he North East 250 has been developed by local businessman Guy Macpherson-Grant. His family has had roots in Speyside since the 16th century. Passionate about the North East of Scotland, Guy is confident that the North East 250 will encourage more people to visit the region and enjoy everything it has to offer. Aberdeen International Airport and Speyside Gardens. This new route has really catapulted the North of Scotland onto the international stage. 'We believe, and indeed statistics show, that tourism interest in Scotland has never been higher.' says Guy, 'the North East of Scotland is relatively untapped in terms of its potential as a tourism destination and the North East 250 will realise that potential.' Whilst it is true that the North East 250 is primarily a road 7

SPEYSIDE COOPERAGE

Blackened and

Friday 26th January 2018 was an ordinary day for most of us but for one young man it became a very significant day indeed.

R

eece Cooper joined the Speyside Cooperage at the age of 16 and on Friday 26th January he completed his four years of apprenticeship – a momentous day in more ways than one, for he was about to go through the rite of passage known as ‘a blackening’. This is quite a rare thing to witness and the invitation to be present at the event was an honour indeed. Reece knew full well that he would have to go through the time-honoured ritual; his elder brother Kyle had been through

16

of an organised VIP tour, complete with guide. It takes a fair amount of organisation to orchestrate a blackening. Reece knew that it was going to happen but he had no idea at which point it would happen. His apprehension must have grown with every passing moment. We, as invitees, could see the men start to bring the tins of the awful mixture of treacle, molasses and who knows what else into the cooperage, but Reece worked on, no doubt with his nerves jangling. The clock ticked. Quietly and without drawing attention to the fact, the external doors were closed, shutting off all the escape routes. The men advanced on Reece round about 3pm, coming at him from all angles. He took off, with the advantage of youth on his side, but he was no match for the muscular coopers who picked him up and carried him to the blackening area of the cooperage floor. His outer clothes were removed, not forcefully but not too gently either, and he was left in his underclothes to await his fate. Tins of a ghastly looking inky black mixture were unceremoniously dumped all over his body and worked into his hair, normally his pride and joy, I’m told – nowhere was spared. After the goo came the flour and then the feathers. As if this was not enough, he was placed inside one of the last barrels made on the day and rolled around the cooperage. Once the rolling ceased, Reece emerged from his barrel looking like a newly-fledged young bird, covered head to toe in feathers. He had started his apprenticeship as a teenager of 16 and was now, at age 20, one of the men on the cooperage

feathered it beforehand at the end of his apprenticeship and most probably had briefed his brother as to what to expect. Who knows but that he might just have embroidered things a little, for maximum effect. The invited guests were advised to arrive round about 2.30pm and were to report to the Visitor Centre reception, where we were each kitted out with hi-viz jackets and a pair of safety glasses. To present an air of normality to the men in the cooperage we were to give the impression that we were part

floor. Most of his family watched from the safety of the viewing gallery, but one was slightly closer and a bit more involved. Kyle, Reece’s older brother, who went through his own initiation a couple of years ago appeared happy to fully participate. Soft drinks, beers or a dram followed for the coopers. We left the men to enjoy the remainder of their afternoon and to clap their newest recruit on the back and also perhaps to reminisce on the day that they all had gone through this very same rite of passage. 17

OUT & ABOUT

Pictures by Mike Rae

Roe deer, Capreolus capreolus, are among the most enchanting and numerous of all Scotland’s deer and are widespread throughout Britain.

scottish b 18

Roe are the only deer, along with the larger 'Monarch of the Glen' Red Deer, that are natural to the British Isles. All the others; Sika, Fallow, Muntjac and Chinese Water deer were introduced. Roe can often be spotted from the car or on foot. They are extremely sensitive and alert so best observed through binoculars. Pictures by Mike Rae

R

oe deer became largely extinct in the 1700s through over hunting and were only later reintroduced. Before 1960 they were treated as vermin owing to the damage they cause to young trees. Unlike other deer, they do not live in herds, but are most often seen as solitary individuals or as a family group of a mother and her offspring.

DID YOU KNOW... Bambi the deer, from the children’s books by Felix Salten, was a roe deer. But the Bambi in the Walt Disney films is a Whitetailed Deer which would be more familiar to American film goers.

