Jennifer Suzanne

Jennifer has a wealth of experience supporting small to large interior design projects, from bespoke to turnkey solutions. Jennifer brings together colourful and rich ideas to form reality into wonderful transformations on time and to budget. Her love for period homes and contemporary design is a triumph to that aim, towards the end of 2018, Jennifer took on a brief to totally transform an old 1980s dining room within a 1850 country house, into a social room that would be the heart of the house as a gathering centre for friends and family.

my top 5 interior trends 1. COTTAGECORE Think handmade, muted, mellow and above all, pretty soft furnishing and mixing patterns such as florals with checks and stripes 2. HOUSEPLANTS Houseplants have never been more fashionable. From retro 1970s-style hanging to beautiful blooms there’s sure to be a plant to suit your style and space. In the 90s it fell out of fashion but with an importance of wellbeing in the home in 2021 they’re back– not only are they beautiful, bringing vibrancy and colour to our homes, but they also freshen the air, filtering out pollutants and releasing oxygen. I especially love installing plants in the bedroom as it can help improve the quality of your nights sleep, as you can get plenty of fresh clean oxygen to help achieve a better nights sleep.

3. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACE The current pandemic has made our homes become a place of work rest and play and this has influenced how interior designers are now looking into creating multifunctional spaces within our homes. TOP TIP removing wall cupboards makes the room feel bigger and brighter and adding your favourite crockery and accessories brings colour and personality to your space.

All of the paint experts are in agreement that are homes will be embracing green more than ever in 2021. Bancha Green, Calke Green and Vert de Tere by farrow and ball are 3 paint colours I have used in interior schemes recently and can personally say these colours are stunning and create a great connection to the outdoors. WARMING REDS AND MULBERRY TONES In times of uncertainty, we crave warmer tones that will enrich our homes and create a cocooning sanctuary to shut ourselves away. GROUNDED TONES Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2021, Brave Ground has been carefully selected to neutralise our homes in 2021. CLEANER SHADES OF BLUES The blues best suited to anchoring our homes in 2021 are cleaner tones like lively fresh St Giles Blue and the darker inkier shade Hague Blue by Farrow and Ball.

the art of styling a console The perfect addition to any hallway, dining room or even living room has got to be a feature console table. There are so many different styles of consoles – modern and contemporary, antique and statement consoles are becoming extremely popular. One of the hardest parts of buying new pieces of furniture is planning and knowing how you want to style them.

HERE ARE 5 KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS OF

styling a console table

1. Focal Point; Mirror or Art work.

2. Lighting; Feature lamps is your table big enough for 2 lamps either side. 3. Accessories; this is the really fun part, think photo frames, candles, bowls, decorative items, vases. 4. Stacking and balance; taller vases for florals, books, trays, candle holders. 5. Space fillers; rattan baskets and storage boxes. LAYERING If your console table has a main top surface and a shelf underneath, the shelf is the perfect opportunity to add some books, magazines, candles or baskets. This is layering. FEATURE LIGHTING This is one area of your home where you can really add something elegant, tall and quirky. If you are lucky to have a wide console table it may even be suitable to have a second lamp at each end, which instantly creates a designer look and feel. FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS & VASES If your using one table lamp, it’s good to out balance a feature lamp to add in height on the opposite side with a tall vase. A cost effective solution to console flowers is gathering a collection of good quality faux florals my top favourite is eucalyptus flower that you can bring out each year and looks clean and stylish and suits most modern or traditional style homes.

cleaning services

a bright and beautiful home for 2021 and ideally, something eco friendly for the health of your family. You can deal with mildew by using an old toothbrush. For a really shiny shower screen make a solution of 1-part distilled vinegar to 4 water, spray and wipe off.

Spring has now arrived and it is time to spring clean your house. Here are our tips for the 3 most hated household tasks. 1. Deep cleaning the kitchen After the Festive Feast, now’s the time for a deep clean. Take everything off the tops of cupboards and clear the surfaces, so you can get to grips with grease. Spray your kitchen cleaner on all surfaces, including the hob and leave for 5 minutes, then rinse with a microfibre cloth and warm water. Dry, and polish gloss finishes and tiles with a glass cleaner and a very dry, soft cloth. Remove the grills from hood extractors and scrub with a firm brush and soapy water. Once they are clean, you can maintain these by simply putting them through the dishwasher once a week. Always start high and move down. Use a limescale remover on the sink and polish with baby oil to make it shine. And finally, a good vacuum and mop for the floor, with a fresh mop head.

