With 2019 well underway it’s probably just about allowed to revisit Hogmanay at Burghead especially as people there celebrate on the 11th January New Year from the old Julian Calendar.

‘ Men and boys carry the burning clavie around town to deposit burning pieces which are kept for good luck’ 2

crew ritual B

urghead’s Hogmanay differs somewhat from most of Scotland, notably because it takes place on 11th January each year - New Year from the old Julian Calendar. The Moray fishing community was an important centre for the ancient Pictish Kingdoms, with the remnants of a Pictish fort on the dominant headland at the end of the town. From those times the tradition of the Burning of the Clavie comes - a fire ritual to ward off evil spirits. Ahead of the big night the ‘Clavie Crew’ prepare the Clavie, which is made up of a half barrel and built up with wooden barrel staves on top of a pole. The construction of the Clavie is hugely traditional and takes hours of work by craftsmen using hand tools. The barrel was set alight, as always, in Granary Street and the Crew, a couple of dozen men and boys, carried the burning barrel around the old part of the town, stopping off at homes, pubs and shops to deposit burning pieces of Clavie, which are kept for good luck. All the while thousands thronged the streets, following the Clavie as it wound its way to its destination on the ‘Doorie Hill’ near the headland, or gathering there awaiting its arrival. Three quarters of an hour after being set alight the Clavie arrived on the hill and was inserted in

its stone plinth. The Crew added the smaller Clavie Barrel inside the larger barrel and built up the fire with more staves, feeding it with copious amounts of tar! As the tar was thrown on, the hillside lit up with the bonfire and the onlookers felt the waves of heat. Finally the supports burned through, the small barrel dropped, marking the New Year in Burghead. A spectacular night for locals and visitors alike!

Looking for a dream location for your perfect day? You need look no further than Boharm House in Mulben. Nestled in the heart of Speyside, this secluded venue is charm personified.

oharm House, built in 1811, has maintained its Georgian charm and boasts many period features. James Player and his sister inherited Boharm House from their Uncle, who originally renovated it the late 1950s. This beautiful house had unfortunately fallen into disrepair and after spending ten years working to restore it, James and his wife Kirstin moved in 2013. It is James and Kirstin’s mission to bring Boharm House back to its former glory. This is very much a labour of love as James has many fond memories of

Pctures: Lindsay Robertson Photography spending time here as a child and now that they have two young daughters of their own they want them to enjoy this wonderful home as James did. James and Kirstin want to invite a few couples to share their wonderful home each year for their special day. Kirstin says “The house loves people, it just comes alive when it’s busy”. You, and up to 20 guests, can make use of the stunning drawing room and dining room. There is also exclusive access to the grounds and amazing formal gardens which extend out into woodland. This absolutely stunning backdrop for your photos will ensure a wonderful memory of your day to keep for the rest of your life. Although the house itself is only able to cater for small intimate weddings of around 20 people, the steading or grounds are available for larger numbers.

For over 60 years Finnies has been helping couples find their perfect wedding rings. Here, we share a few tips on choosing your perfect ring. As individual as you are We offer wedding rings in platinum, palladium, yellow, white & rose gold, as well as silver, titanium and tungsten. It makes sense to take your time to decide what will suit you and your lifestyle. Would a modest, simple, sleek band be perfect, or would you like to see diamonds sparkling every day? Choosing a yellowgold ring is timeless and classic, while platinum and palladium, the strongest and most durable of metals, are more contemporary. Increasingly couples are opting for rose-gold and many women like to match their wedding band to their engagement ring. For men, durability is often a key consideration and so platinum and palladium rings are a very popular choice. Make an impression Finnies offer a free engraving service of initials and date for all wedding rings (excluding titanium and tungsten). Think about your budget Rings in yellow, rose or white gold start from £90 for ladies and £225 for gents. Palladium and platinum start from £300 for ladies and £630 for gents. If you fancy something set with diamonds, prices start from £650. To browse, visit www.finnies.com or in our shop: 219-223 George Street in Aberdeen. 9

