5 simple facts

you need to know in order to successfully start your journey to a healthier you New Year means resolutions to many of us. Weight loss is an extremely popular New Year’s resolution; along with “exercise more” “eat better” and “spend less money.” The sad fact is that most people don’t stick to these resolutions for more than three months and by the end of March, a third of those who have made resolutions will have let them lapse, and by mid Year more than half will be forgotten.

2. Kick out Sugar from your diet once and for all It is no secret that sugar contributes to weight gain and is the number one cause of obesity in the society today. Here are some of the names used on labels that refer to sugar. Corn Sweetener, Corn Syrup, or corn syrup solids, Dehydrated Cane Juice, Dextrin, Dextrose, Fructose, Fruit Juice Concentrate, Glucose, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Lactose, Maltodextrin, Malt syrup, Maltose, Raw sugar, Rice Syrup, Saccharose, Sucrose, Syrup, Treacle, Turbinado Sugar, Xylose. They should all be avoided.

Most of us know what we want in terms of adopting a healthy lifestyle but don’t know where to start. We want a vibrant life, consistent and heightened energy levels and a toned fit body. Consider the fact that no one fingerprint is alike. It’s amazing to think no one in the entire world will ever share your same fingerprint. Your fingerprint is your identification, your unique marking, and your signature. Just as your fingerprint is one of a kind, so is the rest of you. We have to learn our bodies by trying out different healthy foods so that we know what foods serve our bodies better. For example, how do you feel after eating certain foods? Do you feel alert, vibrant, and full of energy—or do you feel sluggish, bloated, and sleepy.

Sugar is also extremely addictive- It brings about feelings of highs and lows in the body similar to what drugs do and the negative side effects are just as bad as drugs, if not worse. You will find sugar in juices, sodas, cereals, bread, pastas, rice, starches and alcohol. Good news is that for those of us looking for a lean, strong and well-defined body, once you stop taking/eating sugar, your addiction quickly disappears! You realize that if you are on sugar, you are always craving it. When you start limiting your intake of these sugar-containing products, you see a drastic and immediate change in your weight. It’s not easy but the results are worth it!

Some people do better and feel better with more carbohydrates while others function better with more protein. Again, listen to your body; it will communicate by how you feel and what foods work best for you. Here is an interesting fact that I have observed over the years with my clients and my own body; once your body heals (reverse lifestyle diseases and obesity) you are able to cope with more varieties of foods because your body is now strong and has developed buoyancy! How cool is that? Here are 5 simple facts you need to know in order to successfully start your journey to a healthier you. Just being aware of these facts will arm you with a wealth of knowledge and will be of great support when drafting your meal plans. 1. Set up your mind for success - it has been said that our emotions (behavior) flow from our thoughts. What many people don't realize is that the thoughts they think each day can affect their weight loss dramatically. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, see yourself in the healthy; beautiful body you've always dreamed of and believe it is possible for you. If you start by believing it is possible for you to be and feel healthy, then you have done 50% of the work! Now that is a great start my friend!

3. Let’s eat real food as opposed to processed food. Real foods - foods in their natural state (whole). They contain all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and all the great nutrients that help our bodies to function well. We need to eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, water (best source of minerals) grass fed lean meats, pastured chicken and eggs, wild caught fish, raw nuts and seeds and plant based foods. Here is how I look at processed foods- Any food that contains too many ingredients on a label and most of them cannot be pronounced. Please grab your favorite cereal and check the ingredient list. If you find that you cannot pronounce some of the ingredients (reminds of chemistry class) then it’s time to ditch it! These are all chemicals and your body reads/treats them as toxins. You are giving your liver such a hard job in getting rid of these toxins. If you are constantly on processed foods, your liver can become overwhelmed. Remember your liver also helps you burn body fat so if it is kept busy cleaning out toxins, it has no time to get rid of your unwanted fat! This fact alone should direct you to re-stock your kitchen cabinets and pantry with real food today. Ensure you eat regularly (no skipping meals) and ensure it is a balanced diet. Your food should contain all the nutrients. Most important to note is that your meals should have protein. Protein not only fuels your muscles, it also helps stabilize your blood sugar and prevents hunger. So you get the benefit of lean, toned muscles and a great way to not be hungry. 4. Sleep- this is one tops my list lately. We have been misled over the years that the less sleep you get the more productive you become…time to burst this myth. It’s a high time we redefined success, as it is no longer sustainable. Some of us still define success as working the longest hours without taking any breaks or vacations, sleeping less, responding to emails at midnight or 5am in the morning- in essence the people suffering the most! We are toppling over from being too busy and poor sleeping habits. Our well being has to be included in the success equation now! ......continues

