Europe’s biggest annual imaging show closes its doors. What now?

With the predicted growth of the compact interchangeable lens market, it is perhaps surprising that more key accessories geared towards this target audience have not reached the market yet. Think Tank Photo has now announced the release of a new camera bag collection scaled to fit today’s smaller mirrorless cameras on their own or with accessories such as lenses and an iPad. The Mirrorless Mover collection offers top quality materials and build quality that reflect the investment the consumer has made in their CSC.

Farewell to Focus

News Following speculation in last issue from Pixel’s ‘Insider’, we can reveal that Anthony Jacobs is back in action and is setting up an online-only second hand camera business - the Cherished Camera Company. As we went to press, the new website went live, although at the moment it’s still at ‘launching soon’ stage. The site explains that the company will buy and sell pre-loved DSLRs and accessories from brands such as Canon, Nikon, and Leica, and stresses the company’s 42 year imaging pedigree. We understand that CSCs and compacts won’t be part of the Cherished Camera Company‘s business. Pixel will be speaking with Anthony soon, so stay tuned.

www.pixel.co.uk

As Pixel went to press (and so, thanks to social networking and our industry’s ever active grapevine, common knowledge by the time this printed edition reaches you) it was announced that 2013’s Focus On Imaging was the last. After 24 years and more than half a million visitors, Mary Walker - trade icon and winner of Pixel’s Outstanding Contribution to the Industry Award - has announced the decision to bring the show to an end, rather than selling it. in her statement, she expressed pride in the acheivements of her team and the event itself, and thanked visitors, exhibitors and the Mary Walker Events team for their support and dedication. We’re prepared for commenters outside of our industry to see this end of an era as a symptom of the decline of ‘traditional’ photography, but all the evidence shows that imaging, as Mary was astute to distinguish from photography all those years ago, is a thriving, growing trade and Focus remained well supported by visitors and exhibitors. Instead, commentors see a future for an event that expands to cover the more diverse spectrum of imaging today. LMG (Pixe’sl parent company) will be hosting an advisory board meeting to

discuss the development of a new exhibition for the imaging industry. If you would like to join us on the 18th June and are keen to support the event, please contact simon@lifemediagroup.co.uk. Pixel would like to once again personally thank Mary and her team for their hard work and contribution to our industry. We’re sure that the legacy of Focus will continue to inspire the trade. In Mary’s own words, “I am certain that the time is right for the industry to find fresh opportunities - maybe we’re due a revolution of some kind?”

Power To Integration

Massive new Canon campaign aims to inspire consumer loyalty throughout the range and encourages that all-important step-up purchase.

Canon has rolled out a major new through-the-line marketing campaign using the theme ‘Power to your next step’. The campaign, the first from Canon to encompass all consumer and pro product categories, will run across EMEA throughout the summer and beyond. On the first official day of the campaign, the new TV advert aired 213 times on UK television. The commercial will also be shown on video on

demand services. The TV advert’s not all: there will also be a comprehensive print campaign, social media efforts and more. Pixel spoke to Nigel Taylor about how the campaign will reach consumers and what that means to retail - you can read the interview on page 14. The TV advert shows Canon users taking their next step with a variety of different products – compact cameras, DSLRs, video cameras, printers and Canon’s Cinema EOS range are all featured.

alert: Camera thefts Dealers warned to be vigilant as thieves target high-value imaging kit. A Leica camera, Summicron lens and a filter were stolen from family-run London dealer Red Dot Cameras recently. Ivor Cooper, Red Dot’s MD, has circulated a CCTV image that he believes to show the man he suspects of the theft to other dealers, and says that many report being targeted by the same suspect. Harpers Photographic, Canterbury Camera Centre and others are also suspected to have been victims of the same criminal. The day after the Red Dot robbery, staff at LCE in the Strand reported a man fitting the same description in their store, who fled when approached by wary staff. The alleged thief seems to engage staff about high-value products, then uses delaying tactics and frequently use his mobile phone, before waiting until staff are dealing with another customer to escape with the products. Ivor Cooper believes thieves maybe targeting other Leica stockists including Selfridges. “Whether it’s the same criminal or not, we all need to be on our guard, Ivor told Pixel. “Now

that the cameras we sell are so high-value, we are all targets. Thieves have given up on jewellers, where the same value products are protected by buzzer entry systems and inhouse security teams, and seem to be going for camera dealers. The stolen Leica M-E’s serial number is 4422798 and the lens is marked 4214146. Police are on the look out for a white male in his fifties or sixties, around 5ft 5, with receding grey hair. Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

GfK looks at why the UK isn’t keeping up with the neighbours when it comes to imaging sales

Leica: Taking Another Look at CSC Market?

In Great Britain, the imaging market has been challenged recently due to some important high street retailers having closed down. But was that the only reason? What is happening to our neighbours? The total imaging market value declined by 18% in the first quarter 2013 compared to the same period a year ago in Great Britain. This is one of the highest declines in Europe. Two years ago, Leica strongly hinted that the company planned to announce a CSC at photokina, but none materialised and they’ve been very quiet about the issue ever since. Now, rumours are starting to run riot again as Leica have published a teaser on their website, which describes the ‘new family member’, the Mini M... and it looks a lot like a CSC to many internet commentors. The teaser itself says the model will be positioned above the Micro M compact camera, and below the Leica M rangefinder, which would be a logical location for a CSC.