A marquee is an option, if your budget allows. Boharm House can provide indoor and outdoor options for the ceremony – this is Scotland after all! Whatever the weather Boharm will deliver a stunning backdrop to wander through with your photographer for those treasured photographs. You can then host a Champagne reception in the drawing room or steading, then relax until it is time to continue your celebration in the local area. There are some fantastic local village halls or choose one of many fine hotels in the area. Kirstin and James are the perfect duo; they openly admit that Kirstin is very much the motivational one, full of enthusiasm and drive. Kirstin’s qualities are complemented perfectly by James, who has a keen eye for detail, ensuring that everything for your day is done to perfection. One of Boharms unique features is that they are very flexible and are happy to help you plan a day to suit your needs perfectly. Whether that is providing a venue just for your photos or for your whole celebration. Go and speak to Kirston or James to see what they can do for you. 10

Rosa and Richard chose Boharm House for their special day in September 2018: “Boharm House is beautiful. its gardens and the surrounding wild grounds, captured our imagination immediately as the perfect place for our wedding ceremony. James and Kirstin Player, along with their two little girls, were fantastic at making us feel welcome in their home. With their experience, we worked together to make every part of our day personal, from canapes made using their own produce from the garden to being chauffeured in a classic wedding car.”

Nothing is too much trouble. Kirstin and James would love to welcome you to their home. Just give them a call and make your day.

Holiday

Ever thought about getting married abroad? Or are you planning your honeymoon or holiday? Here are a few ideas to whet your appetite.

WEDDINGS Weddings abroad provides the ultimate opportunity to create a completely unique and memorable experience. Say ‘I do’ on the soft, white sands of Mauritius, on a yacht under the Cyprus sun, in front of Elvis in a Las Vegas chapel, or against the colourful backdrop of the Amalfi Coast. Anything is possible when you book through Brilliant Travel, especially with our Holiday Payment Plan that spreads the cost of your wedding abroad over monthly payments. MAURITIUS Mauricia Beachcomber Resort & Spa FREE Mauritius Wedding 7 nights Return economy flights All inclusive FREE land & water sports Airport transfers in Mauritius Departures in September 2019 From £1,365pp HONEYMOONS After the stress of planning a wedding, let your honeymoon experience begin at the point of enquiry by allowing a travel expert to take on the leg-work of planning your special getaway. Honeymoons should be a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, that is in your 16

eyes, the perfect travel experience. The internet is a great platform for inspiration and ideas, however a professional with first-hand experience is the best way to ensure your honeymoon is suited perfectly to you and your partner. Although everyone’s idea of a perfect honeymoon is different, adventure trips have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Couples are now looking to tick experiences off their bucket list and place themselves outside of their comfort zone, rather than relaxing on the stereotypical beach holiday. This trend has led to a rise in self-drive road-trips, escorted touring holidays, additional excursions, and particularly, multi-centre getaways – a balance of experience and relaxation makes for a perfect pair. Popular destinations include Thailand, South Africa, South America and Sri Lanka. CRUISES Why not roll your wedding and honeymoon into one by setting sail on cruise liner? Choose the setting of your wedding from a wide range of destinations; whether it be on deck as sun sets over the middle of the ocean or in one of the many exciting countries on your journey. After saying ‘I do’, step back on board to instantly relax into your honeymoon or choose to disembark in your dream destination and begin your honeymoon there: the options are endless. It is affordable too - there is something for every couple. Most cruise lines also offer a dedicated wedding planner who is on hand to take care of everything from flowers to photography. They ensure each package is tailored to each couple’s personal preference so that no two nuptials are the same.

TRAVEL

ld r o w e h t o t s s e n r e v In

At Inverness Airport, we recognise the importance of making global connections as seamless and cost-effective as possible. That’s why we work hard with our airline partners to offer Codeshare Agreements. What are codeshares? It all sounds technical but in fact it’s quite simple. A codeshare is an agreement between airlines which allows everyone to have easy access to the world from their local airport. Thanks to Codeshare Agreements, you can get all your flights on one ticket. This means that if one of your flights is delayed or cancelled andyou miss subsequent flights, you won’t be stranded, and it’s not your problem to sort it all out. You also get your luggage checked straight through to your final destination. So how do I find a codeshare? You can use a travel agent or a flight search sites like Skyscanner. Travel agents know how to get the best deals and how to protect you incase something goes wrong, and very often, because of the quantity of flights they are booking, then can get you a better deal or an upgrade. 1 20

