Publisher’s Letter This is the second edition of our book on luxury hotels and resorts in Thailand, and we have made terrific progress. We have added more island resorts and increased the size, content and elegance of the book. I have been writing about luxury hotels and resorts for over a decade as a function of my work with five-star golf resorts around the world. “Wow,” the golfer would write: “Would love to play. Where do I stay?” And the writing about Places to Stay began. When my sedulous partner, Khun Bew, suggested we produce this luxury hotel and resort guide for Thailand last year, I thought it would be a great opportunity. I was able to delve deeper into the superb options the traveler has when visiting the cities, beaches, coastlines, mountains, islands and jungles of Thailand – two thousand kilometers from north to south. So many splendid, diverse choices. Well, I flew, drove, walked and talked day-after-day to complete the inspections. I had many thrilling surprises. And made new friends. I aimed at personalizing each review so that the article would not seem like an extension of a Web site. I wanted the reader to know that I had scrutinized and mined part of the soul of each property. Our task was made easier by the thoughtful cooperation and enthusiasm of our steady Sponsor, Coca-Cola (Thainamthip) and it’s ace sales VP (and my friend and colleague), Tanaporn Khositaphai – who likes fast sports cars, plays avid golf, and sells a lot of refreshing Coke! My special thanks to Jessica Wells, my partner from the US (who is teaming with me this year to produce our second Berkshires Lifestyle & Golf Guide in historic New England). She flew over and spent a month editing, designing and polishing this book – adding style and luster. And, of course, my thanks to my indefatigable partner, Kineeya (Bew) Somsuan, whose vision gave birth to this comprehensive book and whose buoyant enthusiasm and extraordinary drive brought it to fruition. Dedicated. Professional. Nonpareil.

T

hailand, the only Southeast Asian nation never to have been colonized by European powers, is a constitutional monarchy whose current head of state is HM Bhumibol Adulyadej. A unified Thai kingdom has existed since the mid-14th century, and Thailand was known as Siam until 1939, when it officially became the Kingdom of Thailand. Geography Thailand is the 50th largest country in the world. Located just 15 degrees north of the equator, Thailand has a tropical climate, and temperatures typically range from 19 to 38 degrees C (66-100 F). Thailand’s largest peak, Doi Inthanon, is 2,565 meters (8,415 ft) tall. The coastline of Thailand is 3,219 km long.Thailand’s longest shared border is with Myanmar (Burma), stretching 1,800 km. Weather

The weather in Thailand is generally hot and humid: typical of its location within the tropics. Generally speaking, Thailand can be divided into three seasons: “hot” season, rainy season and “cool” season, though Thailand’s geography allows visitors to find suitable weather somewhere in the country throughout the year. Population The population of Thailand comprises of roughly 65 million citizens, the majority of whom are ethnically Thai, though peoples of Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mon, Khmer, Burmese and Lao origin are also represented to varying degrees. Approximately 7 million citizens live in the capitol city, Bangkok, though this number

varies seasonally and is otherwise difficult to accurately count. Area Thailand has an approximate geographical area of 514, 000 sq km (200,000 sq miles). and 2,230 sq km of water. This makes Thailand roughly equivalent in size to Spain. Capitol : Bangkok People The vast majority (roughly 80%) of Thailand’s nearly 65 million citizens are ethnically Thai. The remainder consists primarily of peoples of Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mon, Khmer, Burmese and Lao decent. Of the 7 million citizens who live in the capitol city, Bangkok, there is a greater diversity of ethnicities, including a large number of expatriate residents from across the globe. Other geographic distinctions of the population include a Muslim majority in the south near the Malaysian border, and hill tribe ethnic groups, such as the Hmong and Karen, who live in the northern mountains. Language More than 92% of the population speaks Thai or one of it’s regional dialects. While the Thai language is the official language of Thailand, as a result of its cosmopolitan capitol city and established tourism infrastructure, English is spoken and understood throughout much of the land. Religion 94.6% of Thais are Buddhist, 4.6% of Thais are Muslim, 0.7% of Thais are Christian.

