As we step into autumn 2024, interior design trends are embracing a blend of cosy warmth and modern sophistication. Rich, earthy tones such as olive green and mustard yellow are taking centre stage, infusing spaces with a sense of comfort and connection to nature. Textures play a vital role this season and natural wood finishes add depth and character to rooms. Mixing these textures creates a harmonious balance that invites relaxation and a touch of luxury into living spaces.
In terms of furniture and decor, the autumn 2024 trends are leaning towards sustainable and artisanal pieces. Handcrafted furniture made from natural materials like rattan, bamboo and reclaimed wood is gaining popularity, reflecting a growing emphasis on eco-conscious design choices.
Statement lighting fixtures, particularly those with organic shapes and warm metallic finishes, are becoming focal points in rooms adding a touch of elegance and personality. Additionally, incorporating indoor plants and botanical motifs into the decor brings a refreshing and rejuvenating element to interiors, enhancing the overall ambiance with a hint of greenery.
As we delve deeper into autumn 2024, the concept of “biophilic design” is making its mark in interior spaces.
This design approach focuses on connecting people with nature through elements like natural light, greenery and natural materials. Biophilic design principles are being integrated into homes through features like large windows that maximise natural light, living green walls that purify the air and furniture designs inspired by organic shapes found in nature. Embracing biophilic design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of interiors but also promotes wellbeing by creating spaces that foster a deeper connection with the natural world, making homes a sanctuary of tranquillity and balance.

2. NATURAL MATERIALS
Expect a shift towards warm earthy colours like terracotta, ochre, deep greens and rich browns. These hues create a cosy and inviting atmosphere perfect for the fall season.
3. VINTAGE AND RETRO STYLES
Sustainability continues to be a major focus. Materials such as wood, stone, rattan and wool will be popular. Look for furniture and decor that highlight natural textures and finishes.
Nostalgic designs are making a comeback. Midcentury modern furniture, vintage decor pieces and retro colour palettes will add character and charm to interiors.
4. MAXIMALISM

7. SUSTAINABLE & RECYCLED MATERIALS
Choose furniture made from reclaimed wood or recycled materials. Look for eco-friendly brands and products. Use recycled glass vases, repurposed metal decor, or upcycled furniture pieces.
8. FUNCTIONAL SPACES
Multifunctional Furniture - invest in furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed, a fold-out desk or a storage ottoman. Arrange your space to allow for flexibility. Use room dividers or movable furniture to create different zones.
9.STATEMENT PIECES
Introduce bold artwork, a colourful rug or an eye-catching light fixture as a focal point in your room.
5. BIOPHILIC DESIGN
Add a variety of indoor plants to your space. Consider creating a small indoor garden or using hanging planters.
Maximise natural light - by using sheer curtains and strategically-placed mirrors to reflect light.
6. ARTISANAL & HANDCRAFTED ITEMS
Unique Pieces - invest in handmade pottery, woven textiles or handcrafted furniture. These items add a personal touch and support artisans. Try your hand at creating your own decor items, like macramé wall hangings or hand-painted ceramics.

keep your pets in tip top condition
Well we’re almost at the turn of the season once again, the nights are starting to fade, the leaves are turning to browns and we’re noticing the cold morning breeze in the air.
It’s been a strange year so far, one that we will never forget and normal routines have very much changed. One important routine can still be kept and should not be forgotten and that’s making sure that your pets are in tip top condition! It’s a good time to give your furry friends a once over and a good groom to remove any dead fur, this will help keep their coats nice and healthy and let their skin breath as well as removing any debris. Check their teeth and nails and have a good look at them all over to make sure they are in tip top condition as we head towards the colder months.
For Rabbits flystrike can be a problem at any time of the year, if a bluebottle fly finds a warm place to feed and reproduce it may continue to do so and not hibernate during the winter. Many flies are harmless but some, such as the bluebottle, will lay their eggs on poor bunnies’ fur. When the eggs hatch the maggots begin to eat the rabbit’s flesh and sadly this can cause shock and death in a very short amount of time.
Flies are particularly attracted to soiled or damp fur around bunny’s bottom. It is good practice to check your rabbit daily throughout the year and twice daily in the summer, to ensure that they are clean and healthy. Pay particular attention to their behind, keep this area well groomed, clean and dry which will help minimise the risk of Flystrike and ensure that any issues are dealt with immediately. Should you notice any problems, ensure that you contact your Veterinary Surgeon as soon as possible.
Just like humans guinea pigs can’t produce their own vitamin C so it’s a good idea to supplement their diet by providing them with fresh fruit and vegetables to ensure that they stay healthy. Bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C and a really tasty treat too. Sadly, without the correct diet guinea pigs will quickly become deficient in vitamin C, which can then lead to a condition called
Scurvy. Unfortunately, Scurvy is quite common in guinea pigs, the condition can cause skin issues and painful joint and dental problems. Although the fresh fruit and vegetables are important, take care not feed too much fruit as we don’t want them getting diabetes.
Like other rodents, guinea pigs’ teeth continuously grow, so it is important that they get the right diet and care. Just like rabbits, guinea pigs need an unlimited supply of high-quality grass hay to help keep their teeth from growing too long and also to help aid digestion as well as helping to prevent boredom. Dandelions, for example, have a lot of health benefits as they are high in fiber, antioxidants and a good source of minerals as well as vitamins. Rabbits absolutely love dandelions and they can eat the leaves as well as the flower, these along with rabbit friendly twigs can be mixed into their hay and be hidden to make your furry ones life that little bit more interesting. In the wild rabbits would forage for a large percentage of their time and established dandelion plants can flower again in the autumn.
Take care with rabbit and guinea pig mixes as they can cause the little darlings to feed selectively, picking out their favourite bits and not eating others that contain vital nutrients. Pellets on the other hand are full of fibre and have an even spread of nutrients to prevent selective feeding. Don’t let bunny and piggy fill up on too many pellets though, they need to eat enough hay to help keep their teeth healthy.
It’s a good idea to get an annual check-up with the Vet if possible, to ensure that your furry ones stay in ‘tip hop’ I mean, tip top condition!!!
Important always check that your garden plants are non-toxic for your pet before they are planted, some may be toxic to animals and can make them seriously ill and even cause death. Always contact your veterinarian if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

