EDITORIAL —

Stylish retreats for inspiring timeouts Since 2001 we have been searching for the new, the aesthetic, the inspiring. Looking for places, experiences and people that broaden our horizons, appeal to our senses and inspire our thoughts. When we find what we are looking for, we come to rest. Then we have discovered one of the hotels that we would like to introduce to you as a Lifestylehotel. Lifestylehotels™ takes you to places where you are allowed to unfold. Not only discover new places, but also discover yourself. The world we would like to take you to, is a world of allowing and mind fulness. Mindfulness is more than a buzzword in many of our member hotels. Farm-to-table concepts, the support of local artists, a particu larly resource-conserving operation and handling of the hotel, or the meditative experience of nature are just a few examples of the inno vations of our member hotels. The demand for aesthetics and quality is and remains central to our vision of a modern hotel industry, but more mindful and sustainable in the sense of the new spirituality. Behind all this are ideas and above all people - our hoteliers - who create something unique with their honest efforts. We want to under stand their vision in order to continue telling their stories. At some point, we start searching again, put out our feelers and activate our s en- sors, because new things are always being created and existing things are changing.

DAMÜLS | AUSTRIA

Alpenstern Panoramahotel Indulgence and relaxation at the highest level At the Alpenstern Panoramahotel in the Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg, rest and relaxation are a priority. The hotel offers a breathtaking view of the idyllic mountain landscape of Damüls. The distinctive modern yet timeless design by architect Johannes Kaufmann and Tyrolean interior designer Stefan Ghetta, pro vides the Alpenstern with a uniquely cosy flair. Thanks to the high-quality materials and the homely atmosphere, the hotel invites you to relax and let go. You will find peace and coziness, paired with hospitality. The Bischof and Steinfeld families, and their hotel team, provide friendly personal care and attention on your summer holidays and winter vacations. In particular Bertram Bischof, who has already converted the original guest house into a hotel and then together with his daughter, son and son-inlaw expanded it into the current hotel, is the good soul of the house and indispensable for the guests. Peter Bischof and Sandro Abel treat their guests to traditional, but newly interpret ed dishes in one of the three hotel restaurants: the Restaurant 1580 for house guests, the à la carte Restaurant „Genusshalde“ and the gourmetrestaurant “Löffelspitze” Fine Dine & Cocktails.

16

From the sun terrace, you have a unique view of the mountain peaks of the Damülser Horn, the Zitterklapfen or the Zafern horn. Aperitifs and cool drinks can be enjoyed in the Bar Novum, where unusual and creative cocktails are created on a world-class level. Those who feel more at home in the world of wine are in good hands with the hosts and sommeliers Corina and Maximilian Steinfeld. The informal atmosphere invites to a relaxed wine tasting evening. Tranquility awaits you in the adults-only spa area of the Alpen stern. Here you immerse yourself in a world of deceleration, for a refreshed mind and a regenerated body. In the Alpenstern SPA above the rooftops of Damüls, guests are pampered with com plete tranquility and pleasant warmth. Families can enjoy their own textile family sauna on the ground floor. STORY

Alpenstern Panoramahotel, Damüls: Retreat & space We will generally only allow ourselves to fall if we know that we’ll be caught safely – and that’s what we get at the new four-star superior Alpenstern Panoramahotel in the Bregenzerwald forest, where we land in a safe heaven of relaxation, enjoyment, culinary delights and sustainability. The host family at the Alpenstern Pano ramahotel still takes it upon themselves to personally ensure that guests want for nothing on their holiday. Father Bertram Bischof and his family used the enforced break last year to turn their hotel into a new power place, a place where we feel an overall sense of well-being. This is achieved not just thanks to their hospitali ty and the familial atmosphere, but main ly by the modern timber construction designed by architect Johannes Kaufmann and interior designer Stefan Ghetta. In collaboration with the hotel owners, 2020 saw the pair create a setting that prioritis es relaxation, nature and sustainability. Cuisine and vistas In the restaurant, we’re spoilt by Ber tram’s son Peter Bischof personally. Along with his team, he reinterprets traditional dishes and serves them beautifully on the sun terrace, which looks out towards the mountains. Bertram’s son-in-law, sommelier Maximilian Steinfeld, gladly recommends we try one of his handpicked wines. “Almost 90% of our wines in our wine list are from Austria. Our home country offers such a variety that it’s not necessary to fly in wines thou sands of kilometres from around the world,” explains the husband of Bertram’s daughter Corina, the kind-hearted soul of the hotel. “But of course, some wines from the Old World cannot be missing and the remaining 10% are from Italy and

20

France.” And in order to really anchor the sustainability concept in the hotel cuisine, Peter ensures that regional, seasonal products are used in the kitchen as much as possible and that no part of an animal ever goes to waste. Nature and relaxation It doesn’t matter whether we’re planning to head straight out from the hotel onto the slopes in winter or treat ourselves to some fresh, pure mountain air during a long summer hike, there’s a path to relaxation for everyone at the heart of the Bregenzerwald forest. The host family is also happy to show us their favourite places in Damüls, and there are options to climb one of the steep trails to the summit, have breakfast on the mountain and book a guided ski tour in the great Alpine outdoors. The Bischof and Steinfeld families are always available to guests for advice – after all, almost all of them grew up here so they know their home better than most. Warmth and comfort Back at the hotel, the soothing wellness area awaits with pools, saunas and many a tranquil spot. In our fluffy bathrobes we look out across the surrounding moun tain landscape and, just for a moment, lose ourselves in the silence. A feeling of warmth spreads within us and provides just as much energy as our outdoor

adventure. Good to know: part of this warmth that can be felt throughout the hotel comes from the hotel’s own heat recovery system. This means that at the Alpenstern, we can enjoy ourselves while being in harmo ny with nature at all times, as well as preserving the environment for future generations.

“A variety of culinary delights to please the eye and delight the palate”.

Gradonna****s Mountain Resort Exclusive location and superb architecture The Gradonna****s Mountain Resort with its 41 chalets and the hotel is located directly on the Kals slope in the Großglockner Kals-Matrei ski area. The designer alpine hotel at an elevation of 1,350 metres offers pure natural pleasure inside and outside. The wood shingle facade and the large window fronts allow the landscape to “flow” into the hotel. The materials and colours of nature define the interior down to the smallest detail. Local spruce, stone pine, linen and loden create a pleasant atmosphere. Kals marble and wood sculptures award the resort an exclusive but down-to-earth flair.

and a kid’s club offers indoor and outdoor pools as well as a solar-heated natural swimming pond that covers 700 sqm. The buildings should not only be preserved, but be showcased in a design that would breathe new life into their walls. The new design compliments their brutality with elegant interventions and transform their austere functionality into a place of calm, comfort and relaxation. A complimentary palette of concrete, steel, timber and engineered glass ensures that new construction elements tread lightly, leaving the existing buildings relatively untouched and retaining their strong presence.

The 115 rooms, 41 wooden chalets and twelve suites in the hotel tower offer a direct view of the Großglockner and 60 further 3,000-metre-plus peaks in the Hohe Tauern. The carfree resort with about 3,000 sqm of wellness, bathing and sauna landscape

STORY

Gradonna****s Mountain Resort, Kals am Großglockner: Time to recharge Silence, Reflection, Views – these are the names of the established power places to be discovered from May to November in the forest surrounding the Gradonna****s Mountain Resort in Kals am Großglockner, East Tyrol.

The guest‘ skin benefits from the pure mountain source water and all of the herbs that can be collected right outside the hotel. After all, “Herbs do their best work where they grow”, as the wellness team at the Gradonna believes.

If you’re looking to explore nature and experience it with all your senses, there’s no better place to do it than the Hohe Tauern National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in the Alps. At 3,798 metres high, the Großglockner is in good company here, with another 300 peaks in the National Park also surpassing the 3,000-metre mark. At the gateway to this jaw-dropping alpine landscape in East Tyrol, you’ll find the Gradonna with its four-star superior hotel and 41 cosy luxury chalets. The perfect place for summer als well as winter vacation.

