When someone in the family has a hearing loss the whole family has a hearing problem.
– Dr Mark Ross PHD If that someone is you... • It might just be that other family members get a bit irritated with you at having to repeat themselves.
• It could be that they miss sharing things with you, like a joke or a favourite TV programme.
• Or it could be that they’re worried about how withdrawn from them you have become
At Clements Hearing Services we have helped thousands of people with hearing loss and their families. We’ve been helping them since since 1996, and we can help you too using the most up to date hearing aid technology. The most important thing to us is to give you good service. Summer time... ...
By Jo Simms
and the reading is easy
One of the biggest luxuries we treat ourselves to during the summer holidays is time. Time to ourselves; the kind of time when you don’t have to keep an anxious eye on the clock. And if you enjoy filling some of that time with the time to enjoy a good book, here are some ideas to load up your kindle, iPad or even walk into a bookshop and buy. And remember there can never be enough time spent reading to your kids.
Jane Austen at Home
But he suffered a major breakdown and battled with crippling depression. This book shows the best and worst of humanity; with searing honesty and humour it is a personal insight into what it is to be a police officer today.
The Hanging Tree
Ben Aaronovitch The sixth in the incredible PC Peter Grant series. Been out for a while but arrives in paperback this summer. Magic is real, so of course the Met has a division to police magical crimes, in these gritty tales set in modern London. This compelling series begins with Rivers of London. Start at the beginning and be spellbound.
Lucy Worsley One of the nation’s best-loved authors in the hands of one of our favourite historians, so what’s not to like? Lucy Worsley shows us a ‘behind the scenes’ in Austen’s home and life, examining the rooms and her possessions and the way home is used in her novels as a place of both pleasure and prison, revealing that Jane Austen was a passionate woman who fought for her freedom.

WHAT drink says summer better than Pimm’s? We were all brought up drinking gallons of fruit squash and diluting juice as kids so it only seems right and proper that as grown-ups we progress to our own, alcoholic, version. And, if James Pimm is to be believed this is good for you – that is because Victorians believed in alcoholic ‘tonics’. Mr Pimm owned an oyster bar in the City of London and began to sell this gin-based drink, a concoction of spirits, herbs and other liqueurs, to his customers. Legend says it was served in a small-sized tankard known as a ‘number one cup’. The drink became so popular that he soon began large scale production and sold it
around the city. Mr Pimm sold his business on and by the 1880s Pimm’s Oyster Houses were a franchise. A variety of different ‘number’ cups followed based on different spirits. For today’s market there is still the original number one; a vodka cup and a spicy winter cup to serve warm. The latest editions are a strawberry flavoured and also a blackberry and elderflower and a cider cup. But it is the original number one that everyone associates with summer. Traditionally it was served with the herb borage, a cooling, cucumber-like taste, but today mint and cucumber are used.
How to make perfect traditional Pimm’s • • • • • •
One part Pimm’s Three parts lemonade Borage, if available Mint, crushed to release its oils Slices of cucumber Slices of orange
• • •
Strawberries, sliced or quartered if you are feeling very modern Lots and lots of ice Serve in a tall glass or a dimple half-pint pot with a generous amount of ice.
The modern Pimm’s has strawberries but how about leaving the strawberries out and instead adding the merest dash of Pimm’s to your serving bowl of strawberries? (Not recommended where children, non-drinkers, or drivers are involved.) Do not make too far in advance or the lemonade goes flat and the soft fruit gets mushy; far better to chill jug, Pimm’s and lemonade and assemble as needed. Have far more ice and fruit prepared than you think you will need because one jug is never enough. And remember apple, pineapple, maraschino cherries, little paper parasols and sparklers should never be allowed anywhere near a glass of Pimm’s.

The event, co-hosted by Inverclyde Council and Riverside Inverclyde with the support of Event Scotland, will deliver a weekend of thrilling marine motorsport, with a fleet of P1 Panther race boats and around 30 jet skis on the water from 104pm. The 2-mile race course will be close-to-shore at Greenock’s Esplanade, making it ideal for spectators to catch all the race action. A kitchen and a bl
The new kitchen for Ronnie and Carol’s beautiful home at Inverkip Marina enjoyable projects for the team at Affordable Luxuries. Ronnie Ford, whose career began as a teacher in Gourock, is an artist of international renown, with his work especially popular in the Far East and featured in many leading contemporary art collections. When Ronnie and Carol, his wife, moved into their new home they decided to replace the bespoke handcrafted kitchen. ‘We prefer a more modern and functional space, full of light, so we decided to move on and contact the team at Affordable Luxuries. The kitchen was designed by David, who is also an ex-student of mine from Gourock High School with Tom project managing the entire installation. They really did design and install our ideal kitchen,’ said Ronnie. The brief for the Affordable Luxuries team was to design a modern contemporary kitchen dining space
along with the utility room which would provide practical storage solutions. Carol’s love of porcelain and cookery books meant that the kitchen design had to include plenty of storage space, while the overall look was to be one of openness and light which Ronnie and Carol could fill with their favourite pieces. They chose the Pronorm Y-Line range in gloss super white with glass wall panels in gloss super white with light grey wood. For the worktops Affordable Luxuries recommended the Consentino Silestone 30mm quartz range in Alumino Nube, for its aluminium/ silver tones with the most subtle mirror sparkle through it. The sink is a Blanco Andano oneand-a-half bowl in stainless steel, paired with a Blanco Menu rinse tap with a pull out hand spray.

