Household Support Grants for working families available now!
Wyre Council is able to offer support to those in need who have not qualified for previous Household Support Grants, such as those in employment who have dependent children, who earn too much to claim social benefits yet still struggle with the daily cost of living.
To be eligible to apply for help from the scheme, applicants must live in the Wyre area, be liable to pay council tax, have dependent children and not be in receipt of social benefits other than child benefit, and therefore haven’t received any of the cost of living payments made by the Department for Work and Pensions.
Full criteria for applying
You live in Wyre and are a council tax payer
You are a couple or single adult with dependent children in respect of whom you receive child benefit
You do not claim any other social benefits (for example Universal Credit, Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, Tax credits)
You are responsible for the payment of the household energy bills in respect of your home
You have less than £16,000 in savings
Your total annual gross household income is below £40,000 for a single adult and £52,000 for a couple
Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and awards are at the discretion of the council. Evidence will need to be uploaded as part of the application process, for example; bank statements and wage slips and Wyre Council has the right to refuse an application even if an applicant meets all of the criteria.

NEW BLUE PLAQUES FOR HISTORIC FLEETWOOD BUILDINGS
Fleetwood Civic Society are planning to erect several Blue Heritage Plaques on notable Fleetwood buildings and they want your help!
“After a successful bid for funding, we have the opportunity to create a trail of blue plaques around the town centre”, said Margaret Daniels, Civic Society Chair. “We’d love as many local residents as possible to help choose the sites for the plaques and to nominate those sites which they think should be commemorated in this way.”
Potential sites should have a significant place in Fleetwood’s history and the Society will be undertaking rigorous historical research in order to create a long list of nominations. This will then
go to a community panel who will select the final proposed site list.
“The team have already begun seeking nominations”, said William Hargreaves, local historian, and chair of the Fleetwood Blue Plaques Project. “We plan to involve Fleetwood Residents of all ages especially children and young people and are planning to meet with people at events throughout this summer and autumn.”
The project aims to encourage a greater sense of appreciation and understanding of Fleetwood’s heritage and its historic environment. It is also expected to engender a greater pride of place and help improve mental wellbeing of residents.
The project has been made possible by a grant of £13,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and has been supported by Wyre Council. Local residents can nominate their favourite sites and even favourite past Fleetwood personalities who deserve to be commemorated on a simple form which Civic Society members are taking around Fleetwood on a regular basis. Nominations can also be made online via a special form at https://forms.gle/ xo5tuKPGoUj7XUhk6
The project is expected to be completed by late 2024 and will be launched then, alongside the special Fleetwood Blue Plaques Trail which will be made available to visitors for many years.
WYRE COUNCIL OFFERS A
HELPING HAND FOR FAMILIES THIS SUMMER HOLIDAYS
Wyre Council has opened bookings for an exciting range of holiday clubs taking place this summer for children on benefits related free school meals.
The Holiday Activity and Food Clubs are funded by the Department for Education and are designed to enhance children’s holiday experiences whilst promoting physical activity and healthy nutrition.
There are lots of different sessions taking place across Wyre for both primary and secondary school aged children. Activities include coding and video game design, football, boxing, dance, cooking, arts and crafts and more.
Eligible over 14s can also access a number of the Fylde Coast YMCA gyms for free throughout the holidays. Anyone booking on a session will also receive a free healthy lunch.
Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council comments, “We recognise the importance of providing children with enriching experiences beyond the classroom and so we’ve partnered with local activity providers to offer opportunities for young people to have fun, meet friends and learn new skills.
“We want to provide support for those families who may struggle to bridge the gap that the school holidays create. This summer’s clubs offer a wider range of activities than ever before and promote social interaction, as well as physical and mental wellbeing. Come and enjoy fun activities, healthy meals and more!”
Places need to be reserved, with a code provided by your child’s school - see what's on and book spaces at www.wyre. gov.uk/holidayclub

Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column
He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and all-round horticultural inspiration.
is month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses the maintenance of pathways and walkways in our gardens.
It’s only right we spend so long obsessing over the green spaces in our garden, and at the heart of that is plants, flowers and, of course, a gorgeous, lush, green lawn.
Yet there is many a beautiful baize spoiled by the constant plodding of human feet, and when the colder, rainier months come around, that gentle path leading to the shed can rapidly come to resemble a muddy mess.
at’s why providing a practical route for people to be able move through a garden is so important. Paths and walkways obviously serve a practical function in providing safe and easy access to the decorated corners of your garden,
whilst also o ering a visual and aesthetic element, guiding the eye, o ering a contrast between natural and manmade materials, whilst creating, as well, an invitation to explore.
Maintaining a pathway, or perhaps even a larger paved area, almost always means turning to concrete. It is hard-wearing, inexpensive and versatile, while in terms of durability you’ll struggle to find anything be er. Yet for those who want a look that’s more natural or rustic, use something like gravel, wood or natural stone. ese materials can create a so er, more organic look that blends in well with the surrounding landscape.
Either way, focus on colour and texture. Look at the other shades in your garden and try to match tones; also mimic shapes in flowers and plants by selecting concrete elements that are styled and intricately designed, focusing on curves, lines and detail.
In terms of laying a path, plan every stone before you start, aiming for flow, perspective and a pa ern that guides the eye. Ensure the ground you are laying the path on is well drained, and while the temptation is to lay each slab level, you may want to factor in a slight tilt so that rainwater
runs o it rather than pooling on top.
Finally, when laid, gravel or mulch around the sides of the path will hold it in place and allow it to so en as it naturalises with your garden.
As the years go by, regular cleaning and repairs will keep your path in optimum condition. Jet washing is a great way of bringing it back to life.
Ultimately, while concrete o en carries with it an unsteady reputation as far as our gardens are concerned, we’d be stuck without it!
