spring décor 2024 by

home Jennifer Suzanne

It’s still January while I’m writing this article but I love to see all the spring flowers creeping into the shops and my spring bulbs popping up in the garden too.

March is a good time to start switching up our home accessories and to bring in the fresher touches of spring into our homes. Here are my top 5 tips to make sure you have lots of springtime loveliness in your home - and also my advice on how to add in Pantone Colour of the Year, ‘Peach Fuzz’.

Here
some
inspiration ideas using these colours.
ACCENT WALL:
one wall in your living room or bedroom to create a focal point. This warm and inviting colour will instantly brighten the space and serve as a backdrop for creative expression.

STATEMENT FURNITURE:

Integrate furniture pieces in ‘Peach Fuzz’ such as a sofa, accent chairs or a coffee table. These key elements can add a pop of positivity to the room while maintaining a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

SOFT FURNISHINGS:

Incorporate ‘Peach Fuzz’ through soft furnishings like throw pillows, blankets, and curtains. These accents can be easily swapped out or updated, allowing for a flexible and ever-evolving expression of creativity.

ARTWORK AND WALL DÉCOR:

Choose artwork or wall décor that features these tones. This could be through paintings, prints, or even DIY art projects that align with your personal style. Abstract and vibrant pieces can enhance the overall creativity of the space.

PLANTS AND GREENERY:

Introduce indoor plants with green foliage to complement the ‘Peach Fuzz’ colour. The combination of soft peach and natural green creates a refreshing and harmonious ambiance, promoting a sense of wellbeing.

home

COLOURFUL ACCESSORIES:

Use peach fuzz-coloured accessories such as vases, candles, and decorative bowls to sprinkle the colour throughout the room. These small touches can make a big impact on the overall aesthetic.

LIGHTING:

Opt for lighting fixtures in warm tones to enhance the this colour scheme. Pendant lights, floor lamps, or table lamps with soft, warm light can contribute to a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

MIX WITH NEUTRALS:

CREATIVE WORKSPACES:

If you have a home office or a designated creative space, incorporate these hues in the décor. This could include desk accessories, shelving or even an accent wall to inspire creativity and self-expression.

TEXTURED FABRICS:

Experiment with textured fabrics in ‘Peach Fuzz’, such as a shaggy rug or a textured accent wall. These elements add depth and interest to the space while maintaining a welcoming feel.

Pair ‘Peach Fuzz’ with neutral tones like whites, greys, or soft beige to create a balanced and sophisticated look. This combination ensures that the room remains visually appealing and versatile.

Remember, the key is to have fun and let your personal style shine through. Feel free to mix and match elements to create a space that reflects your unique taste and promote a positive and creative atmosphere.

SPRING DÉCOR

Homes are a place to heal and to escape. This spring/summer season we want our homes to comfort and nourish us - and by changing up your interiors to suit the changing of the seasons, it can create a great feeling in your home.

home 8

SPRING TRENDS

My top 3 spring trends to look out for are prints and patterns, statement floral and warm colours and hues.

Prints and patterns are making their way into our homes and are back in style for 2024. Florals are a classic spring statement and can be incorporated into your textiles, wallpaper and art. Also decorating your home using warm hues such as greens, browns and terracotta, add a sense of depth into your home this season.

COLOURS

Springtime when blossom appears, grass grows and spring bulbs flower, choose complementary colours which bring that feeling of nature into your home.

FABRICS

Spring is all about creating an airy feel to your space, so lighter fabrics are a good way to achieve this. Switch out fur throws and knitted wool and add in linen and cotton alternatives.

HOME SCENTS

For spring, switch out your wintery warming candles and opt for lighter, subtler candle scents in floral and natural blends… think of scents like cotton, jasmine, citrus and mint.

GREENERY

Plants are the best way to create a fresh feel at home, so tend to your plants as they most likely need care by trimming dead leaves and a good drink if the soil’s gone dry.

Let’s not forget Easter styling – In 2024 I predict that the farmhouse rustic style for your Easter decorations will be inspired by rattan, porcelain bunny rabbits, pastel blues, yellow and beautiful boho inspired dried flower wreath arrangements.

Nearly a quarter of a million homeowners in the UK installed solar panels in 2023.

With energy prices continuing to rise, is it any wonder that more people are turning to alternative options like solar power? As technology improves, the cost of basic solar systems has come down and there are more options to choose from.

The right solar system won’t just bring your bills down, they could earn you money back as well. Our forecasting software can give you a realistic idea of your potential savings, based on your address and allowing for the unpredictable British weather as well.

For example - £1000 in the bank may make £35 a year in interest. £1000 invested into solar energy could save and return £150-£250 per year, for 20-30 years.

Investing in free energy generated by the sun is more a case of when, not if!

How do you choose the right installer?

One of the problems homeowners face is finding the right installer and system for their property. Solar panel technology can feel bewildering. Do you need planning permission? Is your roof suitable, and positioned to get the most sunshine? Is the right finance deal available?

Here’s the good news.

An independent consultant will

• Offer a free survey, which includes assessing the quality of your roof.