PHUKET What comes into the mind of travellers when we talk about sea, sun and sand? Phuket must definitely be one of the answers. A number of exciting activities can be found on this island, located approximately 862 kilometers south of Bangkok. There are only two seasons – the green season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). In the early days of regional maritime trade, the cape of Phuket was locally referred to as Jung Ceylon, while locals called it Thalang, which evolved to be the name of the main town to the north of the island. As the perfect stopover sheltering traders from monsoons, Jung Ceylon welcomed merchants from India, Persia, Arabia, Burma, China and also Siam. In 1785, Thalang town was surrounded by Burmese troops who invaded the coastal area. It was under the leadership of Chan, the widow of the governor, and her sister, Muk, who united the local residents and successfully fought and drove the invaders out of Phuket. It took over 30 days for the defending troops of Phuket, under the command of Chan and Muk, to claim their victory. As a result of such heroic deeds, noble titles were granted to Chan and Muk as Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, respectively. They are still highly respected by Phuket residents today. The island’s long history has shaped the present Phuket with its diverse ethnic groups, culture, architectural influence and fine cuisine. These attributes have made it a complete tourist destination that offers a lot more beyond its natural heritage of sea, sand, forest and world-renowned diving sites.

A Splendid Business Model

T

his is an uplifting, beguiling (and charming) resort success story: a burgeoning hospitality conglomerate with its expanding business tendrils wrapping around the (twin) palms, beaches and breezes of Phuket. On the northwestern shore of this vacation island, this a testimony to style, verve, cheer, munificence and solid governance. And, for me, it was a delightful reunion. I had met the Swedish owners (who dabbled in two nearby hotels years previously) and many of the Thai staff of 80 (40 are still at the resort!) when this sleek, contemporary and refined resort first opened in 2004, weeks before the unexpected, late-December tsunami ravaged the beaches of Phuket. Fortunately, the arcing inlet of Surin Bay and its resorts were spared damage, but not the pain: Twinpalms – a scant 15 kilometers north of pummeled Patong Beach and a scant whisper away from a wrecked Kamala Beach – valiantly became a first-class hospice,

Right out of the box – in its rookie season – the staff displayed the compassion and generosity that has become the hallmark of this resort and hospitality corporation. Twinpalms had participated in my first Thailand publication (Lihn’s Best of Thailand Golf Guide 2004) and I continued to visit the resort, the restaurants and spa. The GM, Olivier Gibaud, a Swiss-French expat, who had worked in high-end Asia resorts for 14 years, helped open the Twinpalms. He has driven its success for a decade – far beyond the

KRABI

Krabi Province, which lies along the coast of the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand, is a top tourist destination as a result of its plentiful natural attractions including: white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, extensive coral reefs, numerous caves and waterfalls and over 130 islands, including Koh Lanta and the jewels of the Andaman coast, the six islands of Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park. While not the top destination in and of itself, Krabi Town is a charming provincial capital located along the banks of a river that leads to the nearby Andaman Sea. Consequently, Krabi is an important port city for both local fishermen as well as boats transporting visitors to the nearby attractions, including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Railey Beach.

KOH LANTA Koh Lanta lies on the west coast of the Andaman Sea between Krabi and Phi Phi Island. It is a large island measuring 6 km wide and over 30 km long, with nine beaches along the sunset coast. Koh Lanta features stunning scenery, fantastic white sandy beaches (with coastlines which have more than 70 small islands), forests, coral reefs and under-water life. Stretching from the southernmost district of Krabi province, Koh Lanta consists of 52 islands. The two largest islands are Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi. The other islands are of various sizes, many of which are surrounded by beautiful coral reefs such as Koh Ha, Koh Rok and Koh Hai (or Koh Ngai).

SAMUI

oh Samui is the third largest island in Thailand after Phuket and Koh Chang. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 35 km northeast of Surat Thani, it has a population of 65,000 and welcomes 1.5 million tourists annually.

