sprinter James Ellington has achieved more than most people can dream of in an entire lifetime. Having represented Great Britain at this year’s World Championships in South Korea, and helping the Great British team to victory in the 4x100 metres sprint relay at this year’s European Team Championships. This is a young man with his eyes set firmly on the prize; competing on his own turf at the 2012 London Olympics. What first got you interested in running? I was three years old watching the 1988 Seoul Olympics on TV. Obviously we had Linford Christie at the time, one of the fastest men in the world, and I think it attracted me from there. When did you realise you were fast? At infant school. Every year we’d have a sports day and I’d win the sprint races. I was winning and I enjoyed the winning and that was what made me take up athletics professionally. Where does your inner confidence come from? I think to be a top level athlete you have to have a bit of confidence. Just knowing your ability, obviously not being arrogant or cocky, just knowing what you can achieve. So I think I am confident within my ability. If I didn’t have confidence to take myself to the top then I probably would have stopped a long time ago.

Catch me if you can

WORDS: GILLIAN FISHER

What difference has your coach John Powell made to you? A coach is more than just a coach; he’s like a mentor as well. Apart from my family and parents he’s probably one of the biggest people in my life ’cos I’ve been training with him since I was 13 and I’m 26 now so he’s been there for just over half my life. He’s contributed a lot to all my athletics.

You have quite a rigorous training regime don’t you? Yeah, it’s six days a week training, twice a day on some days. It’s tough trying to find the time to fit all around each other, the only day I get off is Saturday. You once mentioned that most of your friends who grew up with you in Bellingham have gotten into crime and spent time in prison. What stopped you getting into that lifestyle? (Instantly) Running. I started training down here when I was thirteen years old. That was probably the age where I was most likely to start getting into trouble so thankfully training in athletics and running part time kept me out of trouble which is a good thing. You also work with young people. What does that involve? I work for a scheme called Met-Track. It’s like a coaching slash mentoring youth programme at the athletics track and I go into a few schools as well. Basically I show them what I was shown as a thirteen year old, and try and push

them to get into athletics if they’re interested. Obviously it’s all for fun. It keeps them occupied during the day when they could be out doing anti- social behaviour or something different.

Tell me about a New Year’s Eve experience of yours. I don’t normally go out for New Year ’cos it’s such a hassle but about five years ago I decided to go all out and me and a few of my mates bought tickets for a big formal ball up in Shepherds Bush, and the tickets were £120. So we turned up to a big massive club and within ten minutes the staff said there was a fire but no one could see it. So we all got thrown out about after fifteen minutes and never got a refund so I think

it was all a big scam. By midnight we were running through Trafalgar Square trying to find somewhere to celebrate.

What’s your biggest dream? At the moment my biggest dream is probably my goal for next year, which is making the Olympic team first and foremost. Obviously my ultimate dream for next year would be to make the final and get a medal. Realistically, probably our biggest chance of a medal next year would be in the relay. Obviously to get a medal in the 100metres you’re going against men like Usain Bolt, Tyson Gaye, some of the fastest men in history so realistically it’s a far way off, but anything can happen. Tebbs Second Chances in Gambia I

WORDS: FIONA LUKE

t’s always been my desire to do the Tebbs SC project in the Gambia. Some of my reasons may be out of sentiment, some are from moving forward with the Tebbs SC vision and some are from the “can I do it?” factor. So three years ago when Tebbs SC was birthed, I approached Pastor Emmanuel Swaray from Pneuma Ministries in the Gambia to help me out, but as soon as the words came out of my mouth the nerves kicked it. So I stalled and stalled and stalled until 2010 when I

had to allow God to take control and just do his will. It hasn’t been easy though, from day one there have been obstacles which left me wondering whether the decision was the right one or not. With the current economic climate, the flow of stationery donations during our collection period was very slow and the amount of stationery actually collected was very limited. This meant that I personally had to buy lots of stationery items to bridge the gap. However God blessed me and kept my mind at peace, constantly

reassuring me that he will provide. For example we received a donation of old printer cartridges, which I sold on eBay and the proceeds went towards shipping costs and clearing and handling costs in the Gambia. At the beginning of October, Denise Simon and Sophia Briggs came to my house to help me

catalogue all the reading books and stationery items ready for shipping … this was Sophia’s first time helping with this stage of the project and I think she was shocked to see the work load! A week later, I was off to the shipping company with seven giant boxes. I was very relieved when everything was boxed up and ready to go. So, with the entire shipment on its way to the Gambia with the possibility that it may not get there in time for the distribution looming, I pressed on. On Friday 4th November at 3.30am, I left my house to meet Sophia Briggs who was accompanying me on this trip, as we had arranged to make our way to the airport together. Our tour operator allowed us just 15kg in weight for our luggage ... now ladies you know how difficult it is to travel light! In addition to this, I had to carry crucial items for the distribution in my luggage as they

WORLD EVENTS were not delivered in time for the shipment. When I arrived at the airport, both my suitcase and hand luggage were overweight... but God’s favour got me through. We arrived in the Gambia at around 2pm and were picked up by the tour operator and taken to our hotel, the Senegambia Beach Hotel. After checking out our surroundings, we were met by Pastor Andrew Gomez, one of the three wonderful people who assisted us, the other two being Pastor Francis Mendy and Brother Lawrence Gomez. These three individuals were instrumental in ensuring the shipment was cleared before the start of the Tobaski holiday; a task that normally takes over a day was done in just 6 hours. Tobaski, Tobaski, Tobaski that’s all people were talking about. Tobaski is a Muslim holiday that is very big in the Gambia. Shops and schools were closed over the weekend until Tuesday 8th November.

On Monday 7th November our work began. We were picked up by Pastor Andrew and Brother Lawrence at around 10.30am and taken to the house of Martin and Rebecca Boakarie the lovely hosts of our stationery shipment. For the next four hours Sophia, eight others and me went to work sorting the stationery into individual plastic bags ready for distribution. We had planned the stationery distribution for Tuesday 8th November, but unfortunately because of Tobaski we had to postpone it until Wednesday 9th November. On Wednesday 9th November at 9.45am, both Sophia and I were picked up by Pastor Francis in a pickup truck and driven straight to the Boakarie house where the stationery was being stored. It took us over 30 minutes to load the truck. We arrived at the New Life

The kids were so happy to receive the gifts – some classes sang special songs for us.

Kanifing School at around 10.45am and the next two hours were a whirlwind of activity. We were met by the sponsorship director Sylvia Morgan and administrator James Ndomahina, both of whom were very surprised by our visit to the school. After a few photographs were taken, we visited individual classes introducing ourselves in both English and Wolof, then gave each child from nursery to grade six their individual stationery packs.

