GAMES GAMES&&SHOWS SHOWS It is that time of year when a number of communities around the North East are gearing up for their annual show or games... be sure to catch one or two of them!

ShowTime! Nairn Show 28th July

Aberlour Games 5th August

Nairnshire Farming Society holds its Annual Show. “Agriculture has come a long way since our first Cattle show some 199 years ago. This annual day out is a firm favourite with competitors and spectators alike. With 150 cattle, 300 sheep and 100 horses all competing for the coveted ‘Champion of Champion’ title it’s a competition not to miss! We are joined by a host of local businesses keen to showcase their products and services. So if it’s a brand new tractor, garden furniture, locally produced meat, a new handbag or toys for the kids, our aisles really do have something for everyone. Our main ring will keep everyone entertained with displays from Nairn fire crew, Galcantray Carriage driving team and the Vintage tractor parade. Come and cheer on your local club as they compete in our new Arnold Clark Young Farmers challenge, it’s going to be messy!! As well as our chainsaw carver and bird of prey display, your little ones will love to meet and cuddle the gorgeous team of professional donkeys, also on hand for children ride please do go and say hello!”

A Fusion of Young and Ancient Highland Tradition 2018 sees the 75th running of the Aberlour Strathspey Highland Games. Whilst many games have much older origins, the last three generations have seen many changes to the role and place of the traditional ‘Highland Gathering’ in Scottish culture. Today’s games are run to the exacting standards demanded by any modern sporting event and provide a day of competitive fun and entertainment. The core attributes of any Highland games remain – the sporting events with ‘heavies’ and ‘lights’, the young Highland dancers competing passionately on the boards and the stunning presence of the massed pipe bands. The ‘Chieftain of the Games’ provides a modern interpretation of the feudal forces that gave rise to Highland Clan figuration. The Alice Littler Memorial Park venue, a man-made amphitheatre between the River Spey and the old Speyside Railway station, fuses the richness of ancient times with the hard edge of competition and fun, with contests such as ‘Haggis Hurling’ for overseas visitors and races for children of all ages.

Grantown Show 9th August The Strathspey Farmers’ Club Grantown Show - Heathfield Park. The Livestock Competitions will culminate with the Grand Parade of Winners, followed by an afternoon of entertainment including a Display of Vintage Vehicles and Pageant of Reality/Talent show. Fun and competition in the children’s races and who can resist the pet’s parade? Terrier racing adds to the fun. Don’t miss the varied trade stands, domestic marquee, kiddies’ side shows, and much more – indeed there really is something for everyone. In the evening from 9pm – 1am there will be the popular marquee dance where you will hear the lively ceilidh band Tweed.

GAMES & SHOWS

Keith Show 12th/13th August Keith Show has been entertaining visitors since the 1870s having replaced the Simmereve Fayre dating back to the 1700s. With something for everyone, whether your interest is the many entries of cattle, sheep and horses, or the vast array of crafts in the craft fair, the many horticultural and SWRI exhibits or visit the 200 trade stands. The pet show is a must and the kids love the children's entertainment and farm. There is always something happening in the main ring, be it massed pipe bands or the thrill of the quad bike displays. Sunday highlights include the Truck Show and Vintage Rally along with Show Jumping, Pony Clubs Games and Feather Classes. Monday sees the thrilling finale of the Simmers Contracts Scottish Beef Cattle Championship with beef champions from across Scotland battling it out for the top honours and big prizes. Though farming methods today are different to those of our forefathers, Keith Show still holds true to its agricultural roots, as can be seen by the different exhibitions, demonstrations and traders available within the showground.

