CELEBRATION

MORAY BUSINESS WOMEN AWARDS

2021

T

he Moray Business Women Awards evening has always been a highlight of the year. 2021 was going to be extra special especially as we had only just returned to face-to-face events and as you all know it had been a long time since we have been able to hold such events. In fact, it had been a long 2 years since MBW last celebrated in the same room. Everyone was so looking forward to it. Unfortunately, Storm Arwen had other ideas and as everyone in the north-east is well aware the night of 26th November meant, not a celebration as planned, but a night of utter devastation of millions of trees, blocking of roads, damaging properties and lengthy power cuts for many. Changes again in Covid restrictions also meant the rescheduled date had to be cancelled which then took the event back online as we had done in the previous years, hopefully 2022 will be better. Not to be thwarted we all came together over zoom, with a drink in hand to celebrate our women in business. We were welcomed with our long-standing members and many new ones, even during the lockdown and restrictions we were delighted that many new members have joined the group. A lovely evening was had by all. It was great to have all our finalists able to attend. Many had been unable, due to various circumstances, to attend the in-person events. One benefit of online events means you can attend an event

which you may not normally be able to, no travelling, no worrying about babysitters and no need for a taxi home. It wasn’t quite the way I expected to end my year as MBW President, however it was great to share the moments with our members. After the event, as I did in 2020, I went out to meet our winners to present their trophies, certificates and flowers. It was fantastic to see them all, socially distanced of course. First, we had Marie Smith of Artisan Bothy who was the winner of Most Enterprising Business, Laura Thomson of ST Law took the prize for Best New Business, Caroline Dunbar of Kula Coffee Hut won Best New Product/Service. Debi Weir of Moray School Bank was the very popular winner of Moray Business Woman of the Year and Susan Longmuir of Susan Longmuir Architect was the Member of Inspiration voted for by her peers. I wish to congratulate again all our finalists and winners on their achievements. I had one more duty to undertake before handing over my Presidency. It was a great pleasure to hand over our fundraising cheque of £3124.29 to Jean Pryde from Moray Wellbeing Hub. This was a fantastic achievement through the year of restrictions. Thank you to all who contributed. Each year Moray Business Women choose a charity or good cause to help raise funds and also raise awareness. Amy Mortimer - President for 2021. New year and new President, Alison Read held the first event for 2022, once again an on-line event. It was held on the 26th January to allow the shortlisted ‘charities’ for 2022 to pitch to the MBW members. CHAS, Moray Baby Bank and Moray School Bank had been shortlisted and all gave outstanding presentations to the members along with a short Q&A. It was a very tough decision for the members as all are very worthy causes. All MBW members were then given the opportunity to vote, those not in

attendance being able to watch a recording of the presentations prior to the vote closing on Sunday 30th January. On Monday 31st January Moray School Bank were announced as the winners of a very close vote. MBW look forward to working with our new charity in 2022 and helping them fundraise and raise awareness. Our next event will be a networking evening on February 24th. Details available via our Facebook page: @MorayBusinessWomen and website www.mbwc.org.uk Two new initiatives for members in 2022 are a Book Club and Lunch and Learn sessions. You can find out more about the benefits of membership through our website, or by emailing www.mbwc.org.uk Alison Read – President for 2022.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Main suppliers of the tartan used are based in Perth, Forfar, Selkirk and Galashiels and the straps on the kilts are sourced from C A Gammack, Aberlour, made from their finest leather, to last a lifetime. Customers can make their choice of tartan when they arrive to be measured. If they don’t already have a tartan in mind there are a selection of sample books available. They can have a tartan specially woven and even design their own tartan, choosing colours and pattern design to make a unique tartan to them.

S

oy Kilts of Portsoy has just celebrated its 18th Birthday, a great achievement!

Of course, Soy Kilts also offers a full range of kilt jackets & accessories, including sporrans, kilt pins, skean dhus, socks and ghillie brogues for customers to choose to complement their outfit.