Photo – Graeme Bell, General Manager at Inverness Airport

Do all airlines have codeshares? No not all airlines offer this. easyJet have their own version, called easyJet Worldwide, which is available on their flights through Gatwick. Simply pick up your bags at North Terminal and walk them 50 yards to the Gatwick Connect desk. Scan your boarding pass and place your bags on the scales. The Gatwick Connect staff take your bags while you wait for your next departure. Gatwick Connect offers a similar protection if your first flight is delayed or cancelled, and the service costs £35 per person. So to sum it all up, codeshares will save you stress, money and time, and you never know, the airlines might be able to throw in some extras and upgrades. So what destination is on your bucket list? #InvernessToTheWorld

www.invernessairport.co.uk

Understanding Codeshare Agreements It’s time to get out that bucket list – and start ticking things off! Always dreamed of driving Route 66? Fly from Inverness to Atlanta, LA or Las Vegas to kick off your journey. Attracted to America’s National Parks and Forests? Fly with BA via London Heathrow to Phoenix to visit the Grand Canyon, or Denver to reach the Rocky Mountains. If your dream is to go east – visit Tokyo, or tackle the Great Wall of China from Beijing. There are many flight and hotel deals available from your local travel agent so give them a call and start planning the trip of a lifetime.

JOHNSTONS

A stitch The story of Johnstons of Elgin is a tale of two families – the Johnstons and the Harrisons – but it is also a tale of vision, dedication and determination.

1797 22

n 1797 Alexander Johnston established his textile business in Elgin. In 1936 the company was bought by Edward Stroud Harrison. During both periods of ownership the company has seen off fire, economic depression, wars and flooding but, throughout, the company’s work ethos has been the backbone that has seen them conquer adversity and grow to be a global leader. Janet Rae, a journalist with a keen interest in textile manufacturing, has written a book about Johnstons of Elgin, from its inception in 1797 to 2018. Research for the book, which covers an astonishing 221 years

‘HRH The Princess Royal commends Johnstons’ continuous investment in innovative machinery...’

in time of this family-owned business, was carried out by Ian Urquhart, Johnstons’ Chairman who has been a Director since 1981 and Chairman since 2001. It goes without saying that Ian’s extensive knowledge of both local and Scottish history has been invaluable. The book, which has been launched in Elgin and Hawick, contains a foreword from HRH, Anne, Princess Royal who commends the company’s continuous investment in innovative machinery and the development of their workforce. Between them, Elgin and Hawick employ over 1,000 people and have over 120 people on modern apprenticeship

schemes, keeping to their belief that investing heavily in the training of young people is the way forward. Testimony to the company’s investment in their workforce is the fact that there are numerous employees who have more than 20 years’ service. Johnstons of Elgin is a name synonymous with luxury cloth, accessories and knitwear. The company imports over half of all raw cashmere fibre coming into the UK and in 1851 was the first in the UK to weave cashmere. The company has its own branded range but also produces for the top fashion houses. It is the first choice for couture houses in Paris, London, Tokyo and New York. With a weaving mill in Elgin, on the site of its first mill established in 1797, and knitwear mill in Hawick, the company offers a wide range of the finest garments and accessories. The mill in Elgin (known 24

as a vertical mill) receives raw fibre and carries out all stages of the process through to finished garments and accessories – all on one site. Their mill tour, which is not to be missed, gives the visitor an indepth view of how the raw fibre is received, washed and prepared and then spun into the company’s magnificent cashmere, lambswool and tweeds. Chairman and researcher Ian Urquhart explains: ‘The book takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the history of Johnstons. Eight generations have steered Johnstons through wars, depressions and hardship - but with successes in selling to export markets and winning countless awards. It also tells the story of the highly skilled craftsmanship required to produce the very highest quality. The book celebrates the generations of people who have worked in the two mills.’

