GAMES & SHOWS

All the events are now well advanced in their planning and in fact some have already taken place. By the time we go to print Gordon Castle has past and Cornhill will only be a couple of days away.

There is so much goes into planning all of these events, it starts virtually when one year ends, away the go again onto the next one. A huge debt of gratitude must go to all the volunteers that ensure each of these events do happen in our communities. Without the hundreds of volunteers, who give up many, many hours of their own valuable time, none of these events would be able to take place. I’m sure they would be grateful for any offers of assistance, so please consider if you could help out at your local Show or Games, they will be delighted to hear from you.

There are many Games and Shows in the North East for you to attend and show support. You definitely have a great summer of entertainment on offer, whether you enjoy seeing the livestock being shown and paraded around the ring if they are lucky enough to be judged as the best in their category. It may be the Highland Games and the caber tossing and the likes that you find exciting. The Massed Pipe Bands are always a firm favourite of mine but if not for you, then there are many other trade stands, craft tents and main ring entertainment on offer. There is something for all the family at every one of these events.

Check them all out on the following pages, check your diary and get along to as many as you are able. You won’t be disappointed, but maybe say a wee prayer for the sun to shine.

Forres Highland Games

Saturday 8th July 2023, gates open 11.00am

Set in the stunning grounds of Forres’ Grant Park the Forres Highland Games offers a fun afternoon for all the family.

A traditional Scottish experience, from caber tossing to the hammer throw, long jump, high jump and more.

Games Day commences with a Pipe Band Procession through the centre of the Moray town before the Games’ flag is raised above the arena.

Visitors can enjoy craft and artisan food stalls, fairground attractions, a beer tent and food outlets. There is also Highland dancing, solo piping and massed pipe bands.

You may also get the chance to meet the Games’ Chieftain who will meet and greet visitors as he tours the arena.

Unique to the Forres Games is the Message Bike Race where spectators can turn participant and race the field on an old traditional message bike in hope of lifting the winner’s trophy!

Tracy goes to Iceland

This trip was a long time coming after a cancelled cruise in 2020. We booked through Murray Travel, flying from Glasgow as Aberdeen was no longer an option and after a two and a half hour flight and a 45 minute bus ride, we arrived at Reykjavik.

We returned to the same centrally located hotel, Center Hotel Plaza, as we had stayed there on our honeymoon. Our day trips were carefully planned to accommodate everything we wished to see and were booked through Viator.

Once settled in, the first stop was getting some food and we found a fabulous seafood grill on the main high street called Sjavargtillid – highly recommended. .

Then it was time to explore! Firstly we headed for the amazing church called Hallgrimskirkja. At 74.5 metres tall it is the largest church in Iceland and it dominates the Reykjavik skyline. It is free to look round

downstairs and if you want to admire the views from the tower you can do this for around £7 per person.

There were E-scooters everywhere and they intrigued us, so we decided to find a pub and do some googling. Add an app and away we go! This is a great way of getting about to cover a few miles in no time at all and at about £10 for an hour it’s pretty cheap and a right laugh!

The other highlights of our first day were Tjörnin, the

18 TRAVEL

city pond where there is an abundance of ducks, swans and geese paddling; wandering checking out the architecture; the Sun Voyager Sculpture and just admiring the beauty of the city! For tea we went to Svarta Kaffid and had their amazing meat soup in a bread bowl. This cost around £18 each with a drink. After all this first-day excitement an early night was on the cards.

The next day was dedicated to a full 12 hour tour of the South Coast. Our tour provider was Hidden Iceland and we had an amazing guide/ driver called Robert. After an hour or so we arrived at our first waterfall Skógafoss. This waterfall is an impressive 60m high and 25m wide that you can stand right beside but be prepared with waterproofs on! If you want to view it from the top there is an eye watering 527 steps climb but 100% worth it!

The next stop was Black beach with its black sand and sea stacks. The rock formation at the beach has the look of the Giants Causeway in Ireland and Fingals Cave on Staffa. This beach can be very dangerous and you really need to stay safe when the waves are wild. After that it was the beautiful village of Vik with the stunning wee church on the hill, then on to the Lava show. The Icelandic Lava Show is a unique exhibition about the volcanic activity in Iceland, what happens when a volcano erupts and what the residents do to deal with it. Nothing can quite compare to seeing real lava. A quick stop for snacks and then off to our next stop!

After a somewhat misty stop at Dyrholaey Lighthouse beside the Black beach it was on to

Sólheimajökull, the glacier between the volcanoes Katla and Eyjafjallajökull. The weather had improved by this stage so we could see the glacier in all its beauty and magnificence. There is a viewing area and there are companies that can take you hiking on the glacier.

In the evening we chose a lovely restaurant beside our hotel called Fjallkonan. We had been there before when we were on our honeymoon

19

in 2016. The food is very good and very interesting: we enjoyed an amazing 7 course taster menu which included puffin, minky whale, lobster and lamb and it was as lovely as the last time we visited.

Next day was more a chilled day for us and after a longer lie it was scooter time and this time we headed along for a look at the Harpa concert hall and conference centre that opened on May 4, 2011. The building features a distinctive coloured glass design.

Then on to Hofdi House where a major world historical event took place in 1986 when the presidents of Russia and the US, Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan, met to end the Cold War.

In the afternoon we visited the Settlement Exhibition which was really interesting and well worth a visit, with admission at around £16 per person.

Our final place to visit that day was Magic Ice a super cool ice bar!

We had always wanted to see the Northern Lights so joined a Northern lights tour that came as part of our holiday package. We knew before we left there was a small chance of seeing anything but just went for the bus run. We were taken to a lovely location at a beautiful church called Kálfatjarnarkirkja but sadly no Northern lights to be seen. Maybe next time!

Next day was our last day and another early morning for a full day tour, with tour guide David from Nice Travel. First stop was one of Iceland’s National parks Thingvellir, the only place on Earth where you can touch with both

hands the North-American tectonic plate and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Due to running ahead of time we managed to get a bonus stop to see where they bake the Lava rye bread as seen on Gordon Ramsay’s F word. Laugarvatn is a hot spring town with beautiful views across the water to the mountains. Here they bake rye bread in the ground.

Our next stop was Geysir to see the highly active hot springs. Strokkur geyser is the one that is most active and spouts water around 30 metres high every 4-8 minutes and is an amazing sight to be seen.

A few miles along the road was Gullfoss Falls. This waterfall I would describe as massive with 2 tiers and the force of the water is incredible. There are several viewing areas to view the falls and they should all be visited to get the full experience.

Our penultimate chapter was Kerid crater lake. A huge crater is thought to have formed when the magma in the centre simply depleted itself, and the empty chamber beneath caved in.

The last stop was the Blue Lagoon, possibly one of most famous places in Iceland and people come from all over the world to have a dip in the cloudy blue water.

After the Blue lagoon it was time to return to Reykjavik, say goodbye to our driver and get packed. We had one last meal out at the American bar because I just wanted a burger! Then an early bedtime as we were heading off early to catch our bus in the morning to the airport.

Just like that our holiday was over! Can’t wait to return - we still have so much to see!

Many of our destination airports operate worldwide routes, the sky’s the limit.

The Fetternear & Shakin Brig Circuit, Kemnay

Tracy undertakes lovely walks all over our beautiful country and we are delighted she has agreed to provide Lifestyle readers with the inside knowledge that she has gleaned from her many adventures

I hope you enjoy Tracy’s walks? Please do let us know and send us some photos.