As we approach the end of spring and reflect on the gardening weather of 2017,
it’s fair to say ‘so far, so good’. April and May saw some dry and warm weather, perfect for the gardener to motivate themselves and get the spade out. In truth, come mid May we were hoping for a wee bit of rain at Cardwell Garden Centre, for two reasons.
garden. Prolonged dry spells, albeit unlikely in the west of Scotland, cause a crust to form on the top of soil. By this point, a shower of rain will run off the soil rather than penetrate it, leaving the roots dry.
The garden is looking good just now, the warmer weather has brought the soil temperature up a few degrees and everything is coming to life nicely. However, many gardeners, you know who you are, still don’t water the plants enough. A warm, dry spell for a even a couple of weeks can dry out the soil and leave plants lacking. This is especially true of planted containers and hanging baskets, which dry out quicker.
Keep an eye on moisture content in your soil and water as required. Bedding plants will wither very quickly without water, so as soon as you see this water the plants liberally.
So a couple of days of rain now and again is a good thing for the
For flowering plants try and water directly into the soil, rather than over the open flowers. For pots that have completely dried out, submerge the conatiner in a bucket of tepid water for 15 minutes or so. Not the plants, just the pot. This will allow the compost to soak up water.
The second reason we want some rain at Cardwell is that it saves us an awful lot of time watering! Anyone who waters during the midge season will understand why this is a good thing! Lawns also need watering and while it is rarely so dry that your lawn will suffer drought damage, you will still notice a significant difference between a lawn that is watered and one that is not. Weeds will also be growing around the garden and can be treated either by physically removing the weed or by treating it with a weedkiller. Removing weeds by hand or hand tool is obviously the way to go if you want to avoid using chemicals, but be aware that the weed will more than likely grow By Kieran Gallagher, Cardwell Garden Centre

back from any section of root of that is not removed. If you are using chemicals then please make sure you use the correct treatment for the problem. Using a path weedkiller on a lawn or vice versa will cause more harm than good. Equally old chemicals should not be used and should be disposed of safely. Your local council can advise you of nearest disposal point. Buying chemical treatments for the garden can be a daunting experience if you are not familiar with them. There a multitude of different brands, chemicals and uses.
centres have always had this by choice, but it now applies to everyone. Ask to speak to that person in your store and they will guide you to the solution to your problem. In many cases, actually removing part of an unidentified weed or diseased plant and bringing it into the garden centre will make the whole process much easier and quicker.
As always, don’t put diseased plant waste in your brown bin as this waste is usually recycled into compost. And if you cannot get what you need from your local store, pay us a visit at Cardwell in Gourock. Hopefully the decent weather we have had up until now will continue through the summer and into the autumn. We gardeners have not had a good run at it for some years now.
A recent change in legislation now means that any shop selling garden chemicals must have someone trained in the products available at all times to advise you, the consumer. To be honest, most good garden

Big
Cover Up
When we think of Summer swimwear and beachwear play a really big part in the planning of our holiday wardrobes. For me, the cover up, is the most important item. It’s the one thing that I can actually look forward to buying! The versatility of the perfect cover up is second to none, it’s a great multi tasker, getting you to the beach or pool in perfect style, allowing you to cover up bits that you’d rather not have out on show, then it can also take you on to dinner. There’s not many other clothing items that can do all that - and with so many different styles, lengths, patterns and colours it won’t be difficult to find a couple of cover ups that are perfect just for you.

Holiday Glamour If you are something of a glamourpuss on holiday then you can’t beat the long white, flowing kaftan, pulled in at the waist to emphasize your body, this is full on glamour - a word of advice though - this look is not for the faint hearted, it shows a lot of cleavage and a lot of leg so you need to be pretty confident to successfully pull it off. To perfectly accessorise the summer goddess look, team with simple gold accent jewellery, a few long thin necklaces and some gold bangles. If you’ve had your hair pinned up during the day, then all you need to do is shake it free, put on some red lipstick and you’re good to go straight to the bar after the beach.

Chicken Saltimbocca Nick says, ‘This simple recipe is so delicious, I use it all the time. Saltimbocca means ‘jump in the mouth’ in Italian, because the combination of sage, good quality prosciutto, and succulent chicken gets your taste buds excited! I serve it with freshly made tagliatelli tossed in butter, pepper and Parmesan, plus a rocket salad.’
Serves 4 • • •
3 large skinless chicken breasts (about 450g) 12 slices prosciutto or Parma ham, sea salt
• • • •
freshly ground black pepper 12-18 large fresh sage leaves seasoned plain flour, for dusting 2 tbsp olive oil 50g butter
Slice the chicken breasts in half horizontally into thin escalopes, 2 or 3, depending on the thickness of the chicken. Cut each half in 2 equal pieces, diagonally across the grain. Put the pieces between sheets of cling wrap and bat out thinly – and reasonably gently – using a rolling pin, without tearing. Unwrap, and season each chicken escalope with black pepper. Put a sage leaf on every escalope and then lay a slice of prosciutto

ham on top, making sure the slice is long enough so that it will cover both sides. Turn the escalope over, and fold the remaining half of the ham over to cover it. Bat down again gently on both sides until the ham merges a little with the chicken. Don’t worry at this stage if it tears a little or the sage leaf pokes through. Dust the escalopes with flour on both sides. Heat the oil in a frying pan. Fry the escalopes a few at

Don’t overcook or the chicken will be dry. Remove and keep warm while you cook the remainder. Serve piping hot with plenty of lemon wedges to squeeze over, and tagliatelle tossed in butter, black pepper and Parmesan, plus a lightly dressed rocket salad.