3. The Ironing mountain You need a good steam iron, so maybe time to invest in a steam generator iron in the sales. To help in future, hang clothes straight after washing and only spin on highest speed if they are going straight into the tumble dryer. To help with a pile of really creased clothes, spray lightly with water and pop in the tumble dryer to make half the creases drop away. If this all sounds too much, give Bright and Beautiful Wolverhampton a call. We offer eco-friendly, regular housekeeping services and one-off deep cleans, as well as laundry and ironing services. You can have a sparkly bathroom. But no-one said you had to do it yourself!

2. The Bathroom In a hard water area, even splashes of water cause white mark on your surfaces and chrome. Always use a cleaning product specifically for bathrooms

‘chintzy china’ makes a comeback! things British.

Over the past twelve months, prices fetched by traditional china tea and dinner sets at auction have soared – as MD and Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, Ben Gamble, explains…

While pretty much all makes and patterns have seen prices rise, the favourite seems to be Royal Albert’s ubiquitous ‘Old Country Roses’ design - its deep red and yellow entwined roses and gilt edging will be familiar to many. In just one of our online Antique & Interiors sales in February 2021, three trays of Old Country Roses tea and dinner ware sold for £700; a similar lot including tureens, tea and coffee pots saw the hammer fall at £850; three trays including teapots, bowls and vases fetched £750 and 2 trays of items including a sectional dish, vases and various floral ornaments achieved £420.

Go back 40 years and it was common for wedding gift lists to focus on functional homeware items to set the young couple up for life – pride of place going to the ‘best china’. So, it comes as little surprise that homes up and down the country have china services proudly displayed in cabinets or packed away in boxes, never to see the light of day. Until very recently, when such ‘services’ were bought into the saleroom, we used to have to let people down gently with valuations.

With the trend looking set to continue, now’s the time to dust off the tea service that’s been sitting in your cupboard waiting for the day you’ll serve high tea – it could be your ticket to afternoon tea at The Ritz instead!

However, in the last few years there has been a definite shift, with prices for china tea and dinnerware on the up – and often the more traditional or ‘chintzy’ the pattern, the better! So, what has driven this trend? A couple of things, really – initially the surge in interest in all things ‘vintage’ and the resurrection of the great British afternoon tea. In the past 12 months, however, there has been a huge surge in the value driven by bidders from South Korea, and their passion for all

sunrise of tettenhall: we’re here to support you Whatever your situation, whatever your care needs and requirements, we have it covered.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been tough on all of us. We know just how challenging it can be to look after our loved ones in these testing times, especially those who are older and more vulnerable. We understand that you want to provide the best care, whilst also maintaining their mental health and ensuring they are happy and well.

There’s never a dull moment at our home. Our high-spirited and creative dedicated activities team are always ensuring that they enhance the mental wellbeing of residents – we want them to live life to the fullest and remain happy. They do this by leading a varied and fun activities programme. The team have organised walks around the beautiful gardens, arranged socially distant afternoon teas, pamper days and plenty of games and entertainment. Everyone in our home also continues to go above and beyond to make sure residents remain in contact with loved ones, as often as possible, via video calls and phone calls.

However, it’s important to look after yourself too and take some time out, without feeling guilty. You don’t have to do it all alone - we at Sunrise are here to help. We offer a range of services from residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as respite care options. So if you are looking for a bit of support, time out to recoup or simply some advice, give us a call.

As we look forward to the months ahead and hopefully closer to the end of this pandemic, you can rest assured that you or your loved one will be well looked after.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our team and everyone we support is of the utmost importance to us, and we’re pleased that most of our residents and team members have been given the first dose of their vaccination. We are also continuing to facilitate regular visiting, safely, whilst keeping in place our rigorous infection prevention measures.

the joy of handwriting “It can also enhance spelling ability as hand movements involve some muscle memory. This style can also improve reading ability, as the goal in reading is to read whole words rather than distinct letters and cursive writing promotes reading whole words.”

A Shropshire headteacher posted a handwritten letter to all his pupils as part of a campaign to improve handwriting skills. Martin Stott, Headteacher at the Old Hall School in Wellington, also hoped to encourage children to spread a little kindness with the gesture during Britain’s third national lockdown.

Mr Stott said all children at the school would be involved in the scheme.

The letters arrived on doormats at homes across the region while schools were closed to all but the children of critical workers.

