window treatments by home Jennifer Suzanne
Window treatments play a pivotal role in defining the aesthetics of a space and what better time than 2024 to infuse your home with the latest in fabric styles.
They not only add a finishing touch to a room but also possess the transformative ability to elevate interiors, whether it’s by creating the illusion of height, drawing focus across a space or framing windows to showcase a beautiful view. Here are my top picks for curtain styles that are set to grace my clients’ homes in 2024.

ORGANIC TEXTURES AND NATURAL FABRICS:
STRIPES:
Stripes are making a stylish comeback in 2024 and what better way to incorporate them than in your window treatments. Thin, vertical stripes elongate windows, creating the illusion of taller ceilings, ideal for smaller rooms. Horizontal stripes, on the other hand, widen the visual space, accentuating the view outside. Their uniform pattern blends seamlessly with diverse decor styles, from contemporary to playful, making them versatile choices.
Embracing nature and drawing inspiration from the great outdoors, this trend is one of my personal favourites for 2024. Earthy, organic textures such as linen, cotton, wool, and silk take centre stage, celebrated for their durability and eco-friendliness. These materials not only appeal visually but also harmonise with the natural elements of a space, imbuing it with a grounded and welcoming feel, especially around windows.
Linen curtains, in particular, are enjoying the spotlight. With its natural elegance and lightweight qualities, linen is perfect for curtains that allow natural light to filter through, creating a warm and inviting ambiance year-round. Soft hues like eggshell white, sandy beige and gentle greige complement various spaces, especially bedrooms and living rooms, exuding laid-back elegance.

CURTAIN-WALL COLOUR MATCHING:
Continuing from previous years, 2024 sees the trend of curtain-wall colour matching persisting. This approach involves selecting curtain fabrics that closely match or complement the wall colour, resulting in a harmonious and unified look. Ideal for minimalist interiors, this sophisticated technique enhances the perceived size of a room, making it feel larger and more open.
SHEER AND LIGHT FABRICS:
Sheer curtains remain a perennial favourite, providing the perfect balance of filtering daylight while maintaining privacy. In 2024, the use of sheer and light fabrics continues to trend, imparting a cool and airy ambiance wherever they’re used. These curtains diffuse light, adding spaciousness to rooms without darkening them, creating a delicate and romantic atmosphere, particularly in bedrooms and living rooms.
LAYERED WINDOW TREATMENTS:
Layering curtains remains an enduring trend in 2024, offering both functionality and style. This design approach involves combining multiple types of window coverings, such as sheer curtains and thicker drapes, to control light and privacy levels effectively. Layering adds texture and interest to a room, providing ample opportunity for creative expression with a mix of patterns, textures, and colours to suit any interior theme.

LATEST COLOURS IN CURTAIN DESIGN:
The latest colour trends in curtain design strike a balance between tranquility and vibrancy. Organic shades dominate, evoking a sense of peace and connection with nature. However, bold hues such as deep blues, rich greens, and vibrant pinks are emerging as focal points, injecting energy and vitality into spaces. These colours are often paired with neutral wall tones to achieve a harmonious blend of excitement and calm.
TRIMMINGS
Tassels, fringing and border trims have been, quite literally, edging their way back into interiors for the past couple of years. I love to add pretty patterned trims down the edges of curtains and blinds, and it’s a great way of putting more detail and layers to any room.
Adding piping, fringing on cushions and throws or adding colourful pom poms to the edge of roman blinds, may be a small detail, but it can help to bring a new, fresh feel to your home for 2024.

keep your bunny bouncing towards summer
Were almost at the turn of the season once again and it’s an ideal time to make sure your beloved bunny is fit, healthy and ready to bounce in to Summer.
Flystrike can be a problem for rabbits in the warmer weather, many flies are harmless but some, such as the bluebottle will lay their eggs on poor bunnies’ fur. When the eggs hatch the maggots begin to eat the rabbit’s flesh and sadly this can cause shock and death in a very short amount of time.
Flies are particularly attracted to soiled or damp fir around bunny’s bottom. It is good practice to check your rabbit daily throughout the year anyway, but especially in the warmer weather to ensure that they are clean and healthy. Pay particular attention to their behind, keep this area well groomed, clean and dry which will help minimise the risk of Flystrike and ensure that any issues are dealt with immediately. Should you notice any problems, ensure that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.
Rabbits teeth continuously grow throughout their lifetime, so it is vital that your rabbit is given the correct diet to ensure good dental health. Hay and grass are very important for a rabbit and should account for at least 80% of their diet, fresh hay should be available to them at all times. Good quality hay from a variety of sources is essential, as well as keeping the teeth healthy it also helps prevent boredom, keeps the jaw strong and maintains a healthy gut.
Dandelion have a lot of health benefits as they are high
in fiber, antioxidants and a good source of minerals as well as vitamins. Rabbits absolutely love Dandelions and they can eat the leaves as well as the flower, these along with twigs can be mixed into the rabbit’s hay and be hidden to make his or her life more interesting. In the wild rabbits would forage for a large percentage of their time. Something for bunny to safely chew on would also be a good source of amusement as well as playing a valuable role in helping to keep their teeth growth under control.
Take care with Rabbit Mixes as they can cause bunny to feed selectively, picking out their favourite bits and not eating others that contain vital nutrients. Pellets on the other hand are full of fibre and have an even spread of nutrients to prevent selective feeding. Don’t let bunny fill up on too many pellets though, they need to eat enough hay to help keep their teeth healthy.
It’s a good idea to get an annual check-up with the Vet to ensure that your bunny stays in ‘tip hop’ I mean, tip top condition and keeps bouncing all year long
Important always check that your garden plants are non-toxic for rabbits and that vegetables and herbs given to them are clean and not sprayed with chemicals. Do not feed your rabbit lawn mower grass cuttings. If you are ever concerned about your pet always consult your veterinarian.