The kids were so happy to receive the gifts - some classes sang special songs for us. Unfortunately because of Tobaski, some of the children from Kanifing School were absent, so we were also able to bless children at the Buckingham Pneuma Academy and about 50 children in the village of Darsalami and Brufut, who are part of an outreach scheme run by Pneuma Ministries. I can truly say that I enjoyed the whole experience and am very glad that I could bring so much joy to so many children’s lives and that they brought so much joy to our lives too. I would like to thank Pastor Emmanuel, Pastor Andrew, Pastor Francis, Pastor Robert and Brother Lawrence for all their help and hospitality in the Gambia. Info: www.tebbssc.com LIME MAGAZINE 2011

at the modest age of 13, Tasha Dixon is a veteran in the hair and beauty industry. She has worked in some of Britain’s leading salons including Hibiscus Hair and Nail Studio, Vanessa Andar, Toni and Guy, Expressions InHair and Junior Green. As my natural hair was given a treatment Tasha Dixon and I chatted away like old buddies. This wasn’t any old salon experience; my chair massaged my back, my eyes feasted on the fabulous leopard print and sophisticated black décor. No corners have been cut in making this hairdressing boutique one of a kind. Well done on opening your hair salon – you must be so excited having worked from

home for so long. How does it feel to live the dream? It’s a blessing. I do have to pinch myself – especially as it’s in this area; Buckhurst Hill. We’re the only black business in the area too. Why did you choose Buckhurst Hill? [Lord Sugar drives past whilst I’m there] Buckhurst Hill chose me – it wasn’t the original plan but it’s a nice area. It’s affluent and there isn’t anything around here for black women although quite a few black women live here. Why did you decide to go for the more luxurious ‘boutique’ style when it came to deciding the type of salon you wanted to open?

As I’ve mainly worked on my own or from home I wasn’t sure where I fitted in, in this ocean of an industry. I wanted to do something that felt normal and comfortable to me. I wanted it to be personable – so that’s why I made it a boutique. What kind of setbacks occurred when you were setting up the business from home to salon? The initial transformation was easy. It’s when you want to elevate yourself and progress further is when doors get shut in your face. I knew the kind of area that I wanted to be: Snaresbrook, Woodford etc but estate agents would suggest I go to Ilford, Leytonstone or Stratford. I couldn’t even get viewings. I’ve

always lived in Essex so I’ve become thick skinned but I was quite scared to open up in Buckhurst Hill. A few weeks ago a friend of mine was in Loughton and this guy came up to her and said ‘this isn’t an area for black people’. I feel quite naïve in saying that I can’t believe that people still have that level of ignorance. However, since we opened the other businesses have been so welcoming and I’ve never known anything like it. I wasn’t sure how I would be received being the only black business in the area but people have been nice and I think it’s genuine. So do you do European hair also? Yeh, a lot of European women come in to get their weaves done and we also specialise in combination

Everyone thinks that relaxed hair is more damaging than natural hair but I’ve seen natural hair that’s in very bad condition too. It’s about knowing what’s best for your hair and looking after it. hair. The UK seems to be going through a natural hair revolution. What are your thoughts on this? I’ve just gone natural myself – I stopped relaxing my hair earlier this year As a hair stylist I believe people have to do what’s right from them. I have quite a few clients who have gone natural often because nothing else has worked for them. I also have quite a few clients who have come from being natural and have decided to go back to relaxer. Nowadays chemicals are a lot less harsh and also people are more interested in the education. Everyone thinks that relaxed hair is more damaging than natural hair but I’ve seen natural hair that’s in very bad condition too. It’s about knowing what’s best for your hair and looking after it. Tell us about your hair story – favourite styles you’ve rocked over the years; hair disaster stories etc? Oh my gosh; I’ve had it all. This time last year it was red. I’ve been short, including number one, which I’ve had before. But this time it was because

my hair fell out. I went to a very good friend’s salon - she’s still my friend [laughs]. It was her junior stylist who did my hair – she relaxed it but didn’t wash it out properly and it affected the whole of my hairline. I was so upset. I’d just spent the last two years growing my hair. Even though I’m a hairdresser it’s nice to go and get your hair done. So I just went to the barbers and just cut it off – it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. Luckily I’ve got the face so I can carry off most hairstyles, but I know short suits me. You were just 13-yearsold when you started out – it’s a bit young don’t you think? I loved hair and I wanted to get a job. So I got a job in a salon – I lied and said I was 16 but I think they were just looking for cheap labour. He paid me £10 for a whole day’s work of braiding. I did this every Saturday and sometimes Friday after school for about two years. But I loved it so it didn’t matter – I was learning. I don’t braid anymore – I hate it. I’m traumatised; I don’t even braid my own daughter’s hair. Which celebrity

hairstyles do you like? I want to make-over Kelly Rowland. Kelly is so beautiful she doesn’t need all of that hair and it’s just too ‘wiggy’. Let’s just bring it so it’s not so obvious. I’m loving Misha B’s hair too. I look at celebrities then I look at who is styling them. Unfortunately none of these people never really wear their own hair and I’m very much for your own hair.

everything. So what do you predict will be the hair trends

What are your favourite hair products and why? I like Philip Kingsley, Milkshake, Keracare – there are some Keracare products which I couldn’t live without but when it comes to styling products you need a bit of

TWO new Creme of Nature Products for you to try

The Creme of Nature Argan Oil range includes two products that are proving very popular. The nutrient-rich Oil Treatment is very affordable when compared to more expensive versions on the market, and can be found in good hair and beauty shops for £4.99. This precious, alcoholfree oil maximises hair strength and provides intense conditioning. It protects against breakage and repairs dry, damaged hair and absorbs instantly for long-lasting shine without an oil residue, while smoothing over the cuticle layer to reduce frizz, leaving hair silky soft. And perhaps one of the most anticipated products launched recently is the restorative Moisture & Shine Shampoo which retails at £3.20 for a 12oz bottle. Slaunch of upcoming oon we will see the

fashion styling website Fashion Never Sleeps. As it approaches, Lime Magazine caught up with the founder and freelance fashion stylist herself, Victorine Mengot. She spoke to us about how her fashion journey took off, who her ultimate AfricanCaribbean fashion icons are and what we can expect from her new venture. You’re known for working with numerous fashion publications, designers and retail outlets; tell us a bit about your title as a stylist and what it involves? Well day to day, when I’m not on a shoot or freelancing for a publication. I would be going to press appointments, store appointments and calling in outfits. Generally keeping myself updated with fashion online via emails, researching in magazines and the best part, travelling. What’s your earliest childhood memory in fashion? [Laughs] My earliest memory was at age 9; when I won the competition for best dressed peg doll at Brownies. From then on I knew I wanted to work in fashion. Who are your biggest fashion influences and in your opinion who is the greatest AfricanCaribbean fashion Icon? Just to name a few; I’d say Beverly Johnson, the first

African American to be on the front cover of American Vogue. Also Alek Wek changed the face of fashion for dark skinned models as well as Naomi Campbell. How did you start learning about fashion? I learnt about fashion and style through my mother, her knowledge and creativity always inspires me. I grew up with lots of stories and was shown pictures of what she used to wear in the 60s, 70s and 80s. All of that has come back around and it’s amazing dipping into her wardrobe! What item(s) have you bought for your wardrobe recently? I bought a Cotton Traders satchel bag from Oxfam £4.95!! BARGIN! I’ve always been in love with loafers especially this season. I got a pair from New Look in tan and black! Can you tell I’m a bit obsessed?

In your opinion what’s the must have look for autumn/winter? This season keep an eye out 70’s inspired AW wear! Chunky heels, big knits and layering. Also coats and outer wear are HUGE and loving all the different textures. So do you prefer High Street or Designer? Vintage! The launch of your company FNS is fast approaching, what can we expect? Fashion Never Sleeps is “Creating the image that fits you”. My main aim is to basically inspire all women that style is not fashion it comes from within. It’s also to provide them with daily updates in fashion on High Street, designer and Vintage. To find out more keep an eye out for the website. Aside from styling and working within the fashion industry, what

do you get up to? I love to travel, go to different places and see other cultures. If ever I get a quiet moment I enjoy reading a good book and enjoying good food with friends and family. Although 98 per cent of what I get up to is fashion orientated. What is the greatest lesson that 2011 has taught you? It has taught me to just dream, believe and achieve.

