Cole & Son Launching an amazing new collection BOTANICAL ~Botanica~
4
Selling so many brands makes our job really interesting and, as you would expect we each have our own favourites. For me the metallic effects are beautiful and I am busy planning my next decorating fix! For some in the team it is the animal papers: with flamingos and rabbits at the top of the list, and for others it is bright, bold florals. We share our decorating experiences and plans, as we always seem to have a project on the go. Sometimes just tidying a space can inspire a fresh coat of paint and wallpaper – paste the wall usually wins for ease of use. Watching trends develop over the year we have seen the rise of all things green and leafy, particularly cactus and cheeseplant leaf designs, which are so uplifting. Everyone should have a room to lift their spirits; to decorate with a sense of fun, whether it’s the downstairs cloakroom, the kitchen, a bedroom or living room. AUTU MN/W
We know that wallpaper makes us happy – we hope you enjoy our highlights in this season’s magazine.

Cole & Son have been at the forefront of wallpaper design for many years and are credited by many as introducing us to the concept of feature walls – and don’t we just love a feature wall here at wallpaperdirect! But there is more to their story than just their strikingly bold iconic designs, like Woods, Cow Parsley, Flamingos and others; they have also recently had guest designers like Martyn Lawrence Bullard and access to the archives of Fornasetti, creating some stunning contemporary designs. As well as for years being able to access their own amazing archive of classic damasks and geometric designs and florals. And it is florals, that they have revisited this year with the new BOTANICAL ~Botanica~ collection giving us a season by season transition through flowers and leaves. Inspired by both the formality of the cultivated garden and the freedom of wild flower and woodlands this is a collection for both feature walls and all four walls and suitable for any room in your home. The new Allium design is simply breath-taking and we love the bold purple colouring in this design. They have taken a traditional floral motif and made it something really contemporary by adding a strong geometric pattern to the flowers. This colourway of Violet and Mulberry on Heather maybe a little too bold for some but there are other colour combinations available at wallpaperdirect and a wide range of other florals in this collection including Lilac, Rose, Sweet Pea, Bluebell and Wisteria. The collection also has a range of beautiful lush, leaf and tree designs with Maidenhair, Fern, Topiary and Woodland designs, with the Fern design (shown overleaf) in particular giving a fresh, cool new twist to the current jungle leaf trend, which we are seeing a lot of in our office.

W A L L P A P E R D I R E C T. C O M
Creating the illusion of a textured brick wall we have loved this trend, which has remained a popular wallpaper design, continuing to be in our top 10 sellers consistently throughout the year. The versatility of the design and the impact it gives, makes it a great option for a whole room as well as a feature wall. At its simplest the plain white brick effect really gives the illusion of a brick wall, uncomplicated to live with, it works as a wonderful backdrop to your collections of art, curios, ornaments and statement furniture. The vinyl paste the wall brick is also very easy to hang and very durable for those with children or high traffic areas. It gives the illusion of City style and Loft living; if you are not lucky enough to live in a New York loft apartment, you can still get the look with a good brick effect wallpaper. With prices starting from £8.99 there is no end to the possibilities. Modern country can also be embraced with a range of distressed brick effects. As shown with this beautiful ‘Vintage Brick’ design from Albany which is available in a white/grey and a pink/grey version (as shown here) when the red brick is showing through the old white paint to give a soft pink effect and is perfect for kitchen and utility rooms. Alternatively use a brick effect with a pattern already created on top which gives a fun, ‘Urban’ look for you to enhance with your own accessories – perfect for teenage rooms where posters and pieces of artwork look really good. Have fun with this trend and make it your own. New for Autumn 2018 Zardozi Wallpapers Inspired by the pioneering travels of the extraordinary 19th century explorer Isabella Bird, the Zardozi wallpapers (complemented by the Jaipur Rose fabric collection) bring us glamour, sophistication and exoticism ranging from the Persian shores and Indian landscapes through Europe to the Americas. The new and mysterious things she found, people she met and recorded in her letters, fascinated a delightfully contemporary woman, Isabella Bird. It is this passion which is reflected in the diverse elements of this new collection.