InfoTrends has a new study: “How to Influence the Next Wave of Buyers. “The impact of compact interchangeable lens cameras on the DSLR market is just beginning to be felt, now that all the major camera vendors offer them, said Ed Lee, Group Director at InfoTrends. “The challenge for vendors is to come up with the products and features that will to attract new buyers. This study will explore what drives activity among DILC owners, and which products they use and anticipate using in the future. It will look at important topics such as: Why consumer-level hobbyists are choosing one particular interchangeable lens camera over another; What will motivate current owners and non-owners to enter the buying cycle or upgrade, and the growing use and importance of HD video capture. You’re the experts. Ahead of Infotrends’ official report, we’d like to invite you to submit your thoughts on these topics to the editor (laura@lifemediagroup.co.uk) and we’ll see how the stats reflect reality on the high street.

Getty Exhibit HTC If you needed further proof that phone photography is being taken seriously...here it is. HTC, has launched ‘Inside Street Football,’ a new exhibition showing the impressive results of Getty Images photographers using the HTC One to shoot grass roots football across twelve cities in Europe and the Middle East. Taking inspiration from HTC’s global partnership with The UEFA Champions League and ‘Inside Street Football’ utilises the key features of the HTC One UltraPixel camera such as HTC Zoe Speaking about the

exhibition, Phil Blair, HTC Head of EMEA, said: “Most people carry a smartphone around with them every day and use it to capture and share content, so it made absolute sense to put the award winning HTC One into the hands of Getty Images photographers to capture the places people genuinely enjoy kicking around a ball.”

The Portable Power Revolution

Battery drain is one of consumers’ main complaints about their much loved smartphones. Feed their need with high-margin products. Make sure you’re fully charged for your customers’ holiday and festival needs! EagleTech have released the Neptor NP056K Portable Battery Pack to its collection of tablet and smartphone power reserves. The NP056K features a Dual USB 2.0 Output to power two mobile devices simultaneously, comes in five colours and is ergonomically designed to feel nice in the hand, fit nicely in the pocket and provide phone users with a reliable back up so they don’t run out of power at crucial moments. They retail for around the £30 mark.

Tablets: Not Just Big Smartphones. Despite increasing convergance of functions, both devices have distinct usage, confirms study.

Research from Forrester has made an official distinction that tablets are not simply larger touchscreen smartphones. They differ in who uses them, where, what for and how long for. Tablets tend to be passed from person to person more for content sharing, and tend to be used more within the home, but smartphones aree still used far more on the go, as the always-on device and still edge ahead in terms of photography and video capture, although tablets offer an easier format for image viewing and editing, which makes the distinction particularly important for app and software designers.

News FlickR to be Integrated into Apple iOS?

Powerocks’ Super Magicstick, provides 2800 mAh of power for two full charges for smartphones, tablets etc. After charging, Super Magicstick can be re-charged using the included USB cable. Its smart LED indicator shows remaining capacity and charging status, turning red when charging, and blue when fully charged. Super Magicstick also charges Bluetooth headsets, cameras, GPS devices, tablets, and more.

New Lumia: is a Tablet Next?

Yet more imaging improvements... Nokia’s newly available Lumia 925 offers even more advanced camera capabilities. The Nokia Conversations blog says “At the heart of the new camera is the next generation of image processing software and the most advanced lens technology [including] the new Nokia Smart Camera mode that offers an easy way to take ten shots at once and then edit them afterwards with tools and effects like Best Shot, Action Shot and Motion Focus.” Rumours of a Nokia Lumia tablet are once again prominent on the web.

Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference includes the unveiling of iOS 7, and rumours abound that this next version will include deep integration with social networks other than Twitter and Facebook. 9to5Mac recently reported that Flickr and Vimeo will be “integrated deeply” into the operating system. This means that iPhone and iPad users with the next generation of the system will be able to sign on to these social networks via Apple’s Settings menu, allowing more options for posting and sharing content. It also saves users having to enter their log in details when using these sites.

Sony Adjusts Mobile Targets Sony has cut its sales targets for they year end March 2015 by around 15 per cent. Sony’ is currently the fourth largest smartphone vendor by volume, and shares space in the top 5 smartphone makers by market share with LG, HTC, BlackBerry and Samsung. At the same time as Sony cut its forecasts, sales of Samsung’s new Galaxy S4 have surpassed the ten million units mark, just two months after its launch. The model is currently estimated to be selling at a rate of four units per second. Sony now predicts smartphone and tablet sales of 1.5 trillion yen.

However, the 19.5” segment still accounts for a considerable amount of sales throughout Europe. With six competitive new models, AOC are offering a potential boost for this segment. Although only slightly smaller than the 20” versions, the new models will be available at noticeably lower prices. With the WSXGA resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels, these displays easily outgun the WXGA (1366 x 768) panels often utilised

in similar product segments, offering users better imaging for the same spend. With 37% more pixels, users will benefit from more graphic detail, brilliant images and videos. Thanks to the WSXGA resolution and proportionally more space for their application windows, working on these monitors is more convenient, and with these new models that convenience is available without the price tag of 20” versions.