goats cheese and roasted red pepper toast
This is a very simple lunch or starter with big umami flavour and one of my absolute favourites on a hot day with a sparkling wateror English wine.
INGREDIENTS:
300g of goats cheese
2 Square ciabatta
2 Red peppers
1 Rosemary sprig
A few basil leaves
1 Garlic bulb
Olive oil
EQUIPMENT
Chopping board
Serrated bread knife / pastry knife
Baking tray
Kitchen foil
2-4 10 30
METHOD:
Pre heat your oven to 190˚c. Slice the ciabattas in half horizontally and drizzle with a little olive oil and set aside.
Quarter the peppers vertically and remove any green bits, white membrane and any seeds. Chop the rosemary as finely as you can and mix in with olive oil then toss the peppers in the oil, place on the baking tray. Slice the whole garlic bulb horizontally, drizzle with oil and place on the tray with the peppers, place a little foil over the garlic or place upside down and remove after cooking with a spatula. Roast for around 20 minutes or until soft, checking on the garlic to make sure it is not darkening too much.
Once the peppers are roasted, slice the goats cheese and place on the ciabatta followed by some fresh basil and then top with the peppers. Bake this in the oven for 15 minutes or until browning and cooked through. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
SERVE WITH
Serve with a nice crispy mixed leaf and herb salad with balsamic syrup.
burnt basque cheesecake
with hot chocolate sauce
If you love cheesecake but are staying away from the biscuits this is the answer. Perfectly velvety and rich with the addition of boozy hot chocolate and frozen blackberries.

300ml of double cream
200g of milk or dark chocolate
50ml of khalua or dark rum

PORTIONS MINUTES HOUR HOURS
METHOD:
Take the mascarpone from the fridge at least 1 hour before you intend to make a start on this recipe. Pre-heat the oven to 200˚c
Add the mascarpone, vanilla and sugar to the bowl of the food mmixer with paddle and beat on medium for 4 minutes stopping halway through to scrape the bowl with the spatula. Add the whole eggs one by one until each one is fully mixed in and then add in the sour cream and mix thouroughly again for 20 seconds. Spinkle in the salt and one teaspoon of cornflour at a time until all mixed in. Scrape the bowl again to ensure everything is off the bottom and mixed in. Rub the nob of butter all over the cake tin and scrunch up a piece of parchment paper. Press the paper onto the bottom of the tin and into the edges so there are no parts loose. If the paper isnt big enough and there are gaps, start again and tear a bigger piece of paper off the roll. Once the tin is lined pour the mixture in and give it a bang on the kitchen worktop to remove any gaps/air in the bottom of the pan. Bake the cheesecake for about 50 minutes until the top is a dark brown colour and there is still a little wobble when you shake the tin. Once finished allow to cool on the side in the kitchen for a good hour or 2 then place in the fridge for a good few hours more or over night. You can eat warm if you can’t wait.
Whilst the cheesecake is baking gently warm up the cream in a small pan and add the chocolate callets / buttons stirring until fully melted and the cream looks like hot chocolate. Pour in the khalua or rum and simmer for a few minutes.
When you are ready to serve the cheesecake simply cut into portions and plate up, warm the choclate sauce gently and spoon over each slice. Serve with frozen blackberries that have been out of the freezer for about 15 minutes or use fresh if you like but I like the sorbet effect of frozen berries.
If you want to add biscuits I recommend crushing up some amaretto biscuits and sprinkling over the top