This beautiful walk starts off in the village of Kemnay before heading into the Aberdeenshire countryside with some hidden treasures along the way.

Starting the walk from the village car park, take a right along Aquithie Road, then take the next right down Bridge road. Head straight along Bridge Road till you get to the junction of Riverside road, take a right here and go over the bridge, you will soon find the gates to Fetternear on your right.

Distance: 5 miles

Time: 2 - 2½ hrs

Level: Easy with some elevation

Terrain: Pavement, tarred road, woodland track and grass track.

Access: Arrive by car, parking available at the car park on Aquithie Road, AB51 5SS. There are several buses that have drop off and pick ups in Kemnay, check out more details online.

Go through the gates then pass by the gate house and follow the road, with the River Don on your right hand side. The river will turn to the right, shortly after the track will turn left. You will come to a marker post directing you over the bridge to the Shakin Brig but first carry on going straight on to find the Bishops Palace.

Bishop’s Palace is a large medieval ruin on Fetterhear Estate. The palace was originally built in the early 1200’s by Bishop Ramsay of Aberdeen for the Bishops’ of Aberdeen. It underwent several remodelling and enlargement over the centuries. In 1550 the palace became the seat of the Leslie family, a fire in 1919 made it no longer habitable and now stands fenced and only viewable from the front.

Leaving the palace, retrace your steps back to the marker post directing you to Shakin Brig, here you will enjoy the beautiful countryside, about ¾ miles along the track you will see an opening to the right and an old dry-stone wall.

TRACY GOES OUTSIDE
22

Follow the track and you will find the ruined remains of St Ninian’s chapel dating back to 1878 the present chapel was built on top of the ancient foundations of the original chapel that dates back to the 12th century. There is a small graveyard with some very old gravestones. Back on the track again keep going straight on, you will soon get closer to the edge of the river and the Shakin Brig will come into view. Keep on the track till you come to the road where you will turn right and head towards the footbridge. This is a nice spot to stop for a picnic. I had some swans passing by when I was there.

Once over the bridge take a right from here, you will walk along the road so be aware that there may be some traffic. There are some cracking views of the river along the way. At Mill Farm follow the road round to the left till you reach Dalmadilly Ponds. This is a great opportunity to do a bit of birdwatching, there is some seating, and I did spot a hide at the pond on the left hand side of the road.

Follow the road in between the ponds which will take you back to the main road, then turn right back towards Kemnay. There is a pavement all the way into the village but be aware of the traffic here. Follow this road all the way back into Kemnay and just keep going till you return to the car park where you began.

Safety At The Sea

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside! Of course, what could be better than being at the water’s edge on a beautiful or hot day? Being safe by the water’s edge of course! As June the 8th marks World’s Oceans Day, how can we enjoy our own natural beauty spots by the sea or indeed any body of water whilst still keeping safe?

The allure of the ocean has often been acknowledged, whether that is in popular fiction or on the big screen and certainly, when our special slice of Scotland basks in the summer heat and the water glistens encouragingly, it can be all too easy to disregard good sense and to plunge into the often, icy waters.

In recognition of this, Scottish Fire and Rescue has partnered with Water Safety Scotland and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to produce a special safety system designed to keep locals and visitors secure by the sea by reducing accidental drowning deaths by analysing the circumstances around past water-related fatalities This new review is a champion in its field, trailblazing a future for our own community as well as a national precedent to prevent future accidents.

As delightful as our coastline is, the cold hard fact remains that each year, despite stringent safety measures, fatalities and life-threatening accidents do occur each year, especially in the summer months. With this in mind, the special

28 KEEP SAFE

review created by these three organisations, known as the Drowning and Incident Review, outlines safe practices that help to ensure no dayout by the seaside ends in tragedy. On average, nearly one hundred deaths occur each year in Scotland alone owing to waterbased accidents.

The aim is that with the help of this review which seeks to analyse accidents that have occurred and ultimately prevent tragedies from happening in the future. The aim is that in future years incidents will be cut by 50%.

Carlene McAvoy, Leisure Safety Manager of RoSPA and founder and secretary of Water Safety Scotland said, “DIR has been specifically created for Scotland and is one of the first of its type in the world. It will be used as an important tool in Scotland to enable learning from incidents and mitigate the risk of future incidents. This supports the overarching aim of Scotland’s Drowning Prevention Strategy, to reduce accidental drownings by 50 per cent by 2026.”

James Sullivan, Station Commander at SFRS and chair of Water Safety Scotland, added,

“DIR provides a clear and consistent format for partners to review water related incidents and gain an understanding of contributory factors. This enhanced knowledge will enable a focused approach to be taken on preventative measures both locally and nationally throughout Scotland”.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, also known as RoSPA is a not-forprofit organisation which has a strong heritage dating back more than one hundred years to support the local and national community to implement safety in domestic settings as well as on the roads, at work and also whilst having fun. The ultimate aim of RoSPA and indeed, this review, is to enable everyone to live their lives to the fullest - safely.

Naturally, our coastlines are tantalising, especially for children enjoying the summer weather and the school holidays. As the world celebrates World’s Oceans Day, now is a golden opportunity to highlight the importance of safety by the sea.

Certainly, we all love to be by the seaside and, with a healthy amount of respect for its wild beauty, we will continue to enjoy our days out, complete with buckets and spades, a healthy dose of sunscreen and maybe even an ice cream as well!

RAFFLE Hearts of Grampian

A new tartan has been designed called ‘Hearts of Grampian’

The tartan was designed by Linda Gorn of the Keith Kilt and Textile Centre as a thank you to the heart team of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Linda wanted to show her gratitude to them and help raise funds, after her own dice with death and the lifesaving treatment she received.

The colours chosen for the tartan were carefully chosen and have specific meaning. Grey was the first choice as that is the colour when she was unwell, red represents the vital blood necessary in every operation. White is the light at the end of the tunnel and the various blues, purples and greens represent the uniforms of the various nurses, doctors and physios that played such an important role in Linda’s care.

The tartan has been woven by the House of Edgar at their mills in Keith and garments made in the tartan can be purchased at the Keith Kilt and Textile Centre

There is a raffle in aid of the Hearts of Grampian and tickets can be purchased online or in various shops in Keith and FifeKeith.

The fabulous prizes are:

First prize - Kilt outfit to value of £1500

Second Prize - Original Charlie Roy painting

Third Prize - Ortak Silver Jewellery set

Plus many more amazing prizes.

The raffle will be drawn on the 17th June at the Keith Kilt and Textile Centre by The Banffshire Lord Lieutenant Andrew Simpson.

INVERNESS DISTILLERY

Loch Ness can lay claim to its very own monster and now, not to be outdone, the River Ness can as well. But while the loch monster holds sway over a vast expanse of very deep water and is seen by only a fortunate few, the river monster sits proudly on the banks of the Ness and can be seen by all.

This new monster is the Uile-bheist, Inverness’s first distillery in 130 years, reconnecting the highland capital with its proud but lost whisky and brewing history. Uile-bheist is Gaelic for ‘monster’ and is the first distillery to open in the city since 1892. Started in January 2021 and completed in February 2023 at a cost of

£7.5m, the distillery is powered by a low carbon sustainability centre on site and is tipped to attract 100 tour visits per day in peak season. Around 40 jobs will be created by Uile-bheist’s operations, in production, tours, admin and marketing and indirectly (downstream).

