WARM COLOURS

Warm, earthy tones for winter 2024, such as terracotta, deep olive, rust and warm browns are trending. These colours bring warmth to your space, creating a grounded and cosy atmosphere.

TEXTURE

Textures add depth and warmth to any room. Think thick knitted throws, velvet pillows, faux fur accents and wool rugs. Layering different textures creates a rich, inviting feel that’s perfect for the colder months.

STATEMENT LIGHTING

MAXIMALISM

2024 embraces maximalism. Layer patterns, bold prints and vibrant colours in your decor, especially in artwork, pillows, and rugs. Mix and match for an eclectic but curated look.

COSY CORNERS

Create small, intimate spaces for relaxation, such as a reading nook. Use soft, plush seating with plenty of cushions, layered blankets and a side table for books or warm beverages. Add a lamp or string lights to complete the snug feel.

ECO FRIENDLY

Sustainability continues to be a major focus. Opt for eco-friendly materials, second-hand furniture or upcycled decor. Natural fibres like wool, cotton and linen are perfect for this trend.

MUTED METALLIC

WINTER FLORAL

Indoor plants are essential for refreshing the home in winter. Consider low-maintenance plants like snake plants or seasonal greenery like holly or pine.

Also consider a mixture of real and faux flowers. I have created this stunning burgundy arrangement with an on-trend stone vase (see image). I am selling these to my clients and are made to order so please contact Jennifer for more information on faux flower arrangements.

Instead of bright, shiny metals, winter 2024 calls for muted metallics; brushed brass, antique gold are examples. Incorporate them through decor items like candleholders, frames or mirrors to add a touch of elegance.

2024 FESTIVE READY!

Create a festive and inviting Christmas atmosphere in 2024, ranging from cosy and understated to bold and glamorous. Whether you’re leaning towards sustainability or embracing nostalgia, there’s a trend to fit every taste.

Taking inspiration from the great outdoors, botanical motifs such as leaves, pine cones and berries can be used in seasonal holiday décor. Evergreen branches, eucalyptus wreaths and organic centrepieces, create an inviting and natural atmosphere by blending indoor-outdoor living for a more earthy holiday season.

Natural materials like wood, linen and recycled paper will dominate. Reusable or homemade decorations such as fabric garlands, dried flowers and sustainable gift wraps, add a personal touch.

Decorations will be pared back but still impactful, focusing on a few well-placed, quality pieces such as minimalist wreaths, candles or a simple tree adorned with lights and a handful of standout ornaments. The cosy hygge-inspired Christmas remains popular. Candlelight, knitted blankets and wooden decorations, add an emphasis on cosiness and comfort. White and light woods, simple wreaths and soft lighting will dominate, creating a serene and peaceful environment for winter celebrations.

seasonal dangers and delights for pets

As the evenings get darker and the days get colder many of us look forward to Christmas and all the beautiful decorations and yummy festive treats. Our pets love to join in the fun too, but there are hidden dangers that you may not be aware of.

Seasonal foliage such as Mistletoe, Poinsettia and Ivy are all toxic to dogs, cats and other pets such as rabbits. Holly in particular can cause severe gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs and Lilies can be fatal to cats, even if just a small amount is ingested it can cause severe kidney failure, so ensure Lilies are well out of reach as pets may also be tempted to drink water from the vase. If you have a pet bird keep a close eye on them when they are flying about near your decorations, Ivy and Mistletoe can be deadly to pet birds and many other decorative plants such as Poinsettia can be toxic too.

Out and about, check cars before you start them as cats like to climb inside a car engine to keep warm. If you have a cat you may like to pop a litter tray down for them, they may prefer to stay indoors on particularly cold days. If you have more than one cat, put more than one litter tray down. Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs and cats, they will be tempted to lick it as it’s so sweet, just a tiny bit can kill so it needs to be kept well out of reach and take care not to spill any.