And it is this textural feel and attention to fine detail that is referenced in the strikingly bold geometric patterns in this collection: the large scale Hexagonal shapes of ‘Zardozi‘; the angular interlocking diamonds shapes of ‘Kappazuri’ and the new colourings of the oriental trellis ‘Rheinsberg’ with complementing and contrasting textural plains: ‘Shirakawa’ and ‘Ernani’.
Rich with detail the Zardozi wallpaper collection embraces a bold, dynamic palette of colours: golden ochre, mustard

Modern Miami Wonderful clashing colours giving life and energy in your home with rich green leaves, bright flowers, cocktails, flamingos, fun and sunshine.
Wallpaper: Barneby Gates, Watermelon, £87 per roll
Wallpaper: Matthew Williamson, Arini, £107 per roll
Miami has been shaped by the influences of Cuba, which are reflected in the use of colour in the homes, shops and hotels alongside the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay to Miami Beach. The glamorous neighbourhood is famed for its colourful buildings inside and out and this trend allows you to bring that feeling into your home. Spotting a wild flamingo in Miami is rare but the colours of these wallcoverings are just perfect to remind us of these beautiful birds and sunshine holidays all years round. Our Albany Flamingo wallpaper has been such a hit worldwide, we have loved our customers sharing their images on our social media – from bedrooms, bathrooms and even night clubs our flamingo is a talking point. Using wallpaper on four walls, with elegant green foliage plants, and a piece of Lloyd loom style furniture is just stunning giving a tropical uplifting feel, but if that is a little too wild for your taste, you could tame it by wallpapering just a feature wall and ground it in your room by adding splashes of the colour in accessories such as cushions and lighting liberally placed around the room. Be brave and allow your imagination to run wild and you will find it is not difficult to create a cohesive and stunning look any designer would be proud of, and certainly something to share with your friends with a cool cocktail or two.

The Sanderson Paint Story In 1900 Arthur Sanderson introduced a small collection of paints to complement his wallpaper and fabric collections. Now, more than a century later, Sanderson have 154 colours in a selection of finishes that can be used throughout the home. From traditional to contemporary interiors, this timeless palette has been designed for homes where style matters. This year’s relaunch sees the introduction of 50 new paint colours to augment the 154 Colour paint chart. Rebecca Craig, design manager at the Sanderson studio tells us what’s new. “We have updated our colour range and added 50 new shades to complement our most recent collections and

hero designs (Woodland Walk, Waterperry, Art of the Garden, Embleton Bay, Chiswick Grove and Elysian). The colours were all mixed and painted by hand in the studio allowing us to create our own unique palette. Key changes include freshening up the yellows and greens to link in with our Botanical ranges, added in a selection of greys and teal shades, more coastal blues and sophisticated floral shades. This range offers something for everyone from modern brights through to chalky mineral shades, inspired by nature and perfect for family living.” All the Sanderson paints are available from Designerpaint. com and branches of Brewers where professional decorators have enjoyed using this original designer paint range for its quality and colour. Archive Trails II A beguiling compendium of archive floral wallpapers. Little Greene’s paint palette is well loved by designers and their wallpapers sit perfectly alongside to create the most beautiful of rooms. Their most recent wallpaper collection, ‘Archive Trails II’ features authentic archive wallpaper designs with adapted patterns and colour palettes to suit the modern interior. Following on from its highly successful predecessor ‘Archive Trails’ this sequel collection comprises patterns from precious remnants conserved by both English Heritage and Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery. Little Greene’s MD David Mottershead explains “From watching fragments of fragile, antique wallpapers come to life from the archives, journeying through the hands of the artist and, after an intricate process of research and re-colouring, to see them rolling off the printing press is akin to alchemy. Our rejuvenated, re-energised wallpapers – designed with today’s interiors in mind but with one foot still proudly rooted in heritage and tradition.” The collection draws inspiration from the early 18th to mid-20th centuries with some of the most popular designs include Loriini (c.1935) a wallpaper inspired by a 20th-century piece featuring Lory birds and oriental blossom. The exotic subject matter and almost symmetrical repeat are typical of 1930s design reflecting the aspirations of travel to distant lands.