Moira George started working at home after completing her training but shortly afterwards the premises in Seafield St, Portsoy became available and the rest, as they say, is history. Moira is passionate about producing traditionally hand stitched, made to measure kilts for customers and takes a great pride in her work. The kilts are 99.9% hand stitched, with only the waistband being machined on. Using the finest of pure wool tartans in a range of weights, light weight for ladies and highland dance, medium weight or heavyweight for men’s kilts and regimental weight for their own Portsoy Pipe Band.

Customers will be expertly guided through the whole process of putting their outfit together by Moira, who likes nothing better than helping her customers choose the right accessories. Moira loves that no two identical outfits leave the shop, each one is tailored to each customer’s personal taste. If you are looking to put a more personal stamp on your kilt, why not join one of Moira’s kilt making classes. The classes are not designed for you to learn to make kilts but will guide you through making one for yourself or a loved one. Learning to make kilts is a very lengthy process and this way, Moira prepares the kilt ready for you, the student, to sew the kilt together. You will of course be expertly guided through the whole process. A keen knowledge of hand sewing is necessary to be able to participate in these classes, but you will be given some practice pieces to work on before starting on your kilt. The classes run over 13 weeks, for 3 hours on a Tuesday night and most of the sewing is done in class. You of course choose your own tartan; Moira prefers if she can take the measurements and mark out the kilt ready for the sewing to start. There is no pressure, you will work at your own pace, all the pleats are stitched in first. The number of pleats vary from kilt to kilt, depending on the tartan and size of kilt. This process alone can take a few weeks. You will then move on to basting in the lower part of the pleats, lifting pleats and inserting canvas to strengthen the kilt & prevent stretch in the future. Kilt aprons are

then completed, and belt loops added if required and finally the waistband. The straps and buckles are then stitched on. The kilt will need pressed at this point and then the inner linings inserted. Then your kilt is completed, and ready to be worn. Kilt flashes are made from the tartan remnants to finish it off nicely. Moira tells all her students a little bit about kilts and details of weavers and tartan during the classes, so you will learn the history too. Contact Moira at soykilts@yahoo.co.uk, call 01261 843303 or visit www.soykilts.co.uk.

As many of you know, this year is going to involve some changes for me as we welcome our new addition to the family in May! This means that I will no longer be working from the shop in Fochabers but from my new studio at home. This is all very exciting and I have lots of plans including, classes to be held in the tranquil setting of my countryside garden where you can come and fully unwind with only the sound of the sea in the background. Afternoon tea will be included. I will be doing one off classes and also blocks of six weeks with one class per week. I will be growing my own flowers to use in my wedding work and have a drying room so will still be creating hoops, moon crescents and the next big thing straight from the garden.

MOTHER’S DAY

unday 27th March 2022 is that special day dedicated as Mother’s Day this year. It is not the same date around the world, in the US it falls on the second Sunday in May, here it is linked to Easter which has a different date each year. Every year sons and daughters celebrate their mothers on this day, but I am guessing that this year, more than any other mothers will be spoiled across the country. After the time we have all had with lockdowns and isolations, unable to visit and go out to celebrate family occasions, this year will mean so much more. Whatever you decide to do, buy her something nice or take her out to wine and dine her, please support local businesses who have also had it tough. Many advertisers in Lifestyle have some wonderful gifts and meals out on offer. They will all appreciate your support.

Access: Arrive by car, parking is available at the Speyside Way car park opposite the opening of Gordon Castle at IV32 7EH. There are also good bus links from Stagecoach with a 18bus stop near the start of the walk.

Richmond and Gordon who for some years envisaged his Castle being lit by electricity. At the car park take a left and head towards the memorial gardens where you get an amazing, framed view of the River Spey. To the left you will see some steps, go down them and follow the path along. There is a small opening if you want to get a good view of the fish ladder. Back on the path go over the footbridge at the fish ladder you will see the signpost to the Intak (local name for intake).