• Measure your current usage against your future needs.

• Show you the alternative systems to suit your budget and the appearance of your home.

• Explain the possible returns on your investment.

• Find the right installer for you from local approved contractors.

• Leave you the options to consider in your own time.

Solmove are independent energy consultants. We are not tied to any one installer. We only work with

companies that have impeccable reviews and a long trading history. And we never send round a pushy salesman.

What we will do is give you independent advice, use state-of-the-art software to accurately predict energy use vs potential exported energy, and show you a range of panel options including roof mounted or groundmounted panels and ‘almost invisible’ solar roof tiles.

For your personalised, no-pressure, free advice from experienced renewable energy consultants, email info@solmove.co.uk or call us on 01384 732166.

breathing in the beautiful spring air

Well, it’s been a long winter but finally the lighter nights and sunnier spring day are arriving which means more fun times for your beloved pets. Playtime in the garden, longer less muddy walks, and even simply basking in the sun while breathing in the beautiful spring air, it’s happy times once again.

With Easter upon us, why not make your pets happy times even happier and make them some of their very own Easter treats! You could get the kids to help you come up with fun names for them and make them in the shape of Easter eggs and bunnies, there are plenty of recipes for pet treats on the internet. You could even play a pet friendly version of an Easter egg hunt with your furry one, I’m sure they will sniff out those home-made delights in no time at all. There are a few things that you need to be aware of to keep your furry friends safe though, hot cross buns can be dangerous to pets because grapes, sultanas, raisins and currants are highly toxic to dogs and cats, a very small quantity can lead to kidney failure. Chocolate is also dangerous for dogs, cats, rabbits and many other animals too, it contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to them and can actually be fatal. The darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is, so keep those Easter eggs out of reach and ensure that your children don’t share their chocolate goodies with their pet siblings.

Sweets are also a popular Easter treat but these too might be dangerous for your pets, some sweets contain an artificial sweetener called Xylitol, just a small amount can be toxic. In fact, this sweetener is also found in some nut butters, cakes, jams and ice cream too.

Other hazards lurk around the house and garden at this time of the year, many of you may have daffodils and lilies in the house over Easter, please take care because they are very dangerous to pets. Daffodils are toxic to dogs and cats; the flowers and leaves can be harmful if ingested. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, it only takes a small amount to be ingested for them to be poisoned. All parts of the plant are toxic, pollen may fall from the flower on to the cat’s coat and be ingested later when they groom themselves, they may eat a petal or even have a drink of water from the vase, this can lead to kidney failure. Kittens are particularly at risk as they explore their environment and can so easily ingest part of the lily. Certain varieties of lily are also dangerous to dogs and rabbits. Rabbits are curious little souls and will try anything, so you have to be especially careful what you have in their environment. Breath in the beautiful spring air and enjoy the lighter nights and warmer days!!!

Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

film reviews by joe jenkinson

DUNE: PART II (12A)

DIRECTOR: DENIS VILLENEUVE

Starring: Timothee Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler

The spellbinding film event of the Spring is the followup to the science-fiction epic Dune (2021). Timothee Chalamet returns as the hero, Paul, continuing his revenge quest against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Director Denis Villeneuve masses a plethora of stunning visuals crafted only for the cinema and a star-studded cast, including Elvis’ (2022) Austin Butler, who embodies a ruthless villain role.

THE FALL GUY (12A)

DIRECTOR: DAVID LEITCH

Starring: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt

The Fall Guy sees a world-weary stuntman (Barbie’s Gosling) thrust into a dangerous espionage adventure to find the star of his girlfriend’s (Oppenheimer’s Blunt) movie, who has gone missing. Placing a stuntman as the protagonist gives action movies a much-needed love letter, celebrating the thrills of cinematic spectacle and effects and the efforts made to achieve them.

KUNG FU PANDA 4 (U)

DIRECTOR: MIKE MITCHELL

Starring: Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman and Akwafina

Everyone’s favourite Kung-Fu fighting, dumplingloving panda returns for a new adventure of laughs and action. So far, the Kung-Fu Panda series has produced exceptional animated gems in its first and second outings, yet the third one (from 2016) seemed half the effort. Hopefully, this will recapture the magic with some new faces such as Oscar-winner, Ke Huy Quan.

GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (12)

DIRECTOR: ADAM WINGARD

Starring: Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry

We previously saw the Titans, King Kong and Godzilla, clash on the small screens of streaming services back in 2020. Now, audiences are treated to the grand spectacle of the cinema screenings in this sequel, where the two monsters now ally against a common enemy. The sensational destructive action will not disappoint.

chicken and chorizo ragu

with chilli pesto french bean salad

This is a lovely winter warmer dish that is also great on a spring evening served with some locally baked sour dough bread and butter. I get my sour dough bread from Medicine Bakery in Codsall, it’s made with flour, water and salt, nothing else. It’s the best kind of bread for your gut.