OUT & ABOUT

The rut comes in late July and August

Females are called does and males bucks. Baby deer are kids. The buck's antlers are shed from October to January, and the new pair, which begins to grow immediately are covered in 'velvet', furred skin that supplies blood to the growing antlers. The doe does not grow antlers. In Scotland it is estimated there is probably one Roe deer per square kilometre – to the point they are often considered to be pests. Roe are enchanting animals, but can cause serious damage to trees and crops and are increasingly involved in road accidents. Roe, which live as small territorial family groups, are woodland animals. They are most easily spotted at dawn and dusk feeding on the edge of stubble fields or woodland clearings. They are now seen in semi urban parks and on golf courses, and even on the open hill along with Red deer. Roe can produce one or two ‘kids’ in May/June. Bucks have a pair of single spiky antlers up to 9inches (22.9cm) long. The meat is often as tender as prime lamb. 'Stalking' deer 20

with a rifle for sport and eating is particularly popular among European visitors to Scotland. Habitat Roe are mainly woodland deer, but in recent years the rise in numbers has led them to colonising more open areas such as rank heather, scrub and agricultural ground. Breeding The mating season, known as the rut, comes in late July and August. There is a delay in the implantation of the fertilised egg in the female. This is believed to be nature’s way of postponing birth until favourable conditions. Twins are common and there are sometimes triplets. Newly born young can sometimes be seen lying among bracken, bramble or grasses. They have not been abandoned but left, camouflaged by their spotted coats. The doe will be close by and will return to suckle them.

About Mike Rae Mike is passionate and enthusiastic about life, the environment and wildlife. He has taken photographs in the UK and round the world. Many of Mike’s images have been published in magazines, on television and websites and in books - including BBC Wildlife Magazine and British Trust for Ornithology. His images have also been shortlisted in competitions such as the Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year and The British Wildlife Photography Awards.

Diet Roe deer are herbivores and graze all types of ground vegetation. They also browse shrub layers in a wood, and the growing shoots and leaves of holly and beech trees. Threats Natural predators, such as bears, lynx and wolves, are now extinct in Britain. When deer numbers become too great for their habitat to support them, they can have a detrimental impact on plant species diversity and can cause damage to agriculture and forestry. They can also suffer from sickness and disease. Today, Forestry Commission wildlife rangers and landowners are managing deer populations sensitively and humanely. But plans to reintroduce lynx in wild areas of woodland could help reduce numbers naturally.

orld War One, November 1917. The English Channel is an exposed and vulnerable stretch of water, with German submarines an everpresent danger. In order to combat the threat of the submarines, the navy is using seaplanes to search the waters in order to pinpoint the position of enemy submarines. The seaplanes were two-men machines, with open cockpits and none of the technology that is prevalent today. The planes were lowered by crane over the side of the ship and, at the end of their flight, they would land next to the ship and be raised back on deck. The two men, a pilot and an observer, braved the elements and flew “on a wing and a prayer. They had no means of communication with their ship and for each foray over the channel would be alone for roughly six hours. mission to search the channel. Instead of returning safely to the ship, something happened and Seaplane 9047 ended up in the cold waters in the middle of the channel, about 45 miles due south of Dartmouth. Both men survived the impact and clung to the upturned floats, desperately hoping for rescue. Back on HMS Riviera, there being no sign of Seaplane 9047 after six hours, the two men were posted as’ missing’. At about the same time as Seaplane 9047 crashed, HMS Kinaldie, with skipper John Campbell RNR, was leaving Falmouth with orders to escort a convoy of schooners as far as the Heaux Light on the Brittany coast, 150 miles away. Skipper Campbell was an experienced seaman who understood weather conditions and wind directions and the effect that they would have on a convoy of schooners. Ever vigilant, he shepherded his schooners towards their destination. The afternoon’s sailing passed without incident but, during the night, the wind changed direction. During the 18 hours or so that they had been clinging onto the wreckage, Stallard and Rogers had had no sleep, their strength must have started to fade and hope of a rescue must have dwindled with each passing hour. That very morning – Monday 12th November 1917 – Skipper Campbell had some problems with one of the schooners, which had broken adrift from the convoy. All attempts to fix up a tow line had failed and they were forced to continue their journey without her, sailing off into a second night. Stallard and Rogers had spent all day clinging to the remains of the seaplane: Stallard’s hands and feet were giving cause for concern and he was exhausted and somehow managed to keep going due to the support of