“Many of our children already write beautifully but this will stand them in good stead for producing neat, legible, accurate and speedy handwriting in the future.”

In January Mr Stott launched a new campaign at the school to improve handwriting after staff noticed it was the one area which had suffered during the first national lockdown last year.

In his two page letter sent to each child, Mr Stott talked about the lockdown and asked them how they were doing. He also suggested they make a phone call to somebody or write a letter to cheer them up.

“Last term, we assessed the children at school and we were very pleased by the overall results, which demonstrated that good progress had been made notwithstanding all the challenges of distance learning,” said Mr Stott.

He acknowledged those who had been learning at home since January might be feeling a bit tired and “fed up” as they headed towards half-term. “So I would like to make a suggestion,” he added. While reminding them to ask permission he said they could phone a friend or family member but first write a list about what they wanted to talk about.

“However, it became evident that the long summer break and lockdown prior to it had affected one area in particular: the children’s writing. The stamina required for longer writing tasks and the quality of the children’s letter formation was obviously affected by the long break so we decided that we needed to act on that.”

He also encouraged them to pick up their pens and pencils and write to someone, saying it was not something we did all that often but that it was nice to receive a letter in the post.

The English Department at the school looked at the options available and agreed to implement a new whole-school approach to handwriting, which was launched this term.

“I’m sure your phone calls and your handwritten letters will be really appreciated, so do go ahead and make somebody’s day,” he said.

The country went into lockdown again but the school adapted and the campaign to introduce a cursive style of handwriting was still launched.

The school used a comprehensive online learning programme of live lessons and other digital and practical resources during the lockdown.

“Cursive handwriting is a form of writing in which the letters are joined-up, in an attempt to write faster,” added Mr Stott.

Mr Stott said families at home had been extremely supportive and the children adapted brilliantly and progressed really well.

“This is opposed to block-letters, in which the pen lifts between every letter. It can also be called script handwriting. The ability to write neatly but quickly is still a skill which is required in the workplace and at home for notes, list-making, annotation/editing but it will also help the children during exams and, of course, classwork.

But he added it was vital the school remained vigilant and committed in its approach to ensuring that the children were not only continuing to progress but that their joy of learning was fully nurtured.

The opportunity to share time with friends, benefit from dedicated and supported Prep and to build valuable life skills, is recognised by many of the Tettenhall College families. Excitingly, there will also be a number of Boarding Scholarship opportunities available this coming September, where an element of boarding will be offered as part of the award.

The important business of day-to-day schooling has moved to a digital format here at Tettenhall College, with thousands of teacher led lessons, across the full timetable, every single day of the working week, successfully delivered. Our cocurricular and extra-curricular programmes are also going from strength to strength and the innovation and ingenuity being shown by teachers and pupils alike has been astounding. Innovation and development however, have not stopped at the virtual classroom door. As part of an exciting, ambitious and forward-thinking Development Plan, Tettenhall College has just commenced work on its largest boarding accommodation, School House. This fabulous, high grade renovation project will see a brand new common room with outstanding facilities, a beautiful new kitchen that will provide a wealth of opportunities, and a complete upgrade of all the boarding bedrooms. All in all, this will ensure that Tettenhall College is providing some of the very best boarding facilities in the region, if not the country. Each year, boarding students come to Tettenhall College from across the region and also internationally. There is a wonderful, cosmopolitan community of students, both boys and girls, whose presence enriches the life of everyone at the school. nick & royston After many months of lockdown, we all cannot wait for our visit back to the salon to be inspired for a new Spring look. So we decided to catch up with `Midlands hairdresser of the Year` Nick Malenko for his thoughts of the hottest new looks for Spring 2021.

Fantasy Tones

It’s time to embrace lighter and brighter blonde tones. Cool icy blonde highlights or balayage techniques with pure white or cream hues are set to be Spring’s most in-demand hair trend. There will be a real evolution this Spring in terms of the creativity during toning - expect energy boosting & fun-loving pastel shades such as breath-taking pinks and lilacs. Pro Tip: seamless blondes can be high maintenance. Speak with your colourist to find the shampoo, conditioner and home treatment to ensure your tone remains beautiful inbetween salon visits.

