After leaving Keith, Amy moved to Aberdeen and gained her BMusEdMusic Teaching Degree from the University of Aberdeen. She has achieved a remarkable amount in her life so far and everyone’s best wishes go with her for the final on the 28th January at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival.

IN BRIEF
Pet rules OK! Christmas is coming; a time of joy and celebration for family and friends. It is a time when we transform our homes with candles and decorations, cook traditional meals and – sometimes – over-indulge in all things bubbly. The preparations are centred around us but how many of us spare a thought for our pets? They do not understand why suddenly there are so many decorations throughout the house and why that enormous tree in the corner with twinkling lights is a no-go area for them. Let’s look at Christmas from their point of view. The daily routine has been thrown up in the air a bit and the humans need a spot of guidance on what is good and what is not good about Christmas for their pets. 1. Some festive human foods are poisonous to your pets. Do not feed them chocolate, macadamia nuts, raisins or onions and never, ever, give them alcohol. 2. Do not give your pets small bones to chew. They are a serious choke hazard. In addition, small bones can splinter, causing internal damage. 3. Please make sure the Christmas tree is well anchored so that any enthusiastic pet cannot pull it over. If you have a real tree, clean up any fallen needles, as these can get stuck in your pet’s paws and/or throat. 4. All the hustle and bustle, noise and Christmas music on a constant loop can prove too much for pets. Make sure there is a quiet, safe haven for your pets to escape to when the going gets too much for them! 5. Make sure that there is a fireguard in place if you have an open fire. 6
6. Be aware of the dangers of antifreeze poisoning. Mop up any antifreeze spills and be vigilant for signs of poisoning, such as vomiting, incoordination and seizures. In any event, always make sure you have your vet’s emergency number handy. 7. Christmas disrupts our daily routine. Your pet does not understand this and so please make sure that you maintain your pet’s routine. If you have a dog, make sure you walk him at the usual times. 8. Our homes look marvellous with all the sparkly decorations but these can be irresistible to pets. And dangerous! Glass baubles can shatter in their mouths and tinsel can become stuck in their intestines.
9. Keep all pets out of the kitchen when cooking. You do not want them to get under your feet, causing you to spill any hot liquids over them. 10. If embarking on a fairly lengthy journey to visit family and friends with your dog, please make sure you prepare for the journey by taking fresh water with you. 11. Fireworks can cause immense stress in pets so make sure that curtains are closed and there is enough sound in the house to muffle the bangs and whooshes going on outside. Walk your dog during daylight hours before fireworks start. 12. And finally – to reiterate the point made in number 6 – always have your vet’s emergency/out of hours number to hand. It’s not rocket science, just plain old common sense but it will go a long way in making your festive season – and your pet’s festive season – much more enjoyable.

Keith is undergoing a significant effort to help regenerate and restore its town centre. The town is looking to encourage new investments and developments in the area, making it a desirable location for new businesses to either start up or relocate
K
eith and Fife-Keith can boast new businesses opened up in only the last few months, others have undergone considerable refurbishment or relocation to larger premises. Over the past few years Keith has become a centre for arts and culture, being the first place in Scotland to be bestowed with the title of Scots Toun. This was achieved by proving how they celebrate, support and promote the Scots language in community life by means of festivals, kirk services, signage and the development of language based tourism. They are proud of their heritage and are doing everything they possibly can to encourage the usage of the Scots language. They do not lag behind in music either, with the annual Traditional Music and Song Festival, which takes place in June each year, a mere 42 years old.

DRIVING SNOW ROADS Explore Scotland’s ancient past, stunning and indescribably beautiful scenery and hospitality that is second to none.
90 miles of
Snow through S
cotland is blessed with incredible scenery. At each turn of the road a new vista opens up for the motorist, revealing new wonders. We already have the North Coast 500, a predominantly coastal route which also takes in the meandering back roads, creating diversionary loops along the way. Now meet the Snow Roads, a 90 mile journey of discovery. This is a relatively new addition to the tourist routes in Scotland and has been some four years in the planning. A wide cross-section of sponsors have been involved in the Snow Roads and there are three new scenic installations on route: sustrans; Scottish Canals; the Scottish Government; Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park; Edinburgh Napier University; VisitScotland; Transport Scotland; Scottish Natural Heritage; Scottish Enterprise and the Cairngorms National Park Authority. When planning this route, those involved used Norway as a role model. The lessons that were learned from Norway were : 20
· start with a great route · the proposed route needs more than signs and a reason to visit has to be developed · be bold and ‘fun’ in the development of new points and stopping places · develop new talent The aims and objectives were to encourage new visitors and to slow those visitors down so that they could enjoy more of the nature and culture; to encourage greater spend in the rural areas and to develop talent in young architects and landscape architects through competition. The snow roads scenic route follows the A93 from the picturesque market town of Blairgowrie north to Braemar and then on to Ballater. It then doubles back on to the A939, picking up the Highland Tourist Route via Tomintoul to Grantown-on-Spey. Along the way it crosses the Cairngorms

