Welcome to Lillstreet Art Center! Artists from all backgrounds, from novice to master, can find a place to learn within our community. We began as an alternative arts space in a converted horse barn on Lill Street in 1975 and gradually evolved into Chicago’s largest art center with 40,000 square feet in which to find inspiration, create, and explore. We encourage you to spend time, interact, and learn more about our 8 departments, 50 plus studios, gallery, and artisan gift shop.

Our classes, workshops, and camps provide hands-on experiences for individuals of all ages to discover and develop their creative potential. In addition to 5 and 10-week class sessions every year, we bring visiting artists from all over the world every month to conduct workshops in an effort to augment the artistic education at Lillstreet. Looking to become more involved in cultural events with us? We regularly host gallery openings, First Fridays, parties, and many other community events throughout the year to help Lillstreet stay connected to the neighborhood and the wider Chicago population.

Inside our departments, meet the instructors, department heads, and artists-in-residence who mentor our students. Our Artist-in-Residence program offers working artists an opportunity to grow in their own medium, while offering our students inspiration, assistance, and new perspectives.

Not sure where to start? Explore a new medium in a nopressure environment. Each of our adult departments offers five-week introductory classes for beginning students with no previous experience. Get comfortable with the basics before you decide on a full-length class! Some materials are included, and you’ll have access to open studio during your class.

Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding, and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing.

Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firing, and state-of-the-art equipment in our generous open studio hours. 10-week classes include 25 pounds of clay.

Beginner / Advanced Beginner FIRST-TIME POTTER (5 weeks) Not ready for a 10-week commitment? Try your hand at a variety of clay techniques, and learn the basics of handbuilding and wheelthrowing. This class is not a prerequisite for the 10-week Beginning Wheelthrowing or Handbuilding classes. Beginning students should plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet ($20). DREAMS, MYTHS, PILLARS, AND TOTEMS (10 weeks) Use clay to explore and express narratives important to your life.

Learn to construct such forms as pillars and totems, both large and small, and how to achieve ancientlooking textured surfaces. Dialogue among class members at each stage of the process will enrich the overall experience.

100 BOTTLES (Or Close To IT!) (10 weeks) The bottle form has always fascinated potters because of its beauty, versatility, surface potential and the fact that it can be one of the more challenging forms to execute on the wheel. This class is designed for the student interested in developing their throwing skills, from technical to aesthetic, using the bottle form as an object of study. Through repetition and frequent critiques we’ll explore the infinite possibilities the bottle form can take, with an eye on details that will elevate the form’s nuance.

Five weeks will be devoted to throwing and five weeks to surfaces with critiques for each segment.

ADVANCED WHEELTHROWING (10 weeks) Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence to throw taller and bigger, and to create pieces with nuance.

UNDERSTANDING GLAZES (10 weeks) This class is an introduction to the “how and why” of glazes, starting with material fusion testing, including color development. “Hyperglaze” calculation software will be used to compare and modify glazes. John Britt’s Hire Fire Glazes is the recommended text.

ART DOLLS AND SMALL SCULPTURES (10 weeks) This class is all about using the figure creatively and sculpting “outside the box”. Applying a basic knowledge of the figure, students may choose to create a static fantasy sculpture or add kinetic elements to their work through figure articulation. It’s all about playing. All levels welcome.

INTERMEDIATE WHEELTHROWING (10 weeks) Design your own pots and develop a personal aesthetic, while learning techniques to make complex forms.

Weekly demos and trying new glaze combinations will help you to develop a signature look.

MULTILEVEL PRINT ON CLAY (10 weeks) Print images on clay using a range of techniques from screenprinting to lithography. Investigate a variety of transfer techniques to allow for the creation of tiles, vessels and sculpture. Use different clay slips, stains, and glazes, and expect a wide range of images, texture, pattern, and color. A materials list will be provided the first day of class.

CERAMICS FROM ISLAMIC LANDS (10 weeks) This class will focus on the diversity of form and decoration and myriad styles of Islamic pottery c.1000-1800 ad. We will explore slip, carving, molds, and stamps on such forms as bowls, plates, and teapots. Open to intermediate through advanced students and those interested in the history of pottery.

Ceramics in Spring

EXPLORING HIGH FIRE GLAZES (10 weeks) Ever wanted to make your own high fire glaze? Now you can. By making and testing glazes, we will explore some of the chemistry and history of different glazes and glaze materials.