INGREDIENTS:

CHICKEN

1200g of chicken thigh

2 or 3 tbsp of smoked paprike (sweet or spicy)

100ml of olive oil

1 tbsp of balsamic vinegar

Maldon smoked sea salt

SAUCE

200g of chorizo

2 large red onions diced

6 garlic cloves sliced /diced/pureed

200g of sun-blush tomatoes

1 400g tin of chopped tomatoes

50ml of tomato oil from the sunblush

1 roasted pepper

1 lemon

400g French beans trimmed

2 red chillies

50g of cashew nuts

50g of grated parmesan

2 garlic cloves

PORTIONS MINUTES HOURS DAY

METHOD:

Start by chekcing the chicken thigh for any little bones and then cut into bite size pieces. Coat with the smoked paprika, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Start this the day before for better infusing of flavours. Dice the chorizo into small chunks and fry off on a lowish heat to bring out the oil. Once the chorizo starts to brown a little add in the red onion and soften, add some of the tomato oil if needed. Now add in the garlic and sautee until softened and then add in the tinned chopped tomatoes and allow to simmer until thick and everything has come together to form a nice rich sauce. Stir in the juice of 1 lemon when ready to serve.

Whilst the sauce is simmering away sprinkle the chicken with sea salt and cook in the oven at 180ºc for about 30 minutes and then into into the sauce with adding the sunblush tomatoes.

To make the pesto simply roast the chillies for about 8 minutes and then put all the ingredients in a food processor and blitz either to a chunky or smooth consistency depending on your preference. Steam the beans until they are no longer squeaky when you bite into them and allow to cool before tossing with the pesto. Serve in a salad bowl and top with crumbled feta cheese.

Cut the bread into dunking chunks and serve with butter.

SERVE WITH

Portion the chicken into bowls, garnish with fresh herbs and toasted nuts and seeds for crunch and serve with fresh sour dough bread on a side plate with butter.

cocoa pavlova with vanilla mascarpone

This is the perfect desseert if you have a sweet tooth for chocolate. If you’re not a big chocolate fan you can leave the cocoa out and replace the sugar and vanilla with lemon curd in the mascarpone.

INGREDIENTS:

2 large egg whites

200g of caster sugar

1 tbsp of cocoa powder

Splash of water

4oog of mascarpone

1 tsp of vanilla extract

1 tbsp of dark brown sugar

1 bag of malteasers

EQUIPMENT

Stand or hand mixer with whisk attachment

Baking tray

Piping bags

Mixing bowl

Measuring spoons

Spatula

6 20 2 5

METHOD:

Carefully seperate the egg whites from the yolks. If there is any yolk in the white, take it out with a spoon otherwise your meringue wont work. Whisk the whites to soft peaks and then gradually add in the sugar whisking on high until firm and glossy.

Mix the cocoa powder and water together to make a loose paste. You can fold the cocoa paste into the meringue or paint the inside of the piping bag with it and then fill the bag with meringue.

Pipe a few dots of meringue onto the baking sheet to secure the parchment paper, press the paper down and then start piping the meringue onto the sheet by creating a circle outwards to 10cms then start piping upwards to create a wall around the circle.

Place the meringues in the oven at 110ºc without the fan for about 2 hours.

Mix the mascasrpone with the brown sugar and vanilla extract. Check the flavour and add more vanilla or sugar if you like it sweeter. Pipe the mascarpone into the centre of the pavlova shell and then crush up or place the malteasers whole on the top.

celebrations at wolverhampton girls’ high school

Yes, we are celebrating! Our school recently underwent a comprehensive Ofsted inspection and we are incredibly proud and delighted to have been rated as Outstanding in all areas.

Our academic success is evident. In 2022-23, an impressive 77% of GCSE grades were in the 7-9 range with a progress 8 score of 0.8, well above average.  The recent Ofsted report highlights that pupils receive an outstanding quality of education at our school, with meticulous curriculum planning that exceeds national expectations.

Alongside academic excellence, here at WGHS we also encourage our girls to continuously strive for their personal best by making the most of every opportunity available. Our motto, ‘Ludus supra praemium,’ which translates to The Game before the Prize, emphasises the value of wholeheartedly being part of the school community. With multiple House events each year and a huge extra-curricular calendar that provides over 80 clubs, Ofsted commended WGHS for its exceptional enrichment offer. “The school provides numerous, varied opportunities to nurture, develop and stretch pupils’ talents and interests. The school has ensured there is something for everyone”.

Join our success story and let us help your daughter unleash her potential.

The WGHS entrance exam is scheduled for September 2024, with registrations closing at the end of June. To provide valuable insights and support for prospective students, we will be conducting free familiarisation sessions in May and June at various primary schools across the city.

These sessions offer a unique opportunity to understand the format of the entrance test, with practical examples provided. By participating, you and your daughter can gain familiarity with the test, enabling peak performance on exam day. Families attending will also receive complimentary access to online familiarisation materials, featuring additional example questions.

Register your details at the webpage below and we will keep you posted with dates and venues for open days (scheduled week beginning 22nd April), familiarisation sessions and the exam date. We extend a warm invitation to attend our events, as the entrance exam is open to anyone aspiring to join the WGHS family!

successes at wrekin

A four-night sell-out run of hit musical Sister Act was one of the highlights in a term packed with success and events across numerous departments at a Shropshire school.

