Summer Camps

Spring at Lillstreet Art Center emerges with opportunities for students to develop more than ever before. For the past few months, we’ve been renovating, expanding, and refreshing facilitates and are now ecstatic to announce the opening of Lillstreet Loft, our professional development space at 4437 N Ravenswood, which will offer extended options for private groups, businesses, and beyond to reach their fullest creative potential. On the third floor of the Art Center we’ve added a large jewelry classroom, a dedicated photography studio, an expanded wash-out room, and a revamped, repainted printmaking department complete with a brand new Takach press. We continue to build community with a new monthly series. Last month, we launched our Emerging Artists Lecture Series showcasing the latest work being made by artists right now, right here in Chicago. Be sure to regularly check our website for the latest events. Our upcoming exhibitions include a painting; sculpture and ceramics show exploring geometry running concurrently with a textiles show featuring sewing. This May, the gallery will transform into a lively urban garden, complete with live botanicals when Art and the Urban Garden returns for a second year. We hope you stay connected with us whether it be through enrolling in classes, strolling through the gallery, or attending an event. We can’t wait to see you at Lillstreet Art Center and Lillstreet Loft this spring.

You will also learn to use other larger tools, including molds, slab roller, and extruder. This is not a prerequisite for the 10-week Beginning Handbuilding classes. Beginning students should plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Includes 12 pounds of clay.

Delve in and explore the mystery of the potter’s wheel. New beginning students will develop fundamental potthrowing techniques while returning students will refine their technique to create more complex forms. Be inspired by other students’ progress as well as be challenged by your goals. Teachers demo for multi-levels and assist all students. Beginning students should plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet.

People are drawn to the timeless, quiet, direct contact of handbuilding in clay. Whether your aim is functional or sculptural ceramics, master the basics to learn ways to work with slabs, coils and pinching to create virtually anything you can dream up. Then, build more! Learn to use the larger tools of the Handbuilder: molds, slab roller, and extruder. Beginning students should plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet.

DREAMS, MYTHS, STORIES IN CLAY SCULPTURE ( 10 WEEKS ) Explore personal stories, dreams and myths in handbuilt clay forms. Ways to form, texture and finish work will be taught to enable your ideas to come to life, whether in works large or small, flat or tall. Every class member has the opportunity to share insights, inspirations or questions during a weekly period of sharing. SAGGAR FIRING ( 10 WEEKS ) Saggar firing is a refractory (fire resistant) container, used by the Chinese centuries ago to keep impurities such as fly ash off fine porcelain work. Today, artists are using saggars to fill with organic combustible materials and metal salts which give rich surfaces created by smoke, fire, draft and chance for non-functional art works. There is always more to explore with this intriguing method of firing and results will beg more experimentation. This class is for the intermediate to advanced student and requires some time outside of class to load or unload kilns.

You have mastered the basics; now challenge yourself to throw a better pot. Articulate what a better pot means to you! Design your own pottery and develop a personal aesthetic, while learning techniques to make complex forms. Weekly demos and experimenting with new glaze combinations will help you to develop your signature look.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence to throw taller and bigger and to create pieces with nuance. Try new and more advanced glazing techniques in a class designed to help you create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

METAL MEETS CLAY ( 10 WEEKS ) Learn to create functional or sculptural works by combining metal and clay. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas and will be shown a variety of techniques in both mediums. In ceramics, basic hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching, constructing slabs, and finishing will be covered. In metals, students will be introduced to saw piercing, cold connections, light torch work and basic forging techniques. ISLAMIC TRADITIONS ( 10 WEEKS ) Back by popular demand! This class will continue to explore the decorative traditions of the Islamic world from circa 800-1800 A.D. The range to sample of styles, techniques, and expression is vast. Students will adapt designs/colors and put their creative ‘spin ‘ on these traditional forms. Ride the wave of the popular trend and interest in art tiles. Whether for gifts or to beautify your own walls, learn to create an art form for the ages. You will learn different techniques in tile making and mold making, with an end result of beautiful pieces

Develop a palate of nonfunctional Cone 6 oxidation glazes; students will create pieces designed for specific surface effects. Topics discussed will range from learning basic glaze chemistry to making accurate test tiles for their work to the application and layering of glazes.