his colleague who, thankfully, was bearing up rather better. The dawn of Tuesday 13th broke, bringing with it another complication – another schooner had become detached from the convoy during the night and Skipper Campbell had altered course to go to her assistance. It was during this time that the gunner on HMT Kinaldie spotted a small dark object in the water. Thinking that it might be an enemy submarine, course was again altered and guns were loaded and trained. On getting closer, it was obvious that there were two men in the water – but this could easily have been an enemy ruse – and it was only when the distance was reduced to roughly two hundred feet that it became evident that what they were seeing were the two men and the remains of a seaplane, floating upside down. The two rescued men were taken on board and cared for. Rogers and Stallard had been in the water for 43 hours and it would be another 9 hours before HMT Kinaldie came alongside HMS Riviera in Dartmouth harbour. Observer Rogers seemed to recover quite quickly from the ordeal but Pilot Stallard endured a long recovery and spent several weeks in hospital. Observer Rogers managed to get home to his parents in London over Christmas. On the 1st January 1918, his mother sat down and wrote a letter to the man who had saved her son, expressing her heartfelt thanks and also passing on her son’s wishes to be remembered to his rescuer. Letters were exchanged between Skipper Campbell and Observer Rogers in early 1918 but it was not until 35

years later, when Skipper Campbell had retired, that the link was re-established. John Campbell was reading an article in a magazine called ”Sea Breezes” and he thought that he recognised the author of the article as being one of the men he had rescued from the stricken seaplane. He wrote to the magazine and the reply he received, dated 23rd September 1953, confirmed that the author was indeed Observer Rogers, now living in Burnham-On-Crouch in Essex. He had remained in the Service and after 32 years of RNR, RN and RAF had reached the rank of Air Commodore. For two of the men involved, the circle had been completed – Campbell and Rogers were connected again through a chance reading of an article in a magazine but, unfortunately, nothing is known of Pilot Stallard. We can only hope that he made a full recovery after his hospitalisation. The final link in this story ends in Elgin, where Skipper John Campbell’s great grandson lives. He still has all the original letters that were written between the two men, together with the report written in 1917 by Skipper Campbell to the Commanding Officer of the HMS Riviera and the Roll of Honour dated 22nd November 1917, which shows the two men, Stallard and Rogers, as reported missing. Happily, this was not the case - but there were many others who were not as fortunate. 25

HUNTLY AUDAX

Room Huntly Development Trust’s annual Room to Ride takes place on Saturday 14th April and offers the participants four distance routes, over 50km, 100km, 160km and 200km

C

ycle through Huntly, to Banff, Cullen up to Keith then the Cabrach, Alford, Clatt and back to Huntly. The Huntly Audax is not a race, people ride them more in the spirit of an event like the London Marathon, with everyone riding to their own limitations - the primary objective being to just 'get round'. This event will suit everyone, clubmen, time-trialists, recreational riders, cycle-tourists, 'born again' cyclists, young and old, male and female. And you'll see 26

all sorts of machines - bikes, tandems, trikes, recumbents, and occasionally even stranger things... The routes feature a few main roads but a lot of quiet, scenic minor ones. Many parts are hilly, some extremely hilly, and even the flatter parts usually have one or two challenging climbs. Stop-off for the quality of home-cooked food and tender loving care along

For more details about this event, whether you wish to participate as a rider or as a valued volunteer on the sidelines, please contact Dave Simpson, either through the Huntly and District Development Trust’s website: www.huntlydevelopmenttrust.org or email: Dave.simpson@Huntly.net or on 01466 799416

Saturday 14th April the way. But come prepared as self-sufficiency is a highlyregarded quality. There are maximum and minimum time limits, which are designed to suit everyone from the fittest of recreational riders, to more occasional riders who have plenty of determination. Each rider carries a 'brevet card' which is stamped at intermediate checkpoints and at the finish. This is later returned as a certificate of their achievement. The success rate on these events is very high - only about 10 per cent fail to finish. So, go on, have a go... Routes can be downloaded from www.huntlydevelopmenttrust.org

SCULPTURE Keith is justifiably proud to have been awarded the accolade of First Scots Toun and, as part of their ongoing commitment to the town, the Regeneration Partnership felt that the creation of a striking piece of public art conveying that important fact would make a bold statement regarding the town’s linguistic confidence.

