My first feeling of inspirational advice for the New Year is to remember to create a space that reflects who you are, and that you enjoy spending time in. In 2025, the concept of interiors are designed for the individual creating personalised spaces that reflect the unique personality, lifestyle and needs of the homeowner.

This year, trends will move away from cookie cutter design and mass-market aesthetics, focusing instead on crafting environments that resonate on a personal level.

SENTIMENTAL AND ECLECTIC DÉCOR

I enjoy spending time with my clients and discussing their mix of heirlooms, travel souvenirs and personal artwork. I try to incorporate that unique sense of style in a new design that considers those items, and it is often more challenging to work with existing pieces. But when it works, this approach results in a space that feels authentic and layered with meaning rather than just purely styled for aesthetics.

BESPOKE FURNITURE AND ARTISANAL PIECES

Custom made furniture, handcrafted by local artisans or commission specifically for the space, brings a sense of exclusivity. A bespoke piece will add character to the home and I have been working with a fantastic network of trades that are experts in their field of joinery; from custom built bars, home offices and bedroom furniture.

KITCHEN ‘THE HEART OF THE HOME’

PAINT COLOURS

Instead of following generic colour trends, I will tailor palettes to evoke emotions and memories specific to the individual. Whether it’s a calming green shades for a nature lover, or vibrant shades of orange inspired by travel, the goal is to reflect your thoughts and experiences into the spaces.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES

For many of us in 2025 that work from home or have multiple uses for a space, a living room might have to adapt into an office space or a bedroom into a welcoming space for staying guests. I often ask my clients ‘how are you going to use this space?’, ‘who is going to use this space?’. This is to get the best use of every part of the home.

In 2025 kitchens will feel like an additional living space within the house rather than a utilitarian place to prepare food. Designers are spending time considering the space and introducing custom cabinetry, personalised hardware and bespoke design elements, allowing for a space that reflects individual tastes while remaining functional.

home my guide to creating a personalised interior space in 2025

1. UNDERSTAND THE INDIVIDUAL’S ‘NEEDS AND LIFESTYLE’

Conduct in-depth consultations and learn how the space will be used. Are they working from home, entertaining guests often, or seeking a tranquil retreat? Each of these scenarios requires a different design approach.

2. PERSONALISED LAYOUT AND ZONING

Design spaces based on the user’s routine and flow. For example, an open-plan layout might work for someone who loves entertaining, while separate rooms might be better for those who value privacy and quiet.

3. BESPOKE FURNITURE AND CUSTOM ELEMENTS

Invest in custom furniture tailored to the individual’s preferences for size, material and function. This could include a custom-built desk for remote work or a built-in bookshelf for an avid reader.

4. USE OF COLOUR AND MATERIALS

Choose colour palettes that resonate with the client. Bold, vibrant colours can energize a space, while soft, muted tones create a calming environment.

5. SENTIMENTAL AND UNIQUE DÉCOR.DISPLAY

Incorporate personal artefacts, family heirlooms, or travel souvenirs that evoke memories and add emotional depth to the space. Commission custom artwork or include DIY projects that allow the individual to contribute creatively to their environment.

07580 027277

6. FUNCTIONALITY AND AESTHETICS BALANCE

While aesthetics are important, ensure the design also prioritises practicality. Storage solutions, durable finishes and easy-to-maintain surfaces, can make a space both beautiful and functional.

7. SMART TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

Incorporate smart home technology that aligns with the individual’s techsavvy. This can include automated lighting, climate control, or voiceactivated assistants for convenience and customisation.

8. PRIORITISE COMFORT AND WELL-BEING

Focus on ergonomics to ensure that furniture supports healthy posture and movement. Optimise natural light and ventilation to promote well-being. Add elements like indoor plants or water features to enhance the connection to nature.

winter wonders and warnings for pets

Winter is upon us and wow is it cold! We really need to wrap up warm and make sure we take care of ourselves properly and ensure that we are getting the right vitamins. Our pets need extra care too, dogs get cold just like we do! If your dogs’ ears are cold especially around the edges this means that they are a bit chilly too, so get them warmed up.

Why not make a bone broth for your cat or dog, you might enjoy some yourself too. After you’ve eaten your roast chicken, simply boil the chicken carcass up and simmer for a couple of hours, strain and then safely dispose of the bones so that animals can’t get to them. (Cooked chicken bones can be a dangerous choking hazard and can splinter). You are then left with the broth which is full of wonderful nutrients that may help give you and your fury ones a winter immune system boost. Offer your dog or cat a small amount on a separate saucer, you can serve it slightly warm, just tepid, so that it gives your dog and cat a nice warm glowing feeling and of course a nutritional boost.

