Lettter from a reader My main reason for writing today is to thank you so much for reassuring me about paying to a ‘website’ for my ParkLife deal. Loathe to admit it in this ‘internet’ age but I do still worry about paying over the net, so after speaking to you and knowing you were up the road and that I could call or pop in if needed took all the concern away that is there with some of the bigger promotion companies on the net. I don’t usually buy these kind of deals, but was attracted because 99% of the offers that have come through are local ones and it’s nice to ‘go local’ where possible. I know all the places that you are promoting because they are close by which is great. I don’t like being inundated with promotions every day so I look forward to your weekly deal on a Friday now - although still hoping you might do something every Tuesday too. Now that I know you (and thanks to Jen even understand how to work the website!) I might even try the occasional city deal you put on when it comes through. I know it must be hard for you to get businesses on board but as a customer I think these deals are a brilliant way for them to thank their regular customers - but also to find new ones. I know I have gone to a few places I would never have tried and have now gone back because I liked it.

Interview with...
Cathy Morrison
From Glendrick Roost Animal Welfare Centre When was Glendrick Roost Animal Welfare Centre established? “Glendrick Roost is a small selffunded charity set up in 2003 by myself, my mum Mione and a small group of dedicated volunteers. We rescue abused, abandoned and unwanted animals from gerbils to Clydesdale horses and give them a home for life at our sanctuary, with a focus on special needs cases, such as our blind Labrador and 3 legged greyhound which are qualified Therapy pets. We use these animals’ stories for educational purposes, taking a display and selection of our animals to events, groups and communities around the country… the ultimate goal being to provide an educational visitor centre where community groups and families can interact with our full range of animals. These visits not only raise awareness of animal welfare issues but also bring in our funding through donations…we receive no funding from government bodies.
What kind of cases do you deal with? After the loss of our premises a few years ago, we have been struggling to keep afloat as the animals have been spread far and wide in temporary accommodation, forcing us to spend a huge chunk of our time travelling between locations to care for our rescues and limiting opportunities for fundraising. This not only means we cannot provide the quality of care to our animals that we would like, but also means we cannot yet provide activities and opportunities at our centre for local 8 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk groups. We have at last secured
permanent premises near Aberfoyle where we are setting up the visitor centre and activity venue, allowing local people and groups to visit our animals, learn about or participate in their care and try out new activities. This visitor centre provides a great opportunity for local businesses and individuals to get involved by sponsoring a structure…whether it’s a shed for our wee furries, a length of artificial grass for a pathway, a portocabin for our reptile house, a fence around a paddock or a barn for the horses…every donation will be acknowledged with a plaque on the structure and business advertising on our ‘local good guys’ board so everyone’s a winner!
These two dogs are Ben the chihuahua who was rescued from a tiny cage on a puppy farm, tyke the yorkie was rescued with a smashed pelvis after being hit by a car... no owner could be found so the police asked us to take him.
Two young volunteers!
We also need help with fundraising, either by helping to man our stall at events round the country, or by helping us come up with new fundraising options, or by sponsoring an animal on a monthly basis, or by doing your own fundraiser for us, whether it’s a bake sale at your school, making things to sell to raise funds, doing a sponsored silence/ skydive etc etc…you can be as creative as you want and every penny really does help! We would also be grateful for any help in developing our site…we urgently need sheds/ barns to accommodate the rest of our animals, a reception/office/ activity building, funds and materials (fence posts, planks, woodchips, artificial grass/ground mesh etc) to build fences, paths etc, as well as assistance with getting mains water supplied to the site…the list goes on! Our vision is very much rustic and natural…we do not need fancy, luxury materials or buildings, just functional basic shelters for animal residents and human visitors, but we can’t do it without YOU! If you are interested in helping in any way at all or would like to know more, please call 07827911006 or email mumcat78@gmail.com Thank you!
Can local people help you? To be able to provide this facility for local communities, we need your involvement and input, and there are countless ways you can help! We are in urgent need of new animal care volunteers who could give a bit of time on a regular basis to help care for our rescued animals.
These cows were rescued from slaughter.