“Our scale is craft, not volume. Our clean energy process, using shallow water wells, has been described as exemplary,” said owner Jon Erasmus. “It’s great to bring whisky distilling and brewing back to the city, but we also wanted a high level of design specification throughout, from the stills to the dramming area, to the tap room. If people have travelled from

36

New York or Tokyo, or if they’ve seen a lot of other distilleries, we want them to come here and think: I really like what they’ve done, here. Everything is photogenic.”

Water and energy for Uile-bheist’s whisky production comes from the River Ness through a pioneering district heating system which uses shallow water wells to fire heat pumps; a system being eyed by local authorities. Water is treated by fluorescent light with the only grid requirement being electricity, partly provided by the glass-fronted building’s roof-top solar installations.

With products now in production, even the brewing/distilling process has been fine-tuned with sustainability as the watchword. Its first two signature craft ales, Inverness Lager and Spirit Dweller IPA, are the first beers brewed in Inverness for 34 years and are now available for visitors in the stunning on-site tap room as well as at selected local hotels.

Future phases will see the creation of a distilling ‘campus’, with increased capacity, a bonded warehouse with shopping plus enhanced tap room, tasting and visitor spaces.

Head Distiller Andrew Shearer, who previously worked for Glen Turner and Kinrara in the Cairngorms National Park, explains: “We use Bairds Malt, which opened a new malting down the road, so they are as local as you can possibly get. That keeps our carbon footprint down to a minimum. We have also taken a lot of steps to recover the energy in our processes. We have a lot of heat exchangers and we are always trying to capture that energy that we have generated in order to re-use it in the process.

“We have one of the more efficient set-ups that I have seen, to minimise our carbon impact. Our distribution is currently very local, too, so even

at finished product stage we are keeping our carbon impact low.”

The production of the low carbon whisky and craft beer comes through a dual technology developed by, and imported from, famous German brewing innovators and coppersmiths, Kaspar Schulz. Interestingly, this is the first whisky stills the company has made in over 140 years, as they are traditionally renowned for brewing.

New Head Brewer, Andrew Hodgson, whose previous experience was with Black Isle Brewery and Tempest Brewing Co, is pleased with the first two products, Inverness Lager and Forest Dweller IPA.

“The lager is great, it is nice and clean. It has had a long time to condition just under zero degrees, so that’s fantastic. The IPA is a good example of a west coast IPA. High in bitterness and North American hops to give us that piny, resinous character. It has some nice malt character in there as well to make it a bit sticky but it has tons of body to it. It’s best served cold.”

Uile-bheist enlisted Melbourne-based pop culture illustrator, Ken Taylor, who has worked with Jack White, The Pixies and Pearl Jam, to design their ‘monster’ motif. Large scale installations by the designer, who also created posters for

films Up, Pikachu and How to Train

Your Dragon, adorn the tap room and tour space walls.

Investors can now purchase the very first historic limited run of 100 casks by visiting https://www.uilebheist.com/distillery-whiskytours/#casks

Set Sail for the ACE Winches Scottish Traditional Boat Festival this July

One of the country’s largest maritime culture and heritage events will sail into the historic harbour of Portsoy this July. The ACE Winches Scottish Traditional Boat Festival takes place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July 2023. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, a flotilla of traditional sailing vessels will drop anchor for a weekend of music and dance, Scottish food and drink, age-old crafts and unique handmade items and gifts.

The festival was first held in 1993 as a one-off to mark the tercentenary of Portsoy harbour. Since then, it has been firmly anchored in the town’s calendar, taking place annually and attracting thousands of visitors from across the region and further afield.

Celtic rockers, Skerryvore will kick off the festival programme as they headline the Big Gig on the Back Green on Friday 30 June. The band, which has recently toured the globe, will perform tracks from their new album TEMPUS. This is a

licensed event for over 18s only and tickets can be purchased online from www.stbfportsoy.org

Making her maiden voyage following long and expensive restoration works, the iconic Reaper, a 19th century Fifie Sailing Herring Drifter will return to the festival. A rare survivor of the golden age of sail, Reaper is owned by the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther and is one of the few vessels in the UK’s Natonal Historic Fleet which is still in seagoing condition. Over the last six years, Reaper has underwent significant refurbishment, replacing

decayed or damaged wood to restore structural integrity and a complete internal refit was carried out. Skipper Eric Lauritsen and his eight crew will make an 18-20 hour journey from Anstruther in Fife to Portsoy for the festival, where visitors will be able to climb aboard Reaper and experience what life was like at sea, over 100 years ago.

In the festival Food Fayre, you’ll find the best Scottish produce on the menu. From Aberdeen Angus beef to handmade pies and pickled onions, locally produced gin, rum and whisky and sweet treats including fudge, toffee and Belgian chocolate. However, no visit would be complete without a scoop, or two of Portsoy Ice-Cream. Visitors can also take home a piece of festival history with a bottle of 30th anniversary commemorative Speyside

Single Malt whisky, distilled by Duncan Taylor of Huntly.

Traditional craft demonstrations will be on display in the Craft Fayre, with handmade ceramics, jewellery, prints and paintings available to browse and buy. A host of local groups, artists and performers will take to the stage during the weekend, including Cullen-based duo Fair Trickit with their self-penned songs and festival favourites Skip 2 the Beat with their fast-paced skipping stunts. Younger visitors can enjoy a range of fun activities in our Kids’ Zone, kindly sponsored by Macduff Shipyards and Portsoy Thrift Shop. Trampolining, bouncy castles, segways and you can see the sights on board the Tam O’Shunter Land Train, which will be running throughout the weekend.

The ever-popular Raft Race will take place on Saturday afternoon, where you can see teams of three compete to make it across the harbour in their homemade raft and paddles, without falling in!

Thanks to festival sponsors ACE Winches, Glenglassaugh, Puffin Wood Fuels, Hamlyns of Scotland Oatmeal, Macduff Shipyards, Portsoy Thrift Shop, Twice Buried Rum, Moray West, Urquhart Joinery Services and Gray Composting Services Ltd.

Tickets are discounted when purchased in advance online, to book visit www.stbfportsoy.org.

We have a pair of tickets to see Skerryvore headline the Friday night Big Gig on the Back Green to give away, to enter please see details on competition page 79.

Worry when giving bith

First time mum Kate is 30 weeks pregnant. She told me: “I don’t want to think about ‘the birth’ because it terrifies me so much.”

Can you relate to that? You’ve probably heard lots of stories about a friend of a friend where labour didn’t go according to plan. You’ve likely seen births on the big screen where the mum was in a panic, everyone was rushing aboutand there was lots of talk about pain.

It’s no wonder thinking about giving birth makes you feel a bit sick and gets your heart racing.

It’s a well-known fact that you cannot accurately plan how your baby’s birth will be, but you can prepare for it so that you know how to stay as calm and relaxed as possible no matter what happens.

WORRY

When you worry you create tension in your body which makes your contractions more painful. Because your uterus (your womb) is an organ and a muscle, when it is tense and surrounded by tension, your contractions are also less effective (which likely means you’ll need more of them which can lead to exhaustion = more worry).