We will learn how to test and modify an existing glaze recipe. We will also find out which glazes work best with the work you create.

SIMPLY SODA: BEGINNING SODA (10 weeks) Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results. You’ll make pots for the soda kiln, and weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will increase your knowledge of more complex forms.

You’ll also learn the uses of soda slips and glazes, and the class will make the soda firing process accessible and understandable.

Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, introduction to firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required.

Prerequisite: at least one year of experience working with clay or instructor’s permission.

CERAMICS AND MIXED MEDIA (10 weeks) In this class we will explore the endless possibilities of ceramic art and the incorporation of different media. Visiting Artist Workshops ANDREW MARTIN MOLD MAKING AND SLIP CASTING: DISCOVERING NEW WORK (5 days) Come ready to try something new, or with a latent idea that has yet to manifest. Dinnerware, teapots, vases, platters, and cups and saucers are but a few possibilities to explore. This five-day workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore and expand their knowledge of form and utility through the use of molds and slip casting. Andrew will discuss different approaches for designing prototypes and making molds, how to formulate slip specific to your needs, and explore how the workshop can initiate new directions in your work. Students should come with questions and ready to stretch their skill, knowledge, and experience. It will be possible to make one complex mold or several small ones.

We will cast — but not fire — the molds created in this workshop.

METAL ON MATERIAL (10 weeks) Work in both the textiles and metalsmithing department as you learn how to combine two different materials work while working with both textile and metalsmithing techniques to create wearable or sculptural art for body adornment, jewelry, small sculpture or wall pieces. Fiber techniques including felting, dyeing, embroidery and hand sewing will be covered, and the metalsmithing component will teach you how to saw-pierce, texture, solder and fold form metal. ALUMINUM CHAINMAILLE (5 weeks) In this class you’ll discover the possibilities of working with aluminum to produce lightweight, colorful jewelry.

With some simple twists of metal rings, you’ll learn to weave a number of chainmaille designs. You’ll work with bright aluminum and anodized aluminum to give your jewelry a special pop of color. The possibilities are endless with chainmaille as you learn a number of techniques to make bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. ETCHING (5 weeks) This workshop will explore exciting ways to add texture to metal.

You will be able to work with your own drawings or copyright free designs by experimenting with two techniques to image-transfer the designs. We’ll begin with “low-tech” options by using readily available etchant solutions and direct drawing methods and work up to photo etching with nitric acid solutions to etch sterling silver, brass and copper. Prerequisite: Beginning Metalsmithing or First-Time Jeweler.

SPECIAL WORKSHOP HAND AND HAMMER ENGRAVING (2-day) Gravers are some of the most useful and versatile tools a metalsmith can own. Whether you’re engraving jewelry, monogramming initials or setting a stone, learn how to use gravers in this beginner’s course taught by one of only a handful Master Engravers in the United States, Les Bryant, Le Graveur de Vol. Students will become familiar with the three most common gravers, learn the secrets to shaping and sharpening them, practice cutting straight and curved lines, practice border techniques and background textures, and learn the basics of using a bright cutter to further embellish their work. Students will learn the difference between hand and hammer engraving, as well as experiment with a hammer handpiece powered by a flex shaft. All the techniques, including stone setting (bead and flush), will be practiced on copper plates held in a beginner’s ball vise. All tools are provided for this workshop. HYDRAULIC PRESS II (5 weeks) This workshop continues to investigate the possibilities of the hydraulic press by pairing the machine with a variety of accessories. We will begin by using the press to simultaneously create texture and form in metal.

Then we will carve a “punch” that will be used in conjunction with the hydraulic press to achieve a variety of three-dimensional forms in metal. Finally we will experiment with mushroom stakes and the press to make a unique formed bangle bracelet. Materials are available for purchase from the instructor. GLASS FLAMEWORKING, FUSING & CASTING

Explore several different glass techniques such as beadmaking, fusing, kiln casting and sculpture.

All levels of students are supported in an educational and relaxed setting. Join us on the third floor to create beautiful glass forms. Closed toe shoes and cotton clothing required.

