UK Online Sales Topped £100 Billion in 2014 New figures show that online sales grew by 14% in 2014 compared to the previous year, totalling at £104 billion. The IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index said this was the first time online spending has ever broken the £100 billion barrier. Now, the analyst has forecasted a further growth of 12% in 2015, estimating a total spend of £116 billion by December. Christmas spending certainly gave the totals a boost last year, with shoppers spending up to £21.6 billion on gifts and bargains in the eight weeks to 27 December. However, sales growth yearon-year for this period was just 5%, the lowest ever recorded on the Index. Adgild Hop, principal head of retail consulting at Capgemini, said: “Black Friday was unquestionably a success for the value-seeking consumer, but for retailers themselves, its success is not quite as clear. As the Index reveals, spending was brought forward a month earlier, at much lower margins for retailers, as a result of the discounts available to customers in November.”