This is known as the fear-tensionpain cycle. You can interrupt the cycle by rehearsing and using breathing techniques, moving your body (an active labour), and by changing the thoughts and images in your mind. This is partly what I teach in hypnobirthing.

It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

‘If only it was that easy’ I hear you say.

There is of course no guarantee that you will suddenly become a birthing Goddess and have the birth of your dreams, but you can stack the odds firmly in your favour. I tell all my couples that no matter what type of birth they go on to have, the skills and tools they’ve learnt in hypnobirthing will set them up to make the best of the situation they face (and it guarantees pregnancy feels calmer!).

If you’re pregnant right now, start to notice what you’re thinking and feeling about birth. Get informed and practise breathing for labour (knowledge is not enough). Elgin Museum

In 1836, a group of like-minded individuals agreed to “Institute in Elgin a Museum for the collection and preservation of objects of Science and Virtue”. A mere 7 years later, Elgin Museum opened its doors for the first time to visitors. Today, 180 years later, we are in the same specially designed building (with some additions and extensions!) and still take great delight in welcoming visitors of all ages and interests. Naturally, our collection has grown – and is still growing – but we continue to preserve and, more importantly, share with our visitors objects and artefacts that tell the story of Moray, its people and places. Elgin Museum continues to be independently run and can lay claim to the title of Scotland’s oldest continuously independent museum still in operation.

As you may imagine, the last few years have been a challenge, but our dedicated band of volunteers have continued to work tirelessly in the background (and sometimes in the foreground) to ensure Elgin Museum’s survival. We were especially pleased to be able to reopen in April this year, albeit with more limited opening hours than visitors may have been used to pre-Covid. Entry is free, however visitor donations are welcomed – all donations received help fund the day-to-day running costs of the Museum, and are essential for our survival.

Our Meet & Greet Volunteers are on hand to welcome you, Wednesdays to Sundays 1pm –4pm, to tell you all about our fantastic Museum, answer any questions about our displays, and generally to make sure you have the best visitor experience possible. Without our Volunteers it would not be possible for us to open, so we always take every opportunity possible to extend our thanks to them. If you’re reading

48 VISIT

this and thinking that it sounds like fun (it is!), please do get in touch – we’re always happy to welcome new volunteers.

For any first-time visitors to Elgin Museum (or repeat visitors looking for new inspiration), here are some tips and suggestions from our Volunteers:

There’s so much to see – give yourself plenty time to visit, or why not come back again for a second visit!

Don’t forget to look up at the building, on the outside and inside, its as much a part of the collection as the various objects.

Make sure you don’t miss the Elgin Reptiles – of international significance!

The Pictish Stones are a must-see, you really get up close and see the tool marks from the stone carvers.

There’s more to Elgin – and Moray – than you might think, you can learn so much about the history of the region you might not have known about.

If you’re unable to visit in person, or just want to learn more, you can visit Elgin Museum from home, via our website and our YouTube Channel. On our website you’ll find our Museum Musings blog, fun family activities, exhibition catalogues, and our newsletters for more about what’s been happening at the Museum. Over on our YouTube Channel, we have short videos about our displays, object insights, Geology highlights, our Elgin Museum: In Conversation interviews and how-to craft videos in Elgin Museum Makes. All of this content is available for free, but donations are always welcomed if you’ve enjoyed it.

Become a Friend of Elgin Museum – Join The Moray Society!

Elgin Museum is owned and managed by The Moray Society, a membership organisation open to anyone who shares the Society’s main aims of protecting and promoting the heritage of Moray. Incomes received from membership

subscriptions are all fed back into the Museum, covering daily running costs - which with a building as large and old as ours are not cheap! The Society is headed by a Board of Trustees, all volunteers, who, along with our volunteer Museum Management Committee, are responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of Elgin Museum. New Moray Society Members, and new Trustees, are welcomed – visit the Membership page on our website for more information about how to join and play your part in helping to make sure Elgin Museum remains open and accessible for future generations.

We hope you’ll make time to visit Elgin Museum this season, visit the Museum from home, or join us at one of our events planned for throughout the year – find & follow us on social media, or visit our website to sign up for our Museum Updates to keep up to date with What’s On at Elgin Museum.

Need some extra sparkle as summer approaches?

Have you noticed that your teeth aren’t as white as they used to be, or perhaps as white as you’d like them to be? There are many reasons why teeth can lose their luminosity, but luckily, there are now also many ways to get your dazzle back!

As well as the obvious culprits like smoking, curries, red wine and black coffee, you might be surprised to learn that some over the counter medications can cause tooth discoloration, and more unexpectedly, so can eating potatoes and pasta! A build up of proteins on the surface of the teeth attracts staining which can be hard to shift despite regular brushing. This is where a bit more help is required.

Gone are the days of harsh chemicals risking damage to your tooth enamel. These days a variety of gels are available from your chemist, usually involving a combination of dispersal agents which disrupt the protein molecules and make them easier to shift. These gels can be applied regularly over up to 8 weeks, and may lift whiteness by 3-6 levels. (Remember that any crowns or dentures may not react in the same way as your natural teeth, so the shade change may be reduced).

If you don’t really want to spend the next few weeks with a mouthful of gel, or wearing tooth shields though, Aberlour’s Speyside Spa now offers cosmetic teeth whitening, which safely brings up to 16 shades of extra whiteness to your teeth, in only 45 minutes! The major difference to the shop bought gel treatments, is that the

Blue Forsa ™ gel is accelerated by the use of intense white light, which speeds up the process. Requiring just 3 x 15 minute bursts in one appointment. UK compliant, and with a formulation to prevent sensitivity, retain moisture and protect the tooth enamel, Speyside Spa’s Cosmetic Teeth Whitening will bring your smile back to its dazzling best!

They have been friends since the first day of primary school in Elgin and, since then, have assiduously pursued their aim to establish themselves on the Scottish music scene. They are Dan O’Shanter. Hayden Peace, Max Robertson and Aiden Smith – The Zebecks. Back in lockdown, they each made the move to Glasgow to pursue a career in music. After gaining BBC Introducing radio play with demos alone, the band were given their first

support slot at Broadcast. By contributing to an advanced sell-out, they were offered their first headline before they’d even stepped on a Glasgow stage. Intimately depicted in an awardwinning documentary from a student filmmaker, their debut headline kick started a busy 18 months of 30 shows. This led to the opportunity to headline King Tut’s in September 2022, an impressive achievement at such an early stage in their career.

52

The show declared The Zebecks one of the most exciting new names on the Glasgow underground scene. Throughout this period, the band developed a more mature, modern sound that transcends genre boundaries. This ranges from energetic post-punk anthems to mesmerising, dramatic ballads that take the audience on a journey of emotions, with vivid, introspective lyrics woven throughout. Breakthrough, their first fully-produced single, perfectly encapsulates this new era and forefronts the band’s drive to national success. The song was released on all major streaming platforms on the 7th of April. In the first weekend it amassed over 2,000 streams on Spotify alone.

They have set out to create a dynamic, upbeat post-punk track that is first and foremost Scottish and portrays their unique, inspired writing

style. Whilst recording at Castle of Doom, producer Jamie Holmes stated his excitement that they are bringing back the early 2000s Scottish Indie sound with modern flair. After recording, they created an artistic vision to complement the music.