The 128-page book, with 90 images, mostly in full colour, will retail at ÂŁ20 and will be available from the company stores or online from www.johnstonsofelgin.com

FERGUS EWING MSP

Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy and Connectivity

Farming threat from No Deal Brexit January began with my grilling Michael Gove in London and finished with my being grilled by hill farmers in Stirling. Robert McDonald who farms near Grantown-on-Spey, chairs the committee of the National Farmers Union that deals with policy on less favoured areas including our hill farmers in Scotland. I was able to assure him and his colleagues that the Scottish Government will maintain the valued LFASS scheme support this year at its full 100% level, and that although under EU rules it is to

reduce in subsequent years, we have committed to avoiding it falling below an effective rate of 80%. But beyond that I am determined that we should find a way to avoid any real reduction at all - namely to develop a solution or set of policy solutions which will enable that support to be maintained. The reasons are that our hill farmers sustain our rural communities and are the custodians of the countryside. Without their work, and their sheep and cattle the hills would not be grazed but would be abandoned.

The threat of a Brexit No Deal dominated the meeting with Michael Gove, where I argued that our farmers face a series of clear threats that can only be avoided by removal of the No Deal option from the table. I wish I could say that I got a clear answer from him. Over these next few weeks my attentions will be devoted to doing all possible to prevent a series of disasters engulfing Scottish Farming.

Founded in 1887 by William Grant, the Glenfiddich Distillery nestles in an enviable position just outside the whisky-orientated town of Dufftown. Since the first drop was distilled on Christmas Day all those years ago, the distillery has remained in family hands and is therefore not restricted by corporate regulations. It is free to do its own thing – which it does with flair.

The late, great Iain Banks in his must-read book ‘Raw Spirit’ (in which he travels the length and breadth of Scotland in search of the perfect dram) writes that the single malt that most impressed him was the Glenfiddich Gran Reserva 21 year old. It is “brilliantly different, complex, utterly assured whisky making of the first order”. Stunning on its own and maybe even better with a touch of water. Praise indeed. But Glenfiddich is more than just a superb

A visit to the distillery can take in the tours, naturally, but those persons who have been on the tours before might prefer to relax and unwind in the coffee shop, gift shop or art gallery. Fifty years ago, forward thinking people developed the visitor centre and in 2019 this is to be celebrated, with an anniversary year of planned events that cover almost everything from live music to art exhibitions. There will be something for everyone. The visitor centre was originally located at the edge of the substantial car park and soon outgrew its brief. It is now the building that houses the work of the Artists

The erstwhile maltings has been transformed into The Malt Barn, a coffee shop that combines black beams with whitewashed walls and honey coloured wood, to create not only a relaxing meeting place but also a venue that can be used for meetings and events. The substantial open fire at one end of the room beckons on a cold day, whilst the honey coloured crafted wood of the bar at the opposite end welcomes connoisseurs and novices alike. Leather sofas invite you to settle down, grab a paper, order a coffee and scone and just relax. Nothing is hurried and the attentive staff (who 35

It is perfection and if there is a better place to while away the hours then it has yet to be found. The gift shop part of the visitor experience is now across from the car park, just opposite the large pond, with resident ducks who quack a welcome to all visitors. Inside the gift shop all manner of gifts are on display, from the softest cashmere clothing to the most exquisite hand-blown glass. It is a browser’s paradise and perfect if you are searching for that special gift. You can even bottle and personalise your own whisky. Every year Glenfiddich sponsors artists from all over the world, experts in their chosen field, be it art, sculpture, ceramics or mixed media. A generous bursary is offered and the artists will spend the summer at Glenfiddich, staying in company houses and drinking in (not too literally!) everything that the

Some of the past years’ completed works can be seen scattered around the well-manicured gardens and staff members are happy to point them out and give a potted history of how they came to be. All in all, Glenfiddich offers the visitor a superb day out. The tours are professional and informative; the art gallery is a must-see during the summer months; the gift shop is pure heaven for those who are searching for that perfect something and the coffee shop is everything one would wish it to be. Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day W

e all enjoy being pampered. We all love to be the centre of attention and to be spoiled, even if it is only for one day. After the long dark December and January evenings, February and March herald the advent of Spring – buds on the trees, snowdrops pushing through, lambs in the fields and the promise of lighter, warmer days. And this time of year brings two special days wherein we are allowed to have free rein and can spoil the special people in our lives. Go overboard on Valentine’s Day; shower that special person with love and affection, flowers,

a card and perhaps a romantic meal – home made or shop bought, it doesn’t matter. It’s the thought that counts. Even if you are a singleton, there are always special people who deserve flowers and a card. Go on – make their day! Mothers are extra special. To spoil your mother with breakfast in bed or a trip out to a restaurant results in the giver getting as much (if not more) pleasure as the recipient. riving along the A96 to Aberdeen you will pass the Huntly Mart. Farmers from far and wide who frequent the mart on business are well aware of the culinary delights offered by Fiona in the Market Café. Fiona Forrest has been catering at the mart for 5years now and her business is going from strength to strength. Tuesday to Sunday 8-30am– 4pm Fiona and her wonderful team will serve you breakfast and lunches or just a coffee and fancy piece. Fresh scones are baked daily and apparently there would be a riot if her home made beef steak pie was not on the menu at lunch time. 44