Shine On

If the past year has taught us anything, it’s taught us to find the time to invest in our health and wellbeing so, be warned, when it comes to superhealthy and uber glossy hair, there is a whole new level of expectation. Hair that is oozing shine and full of vitality is a Spring essential and if weekly homecare treatments have fallen off your radar then it’s definitely time to check in for some powerful insalon treatments that will add a much-needed and instant boost of nutrients & radiance to get you back on track. Pro Tip: the Royston Blythe Olaplex Treatment is an absolute must-have if you’re booking in for a colour or as a deep repair treatment.

Chocolate & Caramel Crush

Sunkissed highlights are a fabulous way to refresh and subtly lighten dark hair for Spring - they’ll brighten your skin tone, add some dimension and give a sun-kissed effect to your locks. We only need to look to Kendall Jenner to see that adding a variety of creamy and caramel tones to dark hair will give luxurious, super-natural, feminine and complexion boosting results to help us transition into a whole new season. Pro Tip: the key to beautiful sunkissed hair is a glossy and super-healthy finish. Invest in a bottle of our favourite Kerastase Elixir Ultime to achieve the ultimate shine.

Resurgence of The Bob

It became synonymous with the 1920’s but a whole century on and The Bob is still one the most versatile, iconic and flattering hairstyles for any woman of any age and any faceshape. As we finally say goodbye to Lockdown life once and for all, we should also say farewell to the endless months of growing out our hair! There has never been a better time to make a whole new stylish statement that makes us feel and look our best! At Royston Blythe we love to tailor blunt bobs to compliment our clients faceshape - guaranteed that hair will appear more voluminous and oozing vitality! What more would you want! Pro Tip: if you have fine, limp hair, a blunt bob has to be your go-to style as it really shows off lines and sleekness.

Gilly Bachelor, Travel Expert

If you have struggled this year with holiday stresses, due to cancellations, re-bookings and refunds, imagine what it would have been like to have someone else taking care of that for you. Here’s what Caroline said… ‘Gilly has been absolutely brilliant booking our honeymoon! Decision making hasn’t been easy during this pandemic, but Gilly has been so patient and understanding and at no point did we feel pressured to book. We are so grateful to her, for her expert advice and help. You really do get a truly bespoke service with Gilly, which is why I highly recommend her services. She’s fantastic and I know we are in a safe and dedicated pair of hands.’

I work with people who want a better experience when booking their holidays, and want someone to take care of all the little details, like Roy, who recently left this review… ‘I have been leaning on Gilly’s travel services for the last couple of years. The recommendations given for our 25th wedding anniversary were hard to choose between and all exceptional. it’s time to get excited and start planning your wedding flowers! It’s been a tough year for couples and the wedding industry this past year. We have managed couples that have had to postpone their wedding date and even felt the stress of couples who have to postpone upto 3 times! Let’s hope that we can all take a big step forward and be excited about restarting your wedding plans and catching up with suppliers, go wedding shopping and more importantly catchup with the special people in your life that will share your special day.

Create moodboads When it comes to planning your wedding, it’s a great idea to collate all your ideas in one safe place. Pinterest is great for this. You can create different boards for each section of your wedding. You can save directly into each board and you also have the option to make your boards private so no-one can see your ideas. Otherwise screenshots saved to your wedding album on your phone or tablet is good. When you have your appointments with your wedding supplier, share as many images as possible with them, as it makes them more aware of your likes and also your dislikes. Personally, I just love a scrapbook…. A book of sticky notes, sample fabrics, stationery proofs and cut outs of magazines totally inspires me. If you decide that you are enlisting the help of a wedding planner, they will take you through the steps and will even design your mood boards and bring your ideas to life.

THE BEAUTY OF ROSES When planning your wedding flowers it is so easy to initially think of roses. A reliable bloom within the world of flowers that has been modified by growers over the years to produce such a large range of colours. Becoming popular this season is the two tone roses which offer two colours blended in a natural variation. In addition to the colour variations available you also have to consider the rose head size. A large oversized rose may look fab in your bridal bouquet, but too large and bulky when pinned on the grooms or best mans suit. As a florist, my personal favourite rose is Norma Jean. It has a long flower head in a clean ivory colour. The fragrance is simply divine. It is very memorable once you have smelt it. The natural fragrance of roses in many cases has been reduced in favour of faster growing times and longevity.

Ultra feminine, from blush to lavender and every shade in between, pink is our Spring go to colour. Shorts are forecast again, I love these from Mango with a matching shirt, they have a fabulous faux leather range on line in gorgeous shades, loafers are back & these are a smart alternative to trainers from Next. Over shirts have been around for a few months, this soft wool shirt from Other Stories is a great season update. On Instagram, I recently became aware of neverfullydressed.co.uk, there are some cool statement pieces, which I will be investing in soon.