A lot of female emcees are starting to work hard, crack down, focus on their music. It’s good to see female emcees coming up

Words: Semper Azeez-Harris

Lbeen on the scene ady Leshurr has

for a while impressing multitudes of people with her bars and her verbal dexterity but life is evidently about time. Her new track Lego Lady Leshurr knocks on the music fraternity’s door stating clearly that she has done the waiting and is now in the right place to take the mantle as one of the hottest rappers male or female. Repping Birmingham to the fullest Lady Leshurr, it’s your time. What’s the state of the UK female emcee scene at the moment? I think it’s healthy at the moment; a lot of female emcees are starting to work hard, crack down, focus on their music. There’s a lot more that have come out as well now. It’s good to see female emcees coming up. You’ve been quiet for a bit

– your time was that needed as a period of time to reflect? No way! I’m never quiet that’s the thing I’ve always got so much to say. There’s so much happening now it’s not just about me doing mix tapes, I’m working on building my career, I’m working for hours on music in the studio. So I guess I’m focussing on that so perhaps that’s why I seem quieter. What was it like acting One Day a film that courted controversy? It was a good experience. It’s the first movie I’ve ever been in. I didn’t act as such; I was kind of just being me really! It was nice to meet the cast and the director and being in a different situation, it was a good experience. So Lego had Wizzy Wow on production how did this connection happen? Basically we got to

16 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

session with each other and he showed me a few tracks and one was the Lego instrumental and it really stood out for me. I just jumped in the booth and did my thing and it just went from there really. I didn’t think it would be my single just thought it might be for my album, but I’m glad it’s the one I came out with because it’s my kind of music and style. Your double time is harsh and you are getting comparisons to Busta but you famously mimicked a whole heap of artists. Who else can you do? Uhmm mimic wise I can do a lot of people’s accents and stuff! The last mix-tape I released had a lot of impersonations on it where I did my own little spin off. I did Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Busta - I can do a lot of people because I’m crazy like that! I just do it because I find it funny. Music is just about having fun.

Your EP Up the Leash, give me a flavour of what’s on there? That was released earlier on this year in August. It’s got four tracks on there it’s got a grime track. It’s energetic and it’s just me spitting fast and some spitting slow. It showcases my versatility really! You have your own label how is that going? It’s going well at the moment. We’re releasing Lego off there and see how it goes.

What’s in the pipeline for you in 2012? More mix-tapes, my album is due for release in March next year too. And lots more collaborations as well. All exciting stuff, I can’t wait! Info: www.ladyleshurr. com | Lady Leshurr’s EP Up the Leash is out now.

Heavy D

Lthe overweight lover ast month, Heavy D

of hip hop died. He was 44-years-old. He collapsed outside his Beverly Hills home on November 8 and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre where he later died. Heavy D was a pioneer of New Jack Swing and helped to develop the fusion of hip hop and r&b that is so common today.

He was born Dwight Arrington Myers in Jamaica on May 24, 1967. His mother Eulahlee Lee was a nurse and his father Clifford Myers was a machine technician. The family moved to Mount Vernon, New York in 1971. Heavy D grew up around the burgeoning New York rap scene and started rapping when he was 8-years-old. His group the Boyz formed in the late 80’s and went on to be the first group signed by Andre Harrell’s newly formed Uptown Records. Uptown would go on to be one of the most influential and successful black music labels. Kick starting not Heavy D’s funeral

MUSIC

only Heavy D’s career but also that of Sean Combs aka P Diddy and Mary J Blige.

The first Heavy D and the Boyz album was 1987’s Living Large. It sold well and tracks such as ‘Mr Big Stuff’ and ‘The Overweight Lovers in the House’ encapsulated Heavy D’s style. When the genre was spiralling towards its gangster rap hey-days of the 90’s, Heavy D was blending rap, r&b and hip hop and producing records people could just dance to. On the mic he was charming, witty and fun. 1989’s Big Tyme moved the group up to the next level and the album hit the billboard top 20 and scored three hit singles; including ‘We Got Our Own Thang’. In 1990 the group lost dancer Trouble T Roy following a fall whilst on tour. Their next album 1991’s ‘Peaceful Journey was dedicated to him. Pete Rock and CL Smooth also released the classic ‘They Reminisce Over You

Heavy D’s last tweet

(T.R.O.Y)’ .

Peaceful Journey spawned the groups biggest UK hit with the number two single ‘Now That We’ve Found Love’ It also featured ‘Sister Sister’ the song was a celebration of black women that provided a welcome change to the bitch and hoe laden rap records of the time. That same year Heavy D appeared on Michael Jackson’s ‘Dangerous’ album taking the guest rap slot on the hit single ‘Jam’. In the mid 90’s Heavy D became the first rapper to head a major music label, when he became the president of Uptown Records. He gave Sean Combs his start in music by hiring him as an intern. Heavy D began branching out into acting. He appeared in the Cosby show spin off ‘A Different World’ before taking a

recurring role in the Queen Latifah sitcom ‘Living Single’. Heavy D carried on juggling music and acting and appearing in numerous TV shows and taking parts in films including the Oscar winning ‘The Cider House Rules’ and the recently released Eddie Murphy vehicle ‘Tower Heist’. He was just getting back in the flow of music following the release in September of ‘Love Opus’ telling Tim Westwood just days before his death that he was practicing eight hours a day for six weeks. He also put in an appearance at the Michael Jackson memorial concert, teaming up with LaToya for a rendition of Run. His legacy was so great that President Obama sent a letter of condolence to his funeral. A regular on Twitter his last message to his followers was ‘Be Inspired!’ Wise words. He is survived by a daughter Xea. LIME MAGAZINE 2011

forward to present day and Clement Marfo & the Frontline have gone from underground rumblings to seismic moves in the commercial world. With their new release Overtime featuring Ghetts the inroads into the commercial world continues with vigour. So what have you been up to today? Clement: Today we just did a school tour we did a tour in Stoke Newington we had to wake up early though – it was hard in truth but it was cool. It was the first time we performed to a school audience and they got autographs and pictures so it was great. Stacy: It is our first time doing a proper school tour usually they cannot come to gigs so it was just good to let them hear our music. How would you 18 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

describe your sound as I am aware you cross many genres? Rich: It is best described as hip-hop, pop, rock. Clement: I do not say it like that I say hip-hop, rock, pop. Stacy: Well it is everything really. How did you get together? Clement: As a solo artist I was on the circuit doing live PA’s and I had a song called Purity and it had live instrumentation to it and I just felt that I needed a band. I felt at the time that there were lots of shows that I was doing and there were loads of big bands and I was the only with a mic and just a DJ. I hooked up with my friend Deon who plays drums and he introduced me to Stacy and Stacy introduced to me Rich. Kojo was doing his own stuff and I loved his sound and voice and I asked him if he wants to join the band

and he got involved. That was two three years ago and we have been on the live circuit performing with Rizzle Kicks, Plan B, Example and our fan base has really just started to grow. How do you keep the unity, obviously the music is the basis but how do you do it? Stacy: Funnily that is what we were saying earlier. We can argue about whatever but it would never get to the point where one of us would leave the band and we are like family. When you get on that stage anyway you forget everything and that is what we are all about. We all have the same idea about where we want to get to and so even if decisions are made that not everyone agrees to we do compromise with each other to try and reach our common goal really.