Once over the footbridge you will pass some big houses, then there is a fork in the road, take the right fork towards the wooded area. Once on the wood track you will see a wayward marker post, just after you pass it take the opening to the right on the narrower path. This is where you will first see the derelict canal. The path can be quite uneven here and wet but well worth walking and getting dubby boots for. Keep on this path, it will eventually come to the edge of the river where you will get some great views of Ben Aigan in the distance. Follow the path right along the river and you will come to some steps and a bench. This is a great place to stop for a picnic and do some bird spotting on the river. Just beyond the bench you will see a wee opening and a little overgrown path where you will find an information board and the intake where the water came in to power the scheme. You still see the grid that was put there to keep fish and debris out. The water ran along the lade (known as the ‘Canal’) to the power station to drive the turbines to produce the electricity. Head back to the bench there is a path at the right that will take you along beside the edge of the canal. Keep your eyes peeled along here as there are several scrap cars buried in the undergrowth in the canal which were dumped many years ago. Keep on the same path it will take

you back to the wayward marker post where you turned off. Once back on to the tarred road, at the fork keep right, when you get to the shed at the end of the road turn right on to West St. Halfway along you will see a waterfall on the Burn of Fochabers and a wooden foot bridge running over it. Go over the bridge then take the next right on to George St. This will take you to Fochabers Square. On the other side of the road opposite the fountain you will see a large streetlamp that commemorates the opening of the scheme. Which is a great way to finish the walk. From the square you can just go along the High St past the traffic lights and bowling green and you will return to the carpark. There are a few cafes on the High St and a lovely ice-cream shop if you fancy some 19 refreshments after your adventure.

aomi and Karen have 19 years of bridal makeup experience, they enjoy being part of such a special day and have prepared many brides and their parties throughout the years. It all starts well before the big day with skin consultations and facials using Monu Professional Natural Clean Skincare, so that your skin looks radiant on your special day.

Tanning products to give that sun kissed glow are provided by Sunescape which is formulated with clean, natural ingredients that care for your skin.

Make up is personal to each bride and it is important to Naomi and Karen that the bride's individual requests are met.

Relax and unwind ahead of the big day with an Aromatherapy or a warming Lava shell massage to help relax and rejuvenate you.

It is vital to them that products used are Clean Beauty which means they are vegan friendly, PETA passed, and natural ingredients which are good for the environment, and most importantly the client. The cosmetics used are award winning Lily Lolo.

The Scent Boutique – a variety of beautiful candles and diffusers are available in salon, a lovely gift for the bride or bridesmaids on the day.

Bridal Nails are also so important, the choice of products are the professional brands of OPI and Light Elegance. It is crucial for the hands to look beautiful and in tip-top condition, as they will be presented to show off your gorgeous wedding ring. Lashes and Eyebrows frame the face on the big day and Lash Lift and Eyebrow treatments are currently proving popular, and a LashUs treatment lifts and tints those lashes to perfection.

ooking for the perfect wedding outfit and when is the best time to start looking? There is no real answer to that question, you will know if the outfit is right for you and will be happy to say “YES to the dress”. Things you might wish to consider are; Colour – if you are the mother of the bride or groom you may wish to compliment the bridesmaids’ dresses rather than co-ordinate. Choose a colour or pattern that doesn’t clash with the overall colour scheme, and you will look absolutely fabulous. Time of year and venue – do you really need a jacket or coat if it is all in the same venue? What you may wear to a beach wedding will be totally different to a wedding in January at a castle. Tradition – While you don’t need to follow this tradition most mothers of the groom wait for the mother of the bride to pick her outfit first. This is to ensure that your outfits do not clash, and you complement each other in elegance. Accessories – A stunning hat or elegant fascinator, jewellery, shoes and a handbag, hair, makeup and those undergarments to give the finished look. Make sure you also leave time for any alterations to be done. Comfort – it’s a long day Fashion house Veni Infantino has the classic tailored look but also do relaxed floaty dresses. Spanish design company Gabriella Sanchez is full of style, striking and colourful. LUXURY SCOTTISH FASHION

GREAT SCOT www.greatscotscotland.com

A

t Great Scot they have a simple goal; to create the finest quality clothing, and by doing so create great jobs, retain traditional skills and help restore economic prosperity in our local community. The company has an appetite to re-establish and celebrate the town of Keith’s other historically significant export to the world fine cloth. In the past 2 years, they have moved their headquarters to Isla Bank Mills in Keith to the site of one of Scotland's most famous weaving mills, Kynoch Cloth. They lament it’s not just the whisky that Speyside was known for!