It was isolated with few roads until the early 1970s, when the 25 km journey from one side of the island to the other took a day over mountainous central jungles. Now, the various lowland and coastal areas are connected by a single 51 km road, running mostly along the coastline and encircling the island. No hotel chains existed 15 years ago. Santiburi Duset served the new golf course 10 years ago. The Minor Group launched their first Anantara Hotel, and in 2010, the Four Seasons. Today, Conrad, Starwood, InterContinental, Banyan Tree and Marriott are among the brands that add luster to the island. Samui’s weather is relatively dry. The heaviest precipitation is typically from October to November. Samui’s economy is based, primarily, on a successful tourist industry, as well as exports of coconut and rubber. Samui Airport is a private airport built (1989) and owned by Bangkok Airways. In 2012, theThai Government announced the possibility of a second airport due to complaints of high airport fees. Air Asia and Nok Air offer flights to Surat Thani airport, and connecting with several ferries, including two car/ passenger ferries to the northwest of the island. It has become Thailand’s second largest resort business behind Bangkok, surpassing Phuket.

The marvelous and salubrious, award-winning Silavadee Wellness Spa, with five private spa villas (and meticulously-trained therapists – all smiling) overlooking the sea, is both a visual and physical sensation. “We just completed Phase Two months ago and added 25 exquisite pool villas [they sure are…] and a breathtaking trio of new restaurants on the water,” she emphasized. She then invited me to dine with her at the Sun Deck with candlelight, moonlight and a dazzling assortment of stars (including the chef). “We have our own bakery [as I marveled at the fulsome bread basket], and we provide baked goods to other hotels on the island,” she proudly informed me.

Ahhh…did love ever feel this good? “Silavadee” is a portmanteau of “rocks” and “beauty”. Dramatic boulders adorn the two beaches and accent The Sun’s dining deck (which overlooks both the bay and the pool).

The fitness room towers over the bay in the Heights restaurant complex, where dinner-only is served and the main beach (below) is located. Nicknamed “secret beach” by the locals, it is a postcard snapshot. Get a kayak and explore. SILAVADEE DINING:

The Sun, The Moon and The Stars

by Frank E. Lihn The full moon glittered brightly in a cloudless sky. The table at The Sun was immaculately set on a deck constructed atop boulders strewn along the shoreline. The ocean, the flickering candles, an attentive and professional staff and a bottle of champagne bedizened the evening. Silavadee – a resort synonymous with romance. The evening was already perfect, and the chef did not disappoint. An array of freshly baked breads was served accompanied by a trio of delightfully different dips and spreads – thick, rich pesto, spicy dill yogurt and tropical fruit salsa. Seafood bisque: a rich, creamy soup laden with a mélange of fresh seafood – scallops, shrimp and crab meat – and a hint of cognac was superb. Roast duck with XO Sauce was a revelation. The fish-based sauce, a relatively recent invention of a Hong Kong chef, was a wonderfully spicy complement to the well-prepared fowl. Then a beautifully presented grilled salmon fillet

was enhanced by linguini in a creatively different lemon-caper sauce that first surprised, then puzzled, then delighted. As the moon gently rose above the boulder protruding through the deck, two desserts were delivered to our table, both featuring home-churned vanilla ice cream in a lace cookie cup. The first: a chocolate l o v e r ’s delight molten lava cake – rich, smooth and ohh, so chocolaty. The second: neatly folded Crepes Suzette topped with a velvet-smooth sauce studded with fresh fruit. It was a delightful ending to a wonderfully romantic evening.

PS. The Story of the Turtles Do check the Web site (www.silavadeeresort.com) for the fascinating tale of the Green Sea and the Hawksbill turtles (both endangered species) that have nested in fecund abundance on the Silavadee beach.

“The story began back in April 2012, when one of our beach staff discovered turtle tracks on our beach. Investigating, he discovered that a turtle had laid eggs.

Following these finds, the Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center (MCRRC) were able to approximate the next nesting.

We notified our GM, Conor O’Leary who coordinated with the Fisheries Department to visit and collect 87 eggs to incubate at Samui Aquarium. It was confirmed these eggs were from a Green Sea Turtle, which is currently on the endangered species list. One month later it happened again! This time, 133 eggs were found. These eggs were confirmed to be from a Hawksbill turtle, which was much more of a surprise as they are currently listed on the critically endangered species list, and no recorded Hawksbill Turtle nesting on Koh Samui Island had been recorded for over 21 years.