Let’s talk about your track with Ghetts then explains how that came about? Clement: We got into the studio and we have written over sixty songs and we were in the studio and the label were like we need one more hit which is a bit grittier because all the songs are big anthems like Champion and we came up with Overtime. We felt that we are the hardest workers out there and it was to put out a statement about ourselves. I have loved Ghetts for time and I have loved his work ethic so we hit him up and he was down with it. He came down to the studio and laid down his verse with ease you can just tell what a professional he is. -13 Dec Brian McKnight As an artist who needs no introduction, Brian McKnight has earned himself a spot in contemporary music history. He has released 13 albums to date, with several going 2 and 3x platinum, and he has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. In addition to being a singer, songwriter and producer, McKnight is also a multiinstrumentalist who plays nine instruments including piano, guitar, bass, drums, percussions, trombone, tuba, flugelhorn

(basically to “go wild” as opposed to crazy in Pigeon English). He delivered on all fronts; his conscious sound expressed political and social messages through an afrobeat reggae style. You did not need to know all his songs to know that the importance of his message and to enjoy the beauty of his sound - I particularly enjoyed “True Love”. The “Sexual” portion of his show included a silhouette sex show and, of course and trumpet. In an industry known for a constantly revolving door of artists, McKnight has easily established himself with an enviable record of chart consistency, has toured successfully for over a decade, and has collaborated with performers across every genre including Quincy Jones, Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Diddy, Christina Aguilera Rascal Flatts, Nelly, Vanessa Williams, Willie Nelson and Kenny G. the key message to use a condom. His most popular song of course is “African Queen” and special guest Yolanda Brown made the song even more enjoyable with her exceptional skills and talent. 2Face has a great list of floor fillers, which made the crowd go wild, and “Implication” was probably the highlight of the “craze” segment; the atmosphere was electric. My only criticism was that there was no encore instead the audience was invited to The After Party (not ideal for those of us with early starts).

Lime gig review: 2Face Idibia, indigo2 Words: Ronke Lawal | Lime rating: To see a Nigerian artist fill up a prominent venue like the Indigo2 made me smile. It was a real treat to have the opportunity to attend this concert and my expectations were high. The warm up acts were good time-fillers though our MC Eddie Kadi always kept the crowd buzzing; on top form as usual (it’s only a matter of time before he gets his own show). With a rather long prelude including video testimonials from his cohorts in the music business; including Wyclef, Sway, Ice Prince and D’Banj; as well as a group walking on stage wearing t-shirts spelling out world peace the atmosphere was filled with anticipation. 2Face arrived on stage promptly at 9pm and gave the crowd more than just a concert – he gave us a show.

2Face Idibia is a true showman; an entertainer and a philosopher through his music. The Nigerian music scene is blowing up at the moment and though many may come and go it’s clear that 2Face will always be one of the forefathers of the movement – make sure you get yourself his album for Christmas. producing musical stars like a production line people can forget about Canada but let’s not under estimate its influence. Remember, Drake, one of the biggest hip-hop stars to date, calls Canada home. Another child of Canada aiming to make a name is one Saidah Talibah who exudes raw “raunchy soul” like her life depends on it. Her “growling” and “legs spread” vibe is truly intoxicating and her first release Scream puts a sexier spin on the term “bedroom music” I think it would be more “whips and sweat music”.

Makes you wanna scream

Words: Semper Azeez-Harris

Firstly I wanted to ask you about your rather cool name. What does it mean? Yes it is my original name. Saidah (Sa-EE-dah) means happy and fortunate, Baba means born on Thursday and Talibah (Ta-LEEbah) means seeker after knowledge.

So your mother was obviously a huge influence but who else inspired you musically? My uncle (Andy Bey), aunt (Geraldine de Haas) – who were part of a group called Andy and the Bey Sisters – and then there my sister and my cousins. Lots of inspiration all of them are very close to home. But I was also inspired by Betty Davis, Chaka Khan, Living Colour, The Dead Weather, The Beatles, Nikka Costa, Nina Simone, and the list is constantly growing and evolving, just as I am.

Explain your musical birth. I was born into music. My mother was a singer/ songwriter herself, or as she would say, she was an entertainer. I spent many, many years watching her very attentively, she was wonderful! Whether I was in the audience or onstage with her, she created magic.

What was school life like for you in terms of your trajectory into music? Well, I went to a school for the arts (Claude Watson), and ironically, I didn’t do too much singing in school, I majored in dance and my minors were visual arts, playing the tuba, and photography. I did most of my singing outside of

school with my mother.

How would you describe your music I hear rock and loads of raw sexuality? I like to classify it as raunchy Soul. It’s like George Clinton, Jack White and Erykah Badu had a threesome and created a love child. There are elements of rock, funk, blues and soul and I’m a big flirt, so I get to push those boundaries in my music and show. What was the inspiration behind the current track Scream? Well, Donna Grant is my guitarist and co-writer. We were first inspired by the vibe of Betty Davis and Donna started singing ‘When you touch my body baby...’ – I just ran with it and it became a musical shout from the mountaintop to the one you love, telling them that

You can expect a lot of legs spread, head banging, growling, and loads of smiles. I love being onstage, it brings me so much joy everything they do makes you want to scream or cream (if you choose to be a little cheekier). I love cream, you must try Devon’s clotted cream it is amazing but anyway, what can we expect from you? Oooo well, you can expect a lot of legs spread, head banging, growling, and loads of smiles. I love being on-stage, it brings me so much joy. Anything I should have asked you that I did not? Hmmm, well, I don’t know, all depends on what you want to know and what I want you to know… You could have asked where I’m playing in London… and that answer would be: 5 December at Rich Mix (Bethnal Green), 6 December at The Windmill (Brixton) and 9 December at Cherry Jam (Westbourne Grove). Tinchy Stryder then followed this class act, pulling out all the stops to make the biggest impact on the night. The 25-year-old pint-sized rapper, appeared on a dazzling blue lit stage, where he paced around energetically to the sounds of his own music. Almost instantly, he was on fire. Things got even more heated up when the star was briefly joined by members of his grime collective - Ruff Sqwad causing a stir. But nothing quite compared to when Stryder performed solo. His chemistry with the audience was surreal. Both parties connected with songs such as ‘Spaceship’ and ‘In My System’, which Tinch related to past events that could not help but include his road to fame. ith new artists emerging on a consistent basis and shows opening practically every week, the sheer volume of all of this information can sometimes feel a tad overwhelming. Here are just a few of my personal favourite artists to look out for in the New Year and one or two interesting and potentially important shows to attend. Artists If you know anything about me, you know that one of my philosophies for art is that it by its very nature, represents the spirit of the times. At this moment in our history, no other artist captures this sentiment better for me than Geoffrey Raymond. An American painter, born in 1953, Raymond is best known for painting controversial Wall Street CEO’s, placing the paintings in the street and asking passers by to write their opinions of the subjects onto the portraits using marker pens. After the announcement of the $85 billion bail out for insurance giant AIG back in 2008, Raymond sat outside the company head quarters with a portrait of its then CEO Maurice “Hank” Greenberg. One person wrote, “Snarling rat bastard die! You suck. Love, Kim.” Utter genius, talk about capturing the spirit of the times. Really interesting and engaging work documenting our history.