Every garment that bears its elegant label is made from the highest quality, sustainably sourced, natural materials. Every 34 style is made here in Scotland in one of their 5

partner tailoring factories. They are passionate about sourcing all their fabrics from local familyowned mills and are in constant collaborations which keep looms busy year-round. Clearly, their clothing is expertly tailored and designed to last generations. There is nothing ordinary about this local brand. Their mantra reveals their upbeat love for what they do and for their customers; ‘We make beautiful styles for wonderful people.’ Their international cult following is equally devoted to their love of heritage, slow fashion, and Scottish manufacturing. This is a brand with a big heart, boundless energy, and yards of style. And so, sharp dressers with a penchant for tweed and tartan flock from as nearby

as Banff, Aberdeenshire, and as far afield as Banff, Alberta. They love being able to choose any style from their unique vintageinspired collection and have it made to their measurements in the rarest and finest of cloths. Now with their newly launched Kilt Rental Program, the focus is on ensuring that not only is the outfit locally produced and of the highest quality but that the outfit complies with the correct regimental and sartorial standards for the intended event. No more ‘looking like a rental’. You’ll look like you've had yours made to measure. More than this, they can be booked and paid for online and shipped and collected from anywhere in the United Kingdom. This is a company equipped for the digital age but very much rooted in standards and styles from a bygone era.

TRAVEL

THE MOST AMAZING HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS FOR 2022!

S

o the venue is booked, the photographer is on your wavelength, the dress is perfect and the mothers-in-law seem to be getting along fine! The only thing left to do is to book the honeymoon. But where? It is potentially the most important holiday you will ever book, so you want to get it right and make it special. Honeymoons are for 2 people, so it’s also important to bear in mind that each of you will have different ideas of what perfect is, so a bit of research to begin with is always recommended. With hundreds of destinations to choose from, a good travel agent will keep your right. Don’t be tempted to grab a “deal” you found online – a lot of the times these deals use the cheapest rooms and flights, meaning the chances of an upgrade etc are slim to none. Here is my guide to the top 3 destinations for the coming year

Maldives Synonymous with white sandy beaches, overwater villas and the embodiment of Luxury,

the Maldives is a great choice for any newlywed couple to settle in to married life. There are literally hundreds of islands and resorts to choose from, and they all offer something slightly different. Some will be perfect for those

just looking to relax, while not so good for those who enjoy a bit of adventure. There will be one to suit though – that much is for sure. Maldives can get a bit pricy, and again, don’t be duped by the cheap deals – they will not be the Maldives you expect. Best time to go is between November and April, and temperatures reach about 28 degrees.

Kenya For those who prefer their holidays a little more active, Kenya is a terrific option. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t have safari on their bucket-list, and the mix of luxury and getting back to nature is sure to please both of you.

inspiring idea initially. However, short flight times, great weather and a European familiarity combined with sensational hotels and beaches means that it really should demand a little consideration.

An inspirational land of arid plains, lively cities and picturesque beach resorts where there’s always something new to discover. Home to over 40 national parks and game reserves, Kenya also boasts a stunning coastline lapped by the azure Indian Ocean.

Secluded coves, clifftop dining, and super-yachts of the rich and famous ensure that Greece remains one of the most prettiest destinations within Europe, and sure to please couples on a budget just as much as those looking to splurge a little.

As with the Maldives, a trip to Kenya isn’t going to be a cheap option if you want to do it well, but the memories you make will truly last a lifetime. Best time to visit is January – March, although it is hot all year round due to its location near the equator.

Greece The idea of a honeymoon in Greece may not be the most

The best time to visit Greece is April through to September where the temperatures can reach as high as 35! Make sure you pack your tanning lotion! There are of course plenty more options out there, so if you are looking to start planning one, get in touch with your local independent travel agent who will be able to advise and inspire you!

