the magic of a cosy home

Time to retreat into the warmth of a cosy home and snuggle up. We all take pride in our homes but during the summer months we tend to be out and about and the style of the home doesn’t seem to bother us too much. Autumn sees us all being a tiny bit critical of our nests. Out of sight is out of mind but when you are hauled up in a lack lustre home it could get you down a bit.

Lighting

“We love and we love bringing it to you” The more time you spend at home, the more those little jobs that could have, should have or would have been done, start to niggle away at us. Autumn is when the excuses end and we look for some quick fixes to make home a sanctuary once more. Autumn can come as a bit of a shock every year, don’t you think? We add bits and pieces in a haphazard way to try and lift our plummeting spirits, often with no real plan to creating a particular look.

The Light This all may sound a little like Seasonal Affective Disorder, but I have promised myself I won’t be caught out this year! Outside may be dark but my interior will be co-ordinated, welcoming, well planned and beautiful. I’m aiming for a fresh, cosy comforting and cohesive look this Autumn. If you are looking for a better way to bring that autumnal cosy feeling to your home without the style by-pass we may be able to offer some inspiration. Follow us ‘Into the Light’, no, not in some spiritual way, literally follow me Into the Light! Our fabulous quarterly fix of all things interior design related for home and business. Illuminating trend & style tips, we have it all for you!

A comfy sofa, chair or two, some oversized beanbags, some restful colours and plants will help to start your journey to a tranquil experience. How could you light such a room? Lighting a quiet, tech free room is of course a matter of taste but we would recommend the ability to vary light levels for what you are doing in the room. Consider having layers of light with both floor and table lamps, which will also be great for providing the right light for reading and avoiding unnecessary strain on the eyes. A floor lamp is great for adding quiet ambient light and adds depth to the room by illuminating the darker corners. Table lamps offer unrivalled versatility and can be moved around the room with ease to suit your needs.

The Light

We live in a world swamped with technology, which in most ses make our lives richer and than ever before, however the uzz of the latest notification from device and the urge to check in eBook posts means we have very peace and quiet.

Multifunctional lights can work well here; such as scissor armed wall lights. Concertinaed against the wall they make a great ambient light and when extended next to a favoured chair, they could become your reading light.

Think about how you will use the room, adjust your furniture to suit your design and match your lighting to the layout. A ceiling pendant in the centre of the room is a practicality you must include, but perhaps choose one that you can use with a dimmer switch to ensure that you can use it bright when you play the family board game, but when relaxing or listening to music you can turn it down low to allow for quiet contemplation. Consider the colours and texture you find relaxing – antiqued metals with a matching inner shade teamed with a warm bulb can add an instant warm and cosy atmosphere. Perhaps the one piece of tech you should consider is some smart lighting, great for creating just the right mood. See our piece later in the magazine. Add some blankets, cushions and a few favourite photos and you are ready to go tech-free and really de-stress. Enjoy!!!

Banish that technology, pick up a good book, even for just an hour or so a day, to feel the flood of relaxation and calm come in to your life

It’s not just a descriptive word however; it’s an entire concept from the Danes which you’re going to want to know about. There’s a reason Denmark is known as the happiest country in the world! So what is this concept? First and foremost, it’s about you. What makes you feel relaxed and happy? Anything that takes away the stress and concerns of everyday life can be considered hygge. Often it’s about creating a space, your space. Dimming the lights, lighting a fire and getting yourself under a woollen blanket with a good book – that’s Hygge.

The Light

r home ygge?

What? I hear you say. Okay so it’s pronounced “hoo-ga”, it’s a Danish word that loosely translated into English means “cosiness”.