It’s great to share the tasty treats with our furry friends but take care that you know what’s in those treats. Chocolate is toxic for dogs and Christmas pudding

contains sultanas, raisins and currants which are toxic too, so mince pies and Christmas pud are off the menu for our precious pooches. You could always try making a dog friendly mince pie with real meat and carrots, why not add some sweet potato too and come up with a fun festive name for them. There are loads of homemade treat ideas online for cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, parrots and other species of pets too, why not take a look and make them some special seasonal delights of their own.

Wildlife will start to struggle more as the winter months approach, why not help by putting some food out for them. As well as wild bird seed and nuts from the pet shop, you could pop out some kitchen scraps such as cooked peas, cooked unsalted bacon and beef fat, apples and pears and cooked eggs. Ensure you chop the scraps up in to small pieces or crush them and leave fresh water out for the birds too. Birds puff out their feathers to stay warm so please don’t mistake this for a fat bird, it could well be the complete opposite and they may really need those yummy scraps.

Have a fabulous festive season and keep each other safe and snuggly!!!

Always contact your veterinary surgeon if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

turkey leg ballotine with tuscan

sausage, boozy craneberries and sage

INGREDIENTS:

1 large turkey drumstick (boned)

200g of tuscan sausage or plain pork and add some garlic powder and crushed fennel seeds

Small bunch of fresh sage

2 banana shallots

50g of dried cranberries

2 litre of water to make stock

1 tsp of maldon sea salt

100ml of brandy

1 carrot peeled and chopped

Bay leaf, thyme, rosemary

EQUIPMENT

Roasting tray

Small saucepans

Sieve

Parchment paper

Foil

Meat hammer

Chopping board

Sharp Knife (boning knife) Mixing bowl

METHOD:

Soak the cranberries in the brandy over night. The next day using a sharp knife (a boning knife if you have one), slit the turkey leg lengthways and carefully remove the bones and tendons without puncturing the skin. Or ask your butcher to bone it for you. Spread the turkey leg out on the chopping board and beat with a meat hammer to even out. Simmer the bones covered in water with the carrot and herbs for about an hour or 2 (Roast the bones first for a darker stock if you wish). Place in the fridge over night.

Remove the sausage meat from the casings and add the extra spice if you can’t get tuscan sausage. Finely dice the shallot or grate and mix into the sausage meat with finely sliced sage leaves. Drain the cranberries and set the brandy aside for later. Mix the cranberries into the sausage mix and then roll the sausage meat up into a sausage shape and lay along the crentre of the leg. Now carefully roll the leg back up in parchement paper making sure the skin is evenly distibuted and then roll again in foil. Place in the fridge over night.

When ready to cook take the leg out of the fridge and allow to come to room temperature for an hour or so and get on with the rest of the lunch prep. Roast the drumstick in the oven for 45 minutes at 200oC and then turn the oven down to 150oC and roast for a further 2.15 hours. Once out of the oven, remove the paper and foil and allow to rest while you prepare the rest of the lunch. If the turkey skin isn’t as crispy as you like it just place it back in the oven uncovered at 200oC until crispening up or pan-fry in clarified butter or ghee. Whilst the turkey is cooking, reheat the turkey stock then strain though a sieve. To get a smoother stock put an egg white in it whilst warm and then strain again, the egg white will pick up all the impurities. Allow the stock to reduce down by half and then in a seperate pan heat the left over brandy for 4 minutes to cook off the alcohol then whisk in 75g of cold butter cubes and then simmer to thicken up, if you need it thicker just add some potato starch or gravy granules.

Once the turkey is cooked allow to rest for 30 minutes and then slice as thick or thinly as you like and serve with the rest of your lunch.

roasted sprouts and red onion

caramelised with sherry vinegar and brown sugar

INGREDIENTS:

800g of sprouts

1 large red onion

2 tbsp of light brown sugar

2 tbsp of sherry vinegar

1 tbsp of Olive oil or dripping 200ml of turkey stock

30g butter

EQUIPMENT

Roasting dish Skillet

Chopping board Sharp Knife

METHOD:

This is quite a simple and quick dish to prepare so you can do this whilst your turkey is cooking.