Lavender and lemon have been forecast as calming colours this season, as one of the trends is to mix pastel shades to create a soft rainbow. The new twin sets are gorgeous from River Island, I hesitated before Xmas & they sold out of the soft grey, tie neck blouses are still key, this one has smocking detail on the sleeves, dainty day dresses are a trend, this one from Boden completely fits the bill, add the blue woven bag from Zara & soft wool coat from Mango, totally cracked it!

This shirred blouse from Other Stories will be huge this season, throw over the soft wool cape from Zara & rock the fabulous shades from Chanel plus the must-have belt bag by Chloe.

VISUAL STRESS, DYSLEXIA AND MIGRAINE – HOW FLINT AND PARTNERS OPTOMETRISTS CAN HELP! Visual Stress is a term used to describe visual discomfort and perceptual distortions in printed text, and is suffered by some people who struggle to read. Whilst it is a separate condition to Dyslexia, the two can run concurrently and a greater proportion of Dyslexic people suffer with Visual Stress. The condition is thought to be present in approximately 20% of the general population and, anecdotally, we are seeing more people complaining of visual issues lately, possibly due to increased time spent in front of the computer when working from home.

Symptoms may include: • • • •

Movement of printed text Blurring of print Letters changing in size or shape Patterns in the print (sometimes

• • •

described as rivers or worms) Halos of colour surrounding letters or words Tiring easily whilst reading Headaches or visual discomfort

Some individuals who find reading tiring and unpleasant may unknowingly experience Visual Stress. Symptoms can be experienced in varying degrees from simple fatigue when reading, to an inability to look at text. How might colour help? In some cases, the symptoms of Visual Stress can be reduced by the use of coloured filters: a coloured overlay placed over text or coloured lenses worn in spectacles. Research has shown that offering a large number of colours allows for optimal results. The Intuitive Colorimeter™ offers many thousands of colour combinations, and offers true precision to the patient. As a first step, it is important that anyone who struggles to read should be referred to a vision specialist. A primary eye examination which checks for the existence of refractive errors, such as long or short sight or astigmatisms, is free of charge to school aged children under NHS provision. It is important to rule out or treat other vision deficits before testing for Visual Stress. Once an eye examination has been carried out, the practitioner may then test for the existence of Visual Stress. At this point the practitioner may use an overlay as part of the testing procedure. Whilst coloured overlays are useful when reading from a book, precision tints are more convenient when copying from the board or from another book or for those individuals who are particularly light sensitive and may develop headaches and eye strain when attempting to read. If Visual Stress is found to exist, the practitioner may suggest prescribing precision tinted lenses as a longer term aid. At Flint and Partners, we are accustomed to solving problems combining our unsurpassed clinical skills and technology, and are proud to have the most up to date equipment in the area. Our Optometrist Director Ed Lyons and Associate Optometrist Keren Garcha have undertaken specialist training in this complex field, and have created custom lenses to assist hundreds of patients suffering from Visual Stress, Dyslexia, Migraine and Autism. We can even create custom tinted contact lenses for those that require an alternative to glasses and have supplied these to Premiership footballers and Hollywood stunt performers. If all goes to plan in summer, you may also see one of our clients wearing our lenses in the Tokyo Olympics! To see how we can help you or your child, please get in touch on 01902 422096.

helping hands for back pain - gardening As a nation we love our gardens and spend a considerable amount of time and money on them. As gardeners rush to get those jobs done, there is a risk that they may injure themselves. What everyone wants is to be fit and healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in the garden and enjoy the fruits of their labour come summertime.

garden work, start with lighter jobs as this will lessen the chance of muscle strain. Clever pruning - Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning and avoid overstretching to reach the areas you are dealing with. Invest in some long handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach. Take a break- Vary your activity by spending no more than 20 minutes on any one thing and make sure that you take regular breaks. Plan ahead - Buy heavy items such as gravel or compost in smaller bags rather than large ones. If buying bulk amounts of compost, shovel the contents from the back f the car straight into smaller bags or a wheelbarrow.

Chiropractors treat common muscle and joint problems including low back pain and shoulder pain. We asked the team at the Tettenhall Road Chiropractic Clinic in Wolverhampton for some helpful tips on how to avoid pain in the first place when you are gardening. springs on its way… Rose pruning should be finished now, once the new growth has several sets of complete leaves open start spraying them fortnightly against black spot, mildew and aphids, best control is achieved by using two different products alternatively, so pests don’t build up a resistance to one particular chemical.