Sustainable cuisine Regionality and seasonality are also im portant in the kitchen. Award-winning chef Michael Karl and his team treat guests at breakfast, lunch and dinner with Tyrolean specialities, elevated with a Mediterranean twist and herbs from the kitchen garden to create a top-notch gastronomical experience that nourishes both body and mind. Food, which is picked by hand by Tyrolean mountain far mers, can also be found in the Gradonna’s exquisite delicacy, so there’s no longer anything to get in the way of you having a tasty snack in your chalet or a picnic in the forest.

Natural luxury The resort is spectacular proof that luxury and protecting nature can work hand in hand. Carbon-neutral bioheat, close part nerships with regional partners and local producers and the vegan cosmetics brand MAGDALENA‘s (made in Tyrol) are just some examples of the close relationship with the nature.

“In turn, we enjoy the freedom of the silence and breathe in the fresh, clear air, which encourages us to go out and adventure and allows us to sleep much better at night”.

50

Adventurous tranquility While for some this might mean clim- bing the via ferrata or a summit tour, for others it’s an hour’s yoga session or a massage. Thank goodness the Gradonna caters for the relaxation of active holidaymakers and wellness fanatics alike. Both will find what they’re looking for when it comes to natural recharging, be it at the summit of the Großglockner. In the expansive pool complex or at one of the new power places in the forest. Young and old should keep their eyes peeled – with a bit of luck, you’ll see chamois, bearded vultures and blue gentians. For children in particular, the forest is a place of fantasy and experimentation, and us grown-ups would probably also benefit from spending more time allowing sand to trickle through our fingers, investi gating mud with sticks and creating art with leaves in the summer season.

In winter the Gradonna****s is directly located at a slope of the Großglockner Resort Kals/Matrei. With the astonishing ski-in/ski-out experience the Gradonna is the best place to combine adventourous days on the sloples with relaxing wellness experiences. Next time, at the Gradonna!

The combination of sustainability and luxury is something that has been perfected at the Gradonna, such as for example the use of energy efficient induction hobs and the use of regional suppliers and local farmers.

Charmingly unconventional, the Sepp is exceptionally unexpected.

71

STORY

Hotel Sepp, Maria Alm: Sepp, the hotelier The Salzburg resident from Maria Alm has a laid-back and likeable demeanour, and he’s younger than you might expect. You wouldn’t think at first glance that Josef Schwaiger, also known as Sepp, runs three hotels and a concept store, but he does, and he does it with immense passion, even more creativity and huge success. Despite this, the passionate architect re mains as down-to-earth as the rest of the extended Eder/Schwaiger family, many of whom work for the business. Sepp grew up at the main hotel, the Hotel Eder, which was built by his grandfather in the 1960s out of a stable in the heart of Maria Alm. So in the 1980s, the kitchen and guest areas were young Sepp’s playground, meaning hospitality isn’t just a way of life, it’s also in his DNA. Sepp: wild at heart “But I wasn’t interested at first,” he ex plains. “I wanted to build houses, went to a technical college and then studied architecture at uni.” His response to the question as to what encouraged him to return home is a smile: “The odd cocktail party,” which he had with friends during his wild mid-twenties in a bar he opened in what was an empty back room of Hotel Eder at the time. It wasn’t just a success, it also provided him with so much joy that Sepp decided to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors. Luckily for us, otherwise Maria Alm would today be a couple of attractions worse off.

72

Sepp: a man of many ideas “The first thing we did was to transform the Hotel Eder into a four-star lifestyle hotel for holidaymakers who like the social side of life. That worked really well,” says the cosmopolitan Salzburger. The Hotel Sepp followed, aimed at young adventurers – complete with a rooftop sauna in a converted camper van. His brother Tom meanwhile gave free rein to his own creative streak at the Tom Almhütte at 1,166 metres above sea level, and immediately made Choupette the pug its universally adored mascot. The Schwaigers replaced the village grocers with the cool Consepp Store, and also made Maria Alm worth a visit for smaller guests when they opened Tante Frida in December 2021 – a children’s hotel where a well-travelled aunt tells crazy stories and makes many a childhood dream come true. It’s entirely conceivable that a good number of the game ideas at the newly opened family haven came from Sepp’s four-year-old son – or at least were exten sively tested by him. Because if one thing is important to Sepp, it’s his family. And even his guests can feel that, no matter which hotel in the Eder Collection they spend their holiday in.

The approximately 700 year-old house welcomes its guests with exclusive charme and excellent service - just get in and feel at home. This charming boutique hotel is worth a visit at any time of year. But during the Salzburg Festival, the Hotel Goldgasse sets the scene for an even more profound experience. Much older than the Salzburg Festival is the stone building in the charming little alleyway called Goldgasse. In the historic stone house incomparable stucco ceilings, unique frescoes, exposed wooden ceilings and original marble floors have been stylishly and subtly paired with modern interior. The 16 individ ual rooms exude an outstanding attention to detail and luxury.

An outstanding breakfast is served every day and the residence is also home to one of Salzburg’s hotspots for traditional Austrian cuisine - the Gasthof Goldgasse.

STORY

Hotel Goldgasse, Salzburg City: The stage is set “The entire city is a stage.” It is based on this vision that Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss initiated the Salzburg Festival 101 years ago. Today, the stage even extends to the exclusive Hotel Goldgasse in the beautiful old town of Salzburg. It’s back again for summer and we can hardly wait: the city of Salzburg will once again be undergoing its annual meta morphosis and transforming into one of the most prominent festival stages in the world. After the challenges of the past year, many people are longing for more art and culture in their lives, and who better to quench their thirst than the city of Salzburg during festival season? From one stage to another Anyone that doesn’t live in Salzburg or the surrounding area and also wants to carry on enjoying the spectacle in their own time and space should try booking a room in a very special boutique hotel: the Hotel Goldgasse. Tucked away in a historic alley of the same name in the old town, this hotel sets itself apart from the rest with its modern themed rooms set within a building that’s around 700 years old. It’s the only “Small Luxury Hotel” in Salzburg, and shows its dedication to the festival and the arts through its distinctive interior design concept – there’s surely no more authentic place to stay in the city. No wonder each of the 16 rooms is so fervently coveted, especially during the festival. The city’s hotels are pretty much all booked up at this time, but the Hotel Gold- gasse is a particular favourite – only here does the unique atmosphere and wonder of the cultural festival accompany you back to your own hotel room. With large-format photo wallpaper, we come face to face with scenes from previous performances and their stories: from Peer

92

Gynt to La Bohème, each depicted in an individual way. But the hotel’s interior design doesn’t just stand out for its cultur al and artistic showcase – it is also impres sive in the way it skilfully combines the old and the new.

“Salzburg is always worth a visit – even if it’s just for a stopover at the Hotel Goldgasse”. Hungry for more The Hotel Goldgasse will also spoil discerning visitors to the festival (and those who would like to go in the future) with exquisite cuisine. The hotel’s own restaurant, Gasthof Goldgasse, is one of the best in the city, and provides a premium pub-like experience unlike any other you could wish to find. In a tasteful setting, we enjoy an exceptional meal and outstanding service. The location is best known across Salzburg for its fried chicken served in a copper pot, for which only the best corn-fed chickens are pre pared according to a recipe dating back to the baroque period. Guests from out of town enjoy ordering the legendary, fluffy and light “Salzburger Nockerl” baked soufflé or a traditional Kaiserschmarrn, which the chef serves with homemade vanilla ice cream and fruity apricot roast. And so a culturally enriching day at the festival also becomes unforgettable from a gastronomic point of view and, once back in our room, we bask in our memories of a unique summer at the festival in the beautiful city of Salzburg.