Artist Rebecca FontaineWolfe, whom I interviewed earlier this year, is another one to watch. She is still early in her career having graduated in 2004. Her style has been described as a fine balance between the photo realistic and expressionist. She is concerned with the female form and specifically with modern ideas of image, beauty and identity through beautiful and arresting portraits. A

Maximillian Weidman is eccentric, witty, sarcastic and intelligent in his examination of pop culture, consumerism and the media. Again, the spirit of the times is evident in his work. He uses various media including sculpture, enamel on canvas and spray paint on canvas. One of my favourite pieces of his was a screen print entitled “Quantitative Easing.” It is made up of repeating one billion dollar bills (yes I did mean to say one BILLION dollar bills) with the following phrases written on them, “Love sucks, cash rules,” “Trust no one,” and my personal favourite, “The United States of Play.” Very Clever. Events If you love art as much as I do then you simply must go and see Leonardo Da Vinci at the National Gallery. Open until February 2012, the show is the largest exhibition of Da Vinci’s surviving paintings ever exhibited. The exhibit focuses on the period when Da Vinci worked as a court painter in Milan. Unless you have been hiding under a bushel these last few weeks, you will be aware that the London 2012 Olympic posters were unveiled early in November. A number of British artists

including Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread, Martin Creed, Chris Ofilli and Bridgit Riley designed the posters for the games. The opinions of the posters have been, shall we say varied, with some online commentators calling them “astoundingly bad,” and “incredibly lazy.” While I don’t personally like all of them, I think that was going a little far. Judge for yourself. The posters are currently on sale and will be shown in a special exhibition in the summer of 2012 as a part of a special advertising campaign for the games.

We spoke to Denise Blake and Flo Awolaja about their ongoing projects. Why did you decide to start such a company particularly for children who are fostered and adopted? Denise Brown/ Flo Awolaja: Being individuals who are both child centred, as we are mothers as well as Denise being a qualified social worker, working with children and family services. DB: Observations from my job as a Social worker, allowed me to have firsthand experience of children who are placed in care. During my social work experience, I have had white foster carers asking me, “was it ok to use cooking oil on a black child’s skin? After frequent similar questions such as this, we decided the book would be an excellent resource for all professionals, foster carers and adopters especially in relation to cross cultural placements. ‘The Black Child in Care: Health, Hair and Skin Care’ is a book you designed to cover some broad issues surrounding the care of African Caribbean/Mixed Heritage children. We also have several resources pages showing the books that can be bought, to highlight the positive images of African Caribbean/Mixed Heritage children and Hair. Additional pages also provide a fantastic resource of websites. Designing T-shirts are but one of your many passionate ideas promoting culture. Tell us about this creative venture... FA/DB: This creative venture started because we were both interested in fashion. The main reason for designing the t-shirts was initially to raise finances for the publishing and printing of the ‘Black Child in care: Health, Hair and Skin Care’ book. However our t-shirts now have a life of their own, and have become products

in their own right. Evolving from the t-shirt design are information cards that are normally sold with the t-shirts, giving a short biography of the Individual. Feedback from teachers has encouraged us to produce educational packs for schools. What is the greatest lesson 2011 has taught you? DB: For me the greatest lesson that 2011 has taught me is that ‘Fortune favours the brave’ it is the biggest one for me. Don’t let others tell you that you cannot do it’. Don’t just follow you dream, live it. In the last year we have come a long way, encountered many experiences and we are using these to continue to propel us on our fantastic journey.

Share a memory of a New Year’s Eve celebration. FA: For me the memory

of a New Year’s Eve celebration centres on my holiday to Nigeria. It was wonderful sitting outside the 100 year old house which my mother and grandmother was born in. The whole family was there, all of us chatting with neighbours in the village. As the light from the church opposite the house welcomed in the New Year, we listened to traditional Yoruba hymns. I was home from home, and feeling totally connected with my Nigerian heritage, a magical place to be.

DB: The memory that I would like to share of a New Year’s Eve happened several years ago, when my daughter was born, I remember my aunt holding my daughter in her arms, with gentle reggae music playing in the background, my mother and aunt sat talking about their childhood memories until it was 12am. A New Year celebration I will never forget.

You plan to do a series of road shows in 2012 linked to your book, what preparations are taking place in the making? DB/FA: In preparation for the 2012 road shows, we are seeking funding. We have specialised in fostering for over 20 years looking after children placed by a variety of London Boroughs and Brighton and Hove, West Sussex and neighbouring East Sussex County Councils. We also work closely with Surrey, Hampshire, Southampton. Our carers are attached to centres situated in Orpington and a number along the south coast ranging from Hampshire to Hastings. We have an experienced team of qualified social workers and staff who ensure that carers and children are well supported when placed carefully together. We recruit, train, match and place with carers where we feel they will be able to meet a child’s needs effectively with a caring and nurturing attitude. We strive to offer children and young people the best possible opportunities in life and go the extra mile to achieve this. Wdecide to write hy did you

about polygamy? The novel is based on a true story that I heard when I was 14-years-old. My brother’s girlfriend, a medical doctor, saw the episode unfold. She was there when a wealthy middle-aged man dragged his new, universityeducated wife to hospital to find a solution to her barrenness. I was intrigued by the drama of it all and thought it would make a great stage play. Fastforward 20 years. I needed a new project when I couldn’t find a publisher for my second unpublished novel. I wanted something fresh and exciting that I could get my teeth into. The story of Baba Segi and his wives was perfect. It was fairly easy to write because I had a lot of material from the stories my mother told me about the polygamous home she grew up in. Polygamy is all around you in Nigeria. I don’t know a lot of people of my generation whose grandfather’s weren’t polygamists. How have people in such families responded to the book? The general reaction to the novel has been wonderful. One lady (who is a daughter of a prominent Nigerian polygamist) did argue that becoming a cowife is ‘better than living as an unmarried whore’. Such statements, especially from women, demonstrate an attitude that I can only politely describe as defeatist. Many of the

invasive cultural practices, though probably imposed by patriarchal thinking, are enforced and supported by women. It embarrasses me when the ‘enlightened’ women of my generation make statements that limit and diminish women. Conversely, women often write to me to thank me for writing their stories. Some say they are amazed by the similarities between my portrayal of Baba Segi’s household and the homes that they grew up in. The novel continues to be well received in Nigeria and I am pleased about this. One of the strongest themes is about motherhood, you explore that in a variety of ways, why that particular focus? I have had a somewhat troubled relationship with my mother for most of my life. It’s amazing how much you learn about yourself during the drawnout process of writing a novel. I wanted to explore the complexity of mother/ daughter relationships and how the nature of these relationships can have devastating consequences for young girls

approaching womanhood. Several types of mothers are represented in the novel. In the Black Reading Group discussion in August, most people were sympathetic to Baba Segi, does that fit with the response you have had elsewhere? Yes, readers start off hating him and by the end of the novel, they find themselves feeling sorry for him. I adore Baba Segi because he is such a devoted father to the children in his household. He’s a bit of a dinosaur but that’s because he knows no better. What book do you wish you had written and

Polygamy is all around you in Nigeria. I don’t know a lot of people of my generation whose grandfather’s weren’t polygamists. why? Sula by Toni Morrison. It is my favourite book. It explores human imperfection with sensitivity. I have always been drawn to tragic heroes. I also admire writing that captures human frailty, our flaws, our appetite for excess. I pay tribute to Sula in The Secret Wives of Baba Segi’s Wives. What are you working on now? Something I really like. There’s a lot going on in Nigeria at the moment. The Abuja I live in used to be a safe haven, but is now making the headlines for all the wrong reasonsbomb blast and religious extremism. Slowly, life as we know it in Nigeria is disappearing. I find it tragic that people can just plod on, settling into a permanent feeling of dread. Info: The full version of this interview is at Black Book News blog | www.triciablackbooknews.com