walking hockey and a chat group, tim lorimer
We are The Walking Hockey and Chat Group. We are working with Public Health and offering a physical and social group, primarily almed at 065s. We play for an hour once a week and then have social interaction through a coffee and chat at Aldersley. The group is supported by Wolverhampton and Tettenhall Hockey Club and is one of their outreach projects.
We have a number of players who have mental and physical health Issues and what Is so good Is to see the smiles of enjoyment on everyone’s faces. Ablity to play Hockey Is not a consideration and we have a number of players who have never played. Someone will always volunteer to help with the arrangements lie,, putting the goals out or taking the drinks orders.
I always wanted to run this in conjunction with the City of Wolverhampton Council and was delighted when they agreed to not only promote It but also offer some
financial support to get it started. Our first session was In May 2022 with three players, we now have on average 18-20 players most weeks and over 30 signed up. What is also encouraging is one of the players has played for the club, others have progressed to the Back to Hockey sessions. We have had matches against Bromsgrove.
Opportunity to participate in some physical activity which most will not have experlenced before. We have a number of players who openly admit to having some form of mental illness and have found this session has really improved their lives. They really look forward to 11am on Wednesdays.
This must have a positive impact as they tell me this session has made a big difference to their lives. We have players from a number of different backgrounds all of whom integrate as one big happy group.

film reviews by joe jenkinson
IF (U)
DIRECTOR: JOHN KRASINSKI
This family-fun adventure is about a girl (Fleming) who can see everybody’s IFs (initials for ‘imaginary friends’). Teaming up with her neighbour (Reynolds), she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect children with their forgotten IFs, voiced by an ensemble of big names, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and Steve Carell (The Office). A sweet-natured period of relaxation for audiences. that reflects the incredible power of a child’s mind.
INSIDE OUT (U)
DIRECTOR: KELSEY MANN
Get ready for another feel-good (or feeleverything) adventure from Pixar in their sequel to Inside Out. This time, the emotional gang (Joy, Sadness and co.) has to deal with Riley, the girl they operate, embracing her teenage years and the arrival of new emotions. Expect the usual wit and charm Pixar often delivers through the creative yet relatable depiction of maturity.
KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (12)
DIRECTOR: WES BALL
The epic franchise continues with an exciting new vision from the writers of War of the Worlds and Avatar: The Way of Water. In a desolate future, apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to slavery. After saving a young girl, however, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question the past and determine the future for apes and humans alike.
FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA (15)
DIRECTOR: GEORGE MILLER
Mature audiences will find thrills in George Miller’s prequel to his Mad Max franchise. The last chapter, Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), was very much helmed by Charlize Theron’s Furiosa and now we learn her origins through her younger counterpart (Taylor Joy). Caught in a war between two tyrants (one played by Marvel’s Hemsworth in an against-type performance), Furiosa must survive through any means in a desert-ridden apocalypse that hosts vast quantities of steam-punk action.

asparagus frittata
with chives and petit pois
This is a beautifully light lunch which is low on carbs to enjoy in the garden on a sunny day with friends and family.
INGREDIENTS:
8 Free range eggs
3 pinches of Maldon sea salt
Cracked black or white pepper
2 packets of 125g asparagus
100g of petit pois
1 medium size onion or 2 banana shallots
A bunch of chives
75g of cheddar
1 packet of watercress
French dressing
EQUIPMENT
8” Oven proof dish
Steamer pan
Chopping board