When out and about be mindful that Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs and cats, they can be tempted to lick it as it tastes so sweet but sadly it would only take a little taste to kill so please take care not to spill any yourself and keep an eye on your precious ones. Wash your dogs’ feet off after a walk, especially if the gritters have been out because rock salt is actually harmful to dogs,

it can cause burns/frostbite in their pads and may also make them poorly if they lick it off themselves.

Rabbits and some other pets that live outside, will need to be brought in from the cold and put in a garage or conservatory, make sure that they have extra hay for bedding and cover part of their hutch and runs to help provide more insulation. Pets can burn more calories in the cold weather so you may need to increase what you feed them. Check their water regularly, especially water bottles as these may freeze particularly at the end, you may need to press the end in every could of hours to make sure it’s still working.

Don’t forget to spare a thought for the wildlife and pop some fresh water and food out for them if you are able to. Remember, as well as wild bird seed and nuts from the pet shop, you could pop out some kitchen scraps such as cooked peas, cooked unsalted bacon and beef fat, apples and pears and cooked eggs. Ensure you chop the scraps up in to small pieces or crush them.

keep each other safe and snuggly, remember the warnings and enjoy the winter wonders!!!

Do not feed bone broth if your dog or cat has related allergies or have any other medical issues that need to be taken in to consideration. Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

MINUTES MINUTES

This dish is great for anytime of day but commonly known as a breakfast dish. It is usually made with rice but for a lower carb version I use cauliflower instead and replace the wine with water.

Check the haddock for any bones and remove if you find any. Place the haddock on a baking sheet with some parchment paper underneath. Cook in the oven for about 12 minutes and then allow to cool a little before taking the flesh off the skin.

In a frying or sautee pan add the ghee or oil and heat on medium adding the onion wedges first, once the onion is starting to soften add in the diced courgette and the blitzed cauliflower and allow to cook for about 10 miniutes.

Add in the raisins, stock jelly and white wine or water and simmer until half of the liquid has evaporated and then add in the curry powder and turmeric.

While this is happening boil the eggs for 6 minutes then allow to cool little before shelling.

Taste the cauliflower to check if it is soft and then add in the haddock with a few squeezes of lemon juice. Allow this to simmer for about 5 minutes to heat the fish then to finish ready for serving stir in a good handful of fresh spinach leaves and once plated add 2 eggs cut in half on each dish. Finish with some fresh coriander if you have it or some finely sliced tips of spring onions.

Serve with Mineral water with fresh lemon and ginger slices.

(keto) brownie with cherry mascarpone

INGREDIENTS:

100g of almond flour

30g od cacao powder

1 tsp of baking powder

1/2 tsp of salt

100g of coconut oil (melted)

1 espresso shot (50ml)

2 eggs

130g of erythritol (granulated sweetener)

1 tsp of pure vanilla extract

400g of mascarpone

300g of fresh cherries

EQUIPMENT

8inch bakiing pan

Measuring spoons and cups

Scales

Mixing bowls

Small pan to melt coconut oil

Cherry pitter of board and knife

Hand mixer or stand mixer

Parchment paper

METHOD:

This version of my brownie uses almond flour and erythritol as a sweetener.

Preheat your oven to 175oC. Grease and line an 8inch square baking pan with some coconut oil and parchment paper. Mix all of the ingredients together except the mascarpone and the cherries.

Spread the mixture evenly in the baking pan and bake for 20 minutes in the centre of the oven then allow to cool completley in the fridge for about 2 hours.

Stone the cherries and chop roughly then add to the mascarpone. Add 2 tsp of erythritol if you like and a dash of brandy if you have it.

Once the brownie is chilled cut into portions and serve with a spoon of cherry mascarpone.

The School behind the house: Where outdoor learning thrives

At first glance, Newbridge Preparatory School may appear to be a small school tucked away in a quiet street but behind this charming façade lies a vibrant, expansive world of exploration and learning. Wander beyond the main building and you will find yourself in the beautiful grounds of the school. Visitors are often surprised and delighted at our natural setting that encourages outdoor learning to blossom and a hands-on approach to education to take root.

Our grounds provide more than just a scenic backdrop; they are integral to the Newbridge educational experience. We believe that learning should not be confined to four walls. From the youngest pupils to our oldest, we encourage children to explore, create, and connect with the world around them. Science classes transform as children dig into garden beds, observe local wildlife, and study plants and insects firsthand. History and geography lessons are enriched as students explore natural habitats and ancient trees, fostering an appreciation for the world they inhabit.