Given the British love of all things about the Second World War, it is surprising that this book was not to the fore more in the recent heated analysis of the Man Booker shortlist. As an avid follower literature prizes, it seems that the annual cliché of discussing what has not made the list, has overtaken exploration of the truly original work that did. Born in Calgary, Canada of Ghanaian parents, Esi’s novel is intricate. It tells of a multi-racial jazz band caught up in Paris as the Nazi’s arrive. The hero, Hiero Falk, is mixed race, African-German. He’s an effortlessly talented musician, betrayed by his black American friend, Sid, a less talented

Life between the wars in Europe, particularly in Germany, for black people, is a barely explored era. Esi’s research and imagination brings the period to life in great detail and precise tension. his book year has been the year of the Kindle; so many people are now reading books through this new medium. It’s been fascinating to see readers around London engrossed in their misty grey screens. I am sure that Kindles will be under thousands of Christmas trees this year. So far, I have not succumbed, mostly because I genuinely believe that books are such beautiful things, I am not ready to give up that tactile sensuality. A Kindle makes all books feel the same; going back to old books always bring back such wonderful memories. I cannot imagine that you get the same experience with a Kindle. Kindles are said to give access to millions of books, but I do wonder if the books that I really want would be there. In contrast to the anonymity of Kindle books, I am overjoyed to see how many more publishers are giving careful thought to how books look, and are designing whole collections to be evermore gorgeous. I hope that will continue. Looking ahead to the 2012, it seems that every moment there are literary prizes or book awards of some sort. baking cakes for her colleagues whilst working as marketing and communications executive at BBC Radio 1Xtra. Inspired by finding recipes; three years on Jules says once she got the bug she couldn’t stop and guarantees that “once you taste a cake from The Fancy Baker you will understand why one is never enough!” Tell us about how you where inspired to bake by eating a red velvet cupcake? One of my best friends gave me a bite of a Red Velvet cupcake, which she bought, from a wellknown bakery in South Kensington. Living in South London I knew I was never going to get down there to buy some more, so I decided to find a recipe and make some myself. How did you come up with the name The Fancy baker? Some of the names we came up with were truly awful [laughs] my all time favourite on the bad names list was ‘You Get Me Dough.’ My friends really campaigned for that one, apparently it was meant to give me street cred! Thankfully my sister Dee who doubles up as my sous chef came up with the

name ‘The Fancy Baker’. It was based on an album called Fancy Dancer by one of my favourite jazz artists, Bobbi Humphrey. It was a perfect fit. You where the resident baker for London club night Any Given Sunday, Tell us more... Those guys really pushed me. At first they wanted cupcakes, which is all that The Fancy Baker was putting out at the time. Then they asked for some big layer cakes. Although I had baked my fair share of cakes in the past, I didn’t really know how to ice a big cake, but I always think it’s important to have a ‘can do’ attitude – even if you can’t do when you’re asked, there’s always YouTube! So I quickly taught myself how to ice a cake, then how to write messages on the cakes – which trust me, isn’t easy! Luckily the guys loved the cakes and continued to

How would you describe your company, and what makes The Fancy Baker different to any other? I think what makes the fancy baker different is that every cake is made with love. It’s about substance over style. I love researching other cake bakers and companies and tasting different cupcakes. I do find that there are cakes that look incredible and you bite into them and there is disappointment. My thing is just about making people happy, food is about is a real sensual pleasure; we try to express that inside the cake. Tell us about some of your biggest client orders? One minute I was making cakes ordered by my sister’s colleagues, and my old friends at the ‘Beeb’, the next thing I’m making cakes for Durex’s 80th birthday party at Sketch, or more recently churning out 500+ cupcakes for the Screen Nation Awards at the O2! What is the greatest lesson that 2011 has taught you? I guess that anything can be achieved with faith, for me. Share a memory of

Lime restaurant review: Assagetti Words: Semper AzeezHarris | Lime rating: Situated in the heart of central London on the Haymarket, Assagetti is an Italian restaurant that seeks to bring traditional flavoursome Italian cuisine in a conversational and relaxing atmosphere. To top off the evening we had chocolate and raspberry trifle which was thick and creamy, and the sweet custard in the middle made it delightfully tasty. Overall it was a great experience and the authentic African scene along with funky rhythms in the background made the evening allows you to sample the various dishes. An assortment of breads from focaccia to hazelnut bread sets things off nicely. For assagetti we went through a meatball based meal with a rich deep tomato sauce, to some brilliantly presented shrimps with heads served in a spicy garlic brandy sauce (Gamberi alla Griglia), to a beef Carpaccio served with shavings of parmesan cheese and olive oil. We could have opted then for larger portions of the small meals we had tasted but in truth we had reached belly capacity. Lime restaurant review: Shaka Zulu Words: Vernia Mengot | Lime rating: Located in the everup rising town that is Camden, Shaka Zulu boasts amazing decor and flaunts some traditional South African cuisine. On arrival my guest and I were greeted by the friendly hostess, dressed in a modern take on African fashion with a printed dress, she ushered us to our table on the ground floor. We were seated at a booth by the bar where we had a full view of the restaurant at what seemed like its busiest hour. After a high recommendation of the Kloovenburg Merlot 2007 to drink we opted for the only hot starter on the menu; Braised Lamb Shank Samosa and the Rooibos Tea Smoke Salmon which was served with pickled cucumber, horseradish, pea shoots and soda bread. For the main course I ordered the spit roast of the day; lamb, which had been cooking for five hours accompanied by piri piri, fries and chakalaka, it was very juicy but the fries where a little sharp and too

Warner plays my husband and I play a Therapist who is out in the workplace whilst he works from home. Playing that role did it make you want to become a mum even more? I don’t know if it made me want to become one but I would love to have a family and I have always wanted to be a mother so hopefully that will happen one day. I don’t have much control over that, you kind of need another person (laughs). What is it like working with Malcolm? It is fantastic; we didn’t know each other before. I came into the project first as a producer, he is a nice person and we have great chemistry. We share a similar work ethic of how we want the show to be. We are both producers; so to work together as much as we do and still love each other is great.

Girlfriends ran for eight seasons, (176 episodes) which was a mixture of comedy and drama, do you think the show executed that well? I do I thought our writing was wonderful; it was unique and real. It was great on the part of our executive producer to take a comedy and allow it to have heavy moments. I enjoyed it and I think the audience did too. You hosted ‘Black Girls Rock’ this year. Were you excited about that? Yes, one of the things I love about that awards show is the fact it honours not just celebrities but people who are doing things to inspire and give back. It gives time to the young generation who are doing inspiring things. There’s great entertainment with Erykah Badu and Mary J Blige, Angela Davis gets an award and with my clothing changes it’s worth tuning in just for that.

You come from a showbiz family, what was it like growing up? Very normal that was my life. We are a private family who lead a public life. Do you get to spend a lot of time with each other? Yes we do, I talk to my mum way too often. When did you know you had the acting bug? I was bitten by the entertaining bug from a young age and I have always enjoyed making people laugh. Did your mum, the legendary Diana Ross, encourage you to go into the performing arts? She encouraged me to follow my heart and my joy to wherever it might lead and make me happy. Do you have her music on your IPod/MP3? I do, I downloaded a box

set of the full collection, all the best stuff with all the hits. Also the Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye album that’s a great one, you should check it out. What is your next big project? Working on ‘Reed Between the Lines’ we’re still getting people on board. People in this day and age forget that it takes a while to grow a show and an audience. Shows like ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Friends’, didn’t start out where they ended. So I ask the audience to give us a chance and stick with us. They are calling it the new ‘Cosby Show’ do you see it like that? I don’t mind it, that’s a good thing; it’s not like it’s terrible and horrible come on it’s great. But we are not trying to emulate the ‘Cosby Show’, we’re trying to make a good family show, and it’s inevitable that there will be similarities and comparisons.

you never know. I’m 39 but we’ll see. What music are you into now? I love Adele; I have every CD, and I like the new Kanye West album and Beyoncé and Rihanna. I like pop music. Your style is both elegant and regal; do you have a stylist or just natural flair? I love clothes; I came out of the womb ready to shop. Clothes have always been a way of

expression for me. I used to play in my closet fantasising about how my life would be. I don’t have a stylist. It’s like art to me, style is the way you do, clothes and fashion is what you wear. I love the 50’s and the early 80’s - I lie somewhere in between. So how are you finding London? I’m having a ball, but when I go back to the US I’m going back to heavy snow.