Parchment paper
MAKES PREP TIME COOKING

PORTIONS MINUTES MINUTES
METHOD:
Get water boiling in your steamer pan. If you don’t have one just blanch the asparagus in salted water. Bend the asparagus towards the end of the stalk to find the natural break point and snap off then discard the woody ends. Chop into 2cm slices but leave the tips whole and steam for 45 seconds. Steam the petit pois for 3 minutes to soften. Dice the onion and sweat off in olive oil on a low heat until soft and caramelised (about 20 minutes).
Chop the chives finely and grate the cheese. Beat the eggs together with 3 pinches of salt and a few twists of pepper. Now mix all the above ingredients together.
Scrunch up a sheet of parchment paper and push into baking dish. Grease the baking dish with butter to help the paper stick to the sides. Pour in the egg mix and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 170ºc.
Put the watercress in a bowl and pour over some of the dressing, I like to use quite alot but that’s my personal taste. You can also add rocket, parsley and steamed green beans to the salad if you like to bulk it out.
SERVE WITH
Serve the frittata once it has cooled a little or leave to go cold if you prefer.

opportunities galore at old hall
From London to Space a Shropshire school packed last term with events, activities, shows, trips and sports fixtures with a variety of themes and venues.
Old Hall School in Wellington celebrated the end of the busy and hugely successful term by sending two teams to the regional hockey finals and holding a music competition featuring every pupil.
Head at Old Hall Mrs Anna Karacan said the school had started 2024 determined to pack each school week with numerous ventures which encouraged children to not only try new things but also improve their learning skills.
Staff and parents have been encouraged to put forward ideas and feedback on how the school can further enhance what it is already doing to create an environment rich with opportunities.
It has led to a new swimming festival for the Lower School (Reception – Year 2), assemblies led by each class showing off their musical talents or creating a presentation on a particular theme with one group choosing London.
Visitors to the school featured: bestselling author of Supertato, Sue Hendra; the team behind the Wonderdome which allows pupils to go inside a mobile planetarium to learn more about Space; polar explorer Alex Hibbert and the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire.
Trips saw children head to the Shrewsbury Museum, Trentham Gardens and Science Museum Live at Theatre Severn last term.
In sport more than 40 fixtures both at home and away were arranged with every Upper School pupil getting the opportunity to play in a competitive fixture with another school.
Teams battled it out at tournaments across the Midlands
in rugby, football, netball, hockey and swimming.
Highlights in sport included the U11 Girls’ Netball Team winning the Plate Cup at the IAPS Netball Tournament in Rugby and both the girls’ and boys’ hockey teams reaching the national IAPS finals.
Four teams took part in the Wrekin College Maths Challenge while World Book Day inspired a number of different initiatives including a Story Jar competition and staff encouraging children to share their favourite book with a pupil from another year group.
“Bringing this term to an end with our vibrant House Music Competition where every child had the chance to take part seemed like the best way to sign off what was a very busy term across the board,” said Mrs Karacan.
“I am a firm believer in giving children as many opportunities as possible to feel good about school and to then use that energy and positivity to encourage them to push for their very best.”
Mrs Karacan said they had started the term on a high note after a team from Old Hall won the Design4SDG UK Design competition at the national finals in London in January. The competition was aimed at proposals for how to help the planet.
A series of fundraising events also saw several days last term dedicated to charities and campaigns including Red Nose Day, the British Heart Foundation and the NSPCC.
“An excellent school encourages staff and the wider community to come up with ideas of different ways to add to the work done in the classroom to not only benefit the school but also help others. There should be no limits to those ambitions and the first instinct should always be “let’s see if we can make this happen”.