Outdoor learning at Newbridge also encourages teamwork, resilience, and critical thinking. Through team-building exercises, nature trails, orienteering and creative problem-solving activities, our pupils gain more than academic knowledge; they develop the confidence and independence that will carry them through life.

Outdoor learning is one of the many ‘bridges’ that we create at Newbridge for each individual, to help them reach their potential.

At Newbridge, our grounds are not just a place to play or admire - they are a place to grow, learn, and love the world around us. Book a personal tour with our Headmistress and discover the ‘school behind the house’, where every day is an adventure in education.

sporting success at old hall school

A Shropshire school is celebrating a string of sporting successes with a renewed emphasis on at least the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day for children.

Old Hall School has consistently invested in specialist staff and reorganised its timetable to allow for more sports lessons during the school week while encouraging active playtimes and more access to varied outdoor spaces throughout the day.

The 60 minutes target of sport, play and activity is spearheaded by Sport England and research has shown that not only does it improve health outcomes but it also boosts resilience, emotional wellbeing and can have a positive impact on brain function.

Every child at Old Hall swims every week in their own onsite swimming pool while extra squads are also organised after school for those who are swimming competitively.

A number of after-school clubs are aimed at offering further opportunities for physical activity and collaborations involving pupils from Wrekin College, part of the same educational Trust, have aimed to inspire youngsters to enjoy being part of team games.

A number of individual pupils are now competing and enjoying significant success at county level in various

disciplines including swimming, football, cricket and athletics. One pupil has been accepted into the West Bromwich Albion girls’ football academy and two other pupils into the Wolverhampton Academy.

Teams at the school have also been involved in almost a hundred fixtures with other schools featuring matches and tournaments over the last year and have picked up some coveted trophies.

Both the Old Hall Under 11 girls’ and boys’ football teams won the coveted Shrewsbury School competition this term, and both have progressed through to the next rounds of the County Cup. Old Hall took the trophy at their own Under 10 girls’ hockey tournament with over 60 children taking part.

“The benefits of regular moderate to vigorous physical activity every day for children are well documented, “ added Mrs Karacan.

“We have a dedicated Games and PE team here and I am very proud of the work they do to ensure the children are taking part in significant periods of activity every day while they are at school. They also put in the time to ensure that our fixture schedule is a busy one and that every child between Years 3 to 6 takes part in competitive fixtures every term. It’s quite the logistical undertaking but we know it makes such a huge difference to children in so many ways.

“They are healthier, happier and more able to deal with any anxiety and stress in a more constructive way. It also improves the brain by stimulating growth in the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory. Young people’s ability to concentrate has also been shown to improve after physical activity.”

Old Hall School has also directed resources towards specialist teaching in digital technology, modern foreign languages, music and drama, sciences and art with Spanish taught from Reception and an Innovation Lab where pupils have tackled a variety of projects aimed at teaching vital 21st century skills.

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES

THE BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS

With over 50 years in the hairdressing industry, Nick and Royston’s greatest legacy is the incredible talent they have nurtured and inspired. This year’s British Hairdressing Awards was a testament to their influence, with three finalists trained under their guidance.

Invited by ‘Welsh Nick’, to join his table at the final ceremony held at the iconic The Grosvenor Hotel, Welsh Nick joined Royston Blythe Shrewsbury after seeking Nick and Royston expertise to refine his skills. At the salon for over 8 years, before opening Nicholas James in South Wales, Nick has established a thriving salon and a growing celebrity clientele. He has remained close friends with Nick and Royston, who had continued to help and support his journey and were thrilled to join him for this very special evening.

A great opportunity to catch up with some old faces, the night ended on an emotional high, with Welsh Nick scooping the award for Wales and Southwest Hairdresser of The Year. What an achievement after only three years! Congratulations to Nick.

NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING

After 6 very happy years in the beautiful village of Chesterton, Nick and Royston have decided to move on. Their stunning home had been completely renovated, so it was no surprise that it sold on the very first day of viewings. Completion of the sale was in an amazing 5 weeks!

So, a massive thank you to Caroline Eaton from Berriman Eaton, for their excellent service.

Where are they off to, I hear you all ask? Well, all will be revealed in our next edition - stay tuned!

This year marked the 10th anniversary of Tilly’s Charity Gala in aid of CoppaFeel, held at Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa. The event, organised by Sian, owner of the beautiful bridal boutique, Tilly Trotters, was a sparkling celebration of generosity and community spirit.