The Snow Roads are slow roads – deliberately so. They are not to be travelled at speed. They are there for the visitor to take time to enjoy the spectacular views and attractions along the route. sheer expanse of sky. Stay overnight – or longer – in your choice of accommodation from bed and breakfast establishments to hotels. Stop at one of the many cafés and restaurants and sample some highland hospitality. The key to getting the most out of the snow roads is to slow down and take your time – the frequent hairpin bends take care of that – just let the majesty of the landscape get under your skin. Once it’s there, it won’t let you go. To paraphrase Mark Beaumont – where else can you
Lifestyle MAG
find ski resorts, royal estates, whisky distilleries and the most beautiful scenery all within a concentrated area and a distance of just under 100 miles? There are enough places of interest to satisfy any visitor – Balmenach Distillery (famous for both whisky and gin), Well of Lecht (a commemorative 18th Century monument), Lecht Ski Centre, Corgarff Castle, Gairnshiel Bridge (part of the original network of military roads in the region), Burn O’Vat visitor centre, Crathie Kirk and Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar Distillery, Braemar Castle, Glenshee Ski Centre and the Cateran Trail, a long distance walking trail starting and ending in Blairgowrie. Three new stunning installations provide new opportunities to stop and explore the wild and beautiful Highland landscape. Near Tomintoul is Still by Angus Ritchie; at Cock Bridge you will find both The Watchers by John Kennedy and A Moment in Time by Louise Gardiner and, near the Devil’s Elbow, Connecting Contours by Daniel Smith and Philip Zoechbauer. All three installations are deceptively simple. The more you look into what this area has to offer, the more you will wish to extend your stay. There is so much to see and do. An essential vade mecum has to be the Parki Guide, a pocket-sized book published annually in April by the Cairngorms Business Partnership. It contains a wealth of information on everything that the Cairngorms has to offer. As the name implies, the snow roads are often just that, so it is advisable to keep a check on the weather conditions and heed any travel warnings. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly and can catch you out so it is better to be safe than sorry. Slighean Sneachda – go see for yourself.

ehind the scenes in small towns and villages across the country, dedicated teams of volunteers are busy checking their Christmas lights to make sure that they are all in perfect working order and meet the required standards of safety. They are the unsung heroes, out in all weathers and usually in the evenings and they deserve a round of applause for all their efforts. Larger towns require more than a team of willing volunteers, as the remit is so much more involved – and this is where the professionals come in. Have you ever wondered who the brains are behind the displays in Elgin - who designs everything and who puts it all together? The people behind the Elgin Christmas lights are Elgin