KEELEY & KELLAS

T

he Regeneration Partnership in Keith has invited proposals for the creation of a permanent sculpture which will spark the imagination of those who live, work and visit this area. Designs for the proposed artwork have to convey the importance of the Scots language – past, present and future, and will have to appeal to both

KEELEY & KELLAS

A permanent locals and visitors alike. Its aim is to engage, educate, excite and intrigue the public, to celebrate Scots within the context of Keith’s linguistic heritage and will have to fit sympathetically into the location. The work should convey two powerful messages, inasmuch as the future of the Scots language depends on the education of our children and that Robert Burns DAVID ANNAND

28

was instrumental in saving the Scots language in the Eighteenth century. The artwork should be physical in appearance, rather than abstract and, as it would be replacing the existing bench, at the bottom of Mid St, would have to double as a seat for use by the public. With its prominent position at the road end immediately in front of the church, the new sculpture will provide a photo opportunity for visitors. From the many designs submitted, three artists have been shortlisted: Stuart Murdoch, Speyside; David Annand, Cupar and Bibo Keely and Neil Kellas, Aberdeen (working in partnership). They will now go head to head. All three have met the criteria set down by the partnership, viz: original and creative approaches, imaginative use of high-quality material and sympathy with the environment. All three entries will be made up into maquettes and these will be put on show in the Pop Up shop in Mid St week commencing 26th March to allow the public to view and vote on their favourite. Whichever entry is the final choice, it is sure to become a talking point and will be one more step forward in the regeneration of Keith.

DAVID ANNAND

benchmark STUART MURDOCH 'I have lived in the area for nine years. Originally from Deeside, I grew up with my parents and grandparents speaking the tongue and my great uncle, Sandy Michie, was a well-known Doric performer, touring the North East with tales, stories, jokes and songs.'

DAVID ANNAND 'My parents were born in Keith, went to school there and I often visited my grandparents and relatives after we moved to Insch. I’m looking forward to coming back and researching my roots in March. This project sounds great and will add value to Keith’s exciting regeneration. BIBO KEELEY & NEIL KELLAS Bibo: 'I was attracted to this project because, as a native of Germany who has lived in the North East of Scotland for nearly ten years, I enjoy hearing the local dialects which seem to link directly to the language of Burns.' Neil: 'I grew up in the North-East of Scotland which holds a deep affinity with the environment that surrounds me. My work takes its influences from the rugged coastal shoreline and vast landscapes of the area. 29

DEFIBS

Keeping hearts beating Statistics say that annually, approx 9,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) to which the Scottish Ambulance Service are called out. Of these, only 3,000 result in a resuscitation attempt and only six per cent of these will survive to a hospital discharge. Two charities in Moray - Keiran's Legacy and Defibs for Moray are doing their bit by getting more defibrillators out into the community...

DEFIBS FOR MORAY In February last year, Ken Glass was effectively dead for nearly 20 minutes after suffering an OHCA. He survived thanks to the quick actions of his friend Dave Chapman who kept him alive until the ambulance arrived. Ken, a Dentist in Forres, is now leading a campaign to get more public access defibrillators (PADs) into the Moray community initially, and help spread the word about the importance of life-saving 30

training and education as far as possible. In February last year, Ken was playing a friendly football match. During the game, he headed the ball and immediately felt concussed something that had happened to him before. He thought it best to have it checked out at A&E and asked his friend Dave to drive him. In the car Dave asked Ken questions to try to assess the state of his head injury, all seemed fine but

KEIRAN"S LEGACY

only five minutes into the journey, Ken’s heart stopped with no warning, no pains, nothing. Ken remembers nothing from this point on... Dave, who is the supervisor at the local swimming pool and thankfully up-to-date with his CPR training, knew what to do. He dragged Ken out of the car and started administering CPR while phoning 999. From Ken’s heart stopping to the ambulance arriving was 19 minutes. They gave Ken five shocks on the ground and were unable to achieve ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation). It was only on the seventh attempt, ROSC was finally achieved. Thankfully Ken has made a full recovery. Ken has met with community groups to support his campaign ‘Defibs For Moray’. The group has managed to install four PADs in the area so far. More groups are applying for funding and the hope is that they can start to make a real difference in the local area before looking further afield. Defibs for Moray has been chosen as the Charity of the Year by Moray Business Women. Ken said: “I have a life. I have a family. I have a business. I have friends. I have a drive and desire to ensure that if anyone has to go through what my family has gone through then we want to stack the odds in their favour and that their outcome can be as good as mine. Ideally, we will.”

