Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. Examining the performative nature of clay and its relationship with the body, expand the gestures with which you interact with ceramics. Learn to experiment and develop new ideas that consider the archival possibilities of material. We will look to examples of artists using the conceptual framework of the body as a perforative entity in art today.

We all know glazing your work can be the easiest and fastest way to destroy it. Explore a variety of cold-surfacing techniques including tool dips, paints, epoxies, washes, waxes and polishes. You are encouraged to come to the class with some finished bisqueware sculptures and to make test tiles and other sculptures. Purchase of additional materials will be necessary. All levels welcome

Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. Using slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and understandable. Experience the meditative practice of traditional Japanese ink painting, sumi-e, the art of painting using a brush (fude), ink (sumi) and thin, absorbent “rice-paper” (washi). Fundamental brushstrokes will be reviewed and insights into the “way of the brush” will be discussed, while you experiment with your original work.

Learn to capture birds and plants in your drawings and paintings. You will study the anatomy of birds and draw from plant specimens. If weather permits, we will take field trips to local museums, gardens and parks to sketch en plein aire. You will begin by working with graphite and charcoal, and will then be introduced to various ink, watercolor, and acrylic painting techniques.

Learn to maximize your use of color to add vibrancy and depth to your work. Focus will be on working with complementary colors, warm versus cool, color mixing and blending. Demonstrations will involve various media, using both still-life and the human form. Come prepared to the first class with a large sketch-pad (18x24) and set of prismacolor nupastels.

Designed to help you take your comic book to the next level. This class is perfect for those who already have a small body of work and would like to continue to develop their own body of work and create longer,  more elaborate stories.

Learn to create dynamic and striking landscape paintings from photographs. Together we will explore the foundations of landscape painting including perspective, composition, light source and color. Creativity is especially welcome in this class so any combination of media is acceptable. All levels of painters are welcome. Explore the beauty of symmetry through paper-cutting. A variety of traditional and modern paper cutting techniques will be discussed. Make it Move: Hinge Construction 10 Weeks This class will explain, teach and demystify mechanical techniques that add movement to sculpture and jewelry. Developing a Journal & Sketchbook

5 Weeks

Combine various contemporary painting and printmaking processes with monotype and collage to create unique, mixed media prints. The notion of the “artist as the inventor” will be stressed as you experiment with collage, stamping and stenciling in their work. Plates, all inks and some paper will be supplied, additional paper may be purchased in class.

The journals and sketchbooks of Kafka, Goya, Faulkner and others have been inspired by the intersection of word and image. Open to those interested in writing and/or visual art, the class uses an interdisciplinary approach to help you better “see” your narrative work, considering your written and visual work fully through personal observation, imagination and memory.

Toner Litho Transfer on Clay 5 Weeks Print repeatable images on green or leather-hard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Meet new friends while learning embroidery with a contemporary spin. Each week practice stitches such as the chain stitch, bullion knot and turkey work onto a custom sampler designed and printed by the teaching artist. Build layers of thread onto your cloth, leaving with a finished sampler to show off your skills. Material fee includes all supplies.

Block printing is a centuries-old method of creating beautiful fabric. In this class you’ll learn how to carve into linoleum blocks and print your image onto fabric. Explore color and pattern and leave with beautiful t-shirts, scarves, tea-towels or yardage to use in sewing projects.

Save a few dollars by making your own clothing alterations. Learn to take shirts in, jeans up, mend holes, fix hems and sew on buttons. Come to class the first day with your uncompleted mending and alterations projects. We’ll complete them together with necessary demonstrations.

Learn the essential skills of sewing garments for children including fabric selection, pattern reading, basic sewing skills and finishing techniques. Screen Printing Concepts: Multi-colors & Resists 5 Week Expand your screen printing skills and learn to quickly create multi-color, multi-layer designs. Add bold color with dye through immersion baths and direct application (printing). Mask off areas using resists and stenciling to create rich and challenging fabric projects such as scarves, tea towels and clothing. All levels welcome.

Use a simple Japanese straight stitch to create narratives with needles and thread on cloth. Explore BORO: rags, scraps or remnants of cloth which represents an essential principal of rural ethics and esthetics, as reference. Then patch, stitch, shred and assemble fabrics into a new form of their visual expression. Your pieces can become precious gift wrapping cloth, wall coverings or art pieces. All levels. Whether you’ve run out of clean laundry or you just can’t find anything that fits right, join us and learn how to make your own underwear. It’s easier than you think! You’ll use both the sergers and the home-sewing machines to create custom underwear in a variety of styles. Materials provided on the first day.

Learn to use natural, vegetable-based dyes to create vibrant, colorful easter eggs. We’ll then print a tea towel with a spring design using our images or your own designs. One tea towel will be provided. You’re welcome to bring additional items on which to print. Dress for mess.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary.

Holidays & Missed Classes: For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.