Christmas Gala 2021

N

ormal training had not been possible for Moray Figure Skaters from March 2020, in direct contrast to many other UK rinks that resumed access to on-ice training in July/August 2020. To improvise, members took part in various Zoom off-ice training sessions, and some continued to train using special "off-ice" designed skates, with wheels instead of blades. Despite this, Moray Figure Skating Club managed to put on two performances of their Christmas Gala, having only returned to train at their home rink in September 2021. Moray Leisure Centre re-opened the ice rink in September, one of

38

the last rinks in the UK to re-open following lockdown restrictions. The club has skaters that compete both Nationally and Internationally representing GB, so the lack of access to ice has been a major hurdle for the competitive skaters. Inverness Ice Centre then extended an invitation to train there between October 2020 and the 2nd lockdown at Christmas 2020. This allowed the competitive skaters to train once a week after 7 months off the ice. The Moray club skaters then endured a further five months away from the ice, only resuming for one hour's training, every other week, when Aberdeen Linx club were kindly able to offer some limited on-ice space from mid May 2021.

Moray still had skaters attend National Young Stars events in Sheffield and a skater that qualified for and took part in the British Championship competition. These are huge achievements for a relatively “rural” club and the challenges they had faced. The members going through the British IceSkating Accredited Skate UK programme, had a break of 18 months whilst the MLC rink remained closed. The club worked extremely hard to bring back club sessions as soon as they could in September when the rink re-opened and have rapidly built the club back to teaching more than one hundred skaters each weekend. The Christmas Gala is an annual opportunity for the club to showcase its talent, with a mixture of group and solo numbers. The club was determined to put on a great show after missing out in December 2020. The skaters particularly enjoy working together in the group numbers, which ranges from the skaters just learning to skate, to the highest level skaters that compete Internationally. The competitive level skaters help with the group going through the learn to skate programme on a weekly basis. The annual Gala is a fantastic opportunity to not only showcase the amazing talent we have in Moray but to also inspire the members just starting out on their skating journey.

rehearsed and perfected a solo routine too, both were greatly missed by club members. Both performances went without a hitch and were thoroughly enjoyed by participants and spectators, in spite of all the difficulties they had to overcome, being a coach and competitive level member down. If you are interested in finding out more about Moray Figure Skating Club, visit their website or Facebook page which is linked to an easy booking system. Coaching can start from age 3 and your first week learning to skate is absolutely FREE! www.morayfigureskatingclub.co.uk Moray Figure Skating Club has been running for nearly 30 years. It is run by a team of volunteers as a not-for-profit organisation. The coaches are a brother and sister team as above. Both competed Internationally as youngsters and are highly qualified and experienced coaches.

The theme for the gala this year was simply “Christmas”. The club still faced some challenges in holding the show, not only due to the lack of ice time to prepare for it. One of their coaches of the brother and sister team, Graeme Summers-Campbell and Sue Summers-Farrell, had to self-isolate and unfortunately miss the Gala performances. This was also the case for one of our competitive section skaters who had

SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT

Mairi Gougeon, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Islands

W

hile many are already heralding the arrival of Spring, farmers will often remind us of the risks of a false Spring. We all know from recent experience that we can and do get harsh weather well into the year. But there definitely feels like a thaw, not least through the easing of Covidrelated restrictions. That’s down to people in Moray and elsewhere, getting vaccinated and boosted, and following the rules and guidance. Please keep doing so - and if you haven’t had your first, second or booster vaccine, there is still time and local clinics will be delighted to welcome you. And just as we were removing the restrictions in the South West on avian flu, we got a confirmed case near Inverurie. So we continue to ask poultry keepers and everyone who might keep a few hens or ducks to keep their flocks and birds indoors and follow all the advice on biosecurity. Moray is home to spectacular birdlife, including migrant visitors for the winter - if you see any dead birds while out and about, contact the relevant authorities who know how to deal with them. 2022 will clearly not be without its challenges, particularly due to the rise in living and energy costs. These affect rural businesses too and the Scottish Government is alert to this. I’m doing my best to help farmers, and fishers. In January, 44

we raised LFASS payments back up to 100% and paid out £47 million to over 9000 farmers and awarded £30 million to 600 rural businesses for agri-environment projects - some of these will be in Moray. In December, I announced over £3 million in grants to fishing and seafood businesses to help young fishers enter the industry, enhance sustainable aquaculture and support coastal communities. I also announced a new Practical Training Fund to provide grants for women and girls to take up practical training opportunities in agriculture. Eligible courses include tractor and trailer driving and training with sheepdogs - if any reader knows anyone who could benefit, encourage them to apply at Lantra Scotland. This fund might be relatively small, but it could make a big difference, helping create a more diverse rural workforce and supporting people to get the skills they need to give them better and more job opportunities in the future. MENOPAUSE MAYHEM

