ADVANCED WHEELTHROWING

( 10 WEEKS )

Design your own pots and develop a personal aesthetic, while learning techniques to make complex forms. Weekly demos and experimenting with new glaze combinations will help you to develop a signature look.

Work independently and in collaboration with the instructor and classmates on home and garden projects.

This is an opportunity for the intermediate/advanced student to get to the next level through a customized plan of exercises and goals, with individual attention from the instructor. Whether you’ve been working on lighter cylinders or more advanced forms this will be a chance for you to work beyond your usual abilities. We’ll monitor progress and incorporate individual critiques throughout the session.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence to throw taller and bigger, and to create pieces with nuance. Try new and more advanced glazing techniques in a class designed to help you create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

DREAMS, MYTHS, STORIES IN CLAY SCULPTURE

SMALL SCULPTURE AND DOLLMAKING

This class is about exploring the use of the figure in sculpture. Applying a basic knowledge of anatomy students may create an abstract, realistic, anthropomorphic or animal sculpture. Students may choose to apply a kinetic element to their work through figure articulation. All levels welcome.

Explore personal stories, dreams and myths in handbuilt clay forms. Ways to form, texture and finish work will be taught to enable your ideas to come to life, whether in works large or small, flat or tall. Every class member has the opportunity to share insights, inspirations or questions during a weekly period of sharing. METAL MEETS CLAY ( 10 WEEKS ) Learn to create functional or sculptural works by combining metal and clay. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas and will be shown a variety of techniques in both mediums. In ceramics, basic hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching, constructing slabs, and finishing will be covered. In metals, students will be introduced to saw piercing, cold connections, light torch work and basic forging techniques. SIMPLY SODA: BEGINNING SODA ( 10 WEEKS ) Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results. You’ll make pots for the soda kiln, and weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will increase your knowledge of more complex forms. You’ll also learn the uses of soda slips and glazes, and the class will make the soda firing process accessible and understandable. Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, introduction to firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required. ADVANCED TOPICS IN SODA FIRING: FORM AND SURFACE ( 10 weeks ) Focus on surface techniques for thrown and altered pieces in order to utilize the distinct atmospheric qualities of Lillstreet’s soda kiln. You’ll continue to expand your repertoire and enhance the development of your personal style by experimenting with a variety of forms, surface texture, materials, patterns, and colors for a synthesis unique to soda firing. Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required. The focus of this class is figurative work. Students will explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. There will be class discussions on surface treatment for sculpture. A model will be used as needed and fee collected in class. All levels welcome.

Choose five consecutive weeks within the term and an instructor to offer individual tutelage for one hour per week. Fee does not include clay or open studio time outside of the five weeks. Approval of the program coordinator, Karen Avery, required.

FIGURE SCULPTURE: WORKING CREATIVELY ( 10 WEEKS ) Working weekly from nude model students will explore the human figure. Topics of discussion will include internal armatures, figure proportions, skeletal structure, surface muscles, pose expression and gesture. A full figure sculpture is encouraged but students may to choose to sculpt a head or torso study. Special attention will be given to finishing techniques for sculpture. Sunday, 10am–1pm

A dwelling is a living space. For this workshop, dwellings may be imaginary or realistic, elaborate or minimal in design. Miniature homes, cottages, public buildings, birdhouses or spirit houses… wherever your imagination lives. Working in terra cotta clay, you, the architect will incorporate slab, coil and handbuilding techniques. Dwellings may be finished with glaze or left natural clay. Saturday, 2-5pm January 19

CATS IN CLAY

FEAR NO GLAZE

BIRD MAKING WORKSHOP

( 1 DAY )

Focusing on the symbols and imagery of various Native American tribes, participants in this workshop will make their own unique stamps out of clay. Once the stamps are bisque fired and returned, these stamps can be used to decorate greenware to create dynamic patterns and textures.

Working with terra cotta clay students will learn to sculpt basic feline anatomy. Students are encouraged to bring a photograph of their favorite cat for glazing reference. Clay, tools, glazes, and firing included. No experience necessary.

Use provided bisque or bring your own to try the cone 10 glaze combinations you’ve always wondered about. Demonstrations will include learning to judge combinations, creating test pieces, and wax, brush, and scratch techniques.

Learn to sculpt a bird out of clay. You may choose to create a realistic bird or let your imagination take flight with a fantasy bird creation. Clay, tools, glazes, and firing included. No experience necessary.

The spray booth can be used to finely layer several coats of different glazes or to spraying heavily fading to light applications. Bring your bisque and come to have fun learning a new glaze application technique to add a new look to your pottery and sculptures.

