Summer is the perfect time to transform your outdoor space into a stunning oasis for living, entertaining and creating lasting memories with family and friends. Whether you have a sprawling backyard, a cosy patio or a charming balcony, there are endless possibilities to design a beautiful and functional outdoor area. From vibrant decor and comfortable furniture to innovative lighting and lush greenery, here are some gorgeous ideas to inspire you in creating the ultimate summer retreat right at home. Get ready to embrace the season and enjoy every moment in your newly transformed outdoor sanctuary!
Here are my top Trends to embrace for summer 2024!
1. EARTHY COLOURS
Earthy colours are making their appearance outside. Warm tones of brown and beige have become widely used in outdoor lounging and dining furniture. These colours will certainly add depth and warmth to any space. For a pop of colour, olive green will be a popular colour choice, emphasising elements of nature. This blend of natural tones not only harmonises with the outdoor environment but also creates a serene and stylish setting for relaxation and social gatherings. Whether you’re updating your patio furniture or redesigning your entire outdoor space, incorporating these trending colours will help you create a chic and comfortable environment that reflects the beauty of nature.

ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS
Indoor-outdoor living is not a new idea; however, it has greatly influenced the latest trends in furniture and how people live. The concept of indoor-outdoor living is all about seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a harmonious flow that enhances both areas.
Bi-fold or sliding doors are a common feature of homes that embrace this trend, allowing for a natural flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. These doors can be fully opened to merge the living room with the patio, creating an expansive area for entertaining or relaxing. The unobstructed views and easy access to outdoors, makes it feel like an extension of the home.
MODERN OUTDOOR SHELTERS
Extend the space with modern outdoor shelters like aluminium pergolas. These structures provide shade and protection whilst maintaining an open feel. They can be equipped with retractable canopies allowing you to control the amount of sunlight and airflow. Aluminium pergolas are sleek and durable, adding a contemporary touch to your outdoor area.
By integrating these elements, you can create a cohesive living space that blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors, offering a versatile and enjoyable environment for family and friends to gather.
3. OUTDOOR LIGHTING AND HEATING
Outdoor heating and lighting are essential accessories that provide warmth and a welcoming glow during dark evenings, especially during autumn and winter. Incorporating these features into your outdoor space ensures you can make the most of your outdoor furniture and area all year round.
HEATING SOLUTIONS
The focus will shift from gas standalone fire pits to electric patio heaters in 2024. Electric patio heaters come in various unique shapes and designs, making it easier to accommodate gardens and patios of all sizes. These heaters are efficient, environmentally friendly and offer a modern look.
Adding heating to your outdoor furniture setup can significantly extend the usability of your space. For instance, styling an aluminium pergola with a hanging patio heater provides warmth while maintaining a sleek, contemporary aesthetic. This combination ensures comfort and style, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor living area even in cooler weather.
By integrating these lighting and heating solutions, you can create a cosy, inviting and functional outdoor space that you and your guests can enjoy throughout the year.
LIGHTING TRENDS
Minimalist lighting will be a popular trend in 2024, moving away from the more decorative festoon lighting of previous years. Wall lights are a simple yet effective way to enhance the appearance of entranceways or garden walls. Up and down wall lights are particularly trending, offering a modern, streamlined design that adds a sophisticated touch to your outdoor space. These lights not only illuminate your area but also highlight architectural features and create an inviting ambiance.
Outdoor furniture is constantly evolving and I believe acacia wood and rope furniture will be prominent in outdoor furniture trends in 2024. The simple and rustic look of these materials gives off a relaxed bohemian beach feel; just imagine lounging in the sun by the ocean with a cocktail. Blending acacia wood and rope adds both character and charm to your outdoor space, creating an inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment.
ROPE FURNITURE
Rope furniture combines durability with a unique, textured appearance that stands out in any outdoor setting. Its lightweight nature makes it easy to rearrange and store, while its natural look harmonises beautifully with garden greenery and other outdoor elements.
ACACIA WOOD
Acacia wood is known for its robustness and rich, warm tones. Its natural resilience to the elements makes it an excellent choice for outdoor furniture. The combination of acacia wood frames with rope accents creates a visually appealing contrast and a comfortable, stylish seating arrangement.
5. MODULAR SETS
Casual dining sets, and modular sofas in particular, will be in high demand this season. Multi-purpose outdoor furniture allows you to relax, eat, and host guests all in one spot, maximizing the use of your outdoor areas. Modular designs offer versatility and functionality to suit any space, regardless of shape and size. Rising tables, reclining chairs, and interchangeable sofa pieces are standout features of modular furniture that elevate your outdoor experience.
Modular sets are designed to adapt to your needs, whether you’re hosting a dinner party, enjoying a quiet afternoon or creating a cosy lounge area. The ability to rearrange and reconfigure pieces ensures that your outdoor space can transform to meet any occasion.
6. OUTDOOR DINING
Sit and eat outside whenever summer weather allows with a hard-wearing but stylish garden table and chairs set. Start the day with a coffee and croissant outdoors, break up a work-from-home day with an al fresco lunch and enjoy post-work sundowners on Friday evenings to mark the end of a busy week.