Pupils from all year groups at Wrekin College took centre stage as Sister Act wowed audiences at the end of January with tickets in high demand while other students took on lead roles backstage.

The dramatic triumph was mirrored on the Astroturf in hockey as various year groups also shared the glory with six different teams qualifying for the regional finals.

The U16 and U14 boys’ teams and U13 boys and girls teams were crowned Shropshire champions while the U12 girls’ team and the U18 boys’ team were runners-up earning a place in the finals.

Netball teams have also clocked up impressive results with the U14 team taking a spot in the National Bowl Competition semi-finals and the U19, U16 and U14 teams all competing at the West Midlands Schools Finals. Keeping up with the sporting stars was Year 9 pupil Chloe who secured a stunning third place spot in the Midlands Cross Country Championships after she clinched Shropshire’s top spot earlier this year.

Meanwhile a number of Wrekin’s pupils have achieved medal successes in the Shropshire County Swimming Championships. With 38 gold medals between them, pupils clinched the first place overall in the age 12, 14 and 16 groups, with a host of other medals and placings secured along the way.

Wrekin’s rugby teams are also enjoying a series of wins on their route to the county titles.

The academic team have also been celebrating after Upper Sixth student Cyrus gained a place at Oxford University to read Computer Science - a highly competitive course at one of Britain’s most prestigious universities.

In music the school’s Concert and Jazz Bands are busy in rehearsals preparing for the National Concert Band Festival finals due to be held in Warwick in March. The ensembles both qualified to take part after picking up platinum awards at the regionals held in Oldham last November.

The Chapel Choir are also busy preparing for the finals of the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition.

Head of Wrekin College Mr Toby Spence said the school community had started 2024 with a real burst of positive energy with pupils returning for the new term looking to push for success across the board.

“Sister Act was a wonderful triumph and a resounding success with audiences. I was very impressed with the level of commitment to what was a busy rehearsal schedule but I think most of those lucky enough to get tickets would agree it was worth it,” added Mr Spence.

“This cast and crew should be very proud of the exceptionally high standards achieved and I am very grateful to all those involved including the families who supported all the efforts here in school.”

Mr Spence said they were also delighted with a string of county and regional successes in sports while pupils had also helped see the school stage a number of different events.

“Our youngest pupils in Lancaster House held a superb History and Politics evening which was greatly appreciated by a very interested audience while our Lower Sixth and Year 10 pupils staged an Academic Poster Exhibition for visitors.

“And our huge congratulations go to Sixth Former Cyrus on his offer of a place to read Computer Science at Oxford which is a very significant achievement in a highly competitive process.

“I feel greatly inspired by how our pupils are embracing opportunities particularly at the start of a new year. We all very much enjoy celebrating their successes and encouraging even more endeavours to be a part of something positive that does have a positive impact when it comes to boosting a pupil’s confidence to do their best in all areas.”

Budapest offers visitors an intriguing insight into its colourful maelstrom of history and a vibrant culture. Once a Celtic settlement, then a Roman capital, Budapest was plundered by the Mongols and then re-emerged in the 15th century as a focus for Renaissance humanist culture.

Following 150 years of Ottoman rule, Budapest entered a new era of prosperity in 1873, when unified as a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube, with Buda and Obuda on the west bank and Pest on the east bank. Budapest then became the second capital of AustriaHungary, until that power was disbanded in 1918 and as a result of the Treaty of Trianon in 1920; Hungary lost much of its territory.

Budapest played a pivotal role during the 1848 Revolution, the emergence of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919, Operation Panzerfaust in 1944, the Battle of Budapest in 1945 and the 1956 Revolution. Budapest is now recognised as one of the most beautiful of European cities and a respected World Heritage Site, which includes the banks of the river Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrassy Avenue, Heroes’ Square and the Millennium Underground Railway.

Today, the city attracts approximately 3 million tourists every year as it is the ideal place to view a veritable feast of Hungarian treasures and with 233 museums and galleries to visit there is sure to be a suitable collection of exhibits to placate the most demanding audience. I wandered around the National Hungarian Museum, which was built in 1802 and houses an extensive collection of prints, manuscripts, maps, books and copperplates donated by Count Ferenc Széchényi. The collection attracts hordes of visitors, many of whom are eager to gaze upon an exquisite piano, made by John Broadwood and Sons of London, which, in 1917, belonged to Beethoven. After his death it was sold at auction to a Viennese art dealer and music publisher, who later gave the instrument to Liszt, and in 1887 the National Hungarian Museum, acquired the piano.

I was spellbound by the imposing Buda Royal Palace, built in the 13th century, after the Mongolian invasion. For those of us with an insatiable thirst for art, a visit to the National Gallery, located within the Royal Palace is essential. I viewed Hungary’s masterpieces and other striking works by less well known artists, ranging from the 10th century to the present day. This exceptional permanent collection features works covering the past half century of Hungarian art and includes Medieval and Renaissance stonework and wonderful examples of Gothic wood sculptures and magnificent altar pieces.

