Marketing Tips by: Jennifer Ayoti

Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates delivers a lecture (Picture)

Are you a Career Marketer, Accountant, business person or any other professional and wondering how to give back to the community through your profession? Well, there is one noble way…Become a Teacher. Yes be a part time Lecturer/ Tutor in your local college or university. Although you will earn money from teaching, being a teacher is more than just the paycheck. It’s about constantly challenging your brain, crazy but exciting schedules, inspiring students and most importantly intangible rewards. I have been a part-time CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) lecturer and Part-time trainer since the year 2006 and it’s the most amazing experience ever. I have not only earned friendships, improved my planning, but my students have kept me young as they have compelled me to constantly smile through even the most frustrating moments. Haven’t I created a desire in you to give back to your community through your profession today? Say Yes! Here is the first step… The great question: Step 1- What are you truly passionate about? Is it Accounting, Health, Nursing, Marketing? Decide and focus on only one. Do not think about what you are not good at, this only attracts negatives and derails you. Be specific. For example, I have great experience in Marketing as well as Wellness. I chose to teach marketing on part-time basis because I am passionate about it. I serve as a nutritionist on full time basis so I get to enjoy my wellness passion as well. You will need to pray about it and trust your intuition. One of my mentors says that when you pray, you are speaking to God; Your Intuition is God speaking to you. Listen to it and you will never regret. Step 2- Find out which learning institution is close to you. Remember as a career person, you are occupied the entire day and can only teach in the evenings or during the weekends.

The institution must be located closer to your work place or home. Location is an important decision as it will encourage you to serve willingly. Step 3- Act now! Go for it. Do not delay your decision. You will never regret it Here is what you are about to experience… Proper planning and discipline - You will have to make notes, read extensively so that you are conversant with the topic. Mark exams, continuous assessments, make follow ups etc. This is a huge commitment as you are already engaged at work. Teaching enables you to create a balance in life. How awesome. Why plan? I once had a student who asked me a PR question (He was in the PR field) that was not covered in the syllabus and I couldn’t answer. If I had planned and read extensively on the PR topic, maybe I would have answered him irrespective of the topic not being in the syllabus. I did however admit to him that I was not well versed with the topic and asked him to explain to the class, which he gladly did (He was clearly testing me) Feeling energized - One thing I can guarantee you is that you will never be bored! Why? Because your brain is constantly engaged in creative ways as you work to resolve many problems that you have never faced before. Teaching gives you an opportunity to learn and evolve everyday!

There are many jokes that come out of it as well; sometimes having a sense of humour is what can keep you moving forward. Intangible rewards - It has been said that teaching is the only profession that gives you job security simply because the world will always need teachers- especially if you have earned your credentials…You have a job you can count on for decades to come. Beyond the job security, I would like to highlight the gigantic reward- Changing lives! If you decide to take up teaching part-time or full time, please go beyond books. Teach your students life skills. In the beginning of the term, this is the question I ask my students; -Have you set your goals- Personal, work, financial and spiritual? -Are they written down? -Do you read them every day? -If you have achieved your goal, do you celebrate? One of my Rwandese student’s goals was to open up a pizza restaurant in Kigali. I ask her often how she is fairing on and we get to assess the progress together.

Unique Personality - The greatest asset you bring to the classroom each time is your unique personality. Teachers are gifted as they have a chance to inspire, lead and motivate students.

We all have different personalities so I am sure you may chose to do it differently. I believe the “how” doesn’t really matter, what is important is the “if” we are doing it. Inspire and mold their young impressionable minds through your expertise and experience and they will remember you for it; but above all, you will have an opportunity to watch them grow and succeed…this is the greatest reward of all.

I run my classes in a very unique way. I start by asking each student to share what observations they have made that week- Politics, foreign exchange, mergers, branding, new entrants, adverts etc… This way, every student gets to speak and it creates a great environment for learning.

Teaching gives you an opportunity to maintain the apprentice thinking because the moment you think you know too much or are a master in your field, you are a beginner! I do hope that this article has inspired you to give back to your community by teaching in your local college or university. Act now…!