Lifestyle MAG

On the 20th March 2016, Gordon and Sandra McKandie’s son Keiran was involved in an horrific accident whilst out cycling. The accident ended with Keiran sustaining fatal injuries. Keiran was Gordon and Sandra’s life and the last 19 months have been a daily struggle. Gordon and Sandra decided that Keiran’s positivity and love for life had to continue and, to this end, Keiran’s Legacy Charity was founded. The charity is about keeping Keiran’s love for life present and to ensure that this wonderful young man continues to give to society. This decision to turn what has been life-changing for the family into what will have far-reaching effects will benefit many communities in Moray; lives will be saved, education will be improved and Keiran’s passion for sport will be promoted. It has been - and will continue to be – a huge challenge. Unfortunately, there was no defibrillator on-hand when Keiran had his accident. Now, thanks to the supreme efforts of his mother and father, friends, family and the wider community, many small communities in Moray are benefiting from this equipment. Keiran’s Legacy has already supplied 10 defibrillators for fast response police vehicles across Grampian. It has been agreed that the plan will be rolled out into the Highlands. This life-saving piece of equipment has been installed in Kinloss, Lossiemouth, Ewen’s of Cornhill and Elgin Academy. Funding has just been granted to place one at Lossiemouth High School - Keiran’s Legacy would like to see training introduced to all 4th and 6th year students. The ultimate goal of the charity is to have a defibrillator in each community. If you are able to help in providing CPR training, or if you can volunteer your services, please do get in touch with the charity. Everyone working together will ensure that Keiran’s Legacy lives on. 31

WEDDINGS Aswanley is situated in the unspoilt valley of the River Deveron on the Moray-Aberdeenshire border. It has been a much-loved family home to the Inglebys for many generations. In 2004, the family set about restoring the Victorian steading as a venue. Today, Aswanley hosts both intimate family gatherings and large weddings for up to 300 people – making it one of the most popular local wedding venues

'YOUR HOME FOR THE DAY' I

n 1975, Tom and Pamela Ingleby moved to Aswanley, Glass near Huntly. They transformed the crumbling fortified house into an elegant family home and in 2004 set about restoring the Victorian steading. The barn/steading was built by Alexander Geddes in 1890. The son of the tenant of a small hillside holding in Glass, he left at 17, made his fortune in Chicago and returned to his native parish to develop the area. The agricultural depression at the time means it is one of the few examples of its type. The steading was used as the hub of agricultural activities at Aswanley until 2001, when repeated crises in British farming meant the farm had to diversify. The renovations happened in stages. The steading was ready for their daughter’s wedding in 2006 - only then did they realise the scope of the venue for hosting both large and small weddings. The steading’s interior aesthetic now mixes antique furniture with contemporary design to tell the story of the building and the place. Pam created the gardens and landscape which form the unique backdrop to Aswanley weddings. Sadly, Tom died suddenly in 2008. However, Pam remains eternally optimistic; 'Never a dull moment! I love the fact that what Tom and I began has been picked up by the next generation and taken in new directions we probably couldn’t imagine.' Pam takes great pleasure in showing couples around and seeing them celebrate their day at Aswanley. The estate is now

MUSIC

Life is a song... Amy Papiransky lives and breathes music. Her musical journey has been swift and fulfilling and she has packed more into her young years than most of us would do in a lifetime. Meeting Amy, it is impossible not to get swept up by her love of singing, piano and violin, carrying you along on a tide of boundless enthusiasm as she modestly invites you to share her world.

A

my Papiransky was born and raised in Keith by parents who are not musical; this gift she gets from her grandparents. However, it was apparent from an early age that she possessed a great talent for not only singing but also for playing musical instruments. She began playing the piano at the age of 8, followed by the violin at the age of 12. Singing started at the very early age of 6 with lessons starting when she was 11. During her school years, Amy was classically trained in all three disciplines and successfully gained Grade 8

sing

in both piano and voice and Grade 7 in the violin. Amy found a love of folk music during her second year of High School, which resulted in her joining the Strathspey Fiddlers, touring with them in America, Canada and Germany. She then moved to Aberdeen, attending Aberdeen University where she gained her BMus Ed Teaching Degree. It was during the University years that Amy’s passion for folk music flourished and she embarked on traditional piano lessons and also on writing her own songs.