Surrounding yourself with family and friends for an overdue get together with an array of life’s comforts – that’s Hygge. Be kind to yourself and give yourself the attention and special time you deserve. As the autumn equinox has already marked the end of summer and the beginning of autumn we are now getting those shorter days and longer nights. Things are beginning to get cooler and soon we’ll be looking for the warmth indoors that makes us feel snug, any time of year is good for Hygge but now it’s the high season for it. Aside from getting that heating turned on and popping on your favourite warm fleece or jacket you’ve been holding off from wearing for the last few months, lighting is the perfect way to get things warm and cosy. Warm colours and control over the light levels is a huge benefit. Our new range of Jedi lighting products are an LED line that can be operated by remote control and give you control over the colour and brightness of your lights. Not only that but they also have various presets including “candle light” which gives the warm tone of a flame, read more about them later in the magazine. Speaking of candles, aren’t they a welcoming and comforting sight? Particularly as winter takes a hold, we have a great range of flame less LED candles which are very effective with all the benefits and none of the drawbacks of a real candle! Placing a few of these around your warmly lit room is sure to make you feel Hygge. There’s little else in life that makes you feel cosier than being inside a warm subtly lit room, hot chocolate in hand, able to hear the harsh elements outside. We’ve written blogs in the past about making your home cosy for autumn and getting winter ready but Hygge can benefit not only your home but business too! It is essential, particularly during the colder months that hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars go that extra mile to bring the comfort levels up. Bringing in some shaggy rugs, lighting the roaring fires and possibly a new seasonal menu to introduce more comfort foods would be highly recommended. Autumn and winter has us longing for a sense of security and wellbeing, the hospitality sector would benefit highly from bringing a little more home away from home. What are you waiting for? Get into Hygge!

BRING

street style inside and create your individual style So many restaurants and eateries have a bland, boring, neutral decor that add little to the dining experience. “You eat with your eyes” so the saying goes, so having some interesting and engaging environment that complements your food and style should be the goal. Few restaurants have done this better than Chit Chaat Chai. The wildly successful pop-up concept opened the doors to its two-floor South West London home in April this year. The menu sees Indian street eats - or chaat - paired with mouth-watering cocktails and mocktails. Cooked at street stalls, chaat is an essential part of eating out in South Asia. High in flavour and light on the stomach, Chaat are small dishes eaten as treat food for family days out or weekends with friends. Craving this ‘best of foods’ and with little on offer in the UK, founders Tania Rahman and Dhruv Haria have produced a flavour-fest of a menu at Chit Chaat Chai for all to enjoy.

To capture the energy and enthusiasm of the brand, Avocado Sweets Design Studio worked wit them to replicate the innovation of the recipes in the look and feel of the restaurant.

Taking cues from Indian typography and the colour and vibrancy of Indian daily life, the design i feast for the eyes and includes some trademark Avocado Sweets innovations.

As Evros Agathou, Creative Director of Avocado Sweets explains: “Taking a conce stall to restaurant needs a carefully thought-out transition. The look has to conve permanence of the brand without losing the youthful energy of the pop-up scene

INSTALLED We have hand picked some of our perfect hotel lighting into When it comes collections to make to decorating our own room many it simple for you!

of us feel compelled to create something tidy and coordinated, and while there are many great styles which urge on somewhat the opposite; today we’ll stick with the former. We’ve all spent a night in a hotel and on one or two occasions been a bit envious of how well structured the room is; why can’t our room at home look like this? Well, housekeeping aside – it can!

changing any tired looking curtains and bed covers, good hotels are renowned for having crisp, fresh looking curtains and bed covers. You may even find yourself in luck, check your airing cupboard! If you find some bed covers that match the room then you’ve got a good starting point on looking for some matching curtains, that’s if the current ones fail to brush up nicely.

Looking for a bit of modern glam? The Luther family is perfect. With a range of available colours in antique brass, polished chrome, satin chrome and black chrome it’s a range that’s easy to accommodate. It’s available as a table lamp, floor lamp, wall light, double wall light, 12 or 20 light pendant as well as semi flush ceiling lights including a 4, 6 and 10 light version.

Keeping things minimalist is the best way to stick to the hotel look. Don’t over accessorise or leave out too many sentimental items. Most hotel rooms feature some artwork, why not make your family photos yours? Things are beginning to shape up. There’s something missing though, something that all hotels have in every room that brings the whole thing together. Ah yes! Lights! Lights are a great way of coordinating a room. From floor lamps, table lamps, wall lights to ceiling lights, there are ranges or “families” which look at their best together.