For weary travellers and exhausted adventurers the Szèchenyi Spa Baths is just the place for a spot of open air thermal bathing. Located in City Woodland Park, the complex includes three spacious swimming pools and twelve thermal pools. I laid back in the comfort of the tranquil waters with temperatures from 20°C to 38°C, and whilst I enjoyed the comforting warmth I embarked on a leisurely game of chess on a floating board. The waters, which come from two thermal springs under the City Park, are well known for their soothing qualities. Allowing the sulphate, calcium, bicarbonate, magnesium and fluoride acid to treat my aching joints and bothersome back pain, I soon felt rejuvenated and ready to continue with my explorations.

I then sauntered along the grandiose Andrássy Avenue, named after a former prime minister; it is a beautiful boulevard dating back to 1872 and features striking Neo-renaissance mansions and townhouses. The Avenue is a listed World Heritage Site and is one of Budapest’s main shopping areas with luxurious boutiques jostling for space with fine cafes and restaurants. Keen to explore further afield, I took a ride on the Budapest Metro, which was constructed in 1894 and it is the second oldest underground railway system in the world, after the London Underground. The Budapest Metro was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002 and the Russian made Metrovagonmash rolling stock used on the M2 and M3 lines and still in use in the former Soviet Bloc, ensured a fascinating journey.

I took an afternoon stroll across the magnificent cast iron Chain Bridge, designed by William Tierney Clark, the talented English civil engineer who was born in Bristol in 1783. Completed in 1849, the bridge is considered one of the Budapest’s major landmarks, spanning the Danube between Buda and Pest.

I also wandered around the grounds of the neo-classical Gresham Palace, built in 1906 under the ownership of the UK based Gresham Life Assurance Company. At that time the property housed the company’s offices and played host to visiting British dignitaries. During WWII Soviet soldiers resided in the palace and the building was neglected and fell into disrepair. In 2001 Four Seasons Hotels purchased the property and it is now a luxurious, elegant and exquisitely furnished hotel and quite simply the perfect place to stay and, as expected, the highest category of comfort and service are provided. Splash out and stay in the spacious Royal Suite, which covers 136 square metres and features a king sized bed swathed in cool, crisp, white linens and plump pillows, ensuring a deep and restful slumber. Reflecting an ArtDeco style with original Art Nouveau pieces this is hotel accommodation at its very best and the private balcony overlooking the glittering waters of the Danube is the ideal spot for an evening tipple or two prior to dining. KOLLÁZS, the hotel’s vibrant bar and brasserie offers a wide variety of enticing dishes including a succulent, spicy octopus and seared scallop, served with potato paprikash gratin and Hungarian sausage, and the Baked Alaska with white peach parfait and almond dacquoise is the stuff of dreams!

For those keen to venture further afield, consider Gundel, which is widely recognized as Hungary’s most celebrated dining establishment. Opened in 1894, the property was renovated in the 1990’s by Hungarian/American restaurateur George Lang. The restaurant is located within City Park and features a beautiful Art Nouveau bar and a spacious and luxurious dining room with Hungarian works of art prominently displayed. Entertainment includes a Gypsy band, which is guaranteed to get diners tapping their toes. Be sure to make your reservation well in advance.

For those with an appetite for culture and history, seeking a relaxing weekend break and the opportunity to explore a captivating city Budapest ticks all the boxes.

A WEEKEND IN PARIS

As a very special Christmas present, friends Wes and Pete gifted Nick and Royston an unforgettable winter weekend in ‘Gay Paris’!

Travelling first class on the Eurostar, the journey began in style with a delicious lunch, champagne and fine wine.

Staying at the fabulous Le Cinq Codet Hotel, this stunning city offered them grandeur and sophistication with world-class restaurants, luxury shopping and the hottest nightlife.

The first evening was at the super-chic restaurant, Girafe. Boasting a killer seafood selection, the stunning ‘hushed décor’ interior with its outside terrace, gave the perfect outlook to the Eiffel Tower.

Kong Bar and Restaurant was next on the weekend agenda. Perched above the Parisian rooftops, with views of the Seine and the Pont Neuf, this offered a fusion of French elegance and Japanese exoticism.

The weekend was incredible, filled with fun, laughter and surrounded by beautiful people and fabulous places. Thank you.

CLAIRE CAUDWELL’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

healthy you!

Taking good care of your mouth, teeth and gums is important for obvious reasons. Good oral care will help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease and enable you to keep your teeth as you get older.

In addition, research now is showing that a healthy mouth may help prevent medical disorders and on the flip side an unhealthy mouth can increase your risk of a heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

Bacteria from your mouth does not usually enter your blood stream. However, if you have gum disease, even routine brushing can allow bugs to enter your blood stream. This isn’t usually a problem if you have a healthy immune system. If your immune system is compromised though, this can lead to serious infections elsewhere in the body.

This relationship between your oral health and overall health gives you even more reasons to have a regular dental check-up and clean.