new opportunities at wrekin college and old hall school
New subjects, new opportunities and new faces will all be part of an ambitious new academic year as a Shropshire educational trust looks forward to another successful 12 months.
The Wrekin and Old Hall Trust is set to welcome back its current pupils and say hello to dozens of new children with an added bounce in its step this September.
At Wrekin College the leadership team has just announced the introduction of Law as part of the lineup of A Level subjects while a new team is now in place to lead its thriving sixth form including award-winning teacher Simon Platford, also Director of Music at Wrekin.
It comes as the school clocked up numerous successes in sport, music and the arts during the last academic year.
Teams in rugby, hockey, cricket and netball reached the final stages of competition at county or national level with the school’s Jazz and Concert Bands picking up five national prizes between them.
Youngsters at the school have built on those experiences over the summer with more than 20 heading off to Kenya on a month-long expedition and others taking part in an exchange programme with schools in Australia.
In Kenya the group spent time working on a variety of local projects including building a gabion to prevent further land erosion through flooding, taking part in a conservation drive to protect animals and visiting a school.
With one of the most respected Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes in the county, Wrekin also saw numerous bronze, silver and gold awards completed this year.
Head at Wrekin College Mr Toby Spence reflected on his first year in the role as he looked forward to another positive and uplifting year.
“I had huge respect for the Wrekin and Old Hall Trust community even before I took on this role and in the last year it had been a real privilege to be an integral part of what it does so well,” he added.
“There is a real and collective push to provide the best education possible and allow each individual to flourish with genuine support from their teachers, families and peers. With a positive environment like this we can
continually look at what else we can add and this coming academic year is no different. I am delighted we have added Law to an impressive and varied lineup of A Level and BTEC options and there are more developments to come.”
Younger Wrekin pupils in years seven and eight will also be joining pupils from Old Hall School on a ski trip during Easter 2025 as the two schools strengthen their relationship.
Old Hall is also gearing up to build on recent successes with a new member of staff announced for Innovation and Technology - a department introduced with the arrival of Head Anna Karacan who joined in 2022. It has already enjoyed significant success with a national prize awarded in January to an intrepid team from Old Hall and further new initiatives planned.
Staff are ambitious for all age groups with children from Reception taking part in an exciting and innovative curriculum including weekly swimming and Spanish lessons.
Upper School children (Year 3 upwards) take part in a packed schedule of competitive sports fixtures while the Horizons extra-curricular programme has been widely praised for its vast array of opportunities to not only hone key life skills, but also try other interests such as podcasting and coding.
Mrs Karacan said she was very much looking forward to the new academic year feeling energised and positive for what can be achieved.
“I am very fortunate and proud of an innovative team who have already introduced so many new opportunities for our children, including taking part in national competitions. They are now looking at even more inspiring ways to encourage engagement and a positive learning experience,’ she added.
“I feel very passionately that this willingness to be ambitious for our pupils should start as early as possible and that means from the age of four when you secure the foundations of a child’s education. Encouraging confidence at this age and a feeling of achievement in key subjects and life skills makes all the difference as our youngsters go through school.”
the captivating city of cardiff
By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist
Cardiff, the capital of Wales, offers visitors an intriguing glimpse into a colourful and rich history and a vibrant culture. Archaeological finds, discovered in and around the capital, date back to 6000 BC, providing evidence of settlements and include the St Lythan’s and Tinkinswood burial chambers, both built during the Neolithic period, the chambered tomb of Cae’rarfau, Creigiau, a dormitory settlement, the long barrow of Gwern y Cleppa and five Bronze Age tumuli.
I set off, with a spring in my step, bound for Cardiff Castle, which is located within verdant parklands in the city centre. Imposing Romanesque walls and beautiful towers beckon those who enter to explore two thousand years of history. Cardiff Castle dates back to 1081 when William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England, began work on the castle keep within the walls of the third century Roman fort. During the Victorian era major alterations and extensions took place and were funded by the Scottish aristocrat and philanthropist John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute. William Burges, the English architect and designer was engaged to undertake the enormous task. The Bute family were also responsible for the emergence of Cardiff as the world’s biggest coal exporting port and the castle remained in the family until 1947 when it was gifted to the city.
As I approached the magnificent castle I paused to admire the castle’s clock, which was designed by Edward John Dent, who also designed the clock on Westminster’s Elizabeth Tower, fondly known as Big Ben, although this is in fact one of the clock’s bells.
Cardiff Castle’s interiors are simply glorious, featuring rich and colourful murals, glittering stained glass, intricate wood carvings, marble and gilding. Each room reflects a grand theme focusing on Mediterranean gardens, Italian and Arabian décor. I was mesmerised by the Arabian room’s wooden ceiling, which is covered in gold leaf and beautifully decorated. The dazzling stained glass windows feature crystal balls to encourage the reflection of sunlight onto the ceiling. Another outstanding room is the Banqueting Hall, which dates back to the 15th century and although the floors, ceiling and decoration are Victorian the spectacle is wonderful.
There is of course so much to explore and alas, the hours whizzed by and as evening approached I headed for the Marriott Hotel, located on Mill Lane, only a ten minute walk from the castle. Following a swift and efficient check-in I was escorted to a one-bedroom suite on a private access floor. Measuring 42sqm, the bedroom features an ultra comfortable super king size bed and the lounge presented a contemporary plump sofa, ideal for curling up in front of the huge television screen. Suite privileges include access to the executive lounge, which provides complimentary Hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks, hot beverages and canapés.
Feeling rather peckish I decided to head for the Brown’s, the hotel’s modern restaurant. I ordered the succulent lemon sole accompanied by glass of Vidal Sauvignon Blanc, which were served with aplomb.
Up with larks and following a hearty breakfast I hailed a taxi and headed for Llandaff Cathedral, another of Cardiff’s treasures. The cathedral dates back to 1120 and features a splendid sanctuary arch with medallions and the north and south doorways leading into the nave date back to the end of the twelfth century. In January 1941 a German parachute landmine destroyed the roof and south aisle. Post war restorations, repairs and refurbishment were celebrated in 1960 and the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended the service.
Among the many gems within the cathedral is the Seed of David, a fabulous triptych, created by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, which was completed in 1864. I must confess that I spent an inordinate amount of time bathing in the glow of this masterpiece. Another treat, which stirred my soul, was the exceptional performance of the Cathedral Choir. Recognised for their wonderful talent HM King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended a service, which was broadcast live world-wide.
With my insatiable thirst for art forms awakened I visited Cardiff’s National Museum, which presents a vast collection of treasures and includes historic and modern art, impressionist and applied art. The People,
Personalities and Power: Faces from Wales (1800 –2000) exhibition offers an insight into local people who have contributed to the cultural and economic life of Wales over the last two hundred years and it is absolutely riveting. I wandered around the section titled Art in the Netherlands (1500 – 1700) and spotted the masterpiece A Calm, created in 1654 by Jan van de Cappelle and I was hypnotized by the swirling hues of his ocean.
Emerging from the building and with my maritime connections aroused I decided to head for Cardiff Bay, once known as Tiger Bay. In the 1990’s Cardiff Bay Barrage was one of the largest civil engineering accomplishments in Europe and it lies across the mouth of the bay impounding the River Ely and the River Taff and creating a five hundred acre fresh-water lake with eight miles of waterfront.
Attractions around Cardiff Bay include the Senedd, which is the striking Welsh parliament building designed by Richard Rogers, the Wales Millennium Centre, which is the hub for national arts and Techniquest, a centre for science with more than a hundred interactive exhibits, which I have been reliably informed, is very popular with children.
Later, whilst relaxing in the Marriott, I decided to venture out and headed to the nearby St David’s shopping centre for a spot of retail therapy. Weighed down with bags and with my appetite raging I spotted The Ivy. I was escorted to a table and ordered the delicious lobster linguine accompanied by a glass of Chablis and I held my glass aloft and made a toast to this captivating city and to another of the city’s treasures; Dame Shirley Bassey, who was born in Cardiff and who rose from humble beginnings to conquer the music industry with her exquisite voice and exuberant performances. Her story was captured in David Arnold’s song ‘The Girl from Tiger Bay’ and the lyrics ‘There’s no denying who I am. Forever young, I will stay, the girl from Tiger Bay’.