The new
William Morris Pure North collection reflects one
of the many passions of his artistic life. Drawing on his archive designs, and re-coloured with Wintery tones which reflect the rugged landscape of Iceland this stunning collection has been created for today’s homes.
The Style Library team tell us that... “Realising a lifetime’s ambition, William Morris stepped off the steamship as it docked at Iceland’s southernmost shore. Around him, cobalt blue skies shook hands with distant snowcapped mountains and yellow horn poppies danced against the piercing wind. Taking shelter from the cold and fading light, Morris pulled out his diary and began to write; endless inspiration stretching out before him as if, an already full sketchbook. Accurate detail of landscape and colour blended, with intense and personal descriptions filling its pages, etched with emotion, appreciation and understanding. Charming and enthralling, the 1871 diary entries from William Morris’s Icelandic expedition have captured the hearts of the Morris and Co. design studio, resulting in a breath-taking collection comprising five printed fabrics, six embroideries, 12 weaves and 10 wallpaper designs. Well-loved archive designs have been carefully reworked to reflect the colours of Morris’s Icelandic Journal, with gentle mica finishes and metallic highlights sitting alongside fine embroidery juxtaposed with chunky textures. A neutral Pure Morris palette of White Clover, Stormy Grey, Flax and Linen - to name a few - is used throughout both collections, accented with subtle tones such as Horned Poppy, Faded Sea Pink and the dramatic Black Ink.” See all the Morris wallpaper collections on wallpaperdirect.com

Crafting new colours with With new colours launching in September, we’ve spoken to Farrow & Ball Head of Creative, Charlotte Cosby and Colour Curator, Joa Studholme to find out more about how they’ve been created.
Where do you both begin? The creation of our colours starts in the simplest of ways - at a kitchen table with paint filled ramekins which are mixed and remixed for weeks on end. They include trend led colours that feel relevant and will nourish the Charlotte Crosby contemporary home, existing shades that might need a very slight tweak for today’s market and finally, some of our most popular hues just beg to have lighter or darker accents. Next, it’s over to the paint experts in our Dorset laboratory, usually with up to six versions of the same colour. We carefully analyse every colour in our range of finishes and in varying light conditions until we are happy with the exact formulation and pigment levels throughout. 34
How do you gather your inspiration for colour stories and names? We hope our names will spark curiosity and intrigue, letting the imagination run wild trying to visualise the colour. Each story is meticulously researched, for example one of our oldest and most distinctive colours, Dead Salmon was originally used at Kedleston Hall in 1805. ‘Dead’ refers to the dead matt paint finish, and ‘Salmon’ to the colour. How do you keep the secret? During the development stage it can be agonisingly difficult! Excitement levels are high and we can’t wait to share them with the world. However, in the year between finalising our new hues and the closely guarded launch date they must be nurtured and protected. Our new colours become all the more special by being kept secret until the very last moment.

Discover the story behind Wallpaper Paint and wallpaper expert, Farrow & Ball, has been making wallpaper since the 1990s and their collection has been available to purchase through Brewers stores nationwide since 1998. Over the last twenty years the company has expanded its collection to include florals, stripes, geometrics, damasks and more. Every design is uniquely made using real Farrow & Ball richly pigmented paint, according to traditional block and trough printing methods to give a uniquely tactile finish, creating a seamless connection between paint and paper.
“The first step is to paint the ground (base) colour onto high quality paper. The paper is then either traditionally trough, roller or block printed to create richly textures patterns.
We asked Farrow & Ball what it takes to make their wallpaper, what makes it truly special?
Block printing is the original, traditional method of printing repeating patterns. “Larger scale damask and floral designs are printed using traditional flat bed block printed processes. Inspired by 18th century techniques, paint is applied to a beautifully etched surface through a trough and roller and the block is pressed onto the paper, just like a stamp. The block is then slowly raised and the paper moved forward for the next impression, which must be exactly aligned to create a seamless pattern.
Their creative team, led by Charlotte Cosby, explores their archive and creates the design then...
The process of roller block printing is an adaptation of flat bed block printing which is best suited to really

The striped and dragged papers are trough printed. Paint flows into the trough, through foam pads, and onto the paper to create the first layer. The paper is then oven dried and ready for the second stage. For a stripe, the second hue is poured through the next trough and onto individual
It is this attention to detail, and the handcrafted methods they use, which mean that each wallpaper is truly unique and that Farrow & Ball’s wallpapers are something to celebrate.

