The magazine
At wallpaperdirect we simply love wallpaper and paint as they are the key to transforming our lives, and something we can do over and over again. Whether it is a coat of paint for some old furniture, a new statement wall in our living room or a whole new scheme, decorating is exciting! As the winter approaches and we see days shortening, we hope that we can enjoy some sunny autumnal days as we start to cosy up with our families and bring some of those outside colours into our home. A new decorating project is always fun to undertake and the choosing can be the best bit, though sometimes can be daunting with so much choice. We can take the pain out of the search with our brand, price, colour, style menu along with easy sampling, to help you get the perfect result. The website will be getting a refresh in the autumn so keep your eyes open for the new look and do tell us what you think. We hope you will like it - it will certainly make choosing even easier on tablets and phones, which we know half of our customers use. If you are lucky enough to be able to use a professional decorator then we can get the paint and paper delivered to you or a branch of Brewers for collection, ready for them to start work. PERFECT PINKS Little Greene launches a capsule collection of perfect pinks, marking Breast Cancer Awareness month - Oct 2016
L
ittle Greene are following the success of their recent Grey and Blue collections with a launch this Autumn of a delightful capsule collection of pink colours. The ‘Pink’ paint collection comprises eight related pink shades and provides a delicious choice from soft delicate tones associated with femininity and sensitivity to bolder, seductive hues. Designed to work harmoniously together and with other Little Greene paint shades,
these versatile pinks include seven new colours and one from the existing colourcard. The special palette celebrates Little Greene’s long-standing support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, held every October, during which 15p from every can of paint sold is donated to a Breast Cancer Charity. For 2016, Little Greene’s chosen charity will once again be Breast Cancer Haven, the only national breast cancer charity that
provides one-to-one support to improve the quality of life of anyone affected by breast cancer. The limited edition colourcard will be available until next January, after which many of the shades will be incorporated into the updated Colours of England colourcard, due to be launched in Spring 2017. links, ‘Pink’ has its roots in history. During the Renaissance period, Pink was used in paintings for the flesh colour of the human body, the ‘skin’ colour being created from a combination of two pigments – ‘Sinopia’, also known as Venetian Red, and Lime White. Whilst pink colours had been used in artists’ work for centuries, it was only during the 18th Century that pinks became popular in fashionable clothing and porcelain, with architecture following across Europe soon afterwards. The name ‘pink’ derived from the flower of the same name and was adopted in the late 17th Century (before this time the word was also applied to shades of yellow!). Pink fell out of fashion in the 19th Century and only with the introduction of lightfast chemical dyes in the 20th Century creating bolder, brighter and more powerful pinks was there a resurgence in popularity. It was in the 1940s that pink truly became associated with girls; before that, pink had been for boys too. Often used to signify both femininity and sexual empowerment by and for women, pink demonstrates outer beauty and inner strength: nowadays, pink represents strength within women and, as such, is the colour many breast cancer charities have used to represent their brand. Why do you recommend using a lining paper, my walls are very smooth? Mark, Bournemouth Firstly although we would love to come and see your walls, we sadly can’t and so we always recommend lining walls first; Melanie Adams always refers to it as the underwear for wallpaper. The lining paper will give a good even base to hang your beautiful new wallpaper on and will also highlight any flaws in the surface: perhaps a dark paint patch which shows through slightly, or an uneven repair. If this does happen, you can then cross line, which means you hang another layer of lining paper in the opposite direction, ie horizontally. And, secondly, it allows you to practise your paper hanging skills, check that you have ordered sufficient paper and be ready to hang your new wallpaper - see videos on our website www.wallpaperdirect.com

What is ‘paste the wall’? Is it the same as non-woven and is it really easier to use then normal wallpaper? Liz, Birmingham Paste-the-wall and non-woven are two terms for the same thing: a wallcovering which does not require pasting and leaving to expand before it is hung on your wall. You can paste the wall and apply the wallcovering direct from the roll or you can cut the length, paste it and then hang it straight away. The wallpaper does not expand because it has fibres in the pulp to keep it stable. As you do not need to wait for the product to soak, it can be quicker to hang, but also it is easier for the inexperienced decorator to match the edges together more successfully on first attempt.
Why do you recommend that we order a sample first? They are only A4 size. Jane, Putney Just as we would recommend that you use a sample pot of paint, to check you have the right colour, we would recommend that you order a sample of the wallpaper first. This is so that you can see the true colour. Unfortunately, different computer and mobile screens have different display settings and colours can vary. The sample is so that you can check the main colour and the texture of the product, not to see the whole design. The roomsets on our website and the screen background allow you to see how the pattern repeats and looks against a variety of rooms and setting.