This is just the beginning: they have grand plans for 2024 and they will be concentrating on writing a debut album and securing a recording contract. Who knows what they will have achieved by this time next year – and we wish them all the very best for their future musical careers.

The much-loved Moray folk festival Speyfest is gearing up for its 26th edition this summer.

The three-day event will take place between Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd July, and is set to bring the very best in Scottish and Celtic culture to the beautiful village of Fochabers.

The festival was founded by James M Alexander in 1995 who sadly passed away last year. Having played with the Fochabers Fiddlers and a number of Scottish trad bands, James realised what a spectacular setting Fochabers would be for a summer event showcasing traditional music, dance and crafts.

The festival was founded on the premise that it would give keen young musicians a chance to meet and learn from the best-known musicians on the scene while they were in town.

With help from the local Fochabers Gala Committee, some fellow musicians, the local headteacher and pupils of Milne's High School and many others, Speyfest became a reality.

Over the last 25 years, it has grown from a local event with one small tent holding around 300 people, to a 1500-capacity tented village welcoming visitors and families of all ages, from pre-school children to senior citizens.

What an amazing lineup they have for 2023:

Genre-bending trio Talisk, innovative modern female folk band Kinnaris Quintet, beloved Gaelic crossover act Norrie MacIver Band, and the inimitable musical combination of John McCusker, Michael McGoldrick and John Doyle.

Scottish favourites Skerryvore, Celtic supergroup Mànran and folk singer Siobhan Miller and her

six-piece band were announced earlier this year, and also set to perform at the festival’s Tented Village are Glasgow-based five-piece Ímar, female-led fiddle sensations FARA and energetic quartet Mec Lir.

Calum Stewart returns to his native Speyside with a quartet featuring double bass, bouzouki and step dancing, all held together by Calum on pipes, flutes and whistles.

Scottish ska outfit Bombskare, and Irish traditional duo Daithí and Adèle, will have hands clapping and toes tapping across the weekend. Of course local sensations and festival favourites the Milne’s High School Fiddlers and Auld Fochabers Fiddlers will as ever be joining the Speyfest party.

Highland accordionist and BBC broadcaster Gary Innes will take to the stage to compere Speyfest’s Family Sunday, keeping audiences of all ages entertained with stories throughout the day.

The festival’s much-loved music workshops, a bustling craft fair, whisky and gin tastings, prosecco afternoon tea and the well-attended Celtic Kirk service are included in the packed programme.

The last day is one definitely not to be missed, with the beloved Auld Fochabers Fiddlers, local duo A Louth Lilt, energetic quartet Mec Lir, innovative modern female folk band Kinnaris Quintet, Glasgow-based five-piece Ímar and contemporary trad band Ruach all performing. Headliners Skerryvore will be bringing the 2023 festival to a triumphant close.

Speyfest Chair Ashleigh Macgregor said: “Excitement is certainly mounting as we look forward to welcoming faces old and new to our beloved festival.

“As always, we will be showcasing the very best in traditional and Celtic music across the three

days, as well as running family-fun activities for all ages, food and crafting events, and musical workshops, all while injecting economic opportunities into the local community.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to all of our sponsors and supporters without whom Speyfest wouldn’t be possible.”

A range of tickets are available for Speyfest, including weekend passes, specific concert tickets, specific stomp tickets, combined tickets and all-day Sunday tickets. Entry to the craft fair, which is held on Saturday afternoon, is free.

Food vendors and the bar will be open from 5pm on Friday 21st July, and from 12 noon on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd.

Bang on the shoreline, at the end of a tarred road (therefore no passing traffic), oodles of parking and a generous helping of disabled bays – welcome to The Beach Hut, situated in what has to be one of the most enviable postcodes in Lossiemouth.

On arriving, it does not appear to be anything other than a seaside town eatery but, on closer inspection, it reveals little details, the sum of which make this a definite place to visit. For starters, there is a substantial outside area where you can sit and soak up the sun (fingers always

crossed that the sun does put in an appearance, that is), read a book, chat with friends or simply stare out over the North Sea into the middle distance and wait for the Lossie jets to show up.

And you can bring your four legged friend too! A huge bonus. There are two little barrels at the front door that dispense fresh drinking water into squeaky clean stainless steel bowls for the dogs, who are also permitted to come with you inside the café. Another bonus.

The gleesome threesome are meeting again, to chat and catch up over supper and also to give The Beach Hut the once over. It is some time since we all sat down together and so this is going to be a fun few hours and we most emphatically don’t want indifferent service and mediocre food. We will be in critical mode!

We needn’t have worried. The cheerful smiling waitress who welcomes us into the interior of the café could not be more delightful. We can sit wherever we fancy – and the interior is arranged such that you do not have anyone overhearing

LOSSIEMOUTH
56

your conversation or squeezing past you to get to their seats. Perfect – another box ticked.

A table by the window is chosen, drinks are ordered and menus are left for us to peruse. You can chose from soft drinks, through several interesting mocktails and on to the beers and spirits should you wish. And a very comprehensive bar it is too, unobtrusively tucked into the corner of the room. It’s soft drinks for all three as all three are driving.

The menu is not hugely vast but covers breakfasts, light lunches and supper dishes, with interesting sides. A note on the menu says that new and exciting dishes are in the embryo stage at the moment – watch this space! This is good, as the chef is not resting on his laurels and wants to keep the menu evolving.

Talking of the chef, we all would like to meet him. We know he is called Lewis and is originally from Belfast but is now firmly rooted in Lossiemouth: the waitress says she will go and ask him to come out. Which he does. Lewis strides out of the kitchen, all six feet and however many inches of him, oozing charm and bonhomie and with a smile that would light up the Royal Albert Hall. He is instantly likeable and very funny as well, so our chat with him about what we should choose from the menu is sort-of serious interspersed with laughter.

Finally – we choose. A large hot dog with Lewis’s special peppercorn sauce, a cheeseburger with all the trimmings and three cheese macaroni cheese with a crispy onion-based topping. Lots of chat and looking around the interior, noticing the special little touches, while we wait and then huge ‘oh my goodness’ cries when the food arrives. The portions are definitely not small. The hot dog and burger arrive in individual cardboard boxes with replica newspaper linings – the intention here is that you grab with both hands and open wide, but neither of us has a snake-like jaw so plates are brought to make things easier. The macaroni is in its ceramic

57
Vegan burger

dish which is placed on a larger plate, allowing for the garlic bread and a mammoth portion of chips and salad. Oh yes, as if all this is not enough, out from the kitchen comes a vegan burger (for us to try) and two boxes of chips – one cheesy and one dirty fries (very spicy). Both boxes carry a cheeky hand written message and smiley face. The food is good, very good and I can only imagine what the breakfasts must be like on the strength of our suppers. Quite frankly, we struggle to finish everything because there is so much, not because it is not good. No problem – out come the take away boxes and in goes the balance of the food: just like us, the management does not like waste and whatever you cannot finish can go home with you. Our cheerful waitress asks if we would like dessert – oh heavens, no! We are chock-a-block full and could not possibly manage another mouthful and not even cheesecake would tempt us. (That just goes to show how full we are!)

Another hour or so passes while we chat and not once do we get the impression that we must pay and go. This is so refreshing, when some establishments bring the bill along with the coffee and you start to feel that you must

relinquish the table. It has been a super early evening get together and we have enjoyed every minute in this welcoming licensed café. By the way, they play terrific music from the 70s and 80s – and no doubt from other decades too, but what I heard ticked a big box for me.

