DNP Announce Partnership with Tour de France 2016

There’s no doubt that manufacturer roadshows are a growing trend. They offer the ability for a company to take their message directly to the end user, whilst supporting their retail partners as they go. This very issue is littered with such activities, but as we approached our press date, we learned of a partnership that really caught our attention. Roadshows take all manner of shape and size, with only the organisers imagination offering limitations to what’s possible. DNP, however, have announced that they’ve partnered with the ultimate roadshow – the Tour de France! Read more on P22. PHOTO -

Nikon Responds to Enquiries About D500 Battery Life Responding to customer queries, Nikon have addressed concerns relating to the D500’s battery life. On their support page Nikon have confirmed that certain individually purchased D500 batteries have a shorter than normal life. They said: “ENEL15 batteries supplied with the D500 have been tested in accordance with CIPA standards, and do support the maximum number of shots possible (battery life) indicated in brochures and other documentation. However, when some EN-EL15 batteries purchased separately, or supplied

with another model of camera, are used with the D500, those batteries may not be capable of the maximum number of shots possible (battery life) indicated in D500 documentation.” “If any customer has purchased a D500 and also own premodification EN-EL15 batteries – perhaps supplied with another model camera or purchased separately - they may request replacement of those batteries with modified batteries. Nikon will replace the batteries free of charge.” For full details and information on identifying affected batteries visit: nikoneurope-en.custhelp. com

Horsing Around with Fujifilm Simon Skinner, Editor at Pixel Magazine and Lee Mansfield, Managing Director join the Fujifilm team at Royal Ascot

For what must have occurred as a unique phenomenon, the team from Fujifilm were lucky enough to stave off the rain, enjoying a relatively sunny day at Royal Ascot this year. This annual event is a time when Fujifilm entertain various clients, dealers and members of the press and this year it presented Pixel with an opportunity to chat with some of our readers as we were invited to join them for the day.

What a day it was too. Seeing beyond the fact that every single horse that we bet on came in backwards, we learned of a host of activities and announcements coming from Fujifilm. It’s fair to say that these are exciting times for the brand, showing real endeavour in supporting their network of dealers; both in the camera and photofinishing divisions. You can read more on these activities and announcements in their exclusive Pixel ‘takeover’ edition.

Cactus Unveil the V6II After the storming successes that have accompanied the original Cactus Wireless Flash Transceiver, Pixel has the lowdown on the latest version

After two years in the making the Cactus V6 II & IIs have been announced as the second generation of the very first cross-brand wireless flash transceiver, and now, the Cactus also supports high-speed synchronisation (HSS). Harnessing the remote power control of Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax flashes all at the same time, the new models now support HSS/FP mode in the same cross-brand environment. This unique function offers photographers a potential flexibility that’s been unheard of to date, offering a cross-brand solution for photographers who work with various manufacturers’ kit. The Cactus press release also tells us that the new V6II extends HSS capabilities to Fujifilm cameras even though they don’t currently support high-speed sync (at the time of writing). Features at a Glance • Cross-brand wireless manual power and

zoom control with HSS support of Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sony flashes;
 • Two cross-brand high-speed sync modes: 1. Normal HSS supports shutter speeds up to 1/8000s
 2. Power Sync boosts flash contribution above camera’s x-sync speed
 • Multi-master supports up to 20 photographers firing the same set of flashes at their own power settings; • AF-assist light assists focusing in low light environment
 • Flash profile customisation ensures accurate power output
 • Work seamlessly with the Cactus RF60 series to support HSS and Power Sync The Cactus V6 II and IIs will be available in July and August 2016 respectively and both are priced at £89 RRP and available from Swains International PLC 01485 536200.