January was a very wet month with sharp frosts, but, beware of sharps frosts in February and March that will spoil vulnerable plants and soft shoots – have some fleece handy and check the weather forecasts, if we’re likely to get a frost put the fleece over the tops of plants to protect them. There’s still time to use winter wash on your fruit trees if they’re not showing any signs of bud burst, do so on a mild day, this will clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees. Also make sure you have a grease band wrapped round the stem or coat the main stem with fruit tree grease, this can be kept on all year round to catch any pests climbing up the tree.

With so much damp weather over the last few months there’s going to be plenty of moss in lawns. We have in stock MO Bacter which is a slow release organic fertiliser for lawns. Approved by the RHS, this feeds the lawn over a 12 week period and contains bacteria which are naturally found in the soil and which when added to fertiliser will consume material like thatch and moss, making it unnecessary to rake or scarify after treatment.

Dead head spring flowering bulbs as they finish, particularly daffodils, leaving the green foliage on and top dress with fertilizer, they’ll send the food back to the bulb and you’ll get a better display of flowers next year. Snowdrops can be split at this time of year into smaller clumps.

Annual herbs can be sown now – fennel, parsley, savoury, dill all need replenishing every year. Perennial herb varieties can also be planted, remember to water and feed regularly so you can keep cropping throughout the year.

Many of the summer flowering bulbs and tubers can be planted outside as the weather warms up – Lilies and Gladioli. Always plant lily bulbs on their side so that water doesn’t lie in the scales and cause them to rot. Lilies, especially Tree Lilies benefit from being started off in pots and planted outside once growing strongly. They don’t reach their full potential in height for a couple of years but are well worth the wait. Dahlias can be started off in pots inside, then planted out once the danger of frosts has receded. Begonias should be pressed gently into potting compost, curved side down – never completely covered, water and keep on a light sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse.

Watch out for late frosts if you’ve got potatoes in tubs with plenty of leaf growth – always protect at night. Plant your first and second early potatoes followed by maincrops, again watching out for late frosts once the foliage appears. breathing in the beautiful spring air small amount can be toxic. In fact, this sweetener is also found in some nut butters, cakes, jams and ice cream too.

Well, it’s been a long winter but finally the lighter nights and sunnier spring day are arriving which means more fun times for your beloved pets. Playtime in the garden, longer less muddy walks, and even simply basking in the sun while breathing in the beautiful spring air, it’s happy times once again.

Other hazards lurk around the house and garden at this time of the year, many of you may have daffodils and lilies in the house over Easter, please take care because they are very dangerous to pets. Daffodils are toxic to dogs and cats; the flowers and leaves can be harmful if ingested. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, it only takes a small amount to be ingested for them to be poisoned. All parts of the plant are toxic, pollen may fall from the flower on to the cat’s coat and be ingested later when they groom themselves, they may eat a petal or even have a drink of water from the vase, this can lead to kidney failure. Kittens are particularly at risk as they explore their environment and can so easily ingest part of the lily. Certain varieties of lily are also dangerous to dogs and rabbits. Rabbits are curious little souls and will try anything, so you have to be especially careful what you have in their environment.

With Easter upon us, why not make your pets happy times even happier and make them some of their very own Easter treats! You could get the kids to help you come up with fun names for them and make them in the shape of Easter eggs and bunnies, there are plenty of recipes for pet treats on the internet. You could even play a pet friendly version of an Easter egg hunt with your furry one, I’m sure they will sniff out those home-made delights in no time at all. There are a few things that you need to be aware of to keep your furry friends safe though, hot cross buns can be dangerous to pets because grapes, sultanas, raisins and currants are highly toxic to dogs and cats, a very small quantity can lead to kidney failure. Chocolate is also dangerous for dogs, cats, rabbits and many other animals too, it contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to them and can actually be fatal. The darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is, so keep those Easter eggs out of reach and ensure that your children don’t share their chocolate goodies with their pet siblings.