Chop the end of the sprouts off and let the outer leaves fall off and pick any other leaves off that you dont like the look of. Peel and chop the red onion into thin wedges then toss in with the sprouts and olive oil or dripping. Roast in the oven on 180oC for about 15 minmutes or until softening. The sprouts and onion want to start browning a bit.

Warm your skillet or frying pan on the stove and then add the sherry vinegar and brown sugar heating until the sugar dissolves. Add the sprouts and onion and toss to coat in the sugar and vinegar then add the turkey stock in and simmer until the sauce has reduced. Finish with a nob of butter and keep warm to serve with your lunch.

48 hours in hamburg

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city after Berlin, offers a fascinating glimpse into what was once a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire and a member of the medieval Hanseatic League; a defensive and commercial network of merchant guilds and market towns throughout Northern and Central Europe.

At the apex of the Jutland Peninsula, Hamburg is located on the River Elbe at the head of estuary to the North Sea and at the mouth of the Alster and Bille. A sheltered natural harbour, the Port of Hamburg is Germany’s largest and there is much to explore including the Speicherstadt, the largest warehouse district in the world, which was originally built for the transfer of goods and to avoid taxes. The area features buildings with timberpile foundations and oak logs, built between 1883 and 1927 and was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2015 alongside the adjacent Kontorhaus District, which is characterised by office buildings in the Brick Expressionism of the 1920’s.

Hamburg is a major tourism destination and for those of us who love to explore meandering waterways, the city’s canals and rivers are crossed by more than 2,500 bridges. I headed post haste for St Michael’s, a baroque masterpiece located at Englische Planke. This Lutheran church was originally built during the 17th century but

repeatedly destroyed by fire and rebuilt twice with preservation works completed at the beginning of the 20th century. For hardy souls, the church features a viewing platform at the top of its copper covered spire, which is 132 metres in height and offers a panoramic view over the city. There are 452 steps leading to the platform and I must confess that I took the lift after the first 52 steps and I was richly rewarded with a view of the historic Speicherstadt and Europe’s largest modern inner-city urban development, known as HafenCity, which is beside the Elbe. HafenCity’s main landmark, the glassy construction of Elbphilharmonie concert hall, which rests on the top of an old brick warehouse, is simply stunning and the overall experience of gazing upon the city’s skyline is unforgettable.

Back down at ground level I entered the main entrance beneath a fabulous statue of the Archangel Michael conquering Satan. St Michael’s gold and white interior where the composer Johannes Brahms was baptised in May 1833, is simply magnificent, and the crypt is surely a fitting resting place for two of Germany’s great composers; Johann Mattheson who was born in Hamburg in 1681 and died in 1764 and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach who died in 1788.

Following my explorations I was feeling a trifle weary and headed for the Fraser Suites, a rather splendid property located on Rödingsmarkt, which is only a ten minute walk from St Michael’s. After a swift and efficient check-in my suitcase was whisked away and I was escorted to my one bedroom premier suite covering 41-

48 sqm. The separate living, dining and bedroom areas feature contemporary furnishings and I made full use of the fully-equipped integrated kitchenette, which includes a Nespresso coffee machine and whilst sipping on a piping hot espresso I flipped through the channels on the Smart TV. Hotel facilities include a fitness centre and a rather lovely sauna and there is also a laundry suite with plenty of washers and dryers and a comfy couch, which was the perfect spot for me scroll through my emails whilst waiting for my clothes to dry.

Back out on the city streets I made my way to the Rathaus, located on Market Square in the centre of Hamburg’s Old Town. Completed in 1897, the Neo-Renaissance city hall is a magnificent sight. The sandstone property is exquisitely decorated and features a wide façade with statues of emperors. The copper roof is green as a result of water and carbon dioxide, the soaring tower reaches a height of 367 feet and the balcony features a mosaic of Hammonia; Hamburg’s patron goddess, the city’s motto and coat of arms.

