Staying true to the X Series functional Fujifilm’s New Professional Service Scheme Fujifilm began selling both compact and professional film cameras in the 1960s and at that time set up a comprehensive repair service across all major European countries. In 1995 the service was expanded and customised to the modern ‘digital’ customer. Since then, most of Fujifilm’s service was dedicated to compact digital cameras – it’s only recently that the service centres have begun to service interchangeable cameras and lenses. With the increasing numbers of professional photographers switching to Fujifilm mirrorless cameras like the X-Pro2 and X-T2, and also with the launch of the GFX medium format mirrorless system

Steering away from cameras and into the space and memory sector of the industry, SanDisk made a couple of new product announcements at this year’s CES, one being the 256GB microSDXC card. Meeting A1 performance standards, this microSDCX card is designed to expand smartphone storage for photos and videos as well as provide space to store and run apps. It’s said to achieve transfer speeds ranging up to 95MB/s. At this capacity, the card is able to store up to 24 hours of 1080p Full HD video. The A1 performance standard means this microSD card can handle random read input-output access per second, also called IOPS, of 1,500, as well as a write IOPS of 500. As such, SanDisk says this card is suitable for handling in-app permissions, graphics and audio, and save profiles on a smartphone. The A1 spec is particularly useful in in light of Android Marshmallow 6’s option for storing and launching apps from the microSD card. The new SanDisk Ultra microSD card with A1 is compatible with the SanDisk Memory Zone app for Android™, giving users an easy way to manage and back up content on their device.

MEMORY
It’s All About the Memory
We are living in a lifelogging era; everything is documented and stored digitally, whether on your phone, tablet, computer or digital camera. Of course cameras are there to capture moments in time and preserve memories – it’s no good if you don’t have the means of storing them
T
his is where memory technology comes in. Memory storage has developed massively over the years, alongside the huge leaps and bounds that the digital photography industry has made. Not only do we all document continually, professional and enthusiast photography equipment is now catered to taking the best quality photos at the highest resolution in the quickest time, which would have been unimaginable for an SD card of 20 years ago to comprehend. The 4K video recording function has meant that memory capacity has needed to up its game massively. The safe storage and transfer of these (huge) files has given birth to a demand of more pro-end solutions in the consumer space and of course, these carry a higher price point than your average SD card. For example, anyone with an Apple® iPhone 6s can capture 4K video, and just 30 minutes of footage will take up to 11GB of space. Professional videographers capturing 4K resolution video at 60fps are creating 400MB per second, or 1.4 terabytes per hour of raw footage, and will often back-up their footage in multiple places for safety. This doesn’t even take into account post-production, or transferring content on to clients etc. Now digital camera technology fuels business opportunities for SD memory cards, and future developments in one cannot come without the other. The value of the SD card market has increased from 2015 to 2016 by 1%, despite a 4% decline in units sold, while the rate of value increased from

Western Digital Corporation recently unveiled its SanDisk 1TB SDXC™ card prototype at Photokina, the world’s leading trade fair for photo and video professionals, although these are yet to be released. One of the brand’s most prevalent releases though, has been the 512GB Extreme Pro, which was first released back in 2014. The 512GB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card represents a 1,000-fold capacity increase in just over a decade, yet maintains the same size footprint. As SanDisk’s most powerful and highest capacity SD UHS-I memory card so far, the 512GB card delivers write speeds up to 90 MB per second and UHS Speed Class 3 recording speed for high resolution, real-world colour and stutter-free 4K Ultra HD video. With increasing demand for high resolution content, such as 4K and 8K, the company continues to push the boundaries of technology with solutions that support the exponential growth of data-intensive production demands. Ruben Dennenwaldt, Senior Product Marketing Manager at EMEAI said: “Today the most widely spread format and memory product in highest demand is microSD. MicroSD cards are being used in multiple devices like smartphones, tablets, action cameras, drones and many more which makes them perfect allrounders. Given the market trends of 4K video and advanced computational photography it’s important to choose the right capacity and performance as well. Our 64GB and 128GB
Extreme microSD cards are a perfect fit for most consumers.” Vice President of Product Management at Western Digital’s Content Solutions Business Unit also commented on the company’s success over the years: “Sixteen years ago we introduced the first SanDisk 64MB SD™ card and today we are enabling capacities of 1TB. Over the years our goal has remained the same; continue to innovate and set the pace

for the imaging industry. The SanDisk 1TB SD card prototype represents another significant achievement as growth of high-resolution content and capacity-intensive applications such as virtual reality, video surveillance and 360 video, are progressing at astounding rates.” Toshiba Electronics Europe has also further extended its family of EXCERIA PROTM memory products with the SDXC N501 and microSDXC M402 cards. With strong features for capturing 4K video, these new cards will appeal to all those wishing to capture professional grade images and video. In addition to this, Toshiba’s EXCERIA PROTM N501 UHS-II speed class 3 (U3) series features new capacities of up to 256GB and improved data transfer speeds, causing it to be the ideal product for 4K video recording and continuous shooting. Also, these cards have a maximum write speed of 250MB/s and a maximum read speed of 270MB/s, delivering exceptional performance throughout the entirety of its use. The series also features an adapter that provides the user with a wide variety of use options. All members of the M402 family are shock, water, temperature and X-ray proof to allow use in the toughest environments. All in all, it’s clear to see that the memory sector of the photographic industry is continuing to innovate and grow just as fast as any other, as manufacturers are understanding of the importance of memory for professionals and amateurs alike.