A Piece of Cake Raspberry Pi gets long-awaited camera module - sure to be a hit with computer hobbyists. Those tunning their living room computing and entertainment on a Raspberry Pi now have more user-generated imaging capability! The eagerly anticipated Raspberry Pi camera board enables pictures and video to be taken with the Raspberry Pi ,which can be used for security and VoIP projects as well as image and video capture. The camera is just one of a strong pipeline

of exclusive Raspberry Pi accessories to be launched this year, and it will retail for around £18 in the UK. The custom designed add-on for the Raspberry Pi attaches to one of the small sockets on the board’s upper surface. The camera board itself is tiny, at around 25mm x 20mm x 9mm and offers a 5 megapixel native resolution sensor - capable of 2592 x 1944 pixel static images - and supports 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p60/90 video.

Big Screens, Bigger Sales Growth in large screen model sales makes up for general decline in LCD sales across EMEA region, say Futuresource.

EMEA Pro monitor shipments dropped 11% in the first quarter of this year, according to Futuresource. “This can be largely attributed to declines within the LCD market, especially within the 15-16” and 17-19” segments,” says Claire McMahon, Market Analyst - Broadcast Equipment, Futuresource Consulting. However, the 17-19” segment witnessed a marked rise, increasing 90% to reach 369 units. Countries

across MEA are increasing funding to broadcast infrastructure, and the rise of sales within the 17-19” segment can be attributed to the popularity of 19” racks within broadcast. Looking to Europe, shipments of OLED, experienced falls of 11% due mainly to heavy declines in Italy as the region fails to maintain the high levels seen in Q3 and Q4 2012. “However, due to the aforementioned increased investment in broadcast across MEA, OLED shipments increased 160% QoQ, to 115 units,” says McMahon. In terms of value, the overall EMEA market only declined 2% quarter on quarter to €13.2 million, as increased sales within the growing 22-26” segment helped to boost ASP and offset the declines in the value of OLED models. The MEA market experienced an increase quarter on quarter in value terms of 64%, to €2.3 million.

THE BIG INTERVIEW

PP

Pixel speaks to Nigel Taylor, Consumer Imaging Marketing Communications Director, Canon Europe, about the Power to Your Next Step campaign.

What are the origins of the Power to Your Next Step message? Our integrated “power to” message began last year, but the new campaign brings it to a new level. It’s about talking to consumers in terms they understand about what a product can do for them, rather than blinding them with specs and numbers. Consumer education is key to all campaigns of this sort, but we felt it was particularly important to help photographers truly understand how Canon products can be there, at every stage of their photographic journey. What sets Power to Your Next step apart from other campaigns? The big difference is that this campaign is cross-product range. It doesn’t just highlight one model or even one area – it encompasses DSC, DSLRs, right through to printers and will be a great platform for the launch of new products within that spectrum, in time. It not only shows the benefits of products themselves, but it helps consumers to understand how these products relate to and interact with each other to provide for that consumer at every step of their imaging journey, whether they’re using a camera for the first time, graduating from a compact to a more enthusiast model or printing out their photographic acheivements. We want to inspire and support everyone in taking their ‘next step’. It’s not only about ensuring a customer finds the right product for that next step but that they are inspired to actually take it, to grow their hobby.

“The consistent reinforcement of the Power to Your Next step message reminds customers that there is a Canon product for all their imaging needs” How will this campaign benefit Canon’s retail partners? I think it’s uniquely placed to do so as it pushes the full range and the brand itself, so no Canon dealer will find themselves unable to make the most of it because they don’t carry a particular item, or because something is out of stock. It raises general awareness of all of Canon’s products, linking tactical individual messages relating to particular products or ranges with continuous branding. Whatever individual promotion an advert might carry, the consistent “Power to your next step” reinforcement reminds customers that there is a Canon product to suit their imaging needs. The new campaign reflects this and Canon’s brand vision of helping people realise the ‘Power of Image’. More than just an advertising idea, the campaign is an expression of this commitment, which will be brought to life across all marketing channels. What is encompassed by the phrase “all marketing channels”? Well, so far you’ll have seen that ‘Power to your next step’ is present in print and on television. It will also be present in-store across Europe, with eye-catching POS carrying the

artwork used in the print executions to help consumers recognise products in store in relation to the campaign. PR and social media campaigns will also carry the ‘next zstep’ message to consumers. A 90 second version of the TV advert has also been created for use online. How can retailers get involved and make the most of this campaign? In addition to the general benefit to Canon retail partners, Power To Your Next Step will be enhanced with Point of Sale material, as discussed, and some retailers will also benefit from in store merchandisers and demonstrators to empower them to further empower their customers. We will fully encourage in-store continuation of this campaign. “Power to your next step” is a very natural addition to retailers’ conversations with consumers. Whether they know what their next step is or not, whether they have chosen the right product for it or have yet to decide, this campaign is about letting consumers know that Canon have the imaging products to empower them on their photographic journey.