Another of Hamburg’s attractions is the Kunsthalle; a museum consisting of three connected landmark buildings where exhibits include works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Canaletto and more. For those seeking contemporary art there is much to explore including Picasso, Bacon, Klee, Munch and Andy Warhol. I must

confess that I spent quite some time wandering around and examining many of the masterpieces but alas, with time constraints I had to tear myself away and hail a taxi, heading for the Reeperbahn.

And for music lovers, especially for those of us who consider The Beatles to be the greatest rock n’ roll band and absolutely in a league of their own, strolling around the Beatles-Platz, located at the junction of Große Freiheit and Reeperbahn is such a thrill. The homage to the band, which arrived in Hamburg in August 1960 and performed in a number of venues over two years, is designed to resemble a vinyl LP. Beatles-Platz features contemporary sculptures of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and past member Sutcliffe and a fusion of Ringo Starr and Pete Best. The titles of around seventy of their songs are etched into the grooves between granite slabs and at the rim of the disc, four flashing lights creates the illusion of a rotating turntable. I was absolutely mesmerised.

Hamburg offers all this and more and I do hope that I get the opportunity to return and to explore more of this fascinating city.

nick & royston

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES

Nick and Royston’s summer has been nothing short of spectacular; filled with unforgettable moments and fabulous company. Recently, we had the pleasure of catching up with the dynamic duo in their beloved Bridgnorth to hear all about their summer of fun.

JULIE & ROY’S RETIREMENT CELEBRATIONS

The summer kicked off with a grand celebration with close friends, Julie & Roy, joining Nick & Royston in their exclusive retirement club. To mark the occasion, Roy & Julie treated their dearest friends to a seven-day ultra-luxury cruise on the latest 6-star liner Silver Ray.

Joining the gang, at the renowned Hotel Cipriani, Venice, overlooking St Marks Square, this haven of serenity was a stunning location to start the adventure. After a few days of partying & shopping, the party joined the ship. Escorted to their lavish suites for a glass of bubbly, they were welcomed by a team of butlers dedicated to ensuring happiness was guaranteed. Enjoying the spectacular views on the open-air Dusk Bar, relaxing in the award-winning spa and the spectacular fine dining experience, life on board was epitome of luxury. The destinations visited included the delights of Croatia and Italy returning to Venice for the climax of the trip.

A huge Thank You, Julie & Roy for an unforgettable journey!

FLUFFY PARTY

Nick and Royston didn’t slow down after their cruise as they next attended the much-anticipated Fluffy Party. Close friend Mitch Wilson, known for his successful ventures such as The Light Bar and The Canal Club, returned to Wolverhampton after 20 years in Ibiza to host a reunion party.

Held at The Medicine Crown Joules, the event brought together friends old and new. A star-studded DJ line up, including John Kelly, kept the partygoers on their feet all night long. The reunion was a roaring success, and the first Fluffy Party is sure to be remembered for years to come.

MANCHESTER GAY PRIDE

ESTELLE MANOR

The latest exclusive country destination and private members club is Estelle Manor. This landmark hotel set in 85 acres in Oxfordshire, surrounded by 3000 acres of parkland and gardens, is a favourite haunt for celebrities.

Nick and Royston were invited to the Summer Members Party by their friend, James Hearle. The event embraced a glamorous 1980s Miami vibe, with elegant guests mingling over delicious canapés and cocktails. The highlight of the night was none other than Pete Tong, who set the tone with his incredible DJ set. The dazzling setting and electrifying atmosphere made it an unforgettable night for Nick and Royston.

No summer would be complete without Manchester Gay Pride, a highlight of the season. A three-day sensation in the Canal Street area, the parade through the streets brought the city to a halt and the party atmosphere was infectious. With a host of stars entertaining throughout the weekend including Jessie J and Rita Ora, it attracted thousands of visitors, all ready to celebrate.