On the 26th May teams from Silavadee and MCRRC camped out on the beach and witnessed a mommy Hawksbill turtle slowly make her way up the beach, carefully dig a hole, and lay 147 golf-ball sized eggs. For many weeks and four more visits we were part of this natural miracle. We collected a total of 1,003 eggs. The eggs from the last five nestings were moved to MCRRC head office for incubation and are expected to keep for one year before release. With the successful hatching of over 760 eggs, the MCRRC were overwhelmed with baby turtles. We were lucky to release 108 of these beautiful creatures into the Gulf of Thailand from our beach, in the hope they will return back to us in four+ years when they are ready to give birth themselves. We are honored to be a part of preserving these critically endangered species and hope that this will be a reoccurring event for years to come as we maintain the natural environment on our secret beach. We are looking forward to our turtles coming back to nest this year.” +66 (0) 77 960 555 +66 (0) 77 960 055 Fax 208/66 Moo 4, Maret, Koh Samui, Suratthani 84310Thailand rsvn@silavadeeresort.com www.silavadeeresort.com

BEACHES Visiting a Thailand beach or island is the preferred holiday for hundreds of thousands of visitors to Thailand every year. Thailand is blessed with natural beauty and its islands are among the most scenic and beautiful in the world. Likewise, each Thai beach, such as Karon Beach in Phuket, Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui, or picturesque Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi, is simply stunning, and many feature powdery sand, crystal clear water, and postcard-perfect scenery. Each Thai beach and island has its own character and identity and therefore draws a specific type of visitor. Each coastal area contains a slice of heaven suitable for a different style of traveler: The west coast of Thailand, along the Andaman Sea, features beaches that appeal to every type of traveler, including the activity-filled resort island of Phuket; the popular backpacker beaches of Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Krabi; the family friendly, laid back, and pristine coast of Khao Lak (the launching point for trips to the spectacular Similan Islands); and the remote, undeveloped islands of the far south. Along the Gulf coast, the resort island of Koh Samui lies nearby the natural splendor of Koh Phangan and the scuba diving paradise of Koh Tao. Closer to Bangkok is the popular resort town of Hua Hin, a favorite among Thais, and its quieter neighbor Cha Am. Finally, to the east of Thailand, the northern Gulf features Bangkok weekend getaway Koh Samet, and the up-and-coming resort island of Koh Chang, which has both upscale resorts and budget beach bungalows. Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, is a perfect example of this contrast. Phuket is certainly the most developed Thai island, having been the first Thai beach resort destination. Koh Samui is the prime island attraction in the Gulf of Thailand. The most popular beach, Chaweng, features accommodation from five-star luxury resorts to affordable beach bungalows, and dining includes fine dining on international cuisine and casual beachside seafood barbeques. Krabi is a province on the mainland Andaman coast, near Phuket. In addition to popular beachside resort areas, such as Railey Beach, Krabi includes a number of spectacular islands, such as the Phi Phi Islands and Koh Lanta, off of which some of Thailand’s most popular scuba diving sites are found.

They are capacious, open, contemporary, sweeping, cinemascopic – and comfortable. You ascend the mountain for privacy, intimacy and soul-expanding solitude…and a touch of grandeur. Stephan Chaline, the GM, sharpened his knives and honed his operational skills in chateaus across his home in France and Europe for 12 years before arriving in Samui a year ago. “Our guests require pampering and luxury. The private pools, open-air restaurant and new Beach Club begin the experience,” he observes. “A Wellness Center and gym are under construction, as well as another superb dining experience in 2015.” The private beach club at Bang Po Beach (opening this August) is a twisting, four-minute, steeplechase ride down the mountain. Perhaps the best part of the beach experience is that you can see miles of it from your terrace(s).

I visited with Frank, my brother, a world-class chef, who spent his formative years in New York City, and Stephan decided to put him to work. He organized a sunset barbeque on the huge terrace and Frank and Chef Son went to work. “We provide experiences for our guests similar to this every week. Nearly 30 years ago, Khun Chananthip traveled with her sister to Koh Samui for a vacation on this quiet, undeveloped, tropical island. They stayed at a small resort managed by an eager young man, Khun Thitiphan. He diligently (and cleverly) took care of Khun Chananthip’s mother and sister, and quietly (“He was shy!” she laughed) began his courtship. He was obviously wise to the ditty: “Wenn die Tochter so gewinnen / Mit die Mutter so beginnen.” (If you want to win the daughter, begin with the mother) The strategy worked, and the resourceful suitor soon proposed to his elegant bride-to-be. Add my “Best of…” encomium to the long list: “Best Romantic Retreat”, “Sensuous Spa” (Boutique Hotel Awards); #1 in Asia “Sexy Skinny Dips” (CNN); “Best Luxury Honeymoon Hotel” (World Luxury Hotel); “’Hottest’ Resort in Phuket” (Conde Nast Traveler). Contemporary and stylistic, sleek yet cozy, bedizened in luxurious reds and black, the capacious rooms draw you in and tempt you to nestle and hug all weekend. The frisson of expectant passion crackles. Hey, fall in love! “We are geared for couples,” said Jean_Christophe (JC) Nager, the GM who has cosseted this property for five years. “Since opening in 2006, we have provided an intimate,