Sleep can contribute to weight gain, and it's also associated with a lot of lifestyle diseases like depression, heart disease plus many others. Research shows that sleep deprivation lowers not just our attention span, focus and memory; it also affects our emotional intelligence, self-esteem and empathy towards others. Getting eight hours of sleep is vital to optimal health. Here are some great tips for a better sleep… 1. Avoid electronics (phones, laptops, TV) 30-45 mins before bedtime- ensure you don’t take any device with you to your bedroom. 2. Do some light stretches and deep breathing exercises to help your body and mind transition to sleep- there are many Apps that can guide you to meditate. 3. Avoid caffeine from afternoon- keeps you awake at night 4. Gratitude diary- writes a list of what you are grateful for. I use an app called “gratitude grid” which reminds me at 9pm to fill in/ answer 10 gratitude questions. 5. Exercise - Your body needs you to get on a regular exercise routine. Remember nutrition combined with regular exercise is a guaranteed win. Exercise makes your muscles more sensitive to insulin so you will not require as much. Less insulin in the body means less inflammation and less body fat especially the belly fat! A great tip is to get into a routine that you can sustain, so that it doesn’t feel like work. If it feels like work, you will end up quitting. If you love to walk or skip that’s fine. You will need to do this daily for about 45 mins. I always encourage my clients to combine cardio with weights so that you have a well-toned and strong body. If you can get to high intensity training then all you need is 20 mins max. Be sure to get guidance from a gym coach if you are not sure. Whichever way, get moving! Here is to a healthier and happier YOU!

SOKO MKONONI PORTAL LAUNCHING

V4Y Uganda

V4Y Arusha

Vision for Youth, a non-profit organization run locally by Tanzanians to promote and lead approaches that provide sustainable livelihoods to young people by ensuring access and equity to building capacities and hands-on interventions.

This project has gone further to develop an online functional portal; Soko Mkononi Portal is designed to assist with dissemination of market and investment information to small and medium enterprise in East Africa especially in Tanzania and Uganda.

Vision for Youth wants to equip Tanzanians and the rest of the EAC with tools that will allow them to work hard and achieve financial gain. Youth are becoming increasingly motivated to take control of their own futures and the greatest opportunity to achieve success is through their own self-determination.

It aims to give access to buyers, sellers and investors within the East African region to find and search for goods and services in the market.

The portal will bridge the gap between policy and product and provide Ugandans and Tanzanians with market information and resources to move their products across the borders creating access for good retrieval and income generation. The portal will allow for the continued growth and support of the East African Community through the support of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and their ability to move goods. There was a need by consumers to have a tool that would access information and provide the opportunity for market innovation. The portal will help to smooth out border processes and provide sellers and consumers with details about transporting goods across borders in order to satisfy needs. The application aims to simplifying the transit process by providing information directly where users need it, through the application and through smart phones.

It also has an offline SMS system in order to reach users that don’t have access to the internet; a mobile phone application system that will provide easy and practical access to market and investment opportunities for SME’s in Uganda and Tanzania. Also will provide a social accountability Platform for SMS’s to share difficulties that are faced by young entrepreneurs, farmers, women and men in business and suggest solutions. So far Vision for Youth has launched the project and the portal in Tanzania and Uganda. Implementing partner: Women and Development Association (WEGCDA). Funded by GIZ; under IIDEA program.

ASPA na ustawi wa Punda

Agriculture

is Passionate about Valentine's Day When you treat your beloved one to candy, flowers or dinner out at their favorite restaurant, you are not only sending a message of caring to your loved one, but also to farmers. Consider the box of chocolates you buy is a farm product using ingredients of milk, nuts, fruits, sweeteners and other farm commodities. Agriculture’s input to Valentine’s Day does not only end at the candy counter, dinner table or Walk in the Park the list is endless. Have in mind that, even when you purchase a dozen of roses, those same roses were raised by farmers.

We celebrate Valentine’s Day by attending food festivals, visiting farms and wineries, planting gardens, and watching our favorite cooking shows on television. It also plays a valuable role in our everyday lives by not only providing us with food, but also by maintaining a strong economy. On a worldwide basis, more people are in some way involved in agriculture than in all other occupations combined. Agriculture is Africa’s largest industry; employing more than 50 million people than other related jobs.

In the past century, there have been tremendous changes in Africa’s agriculture. Farmers have become extremely efficient and have taken advantage of newer technologies. As a result, they are producing a wider variety of crops and producing them more efficiently. Whether you support your declaration of love with candy, flowers, wine or a nice dinner, you are also supporting farmers and the much larger number of people employed by agriculture. Last but not least consider the number of additional people employed in the wholesale and retail distribution and sale of these products, the truck drivers, storage and warehouse workers, supermarket and store employees, waiters, dishwashers, you will agree with me that “YES”Agriculture is passionate about Valentine’s Day.

The benefits of agriculture are experienced on our every day –To-day life. Agriculture is not just an industry; it is the foundation of our civilization. Agriculture provides the basic essentials for living: the food we eat, the beverages we drink, the clothing we wear, and the materials for our homes. Without agriculture, we would have none of these. Agriculture also provides us with many of our traditions and values. Jan & Feb, 2017