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES WEDDING OF THE YEAR
Weddings are always special events, and watching our friends Dawn and Ashley Ward’s daughter, Taylor, exchange vows with former Manchester City player Riyad Mahrez was no exception. Having recently moved to Saudi Arabia, Taylor and Riyad chose the romantic and breathtaking Lake Como as the perfect destination to tie the knot. They invited their closest friends and family to join them for a three-day wedding extravaganza.
Nick and Royston arrived a few days early to explore and discover all the delights of Lake Como. They stayed at the luxurious Grand Hotel Victoria in Menaggio, a late 19th-century gem offering a perfect combination of fabulous shopping, Michelin-starred restaurants, a wellness spa for relaxation and Victoria Beach to boost their tans.
DAY ONE
The festivities kicked off the day before the wedding with an Arabian Nightsthemed party. The hotel gardens were transformed into an Arabic tent, and out of respect for Riyad’s culture, guests were asked to wear traditional Arabic attire. Looking stunning in their exquisite outfits, the guests enjoyed amazing Arabic cuisine and entertainment, including fire eaters, belly dancers and magicians. The evening was truly magical.
WEDDING DAY
The wedding ceremony took place at the stunning Villa Balbiano in Tremezzina, famously featured in Lady Gaga’s film House of Gucci. Situated on the waterfront with beautiful gardens, the villa boasts its own private pier and boathouse. Adorned with pink and white roses, the ceremony was held on the terrace overlooking the striking view of Lake Como. The bride looked stunning in a white lace gown, while the groom and guests donned Black Tie attire, making it a very Hollywood glamour affair.
The wedding breakfast featured traditional Italian cuisine, and live performances entertained guests throughout the day. The highlight of the evening was Leona Lewis serenading the happy couple as they took to the dance floor. Later, the DJ took over and Nick, Royston and all their friends partied the night away.
DAY THREE
The third day was all about winding down and relaxing after the big day. The dress code was chic beachwear for a stunning pool party at the villa. Guests lounged around the pool, enjoying champagne, cocktails and sharing gossip from the past few days, making it the perfect ending to this extraordinary wedding celebration. We wish this beautiful couple a lifetime of happiness.
Over the moon the announce Rory is in the finals for the prestigious British Hairdressing Awards as a nominee for Hairdresser of the Year 2024! This is a huge honour for Rory and the Team where the likes of our fabulous mentors Royston Blythe and Nick Malenko have been previous winners multiple times… so wish us luck for the finals later this year!
The salon also had some very unexpected - but incredibly heart warming - news as well. Rory has always been green fingered and our Chancellor of Wombourne and Local Parish Council came to award us with a Commendation for our floral window box displays! The Wombourne community has always been incredibly supportive so to be recognised in such a lovely way definitely invoked the true meaning of community spirit. Make sure to come and check out our displays for yourself - they truly are beautiful! And finally we want to thank everyone for their continued support and can’t wait to welcome clients, regular and new, to the salon now that the crazy Summer Holidays are over. Make sure to get your post-holiday hair booked in and we look forward to seeing you!