The use of green in homes is increasing as we love to bring the outside in and it works so well with wood floors and fresh white paint. Why do you recommend using a lining paper, my walls are very smooth? Mr Steele – Bristol
Firstly although we would love to come and see your walls, we sadly can’t and so we always recommend lining walls first. Melanie always refers to it as the underwear for wallpaper. And with prices starting from less than £4 for a double length roll, it really is not an expensive thing to do and could save you time and money in the long run. We always recommend that you prepare your walls Wallpaper: Albany, Mistral, £30 per roll thoroughly, this means checking for any flaws or marks and covering them appropriately. You can then line the walls to ensure an absolutely flawless surface for your wallpaper. Secondly, it allows you to practise your paper hanging skills, check that you have ordered sufficient paper and be ready to hang your new wallpaper. You can get great ‘paste the wall’ lining papers which are very easy to hang and make sure you use a strong adhesive such as Albany Super smooth as whether you are painting the paper or wallpapering over it, the strongest bond must be with the wall. If you are painting over we suggest Wallrock Smooth gives the best results.

Why do you recommend that we order a sample first? They are only A4 size. Karen - Liverpool
Wallpaper: Albany, Marblesque Geo, £14.50 per roll
Just as we would recommend that you use a sample pot of paint, to check you have the right colour, we would recommend that you order a sample of the wallpaper first. This is so that you can get an idea of the true colour and texture of the wallpaper. Unfortunately, different computer and mobile screens have different display settings and colours can vary an awful lot! The sample is so that you can check the main colour and the texture of the product, not necessarily to see the whole design. The roomsets on our website and the screen background allow you to see how the pattern repeats and looks against a variety of rooms and styles.

Metallics Let it shine...
One of our most popular new trends has been metallic wallpapers.
Wallpaper: Arthouse, Foil Honeycomb £22.99 per roll
Designs which shimmer and shine, seeming to create light on their own; and create drama in the smallest of rooms. Improvements in printing processes mean that these effects become ever more affordable and with prices starting from around £12 there is something to suit every budget. Metallic inks are notoriously difficult to photograph though, so please do take advantage of our free sample option, to get yourself a small piece to see how the metallic inks work in your home first. Often what looks grey on the screen is actually a beautiful foil or silver lustre effect. So embrace the light, and try adding one of the beautiful new metallic wallpapers, available on wallpaperdirect to your home. You may well be surprised by how much it transforms your room, lifting and lightening the interior.

Wallpaper for Kids of every age! Get the whole family involved in creating a room kids will love as much as you. Decorating a room for a child can be a challenge, but it needn’t be a chore. Whilst you may have certain colours and themes running throughout your home, a child’s room must be a haven, which will inspire their imagination and fire up their creativity. Whether it is playing in their room or settling down to sleep it should be a special place for them. Kids will frequently tell you their favourite colour, story

character, television programme, animal etc... they’ll also change their mind very quickly! Our little boy is obsessed with dinosaurs and it has been lovely to see his reaction to the Kerry Caffyn dinosaur paper we have put up for him. The joy on his face was fabulous to see. Fortunately new wallpaper is an effective and fairly inexpensive way of keeping up with their changing tastes.

Wallpaper: Hibou Home, Castles & Dragons, £59.95 per roll
Wallpaper: Majvillan, Dragon Sky, £72 per roll
Wallpaper: Kerry Caffyn, Dotty Dinosaurs, £28 per roll
This season’s trend: Dinosaurs and dragons! If they are old enough to give you a sensible (ish!) answer then by far the best thing is to ask them and involve them in the choice. When decorating give them actual jobs to do, perhaps involve older brothers and sisters too. Placing stickers, or painting an item of furniture is always fun, keeps them occupied and you can always tidy it up later. Use Rustoleum furniture paint, which is quick drying and a lovely chalky finish- there are loads of great colours to choose from on designerpaint.com.
We have wallpapers, to suit children of all ages! Nursery prints in bold colours make a fun statement and are perfect for rooms shared by children. We love this Kerry Caffyn paper where she has used the handprints of her own children to create a fantastic fun paper of birds. And don’t forget, designs created for children can also make fun designs in family rooms like kitchens, bringing a smile to your face every day.

Mid Century Flower Power A whole new generation are discovering their design inspiration from the middle of the last century when colour and pattern were in abundance. Looking back for design inspiration is a well-versed tradition, as each generation looks back with fresh eyes on what their parents or grandparents grew up with. In the 21st century we have fallen in love again, with the designs and trends from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Simple geometrics and clean floral shapes make these wallpapers easy to live

with and they complement, furniture and soft furnishing from the same era. There were lots of homes built in these periods, which have been latterly decorated in chintz or just plain paint, but going back to the date of the architecture and reinstating these modern designs will sit perfectly with these spaces giving them a new look and feel for now. Mix and match new with old and have fun with this style.
