CERAMICS
CERAMICS clay department offers classes for
all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.
BEGINNING / ADVANCED BEGINNING WHEELTHROWING
BEGINNING / ADVANCED BEGINNING HANDBUILDING
Beginning students will develop fundamental throwing techniques while returning students refine their techniques to create more complex forms. Be inspired by those around you and challenged by your personal goals. Teacher demonstrations are designed for multilevel students. Class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay.
Whether your aim is functional or sculptural ceramics, learn the basic techniques of handbuilding as you work with slabs, coils and pinching to create virtually anything you can dream up. Use of tools such as molds, slab roller and extruder will be demonstrated. Class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay.

Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. You will work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. New students should plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay. MULTILEVEL THE ART OF FOOD
CERAMICS
(10 WEEKS)
This class centers on rituals of everyday eating and the making of handmade vessels to enhance and personalize the experience. Discussions include exploring your own history of food, family and the use of local or homegrown ingredients. A guest speaker will share their passion for food. Class will culminate with a feast of the best of what the season brings. Monday 7-10pm

FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE (10 WEEKS)
Students will explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. There will be class discussions on surface treatment for sculpture. A model will be used as needed and fee collected in class.

MOSAICS WITH ARTREACH (5 WEEKS)
To celebrate Lillstreet’s 40th anniversary and ArtReach’s 25th, help us design and install a mosaic to adorn the walls at Lillstreet. This collaborative project introduces beginners to mosaic making, which includes design and composition, materials and adhesives, cutting and layout and the grouting process. In addition, students will create a small project to take home. No prior art experience necessary. Material fee includes all materials and tools. A portion of the class fee will benefit ArtReach. BEST OF BOTH (10 WEEKS)
If you have basic throwing skills and want to learn about handbuilding, this is the class for you. Throw pots and embellish with handbuilt elements, throw forms and use sections of them in your handbuilt vessels. Coils, slabs and pinch pots can add another dimension to your thrown work. ADVANCED WHEELTHROWING
Saggar firing is for students who appreciate the value in unexpected outcomes and are eager to experiment. We’ll cover information including what forms are best for this type of firing and surface preparation. Students will be involved with the entire process from mixing materials to firing work. Some work outside of class time is required.
Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

ANCIENT POTTERY (10 WEEKS)
INTERMEDIATE HANDBUILDING Build upon existing skills to take your sculptural or functional work to a new level of construction and complexity. Develop ideas and expand your style using the methods of handbuilding— pinch pot construction, slab building, and coiling. Become more proficient with the use of molds, slab rollers and extruders.
Prerequisite: One year of ceramics classes or instructor approval.

Print repeatable images on leatherhard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Learn relief, screenprinting and paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly and indirectly to greenware. Transfer images, textures and patterns to your clay pieces using slips, stains and special inks. Most techniques can be adapted for earthenware.
IDEA EXPLORATION IN HANDBUILDING (10 WEEKS)
Prerequisite: Beginning Handbuilding.
This class is for intermediate and advanced handbuilders to refine past projects or create new ones. Individualized instruction and group discussions will be the primary focus. The goal is to have one or more completed pieces to be photograph ready and discuss in classroom critiques.

This class will focus on the myriad forms of pottery from the ancient world. Students will explore vessels and sculpture from areas of the Middle East such as Egypt and Persia, and create their own synthesis. We will look at the patterns, slip decoration and other techniques that were employed to create these classics. Wheelthrowers and handbuilders welcome. Thursday 10am-1pm
SIMPLY SODA: BEGINNING SODA (10 WEEKS)
Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will increase your knowledge of more complex forms. Through the use of slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and understandable. Participation in all stages of the process including some kiln loading, introduction to firing and unloading outside of class time is required.

ADVANCED TOPICS IN SODA FIRING: PAINT WITH FIRE (10 WEEKS)
Analyze the critical steps necessary to create dynamic and inventive ceramic works utilizing the potter’s wheel. Explore the idea of “painting with fire” by employing the atmospheric firing process of Lillstreet’s urban soda kiln. Students will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Prerequisite: Two sessions of Simply Soda or instructor approval. TRADITIONAL FIGURE SCULPTURE
CERAMICS
(10 WEEKS)
Working weekly from a nude model, students will take a methodical approach to sculpting the figure. Students may choose to sculpt a head, torso or full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, body proportions, poses and gesture. Building techniques and observational skills will be emphasized. Special attention will be given to traditional and nontraditional finishing techniques for sculpture. Sunday, 10am–1pm