It was a fabulous surprise to spot Katie Price, and her daughter Princess, enjoying the party. Close friends and a regular client for many years, Katie always requested the boys to style her on special occasions and events, including her wedding. Having not caught up for a while, Katie looked fabulous, and Princess all grown up. It was wonderful to catch up with plenty of laughter and memories.

the connection between eye health and general wellness

When people think about the purpose of an eye examination, they often assume that it is to check the required strength of their glasses or contact lenses. Whilst this makes up part of an eye exam, your eyes can reveal much more about your general health than you might expect. The link between your eye health and general health is distinct and often overlooked.

During a comprehensive eye exam at Flint Optometry, one of our Optometrists will assess the condition of your eye’s internal structures. Health issues that may have no symptoms in their early stages can be detected, such as hypertension, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions.

• “Background” diabetic retinopathy: few dot hemorrhages (blue arrows) (Dr. Ana Dascalu’s private collection, Emergency University Hospital Bucharest, Ophthalmology Department).High blood pressure can cause changes to the blood vessels in the eyes, known as hypertensive retinopathy. Some of the earliest eye signs of hypertension include your blood vessels appearing more tortuous than usual, or a small artery (arteriole) is seen crossing a small vein (venule), which results in the compression of the vein with bulging on either side of the crossing.

• Diabetes and eye health is closely linked. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, which occurs when persistently high blood sugar levels

damage the small blood vessels at the back of your eyes. Your Optometrist may detect small bleeds at the back of your eye (as shown by the blue arrows in the photo), even if you haven’t noticed any change in your vision.

• Autoimmune conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis can lead to iritis, which is the inflammation of the iris (the coloured ring around your eye’s pupil). Symptoms may include redness, light sensitivity and marked discomfort. In many cases, inflammation can first present in the eye before individuals are aware they have an autoimmune condition.

In short, regular eye exams at Flint Optometry are not just about maintaining good vision; they’re also an essential part of your overall health routine, offering an early warning system for many serious conditions. By taking care of your eyes, you’re also taking care of your overall well-being.

hear better this winter – can assisted listening devices help?

Winter should be a season to enjoy, not to feel isolated due to hearing difficulties. Assisted listening devices (ALD’s) offer a range of solutions to help you hear better, whether it’s to enjoy a walk outdoors, a lively party, or watching a cosy film at home, you can continue to stay engaged and make the most of the festive season.

Don’t let hearing challenges hold you back. Embrace the power of ALD’s and hear better than ever this winter.

How Winter Conditions Affect Hearing

Winter can impact hearing in a few ways. Hats, scarves, and earmuffs can muffle sounds or interfere with the operation of hearing aids. Soft sounds are lost in snow, ice and noisy winds.

It’s a busy time from family gatherings to festive dinners. Group conversations, background music, and clinking dishes can be overwhelming if you struggle to hear, often leading to feelings of isolation or frustration.

The Power of Assisted Listening Devices

ALD’s can really help to hear in challenging environments by offering enhanced sound clarity and better speech recognition.

How can they help?

Many ALDs feature advanced noise reduction to help filter out background noise and enhance speech, making it easier to focus.

1) Directional Microphones

Directional microphones are designed to pick up sound from a specific source while reducing noise from other directions. This can help you engage in conversation in a background noise.

2) Wireless Connectivity

Modern ALD’S often include Bluetooth connectivity,

allowing them to connect directly to smartphones, TVs etc. This help’s when watching tv or chatting with loved ones via phone or facetime. It improves sound quality and reduces background noise without turning the volume up in the room

3) Hearing Aid Companions

Remote mics amplify sound and transmit it directly to your hearing aids, creating a better listening experience in noisy environments and even outdoors where hearing aids are less effective on their own.

Caring for Hearing Devices in the Cold

Take extra care of hearing devices in colder weather. Moisture from snow or rain, or even condensation from moving between cold outdoors and warm indoor spaces, can cause issues. Keep your devices in top shape by:

Staying dry – Most hearing aids are water resistant but very few are waterproof. Dehumidifiers can help to remove any moisture.

Keeping warm - Use earmuffs or a hat to protect both your ears and your devices from extreme cold and wind.