The Market Café is not just for the farmers, however and many visitors have already found this out to their delight and, once found, a return visit is definitely the order of the day. So if you haven’t ventured in past yet, then next time you are heading down the A96 drop in for lunch, you will be very welcome. The Market Café is totally accessible and disabled friendly, ideally situated with ample parking for cars or busses so if you are organising a day trip give Fiona a call and let her know you’re coming. Fiona is happy to oblige bus parties out with her normal opening times by prior arrangement. The café is only one of the strings to Fiona’s bow. Before taking on the Market Café Fiona started off providing outside catering and is now well renowned for her catering at weddings, afternoon teas, funeral teas, birthday parties, Burns’ suppers, cheese & wine and tipsy tea parties, in fact any

The Breakfast with Santa at the Golf Club was a huge success and they are now organising an Easter Breakfast….. Sunday Brunch: put it in your diary, more details to follow. The Golf Club can be booked for any of your events and has a capacity of 100 plus. The conservatory can be booked for smaller parties, with a capacity of 35 – ideal for a Tipsy Tea party, Birthday party or a Wedding. Just contact Fiona with details of your event and she will do the rest. Fiona and her team will do more than cook your dinner. They can decorate the venue and obviously do a fantastic job of serving your guests on the day. Fiona prides herself in purchasing as much of her produce as possible locally. Forbes Raeburn supplies her butcher meat, Stuart Gauld is her Fruit and Veg supplier and her ice-cream comes from event you can think of. Fiona’s team are regulars at the local sheltered housing complexes where they lay on afternoon tea. Fiona says “The residents thoroughly enjoy it. It’s lovely to see the smile on their faces”. Fiona and her loyal band of helpers can, and have catered for events up to 300 people If you have an event, small or large and you require catering Fiona will be happy to provide catering to meet your dietary and budget requirements. Having a party at home but just don’t have the time to do all the food preparation needed? Fiona will deliver your party food to your door, you just need to enjoy the party.

Rizzas. So if it is a stop off for a meal at the Mart, a good old knees up at the Golf Club or organising a party in the Village Hall, Forrest Catering have it covered.

Huntly Golf Club is Fiona’s latest addition to her culinary offerings. Go along on the last Sunday of every month and enjoy her wonderful carvery. Don’t forget Mothers’ Day on the 31st March!

bbie’s Sparkle Foundation is a Scottish charity providing support for children with cancer across the UK. We know how important it is to live life to the full. The aim of Abbie’s Sparkle

foundation to donate gifts and grants (we call Sparkles) giving children the opportunity to find happiness through challenging times.

Abbie’s Story. Abbie’s smile, sparkle and infectious enthusiasm lit up the room and that’s exactly how Abbie wants people to remember and celebrate her life. Abbie (15) passed away on Christmas Day, 2017, after living with Sarcoma a rare form of cancer, for four years and four months. Christmas was Abbie’s favourite day, she loved it, we believe that Abbie held on and chose the sparkliest day of the year to go. It was her sense of humour and laugh-outloud mentality, which set Abbie apart and meant she lived every moment to the full. Abbie was a vivacious and talented cheerleader who was hailed by medics as “incredible and a truly inspirational young woman”. One of Abbie’s wishes is to raise money for “Hospitals and stuff” under the charity name Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation.

In the last year 94 children have been supported with a gift or grant. In 2019 we look forward to spreading more Sparkles as well as awareness of childhood cancer and Sarcoma. Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation was the charity of the year for Marks & Spencers Elgin 2018/19 and has recently been chosen as the charity of the year for Moray Business Women and Johnstons of Elgin.