Get involved... A tremendous amount of work goes into the organising of these events. This goes on from one year to the next and is done, in the main, by a band of very committed volunteers. When you go along as a visitor on the day, spare a thought for for the many hours these hard working folk have put in to bring these events to fruition and if anything is not quite ‘perfect’, stop and think, could you do better? Why not join a committee - you would be welcomed with open arms!

ast year saw record-breaking numbers of people visit Scotland’s 300 historic visitor attractions, including Balvenie and Duffus Castles and Elgin Cathedral here in Moray. Moray also has the Malt Whisky trail with all the distilleries and some of Scotland’s best beaches. It is great that so many people visit Scotland to find out more about and enjoy our wonderful culture, environment and heritage – but with all this on our doorstep, some of it with free “entry” and promising signs that we might just get some decent summer weather, they also provide a great family day out for local

residents. As do our annual local agricultural shows and Highland games which are featured elsewhere in Lifestyle. They provide a great opportunity to showcase all that is best in farming, food production and traditional rural crafts and industries in Moray and Aberdeenshire. These are key events on the local calendar and their organisation is a year-long activity – I want to pay tribute to all the volunteers who work hard to make these shows happen. Their efforts help to ensure the continuation of a longstanding and important part of our rural heritage. Of course, the shows are also

a chance for communities and neighbours to meet up and catch up, as well as being a fun day out for friends and families.

They cannot be treated like pheasants as they must have the addition of green foods in their diet, replicating what would be available in the forest. He sells the birds to zoos and also to the Highland Wildlife Park. At the moment we are right in the middle of the breeding season, which starts according to the spring weather progress – March and April – and will continue through May and on into June. At the last count Alistair had 26 eggs. Whilst Alistair normally encourages visitors, during the breeding season visitors are discouraged as the hens are very sensitive to disturbances and can leave the nest. The capercaillie is one of Scotland’s most distinctive birds and Alistair’s efforts to increase their numbers is laudable. Once the breeding season is over he welcomes visitors and is only too happy to share his knowledge and his love of what he does with children and adults alike.

lack of suitable habitat. Figures on record show that there were 10,000 pairs in the 1960s, plummeting to fewer than 1,000 birds in 1999. In our mountainous areas, poorly marked cables for ski lifts have contributed to the declining numbers. One man who is determined to keep the capercaillie firmly on the map is Alistair Mackie, one-time gamekeeper responsible for the breeding of grouse in captivity. He has always been interested in the capercaillie and, realising that their numbers were declining, made contact with Norwegian men who had been breeding the birds for over 30 years. With help from the Scottish Government, Alistair went across to Bergen to meet them. The result is the establishing of his own colony of birds at his home near

The statistics are sobering: • More deaths occur on rural roads than on urban roads • Passengers are more likely to be the ones who come off worst

Each and every parent wishes the very best for their children and no parent should have to go through the anguish of losing a child, nor should siblings suffer such trauma in their young lives. Linda and Raymond Harper and their daughter Louise had to endure exactly that when their son/brother Stuart, tragically died on the 31st May 2008, just sixteen days short of his eighteenth birthday. 18

The day arrived when he was able to become the proud owner of the car of his dreams – a Peugeot 106 Rallye Series 2, so exclusive that

UK. Travelling to Whitley Bay with his father to collect his car, Stuart’s excitement levels must have been sky high. This was the beginning of a brand new chapter in his life. Tragically, only days after he got his Rallye, Stuart was a passenger in a friend’s car which was involved in a bad accident and a day after the accident, on the 31st May 2008, Stuart passed away at the age of 17. Every year around the time of his birthday, Linda, Raymond and Louise have been the key people involved in a special event called Rrrrallye, which is held at Keith Community Sports and Community Centre. Money from the event is used to go towards vouchers for Skid Car Courses, money off Pass Plus or Advanced Driving and they organise early introduction training courses for 14 to 17 year olds – attendees come away from these courses with a better knowledge of how to drive and how to handle their cars on any road conditions. To date Rrrrallye has issued two hundred vouchers for 17 to 25 year olds to take part in these courses. The last group of twelve 14 to 17 year olds taking part in the Rrrrallye Youth Drive at Alford in September will bring the total for this course to three hundred. Rrrrallye aims to encourage youngsters to do these courses as it does help raise their awareness.

