THE PORTAL

Haworth Sponsored Coworking Office Chinatown, Washington, D.C. Fall 2019

The Portal is a co-working space located in Chinatown, Washington D.C., intended to serve the needs of all types of workers, whether selfemployed or work for different employers. As Chinatown constantly evolves and changes, one thing is constant, the Friendship Arch. It symbolizes friendship among nations, and highlights the neighborhood’s Chinese culture. The archway acts as a threshold for those traveling through it- they are reminded of the bold heritage that stands tall in the rich multicultural city through movement, passage, and transition. By giving the office a sense of place and connecting those who use it together through the site, the center benching space mimics the quality of the arch and acts as a portal to connect people from all different backgrounds towards building a more collaborative and inclusive workplace.

ASCEND

Homeless Basic Needs Center Asheville, NC In Collaboration with Julia Sorenson + Angelica Hoelzli Fall 2019 This homeless basic needs shelter is placed in Downtown Asheville, NC, aiming to be a center of resources and reflection. Asheville, being a relatively progressive area in the conservative western region of North Carolina, is a hotspot for art, food, and most significantly the Blue Ridge Mountains. The shelters goal is to reflect the emotions of a hike to assist their guests in reaching that “eye opening moment at the top. Experientially, the shelter works to ascend the mind for a sense of self achievement, giving them hope for a more comfortable life. The space prompts reflection that accompanies the journey without imposing that this is the final step or destination, it is only the transitional phase.

PARTI DIAGRAM Redirect moves users through the space as a trail would. The skylight lets in light as the clearing of trees would in nature. Refuel represents the intervals taken along a hike to rest. This includes self care, laundry and lounge spaces. Reflect emulates the peak of the hike, to an open area offering a sense of clarity and reflection. This space brings the users back to the outdoors in a comfortable setting to give relief from the unsheltered environment of the streets.

INTERTWINING PATHS Bishop Favaro Real Estate Program Blacksburg, VA Spring 2019

Reconfiguring the space of the Real Estate Program at Virginia Tech. Asked to design the floor to represent the identity and future direction of the program and serve the needs of its users. Focusing on the different educational backgrounds students came into the program with, this new real estate space supports interdisciplinary connections between students and spaces that support collaboration with faculty. Reflecting a maze, this floor mimics how unique paths can intertwine and promote growth through interaction.