Mulberry Business Advertising Bush Montessori Balfron 10K Runners Head For The Hills The race is an important fund-raiser for the two schools with Balfron High using cash from previous years to buy lacrosse and gymnastics equipment as well as football and basketball strips. The youngsters aren’t left out of the event either with tots to teens taking part in nursery races, fun runs and the hotly-contested Balfron 4k road race - which are open to pupils of Balfron Primary and High Schools.
It will be a case of heaven and hill for hundreds of runners as they tackle the annual Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k next month. The spectacular Campsie Hills will prove a welcome distraction for the competitors tackling the challenging route when the popular race gets under way on Sunday, April 27 at 11am. A record number of runners, keen to get into the spirit of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, have already signed up for the annual fund-raising race. The Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k, regularly voted the number one 10k in Scotland by the readers of a national running magazine, is now in its 8th year and so far raised a bumper £50,000, with the funds being split between Balfron Primary School, Balfron High School and a nominated charity. This year Cancer Research UK will be a major beneficiary.
10 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk
Attracting more than 600 entrants from all over Scotland and beyond, organisers say the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k is becoming more popular year by year. The event is a real community affair with locals not only running in it but also helping with organisation, marshalling, photography and the all-important cheering on of competitors. Race director Colin Mendham said: “Each year the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k gets bigger and better and 2014 is already shaping up to be our busiest yet. The response to the race has been fantastic with entries coming in thick and fast. “With the sporting spotlight this summer very much on Glasgow as it
hosts the Commonwealth or ‘friendly’ Games, it is fantastic to be able to host our very own friendly 10k where runners are guaranteed to have great day out.’’ Mairi Clark, of the Mulberry Bush Montessori, said: “I am once again thrilled to be the main sponsor of the MBM Balfron 10k. As well as being a really important fund-raiser for local schools, it continues to encourage more and more children and adults from the immediate community and villages around us, to run and take part and be more fit, focused and fun!” The race, which starts at Balfron Campus, follows a scenic out and back route. A chip timing device ensures a quick and accurate result for runners. Enter online now and check out the website at www.balfron10k.org.uk

The skies are blue, spring is in the air and The Inn at Kippen is under new management and it’s all good. Walking in the front door you are welcomed by the sight of cake and are tempted inside by the specials board. The menu is varied and appealing to all tastes, a variety of options suitable for all with fresh and wholesome sharing boards which spoil you.
We chose The Inn’s sharing board, stunned by the variety of choice from beef, smoked salmon, cheese, chicken liver parfait, pickles, chutney, salad and more. Add a glass or two of something chilled and you can sit, nibble and relax.