It is a fun place, unpretentious and generously welcoming. Go visit.

ROSIE BARRON IS THE TIDY COO

Rosie Barron is The Tidy Coo, a Professional Organiser and Declutter Coach. A Master KonMari Consultant and member of APDO (the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers). Rosie lives in Aberdeenshire with her husband, 4 Home Educated children, and a whole menagerie of animals which all Spark Joy.

“I’m overwhelmed by paperwork and can’t face starting.” One thing that you can do to cut down on the amount of mental energy that you use in these situations is to make rules.

For example, you could say, “Any receipts that are over seven years old, I will let go.”

“Any paperwork from courses that I did and have not looked at since, can go.”

“Paperwork relating to my old job (that I left 15 years ago!) can go.”

“All duplicates can go.”

The rules you create will depend on your unique circumstances but having them in place makes it all that bit easier.

“Help! What do I do with lightly worn clothes? I can’t get to my wardrobe because I have too many of them in the way!” It is as well to have a designated spot for clothes that you’ve worn once and aren’t quite clean enough to put away,

but are too clean to need washing. This prevents a floordrobe from taking over your room.

I have a hook in my wardrobe that they are hung off, but other suggestions are that they could be hung at one end of the wardrobe, on the back of the bedroom door, or my father used to have a special stand that was meant for a jacket but could easily be used for lightly worn clothes. You could also have a designated drawer or shelf to fold them on to. The actual spot you decide to put them is not that important, it’s having a spot that is important.

“I’ve recently bought an ottoman bed and I want to make the most efficient use of the storage that I can – what should I do?” Don’t be in a rush to fill the space under the bed, always remember that decluttering is better than organisation, but sometimes there is nothing quite like having a new space to fill!

Bedding is the most obvious use of the storage under the bed, or off season clothes if you are the sort of person who changes your wardrobe over. Vacuum packing is good under here because it is surprising how dusty it gets and also as it’s not well ventilated,

DE-CLUTTERING

60

things can get smelly, but remember to label the packs as it’s easy to forget what is in them.

It is also a good place to hide presents that you don’t want to be found! But don’t forget that they are there.

My own bed is lifted off the floor and has nothing underneath it except a small basket either side that serves as a nightstand.

“What do you do when individual items Spark Joy, but the number of them doesn’t?” In this situation, start with your vision. Look at your home in your mind’s eye and see what is in it when you have “finished” as this may help with letting go of some of the items.

Beyond this, I have two practical suggestions to help. The first is to decide on the number of things that you think are necessary. For example, if you are doing sheets, work out how many you need for your home, then put the sheets in order of preference, count down to the number necessary and let go of the rest. This works quite well for practical things.

The second is “How much space am I willing to give over to store this?” and this one works better with items that aren’t so practical as sheets, for example books or ornaments. For example, I have a set of shelving that I use for my ornaments (pictured). I can keep whichever ornaments I want so long as they fit neatly on the shelves. If I have too many ornaments for the shelves, then I have to choose which ones I like best to keep. It is up to you how much space you are willing to give over to each type of item – I have several bookshelves full of books, but some of my clients chose to have only a shelf. The point is that once you have dedicated an area, to stick to it.

“I have a craft room and it’s always such a mess, how can I keep it tidy?” Start with your vision. What is it that you would like the room to look like, how would you like to be able to use it?

Audit your supplies. I get a LOT of pushback from crafters at the suggestion that they might like to let anything go, so I suggest an Audit instead. Go through all of your supplies and see what it is that you have and think truthfully about whether or not you will use it. Are you hanging on to stuff that you bought that you will never use? Would it be better to let it go to someone who will use it? You may be surprised how much you let go if you handle everything.

Store in categories – the actual storage solution you come up with will depend on the amount you keep and your budget, but keep like with like. Don’t get hung up on fancy solutions, boxes that you already have may well be the best thing to use. Make sure that you label them well though, and possibly stick a photo on the front of the box so that you can easily see what is in it.

Do you have an organising or decluttering question for me? Either email me at rosie@ thetidycoo.com, or email Lifestyle and they will forward it to me to be answered in another edition (anonymity is guaranteed).

Maggie Fair 2023

There can be few village fairs which can match the boast of being held annually since 1587 and this alone makes Maggie Fair very unique. Not even the war years could deter the community of Garmouth & Kingston from tradition but frustratingly they were denied their fair for two years during the Covid pandemic. However, last year saw the most welcome return of the annual event and this year it is most definitely on track again.

Whilst retaining its respectful nod to history and tradition Maggie Fair has adapted, grown and moved with the times from a one-day event to a week-long programme of activities and fund raising events which are organized by a small but dedicated committee. All proceeds are reinvested into local amenities for the benefit of the community and particularly help towards the upkeep of parks, open spaces, village hall and the iconic Water Tower. Fair week events this year include Junior Discos; Open Gardens; Quiz Night; Cookery Evening; Tea & Competitions with Fair Day itself on Saturday 24th June. Family fun down in the

Garmouth Playing Field (with no admission charge) always draws a huge crowd offering something for all ages and a chance to catch up with friends and family.

So, what’s on? As well as traditional stalls, attractions include children’s fancy dress and activities, classic cars, obstacle challenge, Land Train, BBQ, beer tent, live music, Rex’s Reptiles, visiting crafters, local and visiting exhibitors Speyside Falconry, grand raffle and Village Hall teas. Maggie Fair Day is rounded off handsomely with evening fun and live music at the Golf Club by The Forty Elephants and catering by the Big Orange.

It’s quite a week – not only a great opportunity for the community to come together and show its support but a welcoming celebration to all who are looking for fun, entertainment and chance to pick up a bargain or that unique purchase.

Further details and information can be found on web page https:themaggiefair.co.uk or Facebook page Maggie Fair Garmouth or by contacting Barbara Walker, Secretary on 01343 870264

Retirement isn’t what it used to be. We’re working longer, living longer and have so many different ways to use our pension pot. All the more reason to get the experts involved

These days there’s so much flexibility around retirement. You can choose to stay invested in your pension, decide your own level of income, or even withdraw the entire pot. Buying an annuity is now another choice, rather than being non-negotiable.

Expertadviceiskey–your

retirement

couldlast30years,soyou’llneedtomake important short-andlong-termdecisions

Meanwhile, as always, greater freedom brings greater responsibility. You’ve got to make sure those retirement savings last. It’s a thorny business full of tough decisions, made even trickier by the number of options available.

Let’s look at retirement age to begin with. The cliff-edge idea of stopping work at 60 or 65 and ‘being retired’ is history. Today a phased approach is much more likely, transitioning gradually from working and saving towards leisure and spending. Most of us can do this on our terms, according to our own life plans, rather than being restricted by a pension scheme or an employer.

Visualise your retirement

Ask yourself what your retirement looks like. Then how can you make it a reality? If you’re retired already, is it as you imagined? Being ‘in retirement’ is much more than simply drawing an income. It’s also about running an efficient home, managing your tax-free cash (especially when interest rates are low) and building a sustainable income that will last your lifetime. There’s no set retirement age these days. Add to this the pressures of supporting both older and younger generations, and it’s clear a rethink is needed on how best to use your savings. To adapt to changing needs, you might need to consider other assets and income sources alongside your pension.