copenhagen
By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist
Danny Kaye once sang ‘wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen, friendly old girl of a town’, and it sure is! Copenhagen, located on Sealand, the largest island in Denmark, offers visitors an intriguing glimpse into a colourful tapestry of history and culture. In the 10th century, Copenhagen was a Viking fishing village and became the capital of Denmark in the 15th century.
To learn more about the fearsome Vikings I visited the fascinating Viking Ship Museum, located by the fjord in Roskilde; 35 kilometres from Copenhagen. The Viking Ship Hall features five spectacular Viking ships, which were discovered in 1962 at Skuldelev, 32 kilometres from where they are now displayed. These magnificent vessels were excavated from the sea bed in thousands of pieces and reconstructed with spectacular results. Visitors are also welcome to view the collection of traditional Nordic wooden boats berthed at the Museum Harbour and, as I am a committed seafarer, I was simply mesmerised.
Copenhagen attracts millions of visitors keen to explore this wonderful city and its many attractions including Amalienborg. Built in the 1750’s, the site is made up of four identical Danish Rococco style buildings; the palace of Christian VII, husband to Caroline Mathilde of Great Britain, the palace of Christian VIII, the palace of Frederik VIII, great, great grandfather of the
reigning Danish monarch King Frederik X, and the palace of Christian IX, the first monarch of the House of Glücksburg.
Eager to know more, I made my way to the the Amalienborg Museum, located within Christian VIII’s Palace, which displays a wide range of exhibits associated with the Danish monarchy dating back 150 years to Christian IX and Queen Louise.
I decided to mingle with the crowds at 12 noon sharp and I watched the changing of the royal guard marching from their barracks through the streets towards Amalienborg.
My next port of call was the National Museum, housed in the Prince’s Palace on Ny Vestergade. The Danish national treasures include archaeological finds from the Viking Age and the permanent displays include an extensive coin and medal collection, classical antiquities and a toy museum which attracts hordes of ‘grown up’ children!
During the reign of King Christian IV in the 17th century, Copenhagen became the capital of both Denmark and Norway and following the widespread devastation of the plague and subsequent fires in the 18th century the city embarked on a period of restoration and redevelopment, which included the founding of the Royal Danish Theatre, in 1748 and the Royal Danish Academy of Portraiture, Sculpture and Architecture, in 1754.
In the late 1700’s, during the French Revolution, the Russian Tsar Paul I, son of Catherine the Great and Peter III, founded the League of Armed Neutrality to facilitate free trade with France for Russia, Prussia, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The British Government deemed this to be a hostile act, which threatened the Royal Navy’s supremacy over the French fleet. On 02 April 1801, under the command of Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson led the Royal Navy’s main attack on the Danish-Norwegian fleet. Many of the Danish-Norwegian vessels were destroyed before a truce was reached.

Six years later, during the Napoleonic Wars, the British Government was anxious that Denmark might close the Baltic Sea to British vessels with the possibility of French troops arriving in Sealand. In 1807, the Bombardment of Copenhagen began when the British fleet attacked the Danish/Norwegian fleet and the city was evacuated. Over a thousand buildings were destroyed by fire and the city suffered greatly. The Danes duly surrendered and the British retreated from Copenhagen.
The Danish Golden Age began in the 19th century and Copenhagen was transformed with new buildings reflecting the Neoclassical style and the arts flourished.
German Romanticism emerged and the works of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg led the way. To view examples of Eckersberg’s works, including the magnificent 1841 masterpiece ‘A nude woman doing her hair before a mirror’ I hurried along to the Hirschsprung Museum on Stockolmsgade. The collection also features works by P.S. Kroyer and the enchanting ‘Summer day at the South Beach of Skagen’, completed in 1884, demands admiring glances from those in the room.
Later in the afternoon I felt the urge to embark on some retail therapy and ‘bag a bargain’. I headed for Strøget, one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets crammed with international brands including Louis Vuitton, Mulberry and Prada and I browsed around the department store Magasin du Nord. For special gifts to take home I was persuaded to purchase a wide array of goodies from the Royal Copenhagen Flagship Store, founded in 1775 and purveyor to the royal Danish court. Located on Amagertorv, the property is a charming three storey Renaissance house, which dates back to 1616. Displays of the finest porcelain figurines, gifts and dinnerware should entice even the most resistant to part with more than a few Krona!
Weighed down with shopping bags and in need of some pampering I checked into the D’Angleterre hotel, which
provides the highest level of comfort and service. Located on Kongens Nytorv, one of the city’s classic squares, this imposing hotel, established in 1755, is an historic landmark, which oozes with charm and sophistication.
I was escorted to a spacious and comfortable deluxe onebedroom suite, which features elegant furnishings, plump sofas, luxurious drapes and a very grand bathroom. Hotel facilities include an urban spa, a fitness room and a swimming pool, which is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day.
Later that evening I headed for the hotel’s Balthazar champagne bar and whilst sipping on a glass brimming with bubbles I decided to dine ‘in house’ and made my reservation at Marchal, the hotel’s impressive restaurant, recipient of a Michelin star.
I sampled the delicious winter truffle ravioli with Jerusalem artichoke, gruyére and creamy truffle sauce and accompanied by the 2015 Moët and Chandon, it was, quite simply, unforgettable.
After a deep slumber, a long lie-in followed by a rejuvenating shower and a first class breakfast, I decided to take a leisurely stroll along the Langelinie promenade, the site of the Little Mermaid bronze statue by Edvard Eriksen. Based on the fairy tale by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, the Little Mermaid statue was unveiled in 1913 and has become an icon and a major tourist attraction, recognised worldwide.
As I took a breather beside the Little Mermaid the sea air filled my nostrils and I reflected on my explorations and suddenly the voice of Danny Kaye sang in my head ‘wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen, salty old queen of the sea’

BIG BROTHER
The first Housewife to appear on Celebrity Big Brother, Lauren Simon, was a hit with ITV viewers and Housewives colleagues. To show their support, Nick & Royston appeared on Big Brother Late & Live with AJ Odudu to help boost Lauren`s votes. Nick and Royston have been friends with her for many years and expressed their love and pride for Lauren. They also showed support and gave reasons why she should go all the way!! Unfortunately, she did not go all the way to the final, but I am sure she will share all the gossip when they next meet up.