BEHIND THE COUNTER

Behind The Counter

Pixel’s Behind The Counter section shines the spotlight on counter-staff to delve into the daily life of photo retail

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened in store? Elle: I flooded the darkroom. That was pretty embarrassing. Ben: Having my photo plastered in every frame in the shop after it got taken for the local paper at the Falmouth beer festival, I have lovely bosses… Paul Bufton - Owner: Serving a cutomer with her large format print of her dog with a “lovely expression” only for her to see what she could not with her 6x4 he was having a pee at the time! What’s the strangest thing a customer has asked you? Elle: People often come in and ask to have their eyes tested, we have to stop ourselves laughing as we direct them to the optician next door. Evangeline: I was once asked if I wanted to buy a caravan. It did look like a rather nice one but I did have to say no. Paul: To remove the first wife from the group wedding photo and put in his second! If you could have any camera kit for free, what would it be? Elle: I’d sell my soul for a digital Hasselblad. Ben: I love old 35mm cameras, just the mechanics of them all fascinate me, so anything interesting really. In practical terms an upgrade on my old Nikon D50 body would be quite useful! Evangeline: Tricky question but the Leica M Monochrom (Type 246) would be an amazing piece of kit to own. Obviously any Leica would be nice but it would make me spend more time shooting in B&W which I haven’t done enough of recently. Black and white or colour photography? Elle: When I lived in the city I would have said B&W, but since moving to Cornwall I’ve been converted to colour. Ben: Definitely colour, Cornwall is such a beautiful colourful place, it has to be captured in all its glory! Evangeline: Ooh, that’s a hard one. I guess it depends what I’m shooting. If I’m out walking around Cornwall’s beautiful scenery, I will mostly be shooting in colour. However, whenever I photograph people I prefer to do so in B&W.

The Falmouth Team, on one of our Christmas party nights & yes they were taking selfies and some were even blurred!!!

Behind the Counter turns the spotlight on counter staff in photographic shops across the country with a mix of silly and (slightly more) pertinent questions. Here, counter staff at The Photo Shop have kindly provided the answers you’ve been dying to know. If you own/run/work in a camera shop and you’d like to get involved, please email jenny@pixel.co.uk

What’s your opinion of ‘selfies’? Elle: For me, “selfies” rather than selfportraits always look dead in the eyes as the gaze is on their own picture on the screen rather than into the lens. Paul: Selfies? Great for business and the staff love them. Ben: Don’t get me started… What’s your favourite thing to take pictures of? Elle: The Sea. Underwater landscapes and wrecks, I love how something man made is so quickly reclaimed by nature. Ben: Bread! I do a lot of baking outside of work and it’s all I seem to take photos of these days. It’s the first time I’ve played with any kind of product photography and I’m really enjoying it. Evangeline: Animals. Mostly in their natural habitats. I find it fascinating how nature comes up with so many different colour combinations and patterns. Paul: Animals on the skyline or the brow of a hill. What got you into photography in the first place? Ben: I always seem to have had a camera of some sort and growing up in Cornwall there is so much to photograph, it’s hard to resist. Paul: The Wife.

Evangeline: My family have always taken lots of photos, I remember when I was young I’d always love looking through old photo albums. My parents bought me a little camera for Christmas one year and ever since then I’ve not stopped shooting. You are prolific photo-printers. Have you seen an increase in demand over the last 12 months? Ben: Yes definitely! Photographic services are becoming harder to find on the high street, and we are picking up a lot of trade from that, people are relieved to stumble across us. Also the ever-expanding University up the road from our shop helps, the students still have a real passion for photography and 35mm in particular. Paul: There is a massive increase in printing from phones with new babies prevalent. Again the team really enjoy the little mites and the quality images blow them away! What single thing would improve your business right now? Ben: Get a new carpet! Seriously though, improving our web presence is the priority right now. Paul: Some changes to the shop layout and being able to buy cameras from distributors and manufacturers without the massive price discrimination.

from the British Chamber of Commerce Acting Director General stated in a joint statement: “Some business people will be pleased with the result, and others resigned to it. Yet all companies will expect swift, decisive, and coordinated action from the government and the Bank of England to stabilise markets if trading conditions or the availability of capital change dramatically. Business will want to see a detailed plan to support the economy during the coming transition period - as confidence, investment, hiring and growth would all be deeply affected by a prolonged period of uncertainty. If ever there were a time to ditch the straight-jacket of fiscal rules for investment in a better business infrastructure, this is it. Businesses need action to maintain economic stability, a timeline for exit, and answers to their many practical, real-world questions about doing business during and after this historic transition. Firms want help to get Britain back to business at a time of great uncertainty. The health of the economy must be the number one priority – not the Westminster political post-mortem.” Mike Cherry, National Chairman, Federation of Small Businesses:

Carolyn Fairbairn, Director General, Confederation of British Industry told Pixel: “The first part of the plan must be to get strong, calm and decisive leadership in place as soon as possible. Never has there been a more important time to put the interests of the country ahead of party politics. Businesses welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of a delay in triggering Article 50 to create

breathing space, but need rapid clarity on who is making the decisions. Second, we must agree the principles that should underpin our new relationship with Europe and the rest of the world. At the highest level, the government should resolve publicly to preserve the openness of the UK’s economy, one of its greatest strengths. This means seeking to protect tariff and barrier-free access to the single market, ensuring companies are able to continue to attract the best people to the UK with the skills we need, while recognising public concerns about immigration. And, it means setting out clearly how the UK will agree the right international trade deals with the wider world. The third action we must take is to forge close and deep collaboration between business of all sizes across the UK and the government to help shape our future economic relationships. The CBI and business leaders across the UK stand ready to work with the new leaders of our country to help chart the future course, starting as soon as practically possible.” Sarah Jones – Director at Cambrian Photography told us: “Straight after the result was announced, I would say that we had an incredibly quiet week. FSB calls on the Government for clarity on what these decisions now mean for business, including how businesses will have access to the single market and the free movement of people and trade. Nearly a quarter of FSB members export, with the majority exporting to the single market. Access to the single market means access to 500 million potential consumers, more than 26 million businesses and is worth 11 trillion euros. We call on the Government for clarity on the impact to smaller firms who export wider afield through EU FTA agreements.
These are crucial questions that need to be answered swiftly to ensure the UK’s 5.4 million small business confidence does not fall any further, which is already at the lowest levels since 2013. This includes clarity over the practical implications of this result on how smaller firms do business.

in general was very quiet. We haven’t had customers saying that they’re holding onto their money necessarily, but, and I speak for myself here too as a home owner, that we’re uncertain about what the banks will do and with regards to mortgages and interest rates, I’m being very careful and I think that I speak for most regular people in saying that. I am surprised about Wales to be honest, as there’s been so much EU money coming through in recent years. Things have picked up over the last couple of days (we spoke with Sarah at the very end of June) but I’m putting that down to payday

and the sheer numbers of holidaymakers that we’re seeing arrive for the weekend as we’re in a good catchment area for caravan parks and holiday parks. The next month or so will be telling though as general consumer confidence settles and more information form the government and banks comes to light. I can see our second-hand business increasing over the coming months and I intend to push our finance options too.” Mark Waters, Investment Manager, Skerritts:

The referendum result came as a surprise to many people, and certainly to markets. A remain vote had been expected by currency traders, right up until just after 10pm on Thursday night with Sterling rising against the Dollar. However, things quickly unwound as results started to come in with the Pound then plunging. As expected equity markets followed suit with sizeable falls across UK & European stock markets this morning. We are now entering unchartered territory but the key thing is not to panic. The fact that the result was announced on a Friday was a good thing. It allowed a weekend for markets to digest the outcome, rather than having an immediate three-day open period in which they would be reacting “in public”. After the initial shock we think markets will adjust to the new reality relatively quickly, given the two year exit period, and attention will turn quite rapidly towards the next “unknowns” that are approaching throughout the Summer – namely the Spanish election, the Italian Referendum and the US Election. Mark Williams, Clifton Cameras Said: “Whatever side of the enormous UK electorate divide we sit on, a decision has been made and this has to be respected. This is the beginning of a long process, a historic decision for this country and for Europe as a whole. UK retailers and importers will no doubt be keeping a close watch on the currency markets. Further price increases are a real and immediate concern for sure. Ultimately, UK businesses are seasoned to challenges, we almost thrive on it. No doubt, we’ve entered unchartered waters, there may