hearing aids - nhs or private?
It can be a really difficult decision when using the right provider for your hearing and earcare needs. There are several factors to consider.
In reality you have 3 choices;
• NHS
• Private High Street Providers
• Independent Hearing Care
NHS
We are lucky to have an NHS hearing aid service in this country but we are all aware of the pressures the NHS are under and this also affects the audiology service. NHS hearing aids are free at the point of service, including fittings, follow-up appointments, and maintenance.
The hearing aids are of a reasonable quality but tend to be older technology and the choice is very limited. The service is also being reduced in some areas now. Follow-up services and maintenance are free, including any necessary adjustments, repairs, and battery replacements. There is, however, often a wait for aftercare and the service in general
High Street Providers
Most of the branded high street providers such as Boots, Specsavers etc are either owned by or have ties with certain suppliers. This can limit the choice you are offered as they will often guide you towards their own brand technology or to those suppliers they are affiliated with They will have access to the latest technology, which might include more discreet options or higher sound quality. The price of the hearing aids will normally include fittings, follow-up appointments, and ongoing maintenance.
Access to appointments and fittings will be quicker than the NHS. Some centres may also offer ear wax removal. You may have to pay for ongoing maintenance and any necessary repairs, depending on the provider’s policy.
Always check first
Independent Hearing Care Specialists
Independent providers like our HEAR IN clinics are not tied to any manufacturer and with over 100 different hearing aids to choose from at any one time we can offer great choice.
We use only very latest in hearing aid technology including the most discreet hearing aids with Bluetooth connectivity, that are personalised to your listening needs, with a guarantee of up to 5years and lifetime of aftercare included.
We offer the gold standard in ear wax removal using ENT microscopes.
Service quality is key and our clinics are bespoke to hearing care with our clinical team all professionally trained experts supported by the friendliest receptionists guaranteed to make you feel welcome. We only do ears, nothing else!
Recommendations:
• If Budget is a Concern: NHS hearing aids are a good option. They provide good quality devices and free ongoing care.
• If Advanced Technology is a Priority: Consider private hearing aids for the latest features, excellent technology and more personalised service.
It’s also worth consulting with an audiologist to discuss your specific hearing needs and get professional advice tailored to your situation.