You’ll also learn the uses of soda slips and glazes, and the class will make the soda firing process accessible and understandable. ADVANCED TOPICS IN SODA FIRING: APPLYING YOUR ART ( 10 WEEKS ) Have you ever wondered just how to share your amazing ceramic artwork with the world? If so, then wonder no more! Students will work towards creating gallery ready pieces utilizing Lillstreet’s soda kiln. Furthermore, we will discuss how to seek out and apply to exhibitions, explore photographing ceramic artwork on a budget, and how to pack and ship pieces properly. Students will be encouraged to apply to at least one call for entries, however it is not mandatory. Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required. Prerequisite: two sessions of Simply Soda or instructor’s permission.

( 1 DAY ) Creating a sculpture in wax is the first step to casting in bronze. The beauty in sculpting in wax is like no other material. The ease of the material allows for rich surface texture and extraordinary detail. Working from model, students may choose to sculpt a 6” to 8” size head, torso or full figure. PINCH POT PLANTERS ( 1 DAY ) What a better way to get rid of the winter blues than preparing for Spring? In this workshop we will be making a pinch pot planter that will be fully functional for herbs or any plant of your choosing. Using Terra Cotta, we will form windowsill planters and drip trays. This comprehensive course covers several basic weaves, along with tips for “speedweaving.” You’ll see many samples and explore how slight variations change the look of the weave. Students will receive enough jump rings for 8 bracelets, some of which will be completed in class. This course covers the following weaves: Double Spiral, Wiggle, European 4-in-1 (Mesh), Rosettes, Byzantine, Box (Queen’s Chain), Japanese 12-in-2 (Japanese Lace) and Jens Pind. If you already know one or two of these weaves, you can still take the class and work on different variations of the weave.

Learn to create functional or sculptural works by combining metal and clay. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas and will be shown a variety of techniques in both mediums. In ceramics, basic hand building techniques such as coiling, pinching, constructing slabs, and finishing will be covered. In metals, students will be introduced to saw piercing, cold connections, light torch work and basic forging techniques. This 12-sided figure makes for an eye-catching pendant approximately 1 inch in diameter. Also perfect at the end of a key chain, or a fun ball to hang wherever you like. This is an intermediate level workshop within the Japanese family of chainmaille weaves. Students will choose from a combination of aluminum, copper or jewelry brass rings and receive a pendant bail to match. Instructor will bring pliers for students to use during class.

Due to this bracelet’s slinky, centipede-like movement, its owner will not be able to stop playing with it. This bracelet’s interior can be enhanced with brightly colored enameled copper jump rings, which tend to resemble a lighted tunnel as they fill up the center. This is an advanced level workshop and is difficult due to the small rings used & the general tightness of the weave.

Vroom, Vroom, go! Just published in Wirework magazine Spring 2013 edition! This Racing Stripe bracelet definitely resembles the center stripes on a classic race car. Featuring shiny glass chainmaille with fun seed bead accents on the edge, you’ll zoom through completing this bracelet using only one ring size throughout!

Using tiny stainless steel jump rings, learn a dense Mesh weave called European 6-in-1. Use this pattern to craft a flexible and durable finger ring. You’ll learn how to permanently close this weave on itself, creating one continuous design. This is an intermediate level class, it can be tricky working with these tiny rings. Instructor will bring pliers for students to use during class.

Do you ever find yourself looking for a specific shape made of glass and it doesn’t seem to exist? Do you want to make something to match jewelry you already own to have a complete set? Students will learn how to make a small mold and also make a glass form using that mold. No experience in clay or glass necessary. Students will learn different ways to cut glass. All supplies provided and more glass available for purchase.

Add dimension and texture to your fused glass by exploring the technique of kilncarving. Beautiful shapes and patterns can be created with minimal glass cutting and is a simple way to achieve a bas relief, textured or sculpted look to your kiln formed glass. Proper use of materials, design considerations and safety issues will be covered. Students can expect to create several bas relief tiles plus two finished bowls or plates. Painting, drawing and sculpture students improve your figurative work through deeper understanding of human anatomy. Each week a different area of the body will be discussed then explored with drawing. The class will start by drawing from the skeleton so students will gain a greater understanding of the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delicate framework. Next, working with the model, we will explore the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surface muscles and their function.