Dining Options
Choose from a variety of dining setups to suit your style and space:
• Dining Table and Chair Sets: These sets provide a classic and cohesive look, perfect for formal meals and casual gatherings alike.
• Colourful Garden Armchairs: Consider adding a pop of colour and comfort with vibrant armchairs, ideal for lounging and socialising.
• Picnic Table and Benches: A picnic table offers a rustic charm and ample seating, great for family meals and larger groups.
Enhancements
Make each outdoor dining experience special with thoughtful details:
• Picnicware and Outdoor Glasses: Use colorful picnicware and durable outdoor glasses to add a festive touch and ensure safety.
• Fresh Flowers and Nibbles: Enhance your table with a vase of fresh flowers and a selection of snacks during weekends.
• Barbecue or Pizza Oven: Fire up the barbecue or heat up the pizza oven to enjoy delicious, freshly prepared meals in your outdoor space.
• Outdoor Fairy Lights: String up fairy lights to create a magical ambiance for evening gatherings, adding a warm and inviting glow.

Long sunny days, ice creams, walks on the beach and fun with friends, summer delights that we and our dogs dream of. But this can also be a hazardous time for our precious ones, doggie dangers lurk in the summer!
Dogs can overheat when it’s too hot so it’s best to go for your walk early in the morning or late evening. Check the pavement to ensure that it isn’t too hot for your lovely one to walk on, a dog’s pads are sensitive and every year many poor souls end up at the Vets suffering with burnt paws. Ideally take a water bottle out with you so that your dog can have little sips of water if they want them. Ensure that you avoid going out with your dog all together between 12 and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest and if it’s too hot at other times then don’t walk at all.
Never leave your dog in a car on a warm day even if the window is open or the car is parked in the shade because this is still dangerous for a dog, they can overheat very quickly. Certain breeds of dogs are more at risk of heat stroke especially brachycephalic breeds (flat faced) like English Bulldogs and Pugs. Puppies and old dogs, long haired dogs, dark coated dogs, overweight dogs and those with medical conditions are also amongst those that are likely to suffer more easily so take care not to walk when it’s too hot.
Many of us will be enjoying tasty treats in the warm weather but take care if you are sharing them with your dogs. There may be a hidden danger lurking called Xylitol, a sweetener that is used in many foods including peanut butter, yogurt, sweets, ice cream, cakes and
jams. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and can cause liver failure and ultimately death. What is most concerning is that it is being used more and more commonly in peanut butter and other nut butters, it has several names, such as E967 and Meso-Xylitol so if in doubt don’t give it to your furry friend. A lot of pet parents use peanut butter in toys for their pets, so it is imperative that you check the ingredients to ensure that it is safe. Why not use a different kind of healthy treat in their toy, you could mash up some boiled egg or some nice cooked white fish or chicken, don’t forget to remove all bones you don’t want them choking and thoroughly wash their toys after they have finished.
Lurking in the long grass may be another summer danger! Ticks can be found all year round but summer is the most common time to for dogs to pick them up when they are racing through grass, shrubs or even piles of leaves. Tick bites can be uncomfortable and in unfortunate cases the dog can have an allergic reaction or worse contract tick transmitting diseases such as Lyme disease. It’s best practice to thoroughly brush your dog and then check them over after a walk especially under their front and back legs as well as in between their toes. More obscure places to look are their ears, eyelids and tails. If you find a tick it needs to be removed carefully, ask your Vet for advice if necessary.
Enjoy the lovely warm days but keep a look out for the doggie dangers that lurk this summer!
Always contact your veterinarian if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them.

Irresponsible hero, Wade Wilson/Deadpool, is tasked with an impossible task that affects our reality and many others collectively. Along for the ride is Hugh Jackman’s triumphant return as Wolverine. The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien (1979) franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Frequent horror director, Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead & Don’t Breathe), takes the reins whilst Ridley Scott, who directed the original, serves as producer.
TWISTERS
DIRECTOR: LEE ISAAC CHUNG

Twisters is a current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster, Twister, from the producers of the Jurassic Park, Jason Bourne, and Indiana Jones series. An epic studio disaster movie made only for the summer. This sequel is an adrenaline-pumping, seat-gripping, big-screen thrill ride where two opposing forces try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.

roast salmon fillet
with caesar salad
I love a classic Caesar salad with grilled chicken breast but this version replaces the chicken with roast salmon fillet and makes a great starter or light lunch.
INGREDIENTS:
400g of skinless boneless salmon fillet
2 gem lettuce
150g of mayonnaise
16 white anchovies
1 garlic clove
1 lemon
Black pepper mill
1 thick slice of cibatta or foccacia
Parmesan wegde
Olive oil
EQUIPMENT
Chopping board
Sharp cooks knife
Peeler
Mixing bowl
Food processor
Baking sheet /tray
Food proccessor with blade attachment
MAKES PREP TIME COOKING

PORTIONS MINUTES MINUTES
METHOD:
5
PLATING MINUTES
Preheat your oven to 210 ˚c. Cut the salmon into equal size squares and place on parchment paper on a baking sheet and season with maldon sea salt and milled pepper ready to roast.