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
BID (Business Improvement District). In 2015 they were approached by John and Karren Cryle, a brand new business and very much an unknown quantity, who wished to tender for the Elgin lights. They were unlucky, as the contract had already been awarded. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, that firm had to pull out and John and Karren were asked if they would like to step into the breach. They did a magnificent job and have been responsible for the Christmas lights ever since. How did it all begin? What prompted John and Karren to immerse themselves in all things Christmassy? In 2015 John decided that he needed a change. He left his career as a psychiatric nurse, managing care homes in Glasgow, to embark upon something completely different. Both he and his wife, Karren, decided that they wanted to run their own business and after a visit to the Franchise Exhibition in London where they considered various options, including running a coffee shop, they plumped for the Christmas Decorators as the one that would excite them and get their creative juices flowing. Karren has always been a bit of a Christmas-a-holic and her passion has rubbed off on husband John over the years, transforming him from a self-confessed bit of a ‘bah humbug’ into an enthusiastic fan of the festive season. Daughter Eilidh, together with her fiance Colyn, make up the rest of the family team. They also have highly qualified technical experts who assist in the installations, making sure that everything is perfect. It is not only Elgin, however, as they have also decorated the tree in Rothes, as well as businesses in both Broughty 26
Ferry and Inverness. They are responsible for a very large geographical area from Wick down to Perth and will travel long distances in order to make absolutely sure that everything runs smoothly. Together they offer a tailored professional service that is second to none. They understand only too well that while Christmas is the time of year for family and friends to get together, it can also be a very stressful time when, quite often, everything seems to go wrong. They are the right people to take your home or business and transform it into a magical wonderland. At an initial consultation, during which the client’s needs are discussed, Karren will produce a quote which has been tailored to the client’s requirements, budget and colour scheme. Internally, they can provide garlands for decorating fireplaces, banisters and doorways and externally they can transform entrances, rooflines, bushes, shrubs and trees from 3’ to 70’ in height. Everything will be installed at a pre-arranged date and will be removed in January – you have to do nothing but enjoy what they have created for you. There is absolutely no stress whatsoever.
KEITH
But it is not only Christmas that they cater for. Events, parties and weddings can be catered for as well. Any special occasion can be made that little bit more special by the addition of carefully thought out and planned decorations. Whatever your requirements and your budget, John and Karren can provide that little bit extra which will transform your event and will stay in people’s memories forever. From small beginnings in Colorado to a world-wide franchise. The Christmas Decorators started with one woman decorating her own home for the festive season, with the results being admired by friends who then commissioned her to decorate their homes. And so the business grew, until the demand was so great that there was no option but to franchise the business.

CHRISTMAS TREES
There’s nothing like the real thing... Fabulous Fir! If you’re heading out with family or friends to pick your own fresh cut Christmas tree this year, be sure to consider the glorious Nordmann Fir. This is a year-on-year favourite. The Nordmann Fir has a reputation for excellent needle retention - so less spiky socks or heavy hoovering! It has wondrously lush, glossy and rich green needles that are soft and dense, making it easy to decorate. Importantly, Nordmann Fir’s have strong branches which will support your lights and decorations, even if you get a little carried away!
It’s important you know how to look after your real tree to keep it looking fresh well into the New Year.
Of course if you decide to buy a fresh potted Nordmann Fir you simply need to ensure it is kept in a cool spot and well watered when it is inside. The bonus of the potted version is of course that you can simply transfer this to the garden after the festive season and let it live on for next year!
We hope your Christmas tree will be surrounded by family, friends and fun. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the whole Threaplands Team!
Threaplands’ top tips for tree care: 1. Remove any netting as soon as you get home – heat will build up inside a netted tree and cause needles to drop sooner. 2. Make a fresh cut of about half an inch into the base of the trunk – this will help it absorb water and stay fresh. 3. Stand your tree in a water-holding tree stand (available at the garden centre) – these will provide a good size water reservoir (trees thrive on approximately 1-2 litres of water a day) and also offer stability for your tree. 4. Keep your tree as cool as possible – keep it outside until you are ready to bring it indoors and decorate it.

la perfection! What do you get if you mix the spicy dishes of the north of Africa with a touch of all things French? An unforgettable taste sensation. Sami, chef/patron at Le Sel et Poivre in Fife-Keith cleverly blends the main ingredients of his heritage and his birthplace and has created an innovative menu that can be enjoyed by all.
S
ami was born in France, although his parents are both Tunisian. Tunisian cooking is a wonderful combination of French, Arabic, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours, rich in herbs and spices; chillies, garlic, lemon, caraway, cumin and coriander all come together to create not only visually appealing dishes but dishes that will excite your tastebuds and will open
your mind to the limitless possibilities of fusion cuisine. Sami gained experience of the flair and presentation for which French cuisine is so well renowned, then spent time working back in his Tunisian homeland learning all that it had to offer. It was there he met his Aberlour born wife and we can thank her for bringing Sami to Scotland. Before starting his own venture, Sami worked in several local hotels and restaurants and then, when he gauged the time to be right, ventured out on his own. Le Sel et Poivre is a small, intimate fully licensed restaurant in the Fife Arms Hotel in Fife-Keith. Although it has only been open for a short while, there are already very enthusiastic reviews, with the majority of the diners

declaring it ‘excellent’. And it is no wonder, as Sami is a perfectionist of the first order. He will not allow any dish to leave his kitchen unless he is completely satisfied with its quality and presentation. Word of such dedication to his craft is spreading quickly and people are travelling to Le Sel et Poivre from both the local and not-so-local postcodes. Rumour has it that it is advisable to book in order to avoid disappointment! Well done Sami and may your business grow from strength-to-strength. 37