WORKSHOPS SODA-FIRED PLANTER (1 DAY)
Using soda clay pressed against a hump mold, create a planter for your deck or garden. Each participant will handbuild one pot during the workshop, adding texture and soda slips to make unique marks. This class is designed for beginning jewelers who want to sample basic skills. Saw piercing, texturing, cold connections and a soldered band ring will be covered. A material kit is required and can be purchased on the first day of class.
Learn basic enameling techniques such as sifting, stenciling, sgrafitto and basse-taille by kiln-firing colorful powdered glass enamels on copper. Acquire a range of skills to create your own vibrantly colored designs for the projects of your choice. An enamel kit is recommended and available for purchase on the first day of class. Copper sheet, pre-cut shapes and additional enamels will be available for purchase from the instructor.

Become comfortable with basic torch techniques while creating simple bead shapes with a variety of fundamental decorating styles. Shaping, heat control, color, use of tools, classroom equipment and studio safety will be covered. Classes will involve demonstrations, discussions, individual instruction and plenty of practice time. An overview of how to finish your beautiful beads will be discussed. A glass kit is recommended and available for purchase on the first day of class.

BUILDING SKILLS IN BRONZE
METALSMITHING & GLASS
(5 WEEKS)
BRONZclay, a material made of metal particles, organic binder and moisture, is the newest “flavor” of metal clay, available in a variety of hues. Sculpting, texturing, molding and proper firing are just a few of the many techniques covered in this course. Sunday 10am-1pm

METAL COLORATION & PATINA PROCESSES
BEYOND BEGINNER: ELEMENTS OF BEAD DESIGN
Achieve rich and diverse colorations on metal by creating a series of color studies on copper and brass using both hot and cold patina processes. Buried, wrapped, fumed, sprayed and brushed applications will be demonstrated. Learn to incorporate dyes, pigments, metal leaf, and colored waxes to achieve dazzling results. Use of creative cold connections will be discussed. Metal available for purchase from the instructor.
We will start by reviewing beginning torch techniques and continue with a focus on heat control, consistency and confidence. Explore color combinations and experiment with composition and shaping. Learn methods for creating patterns with dots and stringers and spend plenty of time perfecting your encasing techniques. Mandrels and glass available for purchase from instructor.

Develop and achieve higher skill levels of design, soldering, stone setting and finishing. Students will also explore patinas and other means of joining metals. This is the perfect class for those students not yet comfortable enough to move into an intermediate level class.

ETCHING
(5 WEEKS) Learn basic techniques for etching to create texture, patterns and images on metal. Experiment with different resists such as spray paint, paint pens, permanent ink stamp pads, PNP paper, nail polish and adhesive film. Etched plates may also be used to texture metal using the rolling mill. Surface treatments will be discussed. PNP paper and metal will be available for purchase. Prerequisite: One session of Beginning Metalsmithing.

Wood is a great alternative material to incorporate into your jewelry or small sculpture. Combine wood with metal using traditional metalsmithing techniques to shape, embellish and finish wooden forms. Explore the three-dimensional possibilities of hard waxes for carving and soft waxes for modeling. Students can expect to complete two small pieces such as rings, charms or miniature sculptures. Two castings will be done in class or waxes may be brought to a production caster for a nominal fee. Monday 6:30-9:30pm

Both affordable and lightweight, steel is a great material to use without the high cost. Design, simple mechanisms, tricks for making multiples, various methods of finishing and marketing and promotion will be discussed. Each week will focus on a different type of jewelry, as students are encouraged to design within a certain motif that they are inspired by. Wednesday 2-5pm

Explore steel as an affordable, lightweight alternative material for a variety of chains. Learn and experiment with multiple soldering and riveting methods using 20ga10ga steel wire. Personalize your chains with easy, non-toxic finishing techniques and accents of your choice. All levels are welcome. Tuesday 2-5pm

Familiarize yourself with the workings of the hydraulic press. Learn embossing and debossing with pre-made patterns, wire and found objects. We will make our own lucite molds for pressing three-dimensional forms and discuss fold forming. (5 WEEKS)
Be more proficient at stone setting and soldering by focusing on bezel setting. Learn to create bezels more quickly and with ease. Step bezels and decorative bezels will also be covered in this class. Bring cabochon stones to the first class. Materials may be purchased from the instructor.