Nick and Royston joined friends Ami, Gemma and Jade Dugdalerecently crowned Wedding Planner of the Year - to enjoy an evening of music by Tom Kirkpatrick, champagne and canapés. The gala was an unforgettable night for a truly worthwhile cause. Here’s to many more years of this incredible event!

MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY BALL

The prestigious Recognition Awards and Charity Ball for the Midlands Air Ambulance took place at the Motorcycle Museum, and Nick and Royston were honoured to present one of the awards. The evening celebrated the selfless dedication of lifesaving air crew, tireless fundraisers and committed volunteers.

Hosted by Ed James (Heart FM), Richie Anderson (BBC Radio 2) and Nina Hossain (ITN), alongside entertainer Paul Elliott from the Chuckle Brothers, guests were welcomed with a cocktail reception before enjoying a delicious three-course dinner.

The night was a heartfelt tribute to exceptional individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities - a truly special and inspiring occasion.

TILLY’S CHARITY GALA

willkommen to Vienna, a city of art, culture and music

Vienna, Austria’s glorious capital is located on the banks of the mighty River Danube and close to the borders of Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Vienna’s historic centre features imposing castles, opulent buildings reflecting Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural styles, beautiful verdant parks, and the late 19th century Ringstraße. The centre of Vienna was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and in 2018 a study undertaken by the Economist Intelligence Unit, ranked the city as the best in the world for its quality of life. The city, which is crammed with art museums, places of interest and popular attractions continues to draw more than 6.8 million tourists every year.

My explorations of Vienna’s rich cultural heritage began at the dazzling Hofburg Palace, which was the centre of the Habsburg monarchy from 1273 to 1918 and includes the Imperial Treasury where the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, which dates back to the 10th century, is displayed. The glittering treasures include the Imperial Austrian Crown, which was made for the Emperor Rudolf II in 1602, the Imperial Cross, the Holy Lance and an extensive collection of elaborate coronation vestments. Also on display is one of the world’s largest emeralds and of course it is absolutely mesmerising. The Hofburg Palace is also the principal venue for the world famous Silvesterball, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary on 31 December this year.

Keen to develop a deeper understanding of the Habsburgs I headed for the Imperial Apartments, which served as the residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, who was affectionately known as Sisi. The 24 rooms offer the visitor an opportunity to take a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era and with 24 rooms crammed with twinkling crystal chandeliers, beautiful furniture, statues and works of art, there is much to admire. The Sisi Museum, also within the Hofburg complex, celebrates the life of Empress Elisabeth and exhibits include many of her personal possessions and portraits, which capture her beauty.

Seeking a place to relax, I headed for another popular attraction, which is a short stroll away, within the Hofburg Palace complex. The Imperial Butterfly House, which was once a retreat for Emperor Franz Josef I and Sisi, the Empress of Austria, is a tropical oasis, housed within a beautiful Art Noveau palm house, provides the ideal spot to take a seat when a busy itinerary affects the feet. 400 free flying, colourful butterflies flutter around past waterfalls, settling on exotic plants and enticing all visitors.

Due to its impressive musical legacy, which stretches from the era of Viennese Classicism up to the beginning of the 20th century, Vienna is known as the city of music and has been home to many celebrated composers of international recognition. Birthplace of Schubert, Strauss, Schoenberg and Berg, Vienna also became home to Beethoven, Haydn, Brahms, Mahler and Mozart.

To appreciate Vienna’s musical heritage I attended an exceptional performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at Karlskirche on Argentinierstraße. St Charles Church, one of Vienna’s many architectural gems, was completed in 1739 and features the most beautiful cupola. The High Altar, which has undergone renovation, captures the viewer as it has regained its original colourful grandeur. The frescoes within the cupola represent the glory of Saint Charles Borromeo, the patron saint of the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI, and it is a spectacular sight. In 1741 Vivaldi died in Vienna and he was buried a few metres away from Karlskirche, which is the ideal venue for such a stirring concert, expertly performed by the Orchestra 1756 on period instruments.

Following the concert and in search of a tasty bite to eat, I headed for the Café Motto am Fluss located on Franz Josefs Kai, beside the Danube. Whilst admiring the view and watching the various vessels sailing sedately by I sampled the delicious Asparagus Risotto, which was served with aplomb, and accompanied by a glass of 2017 Gruner Veltliner Belle Naturelle, it was a first class dish. For a more formal affair, the Restaurant Motto am Fluss, on the floor below, serves an outstanding dish of crispy pork, glazed in Tong Hao, chilli, honey and served with spicy carrot and a glass of 2017 Chardonnay Juris enhances the flavours to another level.