ART EMMA HENDERSON
All bound for
moo moo From airline pilot with easyJet to artist and creator of instantly recognisable animal prints: not many people can lay claim to such a shift in their working lives. But it is one that Emma Henderson has achieved with remarkable ease. She has always been arty and at one time studied Art for International Baccalaureate; however, once she had achieved this, the paint brushes were laid down and not picked up again for a considerable length of time. Fate sometimes can deal some strange cards and it was while recovering from a bout of flu earlier this year that, bored stiff and restless, she toyed with the idea of painting again. The subject matter she had in mind was a cow. Emma rummaged in her daughter’s room and found both cartridge paper and a small box of watercolours and set to. Nothing to lose - and everything, it turned out to gain. The result pleased her and, proud as punch, Emma posted it on Facebook. Moo was born. 42
T i
land From Moo the cow, Emma has tried her hand at other animals to great acclaim. She names all her paintings after her friends: hedgehogs, sheep, roosters and dogs have featured in her highly individual prints. She has also done a touching ‘tribute’ Paddington Bear to mark the sad passing of Michael Bond. Emma’s originals and her Giclee prints have been sold all round the world, from New Zealand to America and Canada and all across the UK – and have been sold mainly through word of mouth and her Facebook page. She is in the process of setting up a web page and, once she relocates back to the family home in Kinloss in January, there will be further plans in the pipeline. These include making calendars as well as her distinctive watercolours. She will also take the plunge and try her hand at mugs, aprons and tea towels. Quality will continue to be the keyword in everything she does. Any profit from selling her prints and cards goes to charity and, to this end, Emma has produced a set of 4 limited edition Christmas cards to raise funds for a disabled children’s holiday camp (heswallcamp. org.uk). People have asked Emma how she manages to find the time to fit in a busy career along with her painting and her answer is that a pad of paper and a tin of paints take up minimal room in a flight bag - and there is always inspiration to be found no matter where in the world you find yourself. COFFEE
Fancy a great
cup of coffee?
Espresso or flat-white, full-bodied or mild - earthy or tart... knowing your cortado from your capuccino is a must these days and not long ago you would have pushed to get a good coffee in Moray. Today, your choice is off the scale from small, cosy coffee shops to specialist suppliers - they are all here on your doorstep
T
he earliest credible evidence of coffee drinking appears in the middle of the 15th century in the Sufi shrines in the Yemen. Here, in Arabia, coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed, much in the same way that we do now. By the 16th century coffee had reached Persia, Turkey and North Africa and from there it was only a short journey to Europe and the rest of the world. Not that long ago, ordering a cup of coffee in Britain presented you with very few options. A cup of instant with a jug of cold milk on the side; a well-used British Rail-style silver pot with a spout that never wanted to play along; a mug that held what could have been either tea or coffee, usually dispensed from rather large urns or – at best – a cafetiere that contained a darkish liquid that you could see daylight through. Aaargh. What treatment to mete out to one of the most popular drinks in the world. Thankfully, times have changed and we can now find numerous

outlets on our town centre streets that not only provide a delicious beverage but dress it up in all sorts of disguises. No more the humble cup of coffee, oh no. Now you can have an Americano, an espresso, a latte, a cappuccino, a caffe macchiato, a flat white and all manner of concentrated shots of varying flavours can be added as an afterthought. Gosh, such choice!

The archetypal coffee shop of the 60s and 70s, complete with bearded guitar player, has been replaced by the specialist outlet, usually found as franchises on every high street and usually imported into this country from America. They offer any amount of varieties of coffees, either to sit in or take away. If sitting in, these are usually accompanied by nibbles which have been specially manufactured to meet the company’s exacting standards and image. So, as you sit sipping your espresso and nibbling on biscuits that are redolent of almonds, you can be forgiven for thinking that you are whiling away time in some Italian village instead of

Such is the power of presentation. But, wait a minute! That monopoly held for so long by the franchises is being threatened (in a very quiet way, it must be said) by the artisan shops that are slowly becoming a feature of our towns and cities. Specialist coffee roasters are springing up and are producing some excellent products. Some purely sell the beans; others roast them, grind them and offer the product in their own coffee shops. Some have bakeries attached, most can do mail order through the internet; but what they all offer is something completely and refreshingly different to the usual franchise outlets.