Cut the stalk off the gem lettuce and peel away the layers into cold water to rinse off any debris or dirt then dry off and set aside in a large mixing bowl. Cut the bread into medium size croutons, drizzle with a little olive oil and dry out in the oven on 140˚c until crunchy all the way through. ( do this before turning the oven up to cook the salmon).
Place 8 anchovies with any liquid into the food processor with garlic clove, zest and juice of half a lemon, 100g of mayonnaise, a few twists of black pepper with a good grating of parmesan cheese (50g). (I like lots of parmesan personally but use as much as you like.
Roast the salmon mini fillets in the oven for about 12 minutes then take out the oven.
If making as a starter, place the salmon fillet over the top of 2 leaves on the plate then garnish with anchovies, using the peeler to make your parmesan shavings and place over salmon, add the dressing and then crush some croutons over the top.
To make as a salad for a light lunch simply just toss the leaves in a bowl with the dressing, anchovies, shaved parmesan and croutons then plate up and pull the salmon apart into flecks and drop over the salad.
SERVE WITH
Serve with a cold crisp glass of white wine.

Bake at 160˚c in a fan oven for 25 minutes then allow to cool and place in the fridge for a few hours so you can easily remove from the tin and cut into rectangles.
Whilst the brownie is baking take 250g of mascarpone and 125g of cherry jam and simply just combine the two together in a mixing bowl.
Once the brownie is set and cut into rectangles just place on your plates and top with the cherry mascarpone and garnish with fresh cherries.
A time to reflect and look forward to the new academic year! WGHS has been bustling with activity over the past few months!
APRIL In April, we opened our doors to welcome prospective students and their families to explore our school, meet our dedicated staff, and get a glimpse of the exceptional educational experience we offer here at WGHS.
MAY/JUNE As well as marking the beginning of exam season, May also brought with it popular familiarisation sessions, where hundreds of parents eagerly signed up to gain a deeper understanding of how our entrance test and admissions process works. These sessions proved invaluable in providing insights and support to families interested in joining the WGHS family.
JULY We had the pleasure of meeting our new Year 7 students in early July. The induction was a two-day event where new students experienced a day in the life of a Year 7, -a crucial step in preparing and instilling confidence in these young girls as they make the leap from primary to secondary education.
Looking
forward!
As the end of July approaches, the entire school is eagerly looking forward to Celebration Week. It promises to be a week full of fun, and, of course, celebration for both staff and students across all year groups.
AUGUST Our wonderful Year 11s and 13s having sat their exams and are now gearing up to receive their GCSE and A Level results. As we bid farewell, we wish them the very best of luck in the next chapter of their educational journey and are confident their hard work and dedication will be rewarded. We eagerly await celebrating their achievements and successes with them on results day.
SEPTEMBER We also extend our best wishes to all the girls who will be sitting the entrance exam in September and look forward to welcoming them to the WGHS family. We are committed to nurturing each student’s potential and providing a supportive and enriching environment where they can thrive academically, socially, and personally. Here’s to another successful year ahead!
together at wrekin and old hall
An educational trust in Shropshire has seen its prep and senior school together on the sports field, in its musical ensembles and in the art studio, with a joint ski trip to Austria now planned for next year.
Wrekin College and Old Hall School, which together educate pupils aged from 4-18 years, have launched a range of bespoke experiences for youngsters offering mentorship opportunities, collaborative projects and dedicated sessions using specialist facilities.
Pupils at Wrekin have helped run coaching sessions alongside teaching staff in a variety of sports for younger pupils at Old Hall.
The Music Department staged an ambitious workshop for young musicians including from Old Hall who were joined by Wrekin players for the event which culminated in a concert for parents.
The group used the Wrekin College Music School which has a double-height rehearsal space for ensembles and individual practice rooms.
Year five pupils at Old Hall were also given a talk and tour at the Wrekin College’s GCSE and A Level art exhibition, meeting some of the artists behind the pieces on display.
Now the Trust has announced a joint ski trip next Easter which will involve pupils in years five and six at Old Hall and years seven and eight at Wrekin.
Toby Spence, Executive Head at the Wrekin Old Hall Trust, said it was wonderful to see the partnerships developing between children in different year groups across the Trust and the opportunities it was creating to hone vital life skills.
“It is very important that the Trust shows the older pupils how they can be positive role models and help them
practically develop their leadership skills,” added Mr Spence.
“At the same time we also want to inspire young children at Old Hall and not only give them regular access to specialist facilities across our campus, but come up with innovative ways to ensure it makes a real difference,” he added.
“Wrekin pupils really enjoy taking on the mentorship role and I am proud that in all of these scenarios, they have shown how much you can achieve when you look to give your best in all aspects of school life.”
Mrs Anna Karacan, Head at Old Hall, said making more use of the specialist facilities within the Trust had been one of her key aims for Old Hall pupils when she first took up the role in September 2022.
She added that it had been overwhelmingly positive to also see how the Wrekin pupils had helped to bring those facilities bursting to life for the younger children.
“They have really loved these extra sessions and it is so empowering for them to be given extra help and advice on school from a pupil who has made that transition to senior school already and is settled and working well,” she said.
“I have seen it add a little more confidence and excitement around their own move which for some of them is coming up in September.”
These initiatives at the school have proved such a resounding success the schools have joined forces to run a ski trip next Easter with more than 100 children going. All places were taken within days of the trip being announced with a waiting list now in place.