The practice is purpose built, modern and boasts the latest in dental technology enabling us to provide you with a modern dental experience. Our aim is to provide private, affordable, up to date, high quality treatments for our patients in a relaxed, comfortable yet professional environment. Accepting new patients now! navigating the night: combatting glare for safer driving

As we embark on our daily journeys, the safety of our roads is always a concern, especially during the dark hours. One issue that we regularly hear patients complain of here at Flint Optometry is the disruptive and potentially dangerous effects of glare when driving in poor light conditions. It is crucial to understand the various causes, and more importantly, explore solutions for a safer driving experience.

Glare can be attributed to several factors, such as the following:

• Cataract is the clouding of your eye’s lens. As the lens becomes opaque with time, this can make it harder to see clearly.

• Uncorrected refractive error refers to not wearing spectacles when you would benefit from them. If you have myopia (short sightedness) you will struggle to see distant objects clearly. Astigmatism is a second type of refractive error that can cause difficulties with glare. Astigmatism occurs when the front surface (cornea) of the eye or the lens inside the eye has mismatched curves, causing blurred vision at all distances. For those driving with uncorrected astigmatism, in low light levels the blurred vision can become worse.

• Dirty spectacles or windscreen can also contribute to glare from headlights and streetlights.

Fortunately, some of the above reasons are easily resolved. But for those still seeking a solution, advancements in eyewear technology may provide the answer. En Route lenses by lens manufacturer HOYA are crafted to reduce glare and increase brightness. This results in a much more comfortable and safe driving experience. For professional drivers or those that spend prolonged periods of time behind the wheel, HOYA have also developed the En Route Pro lens. It offers all the benefits of Enroute and adds a contrast enhancing filter and a lens design that is further optimised for the

viewing distance to the dashboard and mirrors. It also worth noting that both lens types are available as a varifocal, for increased flexibility.

HOYA state ‘ HOYA Consultation data shows the driving is one of the most important activities in our daily lives(1). 90% of a driver’s reaction time depends on vision. Impaired vision means a slower reaction time, creating a dangerous situation in the blink of an eye without the correct eyewear (2) (3).’

In summary, the key features offered by EnRoute lenses are as follows:

• Glare filter - Significant reduction of reflections and uncomfortable glare from oncoming traffic.

• EnRoute dedicated progressive lens - Featuring Integrated Double Surface Technology and Balanced View Control for stable image perception.

• Contrast enhancing filter - Improves contrast and colour perception and offers next level glare reduction. *Available on EnRoute Pro only.

During your eye examination at Flint Optometry, potential reasons for your difficulties will be discussed, and your suitability for the En Route lenses will be assessed. We want to prioritise your safety, whilst embracing innovation. Take control of your journeys by booking an appointment.

free wills month!

Kenneth Jones solicitors has the pleasure of confirming that it is working with Free Wills Month in March 2023 in the Wolverhampton area.

Free Wills Month helps raise funds for a group of national charities via legacies in individual Wills. The charities supported include Age UK, Breast Cancer Now, British Heart Foundation, Guide Dogs, Marie Curie, Mencap, National Trust, NSPCC, Royal Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), The Royal British Legion, Stroke Association and Versus Arthritis.

If you or your partner are aged over 55 you could qualify for a free simple Will or mirror Wills for couples. The campaign runs between 1st March to 28thMarch 2023 and is subject to availability as numbers are limited.

We can provide additional services for Trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney but these are at an additional cost and not covered by the Free Will Month campaign.

What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document in which a person (Testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.

What is Trust?

A trust is a legal arrangement for holding and managing your assets.

This can be a useful way to ensure that assets are retained in the family, particularly when the beneficiary is under the age of 18, vulnerable or cannot handle their own affairs. Trusts have their own specific tax implications which should be explored at the outset.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney

A lasting power of attorney allows your appointed attorney(s) to make decision about your financial affairs or health and care. You can restrict the decisions your attorney can make and state that the lasting power of attorney only comes into force if you lose mental capacity.

This can give you peace of mind to know that your attorney will make sure that your financial affairs and health and care needs are met in the event that you lose mental capacity.

For a no obligation discussion, please feel free to call Kenneth Jones on 01902 745772 or email gavin@kenneth-jones.co.uk.

what future retirement are you shooting for?

Retirement - a time of life that many of us look forward to with anticipation and, sometimes, a bit of anxiety. It’s the chapter where the hustle and bustle of a working life transitions into a period of rest, relaxation, and personal fulfilment. But what does your dream retirement look like?

Are you aiming for a basic, free-spirited, or luxury retirement?

Let’s explore these three types of retirement lifestyles and the financial planning disciplines required to achieve them:

Planning. Perseverance. Patience.

1. The Basic Retirement: Simplicity and Contentment

Basic retirement is characterized by a simpler, more laid-back lifestyle. It’s about finding contentment in the quieter moments of life. This type of retirement doesn’t involve lavish holidays or frequent dining out. Instead, it focuses on living within a limited budget, enjoying the comfort of home, and engaging in low-cost or free activities like gardening, reading, or spending time with family and friends.

Financial Planning for Basic Retirement:

Planning: Establish a budget that covers your basic

needs, including housing, utilities, groceries, and healthcare. Consider downsizing to reduce living expenses.