BY CLLR LOUISE NICOL

Magnets or HRT

S

ince my last article I have been contacted by lots of women and a few men who really appreciated me talking openly about my experience of the menopause, the symptoms and the impact it can have on work and personal life. That’s why I wrote it! As women, we are not looking for sympathy, just a bit of understanding on how these changes affect us and those around us. Talking about it made me realise that it wasn’t just me, I wasn’t going mad and that we all have varying symptoms. Some have sailed through it no bother and others had it worse than I did. I had a really good conversation with someone who explained how her sex life had changed and how confusing that was, she didn’t know if it was her hormones, her libido or if her partner was actually the one not interested in her. I was single for most of my symptoms (shocking I know given I was such a dream at the time), so I didn’t have to deal with that side of things.

Things came to a head for me after a meeting. At the end I apologised for making a mess of it, if nothing else at least I’m honest. I had a call the next day from a fabulous professional woman who told me that I had done perfectly fine the whole meeting and that I shouldn’t have 46been apologising. She told me her story and

experience of the menopause and how hard it is being in a professional role, especially when the hormones can leave you with a real lack of self-worth. She was the one that made me decide it was time to call the doctor. I can’t fault my doctor. She phoned me back and explained the options to me. She talked about HRT and natural remedies, but I must admit, my menopause brain didn’t hear what she said after she told me that some women find a magnet in their pants helps. I was off on a tangent, imagining walking through a room and anything metal flying through the air and attaching themselves to my crotch. That’ll be me I thought, Mrs Magneto. Anyway, I opted to give HRT a try. As someone that struggled my adult life with hormones, I was really scared but I was ready to try anything.

The first morning after applying a patch I woke up feeling great. It may have been psychological, but I felt like Dr Who, the David Tenant version of course, because we all know he’s the best Doctor, I almost shouted Alonseeeeeee. I thought, this is the most energy I’ve had in months, let’s do couch to 5k. Not one of my brightest ideas as the day after that I got up and was walking like John Wayne. I ouched all the way down the stairs, each step was ow, ow, ow. All of a sudden, my brain kicked up a notch and was able to focus better, I could read work documents first time around, instead of taking three goes to get the information to stick. I no longer woke up feeling depressed and with a banging headache. It wasn’t just that I had energy to get up and do stuff, but the change to my mental energy was amazing. I wanted to talk to people and engage with the outside world again. It has levelled off a bit now but when I think back on how exhausted I was, mentally and physically, I wish I had done something sooner. HRT has worked for me, but talking to other women, it hasn’t for everyone. I would strongly urge anyone going through menopause to contact their GP for advice and options. It may be something that women have been doing for ever but that doesn’t mean we should suffer in silence. Talk to other women. I now have menopause update texts from friends, and it helps us all, just to be able to share this experience with others who understand and to get advice. Some things can be embarrassing but when you have someone who is going through it too, it can actually be quite funny. When I asked my friend about these black marks from my jeans rubbing against the patches, she replied, yeah, my butt looks like an etcha sketch board.

Lifestyle MAG

I’ll finish with a great piece of advice that I received from my work colleague. She said “remember, self-care is so important, if Netflix, chocolate and wine is what you need, do it. You don’t have to conquer the world every day.” That was so important, and even now that I’m on HRT, I tell myself that sometimes, a time out to recharge is ok. As women we are all fabulous, we may be all different shapes and sizes but inside, our bodies are amazing and we need to take care of us.

DE-CLUTTERING

ROSIE BARRON IS THE TIDY COO Rosie Barron is The Tidy Coo, an award winning Professional Organiser. Rosie lives in Aberdeenshire with her husband, four Home Educated children, eight ponies, five dogs, three cats, four bunnies, chickens, ducks and fish which all Spark Joy.