Singing releases powerful endorphins that make you feel better, it can dispel depression and can raise pain thresholds and, with a little bit of encouragement and the proper tuition, anyone can do it.

Amongst her many public performances, Amy has performed on Robbie Shepherd’s BBC Scotland radio show ‘Take the Floor’ and also the ‘BBC Proms in the Park’. Plans to record an album are in the pipeline and, on top of everything else that is happening in her life, Amy has accepted a place to study for a Masters in Scottish Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She was one of the six semi-finalists in the BBC Young Musician of the Year held in October 2017 – and she was one of five through to the finals in January 2018. 45

Music can break down barriers, bring people together and touch people of all ages

In Amy’s own words “music is a fun, social activity and can help a person become more confident and creative”. Music can break down barriers, bring people together and can touch people of all ages. Singing releases powerful endorphins that make you feel better, it can dispel depression and can raise pain thresholds and, with a little bit of encouragement and the proper tuition, anyone can do it. Amy understands the power of music and singing and puts 100% of herself into her teaching. No matter if you wish for tuition in piano, violin, fiddle, voice, traditional Scottish piano playing, Scots song or song writing, Amy’s extensive experience will help and guide you. Her experience includes teaching at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, at SC&T (Scottish Culture and Traditions), also based in Aberdeen and at Common Ground on the Hill, a music festival in America. Prestigious achievements for one so young. Her repertoire of songs ranges from the popular to the traditional: songs made famous by artists such as Norah Jones, Paolo Nutini, Coldplay and Take That; numbers from the musicals – from Porgy and Bess to The Lion King; and Scottish and traditional/folk songs from Robert Burns to Dougie MacLean. It is a vast list and encompasses a wide variety of differing artists/singer-songwriters. Amy brings her own distinctive style to each and every number. She is a remarkable young performer with a superb voice and a great future ahead of her.

Traditional musician finalist... Amy was one of five finalists at this year's BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2018 on Sunday January 28 at Glasgow’s City Halls. The competition is seen as the premier accolade for young musicians in their field. Judges were unanimous in awarding the 25-year-old singer Hannah Rarity the title. Jeff Zycinski, Head of Radio at BBC Scotland, said: “Every year we are amazed at the consistently high standard of young musicians who reach the finals. Each musician gave a stirring performance, broadcast live on BBC Radio Scotland as part of Celtic Connections. Amy gave a magnificent performance and should be very proud. She spoke to us the next day. “I can’t believe what an amazing night it was. I was so so nervous but found myself getting into it by my last song. So happy for Han, she did it for the girls whoo! Such a talent. I was just made up with the fact I could share a stage with those amazing musicians!” To watch Amy’s performance use this link: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05wlhpj

room. The chef, Mubarik Ali, has a wealth of experience in combining the spices and herbs used in Indian cuisine and is not afraid to experiment with different combinations of flavours and textures in the dishes that he creates. Where possible, all ingredients are sourced locally and the menu offers traditional dishes alongside more innovative ones, mixing the old favourites with new twists that reflect the contemporary style of cooking in today’s India. At lunchtime the menu offers a choice of starter, main course and either a dessert or tea or coffee. The choice of main course dictates the price – and the price starts as low as £4.95 for all three courses, which is exceptionally good value in anyone’s book. If you are not sure which dish to choose, one of the waiting staff will discuss your preferences and will guide you through the menu. And the portions when they arrive are most generous. The starters are substantial, a meal in themselves, but the main courses take generous to a new level. Combined with a dish piled high with plain boiled rice 51

EATING OUT

and a nan bread that overlaps the large plate it is presented on, the diner might be forgiven for thinking that he may not finish. But finish everything you do, because the food is so temptingly delicious that it would be a crime not to empty your plate. We met one lunchtime to take advantage of the Qismat’s 3 Course Business Lunch, which is available from Monday to Saturday from 12 noon to 2pm. Starters of garlic mushrooms and prawn cocktail were followed by Chicken Chandani (chicken in a fresh cream, honey and coconut sauce – hugely indulgent but oh so delicious) and Chicken Tikka Faislabadi (chicken with spring onions, red peppers, fresh garlic, fresh green chillies and chilli sauce – deliciously spicy). Sadly, dessert was not an option as we were far too full to take anything but a cup of tea and a cup of coffee. It was all so very good and such good value for money – it’s no wonder they

keep winning awards. But Qismat is not just a restaurant. It also offers a takeaway service with free home delivery within Elgin on orders over £25. Gift vouchers are available and they are experts in outside catering. Whatever the occasion the attentive team at Qismat will create the perfect menu for you – once you have given them your personal requirements they will tailor the menu to suit and can provide their professional services at your home, in the garden, your work place or any other place of your choice. The customer comes first and they do their utmost to ensure that everything is perfect and that your experience is special and memorable. The team at Qismat are proud of what they do and of what they have achieved. To quote Mr Ali “we can’t wait to serve you”.

