Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

Non-Figurative Sculpture in Clay

10 Weeks

Imagination flows as you create abstract, realistic and anthropomorphic sculptures. You may choose to articulate your figures through the application of kinetic elements to create a doll.

Learn handbuilding techniques to develop your ideas into clay sculpture while engaging your creative thinking process. Classes will present a broader discussion of sculptural forms beyond the figure and how best to incorporate narrative elements.

Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. We’ll teach you how to build up and carve into clay then make a plaster mold from your tile to make multiples. Firing and glazing will be discussed.

The Art of the Box 10 Weeks Examine various hand-building processes for constructing boxes. You will start by learning simple slab building techniques and progress to alternative methods, themes and traditional and alternative surface treatments. All levels welcome

5 Weeks Print repeatable images on green or leather-hard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Use paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly to clay at many stages using special oil-based inks. Explore works from abstract artists and create your own abstract paintings through various assignments. Whether you prefer abstraction or lean towards realism, the information shared will help you grow as an artist. Mark making, composition and value will be emphasized.

Experience the meditative practice of traditional Japanese ink painting, sumi-e, the art of painting using a brush (fude), ink (sumi) and thin, absorbent “rice-paper” (washi). Fundamental brushstrokes will be reviewed and insights into the “way of the brush” will be discussed, while you experiment with your original work.

Coloring books aren’t just for kids anymore. Let us teach you how to create your very own for fun and stress-relief. Use shapes and repeat patterns of various subjects such as floral, geometric, psychedelic and other detailed ink illustrations by hand to create your one-of-a-kind coloring book.

Working from photographs, learn to create dynamic and striking landscape paintings. Together we will explore foundations such as perspective, composition, light source and color. Any combination of media is acceptable for more advanced artists, but all levels of painters are welcome. Please bring a landscape photo that includes trees, painting supplies and at least one painting surface to the first class.

Practical Anatomy 5 Weeks

Learn to create your own comic books beginning with a simple strip and ending with a full-fledged short story. Inspiration can come from real life experiences, dreams or story ideas you’ve always wanted to create. All levels with an interest in sequential art are welcome.

Delve deeper into rendering human anatomy. Each week the class will begin with drawing from a live model, focusing on different parts of the body. This class is designed for the illustrator or cartoonist interested in building skills and learning how to simplify the human form.

Your ideas become the subject of individualized instruction as you expand your skills as a painter. If you choose, a still life setup will be available each week to further develop your skills in representational painting. This is a class for students with previous painting experience.

Learn creative ways to join metal and set stones through cold connections. No torch required! We’ll start with basic metalworking and how to incorporate rivets to hold pieces together securely or allow pieces to move. A variety of techniques of connecting metal and setting cabochon stones and found objects without heat will be discussed.

5 Weeks Develop familiarity with the tools, materials and basic techniques for fusing glass. Learn to properly cut, design and lay out glass to create jewelry, accessories or small trays. Practice a wide range of natural dye techniques, exploring various colors, tannins and mordants on a variety of fabrics. You’ll obtain a strong understanding of how mordant is used and the strength of color from dyes such as indigo, cochineal, logwood and madder. In addition, you’ll also practice various shibori methods and techniques.

Whether you’ve run out of clean laundry or you just can’t find anything that fits right, join us and learn how to make your own underwear. It’s easier than you think! You’ll use both the sergers and the home-sewing machines to create custom underwear in a variety of styles. Materials provided on the first day.

The jumpsuit is back and better than ever! They’re comfortable, utilitarian and super stylish. A creative community for our youngest members: 6 months-4 years old

Ages 6–12 months

A creative community for our youngest members: 0-4 years old. Lil’ Kidstreet inspires your child’s natural delight for song, rhythm, color and texture. We combine visual art and music to encourage developmentally appropriate learning through original songs, musical instruments, rhythm-based activities, paint, clay and collage. These classes are the first steps in the foundation of exploration, creativity and enthusiasm for art and music. Each class is 45 minutes and includes both music and art. A caregiver participates with the child in these classes. In order to provide the best quality time with your toddler, we ask that you refrain from bringing other children to class.

Music and art collide in this fun and creative combination class. We’ll begin with songs, instruments and dance before moving to the art table to explore paint, collage and clay. Encourage motor development, social skills and visual thinking through an inspiring and art-filled time.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds

Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