I

f you have been following along with this little series of decluttering, then so far you will have covered your Clothes, Books, Papers, Toiletries and Christmas. This time we are going to look at the Kitchen. Kitchens can be divided into three main categories – Food, Cookware and Tableware. I like to start with food when I’m helping people to declutter their kitchens as it’s often the easiest one to get started on. I hate food waste and so I regularly go through my cupboards to check what is in date and what is getting close to going out of date to make sure that

48

we waste as little as possible. When doing food, further divide it into fridge, freezer and cupboard categories. You don’t need to take all of your food out at the same time, but you do need to make sure that you have pulled out everything in a single category. For example, all of your tins at one time, or all of your pasta. First thing is to go through the food and check for expiry dates. Some expiry dates (Best Before) may be able to be taken with a pinch of salt, but those are generally so long dated that I would say that if something has been in your cupboard long enough to go out of date, then you are simply not going to use it, and you should discard it. Once you have discarded those that are out of date, take a look at the food that is left and decide if you are actually going to use it. Sometimes, especially around Christmas, we are bought food that we simply won’t use, or we buy more than we will ever use. Crackers for example, or dates. If you are not going to use them, then don’t put them back in your cupboard only to throw them out when they go out of date, give them to a food bank or to someone who will use them.

When replacing the food back into its storage, make sure that you store like with like (so all the pasta together) and store the shortest dated at the front. The second category to look at is Cookware – that is all your baking and cooking equipment. As with every category, everyone will have different amounts of this that they need. We cook mostly from scratch in this household of six, and my husband loves to bake, so we have quite a lot! We still only have the things that we actually need though, and we do regularly go through things to check that we haven’t managed to acquire extras. When you do this category, do make sure that you handle everything. It’s easy to open a drawer, decide that you use everything in it and close it again. Don’t do this! Take everything out of its storage, group it in categories and make sure that you physically handle every item. DO clean the spaces whilst the stuff is out too! The final category in the kitchen is Tableware and this is everything that you need to eat with, so cutlery, crockery and glassware. Once again, bring each category together and check that you use it. I have a couple of specific points in this category. The first is that I often find that people have large numbers of things for entertaining that they never use. Now if you are someone who regularly caters for twenty, then of course, you will find it useful to have place settings for twenty. However, if you only usually cater for four, and occasionally cater for eight, and have once in your life catered for ten, I’m going to suggest that twenty place settings are too many. And yet, I come across this many quite frequently! Clogging up homes and almost never used. Keep to the number that

you use frequently, or at least once a year. If you suddenly find yourself catering for the five thousand, then you can borrow from someone else. Or go out to a restaurant and let someone else take the strain!

The second point that I would like to make in this particular category is that of keeping things for best. Now obviously, you don’t want your small children using your best crystal (I still keep my teenagers away from my nice glassware), but that doesn’t mean that YOU shouldn’t use it. Again, something I often find in the homes that I work in is large amounts of crockery, cutlery and glassware that is kept for best. Brought out once or twice a year, if it is lucky. This is such a waste of something that you love! Please use it more regularly. Tastes change between generations and your most beloved possessions will probably not be most beloved by your children and grandchildren and will be discarded. Use the best now, even if that means suffering breakages. Better to be broken through use, than to be thrown away unused. This goes for all categories – use the nice toiletries and the good perfume, wear your nice clothes, drink the good wine! Don’t let it waste away in a cupboard. HYPNOBIRTHING

Stepping up to motherhood

O

ne of the first questions a woman asks when she finds out she’s pregnant is ‘am I really ready to be a mother?’

It’s normal to associate being a parent with being an adult; and for many of us it’s a major step! It calls time on our lie-ins and late nights out. It forces us to become smart with money and time. Babies require a new level of forward planning as ‘just nipping to the shop’ becomes a major expedition. Perhaps for the first time we are not just thinking about ourselves; we also need to trust ourselves to make the right decision if our baby has a temperature or a little sniffle. We need to know when to call the GP and when to nurture and hug our little one close. Hypnobirthing, a practice and a concept designed to help you have a more calm and comfortable birth is the first preparatory step for many women entering motherhood. Instead of just leaving it all to the midwives or consultants women who use hypnobirthing want to learn how they can influence birth themselves. Instead of relying on pain medication or an external source to advise them how to move or breathe in their most vulnerable (and powerful) moments, they are instead able to tap into their own inner resources and strength and have faith in their own abilities.