the charming and captivating city of rotterdam
By Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist
Rotterdam, considered the ‘second capital’ of the Netherlands, attracts hordes of visitors drawn to the positive ‘vibe’ of this contemporary city. Those fortunate visitors are amply rewarded with an intriguing insight into Dutch maritime history and presented with an enviable opportunity to take a fascinating glimpse into a colourful kaleidoscope of culture.
Early records show that Rotterdam was subjected to regular flooding and several dams and dikes were hastily built. In 1270 the construction of a major dam on the river Rotte resulted in large groups of people settling on and around the riverbanks and the area began to prosper.
Seventy years later, William II, Count of Holland and Zeeland, and brother in law of Edward III, granted Rotterdam its city status and only a decade later, a shipping canal was completed, which provided access to larger towns and trade quickly increased. The maritime trading routes to England and Germany were then established and Rotterdam became a strategic port for the Dutch East India Company.
In 1872, a shipping canal, named the Nieuwe Waterweg, was completed and Rotterdam benefitted greatly, as this canal was, and is, the primary access route to the Europoort of Rotterdam, now considered to be the busiest port in the world. The river Rhine and the river Meuse connect Europoort to Germany’s Rurh area, Switzerland, Belgium and France and to Antwerp via the Sheldt Rhine canal.
For more information on the city’s maritime history I visited the Rotterdam Maritime Museum; founded by Prince Henry of the
Netherlands in 1873, it is located on Leuvehaven. Permanent exhibits include the Masterpiece Collection, featuring the Mataró; the oldest model ship in Europe, which dates back more than six hundred years. I viewed the fascinating collection of East India Company charts, which remained in England for three centuries and were purchased by the museum in 2006. A very popular attraction is Professor Splash; giving ‘the little ones’ the chance to learn about life and work on a number of different vessels and their undivided attention will be drawn to a number of activities including sorting fish, loading and unloading cargo, navigating, dealing with a ‘fire’ onboard and the sudden outbreak of scurvy! ; The delightful squeals of the children and the ‘grown ups’ is wonderfully uplifting and it’s an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
Feeling peckish after all that arduous activity, I climbed on board the bright red painted Vessel 11, which was once a British lightship in service at Morecambe Bay and is now docked within walking distance to the Rotterdam Maritime Museum. Purchased by a Dutch entrepreneur, the vessel was completely restored and with the removal of the bulkheads and machinery, space was created for a restaurant and bar, a reception area and living quarters.
The current resident owners, a charming Dutch/English couple, have opened a very popular British gastro pub, which presents an excellent English menu including a delicious Sunday roast, bangers n’ mash and shepherd’s pie and the hand pumped ‘Vessel 11’ ale, brewed specifically for the gastro pub by Kaapse Brouwers, is the perfect accompaniment.
As I disembarked from the vessel I decided to make my way towards Erasmusbrug, the combined bascule and cablestayed bridge, which is 802 metres in length, 33.8 metres in width and it features an asymmetrical pylon reaching 139
Skyline courtesy Gerhard van Roon + Kunst en Vliegwerk
metres in height. Locally known as ‘the swan’, the bridge spans the Nieuwe Maas, connects the north and south of the city and carries four traffic lanes, two tram tracks, two cycle lanes and two pavements. It is part of Rotterdam’s logo and quite simply glorious.
Re invigorated I decided to take part in a Rotterdam shopping extravaganza and headed for Coolsingel, only a twenty minute stroll away and I passed by the imposing City Hall. Dating back to 1915, the foundation stone was laid by Queen Wilhelmina and it is one of Rotterdam’s landmarks. I then took a wander around De Bijenkorf, an enormous department store crammed with fashions, lingerie, cosmetics and a wonderful perfumery. I was easily persuaded to part with more than a few Euros.
For those of us who are art lovers, Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, located on Museumpark, presents a collection of 145,000 pieces and includes works by Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Frans Hals, Van Gogh and Kandinsky. One of the most intriguing exhibits is ‘A day in the life of Odilia Beck’, a fascinating snapshot of Dutch life in the 17th century. Another masterpiece, an oil sketch by Rubens, which is simply magnificent, is The Unification of England and Scotland, was designed for a very large ceiling in Banqueting House in Whitehall.
Another treat is the Chabot Museum, which is housed in a beautiful white villa, also located in the Museumpark and just a short hop away from the Boijmans Van Beuningen. Built in 1938 as a private property, the villa houses an extensive collection of exhibits by the very talented Dutch painter and sculptor Hendrikus Chabot.
Feeling a trifle weary and seeking a high end hotel in the centre of the city I opted to stay at the Rotterdam Marriott located on Weena. Accommodations are spacious, comfortable and feature contemporary furnishings. I was escorted to an airy one bedroom executive suite measuring 69 sqm and the marble bathroom with its separate bathtub for a soak in evening and a rejuvenating shower for the morning was just the ticket. My executive suite included access to the M Club lounge and I made full use of the complimentary buffet breakfast, complimentary light snacks throughout the day and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres in the evening.