“I’m optimistic and in reality, the short-term pessimism and shock will wane. The exit will take years, our customers will continue with their lives and we will adapt to serve them in the best way that personifies what’s great about the country we live in” – Mark Williams, Clifton Cameras

well be challenges of uncertainty that as a country we’ll ride. For me, I’m optimistic and in reality, the short-term pessimism and shock will wane. The exit will take years, our customers will continue with their lives and we will adapt to serve them in the best way that personifies what’s great about the country we live in.” Shweta Jhajharia, Entrepreneur and Business Coach: “With the UK’s decision to leave the EU, we have now entered a period of extreme uncertainty. What is certain though is that the decisions made by small and medium enterprises (who make up about half of the economy), over the next few months will determine more than ever their individual success in this environment. SMEs generally have a low bandwidth when it comes to market information, cash flow and talent pool – all factors likely to be disrupted over the next few years. The pressure here can also quickly affect performance, and begin to affect profit margins. For SMEs with very little cash reserves and balance sheet strength, this could even threaten their very survival. However, the uncertainty and the confusion in the market will mean the best of times for those who are entrepreneurs in the true sense

of the word – those who know how to actively seek out opportunities. Commercial prudence will eventually prevail over instinctive reaction. There are SME owners who are going to thrive under the Brexit. These are the SME owners who have the financial literacy to understand the numbers in their business, those who are watching their margins closely, who are already planning on how to cast a wider net to draw in better talent, and who are constantly looking for ways to increase opportunities in their

pipeline. These SME owners will be learning how to protect their business well, strike when they have opportunities, and develop their own skills and competencies to negotiate effectively with the big players in the market. There may be reason to lament the exit of the EU, but the SME owners who are fastest to come to terms with the reality of Brexit are the ones who are going to thrive and continue on their paths of success and create the best of times for their business.” James Strickland, Co-founder and Group Sales Director, Passionate About People: “It is possible that the government will negotiate a Norway-type deal to remain as members of the European Economic Area (EEA) to maintain access to the single market, including free movement of workers. Another option for the UK is to adopt the Swiss approach and create bilateral trade agreements with certain countries, whereby an arrangement could be made between EU nationals currently working in the UK, and UK nationals currently working in EU countries. A fast-track visa process is still on the cards for the supply of skilled workers to travel and work within the EU, but this is also likely to be affected following a change in the government of border controls. Brexit has won, however, one thing is for certain: nothing will change overnight - negotiations, meetings, deals and formal resignations could take years to put in place.”

JEFF SCOWEN

Industry Veteran Jeff Scowen Wins Seat on Local Council

After 30 years of supplying the photographic trade via Jeff Scowen Photographics Ltd, Jeff retired from the industry back in 2012. Catching up with Jeff recently, he told Pixel about his new post as local councillor

T

hose of you who know Jeff and have dealt with him over the decades will know that he is not a man to stand still. As mentioned in our intro above, Jeff parted ways with the industry in 2012, selling his operation to the existing and successful Allcam business. Since then, Jeff has spent his time pursuing his hobbies and interests, which include regular open water swimming, painting, music and, of course, photography. Always a colourful character, Pixel was less than surprised to learn that Jeff had made the step into local politics in the town of Lyme Regis, where he now lives, and has recently won a seat on the local council. By his own admission, Jeff’s (tireless) campaign was less than orthodox, employing the use of social media to communicate his message to the people of Lyme Regis. Taking the lead in front of the camera, Jeff’s posts have shown the town, the people and the local businesses in all their glory and all with a fair slice of humour and fun. He told us: “It was my use of social media that swung it for me. It’s a sign of the times and my opponent would have won the race if I had not employed the use of the platforms to engage with new voters. I was told by people at the polling stations that there were a lot of young people turning up to vote,

so it’s a strategy that worked for me.” Along with his Facebook page, Jeff also worked with a local cartoonist and various others to highlight the community but also stated: “Let me please make it clear. I use humour, whether it be in my comedy videos, cartoons or comments to engage and reengage people in politics. I am however very serious about my new role as a Lyme Regis Town Councillor and very respectful of my privileged position and of the Town Council as a whole.” So serious, in fact, that he has taken on a bet with a local journalist, that if he is not the Mayor of the town within a year, he’ll donate £100 to a charity of the writer’s choice. The original forfeit was for the loser to walk along the Lyme Regis high street in just their underpants! After the closely fought poll that saw Jeff win the seat by just 36 votes, Jeff told us: “Now I just have to live up to things. My manifesto was full of specifics and people are expecting a lot from me.” In his manifesto, Jeff stated: “I am a