HELP HELP SAVE SAVE OUR OUR POOLS POOLS It’s a new year – and that means new resolutions. A new start, a fresh look at your life – and that includes the all-important area of health. Much has been made in both the national and regional press of late about the inexorable rise of obesity and the strain that puts on individuals and society as a whole. What we lay down today will rise up and bite us in the future. It is time for a reality check and to determine what each and every one of us can do to aspire to a healthier, more active lifestyle. Step forward the Fit Life! family. Being a member of the Fit Life! family means membership that can access swimming pools and fitness centres throughout Moray. Alphabetically listed, they are :Aberlour,Buckie, Dufftown, Elgin, Fochabers, Forres, Keith and Lossiemouth – all centres that are easily accessible, even for people living in more rural areas. One membership pass covers them all. Highly qualified fitness instructors are on site to assist and guide you through the various programmes on offer. In Buckie, for example, Mark Bruce (ex-forces Sport and Leisure Supervisor, who has worked in Moray’s leisure centres for 18 years) says

“Here in Buckie just some of the services we offer are public swimming, aqua aerobics and children’s swimming lessons. The pool is very well used and it always has been over the years. I think because we’re so close to the coast and the harbour that mums and dads see the pool as a great asset in helping their children learning to swim”.

50

Now that Moray Leisure Centre is part of the Fit Life! family, people can experience more or less the same facilities across all centres and there shouldn’t have to be any additional inductions when visiting a different Moray Council gym, as all the equipment is the same. In addition, all the programmes are similar at each facility. Everything couldn’t be better thought out. It is not just Buckie that is seeing good attendances. Dave Chapman, Leisure Supervisor at Forres Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre, has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, with the last 11 years spent at Forres. He said the introduction of Fit Life! has transformed the service they’re able to offer and has brought more customers through the door. “The main selling point of the Fit Life! scheme is convenience. One card gets the customer into all the facilities, the whole family can get involved and, most importantly, there’s no need for cash. It’s certainly brought more people through the door.” He said the centre is well-used and an important part of the community. “Although we’re not a community centre, we provide important

services to people that live here, and we are very, very busy. We have a great relationship with the school next door, who use the fitness room and swimming pool and we use their halls in the evening – it’s good to have that reciprocal partnership.” The fitness room is the most popular feature within the building, which is staffed by four full-time staff and four part-time staff. Almost all the equipment within the gym was replaced last year, including bikes, treadmills, stairmasters and cross trainers, which Dave said is a big draw. The building itself has undergone a radical transformation, with refurbishment works completed in 2017. “Basically everything that you can’t see was replaced,” said Dave, “the plant equipment, we put solar panels on the roof, the boiler was replaced. In fact one of the only things that remained was the pool; it’s still the same 1972 pool, even with the original tiles!” He added: “The best part of the job is looking after all the people who use the facilities. We get everyone from young kids learning how to swim, to older people taking part in classes. The great thing is that, for most of the activities, people can just turn up and join in”. You could not get a better recommendation for seriously considering joining up than both Mark’s and Dave’s comments. But, on a more serious note, recent news from the Moray Council paints a very bleak picture. Plans are afoot to close swimming pools; this will start with the closure of Keith and Lossiemouth but, if the current financial situation does not improve, more closures will be on the cards. We must not wait until the facility closest to us shuts its doors and all hands and voices are raised in horror. It is up to the public to support these facilities and to make the best use of them, thus ensuring that they remain open to all. If we don’t use them, then we lose them. It’s as simple as that. Membership is not expensive at £21 for individuals and £29 for families. Keith and Lossiemouth pools have been thrown a lifeline – if the public value pools then prove it! Buy a FitLife? membership and if the numbers increase by 300 across Moray Council owned pools before the end of Wednesday 20 February, the future of these pools can be secured.

Lifestyle MAG

Memberships bought at Moray Leisure Centre unfortunately won’t count but of course you can now use your Council Fit Life membership at Moray Leisure. Remember this doesn’t just apply to Keith and Lossiemouth, everyone across Moray should consider investing in this fantastic, value for money membership. Your support is much needed – it’s over to you, the general public.