I decided to dine in-house and headed for The Millèn, which offers a new monthly menu of distinctive dishes with cosmopolitan flavours. I ordered the succulent sautéed scallop accompanied by a chilled glass of house white followed by the most delicious blood orange with white chocolate crèmeux, kataifi, timut pepper and blood orange ice cream. The Millèn offers a first class dining experience and each of my dishes were served with aplomb.
Up with the larks following a deep and restful slumber I hopped on the number eight electric tram from Rotterdam Centraal and in less than ten minutes I arrived in Oostkousdijk a stone’s throw from Delfshaven. This charming picturesque area of Rotterdam was once part of Delft and is known for its links to the Pilgrim Fathers, who settled in Delftshaven prior to their journey to North America.
Delftshaven was also a hub for the Dutch East India Company and as I wandered around the courtyards, I admired the abundance of historic buildings and the relaxed pace of river-side life reflected by the series of tranquil canals and waterways. I joined the locals in a waterway café, ordered a glass of chilled ale and made a toast to the charming and captivating Rotterdam.

give your hearing a ‘sporting chance’
With a great range of spectator sports happening this summer it could just be the right time to get your ears ‘sport ready’ for 2024.
Sporting events are exhilarating, full of dynamic sounds that contribute to the overall experience—the roar of the crowd, the commentary, and the game’s action. For those with hearing loss, these sounds might be challenging to appreciate fully. Here are some tips to help you enjoy sporting events with better hearing
Prepare in advance
Before attending sporting events, have your hearing checked by a professional. This ensures you know your hearing levels and can get appropriate recommendations for hearing aids or other devices.
If attending a major sporting event choose your seats wisely if possible. Keep away from loudspeakers as this can help minimize background noise
Ensure your hearing aids are fully charged or have fresh batteries before heading to the event. Modern hearing aids have features like noise reduction and directional microphones that can help focus on specific sounds.
If you’re watching your favourite sport on tv then an assisted listening device such as a tv streamer will really help. Alternatively, if you are using an ipad the sound can be streamed directly to your hearing aids providing a clearer audio experience!
Let your friends or family know about your hearing needs. They can help relay important information or commentary that you might miss.
Pay attention to the scoreboard, video screens, and other visual displays that provide information about the game.
Post-Event Care
After the event, give your ears a break to recover from the loud environment. This is especially important if you are experiencing temporary hearing fatigue.
Check and clean your hearing aids or ALDs after the event to ensure they remain in good working condition.
If you missed key moments during the live event, watch replays at home with subtitles or closed captioning enabled.
Follow the event on social media or dedicated sports apps that provide live updates, commentary, and detailed analyses.
By preparing in advance and utilizing the available resources and technologies, you can enhance your experience and fully immerse yourself in the excitement of sporting events, regardless of hearing challenges. Enjoying the game is about more than just seeing it—it’s about feeling the energy and hearing the sounds that make the experience complete.

In the world of sports, every millisecond counts, and clarity of vision can be the defining factor between victory and defeat. Flint Optometry has become the beacon for athletes striving to elevate their performance through exceptional vision care. Under the expert guidance of Director and Optometrist Ed Lyons, who has a passion for sports vision, the practice has garnered attention not just locally, but from athletes as far as Mexico and the UAE.
Sports Glasses
Flint Optometry offers a range of sports glasses tailored to meet the diverse needs of sporting individuals across various disciplines, whether they compete competitively or enjoy sport as a pastime.
For example, for runners, sports glasses offer more than just protection from the elements; they ensure clear and unobstructed vision on varied terrain, allowing for those crucial adjustments that keep speed and safety in perfect harmony.
In shooting sports, where precision is everything, specialised lenses can protect whilst enhancing contrast and clarity, ensuring that targets stand out against backgrounds. Whether clay shooting or archery, having the right glasses can transform performance.
Cyclists, too, benefit immensely from sports glasses. With the wind rushing by at high speeds, with the constant threat of debris or insects, clear and secure vision is nonnegotiable.
Contact Lenses: The Invisible Advantage
While sports glasses offer a myriad of benefits, Flint Optometry also provides an alternative for those who may find them a hindrance - contact lenses. Contact lenses are a viable option for those seeking unobstructed peripheral vision and the freedom to move without the worry of frames slipping or fogging up.
Contact lenses can be particularly advantageous in contact sports or activities requiring helmets and other headgear. Football players, for example, can avoid the risk of glasses breaking during high-impact plays. Those
who enjoy motorcycling needn’t worry about having to find a spectacle frame which will fit uncomfortably under a helmet when contact lenses are an option.
Children and Sports Vision
A full range of protective eyewear is also available for children. When consulting for a club or sporting association, Flints work closely with coaching staff and provide a detailed report about each athlete’s visual status along with recommendations as to possible treatment and visual management programs.
Sports Vision Consultation
For those seeking a more in-depth visual assessment, a sports vision consultation may be appropriate. A typical Sports Vision Consultation for a single player is a twohour one-to-one session with Ed Lyons.
Starting with a high-quality enhanced examination, the consultation then builds on this with additional features including contrast sensitivity, depth perception, focusing speed, perception span, multiple object tracking, reaction time, target acquisition and gaze tracking.
Flint and Partners Optometrists have invested heavily in our Sports Vision service and were delighted to be awarded Sports Vision Practice of The Year at the Optician Awards.