The suite itself is absolutely made to fall in love with, but its eye-catcher definitely is the historically protected stucco ceiling, which is one-of-a-kind with its beauty and opulence.

Das Max, Seefeld: Urban holidays in the alps Hunting trophies on wood-panelled walls? Not at the das Max. The lifestyle hotel in Seefeld impresses guests with sleek, urban design amidst the Tyrolean mountains. Anyone looking for knick-knacks, ostentatious décor and traditional Alpine chic at the das Max will come away empty handed. And that’s a good thing, as this hotel relies on its minimal appearance to create added value from its simplicity. “das Max is the laid-back, uncomplicated and smart embodiment of clever holidaying in Tyrol,” summarises architect Alexander Meissl. He and his team took on the interior design concept in 2018 and turned the das Max into a wellness oasis that deliberately avoids all of Tyrol’s kitsch nostalgia. Nordic elegance At the das Max, luxury manifests itself in the minimalism, in the paring-back, in the essential. Danish designer brands such as Bo-Concept and Kvadrat are the perfect match, which is why the lifestyle hotel worked closely with them from the very beginning. Combined with the sophisticated lighting concept from Tyrolean company Prolicht, the team of architects achieved a balan cing act between premium quality and minimum quantity. Because less is more. Or you could call it lean luxury of the highest order, which can also be enjoyed in the wellness options on the expansive roof terrace with its sauna and relaxation area. Bistro included Right next to the entrance, you’ll find the Bistro ready to captivate both hotel guests and other visitors to the popular Tyrolean winter sports resort with its visual and culinary offering. Whether you use it as →

102

a breakfast room, an on-the-move office or a break room for the times in-between, the continuation of the minimalist design lends itself to being suitable for a number of uses and means there will be a favouri te spot for everyone. The space is still cosy despite the simple design, and there’s not hing to distract you while concentrating on your work. Such a mix can only work with refined interior design, and that’s exactly what Meissl Architects achieved.

“In the Bistro, the line between fun, entertainment, work and culture becomes blurred. This is the heart and the social hub of the hotel”. Prof. Carola Meissl-Handle

Award-winning simplicity The unique architecture of the lifestyle hotel in the Alps hasn’t escaped the atten tion of the experts. In 2020 and 2021, the das Max received two prestigious awards: the European Big See Tourism Award and the international German Design Award, whose jury was unanimous: “The won derfully simple interior looks appealingly fresh, airy and modern and creates a fee ling of individuality and a high standard of living through carefully selected and placed decorative details.” And at the das Max, everyone holidays just as they want it. Tailor-made.

SEEFELD/MÖSERN | AUSTRIA

Nidum Casual Luxury Hotel Casual luxury at the Seefeld Plateau High above the rooftops of the Inn Valley in Tyrol sits the NIDUM Casual Luxury Hotel, the perfect place for a generation of travellers hungry for life. Staying here is an absolute pleasure: designer furniture in red wood and accessories in soft natural tones from beige to lime green create a relaxing, cosy ambience. The huge window fronts elegantly leave the stage to the true star – the wonderful nature. Right behind the house lies the forest and thus access to countless cross-country ski trails in all levels of difficulty, the nearest ski resort can be reached in a few minutes by ski bus. A top-of-the range establishment, but one that puts guests at their ease: this is “casual luxury”, the design hotel’s philosophy. To round off the relaxed atmosphere there is a 1,500 sqm luxury spa facility with an infinity pool, saunas, whirlpool and quiet rooms.

104

Gourmets and gourmands will love the three different restau rant areas – after enjoying an aperitif on the sunny “Apero Terrace” or at the chilled-out champagne bar. Luxury meets casual, and elegance meets cosiness - this philosophy extends to the kitchen of the casual luxury hotel, where exacting head chef Michael Eigl produces the perfect symbiosis of traditional and modern culinary specialities.

STORY

Nidum Casual Luxury Hotel, Seefeld/Mösern: The light of the larch The only native conifer that creates a spectacular display of colour in autumn and then spends the winter bare plays a hugely important role at the NIDUM casual luxury hotel – inside and out. The autumnal Alpine landscape owes its rich golden yellow colour mainly to the larch tree. They grow up to 40 metres tall and on steep slopes, their deep roots protect us from avalanches and landslides. It’s no surprise, then, that their wood is no longer a stranger to modern architecture. Natural, robust and with expressive markings, it’s a winning raw material that’s sustainable and boasts fascinating contrasts. It has been put to good use at the NIDUM hotel in the sunny mountain village of Mösern in Seefeld, where the popular alternative to exotic wood has been paired with timeless natural stone. The result?

“A sense of cosiness in a setting where we experience the casual side to luxury”. Casual, wow & awesome In the 57 rooms at the NIDUM hotel, the seemingly rustic markings of the larch wood can be found in modern company. You’d be hard pressed to resist the soft box spring beds with their simple design, and the same goes for the view of the Al pine landscape at over 1,200 metres above sea level through the large glazed façade. In that moment, it quickly becomes clear why the rooms have names like Casual, Wow and Awesome.

106

What we don’t see is the magic sprinkled around throughout the hotel by the larch wood. Nevertheless, you can still feel the natural materials lowering the blood pres sure and having a cleansing effect. Is that what makes our day at the NIDUM so peaceful and laid back, or is it the paredback appearance with its delicate natural tones? It’s also the fact that it looks so good. And it works. Going with the flow It’s this calming and natural atmosphere that hotel manager Max Pinzger wants to maintain and foster at his sunny hotel on the edge of the forest. „Lots of our guests practise sitting still when they stay with us. They want to find peace. That was more and more difficult to do during the enforced winter hibernation in 2020, so we’ve redesigned and reconsidered concepts to surprise our guests with new highlights following the lockdown“, so Max Pinzger. Decorative objects gained strong design emphasis and the terrace in the spa area was turned into a place of well-being with soft loungers, canopy beds and sumptu ous blankets. Curling up nice and warm, we gaze out into the mysterious fog that moves in across the Tyrolean mountains in autumn, watch the snow of the Tyro lean winter glitter before our eyes and enjoy a unique view of the Inntal at the foot of the mountains. The combination of timeless architecture, luxury and comfort is what keeps drawing us back to this power place where, every season, we discover exactly what our holi daying heart really desires.

Bergland Designand Wellnesshotel Sölden: Larch and loden Inspired by the mountain landscape around the Tyrolean village of Sölden, a couple working in tourism and carpentry created a retreat where the scenery can be experienced both indoors and out. The natural colours of the Bergland Design and Wellness Hotel in the centre of Sölden blend into the mountain landscape of the Ötztal valley. This is where Elisabeth Grüner and her husband Sigi have fulfilled their dream of running a first-class design hotel in the Alps. Their starting point was an outdated traditional building in the town centre of Sölden in Tyrol. The idyllic town has a population of 3,200, and with an area of almost 470 square kilometres it is bigger than Vienna, while it also marks the start of the road leading to the World Cup glacier. Boasting glaciers, mountains, forests and pastures, the region is the ideal location for a luxury holiday.

