It’s been an amazing year, filled with new opportunities and a few challenges. We’re really excited about new spaces and new (or newly revitalized) programs that have become a part of Lillstreet. The printmaking department has made a big leap in the newly remodeled studio, and we’re glad to see an ever-growing group of students make use of the new press and equipment. The Loft and Ignite are great additions to the community as well. The Loft offers a fantastic space for private events, special classes, guest lectures, arts-based professional development, and teambuilding, creative retreats, and more. The Ignite teambuilding programs have been a big hit, and we’ve been excited to welcome Kraft, Google, The University of Chicago, and Wrigley among many others to Lillstreet. If you haven’t had a chance to see the Loft, make the trip up the street and take a peek. The Drawing Workshop also joined Lillstreet this year. For almost 40 years, the workshop offered a serious, classically oriented program and studio for drawing and paining. With the retirement of founder George Sotos, Lillstreet took over the reins and will continue to offer programming based in his principles. The workshop offers a great space for working with the figure as well as all other forms of painting and drawing. We will be offering the twice weekly open drop-in figure drawing sessions and a roster of classes for beginning to advanced students interested in a classic approach to drawing and painting. We will also start an illustration program in 2014, and will be offering some great new classes in the spring. The Drawing Workshop is just across the tracks at 4410 North Ravenswood Avenue, and I hope that you’ll take time to stop in when you have the chance. As 2014 approaches, we’re looking forward to a new season of making art and creating and sharing new ideas. Community has always been important at Lillstreet, and we’re thankful and grateful for the continuing support and constant inspiration offered by all of our students. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

2 WINTER CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEKS OF JANUARY 13 AND FEBRUARY 17
The Drawing Workshop WORKSHOPS & CLASSES
THE DRAWING WORKSHOP IS THE NEWEST PART OF LILLSTREET ART CETNER. Founded 40 years ago by George Sotos at Tree Studios,, the workshop is curently located at 4410 North Ravenswood Avenue, right across the train tracks from Lillstreet. The Drawing Workshop offers classes and drop-in drawing sessions for amateur and professional artists looking a for a classic approach to drawing & painting, and has strong emphasis on foundational work and life drawing. The Drawing Workshop foundation focuses on perception, on teaching students see. Artists draw, paint, and sculpt at the workshop, and the classes seek to develop a strong visual vocabulary, allowing understanding of the 3-dimensional framework and harmony of the natural form. With the retirement of George Sotos, Lillstreet stepped in and offered to continue both the facility and the education programs of the workshop. We strive to continue his legacy and offer a serious venue for life drawing and classical arts education in painting and drawing. The workhsop students are excited for the conintuation of the workshop and the presence and leadership of Lillstreet Art Center. We will both continue and enrich the opportunities offereed at the workshop with our quality instruction and unflagging supporting for the arts isntruction in a professional but warm, engaging environment. Open drop-in figure drawing session featuring a live model are offeren on Wednesday evening and Sunday monring. For a full roster of classes offered at the Drawing Workshop in the Winter 2014 session, please see page 24.

FIRST-TIME ARTISTS
Members form the backbone of the Lillstreet community, and the Membership program offers a great opportunity for students and community participants to get involved while supporting Lillstreet. What does Membership offer? The program allows students meaningful discounts on classes and workshops – and on open studio weeks during the early winter/holiday interim period. Class discounts will more than pay for the membership over the year, but you’ll also save 10% on all of your gallery purchases and receive discounts at partner organizations around town. One of the biggest benefits offered to Members is the right to apply to be in our annual Members & Student Show and Sale that happens every fall. This show highlights the work of 60 or more artists working at Lillstreet – and only Members are eligible to participate. It’s a chance for our Members to really show their new work to the community, their friends and family, and Chicago in general. This year we’ll be adding new members benefits including free access to artist talks, a summer barbeque or ice cream social, special members only shopping opportunities, and much more. We want to make Membership at Lillstreet an exciting opportunity, and you’re suggestions on what we can do to add value are always welcome. Patty Kochaver Starts January 16
This class will give inspiration and ideas to those who struggle with glazing. How the surface of a pot or sculpture is treated is so important, it can make or break a piece. Many of us approach this part of the process with dread. We’ll explore the evolution and development of ideas while incorporating design principles, application techniques and processes borrowed from other mediums to achieve interesting and inspired surfaces. Students will deepen their understanding of the glaze materials they are using, in turn expanding the potential of their designs. We’ll have regular individual and group critiques.

Because these twenty six individuals serve as core support for over three hundred other staff members, it was important to the dean that they were able to have a day to relax and get to know each other better. Sam Hostert, established ceramicist and Lillstreet faculty led the group in building their own ceramic mugs. Sam is no stranger to making beautiful mugs and the group could not have been in more capable hands. By the end of the day, the dean’s core staff, some of whom had never worked with clay before, had each created their own souvenir from the retreat, complete with happy memories. Event organizer, Carl N., stated that this “event was the best retreat our dean’s staff in the Division of the Humanities has had.” Retreats are held in the cozy and eclectic Lillstreet Loft, which has enough space to hold both art activities and lunch. This space worked very well for the dean’s staff, who wanted to have an emphasis on conversation and bonding over a meal, in addition to the activity. Minor changes are bound to happen when organizing a retreat for mid-size groups. Even so, Carl said, “working with Lillstreet was great. They were quick to respond when I had questions and helped to accommodate several changes in our schedule.” The Lillstreet Ignite team strives to be as flexible as possible to create the perfect retreat for any group. When you work with Lillstreet, you work with creative individuals eager to help design a customized activity that fits the needs and wants of your workforce, and provide the best retreat possible. Recuperate from post-holiday madness by spoiling yourself with relaxing yoga, a healthy lunch, and creating a handmade, personalized journal using time-honored techniques.