Powder coating is a fun and economical way to color your brass or copper jewelry or small sculptures. Learn to powder coat, layer colors, draw on the surface, mask off patterns and fabricate work to be powder coated. A respirator or mask is required. Prerequisite: Beginning Metalsmithing. INTERMEDIATE ENAMELING
Create your own cherished heirloom in the form of a locket. Learn techniques in designing and making intimate, wearable containers. Methods of construction, forming, and appropriate mechanisms will be discussed and demonstrated. Bring a photo, memento or found object to the first class.
Students with prior enameling experience will enhance their skills to enliven their small-scale art and jewelry projects. Intermediate to advanced traditional kiln-fired enameling techniques such as basse taille, sgraffito, en ronde bosse, and limoges will be demonstrated. EXPERIMENTAL ENAMELING: GOING OUT OF BOUNDS (5 WEEKS)
Take a journey beyond the basics and explore techniques such as deliberate under- and over-firing, torch firing, fusing and embedding glass and metals, inscribing surface designs, working with fire scale and oxides, firing onto wire and mesh and more. Novice and experienced students alike will expand their skills while redefining enameling beyond its traditional boundaries. INTRODUCTION TO ENAMELING WITH FINE SILVER (1 DAY)
This workshop will explore how enameling with .999 fine silver differs from copper enameling and introduce how various techniques are enhanced by the use of fine silver. Students will produce sample pieces using the basse taille, paillons or simple cloisonné techniques. Metal and enamels will be available for purchase.

IMAGE TRANSFER ON ENAMELS
Argentium Sterling (AS) is an alloy containing Germanium and more than 92.5% pure silver. It conducts heat differently than sterling, is highly tarnish-resistant, firescale-free and can be hardened in a toaster oven or kiln. Argentium is more malleable and easier to granulate, fold form and fuse than sterling. Methods for annealing and hardening will be demonstrated. Samples or finished pieces can be created.

DROP-IN FIGURE DRAWING Drop-in figure drawing sessions offer an excellent opportunity for beginning to advanced students to practice their perception and drawing skills. Learn the techniques of traditional landscape drawing through a combination of presentations, demos and exercises. Generate dynamic multimedia imagery through collage. We will look at new ways to compose space, work with found materials, think critically about material choices and develop abstract imagery from representational sources. Using oil paints as the medium, learn the foundation techniques and relationships needed to successfully paint wet-on-wet. Topics include the connection between shape, value and hue in creating definition, drawing with a brush and strategies for painting wet into wet. Building an understanding of visual concepts enables students to paint directly in color. The bravura strokes of a Velazquez or Sargent require an intimate knowledge of how light travels across a form, how values shift, the interconnectedness of color and the varied quality of edges. This class is ideal for oil painters and pastel artists.
Your ideas become the subject of individualized instruction as you expand your skills as a painter. Expand your quilting/sewing practice by printing your own patterns onto fabric. We’ll cover design basics and work on assignments to develop skills through practice. Discover how to use lighting for better photographic image making. Students will learn the basics of using available, cool, strobe, and mixed light to create evocative images. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT (5 WEEKS)
Push your photographic portraiture beyond “snapshot” mode. Through in-class exercises, assignments and critiques we’ll explore composition, light, positioning, and environment. Students will also be introduced to the work of various portrait artists through image lectures. Basic digital photography skills are required. DSLR and tripod are highly recommended.
IMAGE MANIPULATION FOR MULTIMEDIA ARTISTS Move the digital image beyond the 2D plane using a mixture of digital image taking and tactile image manipulation. The class incorporates stitching, distressing, painting and drawing among other techniques. Each week students will be introduced to new techniques through class demos.

CHICAGO AT NIGHT (5 WEEKS)
Chicago is a wonderfully luminous subject for photography, especially at night. In this course you’ll make amazing photographs of the city using techniques like long exposure and HDR. We’ll meet on location to capture this city from stunning and unusual vantage points including the street, the lake, above, and below. Meeting places will be accessible by public transit or carpooling. DSLR camera preferred, tripods are highly recommended. Thursday 7-10pm

Tell a visual story through the collection of images while exploring and challenging the traditional notions of the photograph as an indexical object. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, each one with its own colorful identity. We will visit different neighborhoods, learning their history and geography, photographing each place to capture the sights, the people, even the sounds and tastes. ONE-ON-ONE: INDEPENDENT PROJECTS IN DESIGN AND ANIMATION
Create digital patterns from your sketches and paintings using Photoshop and Illustrator. Utilizing tools available in our digital and textiles studios, students submit their designs to printing companies to produce full color yardage, apparel or home decor goods. PRIVATE LESSONS Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn, but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from.
• A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

CANCELLATIONS Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative Retreats, Visiting Artist Workshops, and Summer Camps have separate cancellation policies.
