Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

Multilevel Dreams, Myths & Stories in Clay 10 Weeks Explore personal stories, dreams and myths in hand-built clay forms. You will learn to form, texture and finish work bringing your ideas to life. Explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. There will be class discussions on surface treatment for sculpture. A model will be used as needed and fee collected in class.

Build unique plates that can look great either on a wall or at the table. Develop forms on both the front and back of your plate with elegant, decorative elements and illustrated surfaces with a narrative element.

10 Weeks What story do you have to tell? Learn handbuilding techniques to develop your ideas into clay sculpture while maturing your creative thinking process. Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. We’ll teach you how to build up and carve into the clay then make a plaster mold from your tile to make multiples. Firing and glazing will be discussed. All levels welcome.

Livin’ La Vida Low Fire 10 Weeks

Traditional Figure Sculpture 10 Weeks Working weekly from a nude model, you will take a methodical approach to sculpting the figure. You may choose to sculpt a head, torso or full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, body proportions, poses and gesture. Building techniques and observational skills will be emphasized. Special attention will be given to traditional and nontraditional finishing techniques for sculpture. Prerequisite: One Beginning/ Advanced Beginning Handbuilding.

Explore the rich history and bright color palette of low-fired ceramic surface decorations. Demonstrations and discussions will involve the use of terra sigilata, underglazes, slips and glazes on terra cotta.

10 Weeks Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. Using slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and understandable. You will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Prerequisite: One year of experience working with clay or instructor approval.

Advanced Wheelthrowing

10 Weeks

Increase your clay skills while building functional and sculptural objects. Weekly demonstrations will teach more complex techniques to manipulate clay and allow further development of your handbuilt work.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

Prerequisite: One year of Handbuilding.

Winter Mugs 1 Day Whether it’s for coffee, tea, soup or hot cocoa, create your own clay mug to warm those chilly days. Working with stoneware slabs, we will construct, texture, decorate and carve into the clay to make it your own functional piece of art. Choose a glaze that will be applied to the mug after its final firing.

Are you interested in surface treatments for your forms that don’t involve an additional trip to the kiln? Try a variety of post-firing surface treatments ranging from paints to dips and epoxies. Bring some already fired pieces to experiment on with different finishes.

Explore the fundamentals of  drawing portraits and figures while working from a nude model. Weekly demonstrations and structured exercises will emphasize observation, proportion, measuring, anatomy  and seeing the figure and face as a combination of integrated shapes. Expand your knowledge of watercolor techniques by introducing ink pen and brush into your work. Learn how these two mediums can work together to create more complex and thoughtful compositions. A great continuation to Introduction to Watercolor.

Gouache is a terrific medium for all levels of painters. Think of it as opaque, matte watercolor. Easily painted over, gouache lends itself well to small-scale still life and abstraction. This multi-level class will emphasis on experimenting with brush shapes, sizes and textures, color theory, the picture plane, composition and critique.

Learn to maximize your use of color to add vibrancy and depth to your work. Focus will be on working with complementary colors, warm versus cool, color mixing and blending. Demonstrations will involve various media, using both still-life and the human form. Come prepared to the first class with a large sketch-pad (18x24) and set of prismacolor nupastels.

Delve deeper into rendering human anatomy. Each week the class will begin with drawing from a live model, focusing on different parts of the body. This class is designed for the illustrator or cartoonist interested in building skills and learning how to simplify the human form. For the first class bring an 18”x24” pad of paper and 4B-6B drawing pencils.

This class will explain, teach and demystify mechanical techniques that add movement to sculpture and jewelry. You will learn proper hinge construction and a variety of hinge samples will be available for inspiration. This course offers students a guided workshop designed to explore and understand the unique attributes and techniques involved in working with gold. Creating a pair of small gold hoop earrings, this project covers techniques involved in goldsmithing, weight estimation, reclaiming and re-smelting gold, metal rolling and drawing. You will need to bring gold with you to the first class.

Draw on an enameled surface as if you were drawing on paper. Learn how to apply graphite on enamel and experiment with its different visual effects through firing multiple layers. Drawing with pen and underglaze ink will be introduced to create unique graphic designs.

Tool Making 1 Day Learn how to create, temper, harden and polish your very own custom chasing tools. Techniques will include filing, refining, heating and quenching that will make the steel strong for long-term use. Each student will receive five A-1 tool steel blanks. All materials included.

Houses & Dens 5 Weeks Explore domestic architecture of humans, animals and fictional creatures. Create and design your own special places in this multi-media class through clay, recycled materials, textiles, painting and printing.

Young artists become explorers as they investigate a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by talented teaching artists.

Clay Time 5 Weeks Clay Time is a chance for little ones to get to know ceramics in its many forms. They will have the opportunity to work with press molds, coil building and slab-built structures to create playful sculpture and functional wares. This will help sharpen their motor skills as they use their hands as a primary tool.

Lil’Kidstreet A creative community for our youngest members: 0-4 years old

Lil’ Kidstreet inspires your child’s natural delight for song, rhythm, color and texture. Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary.

Holidays And Missed Classes: For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

Tools And Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative retreats, visiting artist workshops, and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