What is the greatest lesson that 2011 has taught you? This has been a year of not over-thinking and working towards joy and fun as opposed to appropriate and right.

Can you share a memory of New Year’s Eve? My favourite was in Switzerland with my family and my stepsiblings did fireworks. Info: Reed Between The Lines is on BET (Sky Channel 191 and Freesat 140) | www.bet. com | www. twitter.com/ traceeellisross

The Artist Lime rating: Release date: 20th December Starring: Bérénice Bejo, James Cromwell, Jean Dujardin and John Goodman A silent film, set in a bygone age. That might not be the best pitch in the world for a modern movie, but trust us ‘The Artist’ is a simply stunning piece of filmmaking that will put your faith back in the

medium of cinema. The film that this reminds us of the most, or at least the one that can consistently invoke such primal emotions, is ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. It’s not just because they are both in black and white, we’ve seen that attempted before in a cynical manner, but rather because it can put you in a fuzzy state of mind without ever trying too hard. It’s the roaring 20’s, and screen star George Valentin

(Dujardin) is about to get the shock of his life with the advent of the ‘talkies’. Initially dismissive, George watches on as Peppy (Bejo) takes centre-stage, embracing the new format and becoming a star in her own right. The pair look to help one another, but will it be too late for George? If you’re looking for something to put smile on your face during those inevitable post-New Year blues, then this is the film for you.

Shame Lime rating: Release date: 13th December Starring: Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan The talk of the London Film Festival (along with ‘The Artist’), Steve McQueen’s follow up to ‘Hunger’ is a devastating and unflinching look at addiction. The fact that the addiction in question is sex 38 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

Brendon (Michael Fassbender) is a smart, good-looking 30 something living and working in New York. Although he has a compulsion that sees him picking up random women and surfing the Internet looking for sexual kicks, his life is at least structured in its own way. However, lurking in the distance is Brandon’s sister Kitty (Carey Mulligan), who is desperate for a place to stay. Once she moves in, Brandon’s life spirals rapidly out of control, and his addiction begins to put him in dangerous situations, often beyond his control.

The obsessive nature of Fassbenders character is brilliantly brought to the screen by the directing/ acting duo that were behind Hunger. The actor has had a stellar year, and will also be seen in ‘A Dangerous Method’ and ‘Haywire’ in the next few months. He’s surely in the running for the big awards for ‘Shame’, as we hope McQueen is too. The film looks stunning, and captures New York in such a way that it looks unique but also displaying elements that could apply to any major metropolis.

It is explicit, but not to the extent some of the hysteria would have you believe. The hype around the quality though is justified.

Puss in Boots (3D) Lime rating: Release date: 9th December Starring: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek After a number of ‘Shrek’ films (we’ve honestly lost count at this stage), one of the best things about the last few installments is back in his own film. Lothario Puss in Boots is here to save the day, in 3D and with an assortment of cat-based puns. A prequel, telling the story of cat-burglar Puss before he met Shrek and Donkey. As ever, there is something instantly adorable about a cat-shaped ball of fur, even in 3D computer graphic form. They go full tilt with this film with an extended sequence of Puss as a kitten being left at an orphanage. Never have I heard a cinema full of people uniformly murmur “Awwww”. The story is merely functional however, proving why Dreamworks still can’t match the consistency of rival Pixar. Too many in-jokes and popculture references without enough time on the script itself.

Jackson will be on hand to lead a team of superheroes against an evil menace. Not part of that team, but still a member of the Marvel universe is ‘Spiderman’ who will be getting a 3D reboot courtesy of Andrew Garfield.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ will be the biggest film of the year. The third film in the Nolan Batman trilogy will be our last chance to catch the current Bruce Wayne as both star and director are set to bow out to allow for a Warner Bros reboot. Little is known about the plot itself, but we think Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway will only add to the clamour to see the movie.

‘Men in Black 3’ will be one of the early blockbusters in the summer, closely followed by ‘Prometheus’. Both have something to do with aliens... but that’s about all we know at this stage.

Mission Impossible 4

You’ll still be able to catch the likes of ‘Mission Impossible 4’, ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’ and ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ in cinemas in January, but for something original be sure to check out our recommendation ‘Shame’.

Fans of 3D will not only get new films by the bucketload again, but also a couple of classics being remastered in the format. ‘Star Wars: Phantom Menace’ and ‘Titanic’ are set to return... we might be busy doing something else on those days though.

With ‘Harry Potter’ now done with, we can expect to see the stars trying their best to land other roles. Daniel Radcliffe will be seen in the spooky ‘The Woman in Black’ although there are plenty of franchises looking to fill the void. The one most likely at this stage is ‘The Hunger Games’, a bestselling series which you’ll find everyone reading on the tube at the moment.

A film we can’t wait for, but will have to, is ‘The Muppets’! The trailers have been superb so far and who on earth will have a problem with watching Kermit and the gang? Plus there is the lovely Amy Adams to contend with.

The hugely popular ‘Streetdance’ has spawned a sequel, and that will be hitting the screens at the end of March. And on a musical tip (kinda), Rihanna will make a screen debut in ‘Battleship’... yep the film based on the strategy board game.

Denzel Washington returns in February with ‘Safe House’, an intriguing sounding thriller which will see him teaming up with Ryan Reynolds.

If any film can compete with ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in terms of hype, then it will be the Marvel team-up movie ‘The Avengers’. Samuel L

Other films to keep an eye out for are ‘Jack the Giant Killer’, the two ‘Snow White’ films, ‘Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter’, ‘Total Recall’ and out own guilty pleasure... ‘Step Up 4’. Seriously. The recently announced ‘SkyFall’ will see James Bond back on the big screen, with an interesting sounding role for Naomie Harris. Andi Osho

COMEDY

Words: Gillian Fisher

Oultimate rib ticklers, ne of the capital’s

Andi Osho has burst onto the comedy circuit in a flurry of glamorous outfits and high heels in the last few years. When she’s not being loud and proud in her stand up gigs she’s grinning mischievously from our screens on Stand Up For the Week on Channel 4 or quipping over the airwaves on BBC Radio 4 Extra’s Comedy Club Interviews. Her tongue in cheek humour that varies from lewd observations to acerbic irony is delivered with incredible presence and energy. Speaking to the woman herself as she makes her way to Manchester on the train I find Andi friendly, deeply astute and incredibly brave, as she describes giving up the nine to five to follow her dream of doing stand up I can’t but feel this is one pretty inspirational funny woman. You’re on tour at the moment. How is that going? Really well, thanks. I’m only doing a few gigs, Edinburgh, Reading, the usual places, but it’s all going really well, have had some great crowds. When did you realise you had the ability to make people laugh? Well I think most people make people laugh, everyone’s got it in them to be funny. I think if you’ve never made anyone laugh that would be a bit strange. I think what

42 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

makes people think stand up is brave is because you’re taking that spirit and energy and making it translate onto the stage. It’s mainly about that challenge of being able to get up there and do it in front of a live audience, having the confidence to go for it.