Lifestyle MAG

Linda and Raymond are endeavouring to encourage family members to get together to purchase vouchers for their youngsters, perhaps as a birthday or Christmas gift, as every little bit of training will help to focus minds on the dangers of believing that “it will never happen to me”. On the day of Rrrrallye, there will be cars from all the different car clubs; motorbikes and the emergency services will be in attendance as well; Roadwise Driver Training and other driving instructors will be there to answer any questions and if you fancy a challenge they will test you if you enter the Driver of the Year. Local charities and fundraising groups will bring along fun games and information stalls. It will be a great day out for all the family but underlying everything will be the message that all drivers need to be made aware of the dangers out there on the roads. Passing your test is just the start of the real learning experience young or old we will never know it all. Statistics prove we all make mistakes. Rrrrallye are doing their bit to at least help reduce the risks to our youngsters. Go along and support this wonderful event

2018 Rrrrallye will be on Sunday 10th June from 10am to 4pm

The Gather’n Cafe What a transformation only a short time ago it was the Clydesdale Bank - now it is a wonderful new café with an alladin’s cave of beautiful gifts. The 3 Bags Wool shop you all know and love is also incorporated at the back. Sarah Nairn Anderson has fulfilled her dream. She has moved and improved over the years but she says “this is it, I am not moving from here” And why would she, it’s perfect. The Gather’n is now open from 8 to 8 seven days a week. Whether it is for a quick coffee and home bake or soup and a toastie for lunch. Everything is homemade and you can sit in and relax in the tastefully decorated café or you can take it away. Sarah has a number of plans for the coming months including her Knit and Natters. She wants locals to come and enjoy the Gather’n and in the winter months it will be available for hire for your own family gather’n. Sarah is also considering other social gatherings and her workshops will return after September. Great news for Aberlour is now the ATM will return on the 11th June. This is a wonderful new addition to Aberlour High St. Don’t take my word for it, get yourself along and see for yourself. You will be made very welcome.

by Royal Invitation WEDDING OF THE YEAR

What do you do when you receive a letter through the post with ER - Windsor Castle stamped on the top right hand corner - well, you open it of course.

I

nside was a personal inviation for attendance to the precincts of Windsor Castle to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markel on the 19th May. I had heard on the news that the couple wanted to make their wedding more inclusive.. My daughter and I were among 2,640 'commoners' chosen by the UK's Lord-Lieutenants for our charity work and contributions made to community events in our area. We were among the lucky ones. Four people from each county across the country were invited to travel to Windsor and take up some of the best views of the wedding parade. In preparation for the big day we were contacted by the BBC and invited to upload short film clips of the run up to the wedding - we had to introduce ourselves by way of a short piece to camera - selfie-style, telling them who we were, where we lived and where we were from. These clips were used on the BBC social media pages to promote the wedding headlined 'Meet the Guests'. Thereafter, we had to tell everyone what we would we wear? How would we travel? and how did we feel about attending the wedding. It was awesome of course. I'm particulary fond of Prince

24

Harry and am inspired by his work with charities, injured exservicemen and women and the Invictus Games. I think he has found his perfect match in Meghan - she is grounded and 'sorted' in her own right and I am sure she will use her new platform to support causes that help the advancement of women. On the day, we arrived in plenty of time. The streets of Windsor at 6am were hushed but with a gentle buzz. Bunting was strewn across the streets and huddles of foreign reporters with cameramen tried to capture the mood of the crowd. Security was tight at the castle with airport-style frisking. But once inside the place was ours. Yes, there were roped off areas but each had prime views of St George's Chapel. 2,640 people were easily lost within the castle grounds.

Yours for $28,500... Each guest was presented with a wedding gift bag: a small hessian bag containing a large chocolate coin, a fridge magnet, a bottle of water, shortbread and an order of service. Needless to say that these are now collectors' items and many are appearing on Ebay. The first one sold went for an eye-watering $28,500. Hopefully all proceeds went to charity!