For our next course I selected the venison grill and can honestly say it was the best I have ever had. The venison melted in my mouth, delicious. My companion opted for the curried squash with aromatic rice, Amazing! The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, there when you need them (I loved the recommended wine, perfect for the venison) but never rushing you, so relaxing. Fintry Sports Club Managed by Brenda Ross & Team
An ideal venue for those indulging in the various sports activities at the club. Strathendrick Rugby, indoor bowling centre and squash club provide a very ready clientele, who can have a range of food, such as, good quality soups - omelettes - baguettes with an excellent range of fillings and various paninis to order. (Summer menu available soon!) On Friday evenings Brenda puts on a steak dinner night which is well patronised, and starting at 8oz steaks for £13.50 is great value. Service is very good, with the impression that nothing is too much trouble (small & large parties can also be catered for). The food we had was fresh, obviously homemade, and served with a smile. When I’m not running courses or developing recipes for my ‘Cookery Course in a box’ I love to bake for the family but I’m always looking for ways to make recipes healthier. This is one of the most popular in our house, and I’ve tweaked the original recipe to use wholemeal flour and substitute some of the butter for yoghurt. If you’ve never tried the combination of chocolate and beetroot before you are in for a treat, it’s rich and moist and keeps well for a few days, if there is any left that is! Ingredients 500g whole raw beetroot • 50g butter 200g plain chocolate • 250g caster sugar 3 eggs • 50g low fat natural yoghurt 100g plain flour • 25g cocoa powder Method 1. Peel and chop the raw beetroot and put into a large bowl. Add a couple of tablespoons of water and cover with cling film. Microwave on a high heat for 12 minutes. 2. Whilst the beetroot cooks heat the oven to 180c. Line a 20cmx30cm tin with baking parchment. Cube the butter and roughly chop the chocolate. 3. the beetroot and add the chocolate and butter. | www.parklifescotland.co.uk 30Drain
Put into a food processor or blender and blitz until you get a puree as smooth as you can manage. 4. Beat the eggs and sugar with an electric hand mix until thick and foamy, this usually takes about two minutes. Using a large metal spoon fold the beetroot puree and the natural yogurt into the egg mixture followed by the flour and sifted cocoa powder, working gently to conserve as much air as possible. 5. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for 25 to 30 mins until risen and with just a little quiver in the centre of the cake. Cool completely in the tin before cutting. Handmade in Stirling Business Advertising David Mackay runs Mackay’s Flooring Services, but his other passion apart from floors is the furniture that sits on top of them. David’s furniture is handmade in his home workshop in the heart of Scotland, Stirling. The materials that he sources all come from local woods and quarries in the central belt, ensuring a low carbon footprint and giving greater meaning to the stamp of “Hand Made in Scotland”. He often has to go by bike or on foot to old quarries and forgotten woods where there is no road access, which shows his love and dedication to finding the perfect materials. The sustainable materials he uses are storm damage wood like yew or beech, reclaimed wood such as oak and elm or reclaimed vintage items, which are then married with schist stone or wooden table tops, giving a natural look with a rustic edge.
a uniqueness of its own. The design of the furniture starts with David looking at his natural materials, and using his imagination to decide how he will create each item. David can also create a range of bespoke furniture to meet your requirements. All his pieces are handmade made with great care and attention and the wood is finished with natural ecofriendly wood oil, therefore suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Letting and Estate Agents
Selling your home?
In 25 years as an estate agent there are some things that just keep recurring! I wish I had the proverbial pound for every time someone has said to me ‘I just know my house will sell quickly’. Really! There’s nothing original about this often misguided expectation. In fact, I sometimes know that I’m going to hear it even before the person saying it has uttered it, and so you see, there really is very little that has changed! At least, not in people’s minds. But, selling your home has changed. And quite a lot. We now have Home Reports, the internet, greater social mobility, a different economy, greater
competition, greater choice and greater aspirations. We now have greater access to information and we now have have a plethora of house selling options.
But, if you’re thinking of selling your home and want to cut through all of this and maximise your prospects there are still 3 golden rules. 1. Prepare and present your home to the highest possible standard. 2. First impressions matter and with so many choices buyers will always favour the one that is well maintained and looks best. 3. Chose an experienced estate agent who will market it properly and who
you have confidence in.
4. The internet is your shop window. Make sure it’s going on the preeminent web sites and that your agent has an eye for attention to detail and takes quality photographs. 5. Be realistic about its true value. 6. Everyone wants the highest price. Price too high and you’ll kill your sale stone dead and lose impetus. Be guided by your Home Report valuation and your agent. I expect I’ll still be giving the same advice in the years ahead. What goes around comes around! Martin Turner Director Property Bureau Follow us on

Interview with...
Paul Saunders Photographer
Drymen based Paul Saunders came to Scotland 10 years ago to run the programming on Radio Clyde. Soon after moving to Drymen he saw the potential to start his own business, which he did in 2010.
What made you want to start your own business? I’d loved working in radio, but had always wanted to work as a photographer. Launching my own business has meant that I’ve been able to combine both media with photography.
52 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk
You’ve got a varied job, what do you enjoy the most? What brought you to Drymen? When my daughter was born 6 years ago my wife and I decided that a top floor tenement flat wasn’t the most practical. We had enjoyed coming out to Loch Lomond at weekends and have loved living here.
Have you got much business locally? I’ve had the pleasure to photograph many Parklife readers. There’s also
I get asked that a lot, it’s a tough question, family and wedding photography is great fun and often quite emotional. You’re in demand too for photography training. I make my ‘Take Better Photographs’ easy to understand. People are amazed at how easy it is to learn how to take control of their camera; they love it that they can see better results straight away. Currently I am filming a DVD of the course, which will be available in the next few weeks.