“Boasting glaciers, mountains, forests and pastures, the region is the ideal location for a luxury holiday”. Harmonious contrasts Before Elisabeth and Sigi Grüner were able to offer their guests premium holi day experiences, there was still one bold step to take: the renovation. The building was to be transformed into something completely new, and an architectural competition was launched that was won by Salzburg firm Wimreiter & Partner, who have experience in the tourism sector. With a strong grasp of and much sensitivity to the natural surroundings, →

114

Elisabeth & Sigi Grüner

the architects devised an alpine design hotel – the first of its kind in the region. What fits in perfectly from the outside captivates on the inside with a contrast of regional and modern elements: larch, loden cloth and wool meet stone, glass and ceramics, while traditional shapes harmonise with contemporary features. Architectural highlights A total of over 1,000 square metres of ter races gives the hotel a feeling of openness and freedom. The well-considered floor plan with spacious rooms and suites of up to 212 square metres emphasises this. The only thing that can make the ambience even better is the 2,200-square-metre Sky SPA boasting panoramic views – when you take to the treadmill here, you feel like you’re running through the moun tains. Moments of wellness at the same level as the summits await afterwards in the jacuzzi. Premium features like these aren’t overdone in this special place, but rather correspond with what you’d expect from a five-star location. Animal neighbours The bells and the bleating of the sheep that graze behind the hotel aren’t that interesting at first glance. Yet they fit in perfectly with the mountain backdrop at almost 1,350 metres above sea level. What’s special is that they belong to hotel owner Sigi Grüner, who has received several awards for the way he breeds the approx. 25 ewes and 40 to 50 lambs. Their wool is used to create products that can be found throughout the hotel, while the meat is also proudly served in the gourmet restaurant. Top cuisine ranks as high as the peaks at this hotel. And anyone who doesn’t think that’s quite high enough will be able to reach Sölden’s glacier ski resort in just 30 minutes – winter wonderland guaranteed.

STORY

Gästehaus Krenn, Stainach-Pürgg: Early summer Summer hasn’t yet arrived in full force – the nights are pleasantly cool, while the day sees blossoms and blooms forming a sea of colour. It’s a truly special time in the Styrian Ennstal valley.

A few steps further on, you’ll find yourself immersed in the absolute tranquillity and privacy of the Residenz Krenn, where you can forget the pace of everyday life in one of the three generously sized apartments.

The morning air is still cool, but you can already feel the gentle warmth of the sun that sends new energy coursing through your body. It’s like there’s a magnet, drawing you away from the city and into brightly coloured nature in the country side, with its fragrances of spring flowers, energy and strength. For a day, a weekend or even longer …

“It’s like being in another world, yet you’ll feel right at home”.

Drawn to Pürgg Here at the Gasthaus & Gästehaus Krenn, adjoining pub and guesthouse, time seems to have stood still, as if you’re in an old-fashioned film. The welcoming staff make you feel like you’re in the lead role at the pub, which appears in records dating back to the 14th century. The cui sine is based on recipes from grandma’s cookbook. Lunch is a down-to-earth and hearty affair, while dinner is a touch more refined and the tables are laid for guests with vintage tablecloths.

The Greisslerei You can take this magic, or at least part of it, home with you to enjoy yourself or for your loved ones. In the Greißlerei (deli catessen), which has been designed with great attention paid to authentic features, you’ll discover delicacies and handmade treats of the finest quality – from the famous Leberknödel (liver dumplings) or Kaspressknödel (cheese dumplings) to homemade soup, bread, cakes and tarts, as well as delights from slightly further afield. But they all have one thing in common: they come from manufacturers who put their heart and soul into their products.

Persuaded to stay Whoever comes here is going to want to stay – and that’s possible, too. Right next to the pub is the Gästehaus Krenn, which was already regarded as THE place for summer visitors to come on holiday many, many years ago. You’re sure to find a favourite spot here – be it in one of the seven spacious rooms that are all fitted with modern comforts and retain beautiful traditional features, or in the various quiet areas, like the cosy library or the homely lounge. Here, you’re free to enjoy breakfast and simply while away the day, sit back and relax, and take in the spectacular view of the valley.

124

The finest materials combine perfectly with the stunning Ennstal backdrop and the mountain landscape to extend the view and soothe the soul.

Gasthaus Krenn has a long history as a guesthouse in Pürgg. Originally a tavern in the 14th century, hospitality was already very important – a core value that hasn’t changed to this day. Now it’s the perfect meeting point: for guests who love seasonal and regional Styrian culinary delights; for hikers and climbers who celebrate with a well-deserved snack; and as a gathering place for musicians who like to play folk music together in a cozy atmosphere.

Lovingly furnished, with a handpicked assortment, the Greißlerei invites you to discover the perfect souvenir, to buy a little surprise for a loved one or to get products of the highest quality for your own breakfast, snack or other personal occasion. Home-made pickles, bread, cakes and tarts - like everything in the Greißlerei Krenn, of course, carefully homemade and produced according to traditional recipes.

STORY

Sportresidenz Zillertal, Uderns: It’s all about the green Golf thrives on nature: on the lush green of the undulating landscape, and on the feeling of space that, in the Zillertal, is provided by the astounding mountain backdrop. It’s this backdrop that makes the small but perfectly formed holiday village of Uderns in the heart of the Zillertal valley – where the valley is still wide – the perfect place for a top-class golf course. The 18-hole championship course more than lives up to its ranking among the Leading Golf Courses top 14 in Austria. And you can do so in peace and quiet considering there are only 33 rooms & suites at the hotel, which means you’ll also enjoy the freedom of space off the course, too.

“At the adjoining fourstar superior hotel you can golf-in, golf-out all year round thanks to the indoor putting green and golf simulator”. Nature in, nature out The natural beauty of the mountain and valley backdrop continues at the Sport residenz, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the 3,000-metre main Alpine ridge right in front of the hotel. Before we even make it into the lobby, we spot the solar panel installation on the roof, which provides the entire building with green electricity harnessed from the power of the sun. The next thing we catch sight of are the charging stations for electric cars and e-bikes that we can hire directly from the hotel, then we step inside and take in the natural, high-quality materials such as wood and stone that can be found at every turn.

128

Relax in, relax out In addition to how good it feels to do something good, we enjoy pure luxury at the Sportresidenz Zillertal. We feel it in the spacious rooms and suites with infra red saunas and the partly private sauna as much as we do in the wellness area that spans all three floors of the building. On the ground floor, we dive off the land ing stage into the bathing pond, on the first floor, we relax in the sauna and the steam room, and the second floor takes us out to the sun terrace and the heated outdoor infinity pool, while up on the roof, a jacuzzi and relaxation area with a jaw-dropping panoramic view await. Enjoyment in, enjoyment out When it comes to cuisine, the Sport residenz also has something unique to offer. The Genusswerkstatt restaurant is located at the exciting end of the ninth green, a position that quickly turns it into the clubhouse of the exclusive golf course. The one toque and eleven points from Gault&Millau plus two forks and 85 points from Falstaff demonstrate the expertise of head chef Willy Tillian and his dedicated team, who transform local ingredients and game from their own hunting expeditions into mouth-watering delights with a healthy portion of passion. Anyone drawn in by the spectacular mountain views is able to make the most of the hotel’s location to head out hiking or snow-shoeing, depending on the season – or cruising through the countryside on an e-bike. It doesn’t matter which mode of transport you choose – pure enjoyment awaits us here, and it’s all sustainable. Thanks to its central location between the two ski areas Hochzillertal-Hochfügen and Spieljoch as well as free private shut tle service, the Sportresidenz Zillertal also makes winter sports enthusiasts’ hearts beat faster.

STORY

Almmonte Präclarum Suites, Wagrain: A simple statement That’s the Almmonte Präclarum Suites in the heart of the Salzburg mountain landscape – where holidaying is brilliantly simple, just as we like it. Maybe it’s the raw materials taken from nature: the dark stone next to the light wood, rough linen next to soft velvet, protective curtains in front of large glass façades.