wolverhampton optometrist helps olympic competitors gear up for games
Optometrist and sports vision specialist, Ed Lyons, has worked with multiple sporting champions to ensure they see gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, including Matthew CowardHolley, Lucy Hall, Bryony Page and hockey umpire, Sarah Wilson.
As a Director at Flint Optometry, a group of independent practices based at Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton, Codsall and Wednesfield, Ed has carved out a niche working with elite athletes that are on the hunt for the perfect solutions to enhance both their vision and their performance.
Most recently, the independent Wolverhampton practice has been supporting a number of athletes as prepared to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Trampoline gymnast, Bryony Page, with two Olympic medals prior to the Paris games, visited the optometrists in Wolverhampton after experiencing visual difficulties during performances. Following Ed’s guidance, Bryony switched to a better prescription with a much higher performing daily disposable contact lens, as well as undertaking spatial awareness exercises.
Bryony’s triumph in winning the Gold Medal was a huge achievement and the high point of her career, leaving Flint Optometry proud to have played a role! Speaking on her experience at Flint Optometry and her decision to prioritise her vision, Bryony said: “Throughout my sporting career, including over a decade competing as an elite senior athlete, I have seen many physicians/ practitioners for various different health issues, injuries, educational and performance gain purposes.”
“Ed is easily among the best and his genuine desire to help improve my vision and sporting performance really
stood out. I really felt valued and it was great to discuss options with someone who clearly understood my point of view as an athlete wanting to achieve those marginal gains and not accept ‘just good enough’.”
Men’s trap shooter and previous Olympic bronze medallist, Matthew Coward-Holley, alongside fellow trap shooter, Lucy Hall, both visited the practice prior to the commencement of the event to prepare their vision for the razor-sharp precision required of the highly competitive sport.
As a long-standing patient, Matthew sought a pair of high quality shooting lenses, while Lucy visited Flint Optometry for the first time more recently for support with visual training and target acquisition.
As a course pioneered by Ed Lyons in practice, visual training aims to support athletes such as Lucy to improve their reaction time and peripheral vision which they can then implement as part of their training.
Speaking on the importance of eyewear and visual training in competitive sports, Ed added: “When the difference between coming first and second can be as little as a hundredth of a second or fractions of a millimetre, having that visual edge is all important. Ensuring athletes have the best possible vision can be the key factor in achieving peak performance and ultimately securing a gold medal.”
Flint & Partners are highly experienced in offering are custom solutions tailored specifically to their individual patient’s needs to offer the best possible vision solutions.
If you would like to find out more about Flint & Partners, or to book an appointment, please visit www.flintandpartners.co.uk
As we live longer, the incidence of strokes, dementia and loss of mental capacity is becoming more prevalent, with more than two million people in the UK unable to make their own decisions. Hopefully, you’ll live to a ripe old age without facing these issues. However, if you do experience any of these, it can be without warning and could be a stressful time for you and your family. Having the right measures in place can mean a much easier process when your family need to help you, causing much relief for busy family members and leaving you feeling less of a burden.
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)
This is where Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) can help, and I believe they are possibly more important than a Will, as they help you during your lifetime, if necessary. LPAs enable you to nominate people to make decisions on your behalf if you become unable to, or act for you if you are hospitalised or immobile. There are two types
of LPA: one for financial matters and one for health and welfare decisions.
My extensive experience of preparing LPAs for clients means I can help you find solutions to suit your particular circumstances, including who to choose as Attorneys, and how they should act together.
Think of LPAs like insurance; you may never need them, but if you do, and you don’t have them, the consequences can be pretty dreadful. Without an LPA, if you lose mental capacity to make decisions, somebody would need to apply to court, which is a lengthy, expensive and intrusive process for your loved ones to undertake.
So, take that first step towards reassurance and relief and contact Gavin Ward at Kenneth Jones Solicitors in Tettenhall on 01902 745773.

financial savvy after 50: five topics you can’t ignore
Pension Planning and Retirement Income
What’s the buzz?
For many, the dream of retiring comfortably is coupled with the reality of making their pension pots last. The key questions revolve around the best ways to draw income, whether to opt for an annuity or a drawdown plan, and how to balance investments for a stable yet growing income.
Why it matters
With life expectancy increasing, the prospect of living 20-30 years post-retirement is very real. Ensuring that their financial resources don’t run dry during these years is critical. People are particularly concerned about how to manage their pension withdrawals efficiently, avoiding hefty tax bills while ensuring a consistent income stream.
My thoughts
A balanced approach, combining a regular income from an annuity with the flexibility of a drawdown plan, can be a smart strategy. Diversifying investments to include a mix of equities, fixed interest, and other assets can also help hedge against market volatility and inflation. Consulting a financial adviser to tailor these strategies to individual needs and risk tolerance is advisable.
Healthcare Costs and Long-Term Care
What’s the buzz?
Healthcare costs and the potential need for long-term care are significant concerns. Many people are unsure how to plan for these expenses, which can be substantial and unpredictable. The fear of depleting their savings to pay for care is very real.
Why it matters
Quality care is expensive, and the options vary greatly. From nursing homes to in-home care, costs can quickly add up. Without proper planning, these expenses can erode savings meant for other retirement purposes. Moreover, the desire to avoid being a financial burden on their families adds to the stress.
My thoughts
Long-term care insurance can be beneficial, as premiums are lower for younger, healthier applicants. Additionally, setting aside a specific portion of savings or investments specifically for healthcare costs can provide a safety net. Exploring options like lifetime mortgages or equity release schemes can also provide additional funds if needed.
Generational Planning and Inheritance Tax
What’s the buzz?
Generational planning is a hot topic, especially when it comes to minimising inheritance tax (IHT). People are eager to find ways to pass on their wealth without a significant portion going to the taxman. They are exploring trusts, gifting strategies, and other methods to ensure their heirs benefit fully.
Why it matters
Without proper planning, estates worth more than the nil-rate band (currently £325,000 in the UK) can be taxed at 40%. This can significantly reduce the inheritance left for loved ones. Efficient estate planning can help mitigate these taxes and ensure that more of the estate goes to family and beneficiaries.
My thoughts
One effective strategy is to use the annual gift allowance (£3,000 per year) and make regular gifts out of surplus income. Setting up trusts can also be a tax-efficient way to manage assets. Seeking professional advice to
navigate the complex rules around IHT and find the best solutions for individual circumstances is essential.
Investment Strategies Post-Retirement
What’s the buzz?
Balancing risk and reward in investment portfolios postretirement is crucial. Many are cautious about taking too much risk, fearing market downturns that could wipe out their savings. At the same time, they need enough growth to combat inflation and maintain their purchasing power.
Why it matters
Retirees need a steady income to cover their living expenses, but they also need their investments to grow to ensure their money lasts. Too conservative an approach can lead to insufficient growth, while too aggressive can result in significant losses, especially in volatile markets.
My thoughts
A diversified portfolio is key. Including a mix of asset classes such as equities for growth, bonds for stability, and real estate for inflation protection can provide a balanced approach. Regularly reviewing and rebalancing the portfolio to align with changing risk tolerance and financial needs is also important. Using a financial adviser to guide these decisions can help navigate the complexities of the investment landscape.
Downsizing and Property Decisions
What’s the buzz?
Deciding whether to downsize, sell the family home, or invest in property is a major consideration. This decision involves emotional and practical aspects, such as leaving a home full of memories or finding a new place that suits their current lifestyle better. Why it matters
Property is often the largest asset for many people. Making the right decision can free up capital, reduce living expenses, and potentially provide additional income through investments or buy-to-let properties. However, the timing and market conditions can significantly impact the benefits of these moves.
My thoughts
Careful consideration of the local property market and personal circumstances is essential. Downsizing can reduce maintenance costs and free up equity, but it’s important to account for all associated costs such as moving expenses and stamp duty. For those considering buy-to-let, understanding the responsibilities and potential risks of being a landlord is crucial. Engaging with a property professional can help assess the best options.
In conclusion, navigating these financial planning topics requires a blend of foresight, strategic thinking, and professional advice. For those over 50, ensuring a comfortable and secure retirement involves making informed decisions about pensions, healthcare, estate planning, investments, and property. While the landscape can seem daunting, taking proactive steps now can pave the way for a financially stress-free future.