A TRIBUTE JOE BRANDIE
So long and thanks for all the
Memories...
Are you going to Joe’s?” “Great. See you there”. Cheerful exchanges between friends, uttered time without number. But, sadly, no more.
54
Joe was a lover of dogs, keeping a large container full of dog biscuits behind the bar.
I
n the early hours of Sunday, 24th September, Joe Brandie, landlord of the quirky and iconic Fiddichside Inn passed away in Aberdeen’s Royal Infirmary and with his passing went an era, the likes of which we will never see again. No Joe to greet his friends and customers has left the residents of Craigellachie – and also the wider world – somewhat adrift. Without being aware of it, Joe was the kingpin in his village and his tiny pub was the central meeting place. People would travel for miles to see him because their friends had told them that, when in Craigellachie, you must visit the Fiddichside. For those who are not familiar with this tiny, caught-ina-time warp pub, the Fiddichside Inn was originally built as refreshment rooms for men who worked on the railway (part of the old station platform can still be seen across the river) and was bought by Joe’s late wife’s family in 1919. It is exceedingly small, with bar stools along the length of the counter and benches along the walls. Put 20 people in there and you have a crush. Nothing has changed inside for many years – in a way it is like a living museum, with all the original artefacts that would have been present in 1919. Joe (and Dorothy before him) did not believe in having music playing or televisions blaring; as far as they both were concerned the pub was a meeting place where people met and chatted. Japanese film crews have visited; German newspapers have written articles; Swedish businessmen have sent Joe and Dorothy a framed photo montage of their
Lifestyle MAG
memorable times at the pub; English fishermen, Yorkshire butchers, Irish fishing tackle shop owners – the list goes on and on – and each and every group would come because of Dorothy and, latterly, Joe. How to describe Joe? From a physical point of view, pretty easily. Not an over-tall man, Joe was always immaculately groomed. His snow white hair, twinkly blue eyes with an everpresent hint of humour and a demeanour that was both childlike and worldly-wise endeared him to all who met him. All the ladies loved Joe and all the men respected him. People were drawn to this remarkable man for all the qualities that you could not see. Not one to trumpet his own achievements, Joe quietly got on with helping others and doing everything he possibly could for his community. Joe was a lover of dogs, keeping a large container full of dog biscuits behind the bar. Also, behind the bar, was a drawer that must have had unfathomable depths as Joe would produce newspaper cuttings and photographs to illustrate one of his stories. New Year’s Days were legendary, with the tiny bar area crammed to overflowing, the fire blazing in the grate, music from an accordionist (or whichever musician happened to be passing) and a mix of locals and visitors creating long lasting memories. It seems ineffably sad that no more will we see the smoke from the two chimneys rising into the winter skies, nor see the welcoming light over the red front door, which signalled that Joe was in, ready for business. His laconic greeting of “och, it’s yourself” will not greet you any more, neither will the “bye folks” send you on your way. Those who did not meet him have missed out on one of life’s great pleasures; those who knew him miss him dreadfully and are thankful that he was a very large part of their lives. We realise that your work here is done Joe, whilst ours is ongoing. We thank you for all the memories. We shall treasure them and will continue to talk about them for many years to come. Good night, dear friend. And God bless. 55
HEALTH & WELL-BEING
To jab or not to jab... The clocks have been put back and the nights are drawing in. Winter is approaching on Arctic winds and with it comes the usual ailments – the head colds, dry itchy throats, sneezing and runny noses – that make life totally miserable. All colds are viruses but no cold can develop into the flu. Colds can last a week but flu can continue for months and can even develop potentially life-threatening complications, such as pneumonia. Certain groups of people, such as the over 65s, pregnant women, children and adults with an underlying health condition are potentially at risk. It is recommended that a yearly vaccination is given to reduce the spread of the known viruses and also to help build up the body’s resistance. The flu vaccine is the best protection
we have against an unpredictable virus and studies have shown that the flu jab will help prevent you getting the flu. It will not stop all flu viruses but if you do get the flu after having the vaccine, it is very likely to be much milder and short lived than it otherwise would have been. FLU JABS ARE AVAILABLE AT BISHOPMILL PHARMACY No appointment necessary but it is advisable to phone to check availability. Home visits can be arranged if necessary. AND remember to order your prescriptions in time for Christmas as health centres will be closed. BISHOPMILL PHARMACY will be open Christmas Day 12-2pm; Boxing day 11am-1pm; New Years Day 12-2pm; 2nd January 11am-1pm