Oona McFarlane From Tir na nOg
Oona McFarlane owns and runs Tir na nOg Holistic Centre, where visitors can experience a great range of healing and relaxing therapies, a busy calendar of courses and events, a shop full of unusual and interesting gifts, and beautiful grounds to walk through.
We were so saddened to hear about the fire at Tir na nOg, how did it start? Thank you. It was obviously a huge shock for all of us to see the building on fire like that, and we were so sad when we realised the extent of the damage. It seems that an electrical
helped keep us motivated and inspired through the whole process of rebuilding. And on a lighter note, it was time to redecorate! We have tried to make the most of the time that we haven’t been open as normal to do lots of work behind the scenes so that the new-look Tir na nOg will be better than ever before, with a fresh layout in the shop, more availability for therapies, fun plans for the outdoor spaces, and new businesses joining us here in our lovely courtyard.

Every cloud has a silver lining, what are your plans for 2014? Yes, there is always an up-side, even in a disaster! For me, the biggest gift in this particular calamity was the wonderful support from our lovely customers, who literally overwhelmed us with kind messages and offers of help - it has really
How will you celebrate your re-opening? We think it deserves a whole weekend of celebration, so we will be having an Opening Weekend on the 19th & 20th of April, with special offers in the shop and on therapies, and lots going on throughout the centre and grounds, for adults and children. Probably followed by a little glass of champagne after all this hard work!

Collector’s Daughter The Untold Burrell Story This fascinating piece of social history has quite a lot of local connections. The story of Sir William Burrell’s daughter Marion is told by her god-daughter, Sue Stephen who has lived for nearly forty years in Stirlingshire at Balfron.
When Burrell endowed his famous collection to the City of Glasgow in 1944 it was doomed to remain under wraps for four long decades before a suitable site could be found to house almost 8,000 precious items which were waiting for a home. Before the Clean Air Act came into being pollution was a major problem and the medieval tapestries and embroideries were especially at risk. Due to this worry the collector was anxious to find a site north of Glasgow where the atmosphere would be free of industrial smoke, and so the countryside surrounding Killearn was the area that he chose. Because a baronial setting was favoured, Mugdock Castle was considered as well as the castles of Buchanan and Duntreath. Country estates were also contenders included Dougalston, w open inwhich Killearn, “Lumsdaine Halls Therapy Finnich Malise, Whiteflat oms”Carbeth, offers Balfunning, exceptional therapy services on and Ballindalloch, whereyou Suelocal Stephen lived fortothirty years.of ur doorstep, giving access a range As the years passed, Burrell’s ever increasing Collection ependent therapeutic specialists. Marion Burrell often visited Balfron when she came to stay at Ballindalloch and the geans (wild cherry trees) which blossom each spring on the avenue were planted there as a generous gift from the Collector’s daughter. Collector’s Daughter The Untold Story is now available to buy from Balfron Library with all profits going to the RNLI.

Park Life Spring Gardening Tips Spring has sprung and for those of you just itching to get outdoors and tidy after winter, here are some tips to help you make the most of your garden. Get your hands dirty!
Whether you’re a keen gardener or a complete novice, all gardens need a good tidy up after the winter months. Tackle any young weeds that are starting to appear as the weather gets warmer, and mulch with compost or manure.
Start Planting
FORTH VALLEY
TREE SERVICES • Qualified & fully insured • Tree felling, pruning, stump removal • Hedges cut / reduced • Domestic & commercial • Free quotations
If you didn’t get round to planting the shrubs and trees you wanted to during autumn ( Like me!), the ground should now be free from ground frosts for you to do so now. Spring is the perfect time to get plants, trees and shrubs fully established before winter comes around again. (See pg 68 Benview Nursery for plants)
Cut the grass
It’s time to dust off the mower and give the grass a regular mow, weed and feed. (See pg 68 Fraser Robb to get your mower serviced)
Sow summer plants
Sow summer bedding plants like marigolds and busy lizzies indoors in early spring. These can be moved outdoors in late spring/early summer once the weather warms up and there’s little chance of frost damage.
Top tip:
When planting bulbs, always wrap each one in a thin layer of steel wool to keep them safe from animals that like to dig!