There is a wide selection of hotels in Vienna but for those seeking space, peace and privacy the Aparthotel Adagio is ideal. The property is located on Uraniastrasse beside the Danube with tram stops right outside and the historic city centre is within walking distance. Facilities include a fitness centre, a sauna, private indoor parking, complimentary Wifi and a self-service laundry room. My spacious one bedroom air-conditioned apartment featured a huge balcony overlooking the Danube and it was the ideal spot to relax with a tipple after a full day of explorations. The lounge featured contemporary furnishings including a plump sofa and footstool with a huge television/radio and the kitchen included all the gadgets required to rustle up a breakfast. There is a supermarket with an excellent deli just a short hop and skip away but as my cooking skills are rather lacking I succumbed to a late lie-in and opted for the scrumptious hot and cold buffet breakfast and made plans for the day.

Another of Vienna’s major attractions is St Stephen’s Cathedral and I took a leisurely stroll beside the Danube and then made my way to Stephensplatz. Founded in 1137 the cathedral is an outstanding example of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles and features a multi-coloured opulent roof consisting of 230,000 glazed, patterned tiles, which, when flooded in golden sunlight is a magnificent spectacle. On the south side, there is a mosaic of the double-headed eagle which represents the empire, once ruled by the Habsburgs. St Stephen’s Cathedral is the resting place of Frederick III,

the first Emperor of the House of Habsburg. His tomb is adorned with 240 statues and is a fine example of medieval workmanship. The cathedral, which was constructed in limestone, soars 446 feet high and the south bell tower is a principal feature in Vienna’s skyline. It is said that the composer Beethoven realised the extent of his deafness when he noticed birds flying out of the bell tower and did not hear the bells ringing.

Strolling back towards my hotel and feeling peckish I spotted the Hard Rock Café on Rotenturmstraße. I was swiftly escorted to a table in the British section and as I devoured the delicious baby back ribs and sipped on my sparkling blackberry sangria I tried, to no avail, to avoid being distracted by a spellbinding collection of memorabilia, which includes Mick Jagger’s military style coat worn during the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour, Ian Anderson’s (of Jethro Tull) flute convair, John Entwistle’s (of The Who) bass guitar, the Moody Blue’s Minimoog synthesizer and signed photographs of the Beatles, the piccolo trumpet played on Penny Lane, and Sgt Pepper’s horn arrangement, signed by the Fab Four. I raised my glass to the wonderful city of Vienna and to the music and lyrics of Lennon and McCartney……

‘And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make’.

children’s wishes come true thanks to the agent rainmaker community

A Wolverhampton firm is helping seriously and terminally ill children to have their dreams come true thanks to its outstanding fundraising effort.

Agent Rainmaker held its two-day Agent Rainmaker Live (AR Live) this month which raised more than £74,000 for fellow Wolverhampton-based Promise Dreams – a charity which supports children and their families across the country who are facing serious illness or terminal diagnosis.

The support offered to children ranges from once-ina-lifetime experiences and holidays, to meeting their celebrity heroes and receiving specialist equipment in their homes to make their daily lives easier.

Agent Rainmaker is a long-time champion of the charity and to date have raised over £274,000 at its AR Live events.

Every year, they send a videography team to film a family who has benefitted from a Promise Dream, with this year telling the impactful story of Hallie – a young girl who was able to make special memories with her parents and watch her favourite animal in the elephant lodge at a safari park.

Nikki Yeomans, Manager of Promise Dreams, said: “Asking people to dig deep is incredibly hard at the

moment, so we’re genuinely overwhelmed and so grateful for this phenomenal donation. Promise Dreams is about putting smiles on children’s faces and creating special memories for families, and we couldn’t do this without the support of Agent Rainmaker and its community.”

Agent Rainmaker’s founder Sally Lawson was thrilled to see such a substantial amount donated – surpassing the last event by almost double.

“Thank you to all of the agents who gave so generously – we cannot begin to thank them enough for helping to make this year our biggest fundraising effort yet, despite the country facing financial uncertainty. The work the charity does is truly life-changing and we’re honoured to be able to continue our support of them.”

NEW YEAR, NEW SPINE: 5 Tips and Tricks for a Healthy Back

Based in Codsall, Bilbrook, Wolverhampton Chiropractic Clinic is a modern, technologically advanced chiropractic clinic that empowers patients to prioritise their health, improve their well-being and find relief from pain. With a sister clinic based in Stafford, the team are excited to bring over 31 years of experience to South Staffordshire.