how will i support myself after divorce?
Going through a divorce can be an extremely overwhelming and stressful experience. As well as the emotional burden, often people are left wondering how they will be able to financially support themselves on one income.
When looking at how to divide the assets upon divorce, consideration must be given to both parties housing needs (including those of any dependent children). Whether there is a disparity in income will also need to be considered as well as a list of other factors, which can be found under s25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973.
If you are unable to support yourself, it is possible for the Court to order your spouse to make payments to you after the divorce. The amount and duration of these payments would be dependent on your circumstances and not everybody will be entitled to this.

Understanding Power of Attorney and Probate.
A question I am often asked is, “I have power of attorney for a loved one. Do I need probate if they die?”
The answer is likely yes. Power of Attorney allows you to manage their affairs while they are alive, but this authority ends when they pass away. After this point, the responsibility for administering their estate falls to their nearest living relative or the executors named in their will. However, for them to fulfill this task, they must first prove that they have the legal authority to do so. Banks will need to be contacted, assets distributed, direct debits and standing orders cancelled, and bills paid. To carry out these tasks, you must have the legal authority, known as probate.
Can I obtain probate without the help of a professional?
The short answer is yes, but it’s not always a
straightforward process and can lead to complications down the line. It’s crucial that each step of this legal process is completed correctly and in the right order. The probate process can be complex and daunting, and mistakes are often made, leading to delays and potential penalties.
Dealing with the administration of a loved one’s estate and fulfilling their final wishes is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. At Evergreen Wills, our team can guide you smoothly through the steps of obtaining probate, ensuring that everything is in place during this difficult time.

back to school with first stop!
The kids going back to school can mean only one thing at First Stop Wolverhampton… …Bring your car in for a ‘school run vehicle safety check’ – for free!
The popular Chapel Ash garage is urging motorists to pop in for a complimentary once-over, so that those journeys with the little ones can be completed smoothly and safely.
Owner Simon Bennett said: “We’ll be offering free checks for everyone, to check for any notable faults or issues which we can then advise on. We’ll also be showing motorists what to look out for and how to check their tyres themselves in the future. For the sake of a few minutes, it’s the least we could do.”
A healthy car makes for some much needed peace of mind and motorists can be reassured that everything will
be in good working order when travelling from ‘A’ to ‘B’, once a pit stop has been made at First Stop.
The checks include a look at tyres, lights and bulbs, brakes, battery, alternator, oil levels, washers, wipers and antifreeze – all of which will be checked thoroughly.
Simon added: “Our trained technicians will give your vehicle the once-over as a complimentary free service and if any issues are detected, they’ll be communicated clearly along with recommended next steps should you choose to follow our advice.”