I’m a local film-maker, actor, reggae DJ, daily sea-swimmer, and have lived here for five years, but have visited since I was a child. I could have settled anywhere in the world but chose Lyme Regis for its beauty and people. I want to be on the Council in order to give something back to the place I love.”

Pentax Announce the K-70

Pentax (Ricoh Imaging) have announced their brand new DSLR camera. Superseding the K-50, the K-70 offers a multitude of advanced, user-friendly features previously only available on premium models and being compact, dustproof and weather-resistant, the camera has been designed with outdoor photography in mind

The K-70 is a mid-range camera, carrying a price point similar to other brand’s entrylevel models at £559.99 (body only). It has a 24MP CMOS sensor and can use its inbuilt sensor-shift system for a ‘Pixel Shift’ mode, which promises to reduce noise and improve resolution. The sensor-shift system can also be applied to simulate an anti-aliasing system so that you can choose whether they want maximum resolution or less moiré. The K-70’s PRIME MII image processor also allows 14-bit readout and a maximum ISO of 102,400. Film capture peaks at 1080/30p, expanded with a 4K interval mode that merges 4K resolution stills into a video file. The new Hybrid Autofocus (AF) system, combining imageplane phase-matching and contrast-detection autofocus technologies, delivers rapid and precise autofocus while also giving continuous autofocus for HD video recording. The new Pentax features the brand’s first Hybrid AF system with super-high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 102400, has a construction that promises dependable cold-proof performance down to temperatures as low as -10°C and incorporates a newly developed accelerator unit, which performs high-level noise processing in collaboration with the aforementioned imaging engine, allowing for the high sensitivity of ISO 102400.

The K-70’s optical viewfinder gives (almost) 100% field of view; and a built-in shake reduction mechanism with a shake reduction effect equivalent to approximately 4.5 shutter steps. It also features a built-in wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) module for remote shooting operation and easy transfer of images. Looking at the exterior of the K-70 it’s apparent that it’s designed for comfortable outdoor shooting. The userfriendly features include a newly designed grip, freshly designed mode dial and control buttons on the camera’s top and rear panels to offering good handling and operation. The camera also comes equipped with an outdoor-friendly LCD monitor on which the brightness of the screen can be adjusted according to the light levels of any given location. Its newly designed optics provide a minimum focusing distance of 0.95 metres, expanding the range of potential applications. With the incorporation of a retractable structure, it measures just 89mm in length. PRICING: RRP: £399.99

KODAK PRO FILM APP LAUNCHES ON ANDROID AND IPAD

“The growing interest in film is not simply down to nostalgia, but the fact that many photographers prefer the experience of film. The introduction of our Pro Film app addresses the needs of these photographers by giving them access to digital tools that enhance that experience” - Paul Davey, UK Marketing Manager, Imaging, Kodak Alaris Ltd

W

ith news coming into the team at In:Print about surges in sales of analogue photographic equipment, we were pleased to hear of developments coming from the global development team at Kodak Alaris to support the growing number of users out there. Kodak Alaris have announced that sales of their film rolls have grown by more than 5% worldwide between 2013-2015, and to encourage the further growth of the segment – whilst making life as simple as possible for both new adopters and brand loyal film photographers alike – the Kodak Professional Film App has been created. Functions within the new mobile application have been built to answer the often-asked questions that film photographers pose; such as what types of film are suitable for certain

environments; where to get hands on film in the first place and where, ultimately, to get their film developed once shot, to name a few. In each section within the app, there are examples of each style of photography, along with examples of what other photographers have achieved using Kodak Professional film. Paul Davey, UK Marketing Manager, Imaging, Kodak Alaris Ltd explains: “The growing interest in film is not simply down to nostalgia, but the fact that many photographers prefer the experience of film. The introduction of our Pro Film app addresses the needs of these photographers by giving them access to digital tools that enhance that experience.” Over the years, the team at Kodak Alaris has met and worked with a vast range of incredibly talented photographers who have

