Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 4 or 5 Weeks

Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay. 4 Weeks

Multilevel

What story do you have to tell? Learn handbuilding techniques to develop your ideas into clay sculpture while maturing your creative thinking process. By using research materials and asking appropriate questions, you will bring clarity to your story. This group shares ideas and process development with each other.

Explore hand built, functional vessels and sculptural objects used and inspired by chocolate. We will center on rituals of everyday eating as they relate to this fine elixir. In addition, we will share perspectives and engage in discussion around chocolate while we create. One field trip. One guest speaker. The last class we feast on our theme, chocolate!

Imagination flows as you create abstract, realistic and anthropomorphic or animal sculptures. You may choose to articulate your figures through the application of kinetic elements to create a doll. All levels welcome

Simply Soda: Beginning Soda 10 Weeks

Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. Using slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and understandable. You will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Print repeatable images on leatherhard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Gain relief, screen printing and paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly and indirectly to greenware. Transfer images, textures and patterns to your clay pieces using slips, stains and special inks. Most techniques can be adapted for earthenware. All inks and one 25 lb bag of clay included in material fee. Prerequisite: One year of ceramics classes or instructor approval.

Intermediate Wheelthrowing

Become a better handbuilder while developing skills needed to create functional and sculptural objects. Through demonstrations and conversations, learn more involved techniques to manipulate clay and further develop your handbuilt work.

You have mastered the basics, now challenge yourself to throw a better pot. Design pottery and develop a personal aesthetic while learning techniques to make complex forms. Weekly demonstrations and experimentation with new glaze combinations will help develop your signature look.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

Take your knowledge and experience to the next level in this advanced mold making and casting class. Through hands-on demonstrations, you will be able to make plaster models and multiple piece molds. Learn techniques for more precise execution of modeling and molding cast objects.

Advanced Topics

If you have basic throwing skills and want to learn about handbuilding, this is the class for you. Throw pots and embellish with handbuilt elements, throw forms and use sections of them in your handbuilt vessels. Coils, slabs and pinch pots can add another dimension to your thrown work.

This class is designed primarily to help you to develop specific ideas, refine techniques and pursue independent projects.

Lightroom is powerful and affordable software for enhancing photographs, cataloging, printing and more. This overview will teach you to organize, develop and print your images. Composition can make an interesting subject uninteresting or make an ordinary subject extraordinary. Drawing inspiration from comics, movies, animation and video games, you will learn about visual composition and storytelling through character design. Focus will be on creating diverse characters, basic anatomy and drawing figures from all angles, dynamic poses, facial expressions and beginner digital coloring. If you have a digital drawing tablet, bring it to class.

Create your own resist tools for Itagime Shibori using open source modeling software and our 3D printers. Your custom made tool will clamp pleats and folds in place while you dye your fabric to create a repeat pattern.

Take one fast-paced week to learn letterpress. Explore both classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices on multiple types of presses. This technique uses movable type to create an impression on the paper when printed. Projects are designed to showcase type, color and the printed form. Drawing & Painting Drop-In Figure Drawing Drop-in figure drawing sessions offer an excellent opportunity for beginning to advanced students to practice their perception and drawing skills. We supply drawing benches, easels, tables, clips and backup support boards for pads. Please bring your own drawing materials. Instruction and critique are not included. Pastels, being both a painting and drawing medium, helps the you to begin working in color. Layering and blending techniques will help you understand how to mix colors directly on the paper. Understanding Color

Your Life in comics

Learn to maximize your use of color to add vibrancy and depth to your work. Focus will be on working with complementary colors, warm versus cool, color mixing and blending. Demonstrations will involve various media, using both still-life and the human form. Come prepared to the first class with a large sketch-pad (18x24) and set of prismacolor nupastels.

Inside everyone there is a personal story informed by unique life experiences, that is itching to get out. We will look at autobiographical comics and graphic novels as inspiration to cartoon our own personal narratives. Personalized stories become the focus of individualized instruction, in which you will build your unique outlooks, aesthetic and storytelling approaches.

Wire Wrapped Pendant

Make your own copper garden stake to decorate your garden or flower pot. Students will design, saw and stamp metal, which will be soldered to a copper post, ready to put into the dirt. Metal to make one garden stake supplied. Additional metal may be purchased from the instructor.

Learn to make a sterling silver wire wrapped pendant with a stone in one day, and the skills to make more at home. We will use only wire and a few hand tools, no power tools or heat are necessary. Introduction to Cyanotype

Explore classic letterpress techniques and contemporary practices including setting type on angle, curves and circles. Projects will showcase handset type, color and the printed form, including monotype and pressure printing of color fields. Explore more in-depth, complex and larger-scale works. Learn the historical process of printing photographs with the sun! You will make both photograms and contact prints rendered in cyanotype’s iconic Prussian blue. Application of chemistry, proper exposure times and toned prints will be covered.

Lil’Kidstreet A creative community for our youngest members: 0-4 years old

Lil’ Kidstreet inspires your child’s natural delight for song, rhythm, color and texture. We combine visual art and music to encourage developmentally appropriate learning through original songs, musical instruments, rhythm-based activities, paint, clay and collage. These classes are the first steps in the foundation of exploration, creativity and enthusiasm for art and music. Each class is 45 minutes. A caregiver participates with the child in these classes.

Kidstreet Young artists become explorers as they investigate a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by talented teaching artists.

Family Workshops These workshops are a wonderful opportunity to work together on theme projects and bring laughter, smiles and art into your life. All workshops are 2 hours long and meant for children ages 5+, accompanied by a paying adult. At least one child and one adult must register. Children under the age of 1 year are free with a paying adult.

Treat the birds to a nice summer bath. Create a bird bath made out of clay and glazed with a variety of bright colors. You will learn the basics of coil building and pinch pots. By the end of summer the birds will look fresh and clean.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Registration is accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. Workshops must be paid in full at time of registration. Balance is due on the first day of class. Lillstreet accepts payments by Visa, Master Card, American Express or Discover. Checks should be made payable to lillstreet art center.

Holidays & Missed Classes: For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session. Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative retreats, visiting artist workshops, and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