Everyone should join it’s a bargain especially if you have kids. Our family use facilities about 20 - 25 times a month which aint that much and at £5 a time it would cost £100 £125 a month instead of £29. I would be willing to pay more to save the pool to be fair. for a sugar boost. Try walking poles – they not only help you ascend/descend hills and navigate tricky terrain, but take the strain off your legs alone. Take a folding or rolling sitmat – if you need a break, don’t get a cold, damp bum! If it’s wintery, pack a small flask of hot tea – a really comforting treat during a dreich day. Pack an emergency foil blanket, just in case – it’ll keep you warm should you have to stop unexpectedly. Dress for all weathers, and have extra layers, a hat and gloves for any peaks.

under 5km per hour. Perhaps start with a mostly flat route if you’re new to hiking. Try to walk at least one day every weekend. After 2-3 weeks, up your distance by half again, and choose a more hilly route so you’re walking for between 1½ and 2 hours. Keep increasing distance/ time and use your walks to explore varied terrain and scenery – you’ll be surprised at what beautiful glens are just around the corner, out of the reach of main roads. If you’re enjoying your hiking, set yourself a challenge and treat your weekend walks as training. There are some great events coming up for long distance walkers, and you might even get a medal at the end of some of them!

WELL-BEING

Mind Keeping fitter, eating better and having strong relationships are all components to a better sense of wellbeing. It seems so easy but many of us struggle to make lasting change that will make us feel good physically and mentally.

60

gym R

esearch shows that activity and learning with others who have a similar outlook and interest makes a lasting change – it makes sense, we see it all the time where people benefit from the support from being in a sports team or through weight loss clubs. For many of us worries get in the way, a fear of being judged or trying something new is a block to experiences that can transform our lives. But a local ‘Gym for the Mind’ approach is smoothing the way

Lifestyle MAG

to a new lease of life for Moray folk; everyone is welcome at events and courses available through a Moray ‘Wellness College’. A recent participant of Living Life to The Full, one of the range of courses available across Moray, shared their experiences; “The Peer Support aspect 61

WELL-BEING

Mind was undoubtedly the best aspect …being in a group of people with similar mental health experiences, most especially having training facilitators with similar mental health experiences, made a huge difference to my usual fears about seeming different and/ or being judged.” The Wellness College courses are delivered by skilled Moray folk who have used the approaches themselves and then trained to help inspire others. The aim is to have a friendly welcoming atmosphere where judgement is left at the door, a safe space for connecting with other like-minded people. This is especially important when addressing often stigmatising topics such as addiction or how to be the best parent you can, despite the fact that everyone has mental health and needs to take steps to support it. “My initial thoughts regarding the course centred around not wanting/ not feeling able to do it. It ticked a lot of my ‘avoid’ self-protective boxes,

62

including but not limited to: interaction with a group of strangers; unfamiliar, enclosed space and admitting I have mental health issues (to strangers). I’d made commitments to do everything I could to get better, including following up recommendations from my GP and my Mental Health Support Worker – instead of allowing everything to build up into a massive deal in my head, until it became impossible to do anything except hide and make excuses – when the first session arrived I summoned all of my med-assisted courage and went. As is often the case, it turned out that there really was nothing to fear. I was amongst … friendly similar folk who didn’t judge me, or try to test me, or push my boundaries.” Run in partnership with local services and organisations, the courses and events are designed by the people who know what works because they have been there themselves. Covering topics from boosting low mood, to strengthening your parenting,

gym

even getting your financial health in check and being suicide aware, courses are free with a £5 refundable booking fee to support commitment. “Each year through our Wellness College a range of local organisations work together to deliver more choice for Moray people of all ages,” explains Heidi Tweedie from Moray Wellbeing Hub, who host the Wellness College, “Having benefited from wellbeing courses ourselves, we know how important it is to be able to access courses in our own communities. Each year we aim to grow what is on offer, make it easier to book online and navigate with a timetable. The difference it has made to people’s lives is inspiring, it keeps us keen to do more and to help them involve others.”

It’s this transformation that previous course participants are so keen to share, “I really can’t recommend taking this course strongly enough, specifically to anyone experiencing anxiety and/ or depression, …but really to anyone experiencing mental health difficulties, because it provides so much support, both in terms of course content and things like a sense of acceptance and belonging in a group environment.” “We know that over the years our courses transform lives. Giving people a sense of purpose and confidence but also connecting them to their communities.” Shares Heidi, “Give it a try! You’ve nothing to lose but negative thinking!”