Photographers each have a personal reason for working with the medium, be that the unmatched look and feel, the experience, the richness that differentiates their work in what is a hugely competitive market. Contained within their creative passion is a curiosity and an unquestionable commitment to film and this is largely what has led to the rise of Kodak Professional film roll sales, with both colour negative and black & white film growing more than 5% worldwide in just a couple of years. For recent devotees and seasoned veterans alike, Kodak Alaris have created the free Film App to feed into that curiosity with the answers to questions, such as: ‘what kind of film should I use for fast action?’ or ‘where can I buy Kodak Professional

Films such as TRI-X, PORTRA, T-MAX, EKTAR)?’ and ‘where can I get my film developed?’ Clearly, the last topic in the above list is of paramount importance to dealers working within the existing Kodak Express network, and indeed for those thinking about taking advantage in the rejuvenation of film development demand. The ‘locate’ function that has been built into the app serves a silent salesman for the dealer channel, directing photographers in store for products and services that would otherwise need to be ‘googled’ or discovered through word-ofmouth.

“Wherever the user is in the world, they have access to the global network of authorised Kodak Professional film stockists with incredible ease” Using the mobile app, the user not only has instant access to valuable advice and direction but also has a dealer network map that spans a full 200-mile radius. This means that ultimately, wherever they are in the world, the user can access the global network of authorised Kodak Professional film stockists with incredible ease. First introduced on the Apple iOS platform for iPhones, the team at Kodak Alaris are now bringing the same experience to iPad and ANDROID users, along with a freshly updated version for iPhones. For ANDROID users, the app is now available in the Google Play Store. For iPhone & iPad visit the Apple App store, and search for the Kodak Professional Film App.

BOOK OF THE MONTHCOMPETITION PIXEL PHOTOGRAPHY

FUJIFILM

SPONSOR THE 2016 PIXEL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION Fujifilm UK’s Photo Imaging Group Marketing Manager, Peter Wigington

AFTER ANNOUNCING OUR INAUGURAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION IN OUR PREVIOUS EDITION, THE ENTRIES ARE ALREADY COMING IN THICK AND FAST. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE MISSED THE NEWS ELSEWHERE, WE ARE VERY PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT FUJIFILM IS OUR HEADLINE SPONSOR FOR THE 2016 COMPETITION

T

he perfect match for the competition, Fujifilm have sponsored each of the five categories. Pixel Ed, Simon Skinner caught up with Peter Wigington to ask his thoughts on the partnership. Simon Skinner: Hi Peter. Firstly, a big thank you to Fujifilm for supporting the first ever Pixel Photography Competition. Can you tell us about your decision to become the sole partner? Peter Wigington: It’s really quite simple. Fujifilm is all about the printed image and any initiative that encourages photos to be printed and shared is one that we want to be involved with. SS: Can you confirm details of the prizes that you are offering for the winner of each category? PW: With pleasure; we will be offering the winner of each category a 24”x 36” print of their winning image, made at one of the

20 www.pixel.co.uk

prestigious London labs. We’ll invite them to the lab for a tour and to see their own print being made. The print will then be presented to them along with their award at the Pixel Trade Awards ceremony in London on the 2nd December.

PW: I’m very happy to join you on the judging panel.

SS: So to clarify, the winners will be invited to attend the whole evening with a plus 1, consisting of Champagne Reception, three-course dinner with wine, water, coffee and petit fours. They will be able to bring their partner (or friend) along for the evening and will be offered accommodation at the Grange City Hotel, where the event is held (behind the Tower of London), in either a double or twin room, with breakfast included for the morning of the 3rd December.