“Harmony and contrasts don’t cancel each other out. Nature is proof of that”, explains hotel owner Andreas Hutz. Architecture & design Hotel owner Andreas Hutz invested blood, sweat and tears in the architecture and design of the building. The Almmon te Präclarum Suites owe their laid-back serenity and discreet elegance to him. This illusory contrast is what makes it so easy for us to be in the moment here. The moment when we wake up in our cosy box spring bed. The moment we enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains from the heated outdoor infinity pool. And the moment we’re served regional specialities in the restaurant. Simply timber Before we even enter the lobby, suites, restaurant or the spa, we’re struck by the nature-inspired appearance of the building. Its façade seems to bring the surrounding forest closer thanks to its effective timber cladding. Organic shapes such as vines and nets emphasise this effect and generate a feeling of warmth and comfort, even from the outside. A feeling of “I want to go in there”. We’re happy to accept this unspoken 138

invitation and soon notice that the con cept continues seamlessly in the interior with minimalist wooden furniture and subtle decorative pieces. Wood is used in combination with another mountain material in all areas: stone. Simply stone We encounter it in the form of granite floors with the classic salt and pepper pat tern, we discover it in the dark shadows on the walls and ceilings and marvel at the contrasts resulting from the interplay with the markings of the wood. Although stone can often seem cold in the moun tains, that’s not the case in this environ ment. At the Almmonte Präclarum Suites, it invites us to take a closer look. It’s like it’s urging us to touch it: beneath our feet in the bathroom and with our hands on the wall. And actually, it feels warm and comforting. Simply nature The harmonious silhouettes lend the building its own personality. Every area appears to tell stories, maybe our own, maybe one from the tourist region of Wagrain, which is known for its traditions and connection with nature. “Our goal is to create experiences from the needs of our guests”, summarises Andreas. And experiences are waiting here for us: both in the hotel and in the surrounding area.

OFFENBURG | GERMANY

Hotel Liberty A place where history becomes pleasure At Hotel Liberty in Offenburg, the concept of freedom is rede fined. That’s because the hotel is located in a former prison for radical visionaries and pioneers of freedom and democracy. The team from Knoblauch-Design is responsible for the transforma tion from a dreary prison to a fascinating design hotel. Thus, the historical and sensitive heritage of the building was rethought with the right portion of comfort and lightness and a careful handling of existing substance. Retreat, concentration and the moment are also needs of our contemporary society and form the philosophical basis of the design concept. The hotel with its total of 38 exceptional rooms and suites con sists of two separate buildings and a new intermediate building. The rooms and suites are distributed in the buildings, while the public area with restaurant, bar and lobby is located in the large glass cube sitting in between. On the one hand, it is a visual link between the two hotel wings, but it also symbolises the former prison yard. On an intermediate level, a living room for the hotel guests was built in, based on the former common room of

160

the prisoners. Many robust materials and dark, rough surfaces are used throughout the hotel. Many of the former cells have been connected to create more spacious rooms. The thick origi nal walls and steel doors do not let the history of the building be forgotten, but they create a new definition of cosiness and com bine with the expectations of the discerning guest. Fine parquet flooring and multiple vaults made of historic bricks, mouldings hidden in the walls now flood the old structures with warm light. Large, free-standing bathtubs and exquisite fittings as well as noble interiors turn the rooms into cosy oases of well-being paired with uniqueness. A place of comfort can also be found in the “Water & Bread” res taurant with open grill, serving contemporary local and interna tional cuisine, while the White & Brown Bar on the mezzanine floor offers local fruit brandies, gin specialities and homemade rum from Baden and many other specialities in a stylish ambi ence. Outstanding wines and small delicacies can also be tasted in the historic vaulted cellar.

AMALIADA | GREECE

Dexamenes Seaside Hotel Rough luxe experience in converted concrete wine tanks Dexamenes Seaside Hotel is located on one of the most unspoilt coastlines of the Western Peloponnese, on Kourouta Beach. The former winery, located directly on the sea front, consists of wine tanks, which have been minimally restored to retain their origi nal industrial appearance, and are laid out in two parallel rows of concrete blocks with an extension in steel frame construction. The renowned Athens architecture firm k-studio was commis sioned to redesign the former wine factory. From the outset it was clear that the strong history and raw beauty of the existing buildings should not only be preserved, but be showcased in a design that would breathe new life into their walls. The new design compliments their brutality with elegant interventions and transform their austere functionality into a place of calm, comfort and relaxation. A complimentary palette of concrete, steel, timber and engineered glass ensures that new construction elements tread lightly, leaving the existing buildings relatively untouched and retaining their strong presence.

partitions and polished terrazzo floors while elements of timber add dashes of warmth in a nod to the area’s nautical history. Dexamenes is an architectural slice of Greek trading history on the mainland’s western Peloponnese coast.

34 industrial chic suites in converted former wine tanks dating back to the 1920s are available for design-loving guests to enjoy an exceptional stay from April to October. Many of them have a wide covered terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea. The patina of exposed interior concrete walls contrasts with engineered glass

Peace and relaxation can be found in an ex wine Silo Tank con verted into a contemporary sanctuary where therapies such as yoga, sound healing and massage treatments take place.

In addition to its architectural roots, the luxury resort also focuses on regional culture and local experiences. Considering that the Peloponnese peninsula has more vineyards and grape varieties than any other region in Greece, it is not surprising that local specialities and viticulture play an essential role at Dexa menes Seaside Hotel. The kitchen prepares a variety of choices from breakfast to dinner that vary from degustation menus to hyperlocal meals with traditional references, putting in high pri ority the dietary preferences of each guest. Guest can indulge in Greek cuisine at the taverna or enjoy a drink at the beachfront bar-lounge. The boutique “Bakaliko” with local products and delicacies also embodies the regional culture of Greece.

STORY

Dexamenes Seaside Hotel, Kourouta Beach, Amaliada: Unpretentious, conscious luxury A wine factory turned into a stunning seaside hotel that truly cares about the guest experience. Owner Nikos Karaflos felt the powerful energy of the place and knew „that a hotel would have to be the next stop in the history of this place.“ Let yourself be sucked into the intriguing story of how Dexamenes Seaside Hotel – a conscious luxury resort located in the Western Peloponnese that once was a wine factory – became a highlight of hospitality. Let’s go back in time. Come on, stroll along with me: After achieving independence from Ottoman rule in 1830, Greece made currants its main export. However, following a drop in demand for the fruit in the late 1800s, the country began to explore possible new uses for its unsold currants. This gave rise to the construction of the first wineries and distilleries. A perfect example of the architectural methods employed at the time, the winery that houses Dexamenes was built on the water so that the wine could be pumped directly onto ships. The winery belonged to the „Autonomous Currants Organization“, an organization that was founded in order to face the currant crisis that broke out in Greece by the beginning of the 20th Century. In 1997 this organization quit its operation and so the winery got abandoned. The property was later sold to the Karaflos family. „Being a native, I knew the place and its history since I was a student. →

180

“I started analyzing the layouts of the Wine tanks and I decided that these spaces would be perfect for hotel rooms”. Nikos Karaflos, owner of Dexamens Seaside Hotel

In fact, when I was a student, in the context of a piece we had to do for history class I researched the topic and even met with people who had worked at this winery“, remembers Nikos Karaflos the owner of Dexamens Seaside Hotel. „In that way, I collected information about how the winery operated and how it contributed to the economy and social development of the broader region.“ The history and the vibes of the site were so strong that instinctively the owner Nikos Karaflos felt that the buildings should be preserved, this part of modern Greek history should be respected and highlighted. “ I felt that the energy exuded by these buildings was extremely powerful. I imagined how it would feel to sleep in the tanks and wake up to see the sea first thing in the morning“. He was sure that a hotel would have to be the next stop in the history of this place. And he was so right about his gut feeling. The vision of Dexamenes is that it will work as an open platform for contempo rary art, wine, cultural activity as well as a platform for giving back to the local com munity: All employees are local, only the freshest ingredients form local farmers are used and they highlight the local cul ture incorporating it in the experience of the guests. “Our guests are people that are passionate for original experiences. They love design, contemporary art, nature, wine and conscious wellbeing“. Sustainable luxury And he is quite proud of what he and his team have been able to achieve. “I am re ally proud of the concept of sustainability that has been a strong motivating factor that has followed this piece of land from the beginning: From the design approach (maintaining the existing buildings, upcycling materials, etc), to the daily operation that is as paperless as possible, with minimum impact on the environ ment and it focuses on the really valuable aspects of the guest’s experience like the reconnection with nature through unpre tentious, conscious luxury.