CAIRO RANGE HOTEL PACK

If you are underwhelmed with your current look, most of the time you’ll find it’s actually a case of boredom, the same things in the same layout can get dull. If you have the room to manoeuvre things around then do so! Just be careful not to place things in such a way that it lessens your free space, treasure what free square metres of flooring you have. Oops, you’ve moved things around and find that you where a little lack lustre in your initial paint job! Because “no one’s going to see behind the bed anyway”, right? It’s okay because that bring us onto our next point, a paint touch up. Hopefully you still have some remnants of the original paint in the shed or can at least remember what it was called. Applying a few touch ups or a small refresh coat can be hugely beneficial and bring back your rooms former vibrancy. Wow, forgot that’s how it used to look!

Using light families keeps things structured and looks great. Just like those high end hotels! The variations available are plentiful, suiting themes from traditional to modern, so there will be a great option to suit your room. We’ll go into a few suggestions below, some of these would be better suited to a more boutique hotel as the majority of hotels may opt for something far less stylish! However as it’s going into your room, let’s make it a little more personal.

LUTHER RANGE HOTEL PACK

PILA RANGE HOTEL PACK

Perhaps your room is better suited to a more industrial twist on a contemporary theme. In which case the Funk range would be a good choice. Available in a table lamp, floor lamp, wall light, 3 light ceiling light and 5 light ceiling light. You’ll be ecstatic to know that we have begun to launch our very own “hotel packs“! These consist of products all within the same product range for, wait for it… A discounted price! The packs contain: 1 x Table Lamp, 1 x Floor Lamp and 2 x Wall Lights. You’ll notice they are “missing” a ceiling light, this is because most hotels either opt for recessed spot lights or often nothing at all! We feel the ceiling is therefore somewhat neglected when it comes to hotels, you can however choose to add a ceiling light as a separate item at the basket. Easy peasy!

The naturalistic theme of the design can be enhanced with the conjunction of natural material. What better suitor than wood? The rustic outdoor feel it gives is ideal for keeping a bedroom feeling fresh, the Nixon ceiling pendant is perfect for this. Colour and or pattern coordinating is also important, unless you’re going for a vibrant carnival assortment of colours then greens, blues, whites and yellows are key here. The Prairie table lamp does a great job of matching colour and pattern whilst the Dillon table lamp shows a matching accent of colour can be just as effective. The idea of keeping things feeling airy and fresh is one to stick to, transparent materials are a great way of doing this and none do it better than glass. Subtly coloured glass ensures you stay in keeping with the colour scheme whilst not making the room feel opaque and over dominating the room.

However, with advancements to LED technology Smart Lighting is here and it brings a whole new level of control to your home. Once you try it, you’ll never want to be without it! Many of our customers feel confused by the colour temperatures of regular bulbs, warm white, natural white, daylight, cool white; one customer said “I thought white was just white!”. Now, not only can you choose the correct white tone for your needs, but you can also choose from a range of colours and effects to suit the changing requirements of modern rooms. From the comfort of your favourite chair with your very own remote control in hand, you have the option for relaxing / romantic / ocean / forest / fireplace and even party lights as well as the wide spectrum of colours. You can also adjust how bright they are; all are dimmable. In addition to these moods and colours you can ease yourself into the day by gently increasing the light in your room over 20 minutes, just like a gentle sunrise (great for those of us that don’t like mornings), or lower the light over 20 minutes to ease you to sleep. DRAMATIC DARKS

Never before have we had such freedom of choice to create our own unique settings. We’re socialising and entertaining more and more in the comfort of our homes and strive to create the perfect ambience for our guests.

Great options are the simple but elegant GLOW IN A DOME (A) table lamp, perfect for this type of colour scheme with it’s translucent shade. Available in smokey grey, chestnut brown olive green, deep blue and clear and in 4 sizes. Wall sconces can also be an ideal choice here as they will showcase your choice of wallpaper – dark wallpaper with a subtle metallic design really comes to life here and adds interest to the room. The RENIOR range (B) of semi circular wall washers come with a range of neutral and coloured silk shades that can create the perfect compliment to your decor. Remember colour is the perfect antidote to dark colours.

The Light

In today’s world of bustling noise and colour, we are spoilt for choice in the variety of colours and textures readily available.