So what you have is a situation that’s both flexible and heavy on risk, whether you choose to dip into your pension pot or remain invested. Either way, you’ll need help and expertise to face the challenges. In retirement you’re also likely to encounter a new set of risks. For example, if you get off to a poor start when you begin drawing your income, with markets falling and returns negative, your investments will have to work much harder from the outset to maintain your desired income. Another layer of complexity in your retirement strategy is underestimating how long your money needs to last. The 100-year life is fast becoming normal, with more of us living much longer, more active lives than ever before.

The countless choices available atretirementcanbeoverwhelming

At St. James’s Place, we’re here to help you navigate these obstacles. We believe the value of advice comes from building a strong relationship over time and understanding the needs of both you and your family. We’re experts in the intricacies of modern retirement. So you can worry less and focus on the important things in life.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select, and the value can therefore go down as well as up. Ending child poverty one family at a time

Sadly, child poverty in Moray does exist. It may not be immediately apparent but there are numerous families in our community who are struggling with every aspect of daily life. It happened before Covid, during Covid and, most particularly, right now as we are in the grip of rocketing prices and economic hardship.

To combat all this is a massive undertaking but there is one organisation that is doing its very best to turn things

The Sarab family said, ‘We feel, as shareholders, that we are part of an organisation that truly helps people help themselves. These individuals and families are able to grow and thrive by building their self respect, knowledge and confidence through the programs and training provided by RFG. Our communities are enriched by this growth. This family is very proud to be shareholders in R-evolution for Good.’

around. You may not have heard of them but, without them, things would be a lot worse.

The organisation in question is R-evolution for Good, a community owned business and charity. In 2020 they released their first share offer and attracted 53 community shareholders who invested in their business and became community owners. Their second community share offer went live on 30th May to raise

between £40,000 and £60,000 to grow and develop their training and development business.

How does it work, you may ask. Well, R-evolution (or RFG) is a charitable community benefit society, which means that all the profit that is made through the business is used for good in the community, through the charitable work of RFG and the local charity Moray School Bank. RFG is a training and development business offering training in Counselling, Coaching, Management, Mental Health, Wellbeing, and Trauma. They use the profit to provide support services to individuals who may not normally be able to afford them, including counselling, coaching, and group work, making them the business for Counselling and Coaching in Moray.

Kimberley is a prime example of how progression coaching works and she has allowed

R-evolution

them to tell her story. She has, with the assistance of R-evolution for good, overcome her 17 year battle against drugs and alcohol, stemming from childhood trauma. She has now secured a full-time role as a Recovery Support Worker for Quarriers after 9 months of sobriety, an exceptional achievement. Her plans for the future are to support and encourage other addicts who are ready to take that step into a life of recovery and fulfilment through peer support and sharing of lived experience. Kimberley worked with her coach for just 6 months and fed back that she felt listened to and heard for the very first time in her life.

To get involved is quite simple: people, businesses, and community groups can buy shares in the business to invest their money. You can buy from 25 shares to 4000 shares and all share holders get 1 vote at the Annual General Meeting. Each share is valued at £1 and can be bought in multiples of 25 up to a maximum of 4000 shares; this allows there to be no majority shareholders and all shareholders are equal, 1 member =1 vote.

Their website has all the information you need to get involved. It’s really easy – just go to www.revolutionforgood. org.uk/share-offer where you can find their share offer document and the form to purchase shares. If you cannot invest, you can still help and the website will provide all the information you need to support them.

If you become a shareholder, you will invest your money in the business for a minimum of 5 years, after which you can apply to withdraw your investment. The business endeavours to offer

interest on your investment per year; this will be dependent upon the success and profitability and, as with all investments, community shares also come with a risk.

RFG will use the money raised from investment to employ a Business Development Manager who will actively grow and develop the business arm of R-evolution for Good, so that the business can use the profit to deliver its charitable support services of Counselling and Coaching in the community, making a difference to the lives of families and working to end child poverty in Moray. Since 2020 they have worked with nearly over 300 people, making change in Moray.

They would like to thank you for taking the time to find out more about their business for good and hope to hear from you soon.

Lifestyle owner/editor Rhona Patterson said “Lifestyle became a community shareholder of R-evolution for good as I totally believe in Debi and her team and what they are trying to achieve. I have witnessed the passion and commitment of Debi and her team, and I wanted to show my support, be it in a small way.”

The Buzz About Bees

There is a sound that is instantly recognisable to Scots far and wide, a sound that will have even the most composed of people flapping madly around their heads in a frantic flurry. It is a sound that will remind some of a quick sharp stab of pain and have others fearing such an experience. Bees certainly have the Marmite effect on many of us but whether we love or hate them, we all need them. Without these funny little buzzing insects pollinating our plant life, not to mention producing the most luxurious melted gold, the health of our region may well be in a critical state.

Certainly, whether we are able to keep a hive or not, we all have the opportunity to help and

support our local bees, so what are some of these best ways to help our winged comrades?

Could you plant something special? It goes without saying that a key way to help support bees is to plant flowers that they can use and which preferably have a longer season, either early or late flowering, providing a vital source when the weather is still cool. Even if you have a small garden or it is already bursting with different plant life, could you make room for one more plant, another hanging basket, window box or just a little pop plant tucked away somewhere? Aside from the well known lavender, how about planting sea holly which both butterflies and bees adore or allowing some of your herbs to flower.

The Inverness Beekeeping Association is long established in helping to support local

WILDLIFE
70

populations as well as educating people locally on how to keep their own hives or indeed to take small but effective steps to nurture bees in their spaces.

Association President Jed Russell comments, “We are a beekeeping community, based in Inverness. Our aim is to promote high quality beekeeping practices throughout the Highlands and promote the conservation of honeybees and other pollinators. We run monthly meetings between September and May where we have a guest speaker who talks about their experiences in the beekeeping industry.

“We offer an annual beginner course to get people started with beekeeping (or remind people of the basics). We also have an annual Honey Show where our members can show off their hive products, compete in the competition and sell their products. We also offer other events such as Queen Rearing courses.

“People don’t need to become a beekeeper and keep their own hive to help the bees. One of the best things that people can do is to plant a range of flowers in their garden so that bees, and other pollinators, can have access to different types of pollen and nectar all year round. Flowering currants, primroses, and lavender are all great options for bees.

“Another good thing to do is to leave one area of your garden unmowed as

many lawn weeds (such as dandelions) are excellent pollen and nectar sources in the Spring. You should also limit or avoid pesticide use in your garden as this is very harmful to bees and other friendly pollinators. Perhaps introducing a bug hotel into your garden also - this could give a home to many species of solitary bees. You can buy bug hotels in your local garden centre or easily make one yourself at home.

“It is very important that we support our local bee populations. Not just honeybees, but also other pollinator species such as: bumblebees, solitary bees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies, etc. Their pollination services are vital for our food production and the health of our surrounding environment. Almost all of our fruit and vegetable crops rely on pollination - we could not survive without pollinators.

“A combination of factors are contributing to their decline such as: mono-culture farming, pesticide and insecticide use, habitat loss and climate change. However, by doing the things mentioned above, you can help to save the bees.”

Whether you are planning to plant bee friendly plants, resist using damaging pesticides or are considering taking on a hive, this summer offers a buzzing opportunity to support our local bees no matter where you live.