It’s cold, dark and dreich outside. Do you resign yourself to sitting in front of the telly and then wonder why you’re so tired? No! Instead, choose to boost your metabolism and avoid cabin fever. Slip on your trainers and a head torch, and reclaim the outdoors on these cold winter nights!
Run social If you’re new to running, join a group. There’s nothing like jogging as you chat and get to know new people. Before you know it, the session is over and you’ll have hardly noticed the effort you’ve put in! In this way, running with a group can help to improve your pace and stamina too. Little and often Make 30 mins once or twice a week to go running. You’ll soon start to feel the difference as you improve. If you can’t find 30 mins, shorter sessions are still beneficial, but it can take the first couple of kilometres for you to warm up properly and find your stride. Keep it up and if you can, add in more sessions and gently extend the time/distance. Best foot forward… Getting your gear right is a process of trial and error, but here are some pointers if you’re new to running in cold weather: • Illuminate – get a headtorch, even if you plan to run in streetlit areas. It’ll help you pick out any uneven ground or obstacles like potholes, as well as help you be seen by vehicles and pedestrians. Set it to flash for maximum visibility – think of it like the bell on your bike. If opting to run on roads or trails away from streetlights, choose one that’s 3000+ lumens to help you see clearly; bright CREE style headtorches have become much cheaper in recent years, with lots of options online.

Prepare to feel chilly for the first 10 minutes - and run through it.
• Be safe, be seen – be sure to wear something bright, ideally hivis, and definitely with reflective details so that other road or trail users can see you long before they get close. • ‘Start bold, start cold!’ Sage advice passed on to me by a more experienced running friend! Despite the temptation to dress warm when it’s frosty out, bear in mind that you’ll be raising your body temperature dramatically as soon as you start moving. Prepare to feel chilly for the first 10 minutes and run through it. You’ll soon be comfortably warm but hopefully not needing to stop to shed layers. 57
FEELGOOD FITNESS WITH PETRA • Warmth where you need it most. Check the conditions and forecast. Some runners are happy to get wet and run through it, but you may prefer a water repellent outer layer. If the rain’s icy, wear a hat; it’s hard to retain body heat, even when moving, if your head is chilled. • Carry a small emergency kit, especially if you’re out on your own – it should be able to fit in a pocket. Your phone; a gel sachet or something with glucose should your sugar levels dive; and a foil emergency blanket to keep warm if something really unexpected happens. • Running, not skating! You might normally wear flat trainers for road running, but if you’re thinking of branching out in the winter months, consider a pair of trail shoes. They’ll have better grip over squidgy mud, dead leaves and snow. No shoes will remove the potential to slip though, so keep your eyes on the path and pick your way around ice.
Discover a hidden wintry world You’ll see nocturnal animals, beautiful glittering frost, moonlight on snow, and fabulous starry nights where the constellations really shine out. Don’t stop for long though – jog on! Petra Pennington

The loan ranger Putting the needs and interests of farmers and crofters sits at the heart of the plan I published in September to stabilise CAP payments and entitlements. A clear payment schedule for all CAP schemes will be provided. And all eligible farmers and crofters have been offered an interest free loan worth 90% of their 2017 Basic Payment. The first loan payments were made in October – well ahead of schedule and earlier than ever before. The loan scheme will inject nearly a quarter of a billion pounds into rural communities, including in Moray, providing financial security over winter. With adverse weather this autumn resulting in early wintering
Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy and Connectivity
of livestock and an inability in some areas to maximise silage and straw harvests, effectively receiving basic payments early can only help cash flow. Anyone who did not manage to apply for a loan in autumn may still be able to do so. The RPID office in Elgin can guide anyone on the process and what to do. I also intend to substantially improve customer service and experience through clear customer service standards, more effective communication processes with farmers and crofters, and an IT platform that is both reliable and meets customers’ expectations. We will also encourage and support all remaining Single Application Form paper applicants to
apply on-line from 2018. This will help reduce overall error rates and improve efficiency in processing applications. It is all designed to move CAP payments on to a more secure footing and get payments to farmers and crofters more effectively and efficiently in the year ahead. On which note, I want to take this opportunity to wish all Lifestyle readers a restful and peaceful festive break and a Guid New Year.

