunch will not take place, although the Buchlyvie Band Night will happen in 2019 and is scheduled for 4th May. A huge thank you to all Committee members, past and present, all House to House Collectors and to all the people who have donated. Of course, we would encourage you to continue to donate or hold fund raising events despite the absence of a local committee. You can go online to cancerresearchuk.org or telephone 08701 60 20 40 to continue to support research into cancer.

Bringing Bees & Butterflies By Holly Nairn into your garden

“passionate about plants”

S

pring is here and your garden should be buzzing! As gardeners we should be doing all we can to help feed our beneficial, pollinating insects. Attract them into your garden by... • Planting herbs - All insects love fragrant herbs and there’s nothing better than picking them straight from the garden to use in the kitchen. Thyme, sage, lavender and rosemary, which come from the Mediterranean, prefer a very well-drained soil in full sun – if you grow them in pure grit you will have more success than in our clay soils. Don’t feed them, you want strong growth and good flavours. Parsley, coriander, rocket and fennel can take a bit of moisture and do just fine in a clay loam. When they flower, watch the insects flock to them while chewing on a rocket flower (sweeter than the leaves but with a mild peppery kick!)

“Let’s start planning now for the garden you’ve always wanted.”

• Sowing easy-to-grow annual flowers such as cosmos, poppies, sunflowers, marigolds and cornflowers, - all make wonderful cut flowers and the more you pick, the more you get. Sown in your veggie patch, they will attract the insects you need to pollinate your crops. • Go for single varieties of roses and flowers, rather than doubles or multi-petalled flowers which are sterile. • Plant perennials with daisy shaped flowers, which are easy for insects to land on and feed from. • Go for ground cover and prevent weed growth Limnanthes douglasii, the poached egg plant, is a great annual ground cover plant and is super easy to grow. The sunshiney flowers attract hoverflies, whose larvae eat aphids and will save you having to look to pesticides. It self seeds so you’ll never be without it. Ajuga, commonly known as bugle, is great for bees and has many varieties with attractive foliage. To book a personal consultation for garden advice or design visit www.hollynairn.com

Eight Wee Hills with Big Views

Park Life | Business

You don’t have to be an experienced hill walker to enjoy Scotland’s most spectacular views. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park boasts a range of ‘Wee Hills with Big Views’ that can be enjoyed by people of all levels of fitness and experience.

Ben A’an

In the Trossachs, the 4km walk up this lovely peak offers a surprisingly big experience with many of the ingredients of a mountain hike such as an atmospheric forest, open moorlands, views of crags and a superb vista of the surrounding landscape at the top.

Gouk Hill

On the east of Helensburgh, Gouk hill is 277m high and forms part of the long distance coast-to-coast walk, the John Muir Way.landscape at the top.

Take a walk on the wild side...

Glen Striddle hills

58 50 |

These hills offer a fine hike from the village of Luss and to the highest point, Beinn Dubh at 657m. You could choose to simply walk out and back on the same route, or complete a 12km horseshoe circuit taking in another hilltop, Mid Hill at 623m.

Ben Gullipen

Starting from Callander, this is a 414m hike up a wellestablished path. The reward is breath-taking views of the Wallace Monument near Stirling, Loch Venachar, Ben Venue and Ben Ledi, as well as the Munros Stuc a’Chroin and Ben Vorlich, and the Menteith Hills.

Callander Crags

If you’re looking for something a little less challenging, these crags offer a very pleasant walk through beautiful woodlands, over the crag tops and to a cairn at 343m. Many people also take in a visit to the stunning Bracklinn Falls.

Dundurn

In the north of the National Park, Dundurn is a rocky knoll only 112m high where a Pictish Fort once sat. Filled with local history, en-route to the top you can visit a burial ground and the remains of St. Fillan’s Chapel, dating back to the 1300s.

Conic Hill

A short but fairly stiff 361m climb beginning in Balmaha, Conic Hill offers magnificent views of Loch Lomond. It comes with the added bragging bonus of being able to say you’ve walked part of the West Highland Way, one of Scotland’s most famous trails.

www.parklifescotland.co.uk www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Inchcailloch island

If you fancy a boat trip, cross over from Balmaha to the enchanting Inchcailloch island, and then follow the easy-going way-marked trail up to the island’s highest point (85m). Enjoy a panoramic view of the peaks of many mountains.