Learn how to paint with wax in this multi-level class. Use pigments, damar crystals, various types of waxes as well as other ingredients to create multi-layered, heavily textured to paint on a variety of surfaces. Work with metals tools and special brushes as well as torches, heat guns and irons. Encapsulate additional materials and collage the surface. Artists of all media will enjoy the limitless possibilities of working in encaustics. A supply list will be provided one week before class begins. *Due to the nature this medium, open studio is not available for students working with encaustic paints.

In this beginning class, learn traditional Asian painting techniques on rice paper. This brushwork can also be used to adorn ceramic work or move into contemporary painting. No experience necessary. PRINTMAKING DEPARTMENT CHAIR

MEET JUDY ZEDDIES, THE NEW PRINTMAKING DEPARTMENT CHAIR AT LILLSTREET AND OCCASIONAL FUSING INSTRUCTOR IN THE GLASS DEPARTMENT. JUDY CREATES FASCINATING WORK AS A PRINTMAKER AND WE WERE INTRIGUED BY HER IMAGES OF CHAIRS, AND THIRDLY WE WANTED TO KNOW A LITTLE MORE ABOUT WHO SHE IS AND HOW SHE HAS DEVELOPED HER ARTISTIC PROCESS.

LILLSTREET: So Judy, what compels you to create? JUDY: Deadlines. (laughing.) … and the opportunity to talk to the public about my work and process. I am interested in sharing my experience so that there’s a relationship created, and in educating public about the history of printmaking. Printmaking really demonstrates these personal relationships to the environment. LILLSTREET: Why were you drawn to this medium? JUDY: There is wonderful surprise in the indirectness of printmaking. With painting, you put paint directly on the canvas, with printmaking; there is always a surprise when you pull the ink through. There is always a surprise, hopefully always a pleasant one. LILLSTREET: What themes/issues do you address in your work? JUDY: Furniture, primarily chairs. I use them as a substitute for human figures, to indicate a relationship between the figure and the space. This allows the viewers to bring their own history to the experience of the piece. I’m also interested in the shape of chairs and the positive and negative space, so there’s a graphic component and also a psychological component, which the viewer brings. LILLSTREET: Describe your working process.

LILLSTREET: Which part of the creative process is most exciting/rewarding for you? JUDY: The process of carving blocks or etching of plates. After the image is fully developed, the actual printing is just work. My print editions are limited to 25 or less. I really like to teach, and like to discover what makes the students engage, to see what their creativity generates. LILLSTREET: How does Lillstreet’s community aid in the production of your work?

PRINTMAKING

JUDY: I actually don’t do any sketching. My work is inspired by snippets of folk songs. I always keep a long list of names and phrases that will suggest the title of a piece. From there, I let the words inform the process. I don’t even have a sketchbook.

JUDY: The interaction between the faculty as well as the interaction of teacher to individual students really helps me to see things freshly. Students use techniques that they may have learned accidently that I’m not aware of, which often informs me later. It is a collaborative learning process. LILLSTREET: Why be a part of an Art Center/ specifically Lillstreet? JUDY: For printmakers mostly, they don’t have a a press. Printers gather around the press and potters gather around a kiln—facility. Social interaction and encouragement from instructors and amongst students is part of why I love Lillstreet.

LILLSTREET: What is your ideal workspace? JUDY: I love my studio. It has two etching presses and small letter press. I have great heating control. Mostly I like the privacy of the studio, the windows are high enough that they aren’t easy to stare out of, but they are cheerful and joyful with daylight. LILLSTREET: So outside of art, what are your other interests/ passions? JUDY: I love cooking, and I actually am a trained chef; so fine dining too. I also have an interest in cave tours, and long driving vacations.

Create a lovely knit neck warmer, complete with button closure, just in time for bike rides on cool spring evenings. Learn how to cast on, knit, purl, and other clever knitting tricks. This is a great class for true beginners or if it’s been a long time and your looking for a refresher. Needles and some yarn included.