We took up position opposite the chapel entrance where we saw the star-studded guests arrive; George Clooney, Elton John, Serena Williams, Oprah Winfrey, David and Victoria Beckham, James Corden to name a few. The Royal cars arrived dropping off HM the Queen and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla and the rest of the Royal family at a separate entrance. Prince William and Harry strolled into the chapel via the main steps followed a few minutes later by the bridal procession. Personally, I found the moment when Meghan entered the chapel on her own particularly moving. How brave, how beautiful in her stunning, simplistic wedding gown by Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller. The service was broadcast across the grounds - the crowd settled and listened. There were no distracting big

Lifestyle MAG

screens - just music and words. The Rev Michael Curry with his rip-roaring sermon about fire and love the sure highlight. The wedding ceremony itself was different in the way it combined very British tradition and pageantry with diversity and modernity as the bride's cultural heritage was incorporated. The fact that she is bi-racial has very special meaning around the Commonwealth which she and Harry will be touring. The monarchy will be stronger for it. Fiona Hill 25

The distillery was founded in 1840 by the Grant brothers James and John and was the only distillery to be named after its founders as historically most were named after the nearby rivers which supplied their water.

In the late 1800s the distillery was

The garden was left to grow wild for many years as the distillery ownership changed hands with the emphasis on whisky production more than heritage. In 1996 under the ownership of Seagram the gardens were restored to their former glory.

DELNASHAUGH BALLINDALLOCH

A friendly country pub, welcoming guests from down the road and around the world

There is a marvellous word in the Scots language that sums up everything that is warm and homely and produces feelings that are akin to “hairy worms around your heart. That word is couthy and it is the most perfect word to use to describe the Delnashaugh Hotel. The hotel is stunningly situated in a wooded glen, close to Ballindalloch Castle, in the heart of Speyside, home to wonderful distilleries producing world-renowned single malts. For centuries this historic inn has been providing

36

hearty meals, refreshing ales and comfortable home-from-home accommodation for locals and visitors alike. It is under new management, having recently (just a little more than six months ago) been taken over by Andrew and Fiona Laing and their family, which includes daughters, son and sister. Everyone pitches in and the family feel is evident the minute you walk through the door.

The chilli chicken and steak are equally impressive, very substantial portions beautifully presented. We ask about the chef, to be told his name is Alan and he is a recent arrival from Ayr. All I can say is that Ayr’s loss is Delnashaugh’s gain. A small proportion of the chilli chicken returns to the kitchen; not because there was anything wrong with it – far from it – but it was just too much to finish. The chef is very, very generous with his portions and it is because of this that I do not order a dessert. My two companions, on the other We three arrive on a sunny but chilly early evening to be

We decline a night-cap because we are all driving but I can

automatically relax and start the unwinding process that will see us still there many hours later. Non-residents are made very welcome at the Delnashaugh and we are led to our table by an attentive waitress, handed the menus and given more than enough time to make our choices. There is nothing worse than being hurried along. As well as the set menu there are special chef’s dishes of the day and, of course, this makes it even more difficult to decide. After much deliberation we plump for pate, haggis bon-bons and prawn cocktail, to be followed by the Delnashaugh special burger, chilli chicken and a steak plus, naturally, all the usual trimmings. We have all made our individual choices but that does not stop each of us eyeing our neighbour’s dish with envy. Maybe next time we will do as they do in Greece and have a mezze, putting everything in the middle of the table for all to enjoy. Not much talking goes on during the enjoyment of the starters, just a succession of little noises of appreciation. We start the blethering again once the plates are cleared away and we await the main course. Much oohs welcome our mains. The burger has to be seen to be believed and we ask if you are meant to climb it or eat it. It is a masterpiece of a balancing act and if it tastes as good as it looks ….. but will he finish everything? (He does, by the way!)

imagine that if you are a resident you might just be tempted to have an after-dinner single malt in front of that mesmeric open fire. The oak panelled bar with its comprehensive selection of single malts and a most interesting family of artisan gins would beckon and tempt you to stay, deep in conversation until the wee sma’ hours. Andrew and Fiona may be relatively new to the Delnashaugh but they have already made their mark with their warm, friendly welcome and seasonal dishes to tempt and satisfy every taste. There are plans afoot too, the first of which has just been completed; An amazing new decking area to the front which cantilevers over the steep bank and offers views across the river to the hills beyond. In the summer months this will be the scene of countless barbecues – nothing quite

beats eating al fresco. Whether you are stopping for a morning coffee, afternoon tea, lunch or dinner or are lucky enough to be staying in one of their well-appointed rooms, you can be sure of one thing – the welcome you will get will be just like stepping into a friend’s house. Bring the dog, kick your shoes off and relax – because you will be at home.