SANDISK
A History of Innovation Pixel caught up with Peak Development, Who highlight the SanDisk innovations that have helped transform the industry, as well as outlining what we can expect in the months to come
P
eak Development (Peak) first partnered with SanDisk back in 1995 to become SanDisk’s first ever European Distributor. At the time, Digital Cameras were already driving the development of flash memory cards towards smaller, cheaper and higher performance form factors. Well over twenty years later, the two companies still share one of the longest running relationships in the industry. At Photokina 2016, SanDisk gave the Photographic Industry a glimpse of the future when they demonstrated the world’s first 1 TB SDXC Card. It seems hard to believe that 16 years earlier it was the 64MB SD Card that was making headlines. With increasing demand for high resolution content, such as 4K and 8K, SanDisk has continued to push the boundaries of technology and set the pace for the imaging industry. Higher capacity cards expand the possibilities for professional videographers and photographers, giving them a greater ability to create more of
the highest quality content, without the interruption of changing cards. Whilst SanDisk has not officially announced availability of the 1TB SDXC Card, it’s worth bearing in mind that it was only a matter of months after SanDisk announced the ground breaking 512GB Extreme Pro SDXC Card that it became available to buy. The SanDisk 512GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card continues to provide uncompromising performance for hi resolution image and 4K Ultra HD video recording. With write speeds of up to 90MB/s, the card handles rapid shots, sequential burst shooting and RAW plus JPEG capture with ease, whilst Read speeds of up to 95MB/s allow photographers to offload big files quicker. With 4 minutes of HD video taking up approx. 661MB of storage and 4 minutes of Ultra HD video taking up approx. 1.6GB of storage, Drones and Action Cams are helping
“Already in 2017 SanDisk has launched its fastest, high capacity USB Flash Drive and unveiled the World’s first microSD card with the new A1 SD Specification”
to drive microSD capacity and performance. SanDisk Extreme microSDHC/microSDXC UHS-I cards deliver that speed. This fast, high-performing card is now rated UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) with a V30 UHS Video Speed Class, guaranteeing sustained write speeds of 30MB/s. Already in 2017 SanDisk has launched its fastest, high capacity USB Flash Drive and unveiled the World’s first microSD card with the new A1 SD specification. Look out for the A1 logo on the SanDisk Extreme microSD card packaging. It guarantees the performance needed to launch apps quickly and to store and play audio visual content, photos, videos and music. Over the last twenty-two years, Peak Development has won numerous industry awards for their work with SanDisk. They are one of only a few SanDisk Distributors to keep a wide range of SanDisk product in stock, and available for next day delivery or same day local collection. Through the SanDisk Official Photo Partner Program, Peak Development continues to offer a real focus to Photographic and Broadcast Specialists, and the keenest supported pricing available.

Here, Pixel takes a look at some user experiences of the Frontier-S DX100, Fujifilm’s compact and high quality printer produced to meet the diverse needs and challenges of the retail minilab, retail kiosk and event photography
T
he summer of 2016 saw Fujifilm hit the road with the Wonder Photo Tour initiative. From July to September, Fujifilm travelled to key family festivals around the UK, generating interest and inspiring people to print their pictures – and the Frontier-S DX100 played an instrumental part in the Wonder Photo Tour’s success. Peter Wigington, Marketing Manager for Photo Imaging at Fujifilm said: “The Frontier-S DX100 was the obvious printer to take on the Fujifilm Wonder Photo Tour. Fast, reliable, cost effective and with a surprisingly compact footprint, the DX100 is a powerful printer that can help you to take your event business to the next level.”
Frontier-S DX100 Specification Print size: 127 x 89mm to 210 x 1,000mm Print speed: Up to 360 prints per hour (4”x 6”) Print resolution: Standard mode 720 x 720dpi; High Quality mode 720 x 1,440dpi Paper loading: 1 roll paper feeder Paper type: Glossy / Lustre / Silk / Fine Art Matte Roll Paper Length: 65m / Width: 102mm, 127mm, 152mm, 203mm, 210mm Ink cartridges: 6 colours (C,M,Y,K,SB,P) dye-based ink. Dilip Joshi of DeeJay Photography explains how the DX100 has helped his business grow: “I had been outsourcing the printing aspect of my photography business and I’d generally considered the process of managing both the photography and printing workflow at weddings and events a little daunting. However, winning the DX100 offered me the chance to expand my commercial opportunities, especially at weddings, and sell prints during the event, rather than afterwards. One of the most important aspects of printing for any professional photographer is image quality. There cannot be a compromise between speed and convenience when it comes to image quality. I have to be confident that the images are going to be reproduced faithfully and for me; this really is where the DX100 comes into its own. For me, as a small business owner who needs portability, I find this printer extremely useful. It has the capability to cope with varied print volumes, and in terms of consumables and quality, you would be hardpressed to find a better solution. Looking to the future, I can see a number of areas where the DX100 will help me to improve my business. For example, I can now bring in a second shooter on larger jobs and money taken from selling prints on the night will cover that cost.”
Time Photography’s Virginia talks about her experience with the DX100: “The quality of the prints is just as important as the volume of prints and from day one we have been very happy with the quality this printer produces. Image after image, the DX100 renders each picture superbly. And the number of images that the printer can ‘run’ without us having to check or adjust anything is incredible. There are often days when I can just let it run for hours at a time. The DX100 fits perfectly in the boot of our car, without having to lower the back seats or make any other adjustments and is perfectly manageable when moving from shoot to shoot. The DX100 is a real workhorse. It’s powered us through our busiest times of years without complaint. In fact, it has become such an integral part of our business that we have just bought a second unit! I would definitely recommend the DX100 to any photographic business that is looking to take more control of their printing and increase the options they can offer to their clients.”