personalized and quiet retreat for our guests. Honeymooners, young couples and parents spending time alone. We call it a ‘sexy sanctuary’,” he smiled. “We sell space and privacy! Guests will dine in their villas or have a sunset cocktail at 360º Bar.” Luxuriate in one of five types of 49, sequestered, private pool villas (or one of four, duplex, three-BR pool villas) – all with vistas. “What is this thing, this love of which they speak?” pondered Euripides’ Phaedra. You are met at the arrivals and whisked through Immigration into a hotel van. Divine. Then a happy (almost giddy) staff fawns over you with smiles, and almost invites you home to eat. The design of this 58-room resort is sleek, contemporary, colorful (lots of coral blue) and stylish. The multi-hued views of the sunset are sublime. And it is quiet and peaceful.

This is the first hotel project for the owners, a productive couple who have eight businesses in the Phuket airport (executive lounge service, two souvenir shops, a pharmacy, and four restaurants) as well as two eateries on the island. Their savvy is evident. Their aide-de-camp for the past six years, Witsanu (Maew) Dokmaihom, is the energetic manager of the airport action and – now – the de facto leader of the hotel project. “Do you sleep?” I asked him. Danish entrepreneur, Flemming Bo Sorensen, and his elegant Thai wife, Nikki, rode into town several years ago and decided to channel their collective, creative ambitions into a luxurious, but affordable, villa-resort 30 minutes south of Hua Hin. The recently-opened European-styled resort now features 40 spacious one to three-bedroom villas (ranging from 170 to 264 sqm) – and Thailand’s largest saltwater pool (2,800 sqm) stretching its narrow, rectangular tributaries around the expanding property. restaurant, wine cellar, pool bar, and mini-market provide ample recreation and comfortable self-containment. Rooftop salas allow outdoor massages and barbeques. The energetic, innovative and visionary owners began construction in 2010 and continue to grow the resort. “We have 16 more villas under construction. All units offer ample space to relax or party or dine,” Flemming says as we walk the property. “It provides a memorable vacation and a solid investment opportunity.” Once the resort is complete it will feature 81 villas and 38 bungalows. The saltwater pool will then be a gargantuan 7,000 sqm.

Two shuttle buses whisk vacationers to the beach (only 700 meters away), into town or on sightseeing tours. “Our aim is to provide luxury and space without some of the ridiculous costs associated with a five-star vacation. Our Spa is affordable. Families come and dine-in or out. Swim, tennis, golf nearby – lots of activities. Or simply hang out and float!” He continues to improve the dining, inviting guest chefs to enhance the options. A wonderful spot for families and toddlers, and couples seeking solace.

(Article by : X2 ) The idea for the use of stones comes from the seasonal appearance of sea pebbles found scattered along the beach during winter months. The “Mountain Rock” used throughout the resort are all from local quarries. The external stone of the villas appear as walls – not as a building – creating an invisibility of design. A structural wall for one villa may appear as a fence wall to another villa. By using this invisible wall design and clever landscaping, you have the feeling of solitude without being encased in four high fences – privacy without isolation.