GLASS BEAD OPEN STUDIO Work on projects and improve skills outside of class in our highly recommended open studio. Punch cards are available for students enrolled in a class at a reduced cost, $50 for 5 sessions, or purchase single sessions for $12. Previous students not currently enrolled in a class may purchase punch cards for $75 for 5 sessions. Glass and mandrels are available for sale; tools will be available for use. A monitor will be on hand to answer questions but not instruct.

NEW! GLASS FUSING OPEN STUDIO Work on projects outside of class in our Sunday Fusing Open Studio.

This time is for students who have taken at least two 5-week fusing classes in the past 6 months. The fee is $22 and it includes one 8 ½ x 11 box to fill, the use of tools, firings and scrap glass. The Lillstreet Textile Department is a growing do-it-yourself community interested in traditional and contemporary craft media. Our newly renovated studios offer classes for all levels in a variety of techniques: sewing and garment construction, quilting, screen-printing, dyes, knitting and much more.

New students can join a class confident that they will learn the basic skills required to complete one-ofa-kind pieces. Returning students use our space to prepare for craft fairs, produce inventory for online sales, or to continue the development of their fine art portfolio. ACID DYES W/ RICE PASTE RESIST (5 weeks) Introduce yourself to Japanese design through books and slides provided by the instructor. Transfer your pattern designs onto silk fabrics using the rice paste resist technique.

Similar to the batik process, yet easier and safer to use since there are no fumes. Learn how to use a “Tsutsu” (a tool like a pastry cone) for applying resists, and then paint acid dyes onto the fabric to be set by our professional bullet steamer.

Students provide fabric after first class. Materials fee covers all dye and resist ingredients.

PRINT, FUSE AND STITCH (10 weeks) Transform original drawings or found imagery into fabric art using a variety of techniques in both textile studios.

Workshops BLOCK PRINTING ON FABRIC (1 day) Draw, transfer, carve and print your design onto fabric through this traditional art of India. Create beautiful bold prints onto loose yardage, t-shirts, hand towels, scarves, tote bags, etc through the uncomplicated method of hand block printing. Most materials provided, additional blocks and printable goods available for purchase. Students are encouraged to bring in their own fabrics to the workshop, however fabric is available for purchase from the instructor.

ALTER EGO DYES WORKSHOP (1 day) Alter ego dyes are designed to dye Devore silk/rayon blends, where two colors can be achieved in one dye bath. The silk dyes will only affect the silk parts of the fabric, and the rayon dyes will only color the rayon parts of the fabric. One Devore scarf will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring in more of their own fabrics to test out the new dyes.

Learn double-sided printing and registration as well as how to use your “misprints” and paper scraps to great work in the third dimension. Kate will discuss paper types, surfaces and their ability to hold shape. She will also show different types of glues and how to score and fold to assemble shapes.

PILE ON THE LAYERS! (5 weeks) Let’s get creative with tactile materials and the scanner. We’ll be piling and layering many different textures of materials in clear boxes, scanning them, and then using the printed image to create imaginative masterpieces. Tissue paper, sand, oobleck, and paper pulp are some of the materials we’ll be using.

KINDERCLAY (5 weeks) Each week will provide an opportunity for creative expression through the shaping of clay. We’ll use coils, slabs, and pinch pots to make animals, bowls and cups, and much more! This class will provide individual attention and enable each child to develop his or her personal style.

DRAWING FROM NATURE (5 weeks) Using the natural world as inspiration, this class provides an opportunity for students to blend traditional painting, drawing, and collage techniques with digital imaging processes. We’ll explore nature by drawing and observing our natural world and then get in the lab and use technology to scan, alter, and collage using our observational drawings. Learn basic Photoshop skills such as digitizing source material, cropping, selection tools, brushes, paint tools, and layers.

HANDBUILDING & WHEELTHROWING (10 weeks) This class is a great opportunity to try your hand at clay. We will spend time learning the basic techniques of hand-building, then move onto the wheel, while making great pots and unique sculpture.

MOVIE MAKING (5 weeks) Screenplay writing, costume design, cinematography, directing, editing, music composition, lighting, and more. Work as a team with your classmates to write and produce a short film. A premiere will take place during the last class and each student will get a burned DVD of the movie to take home.

This camp includes a day trip to the Oriental Institute Egyptian Gallery. The camp, which takes place at Lillstreet, also includes a one-day visit to the Oriental Institute Museum to explore The Joseph and Mary Grimshaw Egyptian Gallery.