Perseverance: Stick to your budget and avoid unnecessary expenses. Continuously look for ways to minimize costs without compromising on the quality of life.

Patience: Understand that living a simpler life means sacrificing some luxuries but also appreciate the peace and satisfaction that comes with it.

2. The Free-Spirited Retirement: Adventure on the Road

If you’ve always dreamed of exploring without being tied down, the free-spirited retirement is for you. Think of buying a motorhome or caravan and hitting the road. This retirement style is about discovering new places, meeting different people, and experiencing life on the move. Whether it’s touring your own country or venturing to other European countries, the free-spirited retirement is all about freedom and adventure.

Financial Planning for Free-Spirited Retirement:

Planning: Save for a reliable motorhome or caravan and plan your travel routes and destinations. Budget for fuel, maintenance, campsite fees, and occasional treats.

60 finance

Perseverance: Continuously manage your finances to sustain your nomadic lifestyle. Be prepared for unexpected expenses and have a contingency plan.

Patience: Embrace the unpredictable nature of life on the road. Enjoy the journey as much as the destinations and be open to changing plans as needed.

3. The Luxury Retirement: Indulgence yourself:

For those who dream of a retirement filled with luxury, turning left on the plane is just the beginning. Luxury retirement means traveling to exotic destinations, staying in upscale accommodations, and indulging in gourmet dining and premium experiences. It’s about enjoying the finer things in life and having the financial freedom to do so.

Financial Planning for Luxury Retirement:

Planning: Build a substantial retirement fund that can support a high-end lifestyle. Invest in diverse financial investments and consider hiring a financial adviser.

Perseverance: Continuously grow your wealth and make smart investment choices. Be disciplined in your saving and investing habits throughout your working years.

Patience: Understand that accumulating the necessary wealth for a luxury retirement takes time. Stay focused

on your long-term goals and don’t get discouraged by short-term market fluctuations.

Whatever your retirement dream is, achieving it requires thoughtful financial planning, steadfast perseverance, and an abundance of patience. Whether you aspire for a basic, free-spirited, or luxury retirement, the key is to start planning early, stick to your financial goals, and patiently work towards making your retirement dreams a reality.

Remember, the quality of your retirement life is largely influenced by the choices and efforts you make today.

We all have to ask ourselves, what future retirement are we shooting for?

The value of your investments can go down and up in value. Capital at risk.

first stop wolverhampton

First Stop Wolverhampton has over 20 years of experience in tyre fitting and car repair services.

If First Stop Wolverhampton said that an all-season tyre was the most important purchase anyone could make right now then some people might raise an eyebrow, but the difference between these products and a typical summer tyre really are like night and day.

An all-season tyre offers a balance of capabilities, providing great performance in wet and dry conditions, particularly when temperatures drop below 7 degrees. They have tread depths and rubber compounds that are engineered to provide longer tread life than summer tyres and are capable of providing superior grip in the colder months.

In other words, they are a fashionable choice for this time of year and a product that First Stop Wolverhampton recommends highly. What’s more, there is no need to change back to a summer tyre in the months ahead, as an all-season tyre does exactly what it says, performing all year round.

Not only does First Stop Wolverhampton stock the very best

performing all-season products, but the team is also offering free tyre checks to all motorists as the temperatures begin to cool, to ensure all customers are as safe as possible as the nights begin to draw in.

First Stop Wolverhampton owner Simon Bennett said: “We feel that a balance can be struck where families can drive safely in all road conditions in the UK without breaking the bank, and all-season tyres strikes that perfect balance for many motorists.”

First Stop Wolverhampton, situated in Chapel Ash, offers the full range of automotive services including MOTs, servicing, batteries, wheel balancing, brakes and all other mechanical repairs. Its wheel alignment equipment also makes it one of the most technologically advanced garages in the city.

And it goes without saying that its range of tyres is amongst the most comprehensive in Wolverhampton, with a wide range of products readily available to suit the driving styles and budgets of all motorists.

Winter

First Stop Wolverhampton has over 20 years of experience in tyre fitting and car repair services.

nissan ariya

If you have succumbed and want to buy a pure electric vehicle, the Nissan Ariya should be high on your list, it is the second vehicle in the Nissan stable after the Leaf, as pure electric, writes

Bob Hickman.

It is very, very easy on the eye, in fact I think it is quite an outstanding vehicle, with the sloping roof line, very snazzy rear lights at the back and with the contrasting roof colour it looks outstandingly stylish and more importantly different from all the other plethora of SUV vehicles in the marketplace.

It is not just the exterior that ticks all the boxes, the interior is superbly stylish from the dashboard, the large displays, the suede and leather trims, plus the ambient lighting all help to make this a quality product from Nissan.

From a driving perspective the Ariya provides a really capable balance, in and around town it was positive, change the mode of drive and the vehicle itself adapted to Sport, Economy or Normal mode and you could feel instantly the steering change and the response to the throttle. An electric vehicle is linear in performance and a mere changing of various options changes it dramatically.

Passenger space in the Ariya is on the good side, driver and passenger have adequate room and rear passengers have excellent amount knee room.