This advanced beginner class will help students be able to develop and achieve higher skill levels of design, soldering, stone setting and finishing. Students will also be able to explore patinas and other means of joining metals. Want to incorporate steel wire to your jewelry? Learn fiber techniques such as crocheting and knitting with steel wire for simple structure in a unique way. The use of these techniques in sterling silver and copper wire will be discussed. Saturday 2-5pm

CHAINMAILLE ( 5 WEEKS ) This comprehensive course covers several basic weaves, along with tips for “speedweaving.” You’ll see many samples and explore how slight variations change the look of the weave. Students will receive enough jump rings for 8 bracelets, some of which will be completed in class. This course covers the following weaves: Double Spiral, Wiggle, European 4-in-1 (Mesh), Rosettes, Byzantine, Box (Queen’s Chain), Japanese 12-in-2 (Japanese Lace) and Jens Pind. This class will cover the complicated world of hollow forms. We will start with fabricating a basic hollow formed ring. Then we will be move bigger to bracelets. Finally, we will be introduced to the hydraulic press and how to make pillow forms with it. We will make our own 2 sided dies and use the rolling mill to make our own patterned sheet to create with.

This class will explore exciting ways to add texture and graphics to metal. You will be able to work with your own drawings or copyright free designs by experimenting with two techniques in image transferring. We’ll begin with ‘low tech’ options using drawing methods and ferric chloride etching solution and work up to photo etching with nitric acid solutions. Etching on copper, brass, and silver will all be covered.

In the first class, students will become familiar with the use of tools, materials and the basic techniques for creating fused glass cabochons. Learn proper cutting, layout, design and firing procedures. Then students will learn how to make bezel and simple prong settings for their glass creations. Saw-piercing, texturing, soldering and cold connections will be discussed. Fusible glass, firings, copper and brass are included. Dichroic glass and silver may be purchased from instructor. FINE SILVER CLAY AND GLASS CABOCHON PENDANT

Enameling is the ancient art of fusing colorful powdered glass onto copper to create decorative art and jewelry designs. In this multi-level class students will enhance their enameling skill level and enliven their small-scale art and jewelry projects while learning the more advanced traditional kiln-fired enameling techniques such as basse taille, champlevé, sgraffito, en ronde bosse, limoges, paillon and cloisonné. Basic metalsmithing skills are helpful, but not essential. Pre-requisite: FirstTime Enameling or basic level enameling experience. Metal is available for purchase from the instructor.

This class is designed for aspiring artists who want to learn the basics of metalsmithing/ jewelry making or improve the knowledge they already have. Take your metal clay to the next level by creating jewelry that includes dichroic glass, fused art glass with amazing depth and color. We will create an elegant silver platform for this pendant, then secure the glass cabochon with additional fine silver clay bezeling and hand-formed “prongs.” We’ll complete our unique pieces with decorated, dimensional bails. Students are welcome to bring their own fused glass, COE 90 preferred; cabs are available for purchase from the instructor as well. Special Workshops ENAMELING WEEKEND WORKSHOP: CHAMPLEVÉ ENAMELING WITH ACID ETCHING Throughout history artists have used acids and enamels for creating colorful and intricate designs with precious metals. Enameling is the process of fusing glass to metal. Students will be given the knowledge for creating acid etched designs on copper and silver. Champlevé is an enameling technique in which troughs or cells are etched, carved or cast into the surface of a metal object and filled with enamel. The piece is then fired until the enamel melts and when cooled, the surface of the object is ground down, re-fired and polished.

METALSMITHING

( 2 DAY ) EXPLORE, CREATE, AND INNOVATE! Learn how to harness the design and form possibilities of the hydraulic press. After an introduction to hydraulic press safety and care, learn how to combine silhouette die forms with embossing for limitless possibilities! This class will focus on hydraulic press basics: how to use a hydraulic press safely; usefulness of urethanes of different thicknesses and hardnesses; making and using embossing dies and silhouette dies. Use commercially made dies, and learn how to make your own unique embossing and silhouette dies. Silhouette dies can create forms that are perfectly matching opposites, great for pendants, beads, lockets, containers, boxes, or bud vases. We’ll examine how we can use the same die to make different one-of-a-kind pieces or multiple units/beads for a bracelet or necklace as well as production possibilities. REPOUSSE - French - meaning “to push back”; The art of shapes and decorations with patterns raised in relief made by hammering and pressing on the reverse side used especially on metal.

Work on projects and improve skills outside of class in our highly recommended open studio. Punch cards are available for students enrolled in a class at the reduced cost $60 (5 sessions for $12 each); current students may also purchase single sessions for $14 each. Punch cards are also available for those not enrolled in a class for $85 (5 sessions for $17 each). Glass and mandrels are available for sale; tools will be available for use. A monitor will be on hand to answer questions but not instruct. Punch cards may be purchased at the front desk.