What’s the greatest lesson that 2011 has taught you? I think probably the biggest thing, because I’ve been doing a show about dating I’ve learnt a lot from reading about relationships and the psychology of them. So I’ve learnt a lot about how men think, it’s been a bit of an eye opener. The different way that men’s brains work when you compare that to women’s. It’s been really interesting! I’ve also discovered a bit of a love for twittering, just been learning how you can use it. You can have a lot of fun on twitter, like when a show’s going out, tweeting about it as you’re watching it and getting other people’s feedback and funny comments, so I’ve really enjoyed doing that. You have to be careful of course, some people take the whole thing way too seriously, it’s like ‘Calm down, darling!’ but so long as you’re not broadcasting your whole life and having online feuds it can be really fun.

Could you share a New Years Eve experience with me? One New Years Eve I was playing this tiny gig, there were about four people in the audience and then my family came to see me in my ‘big show’ so that pretty much doubled the audience! I asked people if they had any New Year’s resolutions and this one girl shouted out, ‘Not to make New Years plans at 3 O’clock!’ But I did my best! By the time it got to midnight I was just with the family and we were all watching Friday night live, the New Year just sort of happened; we didn’t even get to do the whole Auld Lang Syne thing. What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? Honestly, just get out there

and do it. Everyone’s journey is different, and even if I were to tell you everything I’ve learnt, it’s completely different when it’s you up there doing it. For me, it was -this is my passion, this is my dream and I did it, not for any other reason. People are always saying you should have a regular salary, you should have a house and a regular job to the point where it just becomes a habit. I think people should follow their dream, whether that’s stand up or acting, or even if people have dreams of working in accountancy. Just go for it, follow your dream. hugely influential DJs has been at the centre of the music scene since the 90’s and continues to be a force of musical knowledge. So as we approach 2012 Manny is in no mood for slowing down and rather like the pocket sized dynamo with the same first name, Manny is out to drop some heavy combinations of dj’ing, hosting and TV work to name but a few. How did you get into music? I got into music from my family. My dad was always into music and used to play music in the house. Both my parents are Ghanaian so there was a good mix of genres, highlife, Motown, jazz, calypso, pop, reggae, everything really, so it opened my eyes from a young age. Plus in our family, there were always parties for christenings, weddings, birthdays, any excuse to have a dance and a laugh.

Manny Norté:

You DJ at so many places so what has been the highlight for you this year? A highlight for me this year was in Egypt. Never played there before and it was a great experience, also doing Glastonbury for the first time too. What are your opinions on the African scene at the moment? The hip life/Afrobeats scene has grown so much in the last couple of years and with artists getting bigger like D’Banj getting signed to Kanye West’s “Good Music” label, all this helps the scene grow bigger. Why is it now do you think that the African music scene is making an impact commercially? People are turning to the Africa scene now because it’s fresh and exciting. Also there are so many celebs, artists and athletes with African backgrounds who live in the UK, it helps the awareness of where a lot of the talent is coming from.

Also business wise, there are so many opportunities all over Africa, more and more business men are investing in the continent which helps everything. You have been in the business for such a long time what keeps the fires burning aside from the music of course? The fact that my phone still rings for bookings, being asked to play at high profile celebrity parties, the way the scene is still growing for urban music and on top of all, because I still love it. From a UK perspective who is ready to unleash the dogs of war?! Labrinth I feel is going to shake up the whole place for 2012, so he is my first choice. Second I would say Cleo Sol, a talented UK vocalist who has a lot of people talking about her. On the rapping side I love what Lady Leshurr is doing it and she is representing Birmingham to the fullest an amazing talent! I was dj’ing for the first UK BET

hip hop Cyphers and she was one of the emcees, and to see her spit even had all the guys going crazy.

Lastly what are your 2012 plans? In 2012 I will be bringing out more music featuring more big artists that I like. I am working on some TV ideas and projects and I have a couple business ventures I am trying to get off the ground – watch this space. The return of the Jump Off – I will be the DJ for this, every 2 weeks, starting from January. This event has been a huge platform for artists such as Professor Green, Diversity, Flawless, Labrinth, Mr Hudson and Sway to name but a few. More parties, more dj’ing more Manny Norté… Info: www.mannynorte. com | www.twitter.com/ mannynorte LIME MAGAZINE 2011

Blaze it up

In this exclusive interview Lime Magazine caught up with Nathan Lindsay otherwise known as DJ Houdini who tells us all about Blaze it Up entertainment.

Steen, DJ Houdini

tarting out as a young

donned his name from a friend, and teamed up with DJ Cee-Six to create a sound, playing r&b and hip hop at top London venues. Houdini talks to us about moving on to bigger and brighter things, youth workshops and making their name heard in the rest of the UK. When did you start out as a DJ? Well I started DJ’ing from when I was about 15/16. My brother’s a DJ, so I suppose since he started I’ve always been interested in it. I started going to his events and stood alongside him and I used to help bring the equipment and just learnt basically. Who taught you how to mix? The person that taught me how to mix was a guy called Collin at a youth club I used to go to and he taught me how to mix everything. So it started from there. How did you decide on your DJ name? I had another name first; which was DJ Shades that came about because of my purple tinted sunglasses. Later my friend gave me the DJ name Houdini. Houdini stuck with me from there. Has playing music always been your sole career? I do youth work; I do music workshops, in Putney for 10-18 year olds. There are a lot of young people that are aspiring to be DJ’s, but they don’t have people to talk to for advice on how to go about it and do it. You don’t have anyone guiding you to

we want to make our name heard a bit more and branch out

CeeSix and DJ Houdini are… Blaze It Up entertainment

tell you the dos and don’ts. What kind of music do you prefer to play and what would you say is your favourite genre of music? I’ve always been interested in r&b and when I first stared it was ragga not bashment; they were the main types of music I started from. My favourite genre is probably r&b, I can play r&b all day long. I’ve always been a fan of Mary J Blidge, Donnel Jones and R Kelly. For the reggae probably, Sanchez. What does Blaze it up entertainment do? We do events; we do raves, showcasing new talent. We mostly play at Clubs and bars, and family events like weddings and christenings. We try and make everything individual to the person that we are playing it for. Blaze it Up entertainment do various things. There are two of us DJ Cee-Six and myself. I also do a radio station called On Top FM based in south London, been doing that for three years. I do two shows on Tuesday between 10-12pm called

‘Swag Overloaded’ which is strictly r&b, hip hop and slow jams. We showcase UK talent with interviews. The Sunday show which is called ‘Take me back Sundays’ is rare grooves and old soul; tunes that you don’t hear anymore. There were originally three people that where in my sound. We were called ‘THD’ stands for The Horny Devil’s; it was me and three of my close friends. The sound kind of fizzled out. What can we look forward to seeing from you in the New Year? We want to try and move out of London because we’ve done a lot in London. So we want to make our name heard a bit more and branch out. We have a new website that will be launched before the New Year. What is the greatest lesson that 2011 has taught you? I suppose never

underestimate anyone or your abilities. I think that because we have played out in certain events and we’ve exceeded ourselves. We may have only been on for a warm up but we have played better than expected.

Share a memory of a New Year’s Eve celebration. One when I played at a five room house party, which was really good. And also when I played at two Uni’s down in Oxford. There were 1000-2000 people there and it was a good atmosphere and good vibe.