As we enter 2025, it is the perfect time to think about fresh new starts and set realistic New Years resolutions focussing on one of the most important parts of your body; the spine. Wolverhampton Chiropractic Clinic understands that back and neck pain can affect your quality of life, and have listed five recommendations to help guide you to care for your spine.

1.

Get Moving

Strengthening the muscles that support your spine and core is key to preventing pain and injury. There are a range of activities that can be incorporated into your routine. Whether it’s Pilates, yoga, swimming, or even simple stretching, aim for at least 30 minutes of activity, for a minimum of three times per week to keep your spine in peak condition.

2. Sleep Smart

The ideal sleeping position has minimal physical stress on your spine. Lie on your back rather than your stomach and invest in a high-quality mattress that is supportive. Make sure to change your mattress every 6-8 years.

3. Mind Your Posture

Poor posture is a major contributor to back pain. Support your spine with ergonomic furniture when sitting at a desk, avoid slouching when relaxing in front of the tv and be careful with how you carry bags and boxes.

4. Foot Vitality

There are several nerves that are connected from your spine to your feet and the footwear you choose can affect your spine in many ways. Footwear that provides proper arch support and cushioning will help to distribute your body weight evenly, reducing strain on your spine.

5. Schedule Regular Chiropractic Appointments

Routine check-ups with the Wolverhampton Chiropractic Clinic team is the best way to prevent any minor issues from developing into major problems, and is the key to maintaining a healthy spine all year round. Wolverhampton Chiropractic Clinic uses a holistic approach, treating the underlying issues that contribute to poor spinal health and back pain, not just the symptoms. who needs special contact lenses?

Have you been told your eyes are “too complicated for contact lenses?”

Are you unhappy with the vision in your current contact lenses?

Do you struggle with your vision in your current glasses?

Dry eyes? Or do you play sport or work in dusty environments?

If so then Scleral Lenses could be perfect for you!

Whilst soft disposable lenses are very common nowadays, there are many people that they do not suit.

One of our specialisms at Flint Optometry is the fitting and care of hard and gas permeable contact lenses, including scleral lenses.

Scleral lenses are large rigid-surface contact lenses custom designed and computer made for each individual patient.  There are many applications for scleral lenses ranging from irregular corneas to correcting common causes of blurry vision. Many scleral

lens wearers have underlying medical eye conditions such as keratoconus, ocular surface disease, or corneal grafts (transplants). Others may have a severe dry eye.

Fitting these lenses is a specialist skill but scleral contact lenses are surprisingly easy and comfortable to wear. Sclerals are most commonly fitted for people with keratoconus – this corneal condition results in a progressive blurring of vision that cannot be corrected with spectacles or soft lenses. A scleral lens corrects the vision much more effectively by covering the whole cornea.

Flint Optometry has a growing cohort of patients wearing scleral lenses and they are transformative! Often a patient with keratoconus can’t see well enough to drive or even work without them.

interesting facts about wills

1. Over half of the adult population does not have a will. Without a will there is a bigger chance of disputes arising when a loved one dies

2. A will is not the same as a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). A will is used when a person dies, an LPA is used to help a person during their lifetime.

3. Animals can’t be beneficiaries! You can leave gifts to animal charities or course.

4. You can use your will to appoint guardians for children under 18 should both parents die.

5. If you divorce or remarry you should change your will

6. If you die without a will, your spouse is not entitled to the whole of your estate and if you are not married or in a civil partnership, your loved one may not be entitled to anything.

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS FOR ALMOST 150 YEARS

7. If you do not make a will and you have no surviving relatives, your estate passes to the Crown.

8. If you have debts when you die, your estate will have to pay them, they don’t disappear upon your death.

If you haven’t got a will, consider these facts and then why not contact the team at Thornes.

the uk budget 2024: key personal finance and tax implications

On 30 October 2024, Chancellor Rachel Reeves unveiled the Autumn Budget, introducing significant tax changes that will impact households, pensions, and inheritance planning. With a focus on generating revenue and addressing economic challenges, this budget brings key implications for personal finances.

Inheritance Tax: Major Overhaul

One of the most notable changes announced was to inheritance tax (IHT). The government has frozen the nil-rate band at £325,000 until 2028. This threshold, unchanged since 2009, increasingly captures estates as property values rise. Anything above this threshold remains subject to a 40% tax rate.