PW: We talk about the importance of printing images all the time. For those people at the retail end, the sharp end, the ones that talk to the consumer of our product every day; for them to feel the joy of first taking, then printing, then sharing that special image is something they can relate back first hand to those same customers with pride and inspire them to do the same.

PW: Correct.

To submit your entries for the competition and if you are not already subscribed, you will need to register at pixel.co.uk, or feel free to call on 01323 819007 and ask for the Pixel team. Please refer to page 5 for all submission dates and details.

SS: Will you be joining Clive Booth and myself on the judging panel, or will you be putting forward an alternative Fujifilm representative?

SS: Peter, why is it important for the trade to engage with this, the first (ever, to our knowledge) trade-only photo competition?

SS: Reason enough by any standards. Peter, thank you once more and I’m looking forward to our meetings to plough through the entries!

IN:PRINT POPS IN TO HAHNEMUHLE’S POP-UP SHOP

WITH MANY BRANDS TAKING THEIR MESSAGES DIRECTLY TO THE PUBLIC IN RECENT TIMES WITH ROADSHOWS, DEALER EVENTS AND FESTIVAL APPEARANCES ABOUND - HAHNEMUHLE ENTER THE FRAY WITH THEIR VERY OWN POP-UP SHOP IN LONDON’S TRENDY EAST END There have been a number of brand-led events announced lately, in what seems to be a growing trend of presenting product ranges and offering advice directly to the end user. All of this is of course great news for the dealer channel as it demonstrates huge support, potentially driving a fresh audience in store to convert into future loyal customers. With over 400 years of experience behind them and an impressive array of products, Hahnemuhle are a company well adept in marketing themselves, so Pixel popped along to their first pop-up store (which was built for just one week in London’s Old Street Station) and caught up with Simon Waller, Managing Director, and Heidi Wilson, PR and Marketing

24 www.pixel.co.uk

Manager, at Hahnemuhle UK to find out what’s behind their new project. Simon Skinner: Hi Simon, Can you tell us a bit about what has led to the pop-up shop project? Simon Waller: As a company, we saw that there were many people who knew our brand and were aware of some of our products. However there were many that only knew about a handful of our papers, be it the traditional artist papers or our digital printing

papers. By having our own shop, we are able to display our ranges and have samples for people to try. Paper is such a diverse material with many grades, surface textures and tones, so allowing people to touch and feel the varieties allows them to make a much more informed choice when presenting their artwork or photography. SS: What are your main objectives with the project?

in print

Old Street Crowd

SW: To educate people in the different varieties of paper that we produce. It was also geared towards educating the stores in our products. With such a large range it is difficult to take these to the stores to show them off. Also, by having a testing area in the pop-up store, artists and retailers can experience the haptics of the papers and the way they perform with different techniques. The store has been a great success. All of the hard work and planning from the UK team has really paid off. SS: Heidi, how have you found organising the week in Old St Station and who else in the team has been involved? Heidi Wilson: Because this is the first store and we have never done anything like this before it’s been incredibly daunting and scary, but exciting at the same time. It’s amazing though to see a casual idea finally come together and actually be realised. We’ve learnt there is so much to consider in the planning stages, simple things such as location are still difficult decisions to make. All of Hahnemühle UK’s colleagues have been involved in the planning stages and it’s been great to be able to bounce ideas between us all. We were conscious to make this more of an ‘event’ than just a shop and it’s been wonderful to share ideas and alter and change them along the way. It’s been a massive learning curve but we have all definitely learnt from this experience and I’m sure it will help us make the next ones even more of a success! We are all incredibly proud of each other and the hard work that has gone into the store. We’re now really excited to start planning the next few stores!

SS: Where do you see this project heading in the future? HW: We would love to be able to roll these stores out in various locations across the UK and Ireland. As soon as the London store was announced we had requests for a store in Ireland, the North West and the South Coast. SS: OK, well be sure to keep us posted so that we can let people know.

“We are all incredibly proud of each other and the hard work that has gone into the store. We’re now really excited to start planning the next few stores” - Heidi Wilson, PR and Marketing Manager, at Hahnemuhle UK