STORY

Locanda al Colle, Camaiore: Imbued with art Perched atop a sunny hill just outside Camaiore in Tuscany, the Locanda al Colle guesthouse is a renovated farmhouse that now boasts 12 tastefully designed rooms and suites. But that’s not all: it also has its very own art collection. We spoke to owner Riccardo Barsottelli about the importance of sharing these pieces with his guests. Why did you start collecting art and sculptures, and what was your first piece? When I bought my first apartment in London, I needed to furnish it so I started visiting the galleries in Fulham, Soho and Mayfair. My first buy was three black and white female nudes by Robert Mappletho rpe – I was very impressed by the beauty of his work. Why did you decide to share your collection with the guests at the hotel? I always wanted to have a home that was open to paying guests – a step up from a B&B but more relaxed than staying at a big hotel. So because this is a home, it had to be furnished and decorated with my own personal items. What role does the history of the region play in the growth of your collection? Having grown up in this area of Tuscany, I had been mainly exposed to classical art, and from cities around the world I filled in the modern and contemporary.

“I only realised the importance of this area when I saw it from abroad”.

210

And that’s what made me decide to come back and open a guesthouse here rather than somewhere else. This area is one of the major international sculpting centres, with Carrara’s marble quarries providing the raw material and Pietrasanta being home to skilled artisans. How important is it for you to support local artists by exhibiting their works? The sculptures here are on loan from artists working in the area, offering them the opportunity to show their work in situ and outside an art gallery. It’s also a chance for people to get an idea of how something could look in their home, and

“One of the main features of the guesthouse is giving local artists exposure”. that’s what inspires them to make a pur chase. Furthermore, it creates a pleasant and ever-changing energy throughout the property. It’s a very different experience to visiting a gallery.

Visitors to the Locanda al Colle are the personal guests of proprietor Riccardo Barsottelli.

STORY

Eala My Lakeside Dream, Limone Sul Garda: The luxury of nature The dreamlike natural setting of Lake Garda evokes images of greenery, striking mountain peaks plunging down into glittering turquoise water and a feeling of enchantment. The Eala design hotel has captured this spirit and turned it into a holistic experience. The positive impact of nature on our mood, stress levels and general well-being has long been recognised in the built environment, and the increased use of biomimicry in architecture and design is further proof of nature’s appeal. With its position on the banks of Lake Garda, the design criteria for Eala were to immerse the structure of the hotel in the natural surroundings to create a luxury experience with all the benefits that offers. Nature by design Careful attention has been paid to ensu ring that the exterior façades blend into the surroundings through careful use of materials and design features. On the road side, the emphasis is on reinterpreting the mountains through the choice of shapes, colours and materials, with different mo dules creating shadows and light effects that change throughout the day.

“A visit to Eala is a sojourn in nature”. The side facing the lake incorporates the balconies of the suites and is reminiscent of a rocky slope descending towards the water, bearing the same tones as the rock faces and playing on the shapes and contours of the mountains. Tall camphor trees punctuate the view and mimic the mountain faces. →

220

Luxury by design Within these striking yet harmonious façades, the interior continues the natur altheme. The suites are adorned with bespoke wallpaper and artworks bearing graphic interpretations of natural motifs, while large panoramic windows draw the gaze outside and place guests in the very heart of the landscape. Premium amenities including underfloor heating, coffee machines, private saunas and outdoor jacuzzis ensure a luxury feel. When hunger strikes and you absolutely must leave the comfort of your room, the extraordinarily designed dining hall, sus pended above Lake Garda with splendid views of the calm waters, offers an expe rience for the eyes as much as the palate. Wellness by design No stay at Eala would be complete wit hout being pampered in the 1,500-squaremetre luxury spa. The team uses natural products sourced from the region to send guests on a journey of self-discovery, with treatments ranging from moisture-rich facials to invigorating scrubs and massa ges. Nature again comes to the fore in the materials, shapes and colours to stimulate all the senses. As if we needed further proof of the power of nature, Eala confirms once more through its design what a privilege it is to soak up the atmosphere of the lake and rediscover tranquillity and relaxation.

Steinach Townhouse Meran, Merano: Love at first sight A designer couple from Milan tells about their love for South Tyrol – and especially for their new B&B Steinach Townhouse Meran. Roger Botti and Giulia De Andreis are a designer couple from Milan – Roger runs the branding and design agency Robilant. South Tyrol has been the couple’s second home for several years. The shared passion for interior design and art has led them to the Steinach Townhouse Meran. How did they actually get into the hotel industry? Roger and Giulia tell: “We coincidentally came to Merano when we were cycling along the Vinsch gau cycle path. We already knew South Tyrols mountains, hiking trails and its slopes … but suddenly we were surprised by Merano, this versatile small town with Central European flair and its characteris tic Mediterranean vegetation with palm trees and pines. We then spent different weekends here and during our stays disco vered the place and the surrounding area and explored the wide range of gastrono mic offerings in the area. The Steinach district conquered us from the start with its reserved atmosphere! It is located away from the hustle and bustle of tourists and offers an extremely fascinating view of the surrounding mountains.“ A unique location next to the city It was also the nearby river and the promenades that made this area their favorite corner of the city. Love at first sight The building, which is now the Steinach Townhouse, had been abandoned for years. Despite the neglected condition, the two immediately fell in love with the play

230

of light in the rooms, the moods at the different times of the day and the fascina ting views from the windows. “It wasn’t until a short time later that we discovered the architectural details – the historic doors worth preserving, the original old floors. The renovation took 2 years. The greatest difficulty lay in maintaining the old and combining it with the new”. They spent a lot of time collecting the original South Tyrolean furniture, combining them with one another and furnishing the suites with it. The perfect hideaway An ideal retreat, created for people who love places that tell a story and are not af raid of some imperfections. And for those who appreciate the comfort and the little luxuries that make life more beautiful! It was also important to the owners that the new Steinach Townhouse Merano should also be run professionally on site – that’s why they thought about Katrin Schnitzer to run their B&B. They already knew her personally from their stays in Merano. “Katrin will receive you in the Steinach Townhouse Meran. She is one of the first people we met when we came to Merano as guests. Her smile, her friendliness and her approach were the perfect welcome, so that we immediately fell in love with the warmth of South Tyrolean hospi tality“, the owners explain. The couple wanted their guests to experience South Tyrols hospitality too, and they knew with Katrin they made the perfect decision.

A tourism professional from Merano Katrin Schnitzer has always worked in the tourism industry. She speaks perfect German, Italian, English and Spanish, and also knows how to communicate in French. She is a real Merano native who grew up in the world of tourism and has always worked in this field. Even at school she was known for her organizational skills and her sunny and honest character. After completing a language course and training in congresses, she gained her first work experience abroad (Austria and Spain), and then worked in a travel agency. For more than 20 years she and her brother Hannes have been running an agency that deals with these sectors and only in the last few years have they expanded the spectrum to the world of accommodation – where they also got to know Giulia and Roger. Her passion is traveling, sports, food and wine culture and through her knowledge of the country and its people, she can certainly give the guests of the Steinach Townhouse valuable tips.