Check batteries - Cold weather can affect battery life, so keep spare batteries on hand if you have battery operated devices

planning your financial future with confidence in an uncertain world: four key areas to focus on

When it comes to securing your financial future and maintaining it through life, there’s a lot to consider— especially in the current economic climate. Whether you’re already thinking ahead or it’s time to put plans in place, being proactive about wealth preservation, sustainable investing, generational wealth planning, and retirement planning can make all the difference.

Here are four essential areas to be thinking about today, to ensure your financial future is as robust as possible, no matter what the future holds.

1. Wealth Preservation in an Era of High Inflation and Rising Interest Rates

In recent years, high inflation has made even the wealthiest households rethink their financial strategies. It’s no longer enough to simply let investments ride; you need to actively manage your wealth to ensure it continues to grow in real terms.

Inflation reduces the purchasing power of your money over time, meaning what could buy you a luxury car today might only cover a mid-range model in the future. On top of that, interest rates have spiked, which can significantly impact anyone holding substantial mortgages or loans. If you’ve got property investments or are paying off mortgages, you’re likely feeling this pinch already.

Consider rethinking your mortgage strategy—whether by locking in a fixed rate for long-term predictability or looking at refinancing options—could provide immediate relief in managing rising interest costs. Your ultimate objective may be to pay off all debt entirely and

not have the anxiety of having a mortgage to pay each month.

2. Sustainable Investing: A Future-Proof Strategy for Wealth Growth

As more people become conscious of the environmental and social impacts of their investments, sustainable investing is increasingly becoming a go-to strategy for investors. No longer just a buzzword, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing is seen as a way to align financial goals with personal values. And here’s the exciting part—it’s not just good for the planet, it’s good for your portfolio, too. Long term returns in an ESG portfolio compare favourably with other investment options.

Many wealth managers are now making it easier than ever to include ESG factors into your financial plan. So, whether you’re passionate about reducing your carbon footprint or supporting companies with diverse leadership, sustainable investing lets you make a positive impact—without compromising on growth.

3. Generational Wealth Planning: Securing Your Legacy

If you’re part of the growing number of individuals thinking about the future of your wealth, you’ll want to ensure that your legacy is protected. Whether you’re planning to pass wealth on to your children or other loved ones, careful estate planning is critical.

One of the most important aspects of this process is minimising tax liabilities, particularly when it comes to Inheritance Tax. Trusts, for example, can be a highly

effective way to pass on assets while maintaining control over how they are distributed. By placing assets into a trust, you may also be able to reduce exposure to Inheritance Tax and ensure that your wealth passes down your bloodline.

It’s also important to involve the next generation in these discussions early. Not only does this help them prepare for managing a future inheritance, but it also ensures that your financial goals and family values align. Financial education for younger generations is key; the more they understand about money management, the better equipped they’ll be to use it to the best effect and to follow your wishes.

4. Maximising Retirement Income in a Volatile World

Finally, retirement might seem like a distant concern for some, but it’s crucial to plan now—especially in an unpredictable financial environment. Whether you’re already approaching retirement or just beginning to think about it, one of the biggest challenges is ensuring that your retirement income keeps up with inflation and market fluctuations.

Having different retirement income sources is more important than ever. While pensions remain a cornerstone of retirement planning, there may be other options to consider, particularly if you’re accustomed to a high standard of living. A good approach is to simulate retirement using cash flow modelling, which can help you understand the use of both income and capital throughout your retirement years.

You should also consider strategies for tax-efficient income withdrawal. For example, drawing from tax-free accounts, such as ISAs, can help you maximise the use of your money.

As retirement can often last 20 to 30 years, regularly reviewing your financial plan and adjusting it as necessary will ensure you’re not caught off guard in an ever-changing world.

Conclusion

In today’s rapidly changing financial landscape, it’s essential to remain proactive about planning for the future. By focusing on wealth preservation, sustainable investing, estate planning, and smart retirement strategies, you can ensure that your financial future is secure, no matter what challenges arise. Start now, and you’ll be better prepared to navigate whatever comes your way.