I had a few conversations over a cup of tea at breakfast about their everyday life, demands and media attention. They also showed a lot of interest in what we do too and asked to have a look round the kitchen and hotel. It was all very relaxed, which is what we want here at the Knowes. They also took time over the weekend to take pictures with our staff & customers and weren’t phased by the attention they were receiving. Meet...

The Trad Project Local band The Trad Project has graduated from the pub scene and is hitting some big stages this summer... Their driving, upbeat tunes and original Celtic-Folk-Rock songs are tight and riff-heavy. The Indie-style vocals of lead-singer Calum Mackenzie Jones mix with Angus Montgomery's dangerous drumming, Euan MacPhail's firey fiddling and Shannon Marley's bass - an awesome chick who rocks in her high heels. This brand new band is set to hit the festival scene running in 2018 with gigs and concerts across Scotland from Tiree to Belladrum. At the end of May this talented group of local teenagers supported the award-winning group Elephant Sessions at Inverness's top venue The Ironworks – attracting an audience of more than 1,000 on the night and at Gordon Castle Games where the tent was jumping. These two gigs alone have catapulted the band to the next level. And they can certainly hold their own - with Calum's wit and stage presence The Trad Project has the audience in the palm of their hands. It is rumoured that the Elephant Sessions is keen to have them as their warm-up act at future gigs. Be one of the first to catch this new band live - locally you can see them at Speyfest in July or why not travel a bit further afield you won't be disappointed. 44

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Ask The Audiologist Mallory Peter, audiologist at Specsavers Elgin answers the most commonly asked questions and myths about hearing and hearing aids... Why should I get a hearing test? We tend to take our hearing for granted but it can deteriorate very gradually over time and a hearing loss can impact your lifestyle and other aspects of your general health and wellbeing without you realising. So it’s important to get your hearing checked regularly. If the loss is identified sooner rather than later, it’s easily resolved in most cases.

How will I know if I have a hearing loss? Everyone experiences hearing loss in different ways, so it’s hard to say exactly. However there are symptoms that are more common than others, such as difficulty following group conversations or feeling that ‘everyone mumbles these days!’ I usually ask my patients question such as: Has someone suggested that you’re not hearing as well as before? 46

Do you tend to have the TV much louder than others? Do you avoid certain activities or even simple phone calls because they’re hard work? Do any of these scenarios ring a bell, you should have your hearing checked.

What will happen when I come for a test? Will I need hearing aids straight away? At Specsavers the hearing checks are free, quick and non-invasive. We check the physical health of the ear and assess your hearing levels to form a thorough prescription. From that we can advise on what the next steps are. If the results suggest you would benefit from hearing aids then we discuss all aspects of your hearing and which devices will best suit your needs.

Are the small in-the-ear aids more expensive? No, in-the-ear aids are no more expensive than any other style. Prices are based on level of technology and

the aids capabilities, not on size. There’s no need to worry however, as the majority of hearing aid styles are very discreet these days and not like the devices your parents may have worn.

Will the hearing aids cut out background noise?

Once I get hearing aids will I depend on them? Only as much as you may depend on your glasses to see clearly! You’ll feel as though you want to wear them more often when you experience a great improvement to your hearing.

Will my hearing get worse if I wear hearing aids? Your hearing naturally deteriorates over time in the same way your sight does, but not due to wearing hearing aids. Some people do notice a difference in their hearing after wearing them for long periods of time, however this is only an illusion. A hearing aid can highlight how much the wearer has actually been missing, and when the hearing aid is removed, the loss is just more noticeable.