RIPOSTO | ITALY

Zash Country Boutique Hotel Design hotel in an acient Palmento on a vulcanic island Zash is a boutique hotel where guests rediscover a time where they live in another dimension, made of slow gestures, new visions and mysterious voices: zash, splash, cucù, crag, ciuf, druum, pluf - the instinctive and hidden sounds of nature. To be surrounded by the volcano stones and scents of orange blossom, then all is quiet. It is the pleasure of life. The aim of the design concept of the architects Antonio Iraci and Carla Maugeri was that elegant historical fragments meet the contemporary. The 17 rooms which include 8 suites, bring out the physicality of nature respecting the traces of the past. The majesty of Mount Etna and the transparency of the sea are the two strong contrasts that join together in the micro territo ries of this splendid side of Sicily. This concept is carried through to the culinary experiences of the hotel. The Zash Restaurant is located where time has stopped: a special cozy intimate space. Where wine was fermenting in the old days, guests can experience the slow dimension of tastes,

space and times. The Chef Giuseppe Raciti and his team mix creativity, tradition and territory to create the one star Michelin cuisine. Inside the Nature at Zash there is the Zash’s nature: a retreat for contemporary wellbeing. Experience the outdoor pool with Etna view or the silent lemon garden. SANTO STEFANO DI SESSANIO | ITALY

Sextantio Albergo Diffuso Culturally historical project that evokes the spirit of ancient rural life Sextantio Albergo Diffuso is a fortified medieval village in the mountains of Abruzzo in the National Park Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. The hotel breathes life back into the historic castle village. With the help of the Museum “Genti d’Abruzzo” over 10 years has been tried to remain faithful to the ancient traditions and customs and to give the hotel as best as possible the original identity stamp of a medieval village. Travel through time, into another world and let yourself be enchanted. The interior design of the rooms is inspired by pictures taken by the Swiss guide Paul Scheuermeier in Abruzzo in the 1920s. In order to preserve the unity of the aesthetic-affective interior design and avoid the excessive use of contemporary elements, native objects, as well as ancient and traditional local materials are used. The search for the archaic soul of these spaces has led

258

to the preservation of the small windows, the subdued light, the uneven floors. Handmade soaps from olive oil and other products made strictly according to traditional methods are part of the thoughtful decoration of the rooms.

The restaurant “Locanda sotto gli Archi” is dominated by two large stone ceiling arches and a central fireplace. All furniture is primitive, minimal and antique dark wooden furniture. The mu seum dedicated to the people of Abruzzo was the inspiration for the handcrafted plates and mugs used for all meals and drinks. All food is based on what would have been available and eaten back then. Local ingredients like native, locally grown crops are prepared into traditional dishes according to the original recipes.

STORY

Sir Adam & Sir Albert: A different take on Amsterdam The Dutch capital is so much more than just canals and coffee shops. At the SIR HOTELS Sir Adam and Sir Albert, we’re able to live the unmistakable Amsterdam lifestyle. Amsterdam has more bikes than inhabitants – to be precise, there are around 880,000 bikes for just under 840,000 people. So it’s no wonder that even dogs, floor lamps and offspring are transported by pedal power in this European city. But Amsterdam is so much more than that. The city is a music hotspot, a crea tive c entre and a design mecca, as the Sir Adam and Sir Albert hotels so impres sively demonstrate. Sir Adam rocks out At the fashionable A’DAM Tower in the north of the city, the Sir Adam design hotel greets its guests with cool industrial chic and musical flair. The neighbours? None other than Massive Music, Sony Music, Wink and a host of young creative agencies with a passion for music.

“The fact that music is in the air here is no accident”. Every room features a different vinyl to provide the soundtrack for an evening with a chilled drink. Extras like Corsley record players and electric guitars in the rooms are sure to make it difficult for mu sic lovers to leave their temporary home. But they should, because the tower itself contains highlights such as the highest swing in Europe, cool cuisine at The But cher Social Club and a nightclub where you can dance the night away. That’s Amsterdam, too.

286

Sir Albert oozes style Where before workers used to cut preci ous stones, there is now a hotel that’s fully deserving of its prestigious title. From its past as a diamond factory, the Sir Albert continues to shine today with its high ceilings, large windows and a myriad of historic details that were maintained during the renovation. In combination with the multi-awardwinning interior design, they create an ambience that fits in perfectly with the fashionable district of De Pijp in sout hern Amsterdam. Museums, restaurants, markets, the red light district and hidden architectural highlights – in De Pijp, you’ll find everything is just around the corner. According to the host, the district is best explored on a hired (e-)bike. And when hunger strikes, culinary surprises from Asia with a South American twist await at the Izakaya restaurant. Sir Albert oozes style So if you want to get to know the city of canals from more than just a tourist’s perspective, you’ll be well looked after at either of the Sir hotels. Here you’ll mana ge to sneak an exclusive look behind the scenes of Amsterdam, if you want – thank goodness for the local hosts. But beware: once you’ve been a guest at the Sir Adam or Sir Albert, you’ll know how difficult it can be to leave the amazing rooms. But it’s worth it – we promise!

Torel Palace Lisbon A royal place full of magic The charming and romantic palaces will steal your heart. Be Queen or King for a day in the historic Torel Palace Lisbon boutique unit. With their luscious gardens and a stunning view over the city of Lisbon guests can experience the city of Lisbon in the way of royals. Torel Palace Lisbon is one of the latest wonders of Lisbon’s seven hills. Consisting of two mansions built in 1902 and 1904, it combines different histories in one. The main building was a private residence, while the other was the Bishop of Lisbon’s former guesthouse. In 2019, these two buildings were joined by a modern apartment building. The outer courtyards decorated with a flower garden make the colors of the buildings stand out. The overall renovation respected the characteristics of the archi tecture and kept the details of the old rooms, stairs, floors and gardens. Isabel Sá Nogueira, the designer of the Torel Palace in Lisbon, invited to give the interior areas of the unit a new set of clothes. The objective was to create spaces that were unforgetta ble, functional and comfortable and that create a unique and in imitable atmosphere. An atmosphere that could reflect the past while creating new memories for those who experience them. This set of historic mansions needed an appropriate theme, and 308

with the Portuguese Kings and Queens, it was quickly found. The décor of the 31 rooms and apartments is a mix of past and present, creating an atmosphere full of charm and personality. The rooms remind of the comfort of home, but with an elegant atmosphere that together with simplicity of the details under lines traditional Portuguese style, united with modern and contemporary touches. All rooms are designed individually. The unit wanted to create a warm and sophisticated atmosphere while mixing modern amenities with the history of Portugal. At the private gardens or from the pool, guests have a breathtaking view over the city. Honoring the royals of Portugal, the unit gave the name of the Portuguese Kings and Queens to all of the rooms. In the pink building, each room is named after Queens, the name of the Portuguese Kings were given to the rooms of the blue building and the rooms in the white building were named after houses of the monarchy. In fine weather, guests enjoy traditional dishes on the terrace of the hotel’s own restaurant “Terraço 23”, which offers an unforgettable open-air experience; in winter, a cosy winter garden awaits them.

Torel Avantgarde Celebrating Portuguese art, design & crafts The award-winning hotel Torel Avantgarde is Porto´s sexiest five-star hotel. It’s a place for the traveler who seeks the extra vagant and the extraordinary art of Portugal. The building’s origins date back to the 1940s when “creativity” in its broadest sense was the watchword. Art at the time was no longer seen merely as a complement but as the focus. The break with what came before and the championing of anti-traditional art forms and new frontiers of experimentalism inspired the artists of this generation and marked an era of artistic excellence. Inspired by this era, the Torel Avantgarde welcomes you with its muse um-like experience in complete harmony with the comfort and detail characteristic of the Torel Boutiques. The aim behind the approach was not just to emphasize the country’s virtues, but also to challenge guests’ senses – they are invited to live, sense and experience art. Also the design of the hotel’s interiors was inspired by the Avantgarde years. It was planned by Isabel Sá Nogueira, who was responsible for designing the common areas, and by Paula

314

Vasconcellos and Francisca Navio, from Nano Design, who styled all of the hotel’s bedrooms. All of the 49 rooms and suites of the hotel are designed indi vidually. In addition, all of the rooms got a specific name after famous Avantgarde artists, for instance from the fields of design, literature or architecture. The design of each room reflects the personality and vision of the artists the room is named. At Torel Avantgarde guests can find the Calla Wellness & Spa with treatment rooms for facial and body beauty and relaxation treatments, one gym fully equipped and one Turkish bath. Tenro by Digby is the hotel’s restaurant where meat is the main prota gonist at the menu. It features products from native P ortuguese breeds that are prepared in a special manner. What sets Tenro apart from a steakhouse is the cuts of meat and the pieces used. Tenro by Digby is a restaurant born from the passion to celebrate the traditions of Portuguese cuisine, while adding a new twist.