suzuki swift hybrid
If you ask most people they will think of Suzuki as being primarily motorcycle producers but like Mr Kipling they do make exceedingly good cars and the Suzuki Swift is one of that category and now in the 4th generation of the product the hybrid technology has been incorporated in what has always been a smart, well stocked 5-seater family car, writes Bob Hickman.
The Suzuki Swift is available in just 2 options, either a Motion trim or as in the case of my test car, the Ultra the higher spec. The range start at a very modest £18,699 and the Ultra is £19,799, and in this day and age with higher prices it does represent extremely good value for money.
The Swift Hybrid is powered by a frugal 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine producing 82bhp.
The low CO2 emissions of 99 g/km will help to keep that naughty road tax on the low side.
It was surprising to sit in the Swift and be transported back, the test car had a 5-speed manual gearbox and an old-fashioned handbrake. The modern technology abounds you do not need the key, you just press a button and there is a plethora of infotainment contained within the central binnacle. I have to admit to finding some of it a little difficult and at the end of a week I never did manage to find out how to turn off certain driver aids.
The Swift at all times proved to be a pleasant companion, and it did exactly what it said on the box. It is a family saloon not a sporty car, in the company of the Swift I did a lot of motorways, A roads and some twisty curvy B roads, in addition to quite a bit of town centre driving and car parking. The 0-60 in marginally over 12 seconds, you would never get too excited about, and a top speed where legal of 103mph is more than sufficient.
Passengers at all times had plenty of space, the driver had multi-adjustment in the seat, and a steering wheel that only allowed a up or down movement and not in and out, but having said that head, leg and shoulder room were acceptable and 2 adult passengers could quite easily be accommodated in the rear of the vehicle.
Boot space was not over generous, I would say it was more compact, but you could drop the rear seats if you so wish to add to the extra luggage capacity.
As with all vehicles nowadays there is a huge list of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, and the dreaded lane keeping assistance, there is also but I’m not sure how it works, a weave alert so
that if you became a little drowsy after a long drive it brings it to your attention. I particularly like that there are cameras and parking aids on the vehicle, it does help although it is not a huge vehicle.
One feature that quite often overlooked by purchasers is what the vehicle will be worth in a few years’ time and the Suzuki has been given quite good residual values by CAP HPI. It is suggesting that it might still be worth 52% of its initial value when it is 4 years old and another quite interesting and a good feature is the low cost of ownership is improved with up to 7-years warranty. It is one of those warranties that ties you in to servicing so the normal warranty is extended to 7 years as long as each year you have a service done by an accredited Suzuki dealership.
The list of equipment and features fills a whole A4 page of information and it really does cover a lot, from a safety perspective there are 6 air bags, driver, front passenger, seat belt pretensioners are included, side impact protection, there is a tremendous amount of equipment.
The economics of the Swift were exceptional, there were times when it was suggested that we were doing 70mpg, and at the end of a week in company with the delightful little Swift, the computer suggested that we averaged 54mpg which I think is exceptional.
honda civic advance
2.0i-mde cvt
I have always been a Honda fan, I have owned numerous Honda Motor bikes and currently own a Honda Jazz as the family car and even my lawnmower is a Honda, writes Bob Hickman.
The Civic is just one of those vehicles that over the years it has been in production always rewards and is always one of those vehicles that you know it is reliable, performs well and without doubt has been part of our lives for a long time.
The latest incarnation of the Civic is a self-charging hybrid electric, now the 11h generation The vehicle has a 2-litre petrol engine, which is combined with an electric motor system, the engine is also a generator for the electric motor, it uses petrol power but when you are light on the throttle it then allows you to use electric power. We are used to this system on the Jazz, in and around town you utilise power from the combination of engine and or batteries and at times you look down at the dashboard and you see a little symbol that indicates you are running on pure electric power. Take your foot off the accelerator and the engine then will recharge the batteries and increase the range.
You can choose as a driver which particular mode you wish between Eco, Sport but I always tend to leave it Eco because after all that is what a hybrid is all about.
The driving dynamics of the Civic are excellent, with not too much road noise. From a driving perspective the driver’s position is multi-adjustable and was easy for any size of person to get themselves comfortable. Inside the car, there is plethora of electronic gadgets and gismos to help keep you safe or in my case to annoy me, trying to take over my driving style. It is quite possible to turn off some of these features like the lane divert, but you have to do it eery time you stop or switch the engine off, as it always defaults back to being on.
The all-new Civic delivers refined and somewhat exhilarating performance, the design is wonderful. The latest model has a revised chassis and this has made the driving better without compromising comfort.
The engine itself is a 1933cc petrol with 4 cylinders, it runs on unleaded petrol and the emissions are quoted
as being as low as 95g/km. Honda suggest that a 0-60 could be possible in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 112mph. They claim in the combined fuel is 56.5mpg and during a week and nearly 300 miles of driving, I certainly achieved that figure according to the computer.
As you would expect in this day and age there is an awful lot infotainment system on big screens in front of you, easily visible, what I did like with the Honda was the fact that a good many of the controls are still controlled and retained and utilised by the steering wheel, so none of this annoying taking your eyes too far off the road to operate equipment in the vehicle.
The vehicle as tested in the Sonic Grey Pearl colour which really didn’t do anything to heighten the enjoyment of the vehicle when you look at some of the other wonderful colours in the Honda stable. It had an on the road price of £39,805. It comes with a 5-year, 90,000 miles warranty, which should give you peace of mind whilst in your ownership.