GARDEN TIPS for SPRING Spring is a busy time for gardeners. Get it right now and you'll be all set for the best summer yet. Here are five top tips from our gardening experts for the season ahead.

1. Get on top of your perennials

Spring is a good time to freshen up the soil and apply a little mulch to feed the soil and the plants. As you work through the border there’s still time to do a little dividing of perennials. Lift them, divide the crown and re place the plant in a smaller group or elsewhere, discarding the central part of the crown. Some of the perennial plants in your borders will be emerging and noticeable above ground and you can navigate through the border without fear of trampling the crowns of the plants.

2. Get ready for a great lawn

Now’s the time to get the lawn mower out of the shed and give the grass the first cut of the season. Mowers work best if well serviced and sharp. Blades need to be sharpened and balanced and its best to get this done at a garden machinery outlet. If the blades are sharpened at the start of the season then the grass will remain in better condition. The cleaner the cut, the less bruising on the grass and the nicer the appearance and better the health is in your lawn. Start with the mower set at a much higher level than you would ultimately like. Give your lawn a few cuts at this grade to give the grass blades the best chance of health, strength and rigidity for the season ahead.

Don’t mow your lawn to within an inch of its life. This only helps help weed seeds to penetrate through the short blades and reach bare soil for germination.Leaving your grass a little longer will actually help to catch the seed, and be eradicated with the next pass of the mower.

4. Pay attention to spring bulbs

Now is a great time to lift and divide bulbs which have finished flowering. Take off any faded flowers and seedheads and tease out the bulbs and their leaves and replant them individually about 60-75mm apart.

3. Get planting now

There’s still time to plant bare rooted plants, like top fruit, soft fruit, roses or any trees or shrubs, although aim to have it all done by St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th). Containerised stock and bare rooted evergreens can still be planted out, but mulch them. The weather often turns windy and dry between March and May. Carry on planting perennials and any Lily, Gladioli and Fritillaria bulbs.

5. Don't forget your vegetables

This is a busy time for the vegetable growers. Many of your main crops to be raised from seed can be started in a gently-heated propagator if the ground is still too cold outside. But remember, as soon as the seed is up, lift them into a cooler, but well-lit place to stop them becoming spindly and weak. The seedlings will need turning, ideally a quarter turn a day to stop them developing one-sided.

Your first choice for lawn care 2018 was a difficult year for your garden. Extreme weather conditions resulted in lawns that didn’t look their best. As we move towards the growing season, now is the time to start preparing your lawn to get the most from it. Our seasonal treatments start from just £15*.

If you think your lawn is beyond repair due to last year’s sweltering summer, ask us about our Lawn Makeover - the best way to get ‘The GreenThumb lawn.’

Due to high demand, and to avoid disappointment, we advise that you book your treatments early.

For your FREE lawn analysis & no-obligation quote, contact your local branch today.

Simply call 08000 111 222 or visit www.greenthumb.co.uk *Based on a lawn size up to 40m2 www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Park Life’s DIY quick fix guide Coffee in your scratched table?

Repair scratches in your table tops by making a thick paste with soluble coffee and some water. Rub this mixture into the striations or dents until they are filled. You may need to do this several times – before varnishing. You can also use shoe polish instead of coffee, which has the added benefit of being available in various colours.

Tee’d off with unsightly screw holes? Wedge a golf tee in the offending screw hole, then cut off the protruding section with a hack saw. File and sand down to finish.

Squeaky Door Hinges

All types of painting& decorating work undertaken blainpainters@outlook.com www.blainpainters.com

Apply talcum powder to quieten that noisy hinge. Edible oils such as vegetable or olive oil can also be used – best applied with rag or tissue. Extra tip: talcum powder can also be used on squeaky floorboards.

Annoying dripping tap quick fix Cut a piece of dental floss and wrap one end around the dripping faucet, then lay the rest into the drain. The drips will adhere to the floss and you'll be able to get some peace and quiet until a more permanent repair can be made.