THE IMPORTANCE OF AMINO ACIDS IN POULTRY PRODUCTION Amino acids are organic compounds made up of amines (NH2) and carboxylic acid (COOH) functional groups. They act as building blocks for proteins and as metabolic intermediates. Additionally, they aid in the development, repair, and maintenance of body tissues. Though poultry birds can produce some amino acids, they require groups of other essential amino acids that can only be obtained by consuming feed that is rich in them. Below is a table showing both essential and non-essential amino acids:

The feed industry relies on crude protein sources found in raw materials such as fish meal (dagaa), blood meal and soya beans. However, crude protein inconsistencies cannot be avoided. Every raw material put into your compound feed formulation affects the bottom line since the available raw materials vary in their crude protein content. Using supplemental amino acids is a good way of ensuring consistent feed quality, while delivering the same performance and at the least cost, as compared to other sources of crude protein. Amino acids are chiral (except Glycine). This means that different forms with exactly the same chemical structure exist. For example one can have L-Lysine or DL-Methionine. Poultry can only use L amino acids, although conversion in the body is 100% effective for DL-Methionine, with a two-step enzymatic process (oxidative deamination followed by transamination). The following are the crucial amino acids in poultry production:1. DL – Methionine (MetAMINO®) Methionine is one of the most important amino acids in livestock nutrition. It is the first limiting amino acid in poultry, and the second in pigs. A deficiency in Methionine limits growth, and performance in egg production for poultry. A difference in biological efficacy between Methionine sources can lead to a difference in performance parameters such as weight gain, feed conversion rate and breast meat yield. MetAMINO® (ex.Evonik Industries) is the most commonly used methionine in poultry. It can be added in premixes, mineral supplements and compounded feeds at an inclusion rate of 500g/MT of feed. Its technical properties allow homogeneous mixing and stability against segregation.

The proper use of BioLys® in animal feeds reduces costs by 3-8% over other forms of lysine such as Lysine-HCL. It has also been proven more effective than other sources of Lysine because it contains Bio-Mass, which is a by-product of the fermentation process for Lysine, hence the term BioLys. It is mixed in compound feeds at an inclusion rate of 1.2KG/MT of feed. Its technical properties allow for homogeneous mixing and stability against segregation. Its thermos-stability allows for it to be used in the manufacture of compound feeds without degradation even when exposed to high temperatures such as those found in pellet mills. 3. Threonine (ThreAMINO®) Threonine is the third limiting amino acid in poultry production. It facilitates balancing of the amino acid dietary profile especially for an optimum ratio between Lysine and Methionine. Apart from being an essential amino acids Threonine plays an important role in maintenance requirements, feather synthesis, gut health, and the immune system in poultry. ThreAMINO® (ex.Evonik Industries) contain L-Threonine which is mixed in compound feed at an inclusion rate of 1KG/MT of feed. Its technical properties allow for homogeneous mixing and stability against segregation. Its thermos-stability allows for it to be used in the manufacture of compound feeds without degradation even when exposed to high temperatures such as those found in pellet mills. 4. Tryptophan (TrypAMINO®) This is essential amino acid especially in low protein poultry feeds, with high contents of grains that may be deficient in this amino acid. An optimal tryptophan content enhances optimal feed intake, weight gain, and poultry performance particularly in the starter phase of poultry production. TrypAMINO (ex.Evonik Industries) contains Tryptophan and can be added in a compounded feed at an inclusion rate of 1KG/MT of feed. Its technical properties allow for homogeneous mixing and stability against segregation. Its thermos-stability allows for it to be used in the manufacture of compound feeds without degradation even when exposed to high temperatures such as those found in pellet mills. 5. Creatine - Guanidinoacetic Acid (CreAMINO®) Although not listed as an essential amino acids, guanidinoacetic acid is an amino acid derivative and a natural precursor of Creatine. Creatine plays a vital role in energy metabolism particularly in muscle cells. Creatine is synthesized from guanidinoacetic acid in the liver, which in turn is synthesized from glycine and arginine in the kidney. CreAMINO (ex.Evonik Industries) contains guanidinoacetic acid, a precursor of creatine This is the only supplemental creatine source for broiler nutrition. It plays a critical role in energy metabolism and it is necessary for efficient growth of broilers. It is also increase hatchability in breeder flocks. It can be added in a compounded poultry feed at an inclusion rate of 40g/MT of feed. Its technical properties allow for homogeneous mixing and stability against segregation. Its thermos-stability allows for it to be used in the manufacture of compound feeds without degradation even when exposed to high temperatures such as those found in pellet mills.

Its thermos-stability allows for it to be used in the manufacture of compound feeds without degradation even when exposed to high temperatures such as those found in pellet mills. 2. L-Lysine (BioLys®) Lysine is the second limiting amino acid in poultry and the first in pigs. It ensures optimal feed digestibility and utilization, increased growth rate and an improved meat quality. BioLys® (ex.Evonik Industries) is the original Lysine sulfate improved over years of fermentation and animal nutrition research.