Ceiling lights in this scheme best as multi arm or chandelier style to add additional light to the room, but add a dimmer to ensure control. For a different twist, take a look at the HUCKLEBERRY cluster pendant (C) which has 7 pedants that can be position with the aid of ceiling hooks and draped to the perfect spot. Dark deep colours are often inspired by the old masters of art , take a look over the page for some of our picks inspired by masterpieces of our time. Read on . . . . . .

A few years ago, it seemed that the modern trend was based on the neutral colour palette. Magnolia, beiges, creams and pale browns were the staple colours of many homes and whilst maintaining a calm environment, there was little you could do to change the ambience of the room when you needed. A trend that is now emerging is a return to the theatrical darker colours, teamed with vintage design classics with a modern twist and luxurious fabrics and textures. Wallpapers in dark colours teamed with heavy, velvet curtains and soft furnishings and you start to understand that instead of feeling oppressive, it will feel sumptuous and gratifying. There are no rules as to the colours you can use; blacks, greys teamed with deep blues, purples or dark red tones work well with perhaps a hint of metallic sheen to accent the effect. Dark colours will not tend to ‘clash’ in the same way that paler colours can. Painting ceilings in a darker colour really adds some drama to the look, but don’t go too dark – a mid-grey colour will still bounce a bit of natural light around the room which you will be thankful for. The key thing that you must get right for this look is the lighting to ensure that you avoid a cave-like feel. You don’t need a large room to perfect this look – in fact a smaller room can actually benefit from this look when teamed with clever lighting. Firstly, we need to avoid using just a ceiling light which leave the corners in the dark. Create pockets of light with table and floor lamps in the corners of your room.

VIBRANT CARNIVAL Bold, bright and a bonanza of party fever World events have a significant bearing on interior design trends. Think back to the Olympic Games in London 2012, how many of us had red, white and blue items in our home or something with the union flag to show our national pride in hosting the games.

With the XXXI Olympiad having descended on Brazil and the carnival capital of the world Rio de Jeneiro, we predict this is likely to have a similar effect on interior design. Expect to see an increase in bright vibrant colours eye popping colours contrasted with deep greens of the rainforests permeating your home. Accessories will see a mix of exotic surfaces such as feather, fronds, flowers and tempting forbidden fruits. Bright pinks, hot oranges, big blooms in your choice of paints, wall coverings and soft furnishings will help you celebrate life.

Brazil has an eclectic landscape from it’s densely populated cities to it’s beautiful rainforests and this is reflected in it’s culture. Brazil is also blessed with some iconic landmarks such as Christ the Redeemer and Copacabana beach, paces high on every travellers bucket list. If you are brave populate your room with a mix of clashing colours reminiscent of a Brazilian carnival, you may feel at first that it looks disjointed and a little mis-matched, but like the hoards of street performers all doing different things and wearing different coloured outfits, the bright tones soon blend together into a striking scene.

In larger rooms, you can intersperse some foliage of different greens to break up to look and bring in that touch of deep rainforest. You can achieve this with natural living plants if you are the kind of person that has the time, commitment and inclination to look after them. If, like me, you always seem to kill off your plant life then perhaps opt for some faux foliage. I particularly like the Abigail Ahern range which is unbelievably realistic, so much so that I have mistaken them for the real thing time and time again. In smaller rooms you may be better to start with a more neutral backdrop and introduce colour though your soft furnishings such as a few well places cushions, curtains and throws. Consider some big blooms in contrasting colours to bring the whole scheme together.