A pivotal change is the inclusion of pensions in estates subject to IHT from April 2027. Previously, pensions were excluded from taxable estates, allowing beneficiaries to inherit them free of IHT. This adjustment is expected to significantly impact wealthier households, particularly those using pensions for legacy planning. The government projects this change will generate substantial additional revenue, but critics warn it could complicate financial planning for retirees and their beneficiaries alike.

Pensions: Taxation and Opportunities

In addition to changes in inheritance tax, pensions were a focal point of the budget. The freeze on the Lifetime Allowance (LTA) continues, with no inflationary adjustments until 2028. This means more individuals with substantial pension savings will face tax charges when

withdrawing funds exceeding the LTA, currently set at £1,073,100.

The inclusion of pension pots in taxable estates adds another layer of complexity. Financial advisors are urging individuals to reassess their pension contribution strategies and consider alternative tax-efficient vehicles for retirement savings.

However, there was positive news for pensioners: State Pensions will increase by 4.1%, in line with inflation. This rise, under the triple lock guarantee, ensures pensioners maintain purchasing power amid rising living costs.

Income Tax and NICs: A Higher Burden for Many

Tax changes also extend to income tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs). The government confirmed that the freeze on income tax thresholds, initially set to expire in 2028, will now adjust for inflation starting in 2029. In the interim, as wages rise with inflation, many individuals will find themselves pushed into higher tax brackets—a phenomenon known as fiscal drag.

For workers and employers, NICs will see significant changes. The rate for employers will rise from 13.8% to 15%, while the threshold for liability will drop from £9,100 to £5,000. These measures, effective April 2025, will increase costs for businesses and could indirectly affect wages and employment prospects.

Capital Gains Tax Changes

The budget also increased rates for Capital Gains Tax

(CGT). From 30 October 2024, the lower rate has risen from 10% to 18%, and the higher rate from 20% to 24%. This affects individuals selling investments, second properties, or other chargeable assets. The annual CGT exemption remains frozen at £3,000, amplifying the impact of these changes on middle-income earners and investors.

These adjustments incentivise taxpayers to consider tax-efficient investment strategies, such as Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs.

Living Wage and Disposable Income

To counterbalance some of these tax hikes, the government announced a 6.7% increase in the National Living Wage, bringing it to £12.21 per hour. This will directly benefit low-income workers, though rising inflation and higher tax burdens may offset these gains for many households.

For families, the freeze on income tax thresholds and rising costs for essentials, such as transport and utilities, mean disposable income could shrink further. The single bus fare cap will rise from £2 to £3, and duties on tobacco products will increase, creating additional costs for some households.

Strategies for Personal Finance Management

Given these sweeping changes, this emphasises the importance of proactive planning.

Here are some key strategies:

1. Review your generational wealth plans: With pensions now part of taxable estates, consider

gifting assets during your lifetime or exploring trust structures to reduce IHT liabilities.

2. Maximise Tax-Efficient Investments: Make full use of ISAs, which offer tax-free growth and withdrawals, to mitigate the impact of higher CGT rates.

3. Review Pension Contributions: Evaluate whether continued contributions are the best strategy or if alternative investments might better serve longterm goals.

Conclusion

The Autumn Budget 2024 introduces transformative changes to personal finances, particularly through adjustments to inheritance tax, pensions, and income tax thresholds.

kia picanto ‘2’

If you are in the marketplace for a small city car, your choices are somewhat limited. If you look around, you will find that manufacturers are gradually abandoning this particular type of vehicle due to European legislation and profitability, writes Bob Hickman.

One manufacturer who remains loyal is Kia, the Picanto although it is now a few years old it has been given a mid-life facelift and it looks as fresh and attractive as a small city car can do. Kia have taken the steps of amending the position of the headlights, added a few chrome strips and LED light bars, different tail lights and of course the brand-new Kia logo, I liked the old Kia badge and am not convinced on the new one.

Internally the make over has continued and all the models in the range, except the entry level, get an 8” touchscreen and digital instrumentation binnacle. Considering the small external size. The interior is quite impressive, as a 6-footer I could sit in the back, with plenty of leg, head, and shoulder room, so all in all quite an attractive package for a small city car.

Kia have amended the engine range, a 1-litre 62 bhp, and a 1.2-litre, producing slightly more power. These are primarily city cars so if you are going to do a lot of motorway cruising be prepared to work the engine. In and around town the attraction of the Picanto is its manoeuvrability, its super light steering and the fact that you can clearly see everywhere and everything. Add in to the equation a reversing camera and small tight spots hold no fear to anybody within this type of vehicle.