To celebrate Royston`s birthday, he and Nick joined friends Emily and Jason for a night out in Birmingham. The evening kicked off in Tattu for drinks. creating your wedding theme
When you start to plan your wedding, you naturally will notice that you will be creating a style that is individual to yourselves. It may be a subtle theme with a twist of your style or a themed wedding that captures your favourite things. Most themes can be worked into your flowers. Very popular themes are Woodland & Rustic, Boho-Style, English Afternoon Tea and Romantic & Dreamy.
For the more creative couples the ideas will include a more dominant focal theme. I have created some very eye-catching themed weddings as a florist. You can view all our images on our website www.theflowershoponline. co.uk or take a look at our Instagram page ‘weddingflowersandstyling’. Lots of different styles are shown and will give you great ideas for your special day.
There are always weddings I will remember designing for the fun and expressions that I see on people’s faces when the designs become real.

RUSTIC
This rustic theme-styled wedding was particularly memorable. We start with these lovely gypsophila posies for the bridesmaids where the stems are bound in hessian and string with a little teal diamanté to compliment the dresses.
The great thing about decorating your civil ceremony is that all items can be transferred over into the wedding breakfast room, so you get the joy of the displays ALL day!
It is great to continue your theme throughout the venue on your wedding day. These centrepieces create a real statement for your wedding breakfast. You can opt for low-level centrepieces or go for a tall arrangement that creates a WOW factor for you and your guests.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE!
It is so important to create the perfect entrance for your wedding guests. It creates a warm, welcoming touch and really sets the tone for the day. This image complements the images shown perfectly with a gorgeous rustic theme running all through the venue.
TABLE PLAN DECORATION
There are a wide range of areas you can decorate within your wedding venue. It is a lovely idea to have a different idea for your table plan – what do you think of this?
As you can see from the image, this creates a real feature for that all important guest list.

A reason to smile. Proarch.
The immediate replacement of missing or failing dentitions using dental implants has been practised here in Wolverhampton for over a decade.
Mr Jonathon Pugh working from the Parkdale Dental and Implant Clinic on the Tettenhall Road offers this life-enhancing treatment. Using the ProArch concept on Straumann dental implants missing and failing dentitions can be replaced with fixed full arch teeth. If bone volume allows this can be achieved in a single day.
Teeth are removed and replaced with dental implants which act as new, secure roots. A couple of hours later a preprepared provisional bridge is fitted restoring your smile but with immediate function from fixed replacement teeth. After six months or so the initial immediate function bridge is replaced with the final restorations constructed with individually crafted ceramic teeth. This results in aesthetic and very strong replacement teeth.
Jon has worked with dental implants for over 30 years, placing over 5,000 implants in the last ten years alone. He accepts new patients for implant consultations and is dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for those who have lost or are losing teeth. All aspects of treatment are undertaken at the clinic but Jon’s main area of interest is helping people through the process of tooth loss to rehabilitation with implant-borne replacement teeth.
If you would like to know more about the ProArch concept search for Straumann ProArch, open the link to Parkdale Dental and Implant Clinic and watch the video.

i think i need a hearing aid…
It can take people a while to admit they need a hearing aid so reaching out is a huge step.
Chances are, you’re here because:
• You’ve become part of the “Ay?” team
• People seem to mumble a lot
• You crank up the volume or use subtitles on TV
• You’re relying on lip-reading
• You have a ringing or buzzing (tinnitus) with your hearing loss
Your lifestyle and listening needs are unique to you. A tailored, individualised approach to hearing health care is crucial to achieving your hearing goals. That’s exactly what we provide at Hear In.
Clients often say, ‘I’m coping fine, I hear what I need to hear’. Their hearing may feel dull or muffled and assume it’s just wax when in fact their ears are perfectly clear. If ‘things are loud enough but not clear’ it’s a sign that it’s time to have your hearing tested. With hearing aids things become clear, the ‘fog’ is lifted! Don’t settle for coping, enjoy the fullness of life.
So who do you turn to and trust - NHS or private?
We are lucky to have a NHS hearing aid service in the UK. Why choose to go privately for your hearing healthcare? The biggest difference between the NHS and private sector is choice. NHS are often limited to 2-3 hearing aids using technology up to 4 years old.
As an independent hearing care service, we can choose from 80 - 120 hearing aids using the latest technology from leading manufacturers.
• Style – there are 3 main styles of hearing aids: discrete behind the ear (available in a choice of colours), custom made and completely invisible.
• Connectivity – many modern hearing devices have direct connectivity to your phone, tv or tablet. This allows you to makes phone calls or listen to your favourite music or tv programs directly through your hearing aids and so much clearer!
• Apps – most hearing aids now have a free app to download to your smartphone. You can control volume, tone and even background noise at the touch of a button.
During your hearing consultation, our expert audiologists will look at your listening needs and test results and ask about your personal and lifestyle needs. Our excellent aftercare service ensures that we are with you every step of the way to get the very best from your new hearing aids.