Be confident with colour We Brits are many things as a nation, stoic, proud and patriotic, yet we can sometimes feel a little conservative when it comes to home decor. Many UK homes look a little, well boring to put not too fine a point on it. We sometimes lack that continental confidence to splash out with colour preferring a colour palette of neutrals, browns, greens and perhaps the occasional excursion into reds for the more extravagant! Shake off those Victorian roots and burst into this century with a fresh and vibrant hit of colour in your home, you might surprise yourself at what you have been missing all this time. Now, you don’t have to throw acid bright colours at every soft furnishing , wall and accessory to make an impact. You could consider starting with a white or neutral wall covering, this works great in smaller rooms and you can bring out a pop of colour by mixing up your furnishings. Many designers will work on a ratio of 60 / 30 / 10 with 60% of a main colour, 30% a secondary colour and 10% for an accent colour, so this principle should bring the perfect blend of balance for your room. If you are feeling nervous, the 60% bias could be in favour of the more neutral tone. To find colours that work together why not try using a colour wheel? What ever your choice of main colour, choose something from the opposite side of the wheel as a secondary colour and one or two from an opposing quadrant for your accent colours. In home interiors, clashing accent colours can work really well to add some zest and interest to a room so be brave and get confident with colour in your home, we are sure you will love the results. *Roomset images courtesy of Harlequin from their 2016 range of wallcoverings, fabrics and soft furnishings

O R D E R from chaos With the tiniest bit of space within your home, you can create a great functional style statement. It’s really simple and relatively cheap to do. Some of these little masterpieces are attractive little additions to any room and add that style statement that may even inspire a total new look for your room. We’ve selected some items from our select accessories ranges to dress the desks. We’d also suggest using things you find around your own home or pre-loved items from flea markets. You’ll notice that there’s one item on every desk that we consider a must, yes - it’s a lamp! You simply have to have a lamp. Why?… glad you asked this. The contrast between a bright computer screen and the dark of the room around can cause strain as your eye moves between the screen and a book or task that you look back to away from the screen. The addition of a lamp helps balance that contrast and it’s allegedly good at preventing eye fatigue. To be honest, I think it’s as much about creating a great looking desk; shallow aren’t I?! Let’s face it, a little light on the desk is a welcoming site and I personally, need all the encouragement I can to get back to work. Even if you are a driven individual and you don’t need the motivation to get back to work that I do, lamps are pretty, add personality and functionality.

y the year 2020, it has been estimated that almost half of the working population will be working from home. I guess technology means we can work from almost anywhere, the debating whether that’s a good or bad thing could go on and on... but I won’t bore you all with my views on that. Needless to say, most of use are guilty of checking our work emails at home from time to time. Those who do work from home often find creating that ‘work space’ can be a challenge. The UK has some of the smallest homes in Europe and space is often already at a premium. A designated work area is a must if your home is to be a haven away from the pressures of work, but don’t let work dominate the space. Carving a little space from the family home has implications too, you may have to devote a part of the premium space in your home to the office and the overall look of your home can be impaired by this. We’ll show you a few clever ways to keep your home office functional, fun and most importantly on trend. Just a few little easily accommodated touches and you’ll soon be ready to create some calm from the chaos of home working. Firstly lets look at the desk area. We’ll take the same desk and show you ten ways to style the desk for a fresh on trend look. Creating a home study area is simple and relatively inexpensive.

Remember; if you are at your desk for long periods, you’ll need a break and a change of scenery from time to time too. OK so we hopefully feel a little more inspired by the desk let talk position of the desk. Will it be in a corner of the lounge or the attic?

WWW.

INTrends

The growth of technological advances means that we can all work from pretty much anywhere; be it the train, the beach or home.

The Light

It’s a great idea to have your study area in your living space and is especially important for children to use the computer whilst with the family. You could of course sit with the laptop perched on your knee, but for youngsters, it’s better to be able to keep a watchful eye on the screen as they work and for that, sitting at a desk is the ideal.

Employers of a home worker, need to ensure that the employee has good amount of space to work and that the area has the correct amount of privacy for the work they will be undertaking. So, if you’re just about to pitch your suggestion to the boss being able to show this consideration may help you to be at home a little more! Drawing those physical or not so physical boundaries to home working is import ant for you and those that share the space you live in with, blurring the edges between work time and home time is simply a complete no, no.

The type of home office can vary from one home to the next depending on the space you are able to spare. The work you do and of course, your budget, also come into play. You may wish to turn over more of your home for a working office, especially if your clients visit you at home, however if the office is for homework or a hobby a desk you may be less likely to want this to dominate your living space. If space is tight look at which parts of your home is currently under used. The spare bedroom, attic, under the stairs are great but also look outside too. If the garage or shed could be converted, this may too be an option.