Whilst we mention the driving dynamics the Ariya on test had a 63-kWh battery, this gives excellent performance with acceleration of 0-60 in marginally over 7 seconds and a top speed potentially of 100mph.The range is claimed to be 250miles, sadly I could never achieve this and 200 was best that came up on the screen.

You can charge with a 130kW charger (if you can find one) which is pretty impressive and should allow the battery to be topped up to 80% in marginally over 35 minutes. Where the problem arises is if you are going to utilise your home 13-amp socket It took 4.25 hours to put in a 17% charge equivalent to 42 miles, this worked out at 11 units of electricity marginally over £3.50 in cost. The time scale is the issue with all electric vehicles, plug in to the mains and you could be looking at anything up to 20 hours to fully recharge the vehicle. If you had a 7-kilowatt home charger it will take up to 14 hours to go to 100%.

Without doubt driving the Ariya is relaxing, there was very little road or wind noise despite the huge wheels and tyres.

It is and around town where most of the EV’s score, light steering, easy to manoeuvre, and acceleration that was very impressive. There was a bit of a blind spot over the shoulder, but the camera-based system and also the parking sensors, help negate this issue.

What I did like with the Aria was the “E pedal”, this is a degenerative braking of the electric motor slow to the car down, take your foot of the throttle pedal and the vehicle slows itself down, there were many occasions that I never needed to touch the brakes whatsoever.

I think Nissan have pulled out all the stops with the new Ariya, the cabin itself is marvellous and it is completely in keeping with external look of the vehicle. Externally it looks delightfully different, and when you open the doors and enter in to the cabin you are cocooned in a wonderful lovely place and the soft touchy materials everywhere, the suede covering on the dashboard, all add to the ambience and quality feel of the vehicle.

Of course, this equipment and technology doesn’t come cheap, the Ariya as tested, which included a wonderful sunroof had an the on the road price at £46,365. A hefty price for the vehicle, but then again EV vehicles do seem to be at least £10,000 more than their comparable internal combustion engines.

honda zr-v

Honda already have 2 vehicles in the SUV category, but they have decided to enter a third in to this very competitive category the ZR-V. It sits between the somewhat smaller HR-V and the larger CR-V, so they are really covering all the options, writes Bob Hickman.

Honda have now really capitalised on the hybrid system, the ZR-V is only available with a 2-litre petrol engine. This is pared to a CVT automatic transmission and it develops 184bhp, sufficient to give a 0-60 gallop in just under 8 seconds and a top speed for those interested of 108mph. It being a hybrid the combined CO2 figures is on the low side at 131, of course where this type of vehicle scores heavily is on fuel consumption and after a week in company with the vehicle, I managed to achieve 49.8mpg which for a vehicle of this size, I think is wonderful and commendable.

The vehicle is one that will adequately transport 5 adults although I suppose it is better 2 adults in the front and 2 children in the rear. There is quite a decent amount of space, although 6 footers like myself will probably struggle for headroom although the kneeroom is very good. Boot capacity is not over generous with the 380 litres but it has a great shape.

What I like about Honda’s hybrid system is the electric motor which works in conjunction with the petrol engine, and it does a lot of hard work. You never ever know when it swops between electric power and petrol, such is the smoothness, just a little green symbol on the dashboard indicates that it is in EV mode.

The suspension was good and in and around twisty B roads it handled as a SUV should do, it is never going to be a sports car in performance but it certainly did not give any concerns with any degree of rock and roll. In the green mode the electric motor really is a bonus, it has super smooth linear acceleration and it has to be experienced to be appreciated.

From the driving perspective there are large windows all around, so the driving visibility is excellent. The A pillars at the front are on the small side to enhance visibility, I love, there is a rear facing camera which aids parking, in addition there are also front and rear sensors.

On the motorway the ZR-V was a quiet companion to be cocooned within, there was very little noise percolating back from the tyres or wind noise. The actual cabin of the vehicle, as previously mentioned, has plenty of room for the driver and passenger and a generous level of adjustment to the seats. If you choose the Sport or Avant,

you get the benefit of electric seat adjustments, again a bonus feature but one most people can manage without. If you carry a lot of equipment water bottles and bits and pieces, the door pockets are of a generous size and the cup holders t in the front are reasonably large enough that the relevant cups or bottles can be contained. The interior itself is quite simplistic and easy to understand, Honda have used synthetic leather in and around the dashboard and on other areas and all in all the interior of the cabin was pleasant. Climate control, is contained within the 9” infotainment screen, which was easy to use and also simple, it is nice to know that there are still a lot of equipment that is controlled from the steering wheel. I am not a lover of most of the controls features from the infotainment screen in the centre of the dashboard I think it detracts and is a potential safety hazard. If you have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto then the ZR-V ticks the boxes and you are able to connect to it.

As standard the ZR-V comes with a 3-year or 90,000 miles warranty and you can dip in to your pocket and pay to increase the guarantee if you so wish, and it also does include Roadside Assistance.

My particulars ZR-V Sport model had a on the road price of £41,745, this did include a £650 premium for the Radiant Red metallic paintwork.