look out for those rays
With spring underway and summer just around the corner, in this issue we’re going to be talking about sunglasses. Not only can sunglasses provide a fashion statement, but they also play a vital role in protecting our eyes from the harmful effects of UV radiation.
Whilst awareness of UV protection has increased, and many of us diligently apply sunscreen with high SPF to shield our skin from the sun’s harmful rays, the impact of UV radiation on our eyes is often underestimated. Unlike the visible effects of sunburn on the skin, the damage caused by UV rays to our eyes is not immediately apparent, leading to a common oversight in eye protection. However, just as SPF defends our skin from sunburn and skin cancer, sunglasses equipped with UV protection act as the SPF for our eyes, safeguarding against a myriad of eye conditions and preserving our long-term vision health.
UV exposure can lead to some of the following conditions:
• Cataract - UV radiation can trigger harmful oxidative stress reactions within the lens of the eye, to lead to lens clouding.
• Age-related macular degeneration - AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50 which again is linked to UV exposure and oxidative
stress. AMD is characterised by a build-up of waste products at the macula at the back of the eye, causing a deterioration in central vision.
• Pterygium – This is a pink, fleshy growth on the white part of the eye. Symptoms, when present, can include redness, foreign body sensation and tearing.
• Carcinomas - Cancers of the eyelid, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are linked to UV exposure. No link has been made between UV exposure and other types of ocular cancers.
However, the benefits of sunglasses extend beyond protection; they are a statement of personal style and expression. GUESS and BOSS are the latest sunglasses brands to grace our shelves at Flint Optometry. Embracing the trends of 2024, these stylish shades cater to both men and women, whether you prefer a sleek and sophisticated design or a bolder and more adventurous look.

estate planning
Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.
What is an ‘estate’
Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions.
Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.
What is a Will?
A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.
Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do.
Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:
- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.
- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.
- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.
- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.
Benefits of a Will
These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will: You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.
Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.
Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.
Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children.
Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.
Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.
When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.
Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.
Inheritance tax
It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.
The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries. How much does a Will cost?
This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.

“It’s Crazy That We Don’t Talk
About Money to Our Family”
In a society where the conversation around money still remains a taboo subject, families sometimes avoid and shy away from having conversations about money. Unfortunately, this can lead to disharmony in families and in some cases a complete breakdown in family relationships.
I pose the question. Is it time we reconsidered the silence in our homes regarding money and start talking about how we look after and manage our money. I think it is time and probably long overdue.
This is not just about discussing budgets or expenses, but about a deeper, more inclusive dialogue that covers our aspirations, plans, and the inevitable – our departure.
Let’s dive into why and how we should break the monetary silence within our family walls.
1. Through the Ages: What We Need to Teach Our Children About Money:
Financial literacy is a gift that keeps on giving. Starting from the piggy bank to the complexities of investing, teaching our children about money prepares them for the uncertainties of the future. It’s about instilling a sense of responsibility, understanding the value of hard work, and the importance of saving and investing. In an age dominated by digital transactions, ensuring our children are money-savvy is more crucial than ever. They should learn not just how to spend, but how to earn, save, and invest wisely. Financial literacy is not something we are born with and most of us learn by seeing what
our parents do. So, the lessons, we pass on need to be good ones.
2. The Importance of Understanding What You Are Planning For:
Conversations about money should include discussions about our life’s goals and how to financially prepare for them. Are we saving for a university fund, a family holiday, or retirement? Understanding what we are working towards can help align family efforts and expectations. It is about sharing our vision that motivates everyone to contribute and keep track of maintaining good financial habits. If our families understand what we are aiming for, there is a better chance that they we stay onboard. Keeping them in the dark is not going help here.
3. How You Are Planning Your Money:
Budgeting is not a solo task but a family affair. Discussing how you are planning your money involves talking about incomes, savings, mortgages, loans, and living costs. It’s crucial to have an open conversation where each family member understands the financial state and can contribute ideas towards better management. This could involve setting collective financial goals, discussing investment strategies, or finding ways to cut down on unnecessary expenses. Aligning family values will certainly help achieve your financial goals.
60 finance
4. What You Want to Happen When You Get Older:
As uncomfortable as it may be, talking about the financial aspects of aging is essential. This involves discussing retirement plans, care costs, and living arrangements. Openly talking about these topics can help avoid misunderstandings and conflicts in the future. It’s about ensuring that as you get older, your wishes are understood and respected by your family members. As uncomfortable as the subject is for many, it should not be shied away from if everyone in the family is to continue to work together.
5. Make Sure That You Write a Will:
A will is not just a document for the wealthy; it is a critical document for anyone who wants to ensure their assets are distributed as they wish. Writing a will should be an essential part of family discussions about money. It provides a clear guide for your loved ones during a time of grief and ensures that your assets are handled according to your wishes. It will also help avoid unnecessary family disagreements if there has been a conversion ahead of your departure. The last thing we want to happen is our children squabbling after we are gone.
6. Be Sure That Your Will Clearly States What You Want to Happen When You Are No Longer Here:
Clarity is key when it comes to your will. It’s not enough
to just have one; it needs to be clear, up-to-date, and legally valid. Ensure that your family understands your wishes and the contents of your will. This can prevent disputes and ensure that your legacy is carried out as intended. Unfortunately, I see more and more arguments between families and wills being contested and substantial personal and financial costs to families.
Conclusion:
Breaking the silence on financial discussions within the family is crucial for a harmonious and secure future. It is about more than just numbers and accounts; it’s about shared dreams, preparedness, and peace of mind. As we navigate through the complexities of life, let us all make money talk a norm in our homes. After all, when it comes to family, transparency is the foundation of trust and understanding. Let us not wait for a crisis to start the conversation; the time to talk is now.