Work on projects outside of class in open studio exclusively for fusing. This time is for students who have taken at least two 4 or 5 week fusing classes in the past 6 months. The fee is $25 and includes one 8 ½ x 11 box to fill, the use of tools, firings and scrap glass. An extra $18 will be charged for each additional 8 ½ x 11 box filled. There is a variety of sheet glass for sale in the studio. A monitor is on hand to help answer questions but not to instruct. Create a thick fused glass block in this 3-hour workshop. Several construction options will be presented along with an introduction to working with embellishments, paints, decals and more. Students will learn to dam their glass to prevent it from spreading when molten. This technique lends itself well to collage artists or those who like to layer color and texture. Each student will create one 5” x 5” x 1/2” block.

In this class, students will explore the endless possibilities of landscape painting. A variety of brushwork and color schemes will be taught from Art Historical examples such as Claude Monet, Camille Corot, and Gustave Courbet. The primary focus in this class will be on learning to create the illusion of deep space using value color, and various perspective techniques. Either acrylic or oil paints may be used. Bring a medium sized canvas and paints to the first class.

Learn how to paint with wax in this multi-level class. Use pigments, damar crystals, various types of waxes as well as other ingredients to create multi-layered, heavily textured to paint on a variety of surfaces. Work with metals tools and special brushes as well as torches, heat guns and irons. Encapsulate additional materials and collage the surface. Artists of all media will enjoy the limitless possibilities of working in encaustics. Translate your designs into repeating patterns by mastering registration, straight repeats, half drops and composition. Learn the importance of scale and color, as well as several experimental repeat techniques to create beautiful, unique yardage. The goal is to get you well on your way to understanding, developing and mastering the art of repeat patterns. A follow-up to the Intro to Sergers workshop, this crash course shows students how to use our brand-new coverstitch machine. SImilar to a serger, a coverstitch machine uses multiple thread sources to create professional-grade seams and edges stitches. Slightly more complicated than a regular serger, the coverstitch machine can make additional overlock stitches and new seams/hems away from the side of the fabric. Great for knitwear as well as learning the cover-stitch for professional hems and finished edges. Are you afraid of getting away from the “automatic” mode? Learn how to use your camera with all of its various settings. Learn about composition, subject choice and thematic ideas. Clear lectures and hands-on exercises will have you shooting like a pro. The course will also cover the basics of image enhancement in the digital lab. Basic computer skills and a digital camera with manual controls (DSLR preferred) are required.

Good lighting is often the difference between an average photograph and a great one. Serious photographers like to control their light in a professional studio. This course will teach you the basic concepts of studio lighting design, and give you hands-on instruction with hot lights, strobes, soft boxes, colored gels, and reflectors. Students will light their own portraits and table top set-ups.

This class will teach techniques for photographing architectural interior spaces. We’ll visit and photograph commercial, educational, and religious spaces. We’ll learn about lenses and cameras, composition, and how to work with both available and supplemental lighting. Students should have a DSLR camera with a lens capable of wide angle, and a tripod.

World famous art photographers like Andreas Gursky, Edward Burtynski, Sally Mann, and Ansel Adams all have used view cameras to get exceptionally sharp images. This class will show you how to operate such a camera and get amazing results. We will shoot film, then scan for resolution that no DSLR can come close to. Photographs will then be edited digitally and printed on our state of the art printers. Camera techniques such as perspective control and tilt/ shift will be discussed. Students will need to purchase film and pay for film processing.

This course is for the advanced amateur, or budding professional who wants to take their photography that one next step. Come with project ideas you wish to develop into portfolios for exhibition, publication, or other goals. Topics will include portfolio development, gallery exhibition, advanced shooting techniques, advanced digital editing and printing, book publishing, and more. This freeform class allows for plenty of one-on-one instruction, free from assignment constraints.

Want a fun activity to do together? Have a hammering good time in this class, as you and your kids learn saw piercing, texturing and cold connections. Projects will include finger puppets, picture frames and students’ one-of-a-kind creations.

Use a compass and straight edge to make stunning optical art inspired by Victor Vasarely and other op artists. Students will learn about mathematical transformations and use the fundamentals of plane geometry and angle measurement.

Custom Classes, Corporate Events, and Private Parties

Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. The Empty Bowls Project is a nationwide effort by potters to end hunger. Lillstreet Art Center is proud to host this 6th annual event to benefit First Slice, a local hunger-fighting organization. Join us for a modest meal of soup and bread, served in a bowl donated by a ceramic artist that you may take home as a reminder of all the other bowls you will have helped to fill.