STORY

Torel Boutiques, Portugal: On a hill of Lisbon … ... this is where it all started for the Torel Boutiques hotels, and it’s a tale filled with history and sophisticated luxury. The first of their four establishments occupies a picturesque setting on Sant’Ana, one of the seven hills in the historic centre of the Portuguese capital. Portugal is a tourist destination that moves with the times. Over the past decades, it has evolved from a little-known location on the Atlantic to a mecca for culturally aware tourists and energetic surf fans alike. With temperatures rarely dropping below 15ºC and 290 days of sunshine a year, it’s the perfect place for a small – or large – break from the everyday. Torel Palace Lisbon: Living like kings The locals know that, and so does João Pedro Tavares. After taking a break from his 20-year career in finance, he ended up leaving it altogether. He converted an abandoned villa on one of the seven hills in the centre of Lisbon into an elegant oasis of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, and there and then transformed from a banker into a hospi tality provider. That laid the foundation for Torel Boutiques, which now has three additional locations. The first took the name Torel Palace Lisbon, and this hotel most certainly lives up to its name. The exclusive bed and breakfast has been receiving guests since 2013 in two historic palaces and a striking mansion. Within the sensitively restored walls you feel as though you’ve been ta ken back in time, and can enjoy not only the spectacular view across the capital and the Tagus river, but also modern luxury of the highest level. The location on the somewhat lesserknown hill Sant’Ana reinforces the feeling 328

of exclusivity that is exuded here. And yet the historic city centre, the Baixa district, is only a few minutes away from this most central of the seven hills. The question is just whether you’ll actually want to leave this breath-taking place at all, because even within the Torel Palace Lisbon itself, there is plenty to explore: the pale blue pool surrounded by cobbles, the stylish Cave 23 bar, the sun-drenched terrace with a superlative view across Lisbon, and simply the exquisite rooms, suites , apart ments, penthouse and villa – depending on which royal quarter you’ve chosen. Torel Palace Porto: Summer breeze by the coast If you want to get away from the capital or if you already know the area from previous visits, there is another distinctive palace hotel from Torel Boutiques in the coastal town of Porto, around 300 km north of Lisbon. It came about following a meeting between original host João Pedro Tavares and two Austrian business women, Barbara Ott and Ingrid Köck. The three now manage a total of four Torel locations: the Torel Palace Lisbon, the Torel Palace Porto, the Torel Avantgarde Porto and the Torel 1884 Porto. But back to the palace hotel in the har bour city: the Torel Palace Porto. The fivestar boutique palace is situated in the he art of the city of 200,000 inhabitants, also known as Portugal’s “capital of the north”. Again here, what was formerly a magni ficent building provided the perfect shell for the ultimate relaxed and luxurious hotel. The 24 rooms and suites are named after major Portuguese writers and poets such as Fernando Pessoa and Florbela Espanca. But their literary influences aren’t just felt in the individual rooms but also in the Blind restaurant and bar and the romantic garden and pool. Torel Avantgarde: Art in the city centre The second Porto representative of the group, the Torel Avantgarde, celebra tes the art and design of the early 20th century. The 47 rooms and suites here are not just dedicated to prominent modern artists themselves, they’ve also been desig ned based on their works. They allow guests to immerse them selves in a living world of creativity and ultimately make them part of the overall work of art. You’ll inevitably find yourself wondering here as well whether you

really want to leave at all because of all its hidden treasures. But it’s worth it, because Porto itself has plenty of its own high lights to offer. Stroll through the coastal city’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ascend one of the steepest hills on a tram, or Elétrico, and enjoy the authentic harbour atmosphere on the promenade by the river bank. Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments: From seafarers and explorers In Porto, everything reminds us of the eventful history of the city, whose name literally means “port”. In the 19th century, it was the place where Europeans could always discover and buy new and exotic spices, dishes and fabrics from overseas. And it’s this part of the country’s history that provided the inspiration for the fourth Torel Boutiques hotel: the Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments. 12 deluxe rooms and 11 apartments in two historic buildings in the city centre await curious explorers looking to un cover the mysteries of the “secret capital of Portugal” while enjoying a laid-back atmosphere and all the luxuries and con veniences of the 21st century. Each room at the Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments is based on an exotic theme such as coffee and tea, porcelain or tapestry, while the hotel’s own bistro, Bartolomeu, lures you in to revisit the highlights of the day over a glass of good wine – all while enveloped in an ambience that sends us right back to the land of the Portuguese explorers.

All four Torel Boutiques hotels are rich in history, art and culture, but still young at heart. Laid-back luxury meets historic settings to create an atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of the two cities. It’s hard to imagine being able to experience Lisbon and Porto in a more authentic and yet modern way. But come and see for yourself. Some things really do have to be seen to be believed.

The inviting natural coastal landscape, the elegance of the modern luxury spaces and the commitment to a full-range of experien es epitomizes the passion for the art of hospitality, nature and, above all, the Azores. The resort is dedicated to sustainability: The architecture and luxury amenities, the Farm-to-Table supply chain, environmen tal support and energy/water efficiency programs were con stituted to reduce the ecological impact, maintain the natural beauty and environmental balance of the coastal ecosystem. The architectural design and the choice of materials were selected to blend harmoniously with natural surroundings. The minimal

330

ist architecture was adjusted to the morphology of the land, in order to minimize its impact on the natural landscape. This was enhanced by the use of natural building materials sourced local ly or nationally, such as the islands’ cryptomeria, exotic bamboos and domestic cork that built on the simple natural setting. Construction of the Santa Bárbara resort prioritized the use of natural materials, primarily the use of local wood (cryptomeria), cork and bamboo, and infused decorative elements that callback to traditional Azorean motifs and accents. Santa Bárbara’s furni ture was designed and built exclusively for the resort. Other dec orations were made from repurposed materials, such as lamps which were made from oil containers of an abandoned farm, and the restaurant chairs and tables which were made from reused iron and covered with vegetable fiber, using matting crafts.

“The resort offers a total of 14 studios, 7 one bedroom villas and 9 two bedroom villas”.

331

The perfume of endemic plants and flowers invades the Garden Villas, which have privileged access to a shared garden with a lake.

Santa Bárbara has several spaces where you can peacefully relax and contemplate all the surrounding nature.

ARTÀ | SPAIN

Es Racó D’Artà A destination where you can reconnect with yourself through the Mallorcan way of life On the edge of the National Park of the Llevant Peninsula near the town of Artà in northeast Mallorca, the famous Mallorcan architect Toni Esteva has created a wellness hotel in a class of its own - Es Racó D’Artà. A retreat full of color and texture, unique smells and tastes, sounds of nature, elegant art and minimalist architecture.

The old Mallorcan estate from the 13th century is a great project of nature, culture and sustainability. On almost 200 hectares of land, in addition to the hotel complex, there are vineyards, or chards, wheat fields and beehives for its own honey production. A place to connect with oneself and one’s surroundings and to follow new spiritual paths.

In addition to classic Mallorcan life, Es Racó D’Artà offers a variety of workshops from culinary, agriculture, handicrafts, meditation and yoga. Alone or in a group, guests can explore the surrounding area on foot, by bike, or on horseback. After wards, the spa and wellness area with whirlpool and sauna offers the perfect place to unwind.

The 34 double rooms are spread throughout the grounds, some in the main building, some in casitas with private pools. Minimalist design and noble, natural materials characterize t he interior and reflect the harmony with nature. Ecological and regional diversity can also be found throughout the grounds - in the hotel’s own restaurant in the form of traditional Mediter ranean cuisine.