MUSIC
I’m Amber. I’m Amber, 18, and a musician, but a musician with high functioning autism. A year ago I received my diagnosis, and was told that being female, and having such a strong passion in music to turn to when I’m struggling, masked my difficulties for years. This wee article explores my relationship between autism and music. I will try to explain my journey which begins when I felt like the odd one out amongst my friends, to stopping gigs due to my struggles, and now as I experience complete pleasure and enjoyment during gigs and the great friendships I have formed.
F
rom a young age I have had a strong interest and a passion for music, but for a style which differed from my peers. Unlike the stereotypical kid who would often listen to pop or rock, I was fixated with Scottish traditional, contemporary and folk music. This led to me being called a granny for watching soaps and liking ‘old people’s music’! This was one of the first things that made me feel isolated with my school friends. Growing up near Fochabers in the north east, I have

MUSIC come into contact with some amazing people. Receiving lessons from wonderful tutors – Amy Stewart, then local star James Alexander, and following retirement Alexander Davidson. I have received a couple of lessons from Charlie McKerron and have been influenced by my grandad, a former pipe major and owner of a BEM (British Empire Medal). My family support continues with my lovely Aunt Fiona Davidson – I have been lucky enough to bring home some trophies with her’s and my teacher’s name on. Hearing music was one thing, but playing it was a whole new insight which engaged me into a feeling I never felt before. My playing progressed and from about 11 years old I started competing. Through this I have met some lovely people and made new friendships. As time progressed my brain continued development and when I started competing more regularly, attending concerts and playing at gigs, I began experiencing things which interfered with the almost perfect connection with me and music. Brain development continued impacting me and my experiences – not always in the best way. Over the past 2 years I have experienced a dramatic change as to how I feel and cope in musical environments. I began to feel unable to socialise effectively, nor able to be comfortable in a room of people for long, even at a gig or concert. The main triggers that impacted me were
64
socialising, noises and visual movement and lights. I had to stop playing in the band because I got quite upset with the fact that something was impacting on my connection with music, and in many situations negatively. I continued to become more sensitive to various things but I found coping mechanisms. Through the support of many people, including musicians, professionals and others, I discovered strategies to minimise the effect some things would have on me. Key issues I had to overcome were noise, changes and movement. Noise was only an issue if the level of live music was at an extent which I couldn’t focus on talking, but if it was at a break at a concert or gig, I would often use headphones and play music to calm me down as it was all too much to process. Struggling with changes was probably the first thing I felt I could deal with. I now have a set of questions to ask myself to avoid panicking over uncertainty. Visual stimulation causes me to get quite tired but I just have to keep telling myself to stay calm. I use a stress ball if there are lots of people around and I stay close to someone I know. Focussing on something else re-trains my brain so I don’t associate triggers and certain situations with stress. This has really helped me particularly in the last year. Adapting my response to these issues has really helped. I have continued to make fantastic friendships through music and I have been able to get back into playing at concerts. There are still many triggers to overcome, but it’s how I let them affect me. My passion for music will determine my success and happiness. I strongly believe music is a therapy. Mental health issues affect many people, but it is not talked about enough. People should be aware of how to recognise issues and how to help symptoms. I’d highly encourage people to feel they can talk to someone as there will be people out there who understand and are willing to help – I’d be more than happy if anyone wanted advice or a chat. Music has clearly been my therapy. It’s what I turn to when things are tough, and I might not be the player and enthusiast I am without it. I have recently started a degree in psychology at the University of Stirling and in the future I wish to use my knowledge and experience to help others, particularly children and teenagers with developmental disorders. I am so thankful to those who I have met and helped me on my journey and I’m really excited for what the future holds.

A nice round 50! Alan Paterson has been one half of the partnership that is Still Life Gallery in Aberlour. He has seen numerous maps of whisky distilleries but they all seemed to be affiliated to a particular distillery chain. Seeing a gap in the market for an independent whisky map of Speyside, Alan set about painting one of his own, that would contain images of all the distilleries. This new map includes Keith and Forres and when Alan counted all the distilleries depicted, he found that he had a nice round figure of 50.