Staying motivated and focused on the tasks that you need to complete can be a challenge for the home worker. It it so easy to be distracted by the lure of social media, online shopping, even the good old goggle box! Household chores such as the hovering and dusting can sometimes feel like a welcome distraction from the work you really should be doing. Our advice would be to treat each work day just as you would for going to the office (just without the commute!). Get dressed, stick to a work plan, schedule breaks and make sure everyone else in the household respects that you are at work! If you are not that focused there are numerous web browser add on’s that can set time limits on certain websites and stop your straying mind! Other factors that you should consider could be insurance. Your home insurance policy may not cover you for items of equipment etc so it might be a good idea to check with your insurance company to see if any additional premiums are required for the level of cover you require. Overall, the most important factor of working from home is proactive communication. If you are out of sight, you could be out of mind for your boss, colleagues and clients. Maintaining effective communication of your whereabouts, workloads whilst adhering to deadlines will ensure that everyone is confident in the maintenance of your productivity. Despite all the pitfalls, half of the population can’t be wrong, free up some time, beat the rat race and find that elusive work life balance so many of us search for. Just make sure your workspace is lit the right way!

Often these spaces have to double up as family or other home spaces so making sure there is sufficient storage to put all of Over the page we have some suggestions what ever your home or personal your work things away for the day is really style might be. important, in our increasingly paperless society this is becoming less of an issue put you are still bound to have some bits of paper, note pads etc hanging around that need to be hidden away, even if it is to draw a line under your working time. If you have a larger budget, you could perhaps build a room in the garden; it’s a really great use of space and it looks great when you have clients visit! Keep it light and airy and make sure you have heating or you’ll never want to venture there in the cooler months. There is something very clever about making a small neglected space work smarter. I especially like these boxed in spaces.

INTrends

To implement this trend keep things light and think tactile. If something fails to serve a purpose – remove it. Over accessorising is contradictory to this trend and believe us when we say a clean space brings calm! A great place to start is at ground level, a light wooden floor is iconic of the Scandinavian look and it gives a fresh natural feel which often helps to make the room feel larger. Quite often, you will find yourself surprised at how nice the wooden slats beneath your living room carpet are, and with a little work on them, you could have a Scandi floor to be proud of!

Don’t be afraid to show off your wooden surfaces. Wood is a big part of this design trend so any desks, tables, chairs or bookcases that are made of wood need to be on show. Pale coloured wood is the typical look, if needed apply a bit of grey, blue or white paint wash to any wood that might have a bit too much of a yellow tone. Cooler colours are key in the Scandinavian look. There are many products which continue with the wooden feature which are perfect for this interior trend. This look focuses very much so on “outdoor living” and no other material achieves this as much as wood. Consider a wooden floor lamp such as an Easel or Pyramid teamed with a Gaucho pendant to suspend over your dining room table. You could also add to the feel of outdoor living by adding a bit of greenery, staying wary not to over accessorise, however a plant or two on a shelf or window sill wouldn’t go amiss. If you’re longing for even more of the outdoors and only have one small window in your room then a great little trick to use is popping a mirror on the opposing wall. We all like to make our rooms feel larger than they really are, and a great way to do this is by adding a mirror or two.

WWW.

Man made materials such as acrylics and thermoplastic are not an uncommon sight in a Scandi room, often featuring bold lines and simple shapes. Expect to see them feature in various furniture from chairs and tables to the lighting! Just look at the beautiful Thistle pendant below.

The Light

The Scandinavian style focuses on natural materials, simplicity and functionality. If you needed an excuse to de-clutter look no further!

Thankfully mirrors are a common feature in the Scandinavian theme, so add one to your room to get that illusion of added space - if it’s opposite a window, you’ll get the added bonus of the illusion of the outdoors being indoors!

WWW.

WWW.

WWW.

WWW.

Although the architecture of your house may not be something you can alter you can change the layout of furniture for this next idea; clean lines. Traditionally Scandinavian interiors display very clean lines in its architecture and furniture. This is another way to keep things uncluttered and purposeful. Arranging things in an orderly and structured fashion is particular to the trend and keeps your room feeling tidy; ideal!