Breath in the beautiful spring air and enjoy the lighter nights and warmer days!!! Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them. divorce law changes Later this year we will see significant amendments to the Divorce Laws in England and Wales. Currently there is one ground for divorce- the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. If one party wishes to start divorce proceedings immediately following separation, they must rely on their spouse’s adultery or unreasonable behaviour.

divorce petitions being dismissed if the Court has felt that the petition is sparce- this was highlighted by the rejection on appeal in the case of Owens v Owens where despite several incidents of the husband’s unreasonable behaviour, the Petitioner remained married’. At Thornes we welcome this change and understand that divorce can be one of the most difficult and stressful experiences. We do all we can to make sure we provide supportive legal services that meet the needs of the individual throughout the process.

This position has long since been challenged by Family Law professionals who have argued that it adds to the strain on families experiencing marriage breakdown and can often hinder amicable resolutions. It is expected that we will see the introduction of ‘no-fault’ divorce during the Autumn of 2021 when the requirements to establish either fault or a separation to proceed with divorce are likely to be abolished. ‘This welcome change will enable couples to divorce without the necessity of the Court having to examine the reasons for the breakdown of the marriage’ says Lisa Ridge, Legal Executive at Thornes Solicitors. ‘There have been examples of

to consolidate or not to consolidate 3. Confidence - Combing your pensions together will give you more confidence that your money is being looked after properly.

That is the question. Should I be combining my pensions together During our working lives, many of us end up accumulating various pensions, usually because we have had a variety of different jobs during our working lives. At some point as people approach retirement, they start to consider consolidating all their various pots into one larger pot. The decision whether to consolidate your pensions or not, usually applies to what are called Defined Contribution pensions such as Personal Pensions and Group Personal Pensions.

4. Easier to understand – One larger pot will help you understand what you have in more detail and could be less confusing. 5. Better retirement options – Modern pensions usually offer all the different alternative retirement income options including Drawdown. The disadvantages of combining your pension pots together.

Defined Benefit pensions, sometimes referred to as Final Salary pensions are not what am writing about here and is a different subject altogether.

1. Lost Guarantees – Some older pensions include valuable guarantees that would be lost.

A lot of pensions usually means that you will be getting a lot of paperwork. Trying to understand the different statements coming at different times of the year, can be quite a challenge. But looking after the paperwork isn’t the only problem. When your retirement savings are with different companies, it’s hard to get an overall picture of your retirement plans and know whether you are on track for a good retirement.

2. Penalties – Some older pensions will penalise you for moving to a new pension company. 3. Fees – Initial fees are usually charged for combining pension pots together. A concern that some people have about consolidating their pensions together is that all of their money is held with one pension company. If a pension company did go bust, your “pension money” will be being held entirely separately from the company’s money. Furthermore, quite often, the funds in which you would be invested are quite likely to be with different investment companies than the pension company.

By combining your pensions, you can get a better understanding and greater clarity by holding them in one place. You will know exactly how your pension is performing, and how much you are paying in charges. To help you decide whether consolidating your pension is right for you, it is important to understand what the benefits may be and the potential downside.

It is important to remember that the value of your investment is not guaranteed, and you may not get back what you invest. Past performance is not a guide to future returns. The value of the investments can fluctuate daily and will rise and fall.

The advantages of combining your pension pots together. 1. Control – Combing your pension pots will give you greater control over your money.

estate planning Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.

Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death. What is an ‘estate’

Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.

Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions. Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.

Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children. Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.

What is a Will? A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.

Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.

Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do. Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:

When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.

- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.

Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.

- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.

Inheritance tax

- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.

It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.

- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.

The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.

Benefits of a Will These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will:

How much does a Will cost?

You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.

This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

vauxhall corsa elite that I have experienced. The Blue Tooth is another standard feature as is Apple or Android features and 6 speakers did justice to the sound system.

If you look at the picture of the all-new Corsa, you will appreciate that like many cars it has grown from what it used to be, the diminutive small Corsa hatchback, it now almost appears to be the same size as the Vauxhall Astra, writes Bob Hickman.

The interior has received a makeover, the standard level of equipment is quite good. I like the driver and front passenger seats were able to be adjusted in height as well as the rake. The electronic climate control worked admirably and there was sufficient head, shoulder and knee room for front passenger although the room in the back isn’t too great for tall adults and can be a little on the tight size.

The Vauxhall Corsa has always been a top selling vehicle in the Vauxhall range since its launch back in 1993 and I see no reason why the latest incarnation should not continue this particular trend. The design has a new bold grille, the roof colouring is an attractive option, huge new super bright headlights across the range and the interior has been comprehensively improved but it’s the external look that I think gives credit to the GM designers.