HEALTH & WELL BEING

‘Time to Talk’ boosts health for all National ‘Time to Talk’ day took place on February 1st where everyone was encouraged to share their time and their thoughts with others. Nice idea, but can it really make us healthier?

I

n the modern world we are increasingly aware of how to look after our physical health, but a new epidemic is growing in western countries – loneliness and isolation. As issues with our mental health we can feel embarrassed, unskilled or even unaware that these could affect us personally; despite the fact that mental health is always shifting, as like physical health, it goes up and down daily and over our lifetime. “Being willing to share my own experience appropriately helps others to open up.” Research shows stigma surrounding mental health is a massive problem, affecting us all regardless of age and background, leading to national campaign See Me creating ‘Time to Talk’ day and partnering with local organisation Moray Wellbeing Hub to support change year-round. Reconnecting through conversation at local events our participants know the

power of sharing first-hand and challenging stigma. “I had lost who I was over the years and now I have regained my identity. I don't know where I would be today if I hadn't taken that first step.” For local courses, events and online resources visit Moraywellbeinghub.org.uk, search Facebook or call Heidi on 07989 331651

Consider a career in early learning and childcare With the expected changes to the way early learning and childcare (ELC) is delivered in Moray by 2020, it is the ideal time to consider a career in ELC.

A

round 300 additional staff could be required in nurseries around the region, meaning more ELC practitioners and nursery managers are required. With even more opportunities to open new nurseries in Moray. A progressive career in ELC is fulfilling and rewarding as you create a supportive and nurturing environment for children in their formative years to reach their full potential, giving children the best possible start in life. At Moray College UHI you can study from entry level through to degree and postgraduate study in education and childcare. You will gain industry relevant qualifications and

HEALTH & WELL BEING FEELGOOD FITNESS

At this time of year you can really notice the sun starting to reclaim the winter darkness by a few moments more each morning and evening. Thank goodness! So let that sunshine optimism help warm up your muscles, spine and lungs with a simple Sun Salutation yoga cycle. You can do this in just ten minutes, making it an achievable addition to your morning routine.

Wake up

...and greet the sun! A

s with all physical activity undertaken after being at rest, please gently flex and rotate your main joints, neck and spine, to avoid any accidental muscle pulls or twinges.

Start in Prayer posture. Feet at hip width apart, knees soft and not locked straight, tailbone slightly tucked forwards to elongate your spine, chest and shoulders open and relaxed and hands in a prayer gesture with thumbs touching your sternum. Breathe with focus; slowly, fully and deeply – the Sun Salutation is a cycle of yoga postures that flow into one another in harmony with your breathing.

Straighten, and exhale, folding from the hips and letting your hands extend to the floor on either side of your feet.

2 As you inhale, raise your arms up over your head. Let your arms and head tilt back, with your core muscles engaged to protect your spine as it arches, taking care not to strain.

5 Hold your breath briefly as you bring the left foot back to join the right, engaging your core in a straight-armed plank.

Exhale and shift your weight forwards so you can bring your left foot in line with your right, body folded from the hips with head down.

11

Exhale and let your knees and elbows bend to lower your knees, chest and forehead to the floor, with your bum slightly raised.

Inhale and rise, taking your arms over your head and back to gently arch your spine.

7

Exhale and lower your arms to return to Prayer pose.

Inhale and swoop your head forwards and upwards as you push up from your arms, arching your back into Cobra pose, with your legs stretched out on the floor.

8 Flex your toes under your feet and exhale as you push your bum up and back into Downward Dog.

Repeat the full Sun Salutation cycle at least twice, working up to further and more fluid repetitions as your confidence grows with practice. Ideally face the rising sun while you’re doing this for the perfect way to greet the day.

A lonely business Loneliness and social isolation is largely hidden but a very serious problem, particularly in rural areas like Moray. That is why I was pleased to support a government mental health campaign over the festive period encouraging people not to bottle things up.