Will my hearing aid whistle? No, a well fitted hearing device should not whistle whilst worn in the ear. It is the nature of the aid to ‘give feedback’ or whistle when the aid isn’t inserted correctly or there is a build-up of wax, but these issues are very easily dealt with.

Can I sleep with my hearing aids in? Do you sleep with you glasses on? Only by accident, maybe! We recommend you take them out at night for comfort.

Lifestyle MAG

No, hearing aids won’t cut out all background noise. If a device did this, your day-to-day environment would sound very unnatural and could also be dangerous in certain situations. We do however have a selection of devices which can successfully assist in difficult, noisy environments.

What happens if I do not get on with my hearing aids? We take great care to cater to all types of patients and their particular needs. If we find however that we can’t get you to where you want to be with your hearing and you are not satisfied, we do offer a full 90 day money back guarantee with all of our devices. As audiologists we strive to get the best hearing possible for our patients, simply because we know the right hearing aid can change an individual’s life. .

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Motivate my day! Moray’s Year of Young People 2018 celebrates leadership in wellbeing. Locally we’ve already seen young people celebrated at Moray Community Awards. Winners included Cameron Main who won Ultimate Champion for his work setting up Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation, also Beaver leader Laura Smith, who has set up numerous activities and projects to inspire young women. Such inspirational stories prove that young people can lead in making change in Moray and in their own lives. Top wellbeing events include a family fun day in Elgin’s Cooper Park with inflatables and activity stations each based on a positive motivational theme such as: ‘motivate my day’, ‘super-size your self-esteem’ and ‘team up for the tough stuff’. Funds raised from the £1.50 entrance go to improving mental health services for young people through charity MQ.

Moray Wellbeing Hub is sending volunteer youth workers to be trained in Ireland this summer to support Moray youngsters to become mental health Champions as part of their existing social movement, hoping to give them the tools to strengthen what is already happening locally. After all, who could be better to lead new projects than local young people themselves!

Colourful egg on toast lunch SERVES 2

Try this healthy, tasty, quick recipe for lovely summer days... feel energised and ready for your afternoon in the sunshine - warm inside, warm outside - perfect!

1 medium sized fresh beetroot 1 yellow or red pepper 4 slices wholemeal or seeded bread 1 ripe avocado Black pepper 4 sundried tomato halves, chopped Large handful mixed spicy salad leaves, or mix of rocket and lettuce 2 fresh free-range eggs Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano - parmesan! FOR THE DRESSING: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 heaped tsp Dijon mustard 1 heaped tsp honey 3 tsp cider vinegar Peel and slice the beetroot and slice into thin rounds. Cut the pepper into halves, deseed, and slice into half rings. Spread out both vegetables onto a baking tray and dry roast at 200°C for 15 minutes or until the peppers are starting to brown at the edges and the beetroot slices start to kink and curl. You should end up with sweet, tender veg that still holds its shape; rescue them before they turn too crispy. Set aside to cool. Bring water to the boil in a small, shallow saucepan or frying pan. Meanwhile, toast 4 slices wholemeal or seeded bread and top with slices of ripe avocado. Split the whole fruit between the four toasts and crush or spread on. Season with black pepper. Serve 2 toasts per plate. Divide the beetroot and pepper

Lifestyle MAG

equally between the plates, letting them overlap the toasts. Add the sundried tomatoes and salad leaves. Carefully crack the eggs into the boiling water and turn down to a simmer. If the eggs are really fresh, they should automatically form a neat compact shape without any need for tricks like adding salt, vinegar or swirling the water. In the minute or so your eggs will take to cook, make up your salad dressing. In an empty jam jar, measure out and shake up all the ingredients to emulsify.

Gently fish the eggs out of the water when the white is just firm and the yolk has been sealed but is still runny. Place on top of the middle of each mound of salad. Drizzle all with the salad dressing and sprinkle with shavings of parmesan. Enjoy!