The boot on the Corsa was admirable for the size of the vehicle and much bigger than some of its comparable competitors. I found the Corsa a good vehicle to drive, it responded to the steering and it turned in and held the road wonderfully. The 8-speed automatic gearbox seemed to know exactly what the correct ratio for the given circumstances were and it never felt laboured or strained in its operation.

I think one area the Corsa will succeed in is with the electric version that is available, especially in view of recent Government announcements on electric vehicles. You still have a choice between a petrol or a diesel, the test vehicle had a 1.2-litre 3 cylinder engine which produced 100ps sufficient to give a top speed of a very handsome 119mph and 0-60 gallop in marginally over 10.2 seconds. Vauxhall claims a combined fuel figure should be between 45.6 and 48.7 mpg and during a week of varying testing, I achieved 44.1mpg, so it is very close to the figures at long last. CO emissions are not that low however at 134g/km.

This is the 10th generation of the Vauxhall Corsa and it is difficult to express anything other than admiration in what Vauxhall have done, it was always a good car, but now with its excellent infotainment systems, the boot being a little bit larger, and space for adults or 3 children in the back of this enlarged new version it may suddenly get promoted onto your list instead of thinking it was too small for the family.

The level equipment on the test vehicle was quite extensive, the infotainment has a wonderful 10” colour touchscreen that was very easy to use. The satellite navigation was clear, easy to understand and pointed you and took you in the correct directions. The digital radio had the benefit of a DAB and it seemed to lock onto a signal and not lose it like some

The Corsa has a 3-year or a 60,000 miles warranty and 12,500 miles or 1 year for servicing. The on the road price would normally be £22,785 but the test car was fitted with the Quartz Grey, 2 coat metallic paint, this added an extra £550 to the bill.

Ssang Yong tivoli features. The top specification Ultimate, as in my test car, has the option of automatic transmission, 18” diamond cut alloy wheels, leather seats at the front, the infotainment display has grown to 10.5 inches and I particularly like the folding door mirrors, to tell you that the car is closed and locked.

If the budget is a little bit restricted but you are in the search for a new car and you can’t afford the mainstream players, then SsangYong has to be worth a look, writes Bob Hickman. Built in Korea the Tivoli, has had a makeover since its launch in 2015, new petrol engines and a new interior design as well as exterior changes suggest the Tivoli is now a new contender in the small SUV segment and worthy of a second look.

The Tivoli has a choice of a brand new petrol 1.2litre GDi-T and a 1.5-litre GDi-T injection engines, there is also a 1.6-litre diesel. There is also a decision to be made between 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox.

Huge changes have been made in the interior, a lot of the equipment comes from the SsangYong’s bigger siblings. The Tivoli is quite a good looking car, the front of the vehicle with its outstanding grille and headlights is quite slick and swish, the back is rather angular a typical SsangYong feature.

The test car had the 1197cc 3 cylinder petrol engine producing 128 bhp, sufficient to amble along from 0-60 in 10.6 seconds and reach 106 mph where allowed, during my ownership I found the engine to be more than adequate for the size of the vehicle, I managed to achieve 42 mpg on very varied driving routes. The Tivoli had the 6-speed manual gearbox and this really was a big disappointment, the first 4 gears were perfectly adequate in and around town, if you ventured out on to dual carriageways or motorways 5th and 6th were useable, but in and around town the 5th and 6th ratios were a definite no-no, the ratios were obviously chosen for long distance cruising and to increase the mpg.

The interior of the vehicle is a huge improvement on the previous derivative, the amount of space within the re-designed and re-worked cabin is very good. You can easily accommodate a family of 4 and storage has not been overlooked either. The boot at 423 litres is bigger than some of its immediate competitors. My Ultimate specification, was the top of the range, but even the entry level model is well equipped, it has cruise control, electric windows, remote central locking, DAB radio with iPod and Blue Tooth connectivity, air conditioning, six air bags, collision and various other safety electronic aids including lane keeping assistance and a traffic sign recognition, all features that you would normally find on a far more expensive option.

The new face lifted Tivoli starts at a mere £14,495 on the road and topping out at £21,495 for the diesel automatic, there really is no reason why SsangYong with the Tivoli should not claim some sales especially from those who are not overly badge conscious but just want value for money.

If you move up to a Ventura this introduces alloy wheels, faux leather seats, a 7” touchscreen with rear camera, Apple Car Play and various other

A 7 year or 150,000 mile warranty suggests the SsangYong are confident in their product.