CITY (BANGKOK) As the political, economic, cultural, culinary, and spiritual capital of Thailand, Bangkok features both old-world charm and modern convenience, at times served up in an apparently chaotic manner, but always with a gracious smile. Invariably, every Thailand holiday includes a visit to the kingdom’s capital city, Bangkok, or Krung Thep, “the city of angels” as it is known to its inhabitants. Many tourists who travel to Bangkok are immediately overwhelmed by the sheer size of the city and the vast number of attractions Bangkok has to offer. Indeed there is a wide variety of Bangkok sightseeing opportunities spanning more than two centuries of rapid development following the city’s founding in 1782 by King Rama I, the first king of the present Chakri dynasty. Since that auspicious date, Bangkok has swelled to a cosmopolitan, 21st century city of more than 10 million inhabitants. While the immensity of the city and its bustling streets can be intimidating at first, those who spend some time in Bangkok are quickly enamored by the myriad of attractions Bangkok contains, from exotic temples, which underscore Thailand’s strong Buddhist history, to modern shopping malls, which make shopping an integral part of any Bangkok holiday. Bangkok features attractions guaranteed to please visitors either simply passing through the city or spending their entire Thailand holiday in Bangkok. Beyond Bangkok’s historical district, there are plenty of other attractions that make a Bangkok holiday both enjoyable and memorable. The downtown districts along Silom and Sukhumvit Roads have a convenient electric rail system, including an elevated sky-train and underground subway, that have made travel in Bangkok both easy and enjoyable. Connecting hotels directly to shopping malls and traditional markets, the MRT and BTS systems have literally elevated Bangkok shopping to world-class status. Of course, no Thailand holiday is complete without experiencing Thailand’s vibrant nightlife. Whether, the purpose of your Thailand holiday is to immerse yourself in Thailand’s unique culture or simply to splurge in Bangkok shopping malls, when you travel to Bangkok you are guaranteed a fascinating experience of both oldworld charm and modern convenience and luxury.

Elegant, sleek, worldly, sophisticated and suffused with Old-World charm, the Peninsula is one of the best in Bangkok. It holds your hand, caresses you and whispers in your ear. It’s love at first visit. Towering over the frenetic Chao Phraya River – and a rapid ferry ride to the shopping and business enclaves (and the BTS) – this gracious hotel personifies class and luxury. As does its GM. It turns out that the cosmopolitan Katja Henke worked with a friend in the exquisite Berkshire mountains in western Massachusetts many years ago, so we sat and traded stories. “This is such a special institution,” she said as a broad smile bathed her happy face. “Such affordable elegance and luxury! t is always a pleasure to find your overloaded luggage and your sagging, jet-lagged body falling into the arms of a courteous, supportive, cheerful and welcoming hotel staff. Something very reassuring about hospitality at the end of a long flight. Comfort. Smiles and cheer seem to be the hallmark of this buoyant and impressive hotel. This four-year old luxury property is in the heart of the bustling Sukhumvit sector of Bangkok, and a short walk from the Nana BTS. A plethora of restaurants, nightclubs, entertainment, shopping, spas, a park and lake all orbit this quiet Sukhumvit Soi 13 hotel. A complimentary tuk-tuk service shuttles you around to Terminal 21, the Skytrain and local restaurants. Or take a walk and enjoy the late-evening buzz on frantic Soi 11. Eight stories house 96 contemporary rooms and suites (do check out the 85-sqm Premier onebedroom suite – this is comfortable). Additionally, a second building offers 54 long-term options for the more committed travelers. I shared a few Aussie jokes with the hands-on GM, Benjamin Krieg, and then enjoyed a convivial twoperson tour lead by Patitta Chinin Adinolfi, the director of sales and marketing. “Our rooms are spacious and comfortable,” asserted Patitta, as we wandered through one of the 30 suites (55-85 sqm). “Our rooftop, outdoor pool and fitness center also provide lots of space.” It’s a gracious, affordable option in the midst of central Bangkok.

his polished, stylish and sophisticated hotel has a lot going for it. Location and convenience for sure.