Work with our resident artist to create a unique piece of furniture! Using fabrics and decorative decisions students will assemble and upholster their very own stool. With the use of a simple form, students will grasp the ideas of armature and upholstery within functional furniture. Topics such as basic sewing skills, pattern making, and fabric printing will be covered while focusing on the trade of upholstery. Use either store bought fabrics or your own printed textiles while learning basic skills such as sewing and pattern making. Our newly expanded and upgraded sewing studio enables students to work large and use heavy-weight fabrics with the industrial machine. Materials fee includes wooden pieces for stool. DYE SURVEY: ACID, MX, INDIGO AND NATURAL DYES ( 10 WEEKS ) Ready to expand your textile practice by trying dyes? Sample MX, acid, indigo and natural dyes that can be used for immersion and screenprinting techniques on natural fabrics (cotton, linen, silk, rayon, etc). Work with two of our favorite instructors to create a colorful collection of fabric samples as a palette for future creations, and delve deeper into the world of dyes. All levels welcome. Paige has worked in studios at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia as well as The Fabric Workshop. Without the proper equipment, sewing with knits can be frustrating to say the least. Our newly expanded department is excited to offer a class completely devoted to knits and stretch! During the class students will become familiar with our new sergers and coverstitch machine by making their own custom fit jersey t-shirt. Instruction will also cover sewing with a range of other knit materials, designing for knits and troubleshooting issues as they relate to projects. Sample material provided; students will provide material for their own projects. Prerequisite: First-Time Sewing or basic sewing experience. This class authorizes students to use advanced equipment for open studio use.

Learn how to operate a serger and master a sewing machine while completing at least one garment, either recreated from a favorite clothing item or following an existing pattern. 24 SPRING CLASSES BEGIN THE WEEKS OF APRIL 1 & MAY 6

( 2 DAYS ) 100 Acts of Sewing is the project of fiber artist Sonya Philip. This personal challenge to sew one hundred dresses in a year, also aims to reacquaint people with the skills required to make clothing. Learn to sew your own dress in this special two day workshop at Lillstreet Art Center. Students will learn to make a classic sleeveless dress that is extremely wearable with a flattering A-line silhouette. The neck and armholes are finished with a simple bias tape facing, and pockets add both flair and utility. The first day of the workshop kicks off with a slideshow and talk about the project, followed by a field trip to The Needle Shop, where Sonya will help guide students in fabric choices and mixing colors and patterns. On the second day sewers will learn how to cut pattern pieces, finish seams, make bias tape, and top stitch patch pockets. The pattern, available in six sizes, will be provided to trace and take home. This is not a beginning sewing class, you will need to have some basic experience with a sewing machine. Good lighting is often the difference between an average photograph and a great one. Serious photographers like to control their light in a professional studio. This course will teach you the basic concepts of studio lighting design, and give you hands-on instruction with hot lights, strobes, soft boxes, colored gels, and reflectors. Students will light their own portraits and table top set-ups.

Who says you need an expensive DSLR camera to make art? Toy cameras are serious tools in the hands of the fine art photographer. Plastic cameras like the Diana, Holga, and many others have been rediscovered by photography artists and can produce beautiful, mysterious images. This course will show you various cameras you can usually find for under $30, how to get stunning results from them, and how to work digitally from the images they produce. Students will need to purchase film and pay for film processing.

Chicago is a city of architectural treasures, but those buildings aren’t always easy to photograph. In this course you’ll learn the secrets to making dynamic photographs of buildings. Classes will cover shooting techniques during on-location meetings. You’ll photograph and learn about some outstanding architecture. Learn how to make stunning, luminous photographs when it’s dark out. You will be amazed at how the night can come alive through your camera with the proper techniques. Photographers, like painters and sculptors, have long worked with the nude as a subject. VIEW CAMERA AND LARGE ADVANCED DIGITAL FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTOGRAPHY ( 10 WEEKS ) World famous art photographers like Andreas Gursky, Edward Burtynski, Sally Mann, and Ansel Adams all have used view cameras to get exceptionally sharp images. This class will teach students the essentials of working with Photoshop. We’ll start by learning the workspace and all the tools, including brushes, paint, and flow. Next we’ll edit imagery on screen with adjustments such as levels, curves, hue/saturation, and how to selectively apply those adjustments. We’ll composite different image elements together. And we’ll conclude with a lesson on printing. Students should bring a flash drive with 5-10 images to edit. Basic computer skills required.

Learn the traditional art of Asian sumi-e ink painting, and the symbolism behind it. Experiment with basic sumi-e brush strokes and create small paintings, then take your new brush stroke skills and apply them to silk to create your very own painted silk scarf.