don’t put off making your will
No one wants to think about death, but spending time now dealing with the inevitable, could save your family a lot of heartache and potentially money.
What Do You Need To Consider When Making A Will?
Think about your own circumstances. Below are some questions to ask yourself -
• Who should benefit from your estate?
• Do you need to plan for inheritance tax?
• Do you have assets in different countries?
• Do you need to provide for children from a previous marriage, whilst still providing for a current partner?
• Will your partner be able to stay in your home if you die?
• Do you have adult children who live with you?
Some wills are going to be more straightforward than others but for many people there are other factors that mean a

bit more thought is required. You might want to make sure that not only do the right people inherit but also that other people specifically do not. If you don’t have a will, there is a chance that other family members will automatically benefit under the rules of Intestacy.
Here at Thornes we can steer you through the process of making your will, giving you sensible and practical advice.

smiles for miles at first stop wolverhampton!
Time flies when you’re having fun…
…Just ask the many motorists to have visited First Stop Wolverhampton, who have been leaving the garage with big smiles on their faces ever since its major rebrand 12 months ago.
Owner Simon Bennett and his team have been redefining the automotive retail experience thanks to their progressive service levels, a range of premium products and an all-round experience that’s as good as it gets in the city.
It has been almost exactly one year since the famous Chapel Ash garage become a First Stop centre in a breaking news announcement that feels like yesterday. Since then, no longer is a transaction described as a ‘distress purchase,’ as motorists are feeling empowered and uplifted instead – with good reason!
To celebrate First Stop’s first anniversary, the team is now offering free tyre and vehicle checks, as more vehicles take to the road for weekend trips in warmer weather. These complimentary checks - combined with one of the most welcoming waiting areas and friendliest approaches to customer service - is ensuring that First
Stop stands out as much as the striking signage above the shutters.
Owner Simon Bennett said: “Time has flown by and we can’t quite believe it’s been a year since we became a First Stop centre!
“It’s been a great decision to move to First Stop, as we’re able to offer customers even more than ever. We want to attract even more motorists to us, which is where we hope our free checks come into their own. If we can achieve one thing in the next 12 months, then it’s to make even more people feel empowered and enlightened when they visit us.
“Our ultimate goal is to redefine what a garage experience should feel like, with each customer being made to feel in charge and in control when they come to us. We understand that each car is a pride and joy to their owner and we treat it as such. It’s a responsibility we don’t take for granted and we want the experience to be an enjoyable one.”