But attentive, heartfelt service distinguishes this preeminent, five-star, Luxury Collection hotel. Let me elaborate: I arranged for a honeymooning couple from Hawaii to spend a night during their Thailand trip and met them for dinner. We bumped into the ubiquitous GM, Richard Chapman, who has been presiding and pampering guests here for nearly 15 years. He is a fixture around the property, ensuring impeccable hospitality. Well, he did it again. He enthusiastically greeted my young friends and we departed. That night in their room was a honeymoon cake with a special greeting! Class. Soigné. The 33-story Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is located at the prestigious Sukhumvit/Asok junction (where the efficient BTS and MRT converge at Terminal 21, a shopping mall with

restaurants and cinema). Take an easy BTS ride to glorious shopping: Central World, Siam Paragon, Emporium, Fortune, MBK and Central Rama IX. This 420-room hotel is a perpetual “Best Of” on countless lists. Six restaurants offer delicious options; and the tranquil Library Lounge is an excellent spot for a meeting, relaxing or simply reading a book. Most evenings, soft jazz (live) resonates in the background. A poolside bar, sauna, fitness facility and an elegant spa – as well as a business center – offer splendid services. The event space and ballroom are handsome. I have happily used them on many occasions (a press conference and several catered parties). The experience was both impressive and first-class with exemplary service. This is one of my clear favorites – and one of the best business hotels in the city. Outstanding. Tucked away in busy Ratchadapisek Road, 15-minutes north of the Asok/Sukhumvit hubbub, this is the only hotel of dignified significance in the burgeoning area. It is taking full advantage of its neighborhood star-turn. Four Executive Club floors, with a capacious and comfortable Lounge (and private gym), crown this 22-story building, which currently is home to “407 well-appointed” rooms; as well as a massive Grand Ballroom and 21 conference rooms.

Marcel Sawyere, the buoyant GM, happily points out a host of features: “We have four restaurants [the Chinese and Japanese are outstanding] which draw 90% of its business from outside the hotel,” he nods. Impressive. “Our Spa and expansive fitness complex [with a sprawling fifth-floor pool], also, attract many of our neighborhood friends.” But that’s not all of the good news. “We have just unveiled our intention to embark upon an ambitious campaign to renovate and upgrade the hotel,” Marcel added. Well, what about the “407 well-appointed rooms” (and they are – or were)? “They are to be modernized and – simply – made more elegant.”

MOUNTAINS For any traveler wishing to explore the wonders of nature, a Thailand National Park is an outstanding destination. There are many forest parks if you long to explore the tropical rainforest or travel deep into the wild jungle to see some of the exotic animals in Thailand. If you prefer scuba diving, snorkeling, or sea kayaking there are a number of national marine parks in the south and east of Thailand that are simply stunning. In fact, Thailand has over 100 national parks, including more than 20 marine parks; each park in Thailand contains unique flora and fauna as well as basic amenities, including some bungalows with electricity and grounds for camping (even if you don’t bring your own tent). Most of these parks are easily accessible and admission fees are relatively modest, though booking ahead is often recommended as some parks are very popular with Thai visitors, particular over long holiday weekends. Eco-oriented activities at a national park in Thailand range from trekking, kayaking, nature photography, camping and snorkeling to spotting exotic birds and other animals in Thailand unlike those found elsewhere in the world. However, simply relaxing and enjoying the pristine beauty of unspoiled Thai nature may be the most rewarding experience of all. A few of Thailand’s more popular national parks are: Doi Inthanon National Park in Northern Thailand features Thailand’s highest peak and contains waterfalls and forests containing numerous species of orchid. The area is also inhabited by indigenous hill tribe villagers. Pha Hom Pok National Park, the highest hill in the park is about 2285 meters above sea level. On the top of the hill, there is granite and a shallow layer of soil. It is quite windy all the year. and the ridge road being parallel with the border of Thailand-Myanmar. It is interesting to visit the national park in winter because of the cooler weather, mountain mists and migratory birds such as purple cochoa, brown-breasted bulbul. Sam Roi Yot National Park is a favorite for bird watchers as the coastal region of the park features marshes that are home to a variety of waterfowl and other marine life. Erawan National Park, located in Kanchanaburi Province in western Thailand, features a renowned seven-tiered waterfall and a tropical forest that contains numerous wildlife species. I have spent many weekends visiting him and his darling wife, Jerri, on this five-acre estate and have thrived in the hospitality. This guy can cook, entertain, fix your luggage, build you a bookcase and arrange your next flight to Bhutan. He may be Chiang Mai’s only Renaissance Man! he antiquities of Chiang Mai can be discovered in a visit to this gracious resort in Chiang Mai (historically known as the Kingdom of Lanna, which played a significant historical, cultural and commercial role during the 13th to 18th centuries).