Each student will be guided through experimental and expressive painting techniques with a wide variety of tools, colors, textures, and mediums. We will find unexpected imagery and beauty as we create without selfjudgment or preoccupation with the end result. Each student should bring photocopies of images that have a personal meaning: places, animals, maps, etc. We will be altering the images and using them in collages, so please do bring copies rather than originals.

SUPERHEROES With great artistic talent comes great creation. The world needs new superheroes, and in this class you can learn how to create them. You don’t have a moment to lose as you pick the mask, cape, vehicle, powers and origin of the latest, greatest adventurer of them all: yours. Working with a professional illustrator, you will learn proportion, perspective, and foreshortening so you’ll know how your character looks from the side, back, and even a bird’s eye view. ECO-ART CAMP Venture outside and explore the natural world! We’ll observe nature with magnifying glasses

AGES 10-14 A WORLD IN A BOX: JOSEPH CORNELL Learn about and take inspiration from Joseph Cornell’s boxes and games made from found objects and collaged images. Cornell’s boxes were narratives of magical worlds, others were games, and others still were simply assemblages of interesting objects, clippings, and art materials. In this camp, we would visit the Art Institute to see and study the art of Joseph Cornell, and then make our own Cornell boxes. The students would design a concept, find and make objects for inside of the box, decorate the outside of the box, and emerge with their own interpretations of Cornell’s fun and interesting style. SEWING 101

GARDEN PLANTERS AND GROWING SCULPTURES We’ll create sculptural planters using hand-building techniques with terracotta clay. Make a sculpture that can grow grass for hair, or a beard of hanging vines! Plant your seeds and the clay sculptures will keep changing once the plants take on a life of their own.

Do you have visions of sewing your own clothes or being a fashionista? Maybe you want to learn how to use a sewing

machine to alter or fix some of your clothes already hanging in your closet? Campers will start from the beginning, mastering the basics of the sewing machine by learning different stitches and seams. You’ll get to design and create your own bag and apron! SCREENPRINTED SCHOOL CLOTHES Make personalized tshirts, bags, or iron-on patches with your very own printed designs! LILLSTREET LOFT IS LOCATED JUST A FEW STEPS NORTH OF THE ART CENTER AT 4437 N. RAVENSWOOD AVE. THE 2,000-SQFT VENUE IS HOME TO OUR ARTSBASED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IGNITE, AS WELL AS SEVERAL PUBLIC ARTS PROGRAMS. THE LOFT IS ALSO AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE RENTALS FOR UP TO 100 PEOPLE.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS Be a part of the Lillstreet Community by becoming a member today. You will join a supportive and friendly art community and have access to all the great benefits listed below:

OFFICE & GALLERY HOURS:

MONDAY-THURSDAY: 10AM-7:30 PM FRIDAY & SATURDAY: 10AM-6PM SUNDAY: 10AM-5PM REGISTER EARLY! CLASSES FILL QUICKLY. We strongly encourage you to preregister to ensure a space in class. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. Workshops must be paid in full at time of registration. Balance is due on the first day of class. Lillstreet accepts payments by VISA, Master Card, American Express or Discover. Checks should be made payable to Lillstreet Art Center.

Artist Membership: $40/year • Discounts on classes and workshops • VIP membership card • Discounts at participating art supply stores and other community services • Invitations to exciting and unique workshops and events

HOLIDAYS AND MISSED CLASSES For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from Lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

Please note that the membership discounts only apply to the person or people whose names are on the membership card.

REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

We are located on the northeast corner of Montrose and Ravenswood. Public Transportation: Take the CTA Brown Line to Montrose, or use Montrose Bus #78. The Metra Union Pacific North line Ravenswood stop is located four blocks north of Lillstreet. By Car: We are three blocks west of Ashland and four blocks east of Damen. CUSTOM CLASSES, CORPORATE EVENTS, AND PRIVATE PARTIES

Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. “ART & THE URBAN GARDEN” OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY, MAY 3, 6-8PM Artists who work with a range of materials come together to provide inspiration to gardening enthusiasts and art lovers alike.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 7PM Alex Chitty’s work sits ambiguously between digital and traditional, between drawing and sculpture. Chitty often incorporates humor into a conceptual sculptural practice.