Why You Should Write a Last Will and Testament

Writing a last will and testament may not be the most pleasant task, but it’s one of the most important. It’s not just a legal formality; it’s a way to ensure your wishes are followed and your loved ones are protected after you’re gone. Despite its significance, many people delay or avoid writing a will, which can lead to confusion, stress, and even conflict for their families.

Here are key reasons why everyone should have a will:

1. Control Over Asset Distribution

Without a will, the state decides how to distribute your assets, which may not reflect your intentions. A will ensures your estate is divided according to your wishes, so the right people or organizations benefit from your legacy.

2. Protecting Loved Ones

A will reduces the chance of disputes and legal complications for your family. It provides clarity on who should inherit what and, if you have children, allows you to appoint a guardian to care for them.

3. Minimizing Taxes and Legal Fees

A well-crafted will can help reduce estate taxes and legal costs, ensuring more of your estate goes to your beneficiaries rather than to fees or taxes.

4. Peace of Mind

Having a will offers peace of mind for you and your family. It removes uncertainty about your intentions, helping your loved ones avoid unnecessary stress during a time of grief.

5. Adapting to Life Changes

Your will can be updated to reflect major life events, such as marriage, the birth of a child, or changes in financial status, ensuring it remains aligned with your wishes.

Conclusion: A Final Act of Care

Writing a will is more than just a legal process; it’s an act of care for your loved ones. It secures your legacy, reduces the emotional and financial burden on your family, and ensures that your final wishes are respected.

divorce and separating finances

Divorce can be a complex process, particularly when it comes to separating finances. Both parties need to understand their financial rights and responsibilities to achieve a fair settlement.

The first step in the financial separation is to compile a comprehensive list of all assets and liabilities. This includes properties, savings, pensions, investments, and any debts.

Transparency is crucial, as both parties must have a clear understanding of their financial landscape.

Marital assets are typically divided based on principles of fairness, taking into account the length of the marriage, the contributions of each party, and the future needs of any children involved. It is not always a straightforward 50/50 split; the court aims for an equitable distribution.

Pensions are often a significant aspect of financial settlements and can be complex to divide. It is essential to obtain a proper

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS FOR ALMOST 150 YEARS

valuation and understand how they will be addressed in the settlement.

Once an agreement has been reached, it should be recorded in a consent order to prevent any further financial claims being made against each other. This legal document ensures that the terms of the settlement are enforceable.

Ultimately, while divorce can be emotionally taxing, addressing financial aspects with clarity and foresight can facilitate a smoother transition toward a new chapter in life. estate planning

Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.

What is an ‘estate’

Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions. Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later. What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death. Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do.

Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:

- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.

- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.

- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.

- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.

Benefits of a Will

These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will: You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.

Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you

would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.

Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.

Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children.

Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.

Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.

When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts. Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.

Inheritance tax

It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.

The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries.

How much does a Will cost?

This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

toyota yaris gr hybrid

Toyota with the Yaris GR version have introduced yet another wonderful vehicle to their arsenal of vehicles, writes Bob Hickman.

The exterior has sporty looks, in addition it has reasonable fuel economy and drives as well as it looks. The hybrid system is an engineering delight, it can run on power from either the petrol engine or the electric motor, in addition it can run on electric power only.

During my time with the Yaris, it was noticeable that more often than not and especially in and around town the car was determined to drive on electric power only, I managed nearly 500 miles during my time with the Yaris a combination of motorways, A roads and a lot of town driving, the fuel consumption figures according to the on-board system suggested I averaged nearly 50mpg.

I like the dashboard facility that tells you instantly with a little green EV icon that you are running in green electric power. Whilst I concede the Yaris is a small city car the interior space is generous, the driving position I found to be good with a widely adjustable seat and steering wheel. The space in the rear is average and adults may struggle for knee room. The Yaris boot was a revelation, swallowing a large golf bag and a an even bigger electric golf trolley with ease.

that we need to know is the CO2 emissions and they are quoted at 109.Interior layout is fit and flush, a pleasant companion, the controls for the air conditioning are within easy reach and for once they are proper buttons that need to be pushed and turned and not fiddle. Satellite navigation was included, and most of the controls on the large 12.3” central infotainment screen was clear and relatively easy to use and navigate. A reversing camera made the job of parking much easier. The sound system was good, the DAB radio held its position at all times, in addition it re tuned itself to my chosen Smooth radio as I ventured down south, a feature some systems just do not do. All the instrumentation was very clear and easy to understand. The Yaris came complete with a DAB radio, Blue Tooth and USB socket, to charge the phone simply place it on the wireless portion and it does it quickly and without effort.