Come and visit us
Flint Optometry’s expertise in sports vision isn’t just about prescribing lenses; it’s about understanding the unique visual demands of each sport and tailoring solutions that enhance performance. Whether through the precision of sports glasses or the versatility of contact lenses, we are dedicated to helping everyone from athletes to recreational sports players see the world—and their goals—more clearly.
The Game Fair 2024
This year, Ed and other members of the Flint team at Blenheim Palace’s Game Fair. The stand is sure to be bustling with individuals looking to secure sports glasses, test out new lens tints and speak with eyewear experts, all whilst in a beautiful location.
estate planning
Estate planning is the process of anticipating and arranging, during a person’s life, for the management and disposal of that person’s estate during the person’s life, in the event the person becomes incapacitated and after death.
What is an ‘estate’
Your estate consists of everything you own, for example your car, home, other property, savings accounts and investments, life insurance, furniture and antiquities and other personal possessions.
Good estate planning involves planning in advance of death by naming the people or organisations e.g. charities that you may want to receive some of your estate after you die. Planning early can make it easier to carry out your plan later.
What is a Will?
A Will is a legal document in which a person (known as the testator) directs how his or her estate is distributed after their death.
Making a will is the only way to be certain that your wishes will be met after you die, meaning it is one of the most important things you can do.
Wills and estate planning can be broken down into four elements:
- Writing a Will, making executors, family members and friends aware of it.
- Make a comprehensive list of your assets and any debts. This should include your property assets, material assets savings and investments which you will leave behind.
- Planning and/or recording cash gifts you plan to give to protect against inheritance tax.
- Making provision for funeral expenses and outlining your wishes so that family and friends can make arrangements accordingly.
Benefits of a Will
These are some of the key benefits of having your own Will: You have an executor - You appoint can executor(s) or executrix(s) to administer your estate. This allows you to choose a person or people that you trust to administer your assets in accordance with your wishes after you die.
Choose your burial preference – Whether you prefer burial or cremation your Will is your opportunity to set out your preference. If you prefer cremation you can set out where you would like your ashes scattered. If you have secured a burial plot you can specify where you want to be buried.
Protect your children – If you have children, it is likely you will want to name someone to act as guardian. If you do not name a guardian then the government may get involved and your wishes may not be followed. Always secure the agreement of anyone named to act as a guardian before committing it to your Will.
Distributing your estate to your children – You can set out specific assets or gifts of money which you want to leave to specific children.
Protecting your grandchildren – By having a Will you can ensure that your estate can be distributed to your grandchildren in the event that your children die before you.
Protecting the family business, antiquities and heirlooms - A family business or heirloom may not be able to stay in your family if you were to die, and it may be necessary to liquidate the assets.
When there is something of significant value like a business or antiques it is so important to plan ahead to avoid potential conflicts.
Your beneficiaries – Without a Will, you will be unable to specify which person(s) will benefit (beneficiaries) or persons to exclude from your estate.
Inheritance tax
It is, however, important to remember that estates worth over £325,000 are subject to inheritance tax. Inheritance tax applies to property, possessions and other financial assets left after you die.
The current rate of inheritance tax is charged at 40%. We can help you maximise tax allowances to ensure that your estate is as tax efficient as possible for your beneficiaries. How much does a Will cost?
This varies depending on the complexities of your estate and whether this includes assets abroad. Typically the average Will costs between £150 - £250 plus VAT, costs for more complex Wills are quoted on a bespoke basis.
safeguarding your legacy: understanding inheritance tax in the uk
Inheriting money or property from a loved one can be a comforting reminder of their love and support. However, navigating Inheritance Tax (IHT) can add a layer of complexity to the process. Fear not, if you understand the subject of IHT and the strategies to minimise its impact on your estate, you will be better placed to make decisions on how to transition your wealth to the next generation as smoothly as possible.
What is Inheritance Tax?
IHT is a tax levied on the value of your estate, which includes all your assets minus any debts, after you pass away.
IHT Nil rate Band.
Here’s the good news: only estates exceeding the tax-free threshold are liable for IHT. As of April 2024, this threshold sits at a comfortable £325,000. If your estate falls below this amount, you will not owe any IHT. However, for estates exceeding this threshold, the standard IHT rate is 40% on anything above it.
Residence Nil-Rate Band.
Additionally, if you leave your home to direct descendants (children or grandchildren), you may also be eligible for an additional £175,000 tax-free allowance, bringing the total threshold to £500,000.
Being married helps.
If you are married, you will each benefit from these allowances.
Why do you need to think about this now. Recent statistics show a significant rise in IHT revenue.
According to HMRC data, the first quarter of the 2023/24 financial year saw £2 billion collected by the Treasury in inheritance tax. This follows a recordbreaking year in 2022/23, which saw a total of £7.1 billion raised in IHT.
If you think your estate might exceed the thresholds, there are steps you can take to minimize the IHT burden on your beneficiaries.
Let’s explore some key strategies and allowances that can make a big difference:
Maximising Your Tax-Free Threshold:
The first and most straightforward strategy is to ensure your estate stays below the £325,000 threshold. This might involve using your lifetime allowances to give away some assets while you are still alive (remember, there are rules around gifting, so seek professional advice before doing so).