My particular derivative came with a 998cc 3-cylinder engine, which rumbled and roared, and that is not meant as a criticism, it is just a quaint factor of 3-cylinder engines. Top speed is quoted at 90mph, but this is a city car so who is bothered by top speed and a 0-60 if you are interested is a very lethargic 15 seconds. Kia suggests on a combined mpg of about 54mpg and during a week in company with the Picanto the computer suggested that I had achieved 49.8mpg.

From a driver and passenger perspective, there was more than enough room, the driver has the benefit that the steering wheel can be adjusted for height but it cannot retract or extend outwards. There is plenty of storage space, cup holders and a little tray in front of them. If you need to carry your bottle of water, the door

bins will hold them quite well. However, don’t expect to get a lot of luggage in the boot, it is after all a city car, 255 litres means that you have enough room for the shopping or the pushchair, but don’t expect to be able to carry a set of golf clubs or any large items. The rear seats can be split 60/40 so you do have the advantage of increasing luggage space.

I did like the factor that the car is not controlled by the infotainment system, regular readers of my reviews know I have an absolute hate of infotainment screens where everything is controlled and it is necessary to avert your eyes and attention to control even a mundane thing like turning the heater up or down. The Kia factory have not gone down the route of a lot of other manufacturers.

It is difficult to accept the Picanto has been on sale for nearly 20 years, it benefits from the Kia 7-year or 100,000 miles warranty, in this day and age that is seriously reassuring.

The Kia Picanto ‘2’ is also not a budget breaking car, the on the road price of the vehicle was £15,595.

seat arona

The market place for small SUV’s is awash with models and derivatives, but if you are a lover of the VAG Group, i.e., Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, then the Seat Arona should be high on your list of possibilities, writes Bob Hickman.

From a driving perspective the Arona is like a comfort blanket, if you are used to a VAG car, you will immediately be comforted by the instrumentation and controls, the manufacturers seem to raid the same parts bin and it is reassuring.

The Arona as tested, came with what you would normally think of a diminutive 1-litre petrol engine. The engine produces 115 bhp and has a 0-60 in 10.3 seconds and an astounding top speed where permissible of 120mph. The CO2 g/km at 131 is acceptable. What is a big feature on this vehicle was however, the 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, this seemed to have an uncanny knack of always knowing what gear to be in whatever circumstances, the gear change was so smooth and effortless you don’t really know the vehicle has changed gear.

The driver and front passenger can be accommodated without any problems whatsoever. On the steering wheel there are lots of adjustment and I like to see a lot of the controls are contained within the steering wheel. There was a huge central screen for infotainment systems and the dashboard right in front of the driver so you can see the important dials and a digital speedometer. What I did particularly like was the heater controls which actually had a separate section below the central screen so no fiddling or messing about with touchscreens, to adjust the temperature or the controls. Surprisingly enough in this day and age the Arona sill had an old-fashioned handbrake.

The driver has the opportunity to choose the mode of driving, be it Eco, Normal or Sport. I preferred to leave it in Eco and see what the vehicle was capable of doing and in a week of almost 300 miles on a variety of roads a lengthy motorway and a lot in and around town the computer suggested 47mpg and that is not to be sneezed at.

Whilst the Arona is not a big SUV, it does give you a slightly elevated driving position and this of course does reflect in the visibility and being able to see and enjoy the dynamics of the vehicle. As you would expect in this day and age electronic features which gives you a lane keeping system as standard, rear parking sensors are found in addition to the front parking sensors and a rearview camera, which are on my must have list.

Whilst the Arona is marketed as a 4-seater I think the rear seats are less accommodating and the boot space was somewhat restrictive for 4 passengers. The rear could be good for children and teenagers but the legroom and headroom are restricted and I wouldn’t want to do a lengthy journey in the rear of this vehicle.

In addition to the electronic features to control your driving, the standard vehicle Arona also has cruise control, hill hold assist and a rear parking sensors, however why you would have a hold assist when you have a handbrake.

The Seat Arona has a 3-year or 60,000 miles warranty. You can extend it to 4 years at an optional cost and 5 years if you want to add another £320 assuming you are going to keep the vehicle that long.

I do like manufacturers that offer a fixed price service plan, and Seat offer this and it is worth looking in to if you intend to keep the vehicle knowing how expensive the service will be to have it included in the initial package.

The Seat Arona Limited Edition 1.0 TSI 115PS DSG came in a quite pleasant Graphene Grey metallic paint with black microsuede interior upholstery and it had a price on the road of £28,620.
