Article 08 | Agricultural Entrepreneurship

Agricultural Entrepreneurship:

By Farmers Trend – Kenya Do you know that Agricultural businesses are the most lucrative businesses in the world? Profitable Agribusiness Ideas for a Willing Entrepreneur in Kenya Unemployment has been the major trending challenge over the last three decades and has continued to generate heated debates in the country. Urban employment problems are a result of the phenomenal growth in urbanization and the inability of these urban centers to utilize or absorb the urban labor that was created through the process of urbanization. This rural – urban migration continues to balloon by the day with no controls hence resulting into high rate of urban employment in Kenya which remains to be a thorn in flesh greatly hurting the country’s economy. The irony is that most educated Kenyan youths go around looking for jobs the country’s urban centers not realizing that the best way to eliminate unemployment is through creating jobs. Considering the fact that Kenya’s economy is agriculture based, Agribusiness could be the perfect path to wealth and job creation for the youth in the country. This could be the best possible solution to deliver Kenya’s youths from economic despondency should they choose to embrace it instead of considering it as a dirty job reserved for the village poor folks. Looking at it from a positive angle, you will realize that: - Agricultural businesses have the potential to give one a high turn with profits of up to 100% - There is a great possibility of low start up and running costs for the business. - Agricultural businesses can be started with little or no training. You do not need a special degree to start. However, you may need to spend some time learning about the intricacies of the business since agribusiness requires that you be very creative. You need to carefully look at a product that you want to produce as a business-attracting product, just like any other product manufactured from industries. This means that you should produce what you are sure can fill an existing market gap. Below are some of the best and most profitable Agribusiness ideas practicable in Kenya ranging from commercial farming of livestock, vegetables, poultry, etc doable at small, medium and large-scale levels? 1.AGRICULTURAL CONSULTING SERVICES There is a rising demand for agricultural consulting services. having knowledge and experience in the field can start providing consulting services to farmers and institutions seeking to invest in agriculture. You can step into the gap of financial services if you have some cash by giving agricultural loans to farmers at a decent interest. Banks and financial institutions don’t like giving loans to small scale farmers. 2. BEE KEEPING The cost of starting a bee keeping business is relatively low while it yields very high returns. You can start a bee keeping business with as low as 3,000 by constructing langstroth bee hives from your local carpenter. Perch them in areas conducive for bees to access and after four months you will be ready to harvest. Other things you may need are veils, bee suits and smokers.

3. DAIRY FARMING One of the most common forms of agribusiness which one cannot reasonably dispute as capable of raking in huge profits for your enterprise is Dairy Farming. With a litre of milk now costing just over 60 shillings, the necessity of milk in any household cannot be gainsaid; furthermore numerous studies have been keen to suggest that on average over 30 million Kenyans take at least one cup of milk tea per day. Add to that the fact that processing of milk into milk byproducts broadens the market scope making it yours for the taking. You can start making your own dairy products like milk, cheese and butter for sale. However, you will need a detailed business plan and a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) of your plan and the resources you have available will be critical to the success of your business. As a beginner, you have to try your possible best to keep cost at its lowest minimum. For example, you can make use of family labor. Talk to the people around you to help you work the farm, if you can. This is because the fewer people on the payroll at first, the better. Try and keep costs as low as possible.

4. FERTILIZER DISTRIBUTION Fertilizer distribution process is mostly controlled by the government. In fact, it is one of the most profitable agribusiness ideas which can be done with minimum investment. You can help deliver fertilizers to farmers in remote locations. 5. FODDER PRODUCTION Fodder is any agricultural foodstuff, used to feed livestock’s like chicken, pigs, goats and horses. There are several types of fodder, for example seaweed, bone meal, molasses, green maize etc. Fodder can be cultivated to feed livestock 4. HATCHERY Another very good business for young entrepreneurs is starting a hatchery for eggs and selling day-old chicks to poultry farmers. It is a highly profitable business and your return on investment is very quick. The poultry industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. You can start with very little money and you can start generating an income within 3 weeks from starting. 7. HOUSE CONSTRUCTION FOR LIVESTOCK KEEPING Constructing poultry and rabbit houses, dairy farming cubicles, goat and sheep rearing shades and other such farming structures for use by farmers to rear their livestock. 8. VEGETABLE FARMING Many vegetables in the market offer high returns within just three (3) months of planting. Cabbages, Capsicums, Carrots, Egg plant, Hot chili, Onions, Sukumawiki, Tomatoes, are just a few examples of vegetables that can generate you a lot of income in a short period of time. More especially if you have water and even simple irrigation equipment, which will help you in growing them even during the drought/dry season.

A Look into ORGARNIC FARMING Organic farming is a method of farming system which primarily aims at cultivating the land and raising crops in such a way that keeps the soil alive and in good health by use of organic wastes (crop, aquatic, animal and farm wastes) and other biological materials along with beneficial microbes (bio fertilizers) to release nutrients to crops for increased sustainable production in an eco friendly pollution free environment. This type of farming maximally relies upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, off-farm organic waste, mineral grade rock additives and biological system of nutrient mobilization and plant protection. The World Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) states that “Organic agriculture is a holistic production management system which promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity, and this is accomplished by using on-farm agronomic, biological and mechanical methods in exclusion of all synthetic off-farm inputs. It takes into account the regional conditions that require locally adapted systems.” Need of organic farming With the increase in population our compulsion would be not only to stabilize agricultural production but to increase it further in sustainable manner. Thus, a natural balance needs to be maintained at all cost for existence of life and property. The key characteristics of organic farming include • Protecting the long term fertility of soils by maintaining organic matter levels, encouraging soil biological activity, and careful mechanical intervention • Providing crop nutrients indirectly using relatively insoluble nutrient sources which are made available to the plant by the action of soil micro-organisms • Nitrogen self-sufficiency through the use of legumes and biological nitrogen fixation, as well as effective recycling of organic materials including crop residues and livestock manures • Weed, disease and pest control relying primarily on crop rotations, natural predators, diversity, organic manuring, resistant varieties and limited (preferably minimal) thermal, biological and chemical intervention 08.

• The extensive management of livestock, paying full regard to their evolutionary adaptations, behavioral needs and animal welfare issues with respect to nutrition, housing, health, breeding and rearing • Careful attention to the impact of the farming system on the wider environment and the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats Benefits of Organic Fertilizer: Promotes the growth of plant roots, stems and leaves. • Improves the quality and flavor of the harvestable parts of crops significantly. • Enhances the drought resistance, infertility resistance, diseases and insect pests resistance of plants. • Helps the seeds germinate faster and stronger. • It is versatile: It can be use for any plant or crop. • It increase yield; this is what farmers really want. • It prevent pest; this will help farmers reduce cost of pesticide and herbicide. • It is non toxic and non caustic.es soil structure and enhances the bioactivity of the soil. Important of non toxic fertilizer (organic) Low Capital Investment: In addition to the on-farm production possibilities of organic fertilizers, organic fertilizers help in maintaining the soil structure and increasing its nutrient-holding capacity. Fertility of Soil: Organic fertilizers ensure that the farms remain fertile for hundreds of years. Land located at the site of ancient civilizations, such as India and China, are still fertile, even though agriculture has been practiced there for thousands of years. The fertility is maintained because organic fertilizers were always used Safe Environment: Organic fertilizers are easily bio-degradable and do not cause environmental pollution or any arm to d internal or external environment On the other hand, chemical fertilizers contaminate both the land and water, which is a major cause of diseases for human beings and is the force behind the extinction of a number of plant.