Gifting Strategies:
Gifting assets while you are alive can be a good way to reduce the value of your estate and potentially lower your IHT liability. However, there are rules around gifting. Gifts exceeding £3,000 per person per tax year may be subject to IHT if you do not survive for seven years after making the gift. It’s crucial to consult a financial adviser to understand the gifting rules and ensure you are using this strategy effectively.
Charitable Donations:
Leaving a proportion of your estate to charity can be a great way to support a good cause you care about while also reducing your IHT bill. If you leave at least
10% of the net value of your estate to charity, you can qualify for a reduced IHT rate of 36%. This can be a win-win situation, allowing you to make a positive impact and save your beneficiaries money.
Other Strategies.
There are other strategies that you can explore with your financial adviser, such as:
Life insurance policies:
Taking out a life insurance policy specifically to cover IHT can provide your beneficiaries with the funds to pay the tax without having to sell assets.
Business Relief (BR):
If you own a business, some assets within the business may qualify for BPR, which exempts them from IHT.
Using Trusts for IHT Reduction:
Trusts can be a valuable tool in your IHT planning strategy. By transferring assets into a trust, you can potentially remove them from your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. There are different types of trusts, each with its own rules and tax implications. For example, with a Discretionary Trust, you can name beneficiaries who will receive the trust’s assets in the future, but you retain control over when and how those assets are distributed. This can be helpful if you are unsure about your beneficiaries’ financial situations or want to ensure the assets are used responsibly.
The
mistakes
that people make.
One of the biggest mistakes people make with Inheritance Tax is procrastination. IHT planning is often
something people put off until later, assuming they have plenty of time. However, the earlier you start planning, the more options you have. By taking action early, you can explore various strategies like gifting or utilising trusts, allowing you to make the most of your allowances and potentially minimize the IHT burden on your loved ones.
Sometimes the planning is left too late and little if anything can be done.
Seeking Professional Advice
Inheritance Tax planning is a complex subject, and the best approach will vary depending on your individual circumstances. A financial adviser can assess your situation, explore the most suitable IHT-saving strategies, and help you create a plan that aligns with your financial goals and family circumstances. Remember, the earlier you start planning, the more effective your IHT strategy will be, allowing you to maximise the legacy you leave behind for your loved ones.

protecting your assets during the course of divorce proceedings
When parties get divorced, they don’t always realise that all assets acquired during the marriage whether in their sole name or in joint names are classed as matrimonial funds, including their pensions. There are exceptions, for example, inheritance which a spouse can attempt to “ring fence” in addition to pensions which were acquired prior to the marriage. When parties contemplate divorce proceedings, they may consider moving their savings or transferring property in order to prevent their spouse obtaining a share. If you consider your spouse is likely to do this, it would be prudent to issue a divorce application rather than give your spouse the time to move assets. You can then make an application to the Court for an Avoidance of Disposition Order or a Freezing Injunction which prevents your spouse from disposing funds. If your spouse has already disposed of funds/property, the Court can make an avoidance of disposition order. This allows the Court to set aside a disposal. If the funds have already been

spent by the spouse, the Court can order that the amount of funds disposed of be “added back” to the matrimonial pot and deducted from the disposing spouse’s share.
If you believe that your spouse intends to dispose of assets but has not yet done so, you could make an application to the Court for a Freezing Injunction which is an order freezing the spouse’s assets until a financial settlement has been reached between the parties. lasting power of attorney specialists
Do I Need a Lasting Power of Attorney Document?
If you’ve made a will, you might think you have everything covered. However, advancing age, illness, or an accident may mean that you need some extra help while you’re still here. Put simply, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to choose someone to look after your affairs when you can’t.
You’re in Control
Your LPA lets you decide what will happen if you aren’t able to manage your finances or make decisions for yourself. With an LPA in place, your representatives can ensure that your bills are paid and that you receive the care you need, when you need it. When creating an LPA, you choose who will make decisions for you. This person doesn’t have to be a family member; it can be anyone who knows you well and whom you trust to act in your best interests.
There Are Different Types
A finance LPA allows your attorney to manage your finances when you can’t, from paying your gas bill on time to making more complex decisions about your savings and investments.
A health and welfare LPA lets your representatives make decisions about your care based on what you’d choose for yourself if you could. This can include anything from medical care to where you live.
Why an LPA Is Essential
You might think that your family will be able to make decisions for you without an LPA, but unfortunately, they can’t. Even a joint account could be suspended to protect your interests if you are ill or classified as vulnerable for any reason. With an LPA, this cannot happen. Your bills will still be paid, and your loved ones can concentrate on looking after you.

The brand name Lexus has long been associated with quality automotive products, and the arrival of the LBX couldn’t fit better in to the Lexus stable, writes Bob Hickman.
It is the smallest of the range but it is a stylish and wonderful looking vehicle with its bigger siblings quaking with the number of sales I project this entry level Lexus will have.