50

Women who use hypnobirthing techniques for labour know how and when to accept outside support, but more than anything they have learnt to ‘come into their own’ because they know themselves inside out. They have faced their fears prior to setting foot in the birthing room and have taken ownership of the birth they would dearly love to have. They have birth preferences for the day, and they trust themselves to ebb and flow with whatever needs to happen. They are not afraid as they enter the birthing space because they have already come to know themselves, their doubts, their fears, and their capabilities. Using hypnobirthing techniques (system of breathing, thinking, movement and mindset based on science and physiology) offers no guarantee that you will have the birth of your dreams (nor can any other method!), but it helps you equip and empower yourself with everything you need so that you can feel as safe, secure, calm and relaxed as possible, no matter what path your birth takes. Sophia Hanson is a hypnobirthing teacher and women’s confidence coach. She offers private hypnobirthing sessions online and in person.

LUXURY TRAVEL BOUTIQUE IN ELGIN

M

urray Travel – which has been shortlisted for Luxury Travel Agency of the Year at the TTG Luxury Travel Awards – has opened its new premises on Elgin's busy High Street.

The local Murray Travel team in Elgin (l-r): Aimee Morgan, Jacqui Peat and Alison Jones.

This new travel boutique in the heart of Elgin is the first for Murray Travel outside of its headquarters in Inverness. The move follows last year's takeover of Alba Travel and Beaver Travel, which came with a commitment to maintaining a presence in the Moray town. Director Scott Murray, who runs Murray Travel with wife Sarah, said: "We're delighted to have opened our new travel boutique in Elgin, delivering on our commitment to retaining travel industry jobs and access to high quality travel services in Moray. "When we brought Alba Travel and Beaver Travel into the Murray Travel family last year, we knew it was important that customers should be able to continue to book holidays with the agents they have come to know and trust over the years. "Those local relationships are so important to us, as people and as a business, and we are proud to be able to continue the tradition of providing first-class travel advice in Elgin." The new site will allow the team of local travel agents to work with customers in store and remotely, offering true flexibility. A third site in Forres in planned for later this year.

Lifestyle MAG

Following the template set by its Strothers Lane HQ, customers are put at ease as soon as they walk through the door. The relaxed atmosphere and inclusion of a complimentary bar and coffee add to the experience. Mr Murray added: "Our ethos has always been to focus on quality of service rather than pushy sales. We want our customers to feel relaxed and to enjoy the experience of booking their holiday – the team's only goal is to help travellers find the trip of a lifetime." Murray Travel (formerly Inverness Travel) was established in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Scott and Sarah Murray, who added to their portfolio in 2021 with the takeover of local agencies Alba Travel and Beaver Travel. The Murray Travel team has won numerous awards for its high-quality customer service and innovative business practices. Murray Travel is a member of ABTA, AITO and the Scottish Passenger Agents' Association. Activities such as family walks to support parents to

This project is building on the great connections achieved during the walks and wild swimming in the Keith Peers 21 Project and the mental health first aid skills training in the young champions leadership project, delivered in the last 6 months and the ongoing success of a project with Speyside Highschool that focuses in the same areas. There are two short videos available on you tube of the previous projects that supported this new Keith focus. The links are below if you can access them.

The new funding will help resource parents and young people as emerging community leads for partnership working, with key partners to include Moray Council, Developing Young Workforce, Keith Grammar, and the Loft project. Jean Pryde, Project Leader and Volunteer Coordinator at Moray Wellbeing Hub said “This project has been invaluable to those within the Keith area. Now we have more funding, we hope to build on the great work already completed, and to support the mental health of more children, young people and their families during these continued challenging times”.

All this is hoped to be continued in this new project for the Keith area. One parent who took part said, “It was really therapeutic to talk to other parents who fully understood the