Out on the road the vehicle was a pleasant companion, on county roads it was surprisingly good and agile, the engine doesn’t get too noisy when pushed and the automatic gearbox always seeming to know where and when to change gear.

The engine for the vehicle was a 1490 cc three-cylinder hybrid producing 129 bhp. with an electric motor fed by a small battery. Toyota suggests that a top speed of 109mph should be possible and a 0-60 gallop in 10.7 seconds. One of the important features

My particular test car on the road was priced at £31,320. and Toyota’s warranty is 3 years or 60,000 miles and servicing is suggested at 10,000 miles or annually whichever comes sooner.

mg3 hybrid trophy

The latest entry from the MG manufacturer is a huge improvement on its predecessor and that is not to say that the first derivative wasn’t a good vehicle, it’s just that the newest one is so much nicer, so much better, writes Bob Hickman.

The biggest factor of all is they have now allied the 1.5-litre petrol engine to a 100-kilowatt electric motor giving a wonderful hybrid vehicle. This system allows the vehicle to run on electric power only when you have sufficient battery power and then the engine will run a generator which charges the batteries, so there is no umbilical cord or no worrying about running out of battery capacity. You have the best of both worlds.

The 4-cylinder engine produces about 102bhp and then you add this to a quite substantial electric motor, and you have an incredibly powerful vehicle.

What was also a feature of the MG3 is the driver can decide on which mode he prefers to have, Intro, Standard or Sport. I always choose Intro because that is what a hybrid and batteries are about maximum economy. However, the vehicle is no slouch in whichever model you prefer.

There are 2 derivatives, an SE or the Trophy being the test vehicle. The prices start at a very reasonable £18,495 on the road and when you add in to this equation MG’s 7-year or 80,000 miles fully transferable warranty, you can understand why more and more people are now looking at the MG Brand.

The MG itself, is not perfect, when you sit in the driver’s seat and grab the steering wheel those of you old enough will have reminiscing memories of the Austin Allegro with its square steering wheel. I found the MG to be a little bit noisy on motorways and noise coming back through the tyres was problematic. Also, for rear passengers, whilst

the vehicle will accommodate 4 adults’ entrance and exit from the rear can be problematic if you have some mobility issues and also what I haven’t seen in years the rear seat back folded forward to give extra boot capacity and it didn’t split so the whole of the rear seats had to be folded which then meant you couldn’t carry any rear passengers.

There is a lot of technology included, primarily to harness the engine and electric motor and batteries to give wonderful smooth effortless performance but also in the cockpit. Drivers have the benefit of a 7” digital infotainment screen in front of them, and a 10.25” infotainment system. All the systems worked quite well, the vehicle does have satellite navigation fitted as standard and a smart phone facility fitted as standard and a smart phone facility so you can connect Apple Play or Android Auto. The model came equipped with air conditioning, a decent 6-speaker audio system which has Blue Tooth and 4 USB ports. I really do like the fact that the vehicle also includes rear parking sensors and a camera and if you do go to the higher specification Trophy then you get leather style upholstery and heated front seats. It goes without saying an awful amount of advance driver assistance systems (ADAS) are incorporated. One feature that did annoy me was the number of electronic beeps, one which sounded like a bird cheeping and I never actually found out what it was. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was advance warning of a speed camera but I never did narrow it down.

During a week in company with the MG3 I drove over 400 miles and averaged about 52mpg, including a lot of motorways driving.

Prices start at £18,495 on the road, the warranty is excellent at 7 years or 80,000 miles.