FOOD & DRINK

The judges were Jill Asher, of Ashers Bakery, title sponsor of Taste of Nairn, Adam Bell, of Haim and Awa, the Instagram food influencers, and Laura Sutherland from Oakwood Cookery School.

Anew World Tattie scone Champion and Showstopper

cake winners have been crowned at a three-day festival celebrating a north-east town.

Taste of Nairn took place from April 28 to 30 and showcased over 45 businesses with hundreds of visitors attending the events.

Organised by Nairn Connects BID, it featured over 20 individual events including foraging along the river, live music events, an African BBQ, and a Cellar Raider.

Non-food retailers also got on board with kayaking, paddleboarding, needle felting and many shops offered customer discounts.

On Saturday and Sunday, Nairn Community and Arts Centre was the venue for a market featuring stalls, tasters and food and drink demonstrations.

It was also the location for the World Tattie Scone Championship, sponsored by Oakwood Cookery School. Gary Grant beat off stiff competition from 20 other contestants to take home the accolade with his gluten free tattie scone made with sweet potatoes. He served it with cream cheese, smoked salmon and balsamic pearls made with sea vegetable agar agar.

Gary, said: “It was a great experience, I like to be creative and it is great that the judges recognised that. I am speechless. The trophy will take pride of place in my house.”

On Sunday, the Showstopper Cake Contest, sponsored by this very magazine took place. Amateur bakers were asked to create cakes with a Royal theme.

Eight cakes were entered but it was Sarah Hollifield in the adult category and nine-yearold Isla MacLennan in the junior category who scooped the awards.

Rhona Patterson, editor of Lifestyle Magazine said: “Once again it was such a tough decision. The standard of cakes was excellent, and the detail was amazing. It was particularly difficult to make the choice between the junior entries. The work they put in was outstanding.”

Speaking about the event overall, Lucy Harding, Nairn BID manager said she was delighted with the turnout: “We have had a fabulous weekend not just at the community centre but at other events across the town. One event that we know of, sold out their stock in an hour and other premises, we are told have been really busy.”

you struggling being self-employed or getting your new business off the ground?

Being self-employed isn’t easy, so don’t give up too soon. I’ve owned many businesses, starting out with a franchise, then my own start-ups, growing them into SME’s. There have been good and bad years, great mindset times around business growth and other times when I have wondered what on earth am I doing which led me to wear two hats sometimes….

Yes, I’ve been back into employment multiple times to boost my income for short periods (why not!). I was lucky sometimes I could do the two jobs side by side and other times I actually had staff to run the business for me. But being an employee again always ended up with me realising that running a business is actually great, early on, it can be hard financially with little time off, but it’s worth it, so stick at it if you have the passion.

However, if you’re feeling low, isolated in your business or thinking “have I made the right decision” here are some top tips:

• Get a mentor/coach or do a businessrelated course that will help solve some of your struggles.

• Go networking and meet others, join support groups, you’ll soon find out you’re not alone and help is out there.

• Read motivational books or industry specific books to give you ideas of how to progress.

• Don’t beat yourself up, if you’re struggling with isolation think about coworking spaces or just going to the café for a few hours.

• Don’t be afraid to consider getting a job if you’re having financial difficulties; look at contracts, part time or fixed term roles that might fit around your business.

• Get professional help if you’re struggling to pay bills.

• If what you have been doing for the last 6 months isn’t working, change it. It could be the marketing is wrong or there isn’t a market for what you’re selling, do some research, re-evaluate and test the market again.

• Take some time away from the business. Think of your short-term goals, put a strategy in place and come back fighting. If

Moray event celebrates 999 services

Emergency heroes will be honoured at the third Moray Blue Light Festival on Saturday, 24th June at UHI Moray. The valuable role played by the police, fire, RAF, coastguard services and many more will be highlighted during the festival from 12pm – 3pm at the Alexander Graham Bell Centre, UHI Moray in Elgin.

The event was initially held in 2019 and organised by students on UHI Moray’s Events Management Course. The event was successfully brought back after the pandemic last year and is now organised by UHI Moray with the now graduated students still being involved in the planning and implementation of the event.

‘Celebrating the services, educating the public’ is the theme of the afternoon. “This is a chance to meet your real-life heroes and see what they do on a daily basis.” said Lorna Leil, Events Co-Ordinator for UHI Moray. “We are hoping to raise awareness of the services and also bring the local community together to celebrate them.”

As well as the well-known 999 services, in attendance will be North East Rider Volunteers, 2622 Squadron from RAF Lossiemouth, Scottish Charity Air Ambulance, Cadets and local organisations who offer help and support such as Moray Wellbeing Hub, Moray Co-Responders, Car Seat Safety Moray, Keirans Legacy and many more. Basic CPR will be taught by SAS Wildcat and Save A Life Scotland throughout the event.

MORAY BLUE LIGHT FESTIVAL

There will be children’s inflatables and rides, facepainting, some child friendly vendors and a huge array of food stands. UHI Moray’s Hospitality and Tourism Academy will be providing cupcakes for decoration, and Fika Child and Family Centre will be running 2 Moo Music sessions during the day.

“The previous 2 events were very successful, with around 1500 people attending last year” said Lorna “Sirens were ringing around the carpark as youngsters were allowed experience inside of the emergency vehicles – including being locked in the back of a police car!”

The services who appeared in previous years are eager to return and get involved with the public again. A previous exhibitor at both events, North East Rider volunteer, Patrick Costello, said “The event was amazing. I don’t think we expected this amount of interest.” He explained the opportunity for the awareness of the group was invaluable.

Over the last six years we have had many fabulous competition prizes. I am always delighted to receive feedback from the winners, telling me how much they have enjoyed their prize.

Lorna Ewen was the lucky winner of the Memory Bear from Shona of Memory Bespoke Creations in the February/March issue and Lorna very kindly e-mailed me with her story and some pictures.

Lorna said “It is a coincidence really, I had been up my loft looking for something, and came across a lovely dress I had kept of my late mothers, which must be about 40 years old. I washed it and it looked like new. I only try competitions that take my interest and I saw this one in the last edition of the Lifestyle magazine, that I really enjoy, and entered. I couldn’t believe I had won, I felt it was meant to be.

I met up with Shona who is a lovely lady and very creative, she used the material and the buttons to create the most lovely bear and incorporated the tapestry of a key ring belonging to my late dad and added a pocket to hold a small keepsake also of my dad’s. I would just like to give a big thank you to Shona Memory Bespoke

Creations and highly recommend her business”. Thank you to Lorna for sharing her story and we are so glad she now has her beautiful Memory Bear.

You could be the next lucky winner of a Lifestyle competition prize, just remember to tell me the codes and don’t forget your contact details. This issue as always, has some fabulous prizes. Will you be the lucky winner of a pair of weekend tickets for Speyfest, I know last year’s winners had a blast.

First opportunity to see Skerryvore is at Portsoy Boat Festival on the 1st July if you win the two tickets kindly donated

If you read the Beach Hut food review, I’m sure you will definitely want to be the winner of lunch for two that they have generously offered as a prize.

A gorgeous Hearts of Grampian Teddy Bear is another fabulous prize offered by the Keith Kilt & Textile Centre. If you buy their raffles online they have some more incredible prizes.

If you fancy going to any of the Games and Shows advertised in this issue, then enter this one and you’ll have your choice.