All LBX Lexus are compact in design, think Toyota Yaris that is where effectively the platform for this derivative comes from. The interior is impressive, without doubt this is the most affordable of the Lexus range but like its siblings it has a quality that really is incredible. There are soft touchy materials everywhere, the steering wheel, I suggest, you could fall in love with, the quality of the material just makes you want to caress and steer the vehicle. Wherever you look there is quality, the interior feels expensive, the upholstery on my particular vehicle was luxurious, the materials on top pf the dashboard in addition were wonderful not scratchy plastic but more beautiful tactile features.
The seating in the rear is adequate for 2 adults, 3 at a push, but you would need to be close companions. The infotainment system that Lexus have equipped the vehicle with was also impressive as was the amount of standard equipment. All the models have a huge 9.8” screen which really is exceptionally easy to understand and navigate around. It has the benefit of Blue Tooth, as you would expect, and the Satellite Navigation system is easy to operate and was also very intuitive. The driver and front passenger have ample room, the driver has the advantage of adjustable seating on the steering wheel, so even a large 6ft or a small 4ft 8” person could get comfortable.
The level of equipment is quite good, 17” alloy wheels as standard, front and rear parking sensors, and Apple Play and Android Auto. The boot space is reasonable for the size of the car, it is not over impressive at 402 litres but it’s more than sufficient for a family of 4. My only criticism if there is one, is access to the boot, there is quite a deep rear sill which you have to lift items over and reach forward, but you do have the advantage of dropping the rear seats to give cavernous luggage carrying capacity.
The LBX is equipped with a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder engine, but it also has advantage of an electric motor for extra economy and power. It is a hybrid in so far that you don’t need to plug in to charge the battery, the engine does it for you, lift your foot off the accelerator and immediately you see that the battery is being charged. It is possible to switch to pure EV mode when you are in and around town, but only for short distances.
The performance from the 136bhp engine is reasonable, 0-60 in just over 9 seconds Lexus suggest anything up to 61.4 5mpg should be possible. During a week in company with this delightful little car, the computer suggested that we were averaging 60.7 mpg which I think is exceptionally good.
Without doubt Lexus are going to sell this LBX in an absolute profusion, it does everything that a Lexus should do, it is a quality vehicle and with prices ranging from just below £30,000 it has to be on your radar. As with most of the Lexus/Toyota brand it comes with a 3-year warranty or 60,000 miles. This can be extended for 12 months at a time, if you have it serviced at a Lexus garage and this could then be extended up to 10 years, so confidence in the brand.
bmw ix2 xdrive
m sport
With the arrival of the BMW iX2, BMW have introduced a compact SUV, a fully electric version. I particularly like the factor that the iX2 is a sleek coupelike vehicle due to the designers altering the roof-line, writes Bob Hickman.
The ix2 has a 66.5 kilo watt battery and can be purchased either as a single motor, providing rear wheel drive or as a twin motor, 4-wheel drive version. BMW claim a range of about 280 miles on a full charge.
One feature that should not be overlooked is if you can find one of the huge charging facilities it is quite possible to re-charge up to 80% of the battery life in half an hour and this of course has to be the future of where we are going, if we are going to succumb to limited range electric vehicles.
The iX2 is an unassuming companion, it is refined as you would expect from an electric vehicle and it drives rather well. The acceleration is linear for those who have experienced electric power with a 0-60 in a mere 5 and a bit seconds and we won’t talk about the top speed.
From a driving perspective the steering was satisfying and gave feedback, the on-road performance on motorways was quite exceptional, the suspension was firm enough and it didn’t roll on smooth motorway roads but there was a little bit of road noise that came back, but it wasn’t too much of a nuisance.
The mid-range from 50-70mph for overtakes was done without any problem whatsoever and it did seem that there were more than adequate amounts of power. Take the iX2 on a twisty road and again it was a pleasant companion, it didn’t get you too excited, I don’t think you would get in to trouble and with the 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds you could sprint between corners and allow the vehicle suspension to swallow up the bends. The brakes were at all times superb and nothing problematic.
Drivers and front passengers of various sizes will welcome and not have anything at all to moan about within the iX2. Being the smaller of the SUV’s you have the height which gave decent visibility. I do like the fact that there was a tremendous number of adjustments for the seats both up and down, forwards and backwards. In the back there is a surprising amount of space when you consider the profile of the vehicle, being a 6-footer, I could quite easily sit behind the driver and at all times felt comfortable and not compressed or ill at ease.
The iX2 interior is a welcome friend for those familiar with BMW. There was a quality feel and luxurious materials utilised wherever.
The dashboard is occupied predominantly by 2 large screens, a central infotainment screen, and a driver display for instrumentations,. They both sit in the same area for a somewhat seamless look, they are both bright and clear with responsive utilisation.
The boot space is quite good, there was no huge lip to negotiate, so putting items in shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
If the BMW brand attracts you and you want an electric vehicle and the iX2 appeals,I would make a suggestion that unless you really want performance then the 2-wheel version should be the option to go with, slightly more time to get to 60mph but it does have a larger range and more importantly it costs quite a few thousand pounds less.
The BMW iX2 XDrive30 M Sport had an on the road price of £56,540.
The BMW iX2 standard warranty is 3-years and this has an unlimited mileage, which is quite good for those who do a lot of miles They also offer an 8-year and 100,000 miles of cover for the battery which is reassuring but not so reassuring for those people in about 5 years’ time buying a second-hand version.