toyota supra-2.0 pro auto
The Supra has been around for more years than I care to remember, it has always been a stylish, without doubt handsome, exciting vehicle, writes Bob Hickman.
The latest incarnation really is eye-catching, whenever I parked the car, there were admiring glances, thumbs up and people just wanted to know more about it. I think you can see from the pictures it really is a stunning design. I am reliably informed that Toyota have collaborated with BMW in this particular vehicle and those of you who are familiar with the Z4 will be pleasantly surprised the amount of equipment and features that are comparable.
There are 2 engine derivatives, there is a beast of a 3-litre borrowed from the BMW stable, a 6-cylinder turbo charged producing a huge 330bhp, but the test car had the smaller 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 251 bhp, more performance than this humble scribe could use, a 0-60 in marginally over 5 seconds and a top speed, where legal and permissible, of 155mph.
Let’s get the economy and fuel aspect out of the way early, Toyota suggests 38.7mpg, in my 400 miles with the vehicle, and a variety of twisty B, A, and motorways the computer said 39.7mpg which for a vehicle of this pedigree, style and performance, I found to be astounding. The CO2 emissions are given as g/km of 167 which is on the high side but having that been said you don’t buy this type of vehicle if you want economy.
From a driving perspective, entry in to the vehicle is good if you are a limbo dancer, narrow door apertures really do make this an awkward car to get into, I thought my MG was low but the Supra is even lower. The cabin is spacious and the seats very supportive, the driver has a tremendous amount of adjustment of the seat and the steering wheel, and it really does have a superb, driving position.
In a sports car you don’t expect to find a huge boot but 290 litres is not too bad, I was able to get in a couple of picnic chairs and a small suitcase for a weekend away.
Out on the country roads the Supra is an easy, able, willing companion, the suspension and the steering are tight and taut and it is like the old cliché of driving a go kart, it goes exactly where you point it. It really is a delight to drive. The automatic gearbox in a sports car will not suit the purists but it seemed to have a mind of its own always able to be in the correct ratio at the right
time and doing the right speed.
The driver and the passenger sit extremely low in the Supra, so low that conventional SUV’s look huge when you are sitting behind them. The visibility is good over the huge long, lengthy bonnet and in addition in and around town the large pillars can restrict a little, but the view out of the rear is very good and in addition Toyota have equipped the Supra with a very important piece of kit, i.e. a reversing camera. There are sensors equipped which help when parking the vehicle.
The interior, feels solid and well built, the sport seats are particularly comfortable.
The entertainment system had a 9” screen, it was sharp and worked well, it has an intuitive menu system and it is very much BMW with a circular control on the transmission to enable so you can navigate your way through the options.
The driver has all the information that you would wish for, with a digital driver display, that can be split to allow the speedo and the rev counter in the middle, I always like to know how many miles I have travelled and how many miles I have left, and the fuel that is left in the tank.
My particular Toyota Supra 2.0 Pro derivative had the on the road price of £50,545 but this did include the optional metallic Dawn Blue paint which I really think, when allied with the black diamond cut alloy wheels, set the vehicle off.
Toyota give a 3-year, 60,000 miles warranty and servicing is suggested yearly or 10,000 miles whichever comes soonest.

hyundai kona n line
The market place is awash with the SUV derivatives, Hyundai with the Kona though have introduced an interesting looking vehicle.
There is not a straight panel anywhere and the latest version is slightly, longer, wider and taller than its predecessor writes Bob Hickman.
You have a choice between petrol engines or as in my case a 1-litre petrol coupled to an electric motor, a hybrid. During a week in company with the Kona I managed to average 52mpg, which I think is quite acceptable.
The Kona, has a slightly elevated, decent driving position, visibility is excellent, and with the benefit of front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera it is never a problem to slot it in to that small parking space.
On the open road the Kona seemed to swallow up the bumps, which suggests that the designers and engineers have got the suspension just right for UK roads.
The hybrid system works well, it runs on electric and battery power for a time and when necessary, the engine kicks in obtusely without any discernible noise. Out of town the driver will be quite pleasantly surprised by the ability of the Kona on twisty roads, take it on the motorway and you will be rewarded by an effortless comfortable drive with very discernible wind or tyre noise invading the cabin.
Inside the vehicle, there is plenty of storage space and the driver and front passenger have plenty of leg, head, and shoulder room, the driver has the benefit of a multiadjustable steering wheel. Instrumentation has a large touchscreen, and a few buttons on the steering, make life easy.
One of the decent features of the Kona is the boot, it is large with a 466 litres capacity and this makes it one of the most generous in the SUV range. Very useful if you have to carry a lot of kit, a low boot sill is a bonus. If you need more capacity, you can drop the rear seats and this extends capacity to 1300 litres of space almost vanlike in proportions.
As previously mentioned, there are derivatives of the Kona, 2 petrol’s the 1.1 litre produces 120 bhp and the 1.6-litre which produces a much more powerful 198bhp. The 1.1-litre combined with the electric hybrid system in my test vehicle, had a maximum power output of 141bhp, more than sufficient to keep the vehicle in and up to and with other traffic in any situation.
Hyundai have not skimped on the technology, Blue Tooth, a DAB radio, smart phone integration, which allows Apple Play and Android, and in addition safety features are in a plethora with air bags front, side, curtain and centre. It also has anti-lock brakes, Downhill Brake Control. I like a vehicle that has a hill-start assist, which holds the brakes for you without keeping your foot on the pedal.
All in all, Hyundai with the Kona have packaged the vehicle, and prices range from just under £26,000 to just over £36,000. The Hyundai warranty is good, 12 years anti-perforation and a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty come as standard.
